Timeline

Age 0:

She is born a sickly child to an unknown man and woman in Tokyo, Japan.

Age 9:

Her parents take her to a "hospital" in hopes that it can cure her of her illness.

The "hospital" turns out to be a lab secretly run by Chuohku scientists.

Her parents leave her there, promising to visit her when her operation is over.

She is soon used as a lab rat by scientists.

Age ???:

She is used in a variety of experiments, all for various reasons.

The experiments erase memories of her past life.

A large 'X' appears on her back, which causes the scientists to dub her as 'Subject X'.

Age ???:

One of the experiments causes her to grow a male reproductive part, turning her into a hermaphrodite.

The experiment also increases her sex drive, turning her into a nymphomaniac.

It also increases her physical power, giving her strength one does not normally see in a human.

She is force-fed strange pills to calm her down, which throws her hormones out of whack.

Age ???:

She is the sole survivor of the scientists' experiment, which is dubbed, 'Project Sigma'.

To prove it is effective, she is given a mission: █████████████████.

She returns home, and ██████████████████.

She returns to the lab, and delivers proof of the complete of her mission.

The experiment is dubbed a success.

Age ???:

An emergency goes off in the lab she is in, which throws the place into a panic.

Seizing her opportunity, she manages to escape from the labs, killing many Chuohku guards and scientists along the way.

She arrives in the city of Ueno, and lives among the homeless.

She suffers a headache and a nosebleed when trying to remember anything about her past.

Age 16:

She is forced to steal to feed herself, which often gets her beaten or punished.

She is frequently criticized as being 'weird' or 'abnormal'. She starts to hate the word 'normal'.

During an incident, she is arrested by a bunch of corrupt police officers, who beat and sexually assault her. She kills them in retribution, fleeing the police station.

The incident makes it way to Chuohku, who puts out a bounty for her arrest.

Hiding her appearance, she sneaks onto a bus and then a boat which takes her to Fukuoka.

Age 17:

Like before, she spends much of her time on the streets, stealing to make ends' meet.

She makes contact with a local Yakuza, and becomes an underling, doing odd jobs for them in exchange for cash.

During a job, she is beaten by a bunch of thugs who do not appreciate her on their turf.

She is saved by a large man named Ogura Shou, whom adopts her.

She starts learning how to fight in order to defend herself.

Age 18:

She soon comes across Tasuku and Ming Kawanoe.

Though she is initially distrustful of them, she soon starts to open herself up to them, becoming their friends.

The siblings teach her letters and numbers, making her smarter.

She names herself 'Sanyu Inouye', liking how the words sound.

With Tasuku's help, she manages to band all of the homeless in Fukuoka together, making them united.

She names the family, 'MIHANASA', which means 'forsaken'.

Age 19:

She quits her job as an underling, wanting to find better ways to make money.

She uses her talents to become a street performer, earning money from the populace.

She is spotted by Chiba Iwao, ringleader of the Freaks Circus.

He asks Sanyu to join his circus. She agrees, quickly becoming a central part of the show.

Age 21:

Present.

She is soon forced to join the D.R.B. by Chuohku.

She forms the Fukuoka Division rap battle team, MIHANASA, alongside Tasuku and Ming Kawanoe.

7: Luna, Kit, and Teddy are just essentially just me split up into three parts, so I guess they're all pretty similar to me, the one that's most like me out of the three of them is mostly just dependent on my current mood. If I had to pick one that was most similar to me based on how often I feel like I relate to them the most out of the three, I'd probably go with Kit

8: I have a lot of OCs, but the one who I relate to least is one who I can't really talk about that much because his existence is a spoiler. But simply put, he's a villain and has no redeeming qualities

12: Not that I can think of right now, but if I went back through all of my writing, I'm sure I'd find at least one. Oh wait, I actually just thought of one: Machine. I had to use it a lot in the 10th chapter to describe the slot machines, and while I tried to find other ways to describe them as well, the word machine ended up being used a lot

13: I actually don't think I've ever gotten any feedback on my writing (My memory isn't the best though, so sorry to anyone who actually did leave feedback if I forgot about you)

14: Nothing that I can really think of right now (That isn't obvious)

16: Most story ideas that I get for my OCs that aren't The E(gg)-Team or stories that give more backstory to them stem from me picking a Sonic game I like and inserting them into it (Like SatBK, Sonic at the Olympic Games, and Unleashed)

17: I actually don't have any projects that I'm actively writing right now other than The E(gg)-Team, just a bunch of stuff I plan out in my free time when I'm bored. I guess I can still just talk about one of these ideas though, so I'll do that. One of my planned stories is basically just a Yakuza game but in text form and with some of my OCs instead of human characters, which is kind of interesting since I did plan to make a Yakuza 0 AU at one point where all of the characters were replaced with both my OCs and canon Sonic characters

18: A piece of dialogue I really love is this excerpt of the conversation between Luna and Teddy near the end of Chapter 10:

“Okay, good for you that you figured out that mystery, but I’m not going to wait for you any longer. I’m not burning to death because of you,” Luna told him

“Nobody’s going to be burning to death because of me!” He quickly stated

It's way better in context, but I don't blame you if you haven't read through 18k words to get that context. I can't really put into words why I think it's so good, but I just really like it

19: One line that I think you should all keep in mind is "If I were you, I would appreciate all the kindness that was given to me. It's a horrible life to lead with nobody there for you," which Kit says in Chapter 8. This will be important later on

Moviebob can’t really contemplate anything without running it through the lens of the online culture war he’s obsessed with. So much of what he believes in boils down to “owning the nerds” or whatever group he dislikes. It’s kind of sad, actually. I remember being a fan of his videos years back.

