Fish and Chips’ Surprising Jewish History. Jamie Oliver confirmed it!

You may be surprised to learn that fish and chips, though wildly popular in England for what seems like eternity, was actually a specialty of the Portuguese Sephardic Jews who fled the Inquisition in the 16th century and found refuge in the British Isles. Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver referred to this recently in an article in the New York Times, adding that, “Dishes evolve, impacted by trade, war, famine and a hundred other forces.”

Among those “other forces” are dishes born of religious ritual. For observant Jews, fish is pareve, a neutral food in kosher terms, thus an easy way to avoid treyf (non-kosher food) and possibly include dairy in the same meal. It was especially important for Marranos, the so-called crypto-Jews, who pretended to be Christian during the Inquisition. They ate fish on Fridays, when meat was forbidden by the Church, and also saved some to eat cold the next day at lunch, to avoid cooking on Shabbat.

Frying was natural for Jewish home cooks — think of latkes and sufganyiot — and as the Jewish community began to flourish in England, it spurred a taste for its beloved fried, battered fish throughout the country. According to Claudia Roden’s The Book of Jewish Food, Thomas Jefferson tried some on a trip to London and noted that he ate “fish in the Jewish fashion” during his visit. Alexis Soyer, a French cook who became a celebrated chef in Victorian England included a recipe for “Fried Fish, Jewish Fashion” in the first edition of his cookbook A Shilling Cookery for the People (1845). Soyer’s recipe notes that the “Jewish manner” includes using oil rather than meat fat (presumably lard), which made the dish taste better, though also made it more expensive.

There’s some dispute about the where and when of “chips” (what we Americans call French fries and the French call pommes frites). Many historians say that deep-fried, cut-up potatoes were invented in Belgium and, in fact, substituted for the fish during hard times. The first time the word “chips” was used was in Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities in 1859: “husky chips of potato, fried with some reluctant drops of oil.”

The official pairing of fish and chips didn’t happen until a few years later, though. Although there are some who dispute it, most authorities say that it is thanks to a Jewish cook, this time a young Ashkenazi immigrant named Joseph Malin, who opened the first British chippy, AKA fish and chip shop, in London in 1863. The shop was so successful it remained in business until the 1970s.

Who could foresee that fearful Jewish immigrants hiding their true religion and practicing in secret would be responsible for creating one of the most iconic dishes in the U.K.? The down-home dish that Winston Churchill claimed help the British defeat the Nazis, the comfort food that George Orwell said helped keep the masses happy and “averted revolution.” The dish, by the way, that was among the only foods never rationed during wartime because the British government believed that preserving access to it was a way of keeping up morale. A dish that continues to be a mainstay of the British diet.

Think about that the next time you find yourself feasting on this centuries-old — Jewish? British? — recipe.

These days, some restaurants are putting a new spin on fish and chips. Almond crusted. Baked instead of fried. Quinoa coated. Sweet potato fries instead of regular. And those are all fine; as Oliver says, “Dishes evolve.” But plain old fish and chips endures and probably always will. Good recipes usually do.

Have some of my utmv headcannons

Dreamtale is, in universe, called ‘The Tale of Emotions’. Over time, however, It got ‘Killertale’d. This upsets both twins, but there’s an infinite number of au’s with an infinite number of people. Everyone close to the twins, however, calls it the correct name.

While everyone in the multiverse went from calling it ‘The Tale of Emotions’ to ‘Dreamtale’, Ink originally called it ‘Dreamtale’, because that’s what the creators called it. He switched after realizing how upset it made Dream.

After leaving his AU, goopy 6 year old Nightmare wanted to establish himself as the scariest, most dangerous threat in the multiverse. So he followed around Error, the most dangerous threat in the multiverse. Error had a dad arc.

Ink and Error are best friends.

Error’s goal to destroy the multiverse is impossible (that’s canon, I just think it’s really cool). It’s a sunk cost fallacy, which is when you invest so much into something, you can’t stop, or else why for you waste so much?

