But long before Mary, those same garlands were made as offerings to other goddesses by many other names.

Roses were offered to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and fertility, whose emblem was also a circle with a cross pendant.

Before that, they were offered to Isis, the Great Mother of the ancient Mediterranean world.

In Egyptian images created thousands of years before the Gospels, Isis holds an ankh, the hieroglyph for Life and a variation on the same familiar symbol—an oval with a cross dangling from it that looks exactly like a rosary.

The first mention of a rosary-like devotion is over five thousand years old and refers to ajapamala, which in Sanskrit means “muttering garland.”

Like the word rosary, mala originally referred not to a circle of beads but to a sacred circle of flowers.

Early on, men and women simply wove their chaplets of roses for the Goddess. Later, they entwined prayers and mantras with those flowers, eventually stringing beads into a circle to perform the same symbolic gesture.

The current form of the rosary emerged in the Middle Ages as Christianity extended its dominion across pagan Europe. In this way the rosary became a kind of church within the Church. Old statues of Isis nursing her baby, Horus, were refashioned as images of the Madonna and Jesus.

The rosary was a way of grafting devotion to the Virgin onto the rootstock of far older, more Earth-centered forms of goddess worship handed down from prehistoric times.

Buried in the soil of those areas of Europe where the rosary first flourished have been found hundreds of devotional figurines of the goddess that are tens of thousands of years old. Long before people recorded their histories in written records, long before they settled down to live in towns and cities, they trusted the guidance and wisdom of a Lady whose body they identified with the fertile soil beneath their feet. The way you give us amazing quotes and monthly (personal favourite) summaries, is one of the things that keep me here, on tumblr.

I can’t tell you the number of books I purchased because of your posts (Solnit’s Orwell’s Roses ending up being one of my all time favourites and latest Popova’s Figuring being one of best reads of the year…)

And at the same time I’d love to ask you about your approach to skin care routine. What were the best lessons you’ve learned about looking after your skin so far? Did you find a perfect lip balm?

This has been in my inbox since October - my apologies, life has been life-ing, but I'm getting this house in order before the new year.

Would I be able to pick 10? Probably not, too little. I'd categorise them by Non-Fiction (sciences exc. social sciences), Non-Fiction (all other), and Fiction as I did here. And I might add a special category for neuro. related books. I answered that ask in November 2021, since then I would probably add: The Act of Living by Frank Tallis, Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, Orwell's Roses by Rebecca Solnit, Metaphysical Animals by Clare Mac Cumhaill & Rachel Wiseman, and A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers.

I'm so glad you loved Orwell's Roses, it's become one of my all time favourites too. I think it flew under the radar a little, I don't see it talked about often.

The best lessons I've learned about looking after my skin so far: more/stronger is not always better, evidence-based is always better, and without a good SPF everything else is pointless.

The hunt for the perfect lip balm post-discontinuation of Dior's Creme de Rose is ongoing. I tried the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm first, and my controversial and unpopular opinion is I hated it. I normally love the smell of vanilla but it was far too full-on and artificial, and way too sticky even as an overnight balm. I've now got several others on the go: the La Bouche Rogue White Balm which I like as a day lip balm, but it's not wowed me so I won't be repurchasing, along with their night serum and lip scrub - I will be repurchasing the scrub, I will not be repurchasing the serum, the balm alone is better; the Tatcha Kissu Lip Mask which does the job, but I won't be repurchasing, it holds in whatever moisture is below but it's not moisturising in itself; the Serge Lutens Lip Comfort which I think will become by day to day lip balm, it's very small/easy to transport, and is exactly the right amount of balm under lipstick; and I went insane before Christmas and tried the La Mer Lip Balm, unfortunately for my bank balance it might actually be the best lip balm of all time. I had severely winter chapped lips and it was a one application and fixed situation. I usually hate anything minty but I will overlook it, it's that good.

🌹 : From the moment Dream sits beside Techno, it’s clear he’s after something. He stares expectantly, waiting for his rival to lower xyr book. It takes a moment — he doesn’t clear his throat like he usually does to get their attention. Instead, he is patient, only presenting the black rose when Techno glances up. He doesn’t say anything, either; just gives a little nod. Normally, these flowers symbolize death, but Dream trusts xe to know more than that. In Ancient Greece and Rome, they used to represent strength and power. Fitting, in his eyes, for someone deserving of his respect.

Feeling the presence of the man destined as xyr rival, the man whose fate had been written long before stars could twinkle, Techno simply continued reading. Reading and reading until sparing Dream a single glance. Questioning, and possibly curious, why he was lingering around. It wasn't until a singular black rose was presented. Dreams careful gaze held Techno's and Achilles marked the book before taking the rose carefully. The book was on the table and Achilles soon enough placed the rose behind xyr ear.

"How do I look? Does black suit me?" Whilst the tone wasn't clear, Dream could note the small smile creeping along their face. Pink hair was in a messy bun and dressed like a prince.

Techno appreciated the thought. Black may mean death but the true symbolism behind it spoke a thousand words, it would talk more about their rivalry and friendship, how equal they were against one another. Achilles respected Dream and never would xe allow him to think otherwise. For xe knows the rode he is to give Dream, when they next officially hang out outside of university times, alone together. Achilles will bless Dream with the peach coloured rose carefully cherished and treasured for how it symbolized the friendship and rivalry perfectly.

What is it about roses that makes us associate them with the Divine Feminine? Why, for five thousand years, and probably a lot longer, have we gathered these delicate, aromatic flowers as an offering for the Mother Goddess in spring?

Roses are very old. Fossils of five-petaled roses have been found in the archaeological record from 35 million years ago—which means they were already there long before hominids evolved.

Before angiosperms, there were no plants rich enough in nutrients to feed the bodies of larger warm-blooded animals.

Angiosperms led to an explosion of biodiversity—and an explosion of color—into our world. Flowers were good at enticing the senses of the animals and insects who helped to pollinate them and, if they ate them, also helped to disperse their seeds.

The bright colors and distinctive shapes of flowers made them especially compelling. Flowers got noticed. They stood out. Angiosperms evolved alongside the animals who interacted most intensively with them and, as this happened, in certain cases a kind of evolutionary love story began to unfold.

Roses were the first cultivated flowers, but it’s never been entirely clear why. Whatever can be said for the medicinal properties of rose hips or rose water, there is no accounting for the sheer number of gardens devoted to the rose.

How did roses so thoroughly romance the Western imagination that it became devoted to this flower above all others—in art, philosophy, literature, and even prayer?

How did roses become the quintessential symbols of both spiritual and romantic love?

Some have said that the five petals of the first cultivated roses mirrored the five fingers of the human hand—that, because of that shape, early humans were already half in love with the rose.

But if we loved roses enough to cultivate them in great number, roses seem to have also loved us in return. Plants and animals evolved together.

They became what they are not because of qualities intrinsic to their nature but because of how they responded to and interacted with one another. If humans planted roses because roses were beautiful, roses taught humans what beauty is.

Possibly, roses taught humans what love is. That, finally, is the only explanation for why we offered roses to the Mother Goddess in spring—and why we pray the rosary today.

We are in love. We have always been in love. What more is there to know?