Texhnolyze.

It’s a post apocalyptic anime set in an underground city. It’s a cyberpunk dystopia centered around Texhnolyzation, artificial body parts. It follows Ichise, a prize fighter who is maimed and has an arm and leg replaced. The city is run by a series of gangs and everything is turned on its head when a man from the surface comes down and sets off a gang war.

The show is incredibly bleak. Lot’s of violence, cruelty, and philosophical musings on what the end of humanity would look like. Though Ichise is the main character, he’s more of a view point so the audience can see the real main character, Onishi a yakuza-esque gang leader who wants to bring peace to the city.

The show really sticks with you when you finish it. They journey to the surface near the end and what they find is fascinating and nightmarish.

11 Years of Manga Therapy

Today, this blog is 11 years old. And it all feels like the past year went by so suddenly despite a pandemic that’s shut off almost everything.

Given that everything was at such a standstill, a good number of my thoughts from the blog when it turned 10 still stand. I will talk about a few new things that came to my mind recently and over the past year.

COVID-19 sucks. I have a lot of compassion for those who are just trying to survive. I’m sick of this need to be productive for the sake of being productive during a time where life isn’t normal at all. A lot of people have no outside help for basic needs. I find myself to be very fortunate and I owe that to the support systems in my life. I wish they had what I have.

I don’t know how I found the need to blog for this long even when it’s okay to just stop. But after the little rant I wrote a couple of days ago, I find that social media is too transient for what I really want to say. It’s platforms like Tumblr/WordPress that provide outlets for more concise thoughts. I still love manga and there’s always fascinating titles/stories (like My Broken Mariko pictured above) that can mostly be told via manga waiting to be explored.

What else? I got a PlayStation 4 last year and finally saw for myself the renewed popularity of Japanese video games post-2016. The PS3 era disappointed me and got me away from gaming. I’m excited to see where Japanese games go from here after playing through various games since my console purchase.

Plus playing a bunch of Yakuza (I played through Yakuza 0, Judgment, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon) games got me into riichi mahjong. It all started from doing a mandatory mahjong side-quest in Judgment to unlock the chance to fight the game’s superboss that got me into it. I couldn’t get mahjong at first, but I had help from my parents who played mahjong their whole lives despite regional rule differences. I struggled at mahjong for a while until I decided to try it again in Yakuza: Like a Dragon after I finished the main story. I’ve been hooked ever since after taking the time to understand the rules and how to properly win. I now read riichi mahjong books and want to start playing more Mahjong Soul (a gacha-style mahjong game with cute anime characters). Once the pandemic is finally over, I think I’ll try going to a local riichi mahjong club near me and see what it’s like offline.

What I like about mahjong is that the game is a metaphor for life. My dad sent me a video of Julia Roberts talking about her love of mahjong. She said that mahjong is like sorting your life out of chaos. I find that to be strikingly true. A big part of learning mahjong is WWYD (What would you discard?) as you need to draw tiles to make a winning combination and throw away ones that won’t help you win. Yet while certain tiles will help you win, there are times where you need to throw out tiles that are considered to be safe in order to not lose big. In various points in life, there’s things you need to toss away in order to become better and/or safer. To be honest, we’re not always perfect at what to throw away. I feel the complexities of mahjong is good practice for me in understanding that not everything’s going to go our way even if we’ve done a lot of good for the world.

Finally, I’m starting to embrace myself as a non-binary thinker. I support important cultural movements and find them necessary. Yet I know there are always voices still being shut out despite good intentions and alternatives. It’s disrespectful to believe that everyone all happily agrees with one another when that’s not really the case. I don’t think we truly listen enough to each other and try to shout so much about how important this and that are without considering that some things are helpful for some people while some aren’t.

Empathy isn’t enough. You can understand someone’s suffering, but it doesn’t mean that you’re willing to sit with them through it. I think the person who’s suffering wants compassion more than just empathy. I want people to see there’s power in knowing uncomfortable truths in everything.

Of course, I’m not sure there’s room for someone like me up in a world of absolutes. It’s fine. I relish where I’m at and I now know that I’m not alone in my thinking. I’m also thinking about changing the name of this blog because truth be told, I’m not sure the name “Manga Therapy” is right anymore because I’m not a licensed mental health professional. I’m more on an peer/advocate level. I know some of you may disagree, but calling myself “therapy” feels like an insult to the mental health profession and does disservice to anyone with serious mental illness that doesn’t have the luxury to enjoy the privileges (i.e. reading manga as a way to process emotions) that most of us have.

That’s about it. Thanks for reading and following me this past year (or longer)! I just want you all to survive somehow this year. Nothing more.

Age || 26, Height || 6′0″, Occupation || Professional Assassin 

Quirk || Reform: it gives him the ability to grow or shrink objects that he touches at will. He can only use this on one thing at a time, and there is a limit to the ratio as how large and small he’s able to make each object. He also isn’t able to use his quirk on any humans/living beings, it can only be used on inanimate objects.

