Sooooooooo considering how much stuff has been done about it (and considering the friends who enabled me into expanding what was originally just a dumb self-indulgent shitpost), and considering the fact that I said I would be posting about blue alien frogs only to then not post anything, I guess it is time for this AU to breach containment.

I am on the fence regarding whether or not this AU constitutes spoilers for the game Outer Wilds or not. This AU is sort of a quantumly official/unofficial sequel to my longfic Fate Knows No One, but also is sufficiently disconnected from it that spoilers for the fic itself are going to be limited for at least a very long while. Maybe even long enough that I will be able to convince my brain to finish the fic in question before the spoilers show up in the AU.

That being said: Modern AU? What's better about Outer Wilds than to take these wonderful Hearthians, living peacefully on their tiny cozy planet full of geysers, rocket-induced explosions, and pine trees, and throw them into the wonderful world of capitalism? /s

Anyway, the comic probably was extremely confusing for anyone who did not already know about this AU through the Campfire Discord server, but thankfully I can provide you with a slightly better explanation of what's going on right here. Just know that, um, I heavily recommend you already have caught up on the regular Outer Wilds lore, because it will spoil an important part about what happens in the ending of the game. It will also spoil some part of FKNO (the fic), but if you have played Outer Wilds, it's a part of the fic you already knew would happen anyway.

A solitary tear rolled down Alec's cheek, all the while shock was written plainly upon Magnus' face. Where before he was thinking that he would be able to walk out of the stadium without wasting a second thought on Alec, he suddenly found himself under his spell again.

A man stood lonely and forlorn on its top. He seemed to be watching the action without showing any emotion. As if he were a simple observer, in no way involved in the war that was raging in Edom. Clary, however, had recognized him. And how could she not?

Hmmm.... so this bit is from a very extremely, actually very smutty Modern AU I've been writing on and off since I got out of hospital, but I think I've finally found a bit that's not explicit....

‘What about you? You don’t have brothers or sisters?’ Merrill swallowed. ‘No. I – actually I was raised by Marethari Talas. You might have heard of her, if you know anything about Dalish movies.’ ‘Never watched any, but I’ve heard of her. Like I’d heard of you.’ ‘Ye-es.’ Merrill bit her lip. ‘My parents passed away when I was a young child.’ ‘Oh,’ Carver said, looking serious. ‘I’m sorry.’ ‘No – it’s fine,’ Merrill said, awkwardly. Now it was her turn to change the subject away from family, or try to. ‘Anyway, it’s how I became her protegée. She didn’t just teach me how to act – she also taught me how to wield my magic. I came into it at the age of four.’

I never knew your parents well. Difficult people to get to know, my father would say. I suppose the same could be said of you, my dear… but you know I always relished a challenge. The first time you gave one of those little shites a whack with its tail and sent 'em scrambling! Now, that made me proud.

One day, Pekoyama is struck hard.

She is watching the Young Master speak, fists firm at his side. It is one of those times where his doubts about himself are shed, leaving Kuzuryuu Fuyuhiko exposed. The Clan's pin glints from his jacket. He outshines it.

The sun stretches through the leaves and he is gold. Golden hair, golden eyes, golden glow. Her body mutinies in a way she cannot rationalise. There is warmth in her chest, but she does not think it is fever. It has the weightlessness of fever nonetheless.

Dazed, she wonders if there is a word for this.

Then the sun is muffled behind a cloud. She stands statue-still, as if nothing happened at all.

8. A semi-corporeal embodiment of uncertainty sends a medic to check on her friend with truth serum powers after she slightly stabs him in the neck to make him stop talking

9. A claustrophobia vampire distracts her friend from his broken heart by teaching him how to build a blanket fort; this actually works pretty well

10. The best diplomat in a formalized found family who all belong to the same eldritch horror recruits a new member by having the sense to follow his script and accept the damn tea

11. A marine biologist requests a magical object to block unintentional telepathy after an orca tries to give her romantic advice

12. A collections librarian dies a horrible death in an abandoned gold mine and still shows up for work the next day; her colleagues respond by making every effort to become a vampire-friendly workplace
