Finally decided to do a TVD rewatch now that the 'verse is complete. Since I know how everything ends I thought it would be interesting to see how I react with that knowledge. Curious if my feelings might change about characters, ships, storylines etc. (obviously I am fully aware there's going some bias).

Adding my thoughts after I complete the half-way mark of each season (there is simply too many episodes to do a recap of each one). I am talking to the void mostly here but feel free to leave comments, thoughts on my posts for those who still follow me or just find this post. S1 Episodes 1-11

I am loving the dark atmosphere of the first season, feeling so much nostalgia! Nice to go back in time to when vampires were scary on this show. That's not really criticism because every supernatural show goes through this. The big bad must always be upped as it goes on but it was nice when the stakes were lower and the mythos was being developed.

Damon makes me feel so uncomfortable so far... I know he was the 'villian' for most of the beginning of the season but his treatment of Vicki and Caroline is just so predatory and gross. Which brings me to...

WHY HAS NO ONE GIVEN CAROLINE A GOD DAMN VERVAIN NECKLACE ALREADY!!! Stefan and Elena both know Damon was using her (and they know damn well he hasn't stopped). Her Mom has the vervain to give her and just has not for no reason!! GET AWAY FROM HER ALREADY! I got so mad when Damon was compelling her AGAIN in the 10th episode. I'm so glad she outlives them all, justice for my baby!

I'm sorry but Stefan is so creepy and self-righteous in the beginning, I remembered this but did not remember how bad it was. Also he did not need to kill Vicki, that pissed me off. I don't think it did as much when I first watch this (mind you that was literally 14+ years ago) but just knowing how freely everyone neck-snaps around here it was bullshit. His one cool moment remains when he told Logan he can't walk in the sun. The manipulative way he used Elena’s adoption to get her to forgive him had me rolling my eyes (then of course she used it against Jenna to get out of trouble lol).

I can't remember who the other vampire is who turned Logan, I'm thinking its Pearl's henchman but yeah I don't remember that part. I also didn't remember the crystal so I like that some of this is like a 'mystery' again.

I did remember that I thought Tyler was such a dick in the first season and yeah confirmed. Though now I remembered his Dad was an abusive piece of shit. Still, fuck Tyler for now.

Alaric looks so different I don't hate him (yet).

I still hate Matt #bias

The progression of Bonnie realizing her powers has been well done, again nice to just see the simple magic again. (Stefan totally wanted to bang Sheila back in the day... maybe they did)

Jeremy just met Anna and I still love them, I wish they got more time. They were the only 'ship I like in this season when it first aired.

The Bonnie, Elena and Caroline friendship is nice but I am annoyed they haven't done more to protect Caro from Damon. Especially when she doesn't know what's going on and they do (though Bonnie only just got all the deets). This might be magnified by my love of Caroline I admit but I hate the prop-y way she's being used so far.

I kinda rolled my eyes at the whole Katherine/Damon/Stefan stuff before Elena knew they were vamps because OMG Stefan is 17(!!!) Does no one thinks it's weird he's like "it was a long time ago" A LONG TIME AGO LIKE WHEN YOU WERE 12?! They should have made him at least 20, just bothers me.

I liked that not every vampire had a daylight ring and it was more of a novelty. That is something that could have stuck more in the later seasons.

Lines that made me laugh:

Caroline: Yeah, Elena wasn't so lucky today. It's only because you missed summer camp. God, I don't know how you're ever going to learn the routines. (Bonnie offers to help her) I guess we can put her in the back. (all right in front of Elena lmao oh Caroline never change)

Caroline: So, Elena...how long do you think this fight with Stefan's gonna last? Is it...like a permanent thing? (eyes on the prize baby! lol)

Stefan: (imitating Damon) Now that the secret society of vampire haters is off our back, I can go back to my routine of how can I destroy Stefan’s life this week. (never gets old!)

Damon: *shoots Logan with wooden bullets* Payback's a bitch, isn't it? (all in the delivery here lmao kudos to Ian)

3rd year, her and her brother got into teyvat university through an overseas scholarship, met Xiao via Aether. Kind of chill with each other. One of the few people Xiao actually enjoys talking to. I mean, who doesn't like Lumine?? Mutual friends with Keqing, so she knows the deets between both you and Xiao (she sees his priv tweets through Aether lol)

Hu Tao — Business major

3rd year, been friends with Xiao since their first year, never fails to annoy him constantly. Mutual friends with Xiangling, Xingqiu and Chongyun, so she knows about your plan to romance him, indirectly tries to help you by constantly annoying him about you and him, a great wing(wo)man. Down bad for a certain practicing lawyer 🫢

Venti — Literature major

3rd year, been friends with Xiao since highschool, the friend that Xiao is lowkey greatful for, but will kill himself before he admits it. The second person who Xiao accepted to follow his priv, considering how long they've known each other, and how well Venti knows Xiao, more than he lets on 👀

Childe — Criminology major

3rd year, been friends with Xiao ever since he decided to sit next to the ginger during one of their classes in their 2nd year. The worst decision he's ever made in his entire life, because now the ginger decides to annoy him in every way possible. The last straw was when Childe said he finds Xiao's dad hot as fuck. Like Hu Tao, Childe indirectly tries to help you by constantly annoying Xiao about you and him

Ok this very much depends on the au.