Personality || A bit cold and socially awkward, Vamp is a man of few words and doesn’t really have many people close to him that he speaks with casually. He doesn’t MEAN to come off as rude, he simply doesn’t have much to say. He takes his job very seriously, and very loyal and reliable. Expert use of his quirk and his skills make him very good at what he does. Vamp is often teased for having an ‘old man personality’, but if someone is fortunate enough to befriend him, they’ll find he actually enjoys making small jokes, having a drink and relaxing. He also loved playing cards.

     Alias || Duchess. Real Name || Aimi Sakai

Age || 18, Height || 5′6″, Occupation || Heiress

Quirk || Recollection: Aimi has the ability to slightly alter small details and events in another person’s’ memory. Through physical touch, she can change details such as what someone remembers wearing or saying or doing within a certain memory, but she isn’t able to alter whole events or memories that date back longer than a year or two. Overuse of her quirk can give her headaches and effect her own memory recollection as well. 

Personality || She has a very princess-y attitude and holds herself to very high standards. She considers herself a social butterfly, and DOES enjoy speaking with others on occasion, very polite and social despite her family lineage. Her father is the head of a notorious gang, similar to but not aligned with the yakuza. Aimi is trained to defend herself, though she prefers not to get her hands dirty. She has a strong disdain for heroes and hero society, and speaks on this vocally while still keeping her collected and refined demeanor. {Her father's quirk allows her to completely wipe memories, while her mother had a reality warping quirk}.

Alias || Yukio or Couteau. Real Name || Yukio Blanchet-Uguni

Age || 25, height || 5′10″, Occupation || Villain

Quirk || Weapon Mimicry: Yukio is able to transform parts of his body into weapons he’s familiar with. He can only transform one part of his body at a time, and it’s limited to weapons he has knowledge of. Also, his quirk doesn’t come with mastery of that weapon, so he has to either do research or make things up as he goes. If a transformed limb is injured, the limb is also injured, but his quirk comes with a healing factor {though this does not apply to MAJOR injuries}.

Personality || Truly chaotic-neutral. Yukio is a French-Japanese man who moved to Japan after creating quite the criminal record in France. With no active end-goal, and a body count behind him of around five, he thrives around chaotic situations. He’s quick to jump headfirst into any fight, any danger and anything that could involve either of these things. Yukio enjoys drinking, being loud, causing trouble and bothering people. Despite his obnoxious attitude, he’s a decent person to call a friend, even if he isn’t really THAT trustworthy sometimes.. 

Alias || Radiation.  Real Name || [redacted] goes by Zuno

Age || 28, height || 5′8″, Occupation || Killer and Thief for Hire

Quirk || Wave Radiation allows Zuno to emit two different types of waves from her body in a six foot radius. The first are EMPs, destroying any and all electronic devices around her. Cellphones, cameras, televisions, anything similar, glitch out and become unusable around her. She uses this during any heists and infiltration missions. The second type are Radioactive. These can cause radiation poisoning symptoms in her opponents. She can’t isolate these waves, therefore anyone within her radius can be effected. Zuno only uses this when necessary, due to overuse causing symptoms in her body as well. 

Personality || Despite her job, Zuno is a very laid back and chill person. She enjoys daily civilian life, and it’s almost hard to tell that she’s a merciless killer and thief by hire.She says hello to locals, speaks with people that are ALMOST considered her friends. Zuno is kind to young children, and hides her hatred of heroes behind jokes that are just SLIGHTLY too close to..not being jokes anymore. While on the job, her personality changes SIGNIFICANTLY. She becomes distant and cold, cut off. She’s aware of Vamp as well, as they have worked together on occasion.

Alias || Skull  Real Name || [redacted] Goes by Skull or Osamu

Age || 19, height || 5′6″, Occupation || Villain

Quirk || Bone Manipulation allows them to control bones, more specifically the collagen that they’re made of. With their quirk, they can immobilize others, use their own bones as weapons, and raise skeletons as zombie-like minions, the latter being their favorite to do. They can use their own bones, pulled from their body as weapons. When they pull them, their body immediately replaces them within themselves {though this process is slightly painful, they simply relish in the feeling}. 

Personality || Skull’s personality is a fun mixed bag of mystery. No one can really tell what they’re up to or what they’re thinking. They love to keep people on their toes, at sometimes coming off as playful, other’s he’s incredibly serious, but the one thing that remains consistent is his want for fun and love of wanting to take apart human bodies and collect skulls. He has no real allegiance nor ties and loves spicy foods.

i gotta say yakuza… i LOVE the characters i think they’re really awesome and the game looks fun but for some reason i just can’t finish it lol. i’ve started yakuza 0 like a million times but never got farther than like the tutorial 💔

19: which game do you think deserves a revival?

ok i have two for this one. the first is kirby’s epic yarn because even though kirby is obviously still an ongoing series i want more YARN specifically. i love that game so much it’s so close to my heart i think there should be a second one in that style ^_^ second i’d say portal! i want another portal game sooooo bad i think it’s time for a comeback

23: biggest disappointment you’ve had in gaming?

i also have two for this one! first is the last of us 2. i never played either game in that series but i watched my brother play the first one and it’s an AWESOME game…. and yet the sequel sucks so bad it should barely be considered a part of the same series…… they really dropped the ball on that one which is so sad considering the potential it had for an interesting sequel. second is zero escape 2. i’m not sure WHAT i expected considering that game is made by the people who made danganronpa but i hate that game sooooooo much it was such a waste of time and i expected better considering the first one is actually pretty good <3

So, I cried. That's a given.

