it’s insane to me that dream thought he would come out seen as the bigger person by posting a video of a drunk manic teenager that he’s clearly held onto as blackmail

Dat’s right, People, it’s time for ‘Keef watches TFP and you just get the notes!’
This is for season 1, episode 11: Speed Metal.
I write down the timestamps, but I watch Transformers Prime on Stan (an Australian streaming service) so they may be slightly off.
ALSO! I try my best to note points for every character, but tend to get a little caught up by Bee (although I think I do a pretty good job with the notes regardless) so do be warned.
~~~~Transition~~~~
00:03 - starting off strong with a pretty scene
00:21 - it feels like this should’ve been Knockout’s premiering episode. Does him a lot more justice.
00:39 - Knockout proving to be smarter than the autobots because his windows have an insanely heavy tint.
00:46 - My bro really that jealous that he felt a need to scratch up a custom paint job.
00:53 - Ya know what? Valid reaction.
01:18 - attempting murder.
01:37 - … So attempted onscreen vehicular murder
~intro~
02:46 - Why does Vince wait until AFTER Jack decides to leave to taunt him? Why not do it while he has to be there?
02:50 - and Jack leans into it. *sigh*
03:07 - That’s all you have to say, Arcee?
03:35 - so many reasons, Sierra. You don’t have a helmet, you’re still holding books, it’s really rude to ask someone for something like that if they weren’t actively asking you or if you don’t setup a scheduled time in advanced.
03:49 - Hang on… Where TF did Vince get a muscle car from in the fairest place??
03:59 - suck an egg, Sierra.
04:11 -here we have a Jack, forgetting that his ride is sentient so regardless of if it was a rule or not, if she says no, it’s a no.
04:20 - I thought the first rule was keep a low profile.
04:41 - that shot is ugly.
05:24 - it took him forever to get start, Jack could’ve gone already!
05:30 - they had an hour between the end of school and the race, yet chose now to put their books away?
07:08 - shoutout to Knockout’s VA. They do a really good job.
07:17 - *sniff sniff* smells like a lie.
07:26 - I like how Knockout isn’t phased at all.
07:36 - ‘Buff this!’
07:39 - Zoom. (Yes, that is the only comment I will make about this shot)
07:47 - this is one of those shots that make you realise that these bots are huge.
08:04 - how?? It had been like 20 minutes since the race and there were no witnesses to who had won. Even if the information had gone around that quick, I doubt that Vince would’ve been honest about loosing.
08:08 - how the line was delivered, it made it sound like Raf was calling Jack Vince.
08:21 - didn’t Jack say they shared a class together? How hard was she looking?
08:48 - I don’t understand how it’s a secret if high school students know about it.
09:19 - Imma be honest, I thought that was a vehicon.
09:27 - okay, but that sky-
Tumblr media
09:37 - who is Raf playing against?
09:42 - These kinda of shots make it hard to remember that the boys are huge compared to the kids.
Tumblr media
09:45 - …Why exactly does he ask Raf like that?? He knows Bee’s sentient.
09:46 - my head tells me he is saying ‘an hour? To go racing??’ My heart is telling me ‘Why are you asking Raf? He’s not in charge of me.’
09:52 - then he would be mildly annoyed.. Raf I don’t think you’re aware of just how calm Optimus actually is.
09:53 - With confidence I’m declaring that Bee said ‘Oh, right.’
09:58 - AroAce Raf hc.
10:04 - still completely ignoring that it’s actually Bee’s decision on if Jack can take him out racing.
10:14 - It’s a bit clearer in this timestamp but Jack Clones (courtesy @stefani-rebel)
10:16 - Bee’s numberplate is ‘936 SOH’… I know what my future numberplate will be(e)
10:26 - That does NOT explain how or why Jack owns a muscle car.
10:35 - THAT IS SO DANGEROUS. SIERRA’S STILL A CHILD.
11:00 - *dies* Knockout saying ‘Bumblebee’. I think I just like how deep voices say such an innocent word.
11:08 - ‘what was that Bee?’ As if he could understand Bee if he repeated himself.
11:09 - I’d just like to add, I really enjoy that Bee’s interior is lined with luminescent blue. It’s probably from that being one of the ways energon can look, so do you think that if Bee’s energon was drained out, all the blue would just turn black? …That went dark rq.
11:13 -why was Jack holding the wheel? I think I raised this question in convoy, but would the bots find it uncomfortable when someone touches their steering wheel/interior?
11:14 - this plays further into my ‘Is it uncomfortable for them’ question because we can tell the bots can control their steering wheels and require that control to drive.
11:40 - this reminds me so much of TF 2007
11:44 - it’s in character for Knockout to chase Bee, but wouldn’t it have been so funny if he instead focused on winning the race?
12:11 - Miko’s a trash liar.
12:16 - She only asked for Jack, how TF did she know Bee was with him??
12:20 - I now understand why Miko’s so bad.
12:46 - is that oil?? I feel like it would be a bodily fluid that shouldn’t be released that easily.
13:03 - and here we witness smart thinking from Bumblebee.
13:29 - Does anyone else wanna push Vince down the stairs? + all things considered, glad that there was an actual third party that’s actions affected the safety of the protags, rather than just excusing Knockout finding them to ‘of course he did’
13:36 - TFP stepping up with the ‘Naturally Knockout, an antagonist actively searching for the protags, noticed light behind him’
13:48 - accidental misgendering. Ask your car their preferred pronouns/lh
13:55 - what a lovely reminder that the bots are fragging huge.