Flowers is part of a larger verse that they just want to be with each other and fighting against the evil blue fairy that trys to tell them that their 30+ year marriage and that their granddaughter's love with Jiminy is less because of the blood curse of Granny and Ruby's have because Blue is a liar and a bigot (yes yes i love the theory fight me). While also having fights with Snow and David about Jiminy and their lack of seeing the gray morality of things (they still mostly have their black and white thinking).

In my supernatural verse, the goal is to try and figure out if they could pick up where they left off so many years ago or not.

In the ot3 verse where Joan is married to Geppetto in the EF and Granny in Storybrooke, it changes because Joan is in love with both and hates anyone to tell her what her and Granny shared under the curse wasn't love and wasn't real (and Granny will most likely kill you with her crossbow if you try)

I think Granny is more the Planner of the two so she is more anxious about things because in the EF Joan was...not well and in Storybrooke that doesn't disappear especially when Rumple brings back magic, in fact it's just different.

Joan is more the live in the moment because of [Spoiler], which doesn't worsen and only gets slightly better.

Adding in Geppetto (for the one au) it varies depending on who he's talking to because he wants to live in the moment as they mostly did in the EF but it drives Granny bonkers so he has a bit more sense of to plan things becsuse sometimes the fight with the older shewolf is not worth it.

I love that Marisha was FREAKING OUT at the one sleeping guard that she did not account for when going up the tower.

Wow, this is going south fast. While Jester charming the guard was clever and 100% her, they are leaving traces galore, and that was before Caleb overkilled it with that other guard.

Also the image of Beau preparing a dagger and 2 vials of acid behind the sleeping guard is dark, I love it so much. I feel like I felt that episode where they stole a pirate boat by accident.

Jester, hiding the tears in her eyes because she's hearing her friend murder everyone in the room but she's still talking to the charmed guard :"Yeah, they just like to have some fun sometimes..." I'm glad everyone is going with the fucked-up atmosphere.

Oh, wow, Beau, that was horrifying. I laughed so much, they were just so horrified and amused by the acid plan that took wayyyyy too long to kill the poor guy !

Can you share how you have your Wolfstar fics spreadsheet set up? I saw your post about it yesterday and it sounds like such a good way to keep track of fics 👀

ahhhh of course!! I'd be more than happy to walk you through how I've set mine up to track the fics I read. just a warning that this is going to make me sound like the biggest fattest nerd but I just love spreadsheets okay? okay?????

I have three tabs: READ, READING (WIPs I'm up to date with + whatever else I'm reading at that moment) and TBR.

I update the grid once or twice a week just by scrolling through My History on ao3, and doing this also allows me to go back in and leave comments/kudo's on a fic if I haven't yet.

it takes me about 20 mins at most if I read a lot that week or added a lot of fics to my marked for later, but usually it's max 10 mins to update the whole thing

let me get into the deets of columns, filters etc below the break..

for READ, I have my columns set up like this:

I filter these by date finished, most recent on top. I pretty much only look at this tab when I stumble across a fic and I'm like "have I read this before?" (although I do re-read stuff a lot) or when I'm reading all of one author's works I'll filter by their username to see which ones I've already read

I also have another column behind this called "Favourites" where I just put an X if I really loved a fic, so I can easily filter by those if someone asks me for recommendations!

for READING, I have my columns set up like this:

the same but with a progress column, and a last updated column. the top one here is a WIP I'm currently reading, hence the in progress tag. I'll change this to up to date once I'm... well, up to date

the two below that are WIP's that I'm subscribed to/reading. these both had new chapter updates in the last week that I've seen and read, so I'm now up to date with them again

the bottom one here is a WIP I'm subscribed to/reading that had a new chapter update recently, but I have yet to read the new chapter, hence the catch up tag

the "last updated" column here is just for my own reference in case I fall behind (like on my holiday for example, I didn't read any new chapter updates for like a month so it was nice to know where I'd left off)

for TBR, I have my columns set up like this:

I update this tab about once a month (deleting fics I have since read, adding new fics that have been recommended to me or that I have marked for later on ao3). I only update the word and chapter count when I first put a new fic in so most of these will be out of date for WIP fics

I usually order this tab alphabetically, but I also filter by word count if I'm craving something short & sweet or a longer fic. I also just do a random number generator to pick something to read sometimes if I'm feeling crazy

WIP's are marked in yellow, because I love reading WIP's so sometimes I'll be more likely to choose them. "Note 1" is marked with an X for fics over 150k words, "Note 2" is just any other random stuff I want to write down tbh? Like if a certain person recommended it to me, or if it's discontinued, or just anything at all. ASAP is marked with an X for fics I want to read sometime soon

the main tags column is literally just my brain dump re: what the fic is about, either taken from the summary or the tags of the fic. if I'm looking for a coffee shop AU for example I'll just filter for that and I can see my options and pick one

I don't have a ship tab because I pretty much only read Wolfstar and multi-ship Marauders fics, so there's that.