Also this might be the most overwhelmingly happy ending in the series so far, you know, if you're used to every entry ending with "KIRYU DIE?????"

Bonus points because this ending DID NOT immediately reveal that he lives! I know my intro here is all unserious and the like but genuinely, that does a lot for making the scene so much more impactful and it worked here even though I know he returns for Y6.

So, I'm gonna do this post like the last big post because there's too many thoughts to expel.

Timestamps as I rewatch so I can share my thoughts. Then a short conclusion because honestly? This game has taken all my words multiple times.

I just want to calmly and happily say my final piece at the end :)

0:39 - Spoiler, this ending SUCKS because it doesn't include a final rhythm battle for Haruka! Now I think I read somewhere that there's a member of that assassin clan she can dance battle as a final challenge but I clearly didn't do that right and missed out and that's beside the point- THERE'S NO RHYTHM GAMEPLAY IN THIS FINALE >:(

9:00 - I EARNED IT, I'M USING IT!

13:00 - Spoiler for later, Shinada doesn't get to say this from what I recall. Instead Baba gets a different wake up call, but that works out :)

17:00 - Not now, but this will come up, I offer to you my johns for what happens in the first boss fight. My eyes were dry as hell so I missed some QTEs which means I didn't get the flashiest stuff to happen. This actually happened at the end of Y4 also but I restarted just to capture good footage- not this time.

17:30 - MOUSE. MOUSE MOUSE, A LITTLE RAT, MOUSE. Love to see it.

19:00 - The audible sigh I let out when they played the same song I've heard like 40 times in my playthrough was palpable. I do dig the song! But there are what? 4 Idol songs? They really needed more or to not saturate their use so much :(

19:40 - I legitimately gasped and went "Oh no... of course it's you!" at Baba's role in this. It added a lot of weight to the way he practically begged Haruka not to show up.

20:50 - So here's the gist. Majima's plan didn't work out, we know that. Majima has a REALLY good line and motivator moment where he says he's following orders now to protect Haruka because she means more to Kiryu than anything (and that's how Majima rolls), Majima then reveals some shit which can be amounted to "I think you've gotten weak and wanted to protect you!!!!" which does ring slightly hollow since we saw Majima at a ridiculously low point earlier. So either his low point was him contemplating Saejima's survival chances, or his low point was sincere (it sure sounded it) and his worry over Saejima being weak was just also happening at the same time. I don't really mind either way to be honest, we beat him up. I fail some QTEs.

33:00 - Baba deciding not to fulfill his orders on his own accord is actually extremely important and good as hell. It shows that all this changed him and gave him the motivation to forge his own path- or rather it began to though he's overwhelmed with doubt. It's extremely good.

33:50 - The fact he intentionally leaves evidence shows how much doubt he has though, he's giving up entirely more than forging his own path, he's just refusing to follow the orders of another but hasn't found the strength to continue on his own. It's really good is all.

38:00 - This was the first cry I had beating the game x.x Shinada is just a phenomenally likeable character, and watching him accept where his life has gone and what it's meant to others is way more touching than I'd assume considering it's a tale of a baseball star.

40:50 - THIS WAS HYPE AS HELL AND LEAD TO MY SECOND CRY. THIS PRISON FAMILY HAS NO RIGHT BEING THIS ENDEARING. Also, more or less, they get to deliver the message Shinada was supposed to lol.

42:50 - THIRD AND BIG AS HELL CRY. SHINADA YOU FOOL, YOU'VE A FOUND FAMILY AFTER-ALL!!! I genuinely adore this moment so much is all. It's such a wonderful payoff for this loveable fool. After all the runnin' away he has a home.

43:36 - I love Shinada so much the silly fuck.

46:00 - I got a laugh out of Akiyama KICKING ASS in the news footage (didn't mention but the first brawl cutscene was rather lacking wasn't it?) and Kiryu just like... punches a guy. It's hilarious to me. Also you best believe- I UNLOCKED IT, I'M USING IT!!!

48:00 - Now this is a, well, it's a bad reveal. Like look, there is a metric ton of good going on in this finale- but the reveal that Aizawa is his son and is evil and is the final boss is just too much zero-build-up-payoff. It's the worst part. It's not like extremely detrimental or anything- like it doesn't take away from the good stuff- but it's just entirely uninteresting and bad. It makes Aizawa's interest in Morinaga bizarre and uninteresting since he got no payoff, he had buildup with Saejima and then in the final scenes he's just like "Yeah, Mori was nice but who gives a fuck I am the one who killed him (I think he said) and I aspire to be strong as fuck because all of YOU IDIOTS have FRIENDS and CHARISMA >:(" and like, who fuckin' cares bud.

