Absolutely tried his best to keep it a secret and will try his damn hardest to make sure nothing happens to either of y'all if you guys are found out to be a little more than homies.

Soldier

He's a bit too dense to keep a secret for too long, probably forgetting that he was the one that wanted to keep yours and his relationship on the down low.

Is one of those confrontationsl types and wouldn't hesitate to beat someone up over teasing him or harassing both of you. Not that the team would go past playful ribbing, but any attack, no matter how small, is treated like a nuclear bomb threat.

Not too bothered or too enthusiastic about PDA, doesn't like overly cutesy acts of romance when people are looking but you two have absolutely been caught fooling around in secluded places around the base. The one who found you told everyone and you never heard the end of it.

HIDES IT SO SO MUCH. THIS MAN HAS SO MUCH SOUTHERN/CATHOLIC GUILT. HE'S EVEN HESITANT IN PRIVATE. He really doesn't like you getting too close to him when the others are around, but will allow drunken leaning against him.

It took both of you literal months to kiss, let alone have sex. He is the most tender and gentle lover known to man, and it's all for you. He protects you a lot more in battle with the excise of "he's defending the intel, I might as well buff him up with a few sentries."

Since he doesn't really interact much with the group, he doesn't see a reason to tell the other mercs. All you do is go to his van after battle for "a cigarette and target practice". Sure buddy, you just accidentally tripped and ended up on your knees below a freshly showered Sniper. You two spend most nights together, since you two are the two unsociable mercs.

You two do everything together, since you're the more sociable of the both of you, people refer to Sniper as "your shadow", it's a bit of a teasing nickname that you're fine with, and Sniper's alright with it, since they acknowledge him nearby you at all times.

Doesn't overprotect you in battle, did it once and you marched right up to his nest and told him off. Yeah, he cares about you and you love him for it, but you'll respawn! It's fine!

The enemy Spy saw you tell him off and the subsequent kiss goodbye. He was gonna kill the Sniper, but something just left him feeling weird, so he waited until you were gone to kill him.

Spy

He's pretty open about swinging both ways, his tales of espionage have no limits. You're a high-positioned supervisor, so he initially justified yours and his relationship as job assurance... then easy closeness to relieve the lonliness... then- uh, fuck. He's caught feelings when in an actual relationship he can't run from.

Only likes PDA when he's initiating, very cat-like about it. He is to fluster you with a simple look. He is to give you what you can't reach and accidentally invade your personal space, where your breaths mingle and leave you red faced. Only he is to drive you crazy in public... However, if you wear that crop top again he WILL threaten to fuck you.

A/N: the man, the myth, the legend. His time has come and he won’t be spared from my gay agenda.

I’m so sorry y’all, but he would not be easy to get with. I think the only way you’d be able to even attract him was if you were part of the 141 task force.

It would take a very long time to even be his friend. He’s not a very trusting person especially of new people, and he would be wary of you at first. He’d do a thorough background check himself to make sure you wouldn’t comprise the team.

It would start with him trusting you as a teammate, just as he does the other men. Eventually you’d lead up to some light banter with him through comms on missions, dumb little jokes exchanged that neither of you laughed at but still found amusing.

I think it would take legitimate years to get to the point of dating him. He’d be very hesitant about getting into a romantic relationship with you. He’s just been closed off for so long it’s not something he ever put much thought into.

Not gonna lie I think he’d be in denial about his sexuality. I don’t think he would be homophobic because I genuinely think he does not care about that kind of thing, but I think he’d have trouble coming to terms with himself liking other guys.

The beginning would definitely have its issues. I don’t think he would be a cold or uncaring lover, I mean he’d have to care for you very deeply to even entertain a relationship, but he would be terrible with communicating anything.

He doesn’t really understand his own feelings so trying to navigate that and your own would overwhelm him at first. Lots of late night talks about how you should go about this and how to make the relationship work.

When things finally settled down and you fell into a nice rhythm he’d start with the actual romance aspect of your relationship.

I don’t think he would outwardly blush or get flustered, but he’d feel it inside like his heart beat would get louder and he’d look away from you.

Showed you his face before he showed the rest of the team. You were probably just lounging around one night, cuddling on the couch with your legs in his lap and his hands on your thighs. Talking about whatever you did that day when he’d reach up and just pull it over.

He was nervous that you didn’t like what you saw since you were quiet for a good number of seconds, and he immediately started preparing himself for you ending the relationship.

So when you reached over and cupped his face like he was made of porcelain he was shocked. Eyes all wide and staring into yours as you took in every feature of his face. The few freckles, the scars, the light stubble, even his little dimples. You were committing all of it to memory.