I mostly use mine to filter for what I want to read, but it's also nice sometimes to just have the record :) and to realise how absolutely unhinged I am sometimes when I read a 300k word fic in two days or realise I've read almost every single Slytherin!Sirius fic possible

Okay! So!

I’ve will be back from a six day, 1044 mile journey tomorrow evening, I will be exhausted because no it was not in any sensical straight line and was a total indulgence trip 👀 more of that to come later.

But I will be catching up and posting opens and starters as soon as I am up for it, very likely on Friday because the muses are quite loud after their own holiday from the dash. Just letting you all know that I will be back and I can only apologise for that!

this is such a great episode!

for anyone who hasn't listened yet — it deals with some heavy things including food addiction and eating disorders, death, and more, so anyone who wants to check it out should be aware it's about richard's own history and his self-identified "failures", and it's not particularly light-hearted or funny even though it's endearing and inspiring in many ways

i really appreciate his honesty and how carefully he speaks. he has every right to be angry — with his father leaving, with his relationship to food and shame, with the ever-present confines of modern masculinity making life so lonely for men — but he never seems to be. he just cares about being the best, healthiest version of himself. and i appreciate that he doesn't talk at people, preach, act like he knows more or best; he just knows what he knows all while seeking to always be learning more. i really appreciate him!

i've never heard of a podcast by tailors, how interesting! i listened to the episode with alex and it was really sweet! i'll post this in case anyone else wants to check it out :)

TOTALLY AGREE about jon pointing! his comedic timing, his facial expressions, he is just too hilarious — even though...can i just say...why was that old ass man playing a uni student X_X

anyways — i knew him from plebs!! that's quite a famous itv2 series, so you should check it out and see if you like it! i love tom basden ugh and if you check my non-panel shows masterpost i have live at the moth club and he does standup in ep1!

i am somewhat familiar with it as someone who likes to watch some of the nextup specials (alistair barrie was one i enjoyed recently!) and tries to keep abreast of the festival nominees & winners, but i don't have as much time as i'd like to really weed out my favourites only because there isn't enough time in the day and i'm already trying to watch 100 things a day 🥲

one thing i find funny is how i pay more attention to who would do well on tv opposed to who is just GOOD. like, i didn't get john kearns until stopped thinking about him in the context of dictionary corner and started acknowledging his written set as a very, very specific piece of work that really shouldn't be disassembled and consumed in morsels. but i do see my interest in — and potentially my preference for — panel shows reflected in some of the circuit guys i like, such as alasdair beckett-king, huge davies, larry david. i just know they would kill panel show world if they were pushed properly :')

i find that i like standup a lot more live than i do on screen — which i think a lot of comedians would understand!

TDC Facebook Update

This post is to educate and warn people only, not to cause or start or renew any drama.

I was upset when I made my other post yesterday, and still am. Thank you for everyone who signal boosted and gave me some insight on 'why' this may be happening. This franchise has meant a lot for me, kickstarting my art and having so many fun, positive experiences in a fandom. So, this is a really bitter pill to swallow.

The Facebook page I've mentioned is called 'The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance' [and there are some emojis next to it.]

They have gone private, so that's at least a relief but if you were in the group like me before it turned the way it did, here is a warning;

Trigger warnings for; war, racism, anti-semitism and fascism beyond this point.

This page has become a very far right, anti-Semitic, racist, and fascist and the admins don't care. I've send some reports and after a send like three there was a sudden new update to the page that 'no one was allowed to report posts.'

They post racist and other horrible rhetoric plastered over TDC characters. Make comparisons to real life wars and invasions to the ones in the show and laugh about it in the comments. One person commented that they 'couldn't wait for the liberal snowflakes to find this post and get upset about it'

There are endless distasteful comments about real life wars. Making posts that 'skeksis are quicker than xxx-army' or comparing people from invaded countries to podlings but then backtracking because 'at least podlings had an enough spine to fight back and resist.'

There have been made pictures of people photoshopping garthim over tanks. Tanks that were invading countries and caused real life deaths.

And a few of their members compared BIPOC to animals so... yeah. Disgusting shit all around.

There are also a lot of anti-vaxx posts, with the whole brainwashing, money grabbing schtick. Adding vaccine logo's or text over the draining scenes and comparing skeksis to the government.

This is literally how a lot of active members in that group think. Also I hope you don't mind I added your tags;

I feel this is becoming more and more true, sadly. And I know a lot of fans of this show are younger, and I hate to see them fall for these tricks. These 'memes' aren't jokes. They are cruel and disgusting.

It sadly has seem to be gotten worse. At least on Facebook. I also know some were active on Twitter but I've got those blocked before I saw anything.

I know a lot of people have their art / cosplays posted in that group. So my advice is to remove those. It has become private so that may become harder now. Just be careful out there, don't go into this weird fucked up rabbit hole people in that group are trying to dig.