52:00 - Now I'll more or less sum up all of Akiyama's payoff here. 1- I unlocked it so I'm gonna use it! 2- He offhandedly says he wants to be a legend in this town, which in Y4 he already was- he was a myth, a city mystery- but of course he means like Kiryu not the loch ness monster. 3- He gets to be a legend by being the only civilian (or person in general) the Omi would bow to. It's kind of not built up at all and is a bit lame, but to be honest Akiyama has a pretty bit part in this entire game. He's kinda just a convenient returning character with motivation to assist Kiryu and a career that allows motivation to get involved through Park. To be blunt, his part in the story is weak. I wish it was stronger. But it's inoffensive and he at least gets something- as minor as it is. Getting to say he's king of the world is something, you know?

56:00 - I will say that the build up of "Oh shit, these are Kanai's men!" and the reveal that "Oh shit! They are WATASE'S men and all the clans who the Tojo were seeking alliances with!" is a good one. Watase is a fine enough character which I bring up only because I was told he was a standout- but he wasn't for me. His scenes are great, his growth with Katsuya is nice, but he's barely in the game and really only exists to be betrayed and then to be like "I'm one of the good yakuza despite being a war-lusting one because being a good yakuza is just complicated enough to allow this overlap" which is interesting for sure, but I don't know. Unless he does stuff in the subsequent games I didn't catch much in this one. Maybe he does- I assume he runs the Omi now!

1:00:00 - I kinda summed it up but yeah. Here's the final boss, Aizawa, a character we were mislead on and who's motivation is empty as fuck. It's, whatever. It's not the good part of the ending. The good part is everything prior and directly after. Like his entire deal is anti-silver-spoon talking points but also he includes being charismatic or capable as silver spoon-isms??? He pretty much just wants to be leader because he's strong. He'd arguably be more interesting if he just said it that way.

1:11:00 - The lyrics to Dream are anything but subtle and I love them and I love Haruka. Sliding this in here- Majima gets no payoff >:( Park's dream is accomplished in seeing her star on the stage, but no Majima moment? No sight of him accepting her loss? Lame.

1:14:00 - I genuinely LOVE that Aizawa focuses in on Kiryu's gunshot wound. He still accepts it as a fair fight because Kiryu presents it as one, but even then he pays mind to it as you'd expect someone wanting to fight at their strongest would- he wants to fight Kiryu at his best and he's accepting this because Kiryu presents as his best even when wounded- it's pretty cool. Fight happens. It's fine stuff, flashy and fun. Still maybe the weakest final boss yet because he has no build up. I'd be the first to admit without looking it up I can't list every final boss thus far, but like, Nishi was built up, Mine was built up, Goda was built up, I just, in this moment, don't recall having a big "WHO THE FUCK, THIS MEANS NOTHING?" fight in yakuza and this is certainly one of those.

1:25:00 - I cried AGAIN. Haruka just hit me with a truck of emotion here is all.

1:41:15 - This is a beautifully shot, emotional, and tragic looking ending. Heck, at 1:43:00 I initially thought he was being awoken in a hospital bed and I was like "Heh, there's the old Kiryu dies fakeout!" but no! They hammer home, they go for broke, they give a TRAGIC AS FUCK bitter ending on top of an ending that's like 99% happy as fuck in terms of offering everyone involved hope for the future. This was a good end :)

So then, some overall thoughts I maybe didn't get out- I mean there's no way this post touches everything but I want to at least try to because I like sharin' the experience and what I got out of it.

The fighting styles were mighty uneven as far as strengths or fun factor. To be blunt,

Kiryu has an overpowered counter attack and heat mode and since heat mode is underwhelming as hell that means he has JUST a counter attack- his strikes don't really hit all that well considering the improvements other characters saw this time around, so he's a bit one note here.

Saejima feel even meatier than before, nothing particularly 'stands out' but the fact that he has super armor as long as he has heat is a pretty big factor in making him feel good to use.

Akiyama got the short end of the straw this time around. His new gimmick is the launch combos and they are... well... less than shit at least from what I could feel during gameplay. They don't hurt much, they burn heat like crazy, and they can MISS, all while being a move that targets just one enemy- has no counter to blocking or armor- and provides no armor in turn.

Despite not losing anything, he kinda got screwed.

(I'm lead to believe Akiyama is invulnerable during his aerial combos which my blurb in my finale post complained felt worthless and cited that as a reason.

If so then I was wrong but I still hold all my other complaints towards it, just not the 'it has no armor or invuln' bit assuming that's true.)

Shinada wins out for being unique and being a weapon oriented character that actually does well with weapons. Weapons have always been something I pretty much ignore in Yakuza and the series itself has always desperately tried to make them interesting with things like weapon skills, Kamiya works, and the like. But other than the god weapons like the golden gun weapons just never felt good to manage.

Using them, sure, that's fine, but managing them? Durability and skills and limited movesets and all that? Nah. But Shinada really does a lot to make them less shit! His innate abilities that raise durability a metric ton REALLY make weapons feel better to use with him- and his unique movesets with weapons are pretty damn good (mostly. The pipe/'normal one hander pole size object' moveset is worthless as heck, it regularly misses).

He's fun.

Revelations were a miss this time around for me. Since you couldn't have seen them if you tried on my blog let it be known- I ONLY got the quest related revelations for each character- which is to say- ONE rev per character.

Revelations in 5 are weapon based, and not just 'bat or pole or gun' or whatever- they are DISPOSABLE TEMPORARY weapon based.