Tumblr media
14:04 - I too, when having an unknown pointy object put right in front of me, stare directly at it and lean closer.
14:34 - well timed an acceptable pun. But then again, I can’t talk, every time I write ‘be’ I put an extra ‘e’ in brackets.
14:44 - I’ve always seen the angst potential in this moment. (‘I can’t understand you!’) Because it’s an unfortunate way of life for Bee.
14:51 - Despite clear instructions, Bee honks three times. But because there’s a slight pause between the second and third honk, Bee pretty much said ‘Good and Bad news’. I know a lot of people have probably noticed it, but I thought it was a nice touch.
14:57 - they look like a band
Tumblr media
14:58 - there eyes are glowing so harshly. It’s probably got to do with the fact that in vehicle mode they had their headlights on. + Bulkhead and Bee look at each other because they know they’re in huge trouble too. (I unfortunately didn’t manage to catch that in the screenshot tho)
Tumblr media
15:04 - Maybe being in bot form for longer than a minute, turns off the headlights.
15:08 - How the frag would he know that?? Like maybe it would be my second or third guess, but certainly not my first. (First would’ve been ‘He probably saw a potential hostage’)
15:15 - I may have laughed way too loudly at that
15:27 - Harsh light’s back, on Bee specifically.
15:35 - Okay, that’s cute and so in character. Raf being concerned about Bee and Miko being absolutely certain that Bulkhead will be okay and protect everyone.
15:44 - that establishes that they had originally told Optimus a lie, but the hadn’t.
16:00 - I get why Raf’s a bad liar, but why is Miko??
16:02 - you KNOW Optimus is done with their BS.
Tumblr media
16:03 - Look at him! L O O K . (Also ‘My father senses are going off. Why bother lying to me?.’)
Tumblr media
16:06 - not suspicious at all.
16:11 - z o o m . How did they not see him?
16:19 - gotta be honest, I enjoy when antagonists use a protagonist’s name. Just makes it feel more respectful.
16:39 - You can see Knockout at the back.
Tumblr media
16:57 - Bee walking backwards with ease makes me think a common technique the bots practice is walking backwards. That would be hilarious, all the bots going into a forest walking around backwards for like an hour.
16:58 - after a second glance I realised that Bee’s pedes/feet never left the ground. He was moonwalking.
17:07 - Bee can do a backhand spring.
17:10 - if Bee did what he usually does, he wouldn’t have been hit. He would usually duck the first few swings, but decided to try get the first hit against Breakdown. Makes no sense why he would considering that Breakdown’s build in a similar way to Bulkhead.
17:18 - Breakdown stumbles forward slightly when Bee hits him. NGL it’s kinda cute.
17:21 - See? Bee dodged the attacks, rather than getting the first punch!
17:24 - It’s implied this is Knockout’s vision and I hate it.
17:31 - Bee playing possum while Arcee rides Knockout like a skateboard.
17:34 - Rq, Bee’s fighting got significantly better once Arcee joined the fight. He feels more confident with her and I love that. (They’re family, your honour.)
17:35 - when he got them titanium legs- Why doesn’t Bee kick more though? He’s clearly got strong legs.
17:37 - Breakdown ran right into that one.
17:40 - surfs up, dude.
17:42 - one thing to note is that whenever a bot gets knocked off course they will quickly transform into the other mode to prevent damage.
17:46 - That’s a weird thing to say, Jack.
17:50 - Bee’s reaction time decreased significantly. Also how much damage can doorwings sustain?
17:57 - his face when he realised his hubby ran off.
18:05 - Bulkhead only now decides to do that?? Yes. Of course he does because he realised that Bee was down and about to get very hurt.
18:26 - yay! Optimus!
18:52 - Optimus just threw him like he was nothing.
18:58 - Makes me wonder, if the car parts were removed, would they be restored by a new alt mode?
19:27 - FRAG. I WANTED TO SEE BEE’S REACTION TO DISAPPOINTING OPTIMUS.
19:30 - he holds Vince the way you’d hold a sausage.
19:49 - like the con’s name
20:10 - moments like those make me wish the bots were allowed to punch humans.
20:28 - Starscream’s shaking
20:30 - Knockout looks like he’s wearing a hoodie
20:36 - he looks like a pigeon!
Tumblr media
20:47 - Breakdown looks genuinely scared and that makes me sad.
20:52 - WE DON’T EVEN GET THE OUTCOME?! I WANTED TO KNOW THE AFTERMATH OF DISAPOTIMUS
20:56 - go suck an egg, Sierra.
———————
And that was Speed Metal.
I find this episode’s really good and would’ve been a much better introduction to Knockout and Breakdown. Well.. mainly Knockout. Although I wish we had gotten some time with the bots getting in trouble.
I genuinely believe this episode did Knockout and Breakdown a lot more justice though, better conveying that Knockout considers his looks very important and will run off when the odds start to change, while Breakdown will fight until he can’t continue.
[Extras/Rewrite Announcement]
A/N:
Long time since my last update, and I will apologize for that since I didn't expect it to have been that long since then lmao
I've been rewriting ITBOMM!!!!!!
The reason for this is because there's a lot of scenes that I wanted to write, and a lot of storybuilding that I didn't have back then that I do now. There's a lot of interactions that I never got to write out prior to the timeskips, and there's a lot of relationships I'd like to better establish instead of just tossing everyone into the scenes in one chapter.
