Been thinking too hard on this song I made in 2018 so I just decided to scribble together a cover on a paper towel and put it out. ---
Written, produced and recorded by me.
Cover art also by me.

Nasty Man™️ Johnny MacTavish would cross every line and break every rule of a lap dance.
He'd see you from across the club and is already plotting ways to get you alone in one of the private rooms so he can have his hands all over you and help you “relax” 🥴
he's a lil’ creep :)
(18+ MDNI, dub-con/non-con themes)
You can’t even remember why you’re here.
It’s loud, bass thumping in the hollow of your chest, the warmth of writhing bodies weighs heavy in the air, and flashing lights seem to follow your eyes everywhere you look without reprieve. That’s why you don’t see him, don’t notice him staring at you from across the club, and now your friends are whistling and whooping at the dark stranger climbing the steps into your alcove.
“This is the guy I told you about,” Kari leans over to whisper-shout, cupping a hand in a feeble attempt to speak over the music pouring out of the speakers overhead.
Ah, that’s right. Kari wanted to see if the dancer from the near constant stream of videos she inundates the group chat with is here tonight. Seems tonight is her lucky night, because when he steps into your circle he pivots towards the two of you, long legs rippling the slash of cut muscle and tanned skin on display beneath ripped jeans slung low on his hips, obliques bunching and flexing with the subtle tilt of his hips with each measured step. Swaggering.
And he comes to a halt—right in front of you. It’s a long way up, craning your neck at an awkward angle to look up at the silhouette of him against strobe and colorful spotlights. You don’t know what you were expecting. The black leather harness straining over his chest and distressed jeans feel fairly standard, as does his physique and rugged handsomeness, but the warmth that ripples off his body feels like a riptide instead of the languid roll of lapping waves, dragging you under and filling your lungs with the scent of sea spray and brine, the musk of his sweat mixed with whatever he’s oiled his skin with.
“Ooooo girl!” Kari grips your arm, acrylic nails scratching over your skin, and it pulls you out of your dumbfounded stupor enough for you to register the hand he’s holding out to you. “If you don’t go, I will!”
Go? With him? Where would we-
“Ye look a bit overwhelmed, lass. Think somethin’ more… private, might be your style.”
Oh…
Kari snakes her arm between your back and the tufted faux leather of the bench and bodily pushes you forward to the edge of your seat, towards his outstretched hand, and you’re caught wholly off guard when gentle fingers hook under your chin, tipping your head back at an uncomfortable angle to meet his gaze.
The brightest blue of a searing flame feels gelid in comparison to the heat that dances and flickers in his eyes, and they feel sharp as knives against your skin, boring into you, slicing through layers of trepidation and apprehension to get to the core of you.
“Promise ye wilnae regret it.” The pad of his thumb brushes across your lower lip, a slow, exploratory movement that sends a shudder trickling down your spine.
Goading shouts of ‘Go!’ and ‘Get some, girl!’ permeate the hazy bubble you’re floating in with him, echoing and bouncing off of flimsy boundaries.
“I- I don’t know… You should take Kari, she-” You’re silenced by the press of his thumb to your lips again, mouth still parted on half-spoken words, and you can feel the swipe of his flesh across the front of your teeth.
“-She’s not the one who needs help relaxin’. You are,” he finishes for you, and it sounds more like a command than an observation. The fingers under your chin tug upwards, straining the muscles of your neck, and you lift subconsciously from your seat to ease the tension. He takes advantage of this and slots a hand under your arm, pulls you up and firmly against him, and turns your head to the side to whisper low in your ear, “I’ll take good care of ye, lass. Dinnae need to worry.”
There’s a collective gasp from the group around you, excited squeals and peals of laughter that ring out over the music. ‘Go!’ they all chant in a cult-like mantra. Go to the private room with the handsome stranger.
Go to the private room where the lights don’t hurt your eyes and the music isn’t so loud.
His hand still holds your face, cups your jaw to draw your attention back to him, and the hand on your ribs has drifted down to your waist, thumb rubbing circles over the fabric of your dress.
“Ok…” you cede, voice a meek whisper and eyes darting away from his to settle on his lips, feeling too scrutinized, laid bare, under their watchfulness.
It shouldn’t be possible but his smile is somehow brighter than the flashing lights, disorienting enough that you blink a few times until the spots across your vision fade. The hand at your waist slides easily around you, tucking you into his side as he leads you away from the alcove, through throngs of patrons and dancers towards the roped off rooms at the back of the club with velvet lined walls and thick curtains across each doorway.
He guides you down onto the sofa that wraps around the entirety of the room, downy upholstery tickling the back of your legs as he draws the curtain closed, and your eyes mimic the motion with a gentle sigh as you sink into the softness that dampens the sound beyond the room, filters out the harsh light in favor dim ambiance.
Maybe he’s right. Maybe you just need to sit here for a moment away from…. Well, away from all of it. Take a moment, and just-
“Och, look at ye… just need a bit of quiet, hm?” The low purr of his voice right in front of you causes you to jolt, eyes snapping open to find him knelt down at eye level with you, arms braced against the sofa on either side of your knees.
You start to apologize but he shakes his head, one big hand sliding over your knee in a soothing gesture.
“None of that. Here to help ye relax, bonnie.” His hand drifts higher up your leg, strong fingers kneading at the supple flesh hidden beneath ruched fabric, and you think distantly that this feels more intimate than a private dance should. “Close those pretty eyes and just focus on the way it feels. Can ye do that for me?”
In the dim lighting the warmth in his eyes blazes bright and fervent with an eager insistence, an illuminating display of hunger and want that burns through your nerves like wildfire.
You take a deep, steadying breath and let your eyes fall closed once more, and the answering growl that rumbles in his chest in response to your submission pools unbidden warmth between your legs.
“Good girl, so good for me. Gonnae take such good care of ye.” Something warm and hard presses against your legs, and before you have time to think about how good that feels, both of his hands find the back of your knees and pull. They force your knees apart, yank you forward to the edge of your seat so that he’s knelt between your legs.
He clicks his tongue at the flutter of your lashes, eyes trying to open and make sense of the jarring repositioning of your lower extremities, and says, “‘S okay, keep ‘em closed. Just need t’ get a bit closer.” It is a dance afterall. But still, the notion that something about it isn’t quite what it should be festers at the far reaches of your mind.
“Give me yer hands.” It’s softer this time, his voice when he makes the request, but the demand and expectation there is clear–he’s leading, and you’re following. With tentative movements you reach out blindly in front of you until you feel the warmth of his hands enveloping and guiding yours, placing them against something rough that scratches between your palms.
His face, you realize, as your thumb brushes over the stubble on his jaw, tracing the strong line of it from his chin up to his ear. The hair is short there too, shorn close to his scalp, but it feels softer, pleasant against your fingertips. He hums, whether in approval or simply in reaction to your clumsy exploration you can’t decipher, and you can feel the way it vibrates in his throat against your hand lingering on his jaw.
Lost in the new sensation of him you don’t immediately realize where his hands have settled on you, palms rough with callouses gliding over exposed skin and up the expanse of your thighs to capture your hips, long fingers only just grazing your rear. He pulls you closer, closer to the edge, and your arms instinctively wrap around his shoulders, seeking balance and support from the broad expanse of them.