Ink knows that too. He’ll sometimes fight Error if the au is pretty new, and because he knows their fights inspire creators. Most of the time, however, he leaves Error be. After all, who are they to intrude on Error’s story?

Most AUs fall because they’ve been forgotten. They crumble like a dry, dead leaf, which is when Core Frisk gets monsters out and into the Omega Timeline.

When a creator destroys their own AU, everyone in universe forgets that the AU existed in the first place, Gaster style. The only ones that remember are Ink and Error because they’re both connected to the creators. (For example, Fell knows he’s missing a drinking buddy, but only Ink and Error know that was Flowerfell Sans, or anything about Flowerfell in the first place)

Error and Ink are both Aroace.

The multiverse just… pops shipkids into existence. Most of the time, the parents aren’t even together. (Fr though, why are all ship kid’s origins that their parents are terrible and abusive? I thought we all liked these funky skeletons?)

Ink loves the shipkids. He views them as precious gifts from the creators and takes very good care of them. He’s almost the multiverse’s CPS. Any and all of his kids are absolutely and undeniably loved.

All the Swap universe Sanses know eachother. They take turns having a training day/movie night sleepover in the others AU’s and consider each other cousins.

Blueberry is Swap’s kid.

The Fell brothers are friends with Dust and Horror. They want to fight Horrortale Undyne so bad. They had to be stopped multiple times.

Classic, Red, Swap, and Horror because a friend group after Swap and Horror had began fighting with/for Dream and Nightmare. It was awkward at first, but Swap was determined to make Horror his friend.

Ink didn’t really have a house until he met Dream. When the 6 year old broke out of stone, Ink brought him to his Dad’s house for a few days while he made a home in the doodleshpere for them. Ink had his first father arc of many.

Geno, Error, Fatal Error, and Fresh are siblings.

Geno and Dream friendship my beloved.

Geno has been asked to babysit both Dream and Nightmare at the same time before. It was always very awkward, but no fights broke out (thankfully).

Outer is the youngest Sans. (In the og Undertale, they say all kids wear stripes, and Outertale Sans does wear stripes.) He’s still an adult, and the big brother, he’s just a little bit younger than most other Sanses.

Whether or not an AU has the events of Undertale Yellow is it’s past is entirely random. Most things that happen before Frisk falls down are.

Ink has the ability to look at other multiverses. He just dislikes doing it because other Ink’s unsettle him a bit. He did once, however, because Dream asked him if he and his brother were destined to fight in every universe. Ink chose not to answer.

Despite their being an infinite number of Underswaps, everyone knows the same Swap. Blueberry has, like, a hundred babysitters.

There are a few bittybones aus. Ink has a very firm stance that no one touches them because so many creators go into bitty aus/interact directly with them.

Every story that involves the outcodes on a non multiverse scale is its own AU within the multiverse. (For example, Seabound Souls is it’s own AU, as it’s not on a multiversal scale)

The end of the multiverse is kind of like far lands in Minecraft. It’s a wall with many large, traversable holes in it. The reason people don’t tend to go into other multiverses is just how big of a distance any AU is to the multiverse boarder. If someone did manage to go that distance, however, nothing really stops them from going into another multiverse.

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, I’m glad all of you enjoyed the story despite my art not being that good. I actually wanted to draw for 250 followers but I didn’t realised we passed that milestone. 

Anyways! To celebrate, I wanted to share some concepts regarding the Player based on my memories, though sorry if there is like a black blotched in the drawing as that is considered as spoilers.

To start off, I began creating this AU maybe 5/6 years ago, on and off, (re-writing or removing some stuff along the way) I had loads of concept art and drawings back in 2019 but sadly those old arts were, ummm, forcedly deleted after a disagreement with someone I trusted, haha. The pain for a FT user in ibis paint. ｡ﾟ(TヮT)ﾟ

Then 2023, I wanted to move forward. So I decided to give it a shot and start drawing again. I wanted to share my AU (better late than ever),＼＼\(۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶//／／ and also I thought it will help overcome my fear of drawing and start liking to draw again.

