“you go blank inside” babygirl. you are dissociating
the abuse that hal suffered at martin jordan’s hands (and words) are. pretty indispensable to understanding hal’s time as a GL leading up to becoming parallax... hal became part of the corps pre-conditioned and primed for easy indoctrination. despite recognizing martin’s behaviour as abusive, and hoping to never become like him, compliance at one’s own expense was all hal knew. it was what felt safe, what felt familiar, and made up that last tendril of sanity—the universe couldn’t be that cruel, and a parent wouldn’t be so hateful for no reason. there must be something hal can fix—can compromise—to be accepted. if only hal could have given martin what he wanted, whatever that may have been. if, if, if.
fealty won’t earn you happiness—only survival.
when that illusion finally crumbles—when the realization that decades of loyalty to the corps and to the long-deceased father has reaped zero reward—so does the remainder of hal’s belief system.
captions below:
1. dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
Willpower. Absolute concentration. Split second timing. Where does that come from?
Instead it’s all feed in more trim and if you’re still nose-down, put your feet in the stirrups and blow the canopy before you red out. You do what you do. You go blank inside.
2. back issue #80, on Green Lantern
Fearless people tend to be cocksure of their actions and tend not to question anything, including authority. I recall a number of John Broome[-written] stories where Hal was totally (and happily) subservient to the Guardians of the Universe.
3. zero hour: crisis in time (1994) #0
I used to be the errand boy for the Guardians of the Universe. It was a thankless job. I knew that. I had never asked for anything.
The one time I did, I was denied. It dawned on my just how unfair the universe really was…
4. green lantern (1990) #63
Your rules. Your rules kept me from any happiness. I served the corps more faithfully than anyone, and my loyalty got me nothing.
5. dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
Like what you learn at the end of someone’s arm. You learn to go blank.
Like maybe things with him would change if could just give him what he wants. If you would just take it like a man. But nothing ever did change. He just kept calling you a loser. And if he ever had a warmer opinion, you never heard about it. You took that like a man, too.
6. back issue #80, on Green Lantern
I always believe it is very hard for people to actually change their personalities. So the best Hal could do was reach a happy medium, intellectually realizing he should be feeling differently about a situation, but emotionally having trouble doing so.
7. dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
I don’t think I can do this anymore. “Fearless.” It’s all a crock.
8. green lantern (1990) #50
9. dc comics presents: green lantern (2004)
You go blank inside.
Maybe sometimes that’s all that stands between this thing on my finger and the hot green end of everything.

i get why everyone wants to moralize the gl corps into space explorers but realistically it’s still just going to be the same level of “progressiveness” as before. like park rangers: the green lantern edition is still going the have the common tropes where they head to an alien planet → meet the local population → inevitably get mixed up in a problem → superheroes function as superheroes do → oh wait, this is a cop allegory again! i mean cmon wtf are they going to do in space if they’re not going to fight ppl. none of them know jackshit about galactic wildlife they’re getting poisoned if they try to repopulate an endangered species or some shit like that 😭😭

I'd like to state officially, for the record, that I think the Parallax retcon IS stupid as hell and if I worked for dc that garbage would be gone in an instant. Just like, FYI <3
#blah#just like... sooooooo stupid#just say you don't want characters to accept responsibility for their actions fir christs sake 🙄#saying this bc i ran into it for the first time reading the nu52 johns GL and its just so dumb actually#they literally had sinestro become parallax??????? thats not how that works??????? like bro. cmon.#like parallax also doesnt literally make hal more interesting too like come onnnn guysssss#its just so deeply stupid to me. like im not so pissed abt it that its the end of the world or whatever bc im not a hal gurlie like its not#the end of the world for me but literally like. what is the whole point of doing that arc if you don’t get the full angst from that arc.#insane to me.#anyways it would be so easy to unexist that. just say like parallax was dormant or smth and only woke up when hal died or whatever. and#that part of parallax like read hals mind and so has some of his memories or smth and that's why its called parallax. or its just some#creature that wasnt even involved but just wanted to fuck with him#bc thats a retcon like motivationally but it doesn't cancel out any of the parallax appearances needed for plot reasons or whatevs#while keeping characterization intact.#i mean in still working my way thru the comics including that arc but like im sure theres a way to do it that functions as a perfect retcon#where all plot events still happened just not some poeplr are lying or whatevs#lanterns#green lanterns#dc comics#parallax#hal jordan#swishy liveblogs

my long thesis statement on jack would be a fan of hal and kyle as green lanterns boils down to:
hal would remind him of dean. someone who does things that hurt everyone, himself, and kyle.
kyle would remind him of himself a bit. too much weight put on your shoulders and the person you admire has done some awful, awful things.