With his hands splayed across your ribs on either side he presses his face into your neck, dragging his nose up towards your jaw and breathing in long and deep, the shuddering exhale of his breath zapping against your sensitive skin in tantalizing currents.
“Had my eyes on ye all night,” he murmurs, and you can feel the brush of his lips against skin that's begun to warm beneath his touch.
Odd, you think, for a patron to catch the eye of a dancer. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? A lot of this should be happening inversely, or perhaps not at all. It feels like a violation of the rules, a breach in etiquette, to have so much contact with him–to be touching him.
“Need to know, pretty thing. Need to know… what ye taste like.” He’s panting when he voices that particular desire, voice rough and breathless, and it feels funny that he should be the one short of breath when you haven’t taken one since he put his hands on you, still holding onto the dwindling supply of air and withering sense of propriety.
This… this should not be happening, you think as he tips you back, big hands pushing you down onto the couch again and this time your eyes do more than flutter, opening wide as your back meets the cushion beneath you.
“Sir, I- this isn’t what-”
“I ken it’s not what ye thought it would be, bonnie. Doesnae change the fact that it’s what ye need,” he cuts you off, gruff and adamant in his assessment of you.
What you need? You don’t need this. The privacy is nice, yes, and he’s certainly a welcome sight, but this isn’t a dance. This isn’t what you agreed to.
He must be able to see your confusion, the warring thoughts in your mind written on your face as plainly as a line drawn on a battlefield. How your mind struggles to reconcile the sudden shift. How that line in sand has been trampled beyond recognition and you don't know which side of it you're standing on anymore. He has to know because he laughs, a warm flutter of breath ticking across your inner thighs.
The gasp that tears from your lungs when his teeth sink into the meat of your thigh, fanning dormant embers of desire you're only now becoming aware of, only seems to amuse him further. Makes his lips, pulled apart in a grin, vibrate against your skin before biting you again. You try to pull away from him but he curls a massive arm around your leg, holding you firmly in place for his tongue to lave over the imprint of his teeth on your skin.
“Just as sweet as she looks,” he remarks, more to himself than you, and his hands push the fabric of your dress up past your hips. You squirm in his grasp but he just wraps the other arm around you and coos sweet sounds between your legs, hooks them over his shoulders and clamps his hands around your hips once more. “Jus’ need some attention, hm? Poor girl, cannae breathe with these, can ye?”
Is he… talking to your pussy?
You get your answer when you feel the hot press of his mouth over the thin scrap of lace.
What the fuck is happening?
Not normal. This is not normal. This should not be happening.
It makes your head spin, the steady stream of realization that trickles in through the haze of… You don’t want to admit what you’re feeling. Don’t want to admit that amidst your panic and confusion, how suddenly the situation escalated, you never said no.
You aren’t saying no. You should be saying no.
“Such a pretty wee cunt,” he lilts as a hand trails down and pulls your panties to the side, revealing the most intimate part of you to him.
You can feel your body's betrayal of your emotions, the cooling sensation of his breath against the slick gathering between your thighs. It sends tumultuous sparks of pleasure up your spine and makes your fingers flex against the couch beneath you, seeking purchase and finding none. He coos at this, digs his fingers into your hips and presses his lips to your folds like he’s kissing your mouth, tongue flicking out to taste your slick and teeth nipping at the soft flesh.
It’s maddening how good it feels, how tormented you are about even remotely liking it. He’s taken you here under false pretense and forced himself upon you. You should be angry with him. But it's hard to separate the confusion from the adrenaline, the fear from the lust that addles your senses.
“Ye’re thinkin’ too much. Relax.” His voice is rough, pitched low and graveled by his own desire, and he digs his thumbs into your hip flexors, smoothing out the muscles wrought with tension. “‘S’posed to feel good, bonnie. Let me take care of ye, work ye over how ye need.”
You open your mouth to protest, to say someone might hear, might walk in and see you, separated by only a curtain from the rest of the club. The words die on your tongue when he cards his through your silken folds in one broad stroke, warm and wet and so fucking good, illiciting a string of breathy moans in place of your objections. A growl of assent rumbles in his chest again, rocking through you in wicked bolts, nerves firing in tandem with the movements of his tongue lapping at your entrance like a man starved.
Despite how your mind still kicks and thrashes, desperate to pull your head above water and think clearly, your body can't help its response to him, surrendering to the undertow that pulls  you further into the hazy depths of pleasure with each fervent swipe of his tongue.
“Tha’s it sweet girl, doin so good.” He has no right, none at all, to make you feel this way. Warm and wanting, squirming closer, trying to find more friction. He doesn’t deserve the sniveling whimpers that crawl up your throat, the hands that blindly seek the shock of messy hair to pull him closer and beg for more.
And he gives it to you, focuses his attention on your aching bundle of nerves in tight, precise circles, coaxing you closer to the swell that’s building at the base of your spine.
“Gonnae come for me?” His teeth wrap around your clit and you keen, cry out wantonly at the sudden sharpness of the sensation, the additional pressure, and a litany of yes’s flows forth from lips parted on a moan.
He’s relentless in his pursuit of your climax. Desperate, even, to feel your body go taut with pleasure, pressing his face so far between your legs you wonder if he can even breathe. Each flick of his tongue, scrape of his teeth, pushing you closer and closer until the tension breaks, a cresting wave of pleasure crashing over you and drowning your senses in liquid fire.
He works you to the point of overstimulation, until the drag of his tongue feels like a blade against your skin and your thighs burn from the scrape of his stubble. Only then, does he give you a reprieve, panting when he pulls back and peppers kisses over the raw skin.
“Such a good girl, did so well for me. Knew ye’d be good for me, bonnie.” He gathers you up, rights your undergarments and pulls your skirt back down your thighs before he helps you sit up, and his hand feels warm against your cheek, thumb swiping away the mascara running in inky trails down your face. “Gonna get ye some water, dinnae move,” he murmurs against your temple, lips pressed against your skin in a comparatively chaste kiss before all that warmth pulls away and you're left on your own.
You couldn’t go anywhere if you wanted to, knees too weak to even think about moving off the couch, lest you look like a wobbling faun stumbling back to your friends. But when the curtain opens, bright light from a flashlight shining into your eyes, you panic, eyes closing against the offending light and you push up onto your feet. You don’t stay up very long, however, as a wave of dizziness crashes into you full-force, sending you back down onto the couch in a clumsy heap.
“Oh, shit- are you alright? Hey,” The man in front of you crouches down, hands on your shoulders to hold you upright. He has a badge on his shirt. Security. “Do you know where you are?”
You rattle off the name of the club and some of the worry bunching his brows lessens.
“Have you had anything to drink?”
“He’s getting me water.”
“He? Your boyfriend?
“The dancer, his name-” You never did get his name, from him or Kari. “-he has a… a harness? And jeans. I think he has a mohawk too.” There's a funny look on his face now, like he doesn’t really believe you.
“Honey, we don’t have any dancers here tonight that look like that.”

