here is a thing that might be closer to finished than the last thing. like there's an actual chance i'll finish it this week.

i was talking to someone about how hard it would be to make an arranged marriage trope work within canon (or semi-canon whatever) and then immediately thought of three different scenarios, because there is something wrong in my brain:

klaus is an evil genius (but katherine is worse)

witches made them do it

caroline arranges her own arranged marriage

this is an excerpt from the first one, which involves damon's terrible negotiating skills, hgtv, a triple fake-out, katherine being a stone cold badass, and elijah getting everything he wants for once in his longass life. klaus and caroline are there, too, i guess.

(shoutout to @stars-and-darkness for making fake relationship work in ad aeternam and doing it so, so well. it's a total delight, and now i want to do an entire series of trying to make the most humany tropes work with canon klaroline.)

Caroline didn’t particularly want to have a confrontation in fuzzy socks, flannel Hello Kitty jammies, and the oversized NSYNC Christmas album hoodie her dad sent the first holiday he didn’t bother showing up. Shows what he knew, anyway. Caroline was always more of a Spice Girls girl.

At least she’d already washed off the moisturizing mask and her nails were dry. Evergreen. She smiled to herself, wiggling her nails out in front of her, admiring them. She always wore evergreen after Thanksgiving to nudge herself into the spirit of the season.

What was not getting her into the spirit was the continued knocking on her front door. Caroline didn’t know with complete confidence who was at the door, but anyone likely to knock on her door in the middle of the night was not someone she wanted to speak to right now. But it kept going on and on and on, even though she was trying to watch an episode of House Hunters International, and it was really starting to distract her from being judgmental about the viability of this couple’s relationship.

She slid down the hall on slippery socked feet, nearly flattening herself on the wall taking the corner, and opened the front door with far more gravitas than a teenager in pigtails should need to possess. It was, unfortunately, none of the people she most wanted to verbally eviscerate.

Caroline had never met Elijah Mikaelson, was just sort of in his general orbit way more than she wanted to be, and had counted herself lucky that she’d only had to navigate the whims and tantrums of two of the siblings, but he’d struck her as the least adept at adapting to modern life. Wild, since from the gossip she always heard bazillionth hand from Bonnie or Elena, Finn had been vacationing in Daggerville since the turn of the previous millennium. But the times Caroline had observed Elijah, he’d seemed like he was always a moment away from saying something campy in a Transylvanian accent. Even now on her front steps, he looked like he was waiting for an ominous fog to roll in. Crack of thunder. Bolt of lightning. Howling wind. That sort of thing.

His brother, on the other hand, was a smirky butthead who still didn’t know better than to try to buy a person. As much as she would have liked to maintain an air of regal imperiousness, she had to cross her arms over her chest to keep herself from strangling the smug out of him.

“Thanks for stopping by, fellas, but we already have the latest issue of The Watchtower.”

Next to Elijah’s bespoke tailoring, Klaus looked like the well-crafted casual epitome of the black sheep brother in shades of dark gray with a black leather jacket and boots. He, of course, completely ignored her sarcastic greeting.

“Hello, Caroline. How lovely to have you back in town. Obviously, there are a few…,” Klaus paused for pleased effect, the dramatic asshole. “…recent developments to discuss.”

“It’s late.”

“It’s barely ten,” he replied, incredulous.

“Klaus. I mean this from the very bottom of my soul: seriously!?” Caroline uncoiled her arms and flung them out wide. “I leave for a week to visit colleges with my mom—”

“Only one in Virginia. One might think you were trying to run away, sweetheart.”

Caroline wondered if this was what it felt like to lose her mind.

“UVA is my safety school,” she snapped. “Everyone applies to a school in state in case they aren’t accepted anywhere else or the financial packages aren’t good enough. Which in my case will not be happening, but it’s what people do.”

“Miss Forbes,” Elijah broke in, trying to cut off the ongoing escalation of her outrage.

Caroline didn’t bother breaking her stare-down with Klaus. “Elijah, I’m sure you’re really a pleasant person once someone gets to know you, but if you wouldn’t mind terribly, I have to yell at your brother, now.”