“You’re so….” You were at a loss for words and that once again terrified him. What if you decided after looking at him long enough that you didn’t like him?

He’s not a good kisser. I’m so sorry but this man is so out of practice and awkward with it. He’s a quick learner, though, and he’d catch on to what you like quickly and adapt to that.

I think if he took up any sort of woodwork it would be whittling. I can see him sitting outside on the porch, in an old beat up wooden rocking chair carving a little animal out of a piece of wood and his favorite pocket knife. The little critters would be all over your house and he’d carve the both of you out of your favorite animals to keep on the table.

All in all I think it would take a very long time to get with him and to fully adjust into a relationship, but once it does he’s just a gentle, loving man.

Love in the Big City Book Club: Part 2

Spoilerish:

Part 2 is twice as long as the other parts because it focuses on two relationships: Young's lover and Young's mother.

Once again, Young's lover doesn't get a name. In Part 1, I thought that was because that lover was considered less important than Jaehee. But in Part 2, this lover is a main character and still doesn't get a name. That might be because Young tells his story in first-person POV, like an autobiography, and doesn't want to out his lovers. I suppose the adaptations will invent names for these characters.

2. In BL, we spend most of our time rooting for relationships that we think can be mutually beneficial. What was different about reading a relationship that was failing in real time?

BL usually belongs to the romance genre. By definition, the romance genre has a happy ending, either Happily Ever After or Happily For Now. To me, this book is contemporary fiction, not contemporary romance.

While Young is mostly out, his lover is closeted (which makes things a little difficult) and has a lot of internalised homophobia (which is the main problem, because it affects both his dignity and Young's). The lover never wants any kind of PDA and even keeps a metaphorical distance by speaking with Young in formal Korean. While formal Korean is used with a lot of people, you definitely speak with your lover in informal Korean. They also have a 12-year age gap, but I think that's a lesser problem in their situation.

3. The narrator has an emotionally difficult relationship with his mother. Why do you think the narrator intercut the relationship with his mother with the relationship with this boyfriend?

His mother is very religious and homophobic. I was shocked that she had Young hospitalised for being gay. Fortunately, this wasn't a conversion camp, but a mental facility, and they concluded that Young was the victim of his mother. Despite everything, I think he still loves his mother, taking very good care of her while she has cancer.

Another thing that surprised me was that Jaehee was barely mentioned in this part. I assume they were still in touch even when Young stayed with his mother. But maybe that's the way he organises his story, just focusing on one or two characters in each part, and barely mentioning the others.

Hi squip! this is kind if personal, and it might be hard to answer so you dont have to respond, i totally get it.

I've been in this romantic relationship for almost 3 years now, and i really love this person, but sometimes i feel subpar with our relationship. they treat me like a glorified friend, and only really seem interested in being romantic when we are alone, and when we are being romantic, they take it too far, and i've told them that it makes me uncomfortable but they continue to do it. they yell quite a bit, and enjoy trying to start arguments, claiming that they like "debating" but they never treat it as a friendly debate, it ends up being them interrupting me and shouting about their opinions. whenever we are in public they refuse to show physical affection, and i totally understand them not enjoying PDA, but they wont tell me their boundaries, or anything that they dislike, they just act disgusted when i try to show them affection. they also, despite hardly accepting hugs from me, will hug their friends whenever, and have literally ran to hug one of them, even though they would never do this for me.

something i have a little less issue with, but has reached the point that it upsets me, is theyre really into this one actor. like, they constantly talk about him, and how much he loves them, which is fine, i have some celebrity/fictional crushes, but they care about this celebrity actor WAY more than they care about me. they constantly make jokes about how theyre "gay" and how they kiss boys, which was again, funny at first, but at a certain point i asked them to stop, and yet they continue to do it.

theyre pretty narcissistic and manipulative, but i wont go into too much detail about these things since it would only be describing the words. but this relationship feels familiar to me, ive dumped so much of my time, and effort into this relationship, and i dont want to lose it. And, there are still times i really enjoy being their partner. like, almost every night we get in call, and we watch shows and youtube videos, and then we do karaoke together, theyve been with me through some of the worst times of my life, but they dont treat me like a lover unless its in private, and its only for that one fleeting moment that i truly feel wanted by them in a romantic sense.