I’M ENGAGED!
On May 5th, 2015, my best friend gathered a bunch of people to go see Avengers: Age of Ultron at the theater in the town next to my hometown. At the time, I was in no mood to be in a relationship... As I had only been single for maybe 6 months. When we got to the theater, she pointed across the foyer and said “There’s my college friends.”... I zeroed in on the guy that had the Sheldon Cooper shirt and yelled “OH MY GOD! SHELDON!”. I did NOT realize the guy I had just yelled at was super cute until AFTER I had yelled at him.
When we got into the actual theater, most of the college friends sat in the front, but the cute guy sat next to me. The more he talked, the more I liked him. I wanted to hold his hand, but I had just met him. It was kind of awkward because, on the other side of me was my best friend and her boyfriend who were cuddling...
After the movie, half of us went to IHOP and the others went to Rosa’s Tortilla Factory. The cute guy went to Rosa’s... He should have come to IHOP.... Because the other girl that was with my half of the group and I wouldn’t shut up about how cute the boy who sat next to me was. My best friend ended up scolding him the next morning saying stuff like “You’re in so much fucking trouble! My friends wouldn’t shut up about how cute they think you are!”. He asked her if he could have my number and she angrily said “YES! You can have her number!”. On April 4th, 2016, after almost a year of talking and getting to know each other, we started dating. A year later we went to see the live action remake of Beauty and the Beast. I got us rings that say “His Beauty” and “Her Beast”.
On May 5th, 2023, 8 years after we first met, we went to the theater in my town (the theater we met at closed down) to see Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. After the movie, he took me in front of the big poster in the theater’s foyer and proposed! Obviously I said “YES!”! His mom took pictures and gave us a $50 gift card to On The Border. When we left the theater, we went to the restaurant and ate Tex-Mex on the patio while we enjoyed live music. It was absolutely perfect!
Funnily enough, my fiancé accidentally let it slip what day he was gonna propose on before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania even came out, so I had time to prepare and make myself perfect. I got us shirts that were just like what we wore the day we met. I bought makeup and nail stuff to make sure my nails and makeup looked amazing and we both asked for the day off. I don’t wear makeup! Yet, for this day, I wore Sailor Moon eyeshadow and lip gloss, as well as eyeliner and mascara!
@candysweetposts edited Castiel’s proposal illustration to look like my fiancé and me. I sent her pictures of what we were gonna wear so that it would be as accurate to how the proposal would actually look as possible. I even sent her a pic of my engagement ring (because I helped my fiancé pick it out).
Drachea Rannak did a wedding image of our My Hero Academia characters, Slipstream and Kaiju, at their wedding. The background is the ballroom from the animated Beauty and the Beast and the arch is the Infinity Stones. Margot’s dress is the style I want, but I’m thinking about getting a black dress, so my fiancé is able to see her outfit and not have to worry about bad luck. We’re gonna use this image as our “Welcome Sign” for the wedding. Drachea also sent me the foreground of just the two of them so that I can get a custom acrylic stand made for the cake topper!

30 Days Paradox Live Challenge
Thanks to @fullmetalgirl98 who created the challenge ! I invite every Paralive fan who was looking for the chance to blurt things out to partecipate ahah
DAY 1: Favourite Unit
🎶Cozmez
Tumblr media
Ah yeah, the twin brothers who fought and struggled for their entire lives and who are trying to reach the top of the world, are you feeling the angst? They're made for me.
Okay, now let's be serious. I like them A LOT (I can also show my love for them irl thanks to @fullmetalgirl98 and her present, Nayuta and Kanata acrylic standees are in my library in plain sight eheh), but I remember that when I started getting into Paralive I was very indecisive about who my favourites were. In the end the choice fell on them, mainly thanks to their music, among all the groups Cozmez's music resonates more with me. I find it so scratchy, their style is always recognizable, even when the tones are slow (like in "Better Dayz"). And lastly, I think their vocal parts are always well balanced (well, they're two, it's easy ahah).
But music isn't all, I love the concept of the twins who find strenght in each other!! Leaving aside this detail, I also like them individually. They have their own character. Kanata has a strong will and gets mad easily, Nayuta seems apparently quieter. I know this duality is a bit of a cliché, but I'm a simple woman and this simplicity won me over ahah.