Elijah’s stunned silence was probably as much permission as she was going to get.

“I go away for a week and I can tell you what I should have come back to. Girls’ night with my best friends. That is not at all my reality, though, because instead, you were here negotiating a bride price for me from Damon freaking Salvatore of all people, and now I have to spend my Saturday night at home, watching people in terrible marriages shop for vacation properties, because I’m mad at everyone I know except my mom, Matt, and weirdly enough, Rebekah, because she called you a wanker, and for the first time ever, I am in total agreement with her.”

Klaus clasped his hands behind him and leaned forward, past where her home's barrier against him should have been, further into Caroline’s personal space than she would prefer. Being in the same hemisphere as Klaus was too close, as far as she was concerned. “Already bonding with your new sister-to-be?”

Caroline raised clawed hands to throat level and shook them at him before placing her fingertips on his unfortunately amazing feeling chest and gently moving him away from her. “You are the oldest old man and totally sack of cats crazy.”

Klaus allowed it, shrugged, unconcerned, and titled his head to his blessedly unobtrusive brother. “Technically, he’s an older old man. As is Finn.”

“I’m so sorry, Elijah,” Caroline enunciated with pageant precision.

Elijah hummed, and for the life of her, she didn’t know if he was unconcerned, annoyed, or laughing his ass off. “It has been over ten centuries. I’ve grown accustomed.”

Laughing his ass off, then. Super.

Discovery+ (Discovery Plus) is an online streaming platform. Discovery Inc. It offers an online digital content publishing service developed and commissioned by

Discovery+ history

Discovery+ content platform launched in 2020. It was put into service for the first time in the Indian market. Before the end of 2020 , it revised its Dplay service , which serves the European continent  , and put it into service in Europe with the “Discovery+” brand. Discovery+ debuted in the US in early 2021.

It has grown in a short time in the global market. In August 2021, it managed to exceed 18 million subscribers. The service was launched in Canada in October 2021. Discovery Inc. has published a program regarding the countries where Discovery+ will be put into service in the global market.

A Witch Watches HGTV: Flea Market Flip

I'll be honest...I never thought I would like an HGTV show with the word "flip" in the title. And even though I often refer to this show as "The People Ruin Perfectly Good Furniture Show",  the truth is it is one of my favorite shows on HGTV.

Every week, the show pits two teams of "flippers" against each other.  Each team is given $500 and one hour in a flea market to pick out finds for three different projects.  They then go back to work shop where they proceed to "flip" their finds into something much more attractive.   They then take those finds to a different market and try to sell them for a profit.  The team that makes the most net profit (Profit minus money spent on items) wins $5000.

Because its different people competing each week, there are times when I cry and pull my hair as some idiot applies chalk paint to a beautiful wooden chair and other times when I'm astounded when someone takes a dresser that's a little worse for wear and turns it into a masterpiece.

And honestly, the anticipation of those extremes is probably what makes the show so entertaining.

The show airs on HGTV, DIY, and you can catch marathons and new episodes on GAC (Great American Country) on the weekends.  Its hosted by Lara Spencer, who is also on Good Morning America on ABC. It's been on the air since 2012.

A typical episode begins with Lara introducing two pairs--they may be married, siblings, friends, co-workers--there are all sorts of pairings.  Anyone can be on the show, some of them are experience craftspeople and others are people who just want to give it a go.  The two teams may or  may not know each other.

They start at a flea market, usually the Brimfield Antique Flea Market in Brimfield, Massachusetts. Each team is give $500 to buy objects and materials for three themed projects. The themes are usually fairly open. Sometimes it's a stylistic theme such a rustic or mid-century, other times it will be something like a pair of objects or a particular material such as metal or glass.  For me at least, I enjoy following the teams along and getting glimpse of all the neat stuff at flea market.

Next, they got to a workshop where skilled crafts people help transform their finds into new pieces. This is the point where I really decide who to root for--I love contestants who look to restore vintage pieces or take something that seems like junk and reinvent into something useful. I tend to root against anyone who paints over perfectly good wood or a lovely old patina.  