Anyway, here we have Player’s design concept (+ explanation):

Version 1:

Player actually does not inhibit Frisk’s body, as they are not trap in the game, instead, they have their own “Avatar” basing on the data and sprites of Frisk and Chara. (The situation is more towards VR? AR? I’m not sure what to call it) The Player has their memories intact.

The story is just Player goofing around in Undertale, until plot happens, but I didn’t really like the idea as I have no clue how to progress the story forward, so the whole story was re-written.

Player mostly hack codes, while Frisk has the Reset/Reload button.

Initially, their eyes didn’t change colour when using abilities. But I wanted to distinguish what and when the abilities are used.

Version 2:

This is where, I decided that the Player actually inhibits Frisk body, though they are not amnesiac. Frisk is like a ghost (narrator?) here. The image above is post-skip version to maybe 1 year trapped in Undertale. This idea was scrap and rewritten due “Chara” ‘s story and I wanted to involved Gaster in the story. (Also, because I didn’t want to draw this version hairstyle anymore, hahaha (  ≧ᗜ≦))

Player has both the hacking and reset/reload abilities.

This version of Player is more uptight and serious.

Version 3:

I think this is like 2nd or 3rd version of the finalise concept. 

Our current Player. I made the hairstyle simpler.

This Player inhibits Frisk body and is amnesiac. The personality shifted so it’s easier for the player to act consistent. This version is more carefree than ver 2, they are similar to ver 1.

First design of the Player (ver 3).

Despite being ver 3, I wanted to keep a bit of the ver 1 and 2 hairstyle but decided not to. Again, I wanted a simpler hairstyle.

This personality is just them being stress and filled with anxiety. A nervous wreck and a crybaby. Cries a lot at the first arc until they pull themselves together. But I didn’t wanna make them cry all throughout the story, if I continued to write them like that, I might ended up smacking Player myself hahaha. I ended up toning down the personality. 

Gaster would have replace Frisk as the ghost (narrator?). But I decided not doing it, because it conflict with the plot. That, and the story would be over much quicker with him around.

Side note: I had to change the relationship between Sans and the Player(hate, confuse, no interaction, chill, idk? etc), a lot of times, but in the end I decided to make him not trust the Player. 

Previously in most iteration, he just hates Player.  I planned to have him to kill the Player the first time they exited the ruins, but decided to go against it as it doesn’t really fit his style. Also, the story would go very differently if he did commit to it. Maybe one day I can make him kill them. In an alternate timeline maybe. ꉂ (´∀｀)ʱªʱªʱª

Extras: Player in different outfits (loosely)based on the other fallen humans in this AU. (+ ruin outfit)

There is a reason, why the Player had worn some of these outfits in chapter 3 and 4. 

Don’t worry, it’s not originally the clothes worn by the other children, Toriel made them. She has spares. (Sorry, to the one that find it creepy, when it was first shown, hahahaha)

What messed up things did Toxin do to their AUs respectively?

Ooooo.

Warning: Famine, death, etc.

My Old Undertale AU: Toxin found the AU and decided it was far too peaceful, so he decided to send machines that, at first, seemed harmless, but then they started killing and deconstructing. Rain and Conroy lost all of their loved ones because of him and Conroy lost his family because of Toxin. He wants to stop the pain Toxin causes to other AUs.

My Old Underswap AU: A moderately peaceful AU before Toxin messed with the code enough that the Chara of the AU became murderous and killed the people in the AU over and over before Toxin sent his machines to help make it even more painful. This caused a constant cycle of resets and deaths that Honeycomb managed to escape before he could escape with Aquamarine. He knew the AU was messed with and he wanted to make Toxin pay for making his loved ones suffer the way he did.

My Old Underfell AU: The AU dealt with genuine unrest, but Toxin took on a more hands-on approach by manipulating people into fighting before he added his robots into the mix and, unlike Horrortale, he did not erase Frisk's ability to reset so every time they died, they'd relive the damage he caused every time. Passerine and Heath escape but they remember what Toxin did, they remember all the loved ones they lost, and they want to stop him.