You’ve Got Mail! 🍒 Taichi Nanao

i’ve been sitting on this wip for monthssss... so glad i finally have it in a place where i feel a-ok to publish it!

“Reader!”

The voice was distant, but your shoulders relaxed as you recognized it instantly. That was just the kind of vibe Taichi Nanao emitted, the same energetic, carefree attitude he carried with him wherever he went, even though you noticed other students giving him annoyed glares as he sprinted through the sidewalk and to your side. “Reader! Hey hey hey hey hey, Reader! You’re not gonna believe this!”

“Um, hey! Scream in my ear again like that and I’ll go deaf before you even spill the deets.” Despite your teasing, you smiled as he caught up with your stride and sheepishly apologized. Your best friend’s energy was infectious, and you loved to see his sweet, goofy grin. “So, spill! What’s going on, Tai?”

He looked like a kicked puppy when you scolded him, but the second you asked you could see his face light up in high resolution real time. “Dude, seriously, you won’t believe this. It’s so cool! So I was about to nod off in Chemistry, it’s so hard, you know, but then my phone got a text, so I opened it, and then Mr. Kenta called on me for a question and I was so scared he was about to grab my phone before I even read anything, so I kinda beefed it and totally blanked but turns out, he just wanted someone to answer the question so I just passed.” He was breathless from his sprint to catch up with you, but spoke so quickly, you just knew he was over the moon about something. “Anyways, I look at my phone and, so, you know Omi, right?”

“Dorm mom guy? The beefy guy with the scar that makes cookies?”

“Yeah! We’re roomies! So earlier that day our director Izumi, we just call her Director, she’s such a cutie, she went to check the Mankai mailbox because our plays were already pretty cool but ever since the Winter guys creamed God Troupe we got suuuuper popular, it’s sick! We get so much fan mail now! I mean, I’ve only gotten four letters, and one of those doesn’t count because it was from my parents, and two of those are kinda iffy because they were addressed to the entire Autumn troupe, but like! Director finds this envelope addressed to me! Taichi Nanao! Not Autumn Troupe, me! So she gives it to Omi ‘cause he’s a total bro and he texted me-” He put on a fake deep voice and puffed out his chest here- “he texted me, ‘Hope you enjoyed the dumplings I made, blah blah blah, something about homework, you have mail!’ You know, because he saw how stoked I was with getting fan mail even though one of them was from my parents and two of them were for the troupe, not me, but anyways I was like, ‘Dude, that’s so awesome, you GOTTA take a pic’ and he was like ‘Uhhh, aren’t you in class right now’ and I was like ‘Yeah, if you count lunch as a class, and those dumplings were great’ and then I added a few dumpling emojis so I could distract him from the fact I was texting him at 2:46 in the afternoon. And I guess it worked because then he sends me this picture of a little white envelope, it’s kind of wide and short like those money envelopes, and I’m, like!” His mouth dropped into a wide O with a dramatic gasp. 

“So I’m sitting in Chem and I’m totally about to explode, it’s so exciting! I can’t even work, I’m just so into it, and I can’t resist the suspense until I get home, so I text Omi, ‘Do you want to be my best friend forever?’ And then he’s like, ‘Suuuuure? What do you need?’ And I’m like, ‘You KNOW what I need, I can’t stand it anymore, can you open the letter and take a picture of it?????’ And he’s like ‘Are you sure you don’t want to wait-‘ and I’m like ‘YES I’M SURE, open it open it open it! Please!!’

“Aren’t you worried he’ll read the letter?” You asked, and swallowed the worry rising in your throat. “Don’t you want to be the only guy to read it?”

“Oh, pffffft.” Taichi waved a hand in the air carelessly. “No worries! Omi’s awesome, way too chill to do that, and no offense to him, but he’s really oblivious. He’s a college kid and super sage, but he’s kind of stupid about that sort of thing. He’d probably just open the letter and then go back to cross-stitching or cooking or whatever he was doing at the moment.”

“Seriously, every time you talk about him I’m always shocked by how motherly that guy is.”

“Right? We all call him Ma. But so! He sends me a picture of the inside and- and guess what it was!”

You had a few working theories, one of them much likelier than the others, and you feared admitting to that one. So instead, you said, “You won a contest?”

“Nope!”

“Not even one of those 1,000,000th visitor contests that pop up on your computer?”

“Hey! I only clicked on those once, and I was like seven, I’m not gonna do it again! Guess again!”

“Scholarship information?”

“I’m a second-year.”

“Tax returns?”

Taichi gave you the most exhausted look he could muster. “Seriously?”

“Sorry, sorry, joking,” you said. “Was it a love letter?”

“Bingo!” He beamed and wiggled in delight, which was adorable, but despite his behavior you only felt dread. He swiped through his phone’s photo library. “Look! I have it saved. Look at her handwriting, it’s all loopy and pretty. That’s gotta mean she’s a total hottie, right?”