Artist Interview
Happy Boxing Day! I was tagged by @you-are-so-much-better-than-that in this artist interview.
1. Do you post on AO3? If so, how many works do you have on AO3? If not, where do you post?
I do post on AO3 as Suzy_Queue. I have two art galleries there, one for general art and one for Kinktober 2022.
2. What is your total art count?
If you count art done for other people's stories, headers for my own stories, and Gallacrafts pieces, it's around 150.
3. What are your top 5 pieces by likes/kudos?
I use this cool website to get my full Tumblr stats. According to them:
Tumblr media
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! Although I'm not the fastest at it.
5. What is your current fandom, and what was the first fandom you drew for?
Currently, it's Gallavich all the way. The first fandom I remember drawing for was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, making my own comics. (they were 7th-grade-girl bad).
6. Have you ever received hate on any art?
Nope, people are very supportive, even on pieces that I know aren't that great.
7. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t drawn for yet but want to?
I can't really think of any.
8. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
The one that has lived in my brain for the longest part of my life is Han/Leia.
9. Do you draw outside of fandom?
Yeah! I was an art major in college. I've been a professional artist for 20 years and have created art for book covers, movie posters, album covers, logos. I go to figure drawing sessions at a local art school and am in a nature journaling group. I've displayed my horror art at conventions around the country.
10. What’s the an art piece you’ve drawn that came out completely differently than you expected?
This was the first piece I ever drew on a tablet with a pressure-sensitive pen. It was an experiment to learn the tools. I had no idea how it would look, and it turned out all right.
Tumblr media
11. Do you draw smut?
Yep! There's some smut in this gallery.
12. Have you ever had any of your art stolen or copied?
Not that I know of.
13. Have you ever collaborated on a piece?
I've created art for stories working with the author, but I've never co-drawn a piece of art. Unless you count playing Exquisite Corpse with my children.
14. What’s an idea you have that you have yet to draw?
Oh, I have a lot. The one I think about most is a picture of Ian and Mickey in a lineup at jail, looking disheveled, hung over, and completely in love.
15. What are your drawing strengths?
I like my compositions a lot, the flow of items throughout the picture. I feel like I'm good at drawing what I see in a realistic way, whether it's a photo or real life.
16. What are your drawing weaknesses?
Drawing from memory/imagination. I have to have reference photos of what I'm doing or I go off the rails. I need to develop more trust in my own style and lean into weird proportions and my own skewed vision.
17. What’s your favorite art piece you’ve drawn?
I'm quite partial to this book cover art I did. It's spray paint, pastel, and acrylic. It's about 4 feet tall.
Tumblr media
18. What is one thing you’d like to tell people about your art that they might not know?
Just because I've been doing it for a while doesn't mean I'm not still learning every day.
19. What inspires or motivates you to create for fandom?
I have a lot of emotional energy churning below the surface. Creating art and fics helps get it out. It's a much more positive outlet than letting it brew.
20. And finally, can you describe your process a little? Do you have a favorite place to draw? Do you play something in the background? Do you do research or just go for it? Give us a little insight.
I have a basement office where I write and draw. I bought a new table this year which I absolutely love. I do most of my creative work between 9-11 pm after the rest of my family has gone to bed. I do love music and play it a lot while I draw.
I research a ton. I spend a lot of time making photo compositions for every piece I draw, which are collages of body parts and other images.

Thank you so much for the tag for this interview!

I REALLY ENJOYED READING THE GYARU!READER, SCENE!READER, AND LOLITA!READER THAT I WANTED TO GIVE OUT SOME OF MY HEADCANONS ON HOW THEY WOULD BE LIKE IN A FIGHT(ALSO SORRY IFS ITS LONG)
FOR GYARU!READER
How it started would probably be them fighting the nerds or the preps but if it were someone to try and fight them, they would bite their acrylics nails off(depend on what type of design they are) or use it on them
Yk one of those Waffle House or/and Popeyes employees right? That’s exactly how the fight would be
Would be the type to pull their hair during fighting
Would only get a nosebleed aftermath and only cried about their broken nail
Or may just look into their small blush makeup mirror and fixes their eyelash as everybody is shouting/cheering and being unbothered
Gary would join in for backup(even if they aren’t getting outnumbered)
FOR SCENE!READER
How it started was outside of bullworth and they were minding their own business listening to music in their headphones(if surprisingly Gary wasn’t around)
Until a group of jocks walked up to them and started to aggressively talked to them, and started to shout cause they weren’t hearing them
And if they tried to fight them
They would just dodge while also trying their best not to laugh at them being slow asses
And hc that they also have a high pain tolerance(meaning that if they somehow managed to get punched really hard, they would just laugh it off) “Ermmm what the flip dude:3”
Would probably use their bracelets if they try to do someone(barely happens)
But at the end, the fight would maybe last only a little bit cause Gary would immediately be there
FOR LOLITA!READER
They were probably lost outside and tried to find their older sibling(Jimmy) while also trying their best not to panicked and kept on smoothing down their skirt to stay calm and maybe play around with their plastic or ruffled Petticoat
And they would get in a fight by ether getting approached by people older than them or seeing other kids getting picked on so they stepped in to stand up for them
They get nervous easily so they would call the older students names back too but also trying their best to not look whimpy
And would jump onto people's backs and grab onto them by getting up on something if they were trying to fight someone the same age as them(or their older brother) and if they ever fell down they would also pull their hair too
And would jump at people and grab onto them(foxy jumpscare style or just like the guy who jumped at the judge)
Would use their umbrella on them and if not than they would be using their plushie or shoe by hitting or throwing it at them before(maybe picking their stuff up) saying that they’re gonna get Jimmy on them and running away and shouting Jimmys name loudly(maybe that’s how Jimmy found them)
And 7 minutes later Jimmy comes and is very pissed but is very glad that they find Lolita!reader
Anon I fucking love these, please keep sending them in if you want :3 also Gyaru!reader definitely worked at Waffle House at one point because the skills they be using is as if they were going to war again
Also Jimmy hunts those people down and fucking attacks them

At HoochieCon, Black women’s sexual power and agency take center stage
(I did not make this up. This is an article taken from the LA Times
Tumblr media
Event creater and curator Zorine Truly dances at the HoochieCon party on Saturday in Glendale. (Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times)
BY MARTINE THOMPSONJUNE 23, 2023 9:53 AM PT
When taking in the images of Black women that adorn the gallery space at HoochieCon, it’s clear the creator and curator, Zorine Truly, 37, has a major soft spot for hoochie mamas — fly Black women who harness the power of their sexuality and creative expression as they see fit. Photos on the walls of the Glendale event space Junior High depict women with artful multilayered updos reaching for the heavens, big smiles sparkling with gold embellishments, vibrant acrylic nails as imaginative as they are long. Nostalgic portraits of friends turning up before the social media boom are spotlighted along with cherished TV and movie characters.
These women may not have an abundance of money, but they draw on their unique flair, swagger and innovation as a tool to show up authentically and claim space in a society that tells them they should shrink. Truly knows these women — often classified as hoochies — have always been more than a punchline in a movie or a mood-board fixture divorced from their humanity. Hoochies flip narrow, misogynoir-fueled ideas of what a good or respectable or fashionable woman can look like and look damn good while doing it. And as Truly explains to The Times, hoochies — in their many iterations over the decades — have long set the blueprint for popular trends and it’s high time they received their flowers.
“Simply put, hoochies are pioneers — for so many different genres of things,” says Truly, a North Memphis, Tenn., native and self-anointed Hoochie Historian who translates her research on hoochie culture into bite-sized videos. Interspersed with glimpses into her personal life and adventures around Los Angeles (like casually cutting up with Janelle Monaé at their Age of Pleasure party), Truly’s posts range from celebrations of prominent women and rituals in hoochie culture and their undeniable impact on fashion, beauty, art and pop culture to thoughtful deep dives that contextualize significant cultural moments, like Brandy and Monica’s ’90s smash hit “The Boy Is Mine.”

