sauropoda is a clade of saurischia that includes some of the largest dinosaurs we currently know of. if i'm going to submit something to you it's going to include these guys. they include some familiar faces like the brontosaurus. but the largest specimen within this group is a giant barosaurus fossil.

and charismatic megafauna are cool and all but have you considered something a little smaller? maybe a Black Capped Chickadee? they tend to travel in groups or two or more when they're flying outside the nest and their call "chicka dee" functions as a warning call of increasing intensity depending on how many "dee"s they add.

and bugs? here's the thing: i have fought with Polistes metricus for years growing up. have they stung all of my loved ones? absolutely. do they also eat an invasive species of worm in my area? yes. and while these guys will sting you without a second thought and fly away laughing, they are a necessary evil. just like the birds, they stop for a sip of water. they are, i must admit through gritted teeth, an important part of my ecosystem.

okay so i saw this on youtube... and I dunno just thought 0f ASA... (yes yes I know I carry my otome fangirl spirit everywhere but this was seriously a sweet video) and I had to rant here

the video begins with the male teacher asking students if they heard rumours about him dating his fellow teacher, and then admitting to the rumours... and as everyone goes wild he proposes to her saying they are more than dating!

Ok... So here's some science about Mount Everest:

- her peak is about 5.5mi/8.8km above sea level. That's too high above sea level for anything good or normal to happen to you.

- for some perspective, commercial planes (like "I'm taking a flight to visit Nigeria" planes) pimp around at 5.6mi to 7.5mi/9km to 10.4km above sea level. That's only a 528ft/200m difference between an idiotic Eat+Pray+Love-esque fantasy and fucking Delta passengers eating peanuts and watching The Love Guru.

- "the death zone" on Everest starts at about 5mi/8km up and has air so thin that each breath you take in has less than 1/3rd the oxygen you need per inhale. So you're getting less than what you need to live, let alone keep climbing.

- more perspective! Sea level air has 21% oxygen, which is great! Super healthy, yummy. That drops to about 12% oxygen at just 2mi/3km up. Bad, not healthy. And it! Keeps! Going!

- the whole "less than 1/3rd oxygen" thing? Makes your cells die. Like... broadly speaking. The cells that Make You die off because those cells reeeeeeally need oxygen to... do everything. Skin, liver, tongue, eardrum, finger bone, colon, and more, all dying on a cellular level all at once.

- "the death zone" also makes your body rebel in fun ways like altitude sickness, impaired judgement, heart attacks, strokes, and more! So your cells are dying, you can't think straight, you make bad calls and don't even remember making them, and maybe your heart fails to top it off!

- even using air tanks, a climber described the climb as "like running on a treadmill and breathing through a straw". So bringing yummy, ideal oxygen volume with you doesn't actually fix anything, really, so say people who have actually survived!

- "but you can acclimate to higher altitudes!" Acclimating on Everest makes your body absolutely PUMP itself full of hemoglobin, which thickens your blood and you'll start having fluid accumulate in your lungs, family health history and personal fitness be damned. Now you can have a stroke at any moment and you might be coughing up frothy icky stuff so much and so hard your ribs can crack, so sayeth Everest survivors who have had to heal from just that.

- oh, and they've actually done real medical tests (like drawing blood at high altitudes) to learn this, it's not just smart people guessing.

- before I forget the best (read: scariest) part, your brain will swell up. Brain swell = nausea and psychosis.

- you can go snow blind (your eyeballs get sunburns).

- blind, vomitting, coughing through cracked ribs, unable to remember where you are, and suffocating while your cells die off in the millions each moment.

- she's cold! "the death zone" is never above 0F/-17.7C. Ever. Exposed skin will freeze rapidly and lead to frostbite. Even unexposed skin might freeze! Frostbite might invite her equally sexy (read: scary) friend Gangrene.

- the average summer temperature at her summit is -2F/-19C, with an average winter temperature of -32F/-36C, and it can drop down to -76F/-60C.

- I don't think you need a breakdown on why those temperatures aren't good to be going hypoxic at, but being super cold AND hypoxic can lead to stripping yourself nude(called "paradoxical undressing") and walking around outside. Google it if you don't believe me.

- The Donner Party did that whole cannibalism/hypothermia/starvation thing at 1.3mi/2km above sea level. They experienced paradoxical undressing, frostbite, and fatal hypothermia. Now scale that up to Everest heights and you'll see why it's not a good idea to climb her.

- I think you know why all of this is bad and why it's bad for trying to climb things. Right? Yeah. Try pulling yourself up with just your closed fists (can't use frostbitten fingers!), while holding your breath, with your eyes closed (you're snowblind!), after spinning around a bunch (you've got altitude sickness!) outside during a blizzard. Now imagine doing that with like twelve other fools. And there's hundreds of fools ahead of and behind you. And a healthy fraction of them are native Tibetans risking their own lives just trying to feed their families by guiding idiots.