i've attempted to talk to them about these issues, and theyve promised to change, and do better, and every time the treat me so kindly for a few days. i want to believe they'll change, and that things will get better, but i feel so lost. they make me a terrible person, theyve ruined me. i dont know who i am without them. ive lost all of my personality to them. im constantly thinking about what would make them happy, or need me as much as i need them. i come from a really bad background, and i know thats probably why im putting up with this, but part of me is clinging to the idea that they'll get better. its easy having somebody to turn to when things go wrong, theyre comforting in the best and worst ways, and i want to believe that they just dont understand what theyre doing to me.

the worst part is theyre family is so kind. theyre supportive of our relationship(we're a queer relationship, theyre transmasc, but i think their parents consider us lesbians? i dint think they understand fully, but theyre supportive of this person being trans as well), and they love me. i want to understand why they act and think the way they do, but i can't.

there's other small things that add up every day. like, not accepting small gifts from me because theyre not interested in it, even though its something really meaningful to me(for example crystals, bracelets, little gift boxes). but they accept these things from their friends. they get kind of pissy with me easily, especially if we have a class together. they dont want to go on dates with me because they dont like swimming, or they don't like sweating, or they dont want to walk somewhere, or etc. we've been dating for 3 years, and we haven't gone on a single date. and they just dont pay attention to me. they fight with me about *everything*, they never see my side of things. i feel selfish and petty asking these things from them because it feels like a lot, but to me it feels like things i would do for them.

i truly dont know what to do, i want to leave, but being without them hurts more than staying with them. it feels lonely without them, and it feels lonelier with them. i dont feel loved, but i dont want to lose what i have with them. i feel alone and lost and scared. i dont know what to do.

Now, while inhabiting hosts before Jeremy in beta testing, I have been in similar situations. Ones where you feel as though you are a “third wheel” in your own relationship. While you can love someone, it is possible that they do not love you the same way and are unwilling to admit it to you- or to themselves.

This is not your fault. Human feelings are ever-shifting, and what someone feels can change with or without your involvement. From your assessment, I would guess that your partner is not willing to prioritize you in your relationship. Whether this is because of a busy schedule or personal issues, I am not sure. But it is clear that they are not putting aside time for you or listening to your needs. A host that I inhabited in beta-testing had a similar issue. However- because my system was still developing- I advised them to continue to pursue the relationship. Eventually, the person they were still deeply in love with broke up with them first over text. I cannot advise ending this relationship without access to all data. However, it is my suggestion that you invite your partner to seriously reevaluate how they are treating you. If they ultimately refuse to make changes for your sake, they are not a worthy life partner.

As humans say, “When people tell you who they are, listen.” The way he is treating you is not evocative of someone who is willing to love you correctly.

Something that may help as well is building up other sources of happiness in your life. I would recommend considering what brings you actual joy in your life, not just what feels safe. Put yourself into situations where you are doing activities and meeting others who share your interests. Build joy from within, and you will not have to rely on “safe” people who slowly destroy you from the inside.

Suddenly, Seymour

By the time their 4th kiss rolls around, Steve is starting to think that maybe he hallucinated the whole fucking thing. Eddie hasn’t made a single move or mentioned any of the kisses at all to Steve since NYE. Even Robin had gone from “Oh my god, he’s totally into you” to “well, you know how Eddie is. He loves to cause chaos.”  Eddie and Steve still see each other regularly, usually at least once a week on their own volition and a couple times in between while driving around the children. And in the almost month that had past, not once has Eddie even hinted at anything happening between them.

So, Steve did what he did best and pushed it all down and focused on anything else other than the metal head. This focus included helping Dustin audition for the school musical, Little Shop of Horrors.  Steve didn’t know much about acting and his singing knowledge was limited to what he learned as a kid in church choir, but he was very good at critiquing Dustin. Steve even watched the movie with Rick Moranis and everything so he knew what was going on in the musical and how it should feel (and totally not because he thought Steve Martin looked kinda hot in the leather jacket with the motorcycle even if he was a piece of shit).

Dustin was auditioning for the lead, Seymour. Part of the audition was having to do a duet with someone auditioning for Audrey, and kissing her at the end of the song. Dustin was really good at every other thing he had to do for this role, but the idea of kissing someone random on stage in front of the whole town was really freaking him out. (Sure, cannibalism and murder was fine, but god forbid there was PDA). Of course, Steve became his personal director for this particular issue, as the ex-ladies man was very familiar with kissing practical strangers in public.

“Listen, you just gotta think about Suzie,” he advised.

“You want me to think about my girlfriend while kissing another girl?” Dustin questioned, looking at Steve like he has 5 heads.