My Old Swapfell AU: They had a moderately peaceful AU, albeit with a lot of subtle unrest because of humans. However, Toxin took advantage of it and, like Underfell, caused unrest, manipulating circumstances to his advantage, adding the disastrous robots he created into the mix, and thus, the world was stuck in a similar situation to Underfell. Finn and Zirconium escape and they're intent on stopping Toxin like how Passerine and Heath are, to avenge those they've lost and they want to stop him.

My Old Fellswap AU: Like Swapfell, it was a moderately peaceful AU with subtle unrest because of humans. Toxin came in, decided to fuck around in it, mess up the code, cause a war, send his mechanical creatures... Killed their loved ones and they die over and over again as the world resets and everyone dies again and again without mercy hoping to break their wills, but they hold on to hope. Noir and Bear want revenge and they want Toxin to pay for what he did.

My Old Horrortale AU: They were like the Tale AU at the beginning, peaceful, unsuspecting, and prime for targeting. The difference being he had taken away the ability of reset from the Frisk of the AU and killed them very early into the war. They were put into a famine and they lost countless loved ones because of it. Eventually, Storm and Carollan escaped and they started to fight against Toxin.

Hey there. My name's Sansy or Bumble. If you don’t know me for my Undertale AUs, that’s alright. I’ll give you some insight into what most of them are all about since I rarely bring them up on here or Tiktok.

But first things first! These are my creative ideas for these AUs, and I’m more keen to keep them on the down low because some people are… totally not cool. They sure can be real freaks and certainly not in a good way. >:( But I do wish to share about them just cause, well, I love them a whole bunch!

Apologies for the ramble, now let me go down my rabbit hole in 3 of the Undertale AUs I have.

Lost Soul.

Basically, this story is about a human losing their body after removing their soul just to stop the pain they have experienced while in the underground. To have temporary relief if you will. However, this action proves to be a massive mistake when the body and soul scatter. With some pleas of help soon after, only one monster was around to hear the child's call. A tall skeleton who was initially excited to capture a human to get into the royal guard, but now begins to have a change in tune. And once Toriel hears word of this by the man behind the door? She soon joins Papyrus in helping the human get their soul back into their body that has been walking around aimlessly. Searching for their other half all within the underground alone.

Meanwhile, on a different end, once other monsters hear of a human soul floating around within the underground? The royal guards are now sent on a mission to get that last soul. Once this soul is retrieved, the monsters will at last will be able to go to the surface and wage war on the humans who imprisoned them.

But no one should want this. So the human MUST get their soul back into their body. And soon! However, with the help of a kind natured skeleton and the previous queen of the underground, they can surely achieve this goal. And maybe change a few fellow monster souls to help them along the way and set a new peaceful path.

Newfound Family.

In this case, it's more to tell the tale of Frisk's life as a teen. And in all their life thus far, they have been cared & raised by two loving skeleton brothers, a skeleton father, goat monsters, and... Oh my... This child has a big family that loves them dearly, actually!

But what seems to go array in their teens is when a boy named Vance begins to harass and push them. And when Frisk pushed back, let's just say Vance was not happy with this response and vowed to put Frisk down. Dedicated to ruining whatever made Frisk happy.

He's a very awful person and one Frisk wished they never encountered.

See No Evil (aka: TerrorTale).

Essentially, with this one, it all goes back to the war between humans and monsters. And the battleground that served as all sides graves. However, with the battle being bitter and horrid on all fronts, the soil of this land could be best described as tainted & cursed.

What made this bad is that the dark murky magic that was used in those times began to seep down to the underground. Bringing to life a new threat that was far more than just lethal. Coming from above, these kinds of beasts made of old blood and soil would appear and feast on all kinds of souls. Monsters and humans, if they were present.

And unfortunately for the human, who just left the previous safety of The Ruins? They, along with the whole underground, will be under attack. Experiencing the terror and price of what the past has done for all living beings. It's a really bad bag, but there is hope! The beasts fear and die by fire magic. So, for the underground sake, it's best to repel the beasts with flames and stay indoors. Store food and keep the light burning bright and strong around you!