GrimmIchi - cats, rain, Ichigo's warm body
Tumblr media
Cats. I can't think of Grimmjow and not think of cats at the same time. I always love his cat attitude in fanfic. I imagine Grimmjow likes cats. (I'm sure of it and not even Mugetsu can convince me otherwise.)
Maybe Ichigo and Grimmjow were walking somewhere, maybe after a fight, maybe after a Hollow hunt? Maybe they were walking from somewhere. And they heard a quiet meow in an alleyway? Grimmjow has great hearing, he heard the meow and found a small, frozen kitten. Maybe the kitten is tiny and lonely. Grimmjow thinks he has no heart, but when he sees this kitten he feels a tug in his belly hole and feels sympathy? Maybe the kitten feels that Grimmjow is a cat and immediately runs up to him and grabs his hand and demands to be petted. Maybe Ichigo is barely holding back a nosebleed at the sweet sight? The rain is getting heavier but they both can't leave him here. Grimmjow can't leave him here. He takes the small kitten in his hand and hands it to Ichigo. "Your human body is warmer." Ichigo blushes like a strawberry but takes the kitten and hides it behind his jacket. Grimmjow holds a parallax over them and they go to Ichigo's house. Close together, with a quietly purring kitten.
Or… Grimmjow doesn't have a mask, so maybe it's an AU where there's no Shinigami and Hollow, and they're humans. Maybe Grimm is a "boy with problems", he has a tattoo by his eyes and a lot of others on his body. Maybe he fights on a rung, maybe he's a musician. Maybe he knows Ichigo, an English student, and they sometimes spend time together, even though people say they're from completely different backgrounds. Maybe Grimmjow likes cats and when they find a kitten he doesn't want his "image" to suffer and gives the cat to Ichigo. Ichigo thinks Grimmjow is cute with a blush. Or maybe it's something else…
Or in other words… After a terrible day, Grimm returns home. There is a terrible downpour, water flowing in rivers along the street. Suddenly, in the rain, he hears an angry voice. By the river, a small kitten meows mournfully as a young boy with fiery red hair takes it down from the tree. Gimmjow mutters quietly "crazy", but just then the wind blows and tugs at the red hair and he sees the freckled face of the Cat Rescuer. And he fell in love. He comes closer and gives Ichigo an umbrella and head. Grimmjow later walks him home and that's how their story begins. Theirs and the Panther.
Or maybe another way: Grimmjow as an Arrancar doesn't know the human world. He lived in it, but he doesn't know it, he doesn't remember. Sometimes it frustrates him terribly. But he remembers the cat. In his fragmentary memories, you can see a gray cat. Maybe that's why the only bearable and noteworthy thing in the human world are cats. And Ichigo, but cats are better because they don't talk as much as Berry.
Grimmjow may not want everyone to know he likes cats. Maybe he trusts Ichigo not to tell anyone, Berry isn't like that. It's easier to open up to him.

Hello, gravity falls fandom. I should be ashamed that I come with my scientific thoughts while everyone is crying about Billy’s sad background, but I feel it is my duty to express this take, because for some reason everyone is silent about it. I just need to get this off my chest about Bill.
We've got references to the Illuminati, a map of Oregon, All-seeing eye, Freemasons, and a whole lot of cultural symbolism that Bill represents. To me, Bill’s eye always carried a deeper meaning, something I’ve written about several times in my fanfiction sketches.
People perceive the world in three dimensions because we have two eyes.
Each eye captures the world from a slightly different angle, and this difference, known as binocular parallax, provides the brain with crucial information about depth and distance. The brain merges the images from both eyes, analyzes their differences, and creates our perception of depth—this is stereoscopic vision, or stereopsis. If a person had only one eye, their depth perception would be severely limited, relying solely on monocular cues. Which is literally the reason Bill Cipher has one eye. Logical reason. A reason that is considered and explains in its very essence.
If we take Bill’s native dimension as canonically two-dimensional, WHICH IS CANON, CAUSE EUCLIDUA IS TWI DIMENSIONAL IN ITS VERY DEFINITION AND ESSENCE. How does it make sense for the creatures that inhabit it to have two eyes? IT DOESN’T, that's the whole point. It’s illogical from a symbolic, evolutionary, and even basic logical standpoint.
The core of Cipher's character is that he’s stifled by the limitations of his two-dimensional existence. He craves more. This makes perfect scientific sense, especially in the context of Billford. Ford, who’s blind in one eye, literally cries blood after Bill takes over his body—it’s as if trying to force someone from a two-dimensional space to perceive three-dimensional reality breaks the very fabric of their existence.
Bill’s parents having two eyes? That makes no sense. It would be more logical if his native dimension considered one eye the norm, with Bill being the outlier who had two. Precisely because of his desire to go beyond the boundaries of existence and the definition of reality.
This is something I feel strongly about and want to shout from the rooftops. Thank you for attention. Would be grateful for sharing.