I'll be posting the rewrite under a new story as "re: in the back of my mind" and I'll be changing the title of this fic to ITBOMM. I'll be posting extra scenes, my outline, etc here, and mark it as complete.
CW: There is a scene where someone commits suicide. For those who wish to avoid it, I will be marking it as *** and ending the scene with the same marking. It isn't explicit and detailed, but I will still be marking it.
————————————————————
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear — or so the saying goes. He didn’t expect Odysseus to actually start attending their music lessons together, but he supposes that it doesn’t actually matter in the end. It should be a blessing in disguise, since it meant he could get to know the kid and regain some memories.
Should be, in theory.
Rather, what matters is how awkward Athanase feels when it comes to hanging out with a future anti-monarchy revolutionary leader, since his mother had stepped out of the room for several minutes. If you don’t see the issue with this, then allow me to paint the problem:
They were alone together. A member of the monarch’s family, and a future anti-monarch revolutionary.
“What did Your Highness say to make Lady Durk cry?” Odysseus had asked after a short while of silence. He seemed curious, despite his blank stare and monotone voice. Maybe he was just as bored as Athanase is, since they were both reading music scores and doing nothing but reviewing what they had just gone over while Countess Nightingale was out discussing something with Felix.
It was naïve of Athanase to think that nobody would’ve found out about Autumn. Felix was one thing, but if anyone else saw her crying, they’d think he was turning out to be more like his father, maybe. They knew Felix would keep his mouth shut, but if it were anyone else who saw her cry, word would spread like fire. For both of their sakes, he hoped she got away without being seen, but apparently not.
Still… it could’ve been worse. Odysseus was asking in a one on one conversation, without anyone else. Countess Nightingale didn’t seem like a blabbermouth, and the maids value their own life to gossip about the Imperial Prince’s playmate with other nobles around.
So that limited the amount of people who saw. Maybe Irene saw the crying and decided to get her brother to pry into the matter? It made sense…
At least it wasn’t his father — he’d probably ask if Athan found her to be a displeasing friend.
“Huh?” He blinked owlishly, trying to look as confused as he hoped he did. “What’re you talking about, Sir Odysseus? Why would big sis Verena cry?”
Athan was pretty fucking adorable — he knew this and was confident about this fact. He and Athy were blessed with damn good genes. Maybe, on a very slim chance, Odysseus would think he’s a cute and harmless person and that Autumn didn’t actually cry because of him.
“Hmm.”
Maybe his adoration for Ferdie was too strong. How the hell could anyone remain indifferent to his cute face?
. . .
Ah, he spoke too soon, Athanase thought, his eyes noticing the slightest red hue gracing Odysseus’ cheeks. The boy in question simply looked away as he muttered under his breath.
“Well… deserved…”
…?
Did he just scoff? His eyes had looked away, but Athanase could sense that there was a hint of scorn in his muttered voice. He was curious about what Odysseus actually said, but…
If he didn’t know any better, it sounded an awful lot like…
No, it couldn’t be.
Odysseus may be OOC for a character in Toska, but he was still a kid. Granted, no kids to his memories were ever really polite and cordial for the most part, but this was a world with a nobility setting.
(“Would you call me crazy, if I told you that I went back in time?” or so implies whatever character in a cliché rofan manhwa scenario.
Athanase waves the thought away.)
“I don’t know what you think might’ve happened, Sir Odysseus,” Athanase simply smiled. “Care to share your thoughts?”
“Ah, it was simply my imagination, Your Highness,” Odysseus politely responded with an obviously fake smile attached with the false pleasantries. “Forgive me for misunderstanding what happened. I was rather concerned if Lady Durk offended the Imperial Family.”
The way Odysseus apologized felt as if he were mocking him, especially with that twinkle in his eyes. He seemed greatly amused, actually. And it sounded like he himself saw her cry.
Maybe he wanted to know if his “rival” was out of the picture. Or miserable, depending on who he’s obsessed with.
Athan wanted none of Odysseus’ drama-starting shit.
‘He’s more of a brat than I thought,’ Athan absentmindedly thought, instead opting to refocus on his music sheet.
——————————
He could feel eyes staring at him, bearing into his soul.
A glance up, with a smile on his face, he sees his father, looking at him from where he sat at the dining table. Judging by the fact that Athy was nowhere to be seen, it was just Athan who arrived early.
“Good morning, papa!” Athan greeted sweetly, giving him a proper bow before moving to take his seat.
When he sits down he notices his father staring at him. Despite seeming expressionless, he couldn’t help but sense an unspoken displeasure.
Strange, did Athan do something wrong?
‘Maybe he just hates seeing my face as opposed to Athy,’ Athan absentmindedly thought, feeling a pang of bitter disappointment. It was hard not to hate his sister, even though she hadn’t done a damn thing.
The doors open up and in walks Felix holding Athanasia, who he promptly lets down after a glare from his father. He watches her dart around the table, the slightest blur of blonde heading towards their father, giving the man in question a hug.
Huh. When did Athy start getting so affectionate with him?
——————————
Interacting with Athy is, to put it bluntly, weird.
The realization that the original Athanasios hated his older sister made it hard to think of her as the same dumbass sister he cared about. On top of that, the loss of his twin telepathy made it difficult for him to understand her thought process now as if they were strangers. Knowing her, she was probably screeching profanities at him for ignoring her, since she didn’t know what was happening.