- oh and so many fools are trying to climb her that PEOPLE HAVE TO WAIT THEIR TURN TO TAKE SELFIES AT THE TOP *INSIDE* "THE DEATH ZONE". THEN THEY DIE ALL UP IN THERE. Like 11 fools died in just a single month in 2019 because they had to wait in "the death zone".

- there's about 100+ dead bodies up there that can't come down, and many of those bodies are clearly visible during attempts to summit. People are camping alongside corpses. They use them as trail markers. You're literally constantly surrounded by the dying and the dead.

- there's so. much. human. shit. and I mean poop. There's also so. much. shit. as in garbage. It's all dead bodies, poop, garbage, and shredded climbing/camping equipment. These weirdo glory seekers aren't packing out their own poop and granola wrappers and haven't been for years.

- so... I guess enjoy the "beauty" of a plastic bag full of human shit next to a huge flapping strip of torn bright pink gore-tex tent that's next to luna bar wrappers that are next to a frozen corpse whose family knows they're up there surrounded by bags of human shit, luna bar wrappers, torn gore-tex, and a stupid, selfish egocentric rich asshole who thought they were too good to just fly to Nigera for a month.

- your grip strength won't matter. Your leg strength won't matter. Your personal endurance won't matter. Your strength, speed, stamina, and health won't matter.

Season Lengths & Tempest Presets

This post is mainly for @gifappels-stuff because they asked a question in comments that is not at all practical to answer in comments. :) However, it occurs to me that there is probably general confusion about this subject because I haven’t been really clear. So, what follows is an overview of how seasons work in a vanilla game and then an explanation of what the Tempest mod does and how the presets I make work. 

I’m cutting the rest so that uninterested folks can more easily scroll by this post, but if you are an interested person, then clicky the “Keep Reading” thingy.

I’m going to try to be organized and do this in sections and to keep tangents to a minimum. We’ll see if I succeed...

1. How Vanilla Seasons Work

I’m sure everyone’s familiar with the Seasons tab on the Game Options menu, where you can specify what seasons to use in a world, how long those seasons will be, and what weather patterns (meaning, snow, hail, rain, etc.) are allowed in the world. In a vanilla game, you can have seasons anywhere between 6 and 28 days long, and by default the seasons are set at 7 days long each. This is straightforward.

What might not be so obvious, however, is that the vanilla game has underlying mechanics as to how these seasons work. The game’s vanilla weather is weird, to say the least. It has quite extreme seasons where the winters are very, very cold (down to 0F/-18C and it doesn’t go above freezing) and the summers are very, very hot (up to 100F/38C). It also has weird settings such that, for example, it can still rain (as opposed to snow) when it’s 20F/-7C. (I imagine this is so that people who turn off snow will still have precipitation when it’s cold in winter, but if you don’t turn off snow, it is very weird.) It has super-long storm durations so that it can and often does rain/snow for days at a time, especially so in summer where rain is also weighted high compared to other weather patterns, meaning that the game will choose it more often than the other weather patterns, including the “no precipitation” pattern. If you don’t mod your game, this is the kind of stuff you get, and it’s awful. None of it is like any real climate on Earth.

Further, the vanilla game has seasonal temperature transitions built into it. As an example, at the start of spring, the game will choose temperatures in the colder end of the allowed temperature range for spring, in an attempt to have a smoother transition between winter and spring. This is great...except that the transitions are only two days long. Which is just fine if you’re playing 7 day seasons, but not so fine if you’re playing 28-day seasons, which ought to have longer transitions. The problem is that the transitions don’t scale to season length. Because EA is a big dumb.

Season length and transition length are both moddable. This mod addresses those, and if you’re not afraid to open the mod in s3pe and change a couple of numbers, you can make both of those things exactly what you want, with 1000-day-long seasons with 100-day transitions if that floats your boat. That mod, however, doesn’t touch the weather at all. That is Tempest’s job.

2. Tempest

Among a few other things, Tempest fixes EA’s completely asinine weather, but it doesn’t do it by itself. You don’t just dump it in your mods folder and forget about it. No, unless you go in and fiddle with things yourself, Tempest will simply follow EA’s dumb weather. Tempest merely allows you to fiddle, by allowing you to directly manipulate, among other things, allowed temperature ranges and weather pattern probabilities, resulting in custom climates that are exactly what you want them to be. (Or as close as you can get them, at least; the game chooses weather patterns randomly, after all, and statistical outliers are a thing.) This allows you to, for instance, turn on or off weather patterns by season rather than globally. (So, you can for example set it to allow snow only in winter -- or even just part of winter -- rather than just turning it on or off entirely.) This is the beauty of Tempest, but its beauty requires input from you, either by you going in and fiddling yourself or by you importing a preset like the ones I’ve shared.