He shoved his phone into your hands. The letter was on crisp notebook paper with hearts doodled on the margins and a glittery magenta-gloss kiss planted on the bottom, and you looked down at it with disdain, but Taichi elbowed you, egging you on. You wanted nothing more than to put it away, pretend it was nothing, but he watched you so expectantly, and you didn’t want to hurt him, so you held the phone up and read. 

Dear Taichi,

I’m a huge fan of your work. That’s putting it lightly, I just love to watch you act, it puts a smile on my face, and it reminds me that I love you. I know we haven’t met, but I wish we did, and I hope we can. I want to be the girl you look for in the crowd, I want your eyes on me and only me. You’re incredibly talented and every time you step onto the stage it’s like I understand everything about what makes you unique. You’re so meek and when you get to snap it’s so amazing, and I’m reminded just how hot you are, you’re so adorably introverted and shy.

You glanced up from the phone at Taichi. He was giggling to himself, eyes shut tight with his mouth clamped into a curved line like he just ate sour candy. 

“She said I’m hoooot,” he sang. “Heheheh! I knew I’d get a girlfriend this year!”

You gave a low-effort snicker in response. He’s not shy at all, you thought bitterly. Before we were even friends, he kept pursuing me because he’s so outgoing, not meek. You don’t know him at all, and I hate that you think you do. Despite the gnarls growing in your heart, you continued.

It’s so cute, whenever you’re onstage I don’t even care about the play anymore, all I see is you. I’m totally captivated whether you’re in a hospital bed or in the yakuza. I envy Wolf and his motorcycle so much, I want your arms around me, no one else. I adore everything about you, I want to go with you everywhere. I can’t wait for next Autumn, because that means I get to see the boy that captured my heart and made it his own, and I can just eat you up.

Are you free next Saturday? I hope so, because I am. At 5 I’ll be at this Italian restaurant on the corner of Manor and Cateye Lane. Please go out with me, I can’t bear the thought of pouring all my feelings to you in this letter and getting stood up. I even attached my number to this letter so you can talk to me beforehand. I won’t tell you my name until we meet, though. So until then, I’ll just sign off like this;

Love, your secret admirer.

You sighed. The second you guessed it was a love letter, you were jealous, and you knew it, but the worst part was being unable to tell if the admirer was really good enough for Taichi or not. It ate you alive, made everyone seem like never enough, and you had no idea if your dislike stemmed from being a caring friend or a possessive one.

You’d really love to be something more than a friend, though, and every time you met up with Taichi it warmed your heart. He was pure sunshine and joy, and livened every dull class or boring walk. He was the guy that you could talk to for hours, and you did; you couldn’t even begin to count the nights where you both called late into the night talking about this or that, searching for comfort or a distraction or just a laugh. Taichi understood your insecurities and made them feel miniscule, because despite how awful you felt, he was still your closest friend, wasn’t he? And you’d do the same for him any day of the week. You remember being his only confidant when he sabotaged Autumn Troupe’s first performance, whispering advice and support as he cried tears of guilt laced with apologies. On closing night you reunited with him backstage and gave him the tightest hug you could muster. “See? You fixed it,” you said as the actor’s rush died down. “You did the right thing, and I couldn’t be prouder of you.”

This was why the admirer pissed you off. You glanced back at the looped print. “So adorably introverted and shy.” Taichi was the one that followed you around even when you wouldn’t give him the time of day, and his dreams of popularity pushed him to constantly meet new people. The stage was for expression, not confessions, and it disgusted you that some stranger had the audacity to say she knew everything about your longtime best friend.

Maybe your protectiveness made you a monster. Taichi had the right to pursue whoever he wanted, and so did this girl. But you worried for him. You didn’t have the courage to tell him the one secret you hid, and now you were paying the price. The fear that this girl would break his heart was unfathomable, and you never wanted to hear him cry again because someone else played him like a fiddle. 

But she was the one that asked him out, and his smile still hadn’t faded. 

“Adorbs,” you lied. “What do you think? About her, I mean?”

“She sounds soooo cute,” he said dreamily. The tips of his ears poked out of his hair, matching the cherry red dye as he spoke. “She wants to go to an Italian restaurant. That’s so classy and-!” He went wide-eyed. “Wait. Reader. Oh my god. What if we share the same plate of pasta. What if we pull a Lady and the Tramp?! That’d be so romantic. Man, I want it to be Saturday already!”

“Do what feels right, I guess. I mean, you only know her by a letter, right? I doubt you’ll get that far that fast.”

“Yeah, but still, it’s a date! I’m gonna go on a daaaaaate. A date a girl asked me out on. I’m so psyched!”

You nodded as you turned a corner into the entertainment district of Veludo Way. Mankai’s dorms were located around the outside of the sector, away from the glitzy theaters but still in the vicinity of any stray tourists. Somehow, all the play programmes ended up on these streets, crumpled and strewn by the wind despite the center being near spotless.

The entire time, Taichi was geeking out about his date while you tried your damndest to stay supportive. He didn’t deserve to feel guilty about something he was so overjoyed about, and while you couldn’t bear it, you let him keep talking about the admirer. 