What you are supposed to do is go to the specific place on the map where that one revelation weapon spawns, hope like hell you find an enemy, and wail on them like crazy. If you use a weapon x amount of times then you'll get a revelation according to the internet. This is beyond ridiculous and means a normal playthrough will get none of these, while a focused one will be bored out of their mind GRINDING to get these.

I did not bother.

Yakuza 5.

This might be my favorite Yakuza overall.

I still think 0 is probably the best overall for most people, it has the best style, it has from what I've experienced the best gameplay, it's story is tear jerking and exciting and fun.

But as a yakuza game overall, I really have to give it to 5 personally. Because 0 tried to work within its bounds- it made itself a great entry point to the series or a great addition to Yakuza 1 / Kiwami as background.

But 5 is building on 4 previous games and it does so fucking phenomenally.

There's something to be said about a later entry in a series gaining extra payoff thanks to multiple entries of build up and character depth and 5 fucking does it.

I just. It explores the motivation of some fan-favorites so well, it expands characters so fucking well, I know I've harped on about it but just Saejima- man! Saejima goes from a run of the mill "Decent" character to a fully fledged and explored entity! And I LOVE him!

And no he's not the only shining spot, like hell he is, but he's such a posterchild for what 5 does right in my eyes- take something that's already good and breath some life into it. Also I adore it's laser focus on a singular theme and all the ways it wanted to explore it.

Like. I think Kiwami and Zero take the cake for the most fun I've had " 'playing' Yakuza so far, but 5 takes the cake for the most fun I've had 'in general' like gameplay and me just thinking about it because there's so much to think on.

More time will tell as I compartmentalize my thoughts and perhaps forget some details as one does, but right this moment- this might be my favorite Yakuza game.

I love it.

Also, woot! I beat Y5 before Monhun Rise came out :D Now I can start that game without putting a story on hold!

Except I also told my sister that I'd start Omori after Y5. So I guess alongside monhun I'll be playing through a game with a hefty and wonderfully done story. Which is what I didn't want to do with Y5.

3: Best game you’ve ever played? WEEEELLLL.......let me preface this with two things: one, i am a FAKE GAMER as in my laptop is not at all made for gaming, it’s piss poor, so a big chunk of games i’m interested in is because i watched a playthrough of them lol. i have a 3ds but only 3 games on it (animal crossing new leaf, tomodachi life, nintedogs & cats). second, i’m very bad at choosing favorites of things.....BUUUUT .....i choooooose, in no particular order, OFF, pigeonetics, elder scrolls oblivion, pathologic classic HD!! i’m more than likely forgetting a few though, so sorry about that

4: Worst game you’ve ever played? as i said above, cannot choose favorites, neither can i choose whatever the opposite of favorites is but...uhh, does lif even count as a game? like lif, the stupid little furry flash game i remember playing on some shady website. it was surprisingly very active with a BUNCH of people there but i kept dying like every 5 seconds....AWFUL

6: A game that’s changed you the most? WELL define Changed.....ummm aha first thing that comes to mind is OFF. it’s one of those things where you never knew you wanted something so fucking bad until you saw it--and it’s like that for me. i NEVER knew i loved that odd, surreal, colorful, “looks playful and simple in some parts but incredibly violent and unnerving in other parts” aesthetic til i played it. like aesthetically i love that game to BITS and something about it just stuck with me til the end of time.

later in life (meaning, past year or so) it changed me because it taught me a lesson about storytelling and creative endeavors. a very useful lesson. which is: things don’t really need to have a meaning. stories, art, music, writing, whatnot, while it CAN be deep and meaningful, while you CAN use it as a way to communicate with the world about all kinds of heartfelt things, it can also be...nothing, really.

once i, as usual, got ridiculously overwhelmingly sad about small things. specifically seeing other people around me come up with all kinds of deep and meaningful characters and stories, sometimes putting them into webcomics or writings of theirs, and they were all so well-thought out and detailed and what i envied most was people put a lot of themselves and their experiences into them, venting and coping through them, whilst also making these larger-than-life grandiose complex stories and worlds and so on and so forth.

it made me look at my own ideas and get mad/frustrated at how shallow they were. but then i remembered OFF and i felt better because Fun Fact, mortis ghost has a now-abandoned dA account and if you go through the comment section on his profile, he answers a lot of fan questions and he mentions several times that the game didn’t really have a “meaning”, it didn’t really have a “deeper story” or moral or anything, really. i’m paraphrasing this but i vividly remember him saying “i wanted to make a game, so i did”.

that made me feel a lot better because it made me realise that sometimes art--especially stories, in my case-- doesn’t NEED to be DEEP or have MEANING...sometimes it can just BE!!!! sometimes it really can just be all about AESTHETICS like who GIVES a shit if there’s a hidden meaning if you take the first letter of all of your characters’ names and put them backwards, sometimes all that matters is if they just VIBE with you y’know....

yume nikki is similar in this regard bc that game doesn’t have any story other than “collect egg” and yet it’s so impactful. that game doesn’t have a story or meaning it just IS........ :) GOD THATS SO LONG IM SORRY ABOUT THAT but yeah. funny violent ghostbusting baseball man is a game that changed me :)

7: A game you’ll never forget? OFF AGAIN LOL,,, it’s just so memorable because of how unique it is. visuals, soundtrack, story, everything is so memorable. unforgettable. oh god you can tell how much i love this damn game can’t you