Overall, Tempest can work in two ways. One is more global and general -- what I and what the mod calls “Default” -- and one can be insanely specific and detailed.

“Default” settings apply each season’s settings across the entire season, no matter how long you set your seasons to be. So, aside from EA’s lame attempt at transitions, the game can choose from among the same allowed temperature range on Day 1 as it can on Day 7 or Day 50 or whatever. The weather pattern probabilities will also be the same across the entire season, no matter its length. So the chance of, for instance, rain will be the same on Day 1 as it is on Day 7 or Day 50 of the season.

Tempest can also work non-globally, what I call “non-default” settings. You do this by disabling the default setting and creating your own custom settings. Non-default settings can be as specific as you want them to be. For instance, say you have 30-day seasons and you want to break each season out into three 10-day-long sections that have different allowed temperature ranges and different weather pattern probabilities, in order to simulate the three months of a real-world season. You can do that in Tempest because when not using the default setting you can specify temperatures and weather probabilities by specific day ranges instead of for the season as a whole. So for the 30-day-season example, you can specify different settings for Days 1-10, Days 11-20 and Days 21-30 of each season. You can also create, for instance, the possibility of a heat wave or a cold snap within a certain day range of a certain season. You cannot do these detailed sorts of things under the default setting because it applies the same settings to every day of a season, but you can go absolutely crazyballs with non-default settings, if you want to.

There are pros and cons with both. Non-default settings are, obviously, more detailed and can result in far more realistic weather in-game than default settings. On the flip side, they are more difficult/time-consuming to create and, most importantly, they lock you into specific season lengths. If you try to apply a setting meant for 30-day seasons to a 7-day season game, it won’t work. (I mean, it will work in the sense that it won’t break your game or anything, but the weather won’t work as intended.) Default settings, on the other hand, are more flexible because you can use literally any season length you want with them, but on the flip side they are far less specific and less realistic, if realism is a thing you care about.

For me personally, if I’m playing a game with short seasons (less than 10 days), I’ll use a default Tempest setting. But if I’m playing longer seasons, I will make non-default ones tailored to the season length I’m playing. And I’ll also mod the season transition lengths to match using that mod I linked to or, more commonly, I’ll set transition lengths to 0 in that mod and then build proper transitions into the Tempest settings instead because EA’s transitions are, like most EA things, not perfect. I will also occasionally go completely crazyballs. (A 336-day year with 84-day seasons each broken into 12 7-day-long sections each with slightly different temp ranges and weather pattern probabilities? Yeah, I’ve done that. LOL) 

Which leads me to:

3. My Tempest presets

Unless I have specifically noted otherwise, all of the presets I share are/will be default settings. This means that you can use them regardless of the season lengths you play with but with the caveat, as I said, that the seasonal settings apply equally (less EA’s or your modded seasonal transitions) across the entire season, whatever its length. Default settings are, I feel, the most useful for the most people because you can basically drop them in your Library folder and import them and not have to do a damn thing otherwise if you don’t want to.

That said, I have shared a few non-defaults and non-default variations of default settings I’ve shared, and I will always tell you the season length that they are designed for. If you would like more/different non-default settings, you can get them in two ways:

You can request them from me. You will need to tell me what kind of climate you want (by giving me preferably a city/town name or at least a region name so that I can look up the climate for that city/region), how long you want your seasons to be, and any specific details you would like to include. I’m happy to make them, within reason, but I cannot guarantee that I can or will make them quickly. Because I have a life but, more importantly, I can be notoriously flaky, not to mention easily distracted by large building projects. If you’d rather not wait on flaky ol’ me...

You can make them yourself, either completely from scratch or by using a preset I’ve shared as a template to work from. I wrote up an entirely-too-long tutorial that details every aspect of using Tempest and creating climates in it. It starts here. Have at it. Part 4 of the tutorial is most relevant to creating non-default settings, but if you’re completely unfamiliar with Tempest, it’s probably best to read the whole thing. (Sorry! But as I said, it’s not a drop-it-in-and-forget-it kind of mod.)