“...And look at how she writes her lowercase d’s, the stem has a little loop, that’s so cute, I’m so obsessed! Is this what Masumi feels like all the time around Director-sensei? He was absolutely onto something. Love is real.”

“Do you mind if I ask something?” You asked as he hummed a happy little song. You hesitated for a moment. “You might not like it but I kind of need to ask.”

“Huh? What’s up?”

“Don’t take this too harshly, I don’t really want to ruin your mood or anything, it’s great to see you so happy. Really. It’s great. But are you actually interested in this person, or just having a relationship?”

“Well, obviously, it’s…” To your dismay, his delight sunk, and he met your eyes. “Hey, wait a sec. Reader, are you okay?”

“It’s more like, are you okay? Because I don’t want you to get hurt.” You felt your words freeze cold, but your blood was boiling. “She totally pegged you wrong. You’re not meek, and you’re not just- not just meant to be owned, you know? And maybe you don’t notice it but I do, she sounds so possessive. And that scares me for you because- because it just feels like she wants to date an actor she saw from afar, not the Taichi Nanao I know and love.”

You stared straight ahead and walked faster, ugly emotions rising and churning like lava underneath your skin, but your concerns were true. You were scared. The prospect of a partner molding and using Taichi was one of the greatest fears you had for your best friend and his pursuit of a love life, and regardless of how you felt romantically towards him, that would never change. Yes, maybe he’d always see you as no more than “one of the bros”, and that possibility stung, but you’d rather get rejected on loop by him than see him fall into an unhealthy relationship. 

You didn’t even need to turn to know Taichi sped up to keep up with you as his footfalls cracked the pavement. “Hey, hold on. You sound so out of it, are you okay?” 

“Mhm, but it doesn’t matter. Are you okay?”

“Um.” He pursed his lips into a tight, thin line. “I am, but I dunno. You’re not telling me something, and it’s seriously upsetting you, right? So you can tell me. We’re best friends! And I trust you.”

You felt something enclose your hand, and you looked down. Taichi wrapped his own hands around it, stubby fingers over your knuckles. “It feels awful seeing you so down, so if there’s anything I can do I want to be there for you!”

When you turned your head, you saw it; the ever-feared Look™. You were pretty sure Taichi didn’t even know he did the Look™. His big eyes squinted into a determined, pointed stare, as if it’d make him look tougher, but he looked like a kindergartener in defiance of naptime about to cry. “I don’t want to do anything that’d make my best friend uncomfortable!”

“Then don’t do that!” You snatched your hand away. “Don’t just- don’t do that. Not to me. Not when you’re about to go out with someone else.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s something I can’t have, Taichi! Because I already like you so much and it feels horrible to know that I can’t have that with you because you’ll only see me as a friend! It’s awful and the more I think about it the more impossible it seems and the dumber I feel for being like this and liking you. 

“But you don’t deserve that. You can make your own decisions. I don’t have any authority to tell you who and who not to pursue, and I just have to deal with that and my own stupid feelings on my own because that’s not a burden you deserve to shoulder.” 

Nails digging into your skin was what snapped you away from your outburst. Your hand formed a tight fist as you spoke, and in the silence that ensued, you let go and watched the tiny curves from your nails fade.

You didn’t hear a response, and you didn’t have the heart to look at Taichi for a reaction, either. You sighed, ran your hand against your face and through your hair. “I’m sorry, but that’s just the truth. And I know it’s such a dickish thing, but I know more than anyone how much it blows for pretty much everyone involved and I don’t want to hurt you so I just want to ignore it. It doesn’t matter. It’s whatever. I’m sorry.” 

More silence followed. You don’t remember the last time you felt so small and insignificant. The footsteps beside you ebbed to a stop and then there really wasn’t any sound other than wind whistling through the neighborhood trees.

So you steeled yourself and turned your face with a mask of neutrality as you spoke softly, “I mean, we’re still friends, right?”

“Can I kiss you?”

“What.” You raised an eyebrow as your indifference brewed into a storm of anger, disgust and embarrassment, and struggled to keep them contained. “You shouldn’t play with people’s emotions like that, Taichi,” you said coldly. “Do you really just want a partner so bad that you would just torment me like that?”

“No! I wouldn’t, that’s not what I meant!”

“So what do you mean?”

“I mean that I like you!”

“No you don’t,” you spat. “You don’t have to comfort me. That’s on me. And you don’t have to date me, either, just because you want someone doesn’t mean-”

“I don’t want someone, I want you! I spent this entire time trying to find someone else because I’ve liked you for forever and I didn’t want to kill our dynamic so I wanted to get over you!”

You watched him with wide, wavering eyes. He leaned forward and kept his eyes shut, face scrunched with determination as he forced himself to blurt it out. “And I don’t know, maybe the admirer’s a catch or not but I don’t care. Because if you-” he gulped. His cheeks went from rose pink to poppy. “If you like… if you like me, and I like you, t-then!”