Her thoughts were always so loud, too…
Losing the telepathy was a huge blow, because now it left them with only one faucet of their personalities. He had a role to play as a sweet and gentle musician genius, while Athy was a cheerful and friendly prodigy who enjoyed learning. Their telepathy allowed them to just be two young adults in the same unfortunate circumstance.
But, he didn’t want to reconcile with her, if he had to be honest. It was necessary for the sake of convenience, yes, but unwanted.
Unlike him, Athanasia was “complete” in his eyes. She wasn’t burdened by lack of memories, she wasn’t shackled with comparisons purely by being recognized as a genius. Maybe she was the golden child, favoured by looking the most and acting like their mother.
His sister was not controlled by her memories and lack thereof. Not like he was, with his obsession with memories.
Even so, their conversation was inevitable.
He knew it was, and with most of his memories all over the place, he just didn’t want to talk about it. Talking about his lack of memories would only invite questions that he couldn’t answer, questions that he himself wasn’t ready to hear.
‘She doesn’t need to know that this is my third life,’ he concludes, ‘But I’ll tell her about Autumn, otherwise she’ll be too wary of her being so close to me. She already wasn’t happy about me going to Arlanta, either, but Felix managed to get his foot in the door negotiation-wise.’
Felix opens the door, allowing him to poke his head in and see his sister and her playmate.
“Athy, can I play with you?” Athan asked rather sweetly with a smile. “Big sis Verena wanted to talk to Lucas.”
“Of course, Athan!” Athy cheered, smile wide and clearly fake.
Lucas only raised a brow at the odd request from Autumn, but Athan supposed it was justified. Lucas was an outlier, and Autumn wanted to figure out if he really is an unrelated person to this world.
Maybe he’s a transmigrator like them, Athan truthfully considered. Like an OC in fanfics — original characters were a hit or miss with him, but he often made exceptions if he was desperate for a fanfic. Lucas seemed like a cliché self-insert OC — black hair and red eyes, a classic combo that would only be a better fit if he was a mysterious stranger with a tragic backstory…
Focus.
“Why have you been ignoring me?” Athy frowned, puffing up her cheeks in clear displeasure. “Ever since I woke up, you never talk to me like normal!”
“Me ignoring you?!” Athan scoffed. “You’re one to talk! You’ve been acting like I don’t even exist!”
“What?”
“What?” he hissed. “What part of that don’t you understand? You’re the genius here.”
——————————
‘Autumn, where are you?!’ Athanase panicked, calmly taking a sip of tea. ‘How do I deal with your obsessive gay son?!’
‘Bitch — where am I? Where the fuck’re you?!’
Autumn’s thoughts practically screeched at him from across the Marquisate.
——————————
Ferdinand Milford is a surprisingly chatty kid. It often grated on his nerves, but oddly enough, there were moments where he did feel fond of Ferdie’s dumb comments. Maybe the original Athanasios was much more familiar with the guy?
He almost reminded him of Athanasia, whenever she tried to urge him to tag along with her.
How was she adjusting to life without him, especially without the telepathy?
Maybe it’s for the best that he doesn’t know.
——————————
“I don’t get it,” Athanase frowned. “I said the same thing word for word as I remembered, but it only made her angry.”
“Did you do anything different?” Autumn asked.
“Not that I can remember,” he shook his head.
“Well surely you must’ve done something,” Autumn wearily said with a wry smile, finally looking over to him. “Charlotte dislikes men, and yet according to your memories, you and our families were the exceptions.”
“But I really didn’t do anything different…”
“That may be, but you need to remember that you’re not the same person any more. You experienced a childhood where you are loved and cherished. Even if she, too, is cherished by her loved ones, maybe you won’t be able to relate to her at all in this life because you’re no longer the same as you once were.”
He hated that thought — a small part of him desperately wanted to know more about Charlotte.
It was a rather ugly feeling.
“I don’t want that,” he quietly admits. “I want to see her smile.”
“You’re surprisingly stubborn about this,” Autumn blinked.
“I don’t remember much, but she was important to me.”
——————————
“I… don’t want to have a painful death.”
She is a beauty beyond compare, though her face was sickly pale with chapped lips. He tries not to note the lack of red hues her lips used to have, nor did he say much as his hands cupped her cold hands. Her eyes are beautiful, but they are now muted orange-yellow sunsets — he still loves them, he still loves her, but it breaks his heart to see her in so much pain.
“Wouldn’t that be nice? Surely you agree, dear.”
“Yeah,” he quietly says, placing his hand next to her as she laid in bed and watching her weakly bring his hand to cup her cheek.
“Do you think I’m being horrid for thinking my family is selfish, love? For saying such horrid things. Mother and father keep telling me to hold on a little longer and have faith,” she weakly huffed. “Sister-in-law keeps telling me that she’ll find someone to save me, and then my elder brother insists that I’ll survive this ordeal, even though he looks away as though ashamed.”
“No,” he wryly smiles, running his fingers through her long blonde hair, watching as her shoulders relax. “I would say the same, if I were plagued with this cursed affliction without a known cure.”
“Truly, my beloved understands me best,” she smiles in return, and he notices how her eyes grow misty. “Am I terrible, having these bad thoughts? For wanting them to cut it out and be realistic?”
“Of course not,” his eyes softened. “They’re trying to handle the situation by having hope, but it’s hurting you the most.”
“I know they mean well,” she states as tears begin to fall. “But it makes me feel all the more guilty for leaving them.”
“Yeah, I know,” he nods, taking his handkerchief out as he wipes away her tears.
——————————
“I will leave you and the princess be — I won’t even try to covet her holy beast. In exchange, I ask that you don’t interfere with the wish I must grant.”