Most importantly, protect all friends, family, and neighbors. Because at this time, this sense of love and community really matters at this time. But believe me when I tell you that the human who is being cared for in Snowdin now has a desire to free monsters. How they intend to do it is a bit up in the air. And it may prove difficult as they have suffered many injuries.

Rest assured, the taste of freedom is in every monsters mind. And one way or another, they all will get that chance. It just takes some hope and determination to pull this off.

Well, with this all said and done I can say that this is what I have. I’ve been working on what I wanted out of these AUs and I know there’s a ton to discuss and draw ofc. But in all honesty, I just really want to make it so people can actually get to know the basics of what’s happening in each world. And just to nail the point across:

Newfound Family centers around Frisk and teens their age in this new chapter of their life

Lost Soul centers around Frisk “the human”, Papyrus, and Toriel

And TerrorTale centers around the monsters who protect the human

In all, there’s always going to be mention of most of the characters. Not just necessarily a singular character. But yeah, that’s my big thing I’ve been trying to write out

okay, but

multiethnic aus & aus from different cultures are my FAVORITE.

UT as it is now is only one bundle of myths and one manner of dressage. All that can be transformed! There are similar myths on ither continents and in many, many cultures.

Give me new languages, new clothes;

what if the Underground was under India instead, in East India, where two siblings dodge their villages' Durga puja and discover a gaping hole in the old mandir's ruins?

What if the ruins of the mandir topple in to show them the way, as if Maa Durga Herself decided Monsterkind no longer needed her protections, and opened the way for the sibling's pure hearts? (if you take up this idea i humbly request the boy be named Raam and don't forget the little bell anklets for the little lady ❤️❤️❤️)

Toriel in saree. Bet y'all sacrums that Papyrus ABSOLUTELY would drop us ALL DEAD by carrying Bharatanatyam styles with so much energy!! Undyne would look so FIERCE, not integrating martial arts would be criminal. I would feel compelled to give her Maa Durga iconography. All of Sans' attire are prestitched...yes, even the lungi. Even the lungi is prestitched. Alphys is trying her best but the pallu is always wrinkly and uneven, so the kids help her out with dailywear tricks they've watched their Dida do hundreds of times.

Or Pacific Islander. Dead volcanos leave bubbles deep inside the earth. The beating of the sea above creates white noise.

Or a pit drops out from beneath a hilltop fort in the Welsh dells. The people still speak in the old way and look frightened when you speak of the Romans and Human Tribes both, but they don't know if the Romans ever came. Go back further if you like, way further, to when the petrified trees in the Irish Sea were tall and green!

...Or use a totally different mythic inspiration!

A treasure-hunter seeks the jewels of an ancient king, said to have cleansed the land of evils and made a fortune on the way, which he had hidden to remove the demon of temptation from the good people. Except, his treasurehide was the Underground -- and if he tries to remove even a single "piece," the entry collapses. He'll need all his wits and purity of heart.

Tales of the local Folk Catholics turn out to be... not all that wrong. There IS a Hell-portal out there. And, if they didn't put it there, someone else sure did. Even worse... there's real people down there; ...and the last thing either party remembers is the destruction of Asriel and Chara. Niche Folk tales can come forward and sensationalized tropes can step backwards.

Or, something far removed from myth entirely -- magical peoples condemned in a world that will no longer understand them.

A subterranean geologist visits a friend and notices a landmark on a map that isn't there now. They know that, because they're visiting the region for work soon. There's the decision to rappel in and see what was so noteworthy...but what they both didn't anticipate was wicked magic. The Barrier snaps a perfectly good, new repel line like butter once they're inside its maw. Inside, a humble people are being devastated by earthquakes and their civil engineers need a hand. They can only see a limited perspective of the region. But, now it's political -- an adult problem for an adult specialist.

They're alternate universes.

Let's make them OURS. I feel like that's something Toby would want, comparing Undertale and Deltarune.

Ok, so.

I don't exactly know what I'm doing, this is the first time I post something on Tumblr, but anyway.

I want to present you an AU of Undertale that has been on my mind for a while, and here I intend to write the main things about it.