“You like me?”

“How could I not? You’re always listening to me, and helping me clean up my messes, and you see the best in everything. And just being around you makes me feel so good. Like I can be myself and tell you anything.”

“Why are you so nice to me. Just so-” You covered your hot face with your hands. “Can I kiss you? I don’t know, is that too forward to ask? I really want to. Can I?”

He squeaked and nodded. “Yeah! I’d really like to-“

You watched his bright blue eyes glow even brighter as they snapped open and you did as you were told. Underneath your lips, you felt his mouth curve into a smile before he returned, pink lips against your chapstick, and with firmness that made you want more, more, more. 

But not yet. Not yet, when everything is so new and unexplored, and Taichi feels so perfectly soft. He’s very gentle with you, you realized; even while kissing you, his hands brushed against you tentatively, not quite sure where to put them. 

So you wrapped your arms around his neck and back, and hoped he got the message. The light touch at your nape confirmed it. 

You pull away after a minute that feels like a month, breathless. You glance at Taichi, and his tomato red face is the only thing keeping you from melting into ooze.

“That was nice,” he said, almost in a daze. It didn’t take a genius to notice he was staring at your lips. “I think I messed up? C-can I try again?”

“Yes,” you responded, a little too quickly. “Anytime. Yes.”

It took Taichi an embarrassingly long time to get his heart rate under control, even after you started the walk back home. 

He leaned against the front door and let his feet slide away until he sat down, hands covering his face and poking into his hair. His forehead still felt feverish, but he’d just have to make do. Everyone might get worried if he doesn’t enter soon. 

He fumbled for his house keys, prayed his voice wouldn’t crack, and entered. “Hey!”

“Hi, Taichi! Didn’t see you there!” Misumi chirped, despite standing right by the front window. Beside him, Kazunari swatted his arm.  

Also on the couch was Banri, Itaru, and Citron, phones in hand but all three turned to face him. The former spoke up first. “S’up. Anything happen today?”

“Maybe something you’d like to tell us?”

“Specifically animist?”

“What?”

Itaru tapped a finger against his chin. “This one’s hard, even for me. Animal? Analyst?” Taichi could swear Itaru’s eyes went from looking at the ceiling to staring straight at him. “Amorous?”

“Among Us?”

“Yes, that!” Citron raised a hand, and Itaru smacked it. Banri also went in for the high five, but Citron looked scandalized. “Not you. I cannot believe you think I would misunderstand Among Us,” he said sadly. 

Banri shrugged. “Worth a shot.”

Meanwhile, Taichi was busy feigning laughter. “That’s really good! Did you guys rehearse that? That almost sounded planned!”

“Well, did anything happen today?” Rounding out the rest of the actors in the room was Azuma, holding a cup of tea and crossing his legs at the table, as photogenic as ever. Across him was an Omi with a massive teapot in his hands.  

Oh, jeez. Taichi would be the first to admit he’d love to show you off, but his head was still spinning from earlier events and boy, did he want to scream into a pillow. 

“Not really? Just getting through another day at school. Almost fell asleep in history, haha.” Taichi mentally kicked himself for that fake-ass chuckle. 

Azuma took a long sip of tea.

“I’m glad you’re catching up on sleep, but make sure you’re studying. Education is important,” Omi called as he poured himself a cup of tea. 

“You sure nothing happened?” Kazunari toyed with the brim of his fedora. “You seem kind of out of it.”

“What? No! Hahaha! I’m to-tally fine!” Taichi begged himself to stop fake-laughing just as the doorbell rang. “Oh! Cool! I’ll get that!”

“Yoink.” Misumi beat him to the punch. “Hello! Who’s this?”

“Oh, I recognize you! Captain Sky, right?”

Oh no. 

“That’s me! Can I help you? Oh, just so you know, we don’t do autographs while at home-”

“No autographs, sorry. But I’m looking for my favorite actor, Taichi? We were walking home together and he forgot this.”

Acting on an impulse he hasn’t felt since he was five, Taichi attempted to turn invisible. 

“Come in! He just came home. Taichi, say hi!”

As it turns out, every superhero comic he’s ever read about everyday people developing their powers in high-pressure situations was full of crap, because Misumi was looking at him dead in the eye while you approached. 

Whatever thoughts he had left, they all dissipated as you took his hand (!) and pressed his phone into it. 

“I forgot to give it back after I punched in the location for our date. Don’t forget, 7 on Friday evening, alright?”

“Alright,” he mumbled. He was focused on your hand against his. You did that! You initiated that! That means you really liked him!

You broke away, but your pinky clung onto his. You watched his dopey smile as you went in for a peck on the cheek. “See you then, Tai!”

“Mmwwuhuh- huh,” he said. 

But you were already out the door, saying your goodbyes and blowing him a kiss (a kiss! How adorable!) by the time he decided to use his words. 

The door shut with a creak, and all was silent. 

“Did we miss something?” Azuma asked, daintily placing his teacup on its saucer like he was watching golf. 

Then all hell broke loose. 