In the final part of the show, they go to another flea market, usually one in Long Island in New York. Here the teams try and sell their reinvented pieces to make a profit.  I admit, I sometimes skip this part unless I am a) marathoning it on GAC and don't feel like changing the channel or b) I really like one of the teams and their projects and want to cheer them on.  

While the resell aspect isn't my favorite part and tends to tread towards my anti-flipping instincts, I do like the competitive aspect some and guess this is actually a more fair way to decide than I judge.  Really, my favorite part is watching people take something that had essentially been discarded, finding beauty in it, and making it into something new while retaining the original items charm.  

As host, I generally enjoy Lara Spencer.  I find she's cheerful without being too obnoxious.  She also really is into design and flea market finds, having written books on the subject.  She tries to advise the contestants every step of the way and her advice is usually pretty good.  

Overall, Flea Market Flip is a good show.  It's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon while working on project of your own.  Or just to have on to get some inspiration for your next trip to the flea market or secondhand store.

I would absolutely be down to watch Laudna’s HGTV show where she fixes up little cabins in the woods only to be inevitably chased out of town by an angry mob that thinks she’s a witch.

If anyone has recommendations for TV shows appropriate for a 10 year old and enjoyable (or at least tolerable) for me, I’d be happy to hear them.

In the last two years, we’ve watched GBBO/S (including the holiday episodes), Worst Witch, Anne with an E, Bob’s Burgers (minus a couple of episodes that are a bit much for 10), some popular HGTV home renovation shows, and a couple of shows that are basically kid versions of The Twilight Zone. We attempted The Simpsons, Adventure Time, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and the new Ducktales, but she wasn’t into them.

Right now, we’re watching Teen Titans because it’s something she watches at her dad’s house, but that needs to stop. It’s sparked LOTS of conversations about toxic masculinity and gender roles and the Friend Zone trope, etc. It’s great to be having those conversation, but it’s NOT great to be having them regularly as an antidote to bad examples.

→ History West wasn’t exactly planned by his young parents and is considered their mistake baby. He was a disappointment to them but he had no idea why or how to fix it. His parents kept him away from other pack members and out of daycare. He was unpopular, soft spoken, gangly and bullied by his human peers when he entered grade school. One day, in the 2nd grade, everything changed for him. In early May, right before school was to let out for the summer, Dakota English saved him from a massive beating by his bullies. Dakota threw rocks, knocking some kids out and distracting others, long enough for West to escape. He knew her from the pack but had never interacted with her before. That day they formed a lasting friendship and bond. Which was solidified by spending their summer vacation tormententing his bullies in rat form.

West found his voice with Dakota and broke out of the shell his parents built around him. He started incorporating himself into his pack, against his parents wishes, and quickly made friends with the other pack members his age and older. However, the damage made by his parents had already taken great effect on his early life. Nothing he did could please them and it finally took a mental toll on him. The new bonds he was forming weren’t enough to stop him from turning to drugs, smoking and potion mixtures once he was older. West had his first cigarette at the age of 11, he started smoking marijuana at 13, popped his first pill at 14, stole and drank his first intoxication hallucination potion at 16. That’s when he was caught by Jalissa Toll. She aided him but was obligated to tell Nick, Mills and his parents. His parents practically disowned him. That’s when they confirmed that they were trying for a new and better baby. While Nick and Mills tried to keep it from the pack, his parents outed his addictions, causing a newfound hatred for them.

Alongside Jalissa, Dakota started to aid West in his addiction, which is in part responsible for taking their friendship to the next level. Since the day that she saved his life from those bullies, West knew she was going to be his mate. He was sure she felt the same way, but silently they both seemed to agree not to act on their feelings or instincts. It was only after his accident with Jalissa, that he confided in Dakota and took their relationship to the next level, officially becoming a couple with intentions of being a mated pair. West started training for BOND at 17 by Michael, Dakota’s father. He told West it was his intention to keep him too busy to bed his daughter or participate in his drug usage. His thirst for knowledge helped him raise the ranking, with just 4 months into NERVOUS, beginners training/team, West was able to join BOND before he graduated High School. With the blessings of Dakota’s parents and Nick, West mated with Dakota after finishing their bachelor’s degree.