The pull to honor this rich legacy in a major way compelled Truly to launch HoochieCon, a group exhibit featuring mixed-media art and music honoring Black women pioneers at the center of hoochie culture. The exhibit, which was co-organized and hosted by the popular queer community space Junior High last weekend, kicked off with three days of activations. The exhibit’s opening day featured the type of moody bisexual lighting that promises a good time. Attendees from near and far came decked with joyful energy and their interpretation of comfortable hoochie attire, and a stripper pole that was added to the gallery for the special day was put to good use thanks to the trio of dancers (Phoenix, Ziyah, Brooklyn) who blessed the space with their skills.
The intention at the heart of HoochieCon resonated with a range of Angelenos on their own journey of discovering and embracing their authentic self and sexual agency, including Earyn McGee, 28. “I am the oldest daughter in a Black family and definitely felt like I had to perform a certain way of being and show up physically a certain way,” she says, noting the baby steps she’s been taking toward less filtered self-expression now that she’s grown. “Even with my outfit for today, I was a little bit nervous but I was just like, ‘I’m trying to be in theme. This was an idea that I had and I’m just gonna go with it.’ I’m trying to do all the things that would’ve made kid-me happy.”
The next two days had a little something for everyone: a panel discussion moderated by Truly, a dance party (more on that shortly) and an outdoor market featuring Black vendors. Chef Rochelle Tyler of Selah Bakery served up vegan cookies with flavors like Hollaback Girl (banana pudding) and Babycakes (strawberry shortcake), while Cake Chemistry offered its boozy miniature red velvet cakes with Hennessy-infused caramel sauce and cream cheese buttercream. There were beanie purses and clothing designs by Beautiful Soul Childz for the avant-garde fashionista who’s gonna serve a look if nothing else, handcrafted jewelry by Skiin & Tones and Studio Ebunoluwa, Hooch Juice travel tumblers by High Standards Cosmetics to help the hoochies hydrate in style, and more.
With music being so deeply intertwined with hoochie culture, Truly knew she had to have space devoted to everybody coming together, dressing up and having fun on the dance floor. The experience of dancing and moving her body to good music in the company of new and old friends makes her feel tapped into a particular feeling of power. “There’s something powerful about dancing despite everything that’s going on outside and despite what’s in the news or maybe what’s happening when you go back to your house,” Truly says. “There’s freedom in getting together in community and seeing Black faces celebrate, regardless of what circumstance they face every day. There’s power, there’s freedom and there’s happiness in it for me.”
DJ Space Age was on music duty for HoochieCon’s dance-floor celebration and did not disappoint. Bangers from the ’90s and early 2000s that stand the test of time boomed through the speakers, eventually teasing out the most committed of wall huggers to let loose and shake a little something.

Dani Daniels poses for a portrait at Hoochie Con.(Jason Armond/Los Angeles Times)
For Danielle Daniels, 29, the visual nods to the ’90s throughout HoochieCon resonated instantly. “My style of dressing is ’90s style so I love the environment of HoochieCon. The bamboo earrings, the jackets, the clothes and the nails — it’s nice to come out and see a lot of girls with the same culture and idea of things and to be able to express ourselves together as Black women,” says Daniels, who considers Halle Berry and Natalie Desselle’s iconic BAPS characters major hoochie inspo for herself and her best friend. “I wanted to come and celebrate ourselves and the beauty that we bring to beauty culture and everything.”
Tumblr media

As Truly takes in the fruits of her labor, and the community that has formed around her first HoochieCon, she’s mindful to acknowledge the importance of giving respect and reverence to women who have pioneered and “touched popular culture for so long” without reaping the benefits or even receiving credit. “Not only did they pioneer it, they also had to suffer for it,” Truly says. “They had to suffer to wear their hair the way they wanted to. They had to suffer to wear their nails the way they wanted to, and gold teeth, and to be sexually liberated. They had to suffer to shine.”
One day, years later, people will look at images of Truly’s HoochieCon celebration. “What do you hope they take away?” I ask the Hoochie Historian.
“I hope they take away from HoochieCon the importance of being yourself, no matter what people might judge you by,” says Truly, releasing a deep exhale, eyes watering as she processes the idea of HoochieCon reaching people generations into the future. “It’s important to be happy with how you look, how you feel, how you dress, and the choices that you make, and that is the most important thing. I want people, especially Black women, to take away that they can be fully themselves no matter what that looks like and still be worthy of all the good things.”