Kazu dove to noogie Taichi. “Way to go, doggo!”

“GJ.” Itaru was already back to rhythm gaming, but it was obvious he was holding back a laugh. 

“Congratulations, Taichi,” Omi said, the one normal person in the room. 

Taichi thanked him while smothered in a hug with Kazunari, the older puppy crying crocodile tears. “I can’t believe our Taicchan is all grown up now! You’re like a whole little man!”

“I’m seventeen,” he protested. Then he connected the dots. “Wait, were you guys watching that?!”

“We heard yelling and got concerned,” Omi clarified. “I didn’t know what was going on until Misumi answered the door.”

“I can’t believe you guys.”

“As a wise woman once said: ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it,’” Citron recited. “Beyoncé, 2005.”

“I can’t believe you know Beyoncé lyrics but not the word for ‘amorous!’”

“I can’t believe Taichi’s the first one in this house to eat ass,” Banri said. 

“I am not eating ass, Banri!”

“Oh, my bad. Sorry for your loss.”

“NEO, seriously, quit it, you’re about to make me lose a full combo.”

“I’m going to my dorm!” Taichi cried. “I’m going to scream into a pillow and I’m never gonna talk to any of you ever again!”

“You don’t eat ass but you’re going to practice screaming? Who are you, DJ Khaled?”

12.   story behind url:  “wulfriic” is an Anglo-Saxon masculine given name, composed of the elements wulf "wolf" and ric "rich, powerful". Which tbh made sense to me, Gwyn’s name means “White Wolf” so I was looking for a word that had, at least, wolf in it. I stumbled upon wulfric and, well, I just added an extra i for url sakes lol. 

 13.   fun fact:  I have a lot of weird fun facts, but uh, I gotta go with the one where my friends, who are aware that I have ADHD and I have what we call “memoria de teflon” or Teflon memory, my friends usually give me all the hot gossip and are not worried at all that I’ll spill the deets, simply because I forgot those things like, a day later, lol.

Welcome to the 2020 Will Appreciation Fest! (aka, the imaginary fest that @ragtag-band-of-murderers​ and I created while we were kidding around, and then about which other people started messaging me saying that they actually wanted to participate, and so it became real.)

WHAT IS THIS?

This is a no pressure, no deadline, open-to-all-comers opportunity for people to hang out together and have fun creating content about Will - Merlin’s best friend, Ealdor’s inconvenient truth-teller, and the dude who took one look at royalty and said, to royalty’s face, “yeah, not impressed.”  Fanfic, fanart, whatever you want to make - if you love this character, this is a place to share it!

THE DEETS:

This is not a traditional fest, in the sense that there aren’t any sign-ups, nor a hard and fast deadline for posting, etc.  Instead, we’re just setting up a centralized hub for the rest of this year’s Will-related content, so that everyone who wants to follow what people are making can find things, reblog them, and interact with each other!

When to Submit: Anytime between now and the end of the year!  This is a no-pressure event (all of our lives are overwhelming enough right now, I think, without adding another deadline to the mix), so your host (me, @panharmonium!) will be collecting submissions on a rolling basis and reblogging as things come in.

How to Submit: Tag your piece “willappreciation2020″ (and remember - you have to do this within the first 5 tags, otherwise your post will not show up).  I will be monitoring the tag and reblogging everything to @willappreciationfest for all to see.  However, because tumblr’s tag pages are wonky and often don’t display everything, I would also strongly suggest messaging me directly with a link to your post whenever your piece goes up - that way I definitely won’t miss it!

How to Keep Up With Submissions: Follow or check in on this blog (@willappreciationfest)!  You can also try following the “willappreciation2020″ tag, but again, tumblr’s algorithm isn’t super reliable, so messaging me with your piece and keeping an eye on the blog itself is your best bet to catch everything that comes in.

Who Can Submit: Anyone and everyone!  Never written fic before?  Sounds great!  Never drawn before?  Come on in!  English isn’t your first language?  No worries!  We are all just here to appreciate a character who deserves more love, so if that sounds like fun to you, you are welcome to join in! <3

What Can I Submit: There’s only one guideline for this event, and it’s this: Will gets dealt kind of a rough hand in fandom sometimes, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, the purpose of this particular event is to give Will some love.  That doesn’t mean the pieces you create for him have to be all happy fun-times, by any means; it just means that for this event, we’d like his character to be approached by creators in the spirit of respect/appreciation (eg, this fest is not the right venue for Will being used as a convenient antagonist or being dumped for Arthur in what is actually a Merlin/Arthur story.  Nothing wrong with those plotlines in and of themselves; this just isn’t the right place for them!)  Other than that, anything goes - fic/art/other creative media, canon, au, gen, ship, long, short; we’re happy to see all of it!

I am a fairly small blog in the Merlin world and my reach is limited, so if you see this and happen to know folks who might be interested, please pass it along or tag people in!  I’ll be tracking the willappreciation2020 tag from now until the end of the year, and I’ll also be on the lookout for any messages from more folks who want to come and play!