“And whose wish are you talking about?”
“Why, my princess, of course. Isn’t it obvious?” she smiled at him. “Even if she’s not the same person, I must accomplish what’s been asked.”
——————————
“Would you hate me,” [][][][][][][][][] had started, looking off into the horizon, “If I were to be consumed by my short-sighted quest for revenge? If I abandon my ideals of knighthood in exchange for the power it takes to defeat those who have wronged us? If I were to ever become the monster that I had sought to destroy… what would happen, if I stray?”
He raised his hand to cup [][][][][][][][][]’s cheek, speaking gently, tenderly, “I would kill you myself.”
His eyes softened.
“Good.”
——————————
***
She sits on the windowsill, calm and quiet as the wind brushes through her long pale blonde hair. The weight of her dress fell at her sides, a clear indication that she was skinnier than before. Her face sullen, and the skin of her hands had hugged her so that he could see the bone structure.
So, he dimly thinks as realization creeps up on him as if it had always been a known fact. This was the reason why she was hiding away. Up in a room away from everyone in the mansion.
[][][][][][][][][] twirled a flower between her fingers. If anyone from noble society saw her now, they might actually believe her to be a mere ghost, waiting for her time to come.
“[][][][][][],” he quietly says, watching as his beloved wistfully twirls the flower in her hand.
“Ah. I’ve been caught.”
Despite the nonchalant response, she looked rather guilty.
Guilty about taking off without him, he knows.
“You’re leaving.”
It was not a question.
[][][][][][] doesn’t smile at him, and instead wistfully smiles at the flower in her hand.
A precious and pretty flower that will soon wither away.
(She, too, will wither away.)
“I am glad that it was you who found me, and not another soul, my dove.”
He was speechless.
She was now leaving.
She was now leaving by choice.
“Maybe in another life, we would have had a chance,” [][][][][][] bitterly chuckles, her eyes dull from losing its vibrant shine, her dry pale lips curled like wilted flowers.
The sun was shining behind her, illuminating her presence.
She was beautiful, as always, forever in his eyes.
Always tragically beautiful.
“Maybe next time,” she breathes.
At that moment, she finally looks at him, properly then.
“Maybe next time,” he smiles at her, because that’s what she would want to see in her final moments, and she smiles back, elation clear in her eyes.
That was it, he thinks, that’s the smile he longed to see.
. . .
And then she…
And then, she was gone.
“Maybe next time,” he tells himself, finally crumpling to the ground as the tears pour out and his smile withers away.
Maybe next time, he would’ve had the strength to save her from herself.
Maybe next time.
——————————
‘What the fuck do I do?!’ Autumn internally screamed, clutching her teacup as Claude’s eyes bore into her.
‘Spit it out!’ Athan cried. ‘Spill the tea!’
Without much thought, Verena coughed, her tea spilling onto her.
“Are you okay, Lady Verena?!” Lady Iris, who was seated at her side, immediately reached out her handkerchief to Autumn.
“Ah… my apologies,” Autumn demurely stated, taking the handkerchief calmly, despite the internal screaming that only Athanase could hear. “I didn’t expect the tea to be as bitter as it was, so the fault lies with me…”
“We’ll just have to make sure there’s more sugar next time for you, Lady Verena,” Athan smoothly stated as he smiled at her before looking at Claude who continued to stare on with a frown. “Papa, may I be excused, so I can show Lady Verena where the dressing rooms are?”
Claude didn’t bother to hide his displeasure, as he narrowed his eyes at Autumn with the most loathsome look. “You are to return as soon as you’re done,” he stated with a more neutral look as his focus returned to Athanase, looking rather disinterested despite Felix seeming to hold back a laughing fit. “There will be no delays.”
“Of course, papa!” Athan chirped as he and Autumn left the room.
. . .
“So scary!” Autumn let out a heavy gasp as she leaned against Athan’s shoulder the moment the doors closed. “If looks can kill, I’d be dead again!”
“Chill, bro. You’re overreacting,” Athan rolled his eyes at her dramatics as he snapped his fingers, instantly cleaning the tea stains. She shot him a confused look. “Dad doesn’t know yet, but I’ve been getting better at magic.”
“He’s gonna murder me in cold blood if he finds out I know that fact before him,” Autumn cried, her face getting red and blotchy. “I have to walk on eggshells if I value my life.”
“Yeah, yeah, wallow about my so-called tsundere dad,” Athan shook his head at her dramatics. “I’ll at least walk you to the dressing room before I leave you alone, so you can focus on planning your funeral.”
“How nice,” Autumn pouted, wiping her eyes with the handkerchief Iris gave. “A companion until my demise.”
“Dance with me,” Autumn says, looking at him softly. “Stop thinking about it, about them, and just savour the moment we have in this peace and quiet.”
“…I don’t think I can do that.”
“I understand that you have a broken heart,” Autumn whispered, placing her hand over his. “And you can cry all you’d like, but it helps to grieve over something that wasn’t meant to be bit by bit.”
“…you sound like you’ve had your own heart broken.”
“Yes,” Autumn softly murmured. “My heart never stood a chance.”
When did she get a broken heart? She never told him anything in their past life.
“You sound as if you were in love.”
“I was.”
“Who was it?”
“…someone who had no future.”
——————————
“It’s difficult being bisexual in a noble society where it just doesn’t seem to be the norm,” Verena sighed.