hi, joo— !! <3 here to say, how much i love the idea of your valentine's day matchup event, it's so sweet and fun, waiting to see who'll get matched with you. i was wondering if i could get a match?
( help, it's the month of valentine's day and i'm still as lonely as ever T~T )
if i'm able to get a slot, here's some information about me!!
TO YOU, little things about raine
preferred group . . . enhypen !
pronouns are she/her or they/them
love language = mainly quality time, then words of affirmation and acts of service
mbti is infp-t & personality description . . .
[ hobbies ] i love writing, basically one of the sole reasons to why i joined tumblr and at times, it's used as my coping mechanism with situations that may occur in life— most of the time, real-life moments and emotions are put into some of my writings. especially poetry. plus! reading, it's always been like that since a young age— and surprisingly, a lot of the books i read are actually crime and a side of thriller/drama. singing, you'll find me karaoking to songs i've heard on the radio or have been stuck in my head while i go to school / do the chores, when i'm bored. painting, i adore painting ( mainly oil-painting because i kind of suck at acrylic . . . ) and art museums are my safe-place, a place where basically unwind from the world as i try connecting with the artwork in front of, trying to understand the emotions put into each stroke of paint or sculpture.
[ daily things ] i'm a night owl, according to my parents + close friends, so some of the things done— i like to do at night example studying, listening to music, playing games, working on small art pieces, basically time for myself. i love star-gazing and looking at the moon. i read a lot of manhwa/webtoons!
[ likes ] i really like visual communication design, biology, architecture and photography ( i always have my camera with me when we go out, and my parents get frustrated when i take pictures of material things example buildings, lakes, trees, leaves instead of people ) VOLLEYBALL, i only started around the last few months of last year but i've been in love ever since— and when i heard i made it into the volleyball team for my grade, i was overjoyed and practically in disbelief when we won the premier league. i wish i could spend time more on volleyball practices, but my dad says it's a no ( sad face ). i love ramyeon so, so, much— it's unhealthy, but i can literally live on it. strawberries, bruh, i love them so much as well, and strawberry picking in the summer, straight from the strawberry farms is a must! i like staying in my room a lot, and spending time on writing or watercolour painting while listening to music by myself. it's basically my go-to break after an exhuasting week. music taste?? it's really broad to be honest, i love r&b though, i like rock-style music as well? ( i think i get that from my dad ) and ballad at the same time ( probably get that from my mum ) and k-pop, obviously, keke.
i also like cold showers. okay— here me out, they're actually nice!!
[ dislikes ] math. i think a lot of other people can agree, it's not that i'm bad at it— it just frustrates me so much, i have no idea why to be honest. ( physic too! i don't know how my dad loves i so much. biology for the win, bruh. ) bugs/spiders/insects/etc. no, ew, just— they scare the heck out of me. hot weather, and living in a really hot place like australia isn't convenient, but hot weather is just icky. deadlines— i'm literally the last person amongst my group of friends to send in my work, and i send it like— minutes before the deadline. oops.
there's nothing much about me, myself, honestly— except, i tend to be more comfortable in isolated areas— like, i like social and group activities but most of the time, i feel more myself when i'm alone. i'm a little quiet to strangers and sometimes it might come off as rude, but once comfortable, sometimes it gets too chaotic it's embarrasing.
in group settings, i sometimes take the leadership roles ( though it depends on the group ) and participate with group activities, and other times, i'm more of the, oh, hey! i'm just going to live, love and laugh.
height — 5'1
appearance wise, i'm a quite short— i have light skin that's been slightly tan on the arms after a trip to the beach around two weeks ago, i think i burnt my nose . . . :[ . . . my hair is really dark brown that it almost looks black, but once met with natural light or sunlight, it turns a way lighter shade of brown for some reason. at the moment, my straight hair is just below my shoulders and is layered with side-bangs. i have 20/20 vision!!! nah, just kidding, i wear glasses T T you'll either find me in sweaters or hoodies. also, knitted vests >>
what i look for in a partner? honestly, i'd like to have a relationship where the each other's comfortableness is mutual— time spent with one another, we don't even have to talk but just comfort with each other's presence. however, i would like to enjoy adventures and memories together, i don't really accept physical affection example hugs, kisses, holding hands because it's so awkward for me but i really want to give the affection, so i want to be freely myself when i'm with that partner that i can open up boundaries and share our interests with acceptance and love. basically wanting a soulmate at this point, why am i like this?? (ㅠ﹏ㅠ)
understanding with one another is what i look for in a partner, where it's equal— meaning, the significant other will love me as i am and i too, will hold them with open arms, i want them to trust me as how i put trust in them. like, trust is a big thing for me in a relationship as well.
i want to big spoon my partner. honestly, i'm a big spoon and spooning others is just so lovely, i like it because even if i don't say the words aloud and how much i love someone close to me, i want to express it through actions, i want them to feel loved and comfort. but being a little spoon is also nice.
ack! too much information, lol??? i'm really curious at who i might match with after all of this info if i get a spot, but thank you anyways, joo.
cutie its okay im lonely too </3 but i would LOVE TO BE FRIENDS omg
Tumblr media
your valentine is... sunghoon!
Tumblr media
listen to: whenever it rains by dept, nason, and amin
omg when u said being comfortable in each other's presence i immediately thought of sunghoon
SOULMATES??? i am thinking soulmates
the chaotic energy you guys have with each other and only each other is so cute
how you spend vday together...
you knew sunghoon got you something for valentine's day, and you had been dying to figure out what it was. him being his own biggest hype man, he had been talking his gift for days, crediting himself with the title of "best gift giver ever," "best boyfriend," "most creative man..." the list goes on.
however, when the time finally came, all of a sudden he seemed to be ashamed of what he got you.
"just open it," he said, handing you a box while not being able to look you in the eyes out of shyness. your eyebrows raised out of curiosity, and with a small smile you opened the box to find a photo album inside. the exterior was decorated with silly stickers, some doodles (he tried), and finally a little "r+s", your initials, at the very top.
"awh, sunghoon.."
"you should fill it up with pictures of us, and only us, okay?"
you opened the album to find dozens of pages already filled- he had printed out pictures he took of the two of you, some candid, some posed, some silly, some cute.
"i can't wait to add many more."

The colourful world of Kirana Haag
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/the-colourful-world-of-kirana-haag/
The colourful world of Kirana Haag
Tumblr media
Whether she’s making art herself or empowering others to create their own, Kirana Haag is having a big impact on Sydney’s art scene.
German-born, Sydney-based artist Kirana Haag knew at an early age that she wanted to live in Australia.
“I remember clearly that when I was ten, I was in geography at school and we had a textbook with a picture of Uluru in it,” she tells QNews.
“The colour was like nothing I’d ever seen and I immediately thought, ‘That’s home.’ I can’t explain it better than to say I had an instant feeling of, ‘I need to live in Australia.’”
It took another 17 years before she got here but her intuition paid off.
Today, Kirana is the owner of her eponymously named business – a venture that sees her produce her own abstract art, take commissions to make bespoke art for clients, and run her very own art school.
“My biggest passions are making art and teaching art,” she says at her premises, a Victorian terrace on Darling Street, Balmain.
Sweeping an arm around the studio, Kirana explains that her art is all about “bold colour fields, expressionism, abstract concepts. I paint experiences. I love when people react to my art with some sort of feeling.”
Many of Kirana’s paintings are on linen (“I love the feeling of linen – it’s so touchable”) but she also produces more traditional canvas works, as well as unconventional mixed media collages.
She uses acrylics, inks, oils and fabrics to create her pieces, which can be viewed at Balmain, as well as her Abbotsford home by appointment and various galleries around Sydney.
In addition to the art she creates during her personal art practice (she produces 20 to 30 works per year, on average) Kirana is very happy to take commissions from clients to produce work within a range of budgets.
“I love doing commission work because it means I can look at the space and tailor the work to it, as well as the client’s wishes,” she says.
“We can see works best for the place, and I can complement the colours which are already in the room.”
Kirana’s European background means she’s very open to working with people who want to furnish their home or offices with art.
“In Europe, it is normal for people to buy original art and hang it in their homes. Like buying a fridge or a car, it’s in the list of the normal household goods,” she says.
“Here, I feel like people often don’t even think about that. It’s not a typical thing to do. It seems like it’s only for the very rich, not the average person.
“It was always a hope of mine that art would become more integrated into Australian society because like poetry, like music, it’s an important part of life. I think that is happening and hope it will continue.”
Kirana is helping to make it happen through her art lessons. She offers one-on-one classes as well as lessons to small groups, and encourages each student to express their emotions through their art.
Art lessons are all the rage right now but unlike the chain art studios where everyone paints the same thing together, Kirana’s method is personalised.
“My approach isn’t a cookie cutter one, where everyone produces the same thing. Even if I’m giving lessons to a group, I encourage each person to do their own thing, and I support them in that,” she says.
“I find everyone has their own style and people are so happy and amazed at what they can create.
“That makes me happy too. It’s a beautiful experience for us both.”