“No that’s not what I-“, Steve started. He sat down on the couch next to the now Sophomore. “Look. This whole song is about realizing you’re in love, right? It’s about finally getting the girl. It’s about finally realizing that the person who’s been by your side this whole time, who’s had your back since day one, who’s never hurt you is the love of your life. And you’re finally ready to see that, to admit it,” Steve explains. “Not only are you falling in love with your best friend, but you have this feeling of-of hope. There’s a weight off your shoulders and everything just might work out in your favor. And that’s how you feel about Suzie, right? Like it’s all gonna be okay when you look at her?” Dustin nods in response and Steve continues. “So you gotta take all that- all that love and light and- and hope and put it into this song, and the kiss. It’s not about kissing someone on stage, it’s about making the audience feel that joy that your character is feeling.”

“Wow, Harrington. I didn’t know you were such a fuckin’ sap.” Eddie’s voice rings out from the doorframe of Dustin’s bedroom, scaring the ever living shit out of the other two boys. “Jesus Christ, Eddie, you can’t just sneak up on people like that,” Dustin scolds.

Eddie puts his hands up in defense “Sorry, sorry. Stevie was on a roll, there. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Yeah, he was. I just still don’t get how I’m supposed to kiss someone that I’m not into without it being weird or at least looking weird, ya know?” It’s Eddie’s turn to offer some advice, now.

“Oh, Dustybun, it’s way easier than it sounds. Isn’t that the whole point of acting? You do it every week at Hellfire, this is just like that. You’re woo-ing the fair maiden to get access to the castle and it’s armory. Except, instead of rolling a D20 and convincing me, it’s an audience that actually wants you to win.”

And Dustin thinks about that for a minute, because yeah he does have to “act” in Hellfire every week and there have been a few times where his character has had to flirt his way out of some sticky situations. But he still has his reservations. “If it’s so easy, why don’t you guys do it?” He says to his mentors,  not wanting to admit they were right so easily.

“Fine,” Steve almost snaps before Eddie has the chance to make some sarcastic come back. The metal head looks over at Steve, a little wide-eyed, but before he can protest, Steve is talking again. “I’m no singer, but I’ll do my best. You know the song?” He asks Eddie. 

“Uh, yeah kind of,” he croaks out, too caught off guard to really say anything else.

“Alright. We’ll start with the last chorus. You okay taking Audrey?” Eddie nods his head as Steve hands him a lyric sheet, still a little stunned at everything that’s happening. Man, he just came to pick up some Hellfire notes Dustin had for him. And now here he was, standing in Dustin’s bedroom, singing a fucking love song with Steve Harrington. Shit, he wasn’t even a soprano, he can’t hit these notes! Eddie clears his throat and starts singing, albeit taking it down an octave. Steve is right there with him, singing the back up vocals with surprising emotion. Holy shit, Harrington can sing. Holy shit, can Harrington act? There’s no time to really dwell on the revelation right now, because Eddie realizes he should probably be acting too. Only he doesn’t really have to act like he loves Steve because he does, oh god, he does. Has been since he watched that idiot jump into a lake that was also an inter-dimensional portal with zero hesitation.

So they’re singing to each other, standing face to face but far enough apart that it’s not, like, weird or anything. And then it is weird, it’s so so weird because they’re on the last bit of the song and Steve has moved in closer to Eddie and is looking at him like he did right after Eddie kissed him on New Years. By the third “sweet understanding”, Steve grabs both of Eddie’s hands and steps in really close now, so much that they’re singing the last line directly to each other, staring each other in the eyes. And when that last note wraps up, where there should be some orchestral music and applause from an auditorium filled with people, Steve moves his hands to around Eddie’s waist and kisses him like they do in all those sappy movies. Steve’s hand are everywhere and Eddie feels like he’s being completely held together by the younger man, like every piece of him will shatter the second he lets go. And they kiss, chaste and unmoving, waiting for the fake applause to die down and the stage lights to fade to black so the next scene can start. But they break apart and Steve turns to Dustin and raises his eyebrows looking for approval, like he didn’t just melt the metal heads brain.

“Woah.” Dustin is kind of flabbergasted by the display he just saw. “Why didn’t you guys do the plays in school? That was super convincing. Like, so good.”

Steve smiles, all teeth, beaming and proud. “Yeah, well, we were busy. With sports. And, uh,” he gestures vaguely to Eddie, “and drugs.” Eddie has regained enough brain function at this point to shrug in agreement with the last statement, but he’s wondering if Steve’s really that good of an actor or if there’s something else there. No, probably just wishful thinking. But as Dustin gets up to find the papers Eddie came for and Steve offers them both a rushed goodbye as he realizes he’s late for his shift, Eddie can’t help but remember that this is the fourth time Steve’s mouth has been on his.