bart had to rework his life, his brain, his body just to fit the parameters of what whiteboy wallace and max considered ‘appropriate’ for a speedster, even tho he grew up in a fucking VIDEO GAME and was supposed to be conditioned into a terrorist weapon even tho his real fate was to die young and quick bc his very biology was against him surviving and that the speed force itself wanted him in its arms, but he FORCED himself to acclimate, even tho it was killing him inside, even tho the manchester junior high kids loved him, even tho max cared but was still unfit to parent, even tho whiteboy wallace couldn’t throw enough kind words his way, but HE KEPT GOING, and he made friends, grew to love carol, but that shit still hurt, so he was still Impulse first and Bart Allen the Civilian second, BUT THEN HE MET KON!
A FRIEND! SOMEONE HE COULD BE HIS TRUE SELF AROUND! WHERE HE DIDN’T NEED TO LIMIT HIMSELF JUST TO FIT IN! WHO HE COULD TEASE AND BOTHER AND TALK TO AND GIVE HEADPATS TO AND LISTEN TO!
Kon, who was his friend both in his original form, the superhero Impulse, and his civilian alter ego, Bart Allen of Manchester.
Kon, who was lonely and depressed and traumatized and terrible with women, but found friendship with a person who didn’t want to exploit him, or manipulate him, or use him for sex or for his powers, someone who only really just wanted to be his friend, and was! Bart Allen, Impulse, was his friend!
What if the love wasn’t supposed to be at first sight. What if it was supposed to be slow, and built upon pillars healing from individual grief and loss TOGETHER. what if it’s supposed to be based on a friendship that transcended even death and rebirth. what if even tho bart allen was always supposed to die, he COULDN’T stay dead, simply bc kon was still lost.
what if a man knew another man existed but didn’t think much about him until one day some kid makes grownups disappear, and now these men have to work TOGETHER. they exist, and their paths cross, but it’s not love at first sight, and there’s no shared legacy for them to fall into, but they keep crossing paths, when parallax destroys the universe, when there’s a world without grownups, and they HAVE to talk. they have to listen. they have acknowledge each other. and they do. little by little, over thirty years, through death and rebirth, separation and loss, reunion and going to a new home TOGETHER.
what if the love was a choice. what if they chose to care for each other even tho every aspect of the narrative sought to punt them both to hell. but couldn’t. bc bart allen CHOSE to find kon el in a broken multiverse. and when he did, kon el CHOSE to go home with him.

Remember that crack theory I made a while back that the reason no other heroes in My Adventures With Superman is that they're all going through the same thing as Clark at the same time? Imagine Brainiac Clark arguing with an Ares possessed Diana, Parallax possessed Hal, and fear gas influenced Bruce on who gets to destroy the world first with more mind controlled heroes arriving to join in the argument.

bill's mutation allows him to see the third dimention while having one eye because its on his face, towards the third dimention, with your logic a spider could see the eighth dimention, but it cant because the eyes arent pointed towards the eighth dimention
Tumblr media
You can see that Bill’s eye itself is also 3-dimensional? Like a dome
This could be what lets him see into the third dimension - or it could be the placement of his eye on the face of his figure instead of it’s edge (so he can look “up”)
Now, since you brought up spiders - we don’t have a reliable way of testing if they can really “see the eighth dimension” because we as humans only see three. For all I know, they could very well perceive something we can’t - or their 8 eyes just give them a more accurate perception of depth. Who knows! Here’s what I can find from a quick google, however:
Their eyes mainly serve to give them a wider scope of vision and detect movement/changes in light, but their eyesight isn’t that great.
Tumblr media
Here’s a little bit on how jumping spiders use their eyes:
Tumblr media
Anyways, people are free to draw and headcanon whatever they want, but I personally find giving the euclideans more than one eye counterintuitive.
Now, there are still ways of making it work - for example, they could have eyes on opposite sides, or they could have eyes like in your picture, but their brains might’ve never learned how to compare and contrast the two images it receives to effectively judge depth/see in 3D.
There are also ways to perceive depth with just one eye - for example, by moving an object that you’re looking at around and analyzing the parallax effect (closer objects move faster, farther objects move slower, etc), or judging distance to something if there’s areal perspective (landscape further away being more faint/blurry/washed out). I’m sure there’s other context clues that can help as well, but I’m not gonna get too deep into this because frankly, we’re talking about a funny character from a funny show, and as smart as Alex Hirsch is, I doubt he designed bill with scientific papers oh stereoscopic vision in mind (or maybe he did, who knows!).
I wish we had more information about Bill’s home world and how it functioned, because that could definitely give us some clues on how euclideans see. Do they even have parallax? Do they have areal perspective? Can they judge distance by the changing size of an object? Who knows. I’ve seen theories of euclydia looking like a platformer and theories of it being a flat plane bent into a tube, and I’ve seen people using Flatland as a close reference for how everything looked (although there are definitely canon divergences from it, like colors not being banned), and all sound fairly plausible to me. It’s really just what you want to believe in, at the end of the day, because this is all speculation.

Here have a funny spider my friend @gabrielgba doodled yesterday when I had to kill one that crawled into my bed lol.