Sneaker Display and Storage: Showcasing Your Sneaker Collection Creatively
Sneaker tips from professional collector Michael Savage of New Canaan, CT
For sneaker enthusiasts, a collection is more than just an accumulation of shoes; it’s a representation of passion, style, and sometimes, even cultural significance.
In fact, we’ve written about the psychology of sneaker collecting and what drives the obsession. But once you’ve got the sneaker bug, it’s important to take care to protect the soles of your collection and display with panache.
But with great collections comes the responsibility of proper display and storage.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you showcase your sneakers creatively while keeping them protected. Sneaker tips from professional collector Michael Savage of New Canaan, CT
Shelving Options
Shoe racks: A classic choice, shoe racks come in various materials (wood, metal, plastic) and sizes. Opt for open shelves for better visibility and choose a sturdy rack that can accommodate the weight of your collection.
Floating shelves: These space-saving shelves mount directly to the wall, creating a clean and modern look. They’re ideal for displaying prized sneakers or limited-edition pairs.
Stackable boxes: Clear plastic boxes offer dust protection while allowing you to see your sneakers. They’re stackable, making them suitable for smaller spaces.
Sneaker display cases: Invest in acrylic display cases for your most valuable or collectible sneakers. These protect them from dust, moisture, and UV rays, and their elevated design adds a touch of sophistication.
Lighting Techniques
Natural light: If possible, position your display area near a window to utilize natural light. However, avoid direct sunlight as it can cause fading and discoloration.
LED strip lights: Strategically placed LED strip lights can dramatically enhance your display. Choose warm white or daylight bulbs for an even and natural-looking illumination.
Spotlights: Use spotlights to highlight specific sneakers in your collection, creating a focal point and adding depth to your display.
Protecting Your Sneakers
Regular cleaning: Wipe down your sneakers with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Use sneaker cleaning solutions specifically designed for the materials of your shoes.
Shoe trees: Invest in cedar shoe trees to help maintain the shape of your sneakers and absorb moisture.
Stuffing: When not on display, loosely stuff your sneakers with acid-free tissue paper to help them retain their shape and prevent creases.
Controlled environment: Ideally, store your sneakers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Avoid storing them in extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, as this can damage the materials.
Creative Display Ideas
Theme your display: Group your sneakers by color, brand, or even inspiration (e.g., sports legends, music artists).
Incorporate memorabilia: Surround your sneakers with related items like posters, jerseys, or tickets to create a unique and personal display.
Get artistic: Consider using mannequins or sneaker stands to create dynamic poses for your sneakers.
Think outside the box: Repurpose vintage suitcases, crates, or even skateboards as unique display shelves.
By following these tips and letting your creativity flow, you can transform your sneaker collection from a simple storage solution into a visually stunning and personalized showcase of your passion.
At the same time, you’ll see the financial evolution of your sneaker collection continue to grow.

Music Monday #229: aespa - Better Things release: August 2023 genre: Kpop cw: little bit of flashing, an "it's complicated" body image warning *
Oh I know, it's been a hot minute since I did one of these, hasn't it? You know you missed me and my Kpop nonsense. ;)
Sure, it's way too late to declare a song of the summer, at least up here in the northern hemisphere, but if you were looking for a light summer bop, you could do worse than this light late-summer release from aespa. That up-tempo beat combined with fairly simple lyrics offered in mellow 2-4-part harmony means this requires an earworm warning - gods know I've caught myself humming this at all hours and often can't resist singing along when it comes up on my stations and playlists.
The official music video has a definite tropical vibes flare, even when they're swallowed by the giant fish. The whole thing is a bit lush - from tropical plants to decorative costumes to special effects to fun dance moves, every watch-through I find myself getting caught by something else. The short skirts, the long nails, the acrylic puzzle Ningning's playing with and that we've seen before, the whale sounds at the end. How any of them are supposed to seriously do anything with those decora nails is a whole ass thing all right. XD
From the start, aespa has been a lore group, although this video feels less like story and more like rest. The song is self-referential rather than anything to do with the hero version of aespa or their virtual world counterparts, although considering they step through their fridge into another world, one could perhaps argue the fact that the video is indeed about their hero personas. It's a dream, of course, complete with being swallowed by a giant fish whose insides are ... a ball pit? Well, no one's ever said dreams have to make a whole lot of sense. A fancy goldfish is perhaps a strange choice of avatar to call the girls back to work, but then again....
In addition to the music video, there are also two official performance versions (performance video and performance stage), the latter of which in particular puts me in my gender feels. And then, if that wasn't enough, last week they released an animated version which is drawn in a different style than previous animations, but just as full of magic or maybe just virtual reality.
"Better Things" and its remixes are out now wherever you like to get your Kpop fix! This is no longer their most recent release, but ZOOM ZOOM is going to have to wait a bit. ;)
* here's the thing - body image is a huge problem in Kpop as idols are held to sometimes ridiculous beauty standards. Women especially must be beautiful - slender body lines, long hair, flawless skin - but it's an incredibly thin line between acceptable and not. Aespa in general and Karina in particular have a history of getting a lot of shit from fans for being on the wrong sides of the line and while I feel a certain way about warning about body image when the girls are just being themselves, Karina feels especially tiny in this video. Believe me, I'm well aware that outward appearance is not a way to measure health, but I also know body image is a whole tangled Thing, so do what you need to do to take care of yourself, lovelies. Want to see Music Monday deep dives more often? Sponsor a song selection! For the low, low price of one (1) KoFi, I'll write up the song of your choice. ANY song of your choice. Yes, even that one that's been played to death. Yes, your obscure faves too. With sponsors, I can stop skipping weeks and falling further and further behind in the releases! Sponsor a current CB for the next open Music Monday slot or sponsor a throwback for a Thursday feature! But seriously, if you've been enjoying my selections and analyses, we (me and the foster kittens) would love a KoFi in thanks. DW | Twitter | Mastodon | Bluesky | Ko-fi | Patreon | Discord | Twitch