11: Hardest game you’ve played? i am a shitty gamer so this is Most games i’ve played lol!! but uhh..well you see. hardest game i remember playing as of recent is pathologic classic hd in which it’s...not only hard to understand what any character is saying at any given time lol but also, i don’t think it’s HARD it’s just...you need to focus. you REALLY need to fucking focus and pay attention in this game. so i wouldn’t say its HARD, but i’m only putting this here bc it’s in recent memory.

i say recent memory because the true answer is susceptible to “yeah, but now you’re older, it must not be so hard.” as in if i played it now i think i’d have a way easier time. but when i was around....10-12 years old i had several ps3 video game adaptations of animated movies and i had SUCH a fucking hard time with them. g-force, bolt and up in particular were fucking HARD. like genuinely, the hardest time i had EVER had in my live playing video games is tied to these three fucking games. g-force and bolt ESPECIALLY. one particular level in bolt took both me AND my sister around a year to fucking finish.

again, i was baby, so i bet i’d have a much easier time with them now that i’m 17. but for now, in my experience, bolt and g-force for the ps3 were harder than pathologic classic. i think icepick lodge should take a few notes for them for pathologic 2.

From what game? i can’t think of any character i like, HATE...with a burning passion.. there are a few i dislike or have a complicated relationship with though.. i’m not interested in the series anymore but ouma from drv3...i’ll admit that he is a bit fun sometimes, especially in the very early beginning he’s a likeable brat but as the game progresses he becomes more irritating than anything and i have an issue with him in regards to writing, despite the fact that i have never been awake in any english class ever lol. it’s too long to put in this already long post but i’ll keep it at that. if you like him, well, good for you for finding joy in something i couldn’t! but he just doesn’t do it for me.

SERIOUSLY, it’s an amazing game about amazing animals and it teaches genetics in a very simplified and efficient way!! genetics is SO hard for me to understand, i fucking hated studying it but this game really helped me understand how it works AND its super engaging and interesting!! 30: A game that hasn’t been localized in your country that you think should be localized? i have no idea how video game localization really works....but i assume localizing a game in india would mean something like, removing content according to cultural norm and also somehow translating it into the 22 official languages..? or just two or three language if it’s tied to a particular state, which seems way more doable. i honestly have no idea? i’ve never interacted w the indian gaming community that much to be honest, all i know of it is of the video games i’ve seen sold in some game stores and a few whispers about like solid snake or whoever from my school’s cafeteria....the most popular games here, to my knowledge, are those very streamable games like fortnite and PUBG and your call of duties and whatnot. those generic shooters. and even then, that honestly isn’t the “indian” gaming community bc this country is so FUCKHUGE, it’s just tamil nadu. one state.

Thank you friend! (Sorry for the long silence guys, I’m in the last month before my wedding and shit is Real. But it’s all for a very happy occasion X3 Just bear with me a bit longer.)

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?  

Oh, NBC Hannibal, hands down. I’m sorry, not trying to be mean to other fandoms, but the Hannibal fandom has legit spoiled me For Life. Not only are all the people you meet nice (and that’s true for every fandom I’ve ever been in for the most part), but the content is NOBEL PRIZE worthy, the meta is ASTRONOMICAL, the fan vids and gifs are gorgeous, the content creators are generous, gracious, and actively involved with the fandom. Just... I hate to use the word, but the level of discourse in the Hannibal fandom is truly a cut above. I’ve never seen meta like I’ve seen Hannibal meta, not even in the LOTR or Untamed fandoms, it sates a deep and precious desire in my soul. I fucking love the show and I fucking love the fandom, bless every last little cannibal heart <3 

8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?

My wife had mentioned that her brother was starting to play this game, Yakuza 0. I had heard of it before but knew nothing about it. Her brother is a game designer though and has very good taste so if he was enjoying it, it was probably good. Still, I wasn’t particularly interested until my wife started telling me about it. How there were these two protags, a young man trying to clear his name and beat the odds and another young man with an impossible responsibility. And no matter how bad things were for the first young man, and they were Bad, things were somehow, always, 10 times worse for the second young man. Sounded like a pretty good story to me. 

But I still didn’t get into it until I cam home from work one night and my wife was watching probably the fifth fight with Kuze. She wanted to stop since I had come home and she knew I wasn’t into it. But I didn’t want to make her stop so I sat and watched for awhile, because it was very pretty and the graphics were very smooth. And since we were neck deep in plot, she backtracked for me to Kiryu meeting Tachibana and then... him. The manager of the Grand. Oh brother, sister, I ain’t got words for my reaction to that. 

So yeah, that’s approximately how it happened and then I just slammed through the rest of the games with her and here we are : |

11. Who is your current OTP?

Oh man, Yakuza’s got a lot of good ships. But mmmmmmm. There is but one king. 

19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?

Always! There’s always a couple ships in every fandom I’m in that are popular and I can see why, but I’m just not feeling them. 

Daigo/Ryuji is the big one. I know it’s very popular, but I’m just not feeling it. I’m not quite sold on the whole rival thing, but then I don’t like how “rivals” are written 99% of the time. There’s a lot of cute Majima/Nishitani content on my dash right now, very sweet, and I get ti, but definitely not my ship. Hmmm, there are probably others, but those are probably the big ones for this fandom. 