Even with everyone’s help and Dakota by his side, as he started to take on more responsibility, West started taking heaviers drugs and darker potions again. He and Dakota were out on a BOND mission, involving witches and warlocks, when everything went wrong. Inquiring about a liquid euphoria potion to the wrong witch had cost Dakota an eye. It quickly sobered him up. West blamed himself and his bad habits. It took him days to fully realize what Dakota had done, and what that meant from her. He agonized for weeks trying to show her his guilt and love and apology for what he did. After about a month, Dakota got sick of him hovering around her and they eased their way back to normal. West has cut back on his using a lot, but he still hasn’t kicked anything.

→ The Present West has returned to school for his Master’s degree and has been taking business courses online. Like Jaxson, and a select few other pack members, West wants to have his own business in SUGAR, while working with BOND and ANUBIS. West and Dakota have been saving up to start buying properties around the world to stay in during missions. They’ve been tossing around ideas but have yet to decide on what they’ll be selling or what services they want to provide. They’ve thrown around a non-suit clothing store, a bakery, and the current favorite, house flipping.

Last week the pack found out that they had eloped when someone ‘mistakenly’ opened a letter addressed to the both of them. It was their marriage certificate. Michael, Rina and a few other pack members have congratulated them. A few other members, including Nick,  have not brought it up. West can feel their eyes lingering on them longer than usual. He knows they’re the talk of the pack and they’ll have some questions to answer sooner rather than later, when everyone’s shock wears off.

1. Do you knit or crochet or both?

I can not for the life of me knit, I tried and it ended with me hurling the needles across the room. I love crochet tho!!

I love pastels and soft earth tones, and I don’t use brighter tones too often since I can barely match colors as it is, much less with neon.

13. Do you like to watch TV while you craft? If so, what’s your favorite program?

I usually listen to podcasts while I crochet! Mostly MBMBAM, but if I am watching tv it’s probably Criminal Minds or a HGTV show (I like Tiny House Nation).

14. What type of music do you listen to when you craft?

Soft acoustic usually, like The Oh Hellos and The Crane Wives. It makes me feel like an aged witch living in a cottage.

About 2 years! When I met my stepmom, it was one of the things we bonded over, and she taught me how to do it during the summer when I was bored out of my mind.

intro to genevieve, pt. 1

So I saw this post about ABCs of OCs and decided to do it for my OC, Genevieve. I regret nothing. @ocelotsflatass, maybe this might interest you???

A: Aptitude 1. Viv is very verbal, so she’s good with words, texts, communication, writing, analysis--all of that. She studied Foreign Languages and Literature in the DMC world’s equivalent of college or university, so her main role at the DMC shop is primarily research. She was also pretty decent at biology. Loves plants, would have been a good botanist. EDIT, because I can’t believe I forgot to add this: Viv is a witch, and her strongest areas are plant magic and divination.  2. Um... piano?  3. Viv worked hard to be able to play piano as well as she does. Also chemistry and physics kicked her ass in school, but she genuinely enjoys them as subjects because she does like science, so she worked hard to pass them. Especially since they were mandatory subjects. She works on her magic as well.  4. Please don’t ask her to do anything except basic math. Or draw anything, either, but she loves art.   5. Her most impressive talent is being fluent in like 3 languages, especially because one of those three has a different grammatical system and alphabet. She’s conversational in at least 2 more besides those. Also, making plants grow, scrying, cartomancy. She’s pretty handy.

B: Basics 1. Viv is blonde. I’m still deciding on an exact shade.  2. She has blue eyes, darker than Dante and Vergil’s. Pretty dark, actually. Not very pale. Has a dark limbal ring.   3. Viv is 5′4″, or says she is, at least. She’s kind of fine-boned as well. 4. She’s in her mid-to-late 20′s. 5. Don’t you know better than to ask someone how much they weigh? (for the record, though, the answer is “not that much.”)