“Try being an actual member of the royal family and bisexual. Athy keeps teasing me about the gentlemen — not sure why she’s not teasing me about my potential suitors, but I’m thankful that she hasn’t,” Athan dryly stated. “What’s up with everyone, anyway? There’s not a single ugly person out of all the people I’ve encountered,” he looked at Verena and wrinkled his nose in distaste. “Including you, too.”
“As a marriage candidate of yours, I suppose I should be grateful you think of me to be attractive,” Autumn pursed her lips, obviously displeased at his compliment. “You’re not a sight for sore eyes either, unfortunately.”
“It’s called having good genes,” Athanase dryly stated. “Is there an actual reason you were wistfully sighing over your sexuality?”
“Lilian York,” Autumn simply stated as Felix awkwardly tried to ignore their conversation. Briefly, Athan pitied the guard, but also, he found it quite amusing to watch him feign ignorance in the aftermath of all his conversations with Autumn.
Felix was interested in Lily, wasn’t he? It would be fun to try and tease him…
But still.
“My nanny?” he raised a brow. “Really?”
“She’s young, she’s single, she’s devoted,” Autumn huffed, placing a hand on her hip. “She’s pretty, she’s very sweet and kind, she’s mother material—”
“—Alright, you’ve made your point,”  he interrupted, pinching the bridge of his nose. “And you’ve also made it abundantly clear that you’ve no interest in anyone in our generation. It’s not like you can make it even more clear.”
He froze.
That sounded like a challenge.
Athan did not intend to challenge her.
For a moment, Autumn is quiet. There’s a sinking feeling in his chest, as if he’ll loathe this conversation for years to come. They make eye contact.
“Don’t—” Athan hissed.
“Duke Robain,” Autumn seriously stated as Felix immediately choked and stared at them in baffled disbelief. Athan didn’t blame him, he would’ve reacted the same way if Autumn mentioned his own father. Even then, his father wouldn’t be too terrible of an answer since Duke Robain was likely in his 50s-60s by now. To an outsider, it would simply make Autumn seem as if she were into grandparents.
She probably would’ve said his father’s name, if she didn’t value her own life. It was fortunate that she gave no fucks after Felix found out about her interests in mothers and fathers.
Still, he made a face, wrinkling his nose as he very much judged her blatant disregard for manners.
“Can you not?”
“Duke Robain.”
He heaved a heavy sigh, deliberately choosing to ignore her as he takes a sip of his tea.
“Duke. Robain.”
“I heard you the first time, and I prefer to leave it at that,” Athan flatly shot back, placing his cup of tea back down. “Now, will you kindly shut up?”
She did not kindly shut up.
“He’s gorgeous, Prince Athanase!” Autumn seemed to practically swoon. “Duke Robain is my ideal man. The silver-grey is a lovely combination with his red hair, and his voice is just—!” Autumn squealed. “And he’s just so gentlemanly.”
“Duke Robain is, what, three times our physical age, now?” he rubbed his temple, feeling a headache creeping in. “And need I remind you that we haven’t even debuted yet, at the very least?”
“He’s only, like, 45, last I recall,” Autumn confidently stated. Well shit, there goes his guess. He keeps forgetting that high society’s wack like that with their marriages and crap. “And Duke Robain has yet to remarry. And you debut in four years — we have time. I need to plan a memorable first meeting!”
“Right…” he slowly spoke, his eyes trailing away from his companion and over to Felix, who appeared very much horrified by the conversation and very much wishing he never heard a word. “Good luck with that, I suppose.”
——————————
“Don’t!” Odysseus had shouted, trying to cover Athanase’s face. “Don’t look!”
“Sir Odysseus…?”
“Please… don’t try to remember.”
As if mocking Odysseus, the flames roared, a scream accompanying it.
And Athan, he… he…
He blacks out.
. . .
Everything ached in a way that felt unfamiliar to him.
He hears the cackling fire and frowns, opening his eyes. The room was getting uncomfortably warm, and he couldn’t move much, nor could he speak.
And that’s when he sees it — a fire burning the building, reaching towards him in an agonizingly slow pace. He tried to break away, only to realize that he was tied to a chair, with a piece of cloth over his mouth.
He tried to squirm, but it was no use—
It was only then that he heard a faint shout, screaming for him.
That very same person had reignited the hope he had lost in the midst of despair.
“[][][][][][][][]! Please, answer me! Your Highness, Prince—”
——————————
“You don’t even like physical labour!” Athan stated in clear exasperation.
“Just  because I don’t want to be a swordsman doesn’t mean I’m not interested  in the art as a writer!” Verena argued back as Athy watched them, taking  a sip of her tea as she watched the two argue. “Besides, knights who  can use magic are sexy and popular in literature nowadays!”
“You  just want to write a love story involving a prince and a knight,” Athan  shot back. “You even wrote that smut fic involving, well, you know.”
“That’s not true! That’s not true!” Verena screeched, covering her ears as she pointedly avoided eye contact.
“Says FFN User Starshine-Dreaming!”
“No,  no, no!” Verena cried. “Drop it! I stopped writing on FFN for a reason,  Athan! When in heavens are you finally going to stop reminding me about  it all?!”
“Who knows,” he flatly responded. “Maybe I’ll  be reminding you for the same length of time that I’ve waited for a  chapter update — several years, bitch.”
“It’s been more than six years! Get over it already, asshole!”
“Six in the previous life, but eight including now!” Athan hissed. “Fourteen years in total, Autumn!”
