does a career in finance feel meaningful to you? what do you do, exactly?
I'm an equity analyst at a long only fund. In short, I pick stocks. The long answer is here (this is a little out of date, I'm no longer industry agnostic and I now look globally, not just in Europe).
Meaningful is an interesting question. I guess my answer is no but that doesn't impact my enjoyment of it. My job lets me learn things for money, which is pretty much ideal for me. I get set an industry or a space within an industry to look at, I learn loads about it, then I come back with a report after a few weeks. It's pretty much perfect for me.
I've never been particularly interested in my work being meaningful - work needs to provide me with (1) the finances to live the lifestyle I want, (2) intellectual stimulation, and (3) ideally a pleasant atmosphere. Meaningful doesn't really come into it for me.
That said, my fund is a unique in that our largest shareholder is a charitable foundation -- when our founder passed away, he donated his shares to this foundation. In practice, that means that a portion of the money we as a fund earn goes to supporting charitable causes. And we the staff get to pick the charities that the foundation supports. The grants are pretty substantial in size and can make a really big difference to the charities we support. So all that's to say: there is a meaningful component to my work, even if it's not a primary attraction of my job to me.

There's legal silence where you keep sensitive information to yourself. And there's silence where you don't even say "please be patient we'll update you in time, we're actually talking to the union/the admins/the intern team". For us viewers, we don't need to know more than to have the assurance that things are being taking care of. We don't need to be repeated the exact same info I différent words over and over again.
There's silence with your team where you want to be careful with your wording. And there's silence with your team where you keep them completely in the dark about their future, not even saying what they just need to hear: "sorry about how things turned out, we have no certainty in either taking you back or not, right now our priority is financial stability, we cannot tell you our différent options so far, but we'll update you when and if we can afford to take you back".
There's silence where you ask for discretion because you will not be able to keep that many people in the team and don't want leaks about what branches are kept and which one will close, then announcing to a whole group of admins that they'll be let out of the project starting this or this day. And there's silence where you warn a lot of twitter update admins that they won't be in the project starting immediately through discord and closing said discours before everyone had even a chance to read it.
There's silence where you're afraid of leaks and there's silence where you don't treat people working for you with respect.

"That's the list of the folk from whom I buy. D'you see? Well, then, here on this page are the country folk, and the numbers after the names are where their accounts are in the big ledger. Now, then! You see this other page in red ink? Well, that is a list of my town suppliers. Now, look at that third name. Just read it out to me."

Do you think you'll have more kids, or are you done? How do you decide how many is enough?
The answer is we don't know! Before we got married, we discussed kids, I wasn't about to marry someone who wasn't okay with the possibility of adopting all our kids. I've always wanted kids, but i knew with my history with an eating disorder, I might not have been able to handle being pregnant. Originally, we both wanted four kids. We both have three other siblings, and liked that dynamic.
However, I think it's important for partners to be partners when discussing kids. Your original number might not be realistic for a number of life reasons. Maybe the person giving birth has serious complications and it would be dangerous to have another, and then maybe adoption (or other methods of having kids) is just too expensive an option. Also too, maybe your family feels complete already before you hit the original kid quota.
We knew with our first kid pretty soon on we were not a complete unit. Now? Nether of us have sat down and given it thought, we're still adjusting to having two kids. Maybe in a few months we'll feel complete. Maybe we won't. maybe we'll adopt or foster if we don't feel complete.
Kids, if you both want them, should be an ongoing discussion, I think.

April 2023 Financial Update
Let's try this again. This time with the correct month. Thanks for reading!
April went by in a flash and it feels like May is shaping up to do the same. Ever since we left Mesa we have been busy trying to get caught up on projects and hobbies while at the same time getting back to enjoying the things we love like hiking and site seeing. And since we have family that lives close by we have to make sure we find time to visit and catch up while we can. Over the last month…

Things i think should be implemented for all adults immediately:
Adult sized Playgrounds. Both outside ones and indoor padded ones
Recess
Light up shoes
Getting a little gift at the doctor's. Especially invasive uncomfortable ones like downstairs ones and the dentist (and no the gift cannot be a toothbrush).
Further info on the gifts: Plushies, little toys, fidgets and stuff you can get at finance conventions are all applicable. These cannot be gendered if my gynecologist gives me a girl power lipgloss i will start murdering people i want a plushie. (not pink!). Badges for being very brave and doing an awesome job.
Getting a little gift after you submitted your taxes or when you did some official paperwork like a patch or maybe a sticker
Dinosaur bed sheets (adult sized!!!!)
Nonfiction books with textured patches in them and little flaps to reveal secret information. Because unfortunately i already know about farm animals.
No homework (this goes for kids too it's damaging)
Books about adventures that aren't about sex or depression or violence or tax evasion but also do not the feature 11 year old protagonists as middle schooler books understandably do.
Sand boxes with sand box toys and little mills you can power with sand and no i don't mean zen gardens they're awesome but not what i need
Informed consent gender affirming care and abortions and sterilisations
Museums where you can touch everything and press buttons to make things move (and no the ones that are specifically for kids get you stared at and you are expected to let the kids go first. I have the same rights a toddler has to stare at how the different sands move from button pressing position for 15 minutes and i need a space to do so)
Cool funfacts about animals and space in the newspaper

Woke up this morning and found a message from work that I need to visit the secretary of state today. Taking the opportunity to listen through the entire Audio for Rich Dad Poor Dad again and remind myself why I decided to get wealthy (will review sometime soon). Scenery on the way has been gorgeous.
