my academic journey (warning: i ranted) -
so ever since i started school till about the end of 8th grade i was always a 90%+/straight A student. the kind of child my classmates & cousins would be compared too. not trying to glamorize comparison btw, i personally think that's really toxic & pressurizing. so yeah, i was a "good" quiet kid. i listened attentively in class and submitted all my homework on time. the only complain teachers had about me was that i was "too quiet" but that wasn't a real issue. i was just shy but talkative with my few friends yano. i spent the entirety of 7th grade & most of 8th grade in online classes so my habits of studying went to shit. still somehow managed 91% in my 8th grade finals. and then 9th began and it all went downhill. teachers kept saying 'next year is ur board exams, u need to study a lot, etc, etc.' so if u're not from india we basically have these major 'board exams' at the end of 10th & 12th grade. but 10th boards don't really matter all that much, teachers just make a big fuss about it. 12th boards matter, but that's also the time we give college entrance exams and that sorta matters more according to most ppl. n yeah, idk what happened but i got overwhelmed. i could no longer just do well in class and study before exams and get good marks. i felt dumb. my grades didn't see a single improvement. i honestly gave up in the middle of it all and got sick of school. and at one point, it became less burn out & more clinging to the familiarity of not doing anything. i became lazy. and i became a hypocrite. i'd always tell myself, this time i'm gonna study, this time i'm gonna score well. well that 'this time' never came. 10th grade got even worse and i scored 73% in my board exams because i barely studied at all. at the same time, my relationship with my parents has constantly been unraveling. and i saw just how much of their 'pride' was dependent on me being the kid they could show off and smile widely when others replied 'wow she's going places'. my father can't hold a single conversation with me now that doesn't go back to me being a disappointment. and now i'm the kid who has to listen to her parents compare her to others. 'be like her, your friend', they say. halfway though 11th rn and i guess what?? still no fucking improvement. but the thing is i know this is the last straw. i can feel it. i got around 64% in my first tests (pa-1) of 11th. haven't gotten mid term results yet but i'm estimating just above 50%. and the thing is it's not that i can't score well. i know my potential all too well. i know i can score such high marks. but the problem is i don't study. if i just studied a couple hours every day, i can easily manage above 80%. with constant improvement i can manage above 90% again. but i don't. and that's ending right this instant. i'm not gonna turn into an academic weapon overnight or smth ik that. but i'm gonna start slowly but surely working hard. i have big dreams, i know i can achieve them if i just put in the effort. plans have been made, all i need to do is execute them. execute my laziness. i'm gonna get better. i'm gonna prove everyone who thinks i'm never gonna do it wrong, and i'm gonna prove myself right. this comeback will be for me, my inner child. the little kid in me deserves to not wind up a washed-out failure.
academic goals! -
pa-2 - 75-80%
11th finals - 80-85%
12th pa-1 - above 90%
uni - iiser (college for pure science research, bs + ms integrated)

Back to university!
Apologies for the lack of posts over the summer, I quite honestly didn’t stop moving from end of June until just now. But with the first week of uni out of the way, I am back in the swing of homework and posting.
I am taking a number of very interesting classes this semester. The above is from my Linguistics class. I also have classes on the History and Theory of Anthropology, the Crusades, and Great European Film Directors of the Late 20th Century.
Plenty of papers due the rest of the year, as well as acting as a writing fellow. I have a new job as a writing and communication consultant, so I will be up to my ears in Chicago style papers in a few weeks.
Not much time for reading or seeing recently and I need to catch up on more than a few emails and letters. But first, diphthongs!

THE DANCE OF JUSTICE: A RAWLSIAN PERSPECTIVE IN SRIVIDYA NATARAJAN'S THE UNDOING DANCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Devadasis are women dedicated to a Hindu deity or temple. They often learn and perform classical dances and music as part of their service. However, the tradition has a complex history and has been associated with both cultural significance and social exploitation.
This article delves into the role of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance, as a transformative force for Kalyani, the protagonist in the novel The Undoing Dance (2018). It investigates how Bharatanatyam serves not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a means of transcending caste boundaries and societal expectations. By applying the concept of the difference principle, a framework within socio-political theory, the study examines how caste-based discrimination is confronted and reimagined through the medium of dance.

I worked double (as a managing editor and director) for the whole 14 months of the cancer treatment process because nobody from the editorial board cared about either me or the Journal despite several calls for help. I worked because I didn't have the employment status (I worked on the contracts) and now I have. On top of that I worked for 50% less than the previous managing editors and directors (because there was no money for me).
I saved the Journal that still exists but who cares about me, right? I've been ill for the past 6 months after the cancer (each month I have a virus and bacterial infections).
Even going through the cancer treatment alone is a difficult experience let alone working double shifts while going through the treatments.
That's the state of society and the world we currently live in.
However, I'm happy and proud that I managed everything.

A Babylonian clay model showing a nude couple engaged in kissing.
Tumblr media
The world’s oldest recorded kiss might have happened 4,500 years ago in the Middle East, a study finds.
Humanity’s earliest record of kissing dates back about 4,500 years in the ancient Middle East, 1,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to researchers.
Scientists have highlighted evidence that suggests kissing was practiced in some of the earliest Mesopotamian societies and documented in ancient texts from 2500 BC that have been largely overlooked.
The authors' findings were published in the academic journal 'Science' in 2023.
It showed evidence that "kissing on the mouth is attested to in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt," as early as 2,500 BC.

Unseen side effect of unregulated data collection: everything is cheaper if you use the app. If you just like them have access to your phone, how often you flip from coupon to coupon, how often you think about ordering some Popeyes, etc. If you don’t want this, you are taxed.
This hurts older and disabled consumers who make not have access to an app. And is just annoying to those of us who don’t want to freaking use it - who don’t want to have the little advertisement on the phone!

Introducing Sound Fields
Sound Fields is a new online publication and event series dedicated to the art of audio documentary in theory and practice. We are a group of audio documentary-makers and narrative podcasters working toward a community of practice where we explore and define for ourselves our critical orientations, artistic goals, ethical concerns, creative lineages and dreams for the future of our field.
Our inaugural issue asks "What is audio documentary?" We are seeking pitches for commissioned essays, thoughtful Q+As between those practicing and responding to audio documentary work, and short multimedia submissions that respond to this fundamental question.

In 1877, a colleague sent Charles Darwin an academic journal with an unusual series of photographs. Taken by the German scientist Robert Koch, they were the first photographs of bacteria ever published.

I am so happy to be back in London! I took the last few days to get over my jet lag, but I am back at the museum. I am helping get ready for the D-Day displays, as tomorrow is the 80th anniversary. Lots of wonderful artifacts are going to be used and they all need captions.
I took a couple wonderful walks (10 miles total) in order for ire myself out enough to sleep. I am hoping to be much more active in terms of updating my journal with reading and various other odds and ends. I have seen so many wonderful friends already and I can’t wait to see more. I have missed this city very much.