——————————
“So… I might have fucked up canon this time,” Autumn immediately started the conversation with a pleasant smile on her face.
“Excuse me?” he blinked, taken aback as he looks at her.
“Hari Ernst,” Autumn sheepishly grinned.
“Autumn… what did you do?” he groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Eheh… well, I have a little sister now! Surprise?”
“You didn’t.”
“I did,” she sheepishly nodded, taking a sip of her tea as she avoids eye contact. “Brother and I were out shopping together, we ended up finding Hari, and brother pitied her, so we proposed that maybe we took her into the family. Auntie needs an heiress, last I recall.”
“Dude… didn’t the oldest of the Ernst boys like Hari, even though she practically looks like she could be their sister’s twin with how similar they look to each other? I did not torture myself with reading that damn novel to reach this point, dammit.”
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Autumn nodded. “Besides, didn’t you say that it would be a good idea to befriend the Ernst Family? I hear that they’ll be partaking in the Hunting Competition. Who knows, maybe if the future heiress of the Pompidou Family ends up charming the future Duke of the Ernst Family, we’ll have ourselves a proper alliance by marriage going on.”
“Do you honestly believe, to the gods above, that Eugene would marry into the Pompidou Family?”
“…We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
——————————
“So, my aunt will be adopting Hari — er, Harley — and it turns out, since my uncle refuses to adopt her since she’s from the streets, she’ll remain a Demirci. When Hari — fuck, Harley —inherits the title, she can keep the name.”
“That doesn’t sound plausible to a noble society…”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that. I just opted to talk to His Majesty.”
“You talked to my dad?”
“All I did was mention that you thought Pompidou is a dumb name and that you felt bad that Hari — HARLEY — was going to be called by that name when she gets older. And that it’d make you really happy if she could go by Demirci, so you should maybe act really cute with His Majesty like Her Highness, Princess Athanasia.”
“…right. Also, you know it’s fine to still call her Hari, right? If anyone notices then just say it’s a nickname.”
“…why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“Cause it was funny watching you struggle over something so simple.”
“Wow, what a bitch.”
——————————
“We need to talk.”
Autumn’s smile faltered the moment she heard those words. “Oh no, are we breaking up?”
“What?”
“I swear I’ll change, babe!” Autumn stated, slumping in her seat over the table. “Please don’t leave meeee.”
“Autumn, the fuck’re you on about?”
“You said the classic breakup intro, dude. I had to do it for the sake of our readers. What if they got their hopes up regarding our relationship? No, no! Things like this ought to be clearly defined.”
“…my best friend’s going crazy. Look, nobody would ever ship us — except for maybe a few crazy multi-shippers. Like yourself. Even my sister’s against the very thought of it. She’d rather I start crushing on Ijekiel, and everyone knows how popular I’d be with him! Plus, the majority of our readers don’t want me to end up with a girl.”
“Damn. Way to hurt me right where it hurts the most. I can’t believe I’m un-shippable with my own bestie…”
——————————
“You should be fine,” Autumn snorts, taking a sip from her glass. “Common noble etiquette dictates that you should never approach someone of higher status for a dance. Princess Athanasia is more approachable. Just frown at everyone and you’ll be good.”
“So I should treat them like bugs the same way my dad does,” Athan concluded.
——————————
***
“As you already know by now,” she weakly says, “Athanasios died. In my rewrite, I tried to figure out a way to keep him alive, I wanted to give the twins a happy ending.”
That was surprising — she never told him that.
“No matter what I tried to write, I couldn’t imagine him being alive at the end of Toska. Somehow, or some way, he was going to end up dying. It was the main reason why I stopped posting updates in the first place. I wanted to finish it, though, at least for you, when I found out that you read my story. I wanted to finish rewriting Toska for you, but then you…”
But then he died.
She had no reason to finish her story, if the one she rewrote it for wouldn’t even be there to read it.
“And it was… it was the same. For Athanasios. He…” she refused to look up from her teacup, but he could already see where she was going with this.
“Athanasios died in your rewrite.”
Just like he did.
Verena says nothing, but that alone is enough of an answer.
Athanase slowly nods as dawning realization washes over him. And he remembers that dream, where he spoke to Diana, and the way he moved closer to the ledge.
.
(He feels a twinge of guilt, a pain in his chest, for what he was about to do.)
.
“He jumped from a tower.”
Nothing.
.
(There is something about him that she sees, and he knows this, because there is a moment that her soft smile crumples. Tears pour out as his mother becomes distraught, sadness splashing him in waves, but he stands still — unyielding. He finally takes a step closer to the balcony, hands touching the cold stone.)
.
“And he chose to do it. He wasn’t pushed, he wasn’t threatened, he wasn’t manipulated, he wasn’t in any danger.”
His throat felt dry.
He knows.
“It was a deliberate choice. Athanasios… he wanted to die.”
.
(An image of Diana standing on the balcony, crying as she tries to stop her son who only shakes his head and smiles, who tells her “I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough.”
The sensation of stepping on the ledge, ignoring his silently crying mother.)
.
“Athanasios got tired of living,” he quietly says.
Verena closes her eyes, tears spilling forth as she never looks at him. She says nothing, again, as he figures it all out, slowly and verbally voicing the thoughts aloud, a sick and twisted feeling rising from within.
He feels nauseous.
.
(An image of long black hair whirling in the wind comes to mind, high up on a rooftop, staring up at the darkening skies above. Lips curling up into a smile as they ignored the painful aches of their bones. The feeling of freedom just within their reach…)
.