2 do '23
It was interesting (Amusing? Sad? Revealing?) 2022. I already took the time to look back at what I did (or did not) do last year.
So now I'm going to make another list for this year. That way I can look back and see how much (or little) I was able to actually get done. If I survive '23 that is.
So, with out further fanfare, here is my to-do list for '23
Continue my travels. See even more new places. Find new waterfalls and visit more hiking trails.
Try glamping. I love nature (see above) but I'm not a camping on the hard ground kind of girl. I think glamping might be the best of both of worlds.
Go to an Lgbt event. Just to see what it's like for sure. Preconceived notions aside.
Get the makeover I didn't get last year. If not that then at least some kind of beauty advice or consultation.
Get a set of Acrylic nails. I can actually have nails now that I'm away from restaurants!
The most practical item. I'm at home way to much but have seen to many things go wrong with the house itself. Time to get those things repaired.
Try kayaking. See if maybe that's a hobby I can find a bit of passion for.
Play music again. Put out some ads or answer an ad for a drummer. How about as part of a cool all womens music group!
Play golf again. Last year playing in a tournament or a league was the goal. This year's goal is just to play at all. That would be so nice. Health issues are preventing that right now.
Give a speech or presentation. Last year it was a T.V. show. How about this time we do something live.
The two biggest things though may be the most difficult. But the complete opposite of each other.
One is find love again. I know I'll never stop loving my wife-ish and there is no bigger dream I have then to reconcile with her. But after 8 years I get the feeling that might not happen for us. But that's not by my choice.
But there is one place where I can have my H.E.A.
Fiction.
So I'm going to be finishing a book I've started writing.
Yep. A BOOK.
I actually started it last year and am about 130 pages into the rough draft. I haven't worked on it in a few months but I'm going to get it done this year.
The working title is "Time Forever Lost" and will be about a 90% autobiographical account of my life and especially the last 7+ years.
It's only 90% factual. The last 10% I plan on giving the "me" character in the book a romance book style ending.
Because that's the only way it might ever happen.
But we will see what this entry looks like a year from now to find out for sure.

Generic Christmas Gift Ideas
When looking for gifts for people you don't know very well, it can be difficult to think of a gift idea. The person you're buying for may already have everything they could ever want or need, so it can be difficult to come up with something original. It is also important that the gift be useful and not just a decoration.
Budget-friendly holiday gifts
Gifts for your family members do not have to break the bank. There are countless affordable ideas for holiday gifts that you can give. One great option is to draw names and give gifts based on the number of people. Another great idea is to get small, inexpensive items for your family members that will make their holidays special. Giving thoughtful gifts is better than giving expensive ones because they have more meaning.
If you want to give a gift that will be used and cherished for decades to come, consider giving an ornament. There are ornaments for almost everything imaginable, from snowflakes to animals. If you are having trouble finding an ornament for a particular person or group, check out Etsy. You can get ornament designs from local artists who tend to be extremely busy during the holidays, so get a head start by ordering online.
Another great idea is a guided journal. Using a journal will help you practice mindfulness and reduce stress. There are prompts on each page to keep you on track. You can also get a Christmas-themed enamel pin from Big League Pins.
Gifts that make a lasting impression
If you want to give a gift that will make a lasting impression, go for something a little different this year. A gift card is a perfect option. This gift never has to be returned, and it has a variety of uses. Many people love chocolate and treats for the holidays, but the best way to make your gift more special is to choose something that's unique and not widely available.
The holiday season is a time of togetherness and celebration, but it can also bring a lot of stress. Many families and friends have their own preferences and styles, which can make gift-giving a challenge. You need to be creative when looking for the right gift for each person, and unique gifts will make the most lasting impression.
Gifts that stand the test of time
A Bose portable speaker is a great gift for any music lover. It packs a punch with its powerful bass and balanced sound. It's also durable enough to play loudly in the outdoors. Whether you're looking for a gift for your man or a family member, a Bose portable speaker is the perfect option. This gift is also good for budget-minded men because it falls into the category of things that men want but don't want to spend a lot of money on.
Find more Unique Christmas Gift Ideas.
Gifts that last a lifetime
If you want to buy a gift that will be treasured for years, you can't go wrong with a Christmas hamper. Whether the recipient loves the outdoors or is in need of a little pampering, these hampers are filled with treats and goodies for the holidays. They can include Moet Chandon champagne, scented L'Occitane soaps, Mulberry Silk eye masks, artisanal snacks, and chocolates. These hampers can range in size and price but are sure to be appreciated.
Buying a new task bag can be a practical gift for a busy person. This bag can fit many things and won't require constant adjustment. This model comes in a trendy blue, which will bring a pop of color to every trip. A paint-by-number kit for a birth month flower is also a nice idea. The kit includes a canvas, water-based acrylic paints, brushes, and helpful instructions.

People have always tried to teach me lessons like “love your family” or “get motivated”. But the full saying is “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb,” and getting motivated to do something you don’t want to do is kind of hard when you’ve got executive dysfunction and depression and you’ve just discovered a new show about pirates. It can be harder to find a life lesson that you’ve learned over the years than you think; I still haven’t really thought of a solid one even as I’m writing this. I’m not trying to present myself as lazy or pathetic, oh no. I’m only human, though. And here is what I know, the one solid life lesson that I know is true for absolutely everyone: creativity is the heart of humanity.
Humans, as a species, are wired for creativity. It’s been apparent for as long as anthropology has existed as a science. Cave paintings, mythology, poems, stories, carvings, music! Music is my favorite example. It’s something we don’t have evidence of -- cavemen didn’t exactly write sheet music -- but we know they made music because we have cave paintings of people dancing around a fire together. We have the remains of ancient drums and instruments, too decayed to use but undeniably musical. For as long as we have had groups of people living amongst each other, we have had art.
I’ve always been an artist. My earliest surviving work that I know of is a small handmade book I put together from a kit, filled with drawings and demonstrations in child-scrawl, little foam shapes fitted to look like people. There’s a page that’s just a picture of a wheat field glued onto the paper with the word “WHEAT” written in thin blue marker. It’s my favorite page. At some point, though, I started taking it seriously. My mom bought me a book that was supposed to teach me how to draw like a mangaka, or manga illustrator. It helped somewhat, with proportions and anatomy, but the anime style didn’t last long. I can’t say exactly what happened during my journey to where I am now, all the years blend together. But looking back at my old art, there’s no doubt that I’ve improved.
Art has always been there for me. When I’m unmotivated, I try to write a little bit at a time, or doodle in a spiral notebook, or even turn to character creation games on the internet for some inspiration. I write songs, I draw anthropomorphic animals, I buy canvases and acrylic paint and brushes. So why do the canvases gather dust?
The unfortunate truth that I’ve come to know is that there is little room for creativity in modern American society. Sure, there are architects and musicians and filmmakers, and they make a lot of money. But it also takes a lot of hard work and time to become successful. You can’t just go from a Soundcloud artist to a chart-topper in one day. You have to reach out, sign to a label, do what they tell you makes money. None of that work that they told you to do will ever be your best work. It doesn’t come from the heart, it comes from the corporate pocket. Yeah, you’re successful, but are you happy? Are you making your best work?
Creativity these days is not for fun. It’s always for money. If it doesn’t bring in the cash, it’s not worth anyone’s time. And I think that’s complete and utter garbage. Cavemen didn’t make cave paintings for money, they made them for fun. I want to return to the Stone Age if only it would mean that we were happier and doing things for ourselves. I think more people should create just for the sake of it. Not for money, or for their fans or bosses. Creation for creation. That’s the way to live.