C: Comfort 1. Sits pretty normally in a chair, but will do whatever is comfortable for her at the moment, no matter what it is--criss-cross or propping her feet up.  2. Viv is a stomach or side sleeper, usually. Prefers to lie on her left side.  3. Her idea of a chill day is a day when she doesn’t have anything to do, so she can get things that she should do done. Snow day? Pajamas. Netflix. Laundry.  4. Anything starchy and salty, really, but she is fond of hot soup, especially matzoh ball.  5. Her parents are the best at cheering her up, mostly because they’ve had the most experience with her, but her best friend/ex-girlfriend Zoe is also fairly good at it. Dante will do his absolute best, even though it’s not something he’s used to, and he is getting better at it. 

D: Decoration 1. Viv’s style is an eclectic mix of boho-modern with classic with crazy plant lady.  2. Viv is very much about the Aesthetic™, so any kid of hers will have a pretty kickass room. Probably green, because it’s gender-neutral. Lots of stuffed animals, and a reading nook, so she can read to her child or sing to them.  3. Her room is covered in books, her furniture is somewhat antique-looking, there are plants everywhere. It’s organized chaos. The walls are a light, neutral color, and the blinds and curtains are almost always open, because she loves natural light. 100% watches HGTV in her free time.  4. Viv is pretty boho, but she also likes a lot of structure in her outfits and her tastes do veer towards classic. It could probably be summarized as “dark academia/The Secret History groupie meets punk meets an extra from Picnic at Hanging Rock.”  5. Depends on the trend. Viv has no qualms about adopting trends, or parts of trends, that she likes and discarding whatever it is she doesn’t. She does like having short nails because they’re easier to keep clean, and does like to paint them even though they chip after two days no matter how many coats she puts on. 

E: External Personality 1. There’s sometimes a split where Viv is acting like her real self, but gets really insecure about it and tries to overcompensate, versus times where she’s pretty comfortable in her own skin. It really depends on how she’s feeling, and who she’s with.  2. Viv is very good at appearing normal, at the very least. There’s a part of her that realizes compromises need to be made and that blending in can be a very useful and powerful thing.  3. She doesn’t feel obligated to follow trends, but will adopt one if it’s something she likes. She could care less if she was hip or not.  4. Viv likes memes, if nothing else? And Vines. RIP Vine.  5. She feels like her own personality changes. She initially comes across as introverted--not necessarily shy, but reserved and focused. It takes some warming up and some time for someone to discover what she’s really like. 

F: Fun 1. Viv likes to read, hike, garden, and watch movies. She’s big on horror movies, especially supernatural horror movies and psychological thrillers.  2. Ideally it’s something chill and intimate, where there’s a lot of chatter and everyone is close friends. But... she is also not adverse to a rager where there are a ton of drunk people and couples making out in every corner. Something about house parties like those makes her let loose a little. She wouldn’t throw one of them herself, but doesn’t mind going to one. However, once she’s reached her max noise/stimulation threshold, she’s out.  3. Her close friends. She and Zoe, and her previous partners Sonali and Eli, all got up to some shenanigans when they were together.  4. For the most part, the fun Viv likes to have doesn’t really break any laws, but she could definitely be persuaded to do something illegal as long as 1) nobody gets hurt and 2) she doesn’t get arrested.  5. Viv is kind of a homebody, but she does go through periods of intense wanderlust and cabin fever, especially during winter. (She also has a bit of SAD, but that’s neither here nor there)

A Witch Watches: Tidying Up with Marie Kondo

First, I’ve decided to shorten this to A Witch Watches, because really HGTV is a wasteland at this point and I rarely watch it anymore.   But there are lots of great home/garden/cooking shows elsewhere I want to talk about.

Second, anyone who follows my blog knows my absolute disdain for minimalism and might therefore suspect that I would absolutely hate this show.  They might look at the clutterbitch and cottagecore that makes up a good part of my feed and wait gleefully for me to rip into her.

Well, they would be wrong. 

I have to admit, I wasn’t too interested in her book when it came out and had really little interest at first in the show.  I had watched shows like Hoarders and Clean House enough to know that they were always a bit painful for me to watch.  It was always the same--some well-meaning “organization expert” asking some poor soul when was the last time they used something or wore something and then tossing into a sell or throw out pile, while you could see the person’s heart break just a little.