I go back and forth on Kiryu/Nishikiyama. I like it a lot as a past history thing, an aborted relationship, something they tried that didn’t quite pan out, or maybe something they wanted to try and never did. Especially because I think Nishiki definitely did have confused feelings on his side, or at least was willing to entertain romantic notions. His attachment and hero worship of Kiryu often skews that way. Not sure about Kiryu’s side. I mostly think he thinks of himself too much as a big brother to Nishiki, too responsible for him, to view him as a possible partner. But I think that background history would be a really cool thing to influence Kiryu’s take on later possible relationships. So I dunno, I go real back and forth.

22. Is there anything you regret writing?

Oh, woof, probably. If you look deep on my AO3 account, there’s some Sherlock shit. So, there’s a scarlet letter for that. I’ve written some trash for Doctor Who, I’ve written some good stuff too, but I’ve written some trash. 

You have to understand, I’ve been writing fanfic since I was 12. That’s 15 years I’ve been writing, more than half my life. So sure, I’m embarrassed of the shit I started out with and that’s why I don’t have links back to my FF.net account. That was a different me from a very different time and not at all a reflection of who I am or my capabilities now. However. Those gave me a great deal of joy to write while I was writing them and I was quite proud of them at the time. I do not wish to do them a disservice or my past self a disservice by calling them bad. They’re not bad, they were the best I could do at the time and I was right for posting them. I try not to look back and cringe because that’s not fair to past me. I was doing my best and they made me happy. I’m still doing my best and it makes me happy. So really, how can I scoff or judge? 

I do sometimes worry about all my unfinished works. If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’re probably well aware that I don’t finish shit all the time. And I know I have disappointed many with my inconsistency there and I do genuinely feel bad about that. I’m trying to do better and am very proud of myself to have completed two major works (major for me anyway) during the pandemic. That’s a great deal of progress for me and I’m proud of that. I’m trying to form good writing habits and expectations and not do injury to myself or readers with poor writing habits. 

We all have regrets man but I think I can say that I work very hard at not having writing regrets and mostly I have been successful c:

TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON:  - smile /  facial features. outside of aesthetics, you can tell if someone is superficial or genuine through the intensity of their smile, or if they’re fabricating their appearance or background. i wouldn’t want someone to pretend for me. i want them to be how they are. - personal care. i don’t have preferences on hair / grooming outside of being well-kempt. file your nails & clean them ( like if ur a mechanic or factory worker or other types of physical labor, i get it-- but like an office worker with black nails? ick ), brush/comb/finger detangle/style your hair, make sure your clothes are reasonably presentable... clean, like you actively tried to come up with an ensemble. - physique. not saying people need to be like 8 pack or straight out the gym. nor am i saying i need someone to be like mega massive or mega thin. but preferably someone who like... is comfortable in the skin they’re in, and cares about their body. at the least, cares about what goes in their body and how much their body does for them. 

4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF:  haribo snacks.

5. A FOOD YOU HATE: i cannot handle the smell of mustard or mayonnaise. i will literally walk out of a room.

6. GUILTY PLEASURE:  i try to cut out needless carbs and snack foods, but y’all........ throw some good naan or pita at me and i’m a sucker. i love my hot cheetos and takis, pls don’t take them from me.

7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN:  a sweater and panties tbh. i’ve turned into that basic single person in their 20s. if i’m cold i’ll throw on sweatpants too.

8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS:  i vastly prefer serious relationships, but there’s got to be a lot of build up to it for me to pursue someone in that manner. that being said, idk why, apparently i seem unapproachable or intimidating, but i’ve always had to ask out the person i liked.... ask me out first, u fools. i’ve tried to do flings but like i always feel guilty afterward bc i’m not invested, i just pretend hoping maybe i’ll fool myself in the process and i don’t lmao. that being said, it’s been like over a year since i’ve last dated, and two years had passed between that partner and the previous one.

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: nothing. maybe switch my triple minor to an interdisciplinary double major because that sounds cooler in this point in my life. but other than that? i feel like i did well with the cards that were handed to me. they shaped me into who i am now. and now i’m trying to continue to be a person past me would be proud of. i want to live a life with little to no regrets. to pursue everything i can while i have the opportunity to.

ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: physically, yes. emotionally, it depends. my coworkers are always either thrilled to see me or are like “ it’s paci being over the top cute. ” i love coming into the room to give hugs or do random acts of service or to shower someone with surprise gifts just to say i appreciate them. however, i can be emotionally distant at times and i don’t like to involve people into things. i still feel guilty on most occasions when i vent,  even though i know it’s healthy to do. i feel like it’s not other people’s responsibility to deal with my problems or have to endure them, even if it’s as little involvement as listening. such an attitude isn’t great, but... at least i can recognize that now? lmao. u know. baby steps. i’m still learning to trust and let people in. when my former best friend broke my heart it really messed me up in a lot of ways.

11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: i love pocahontas, mulan, princess and the frog, and peter pan starring mary martin. i’ve been watching that specific peter pan since like..... birth......... and it’s still one of my favorite films.

12. FAVORITE BOOK:  dante’s divine comedy.

13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: a long-haired cat, preferably a tortoise color. i’ve always thought munchkin cats were the cutest. i’d want something that is as independent and self-sufficient as i am.