SC (Arrtem) and SS (Scylan) design updates using Fantroll Creator

(Both are still violetbloods, but Arrtem doesn't see the point in exclusively wearing his blood colour (despite Scylan repeatedly trying to explain it to him))

Arrtem and Scylan are moirails and have been for years

They each use a weapon that the other gifted them for their hatching day one sweep (Scylan uses chainkind and I'm unsure what Arrtem uses (potentially staffkind?), but his strife specubis was likely decided with help from Scylan)

His lusus is a Chimaera or Ghost Shark, and he lives in a deep-sea cave (though he comes up to the surface fairly regularly to hang out with Scylan)

His Trollian tag is SketchyChimaera, referencing his interest in drawing (which is difficult underwater, though he's found his ways) and his lusus. It also references the mythological Chimaera, 'a being composed of disparate parts' (referencing his violetblood and his moiraillegience with SS (who is everything a violetblood should be), while he himself doesn't really act like a violetblood and isn't interested in it)

Her lusus is a giant eel, and she lives on a small island in the ocean (although she goes underwater to see Arrtem fairly often)

Her Trollian tag is SerpentineSanity, referencing her lusus/general snake theme she has going on (the 'Sanity' aspect may or may not come into play later on), and her name is a combination of 'Scylla' (a serpentine monster from Greek mythology) and the scientific name for eels 'Anguiliformes'

They both use ':>' and ':<' (and variants) not only to represent their lusii's mouths, but to also represent the moiraillegience symbol <>

Scylan is a Prospit Dreamer, while Arrtem is a Derse Dreamer. Arrtem *might* be a Mind player? Unsure of classpects rn

Ahklrium Pirate Tales

Below is a short list of some tales that are shared amongst pirates. 

Irmirath’s Dolls: The mother of a young boy had accrued a debt with a terrifying pirate captain. The captain said that he would forgive this debt, if the young boy could find a way to kill the captain within a week of being on the captain’s ship. If the young boy could not succeed, he would be condemned to serve the captain for the rest of his life. The mother agreed. The young boy, Irmirath, was allowed to take one item from his home before he left. The mother, who was a master dollmaker, gave him a doll that was a perfect replica of her, and the mother kept a doll that was a perfect replica 0f Irmirath. The captain laughed, and already felt assured in his victory. Imirath was relentlessly bullied by the terrible crew of this terrible captain. He spent 3 days doing back-breaking work, and was tasked with cleaning every inch of the ship. The captain wanted Irmirath to be too tired and too busy to even contemplate murder. However, Irmirath and his mother were clever. At night, when all others were asleep, he would whisper all that he did and all that he found to his doll. The dolls were such a perfect replica that it was as if they were real people, and they could speak to each other. His mother would listen, and whisper advice. On the 4th day, the captain got cocky and tasked Irmirath with cleaning the captain’s quarters. Irmirath saw this as his chance. He snuck the doll beneath the captain’s pillow, and whispered his instructions. In the night, Irmirath crept to the captain’s quarters. He found the doll whispering to the captain, and the captain fell into a trance. Irmirath led the hypnotised captain to the edge of the deck, and with just the touch of one finger, the captain was pushed overboard. The crew discovered the boy had been successful, and was returned to his mother the following day. The crew, being a superstitious bunch, asked that the dolls be destroyed. The mother agreed. The crew burned the dolls, and threw them off the ship at the highest point in the sky. However some say that the dolls were created too perfectly, and could never be destroyed. Some believe they’re still out there… somewhere…

Tears of Stars: A lonely woman lived by herself. She was poor, and had only a rowboat to her name. She travelled the Realm, looking for a place to fit in, but found no hospitality. The only time she felt happy was at night. She would look up at the stars, and watch as the sky danced above her before she fell asleep. She dreamed of stars often, and wished to be among them. One night, it rained. The rain filled her rowboat, and caused it to sink. She was left stranded in a vast ocean with nobody around to help. She looked up at the sky to see if her stars were watching, but she found only clouds. As she began to cry, she saw that her tears shimmered and glistened against her cheeks. A teardrop fell into the ocean, and the water glimmered with what looked to be stardust. The stars that she loved so much had claimed her as their own. She sank below the waves, and let the rain drown her. When the last breath left her body, she exploded into a star, and soared to the heavens to be where she belonged. Some believe that the trail of her stardust had collected in the hollow of a small shell, and that shell is waiting to be discovered by someone who loves the stars.

Heart of Parthax: On a foggy night, a discreet ship silently sailed through the clouds. A pirate captain, Parthax, was guiding a ship full of people to sold. Parthax knew everything about sailing in the skies, and never needed a map. He had never been caught before. One woman, who was not asleep, spotted a small crack in the hull of the ship. She whispered out into the night, asking for help. Heading her call, a maiden made of mist appeared before Parthax. She demanded he release the prisoners, and never set foot in the skies again. Parthax tried to slash through the maiden, but she dodged his blows. The mist maiden asked again, but Parthax didn’t answer. He only tried to kill her. The mist maiden reached her hand through Parthax and extracted his heart. He collapsed to the ground, dead. The mist maiden allowed the captive woman to wield the heart. In the heart lay the map of the skies, and the captive woman saw the way home. After arriving safely home, the mist maiden took the heart with her and dispersed into the clouds. It’s said that if you call into the mist, the maid will appear. If you ask politely, and show her the respect she deserves, she will let you wield the heart to guide your journey.