Practically, in this AU Frisk is an actual person, a separated entity from the Player that got themselves possessed by it. Kinda like Kris in Deltarune, yes. The difference between the two of them is that Frisk can't just extract their soul by force and so they're stuck in their own body, controlled by a superior entity (PLAYER). Frisk desperately wants to be freed, but when the Player inserts a command in the code of the game, plays yet another Pacifist run (of the many runs they already did) and fights Asriel, Frisk will learn that said freedom comes at the cost of their soul. During the last attack their soul literally breaks, despite it being impossible normally, and their code gets erased. Since they are a determination soul though, and determination can break the game, all the determination they produce gets condensed and forms a new body for them, so now they are a soulless, codeless and unstable entity that goes around risking an explosion of raw power at any moment. In all this mess, Chara gets fused with Frisk's conscience too, so now they are like one different entity from both Frisk and Chara. Meanwhile, in the "real world" the Player changes computer (because their old one crashed in the battle) and reopens their Undertale files. This causes the game to try and execute a True Reset, without much success since now nobody remembers anything, but the barrier is broken and Frisk's/Chara's situation is the same.

This is all the background you need to know to understand the general idea. I'm still working on the full-length story, it's on Quotev and I intend to post it on Wattpad too under the name of Soulless!tale. It's not yet finished, and I wrote down only a couple of chapters, so don't be mad at me. This is the first time I write something for someone to read, and I'm not American nor British, so forgive me if my english is bad.

This is all I wanted to say. I'm sorry if my rambling annoyed you, and I hope you will find my story amusing.

this right here is seraphim and pirenthem, undertale sans and papyrus in my dragon au! i decided i'm going to handle my lore dumps on these in pairs, so! lore and unshaded versions beneath the cut 💙

sans, or seraphim, has the ability to disguise himself in a humanoid form. in his case, a satyr, as it feels much more comfortable to shift into something that keeps aspects of his draconic self (i.e. his horns and ears). in his satyr form, he's your stereotypical bard. he's always traveling around to human taverns and bars, occasionally finding "company" for the night, and always singing songs to entertain the populace with legendary tales of mighty heroes and vicious beasts. although... his audience would die of shock if they knew just how many of these tales are true. he's lived them all in the many aeons of his life. he's lived every life one could imagine, amassing the largest hoards of the prettiest gold and jewels, ruling many a kingdom as both gentle giant and cruel tyrant, exploring every expanse this world has to offer. as such, he has no interest in hoards or ruling or... much of anything anymore, he's seen it all a thousand times before. now all he has left is to ensure his "brother's" happiness, and to share the stories of his life with any and all willing to listen. yes, that's right. "brother" in quotation marks. seraphim and pirenthem are not related by blood, or, if they are, it's by pure coincidence. one day, seraphim happened upon an abandoned hatchling, barely a few days old, its eyes not even open yet. he was crying for his parents, and seraphim knew they would not return for the little one. he also knew the hatchling would not survive without them, so he took the hatchling with him and raised it. he never quite felt comfortable being a parental figure though, and instead took on a brotherly role. thus explaining seraphim's fierce protectiveness of pirenthem; he will always remember him as that small abandoned hatchling. he knows that pain a little too well, even though those scars are long since faded. if pirenthem is aware that they're aren't related by blood, the two have never spoken about it. likely due to pirenthem's abandonment as a hatchling and him never having exactly parental figures, he has a desperate craving for validation. he wants people to adore him, to want to be around him. of course he loves his brother and appreciates his support, but it's just... not the same. he also has a misguided perception; he believes if he gathers a large hoard, people will love him, and shower him with affection. he does not realize, however, that dragons gather hoards almost exclusively by taking from humans, and are feared and hated by said humans because of this. seraphim doesn't have the heart to tell him this. perhaps one day pirenthem will meet a kind-hearted human that will see past their differences, and love him all the more for his kind, exuberant nature. and perhaps one day seraphim will meet someone that can revitalize his love for the world around him, that will see past the mask of a joyful, easygoing bard, and soothe weary pains buried so deep within his soul he forgets they're even there.