However, the buzz around the show grew and grew.  And it was, indirectly, related to the stuff I talk about here.  So I figured I would give it a go, steeling myself for more misery, prepared to hate it.

I loved it! SO MUCH!

But before talking about why I love it, I want to address why I think she’s gotten so much hate.  First, there is a very racist/xenophobic component that lots of others have addressed much better than I could.

The other is that early on the whole minimalism “movement” latched on to her as one of their own.  For those who find the movement classist and cruel, it is easy to dismiss anyone associated with them as the same.  Even I made that mistake in my post on Clutter vs. Junk.

While Kondo’s personal aesthetic is minimalist, that isn’t her purpose.  Her method is about learning to connect to the things you do have and be thoughtful about them.  I found her approach was much more in line with my own approach than what I had previously come across.

So onto what I love about Marie Kondo:

Emphasis on the spiritual connection to our homes and belongings.

Kondo starts every session by kneeling on the floor, spending time connecting to house and asking permission to tidy it up.  She encourages her clients to thank the items they are removing.  There is throughout the show and emphasis on the energy the items we surround ourselves with and how it affects us.  Hearth and home witchcraft places a special emphasis on our spiritual connection to our homes.  I’ve previously pointed to the Japanese cultural connection to the home and its spiritual connotations when talking about my Ghibli influences.  So, it was nice to see Kondo try and introduce the concept to a western audience.

It’s not about usefulness.

Rather than the typical “Do you use this?” type questions I’ve seen other de-clutterers use, Konda asks two simple questions “Does this spark joy?” and “Do you see this as part of your future?” The first question acknowledges that we have a connection to our possessions beyond usefulness.  Indeed, Kondo breaks down her tidying into different categories and sentimental items get their own category.

The second question helps look at purpose, rather the “usefulness”.  It gets to the why of the person is holding onto it.  The one that really spoke to me was the guy who collected sneakers.  He had a roomful of expensive shoes he had collected over the years and never worn.  On most shows, the expert would have told him to get rid of them.  In this case though, he instead chooses to get rid of the shoes he wears all the time.  His wife is dismayed at first, but he explains he had these shoes he loved but wasn’t really enjoying.  So he picked out his favorite pairs of the expensive shoes to keep and actually wear and enjoy.  He then got rid of the excess of his shoe collection that he didn’t feel a connection with or those that had fallen apart.

Recently, I reorganized my closet and ended up taking everything out so I could put things according to category to find them easier (ie skirts, pants, blouses, etc).  As I went through my things, I found so many cute and fun pieces I had never worn.  I have been a stay at home parent for almost a decade and over time my everyday clothes had drifted to yoga/sweat pants and t-shirts and jeans when I had to leave the house.  I thought about getting rid of all these clothes I loved but didn’t wear, but it made me really sad.  Instead, I resolved to make an effort to wear them more when I left house.  Even if I’m just grocery shopping, I feel much stronger and myself wearing those clothes.  It help me realized there really is power in adopting an aesthetic.

No Shame. She keeps things positive.

Kondo never shames people for being messy.  Indeed she doesn’t treat messiness as a failing, simply something that happens and an opportunity to change things up.  Getting messy is indeed actually part of her process as you take everything in one of her categories, put it in a pile, and then go through it.  She also understands that you have to be in the right frame of mind to tackle a mess, that its ok if it sits for a bit until you’re ready to deal with it.  We see this in particular with the woman who was a widow--Kondo adjusts the order of her system so the widow can tackle the areas she feels most comfortable, knowing that she is still grieving.

Also, this isn’t a makeover show.  People’s homes still look pretty close to what they were when they started.  Indeed, sometimes the homes seemed perfectly fine to me when Kondo and her translator arrive and I wondered why she was there.  Often it was more about the energy of the home and feeling lost and disconnected from their belongings.  And after watching, even though the homes visually look the same, the feeling--the energy is what really changed.

I mean this show is really all about joy and in particular about bring joy into your life though connecting to your home.  I highly recommend it and Kondo’s method if you want to bring some order to your life.