“I got tired of living.”
And it should be alarming, really, but it doesn’t surprise him.
He always believed that he wasn’t the sort of person to just… jump to end his life, and yet he did — he has, he had, he might. With a compelling enough reason, it was a magical excuse to end it all.
It just so happened that wanting death was reason enough.
.
(“I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough. Maybe next time.”)
.
In his previous life — lives, maybe — he wanted to die.
She doesn’t need to tell him the reason why she never finished the rewrite anymore. He did exactly what Athanasios had done. It must’ve felt terrible, reading your own writing meant for a friend who died, only for that very person to die in the same exact way, albeit in different circumstances and situations, in different places and times.
But for the same reasons.
It still happened, even if he never thought he would consider…
.
(He died.)
.
“You did,” Verena softly confirmed, but she didn’t really have to, not after his memory was steadily returning with more clarity and pain. “And that’s why you died in our last life together.”
People are complicated. They’re irrational or logical, fuelled by motivations or lack thereof. They’re complicated, righteous or morally grey, or downright psychotic or had been sane this whole time. Their actions could be done for stupid or convoluted reasons that most just wouldn’t be able to recognize from the get go.
The answers can be difficult to answer, because sometimes a reason why things happen include multiple issues, little things that build up over time.
And sometimes, the answer he’s been looking for really is as simple as that:
“You were tired, Athanase.”
.
(“I’m… tired.”)
Alright then, since this is the last chance I’ll have to talk about it on its own, let’s have a look at episode 20, shall we?
I’m just rewatching it before the new Ep., since I had a lot I wanted to talk about, but couldn’t really focus.
*the following contains spoilers for Gundam: Witch From Mercury episode 20 (and 19)*
*Talk about imagery of Prospera destroying multiple other Lfrith frames and how that corresponds with suletta and Eri.* -(awk. Seems I left some notes here)
First off, I’m gonna nip back to episode 19, where Prospera destroys the Lfrith Prototypes (mass production lfrith’s?). I find this interesting for two reasons; One, the consequences of Prospera starting a firefight to cover this are kinda massive (ie episode 20), especially since it throws GUND-arm inc to the wolves, screwing over her daughter’s friends for her own gain. Second, these are machines that Prospera has worked on. These are the machines she built with Dr. Cardo Nabo. Her destroying them is her violently destroying aspects of her past. Furthermore, it parallels with Eri and Suletta. Assuming that the Multiple Eri’s Suletta saw are just representative, it shows Prospera destroying her older children in favour of Aerial, because she doesn’t need them. She doesn’t need the Lfrith’s like she doesn’t need suletta, and it cements her as a Char to me. She doesn’t actively wish harm or dislike suletta, she just finds something else more important, and thus abandons her. It’s a very charlike thing to do, at least to me.
But the first point is also very notable, because basically all of Norea’s actions in Ep 20 are down to Prospera. Due to Prospera causing the fight on Earth, not only is Shaddiq forced to move, but Norea loses it and goes on a full-on rampage in the school. Norea meets a violent end in response to Prospera’s direct actions, and her attacking the school could very easily have led to Suletta being killed, heck, if she’d been standing slightly to the right, she would’ve. Prospera told Suletta to go back to the school and live out her dreams, in a *safe* environment, but because of Prospera, the school is no longer safe. It’ll be very interesting to see Prospera’s reaction when she finds out about this, though of course she won’t realise the connection. I expect she either won’t even blink, or when she finds out Suletta survived she’ll rationalise it easily.
Elan 5 being a coward was not something I expected to be this relevant. Huh. Kinda a parallel with Guel. They both lose someone in combat that they care deeply about, and then (presumably) go and become a better person after the fact. It’s also interesting that this is essentially the first time we’ve seen any development with Elan 5, where he’s actually cared about something and not just been evasive.
Guel and Shaddiq’s big showdown, while great, I don’t really have a whole lot to say about, other than notice the ms differences and wonder how that’s gonna show on the model kits.
Lauda had a really bad time in this ep, which is…. Something? On one hand, that sucks for him, but I fully expect him to either die or get character development, so………yay?
Other general points:
It’s nice to see the Beguir-Pente’s seeing more use.
Weird thing to notice, but the Asticassia school bell sounds super nice. Just a lovely noise.
Anyone else think that that fight between Guel and Shaddiq ended similarly to Gundam Thunderbolt (December Sky)? Maybe I’m reading too much into the mutual kill.
Is it me, or does the Michaelis have a subtly different head design? Maybe it’s just the shot.
I’m honestly kinda annoyed we got so many great shots of the Lfrith Thorn this episode, since it got wrecked. Though both it and the gunvolva’s were very evocative at the end, intercut with the devastation of the school.
Not to sound like one of those asshole fans who are all like “oh, the REAL Gundam starts here”, but I do expect Asticassia’s destruction to shake up things quite a bit, and with Shaddiq pushing for the Space Assembly League AND Belmiria about to blow the whole Quiet Zero thing wide open I’m curious as to if things are gonna end up in a full-scale brawl.
Shaddiq also states “we’ll use the witch for as long as we can”. I’m assuming he’s talking about Norea here. Kinda hypocritical of him, and it shows that he’s fundamentally no different than those others who would exploit Norea.
Shaddiq says “weren’t you told to secure your target before you’re suspected”? So, does he have a mole in cathdra? Or is he just good a predicting?
Lastly, Petra. I’ve seen a lot of people drawing her with GUND Prosthetics or expecting her to have survived, but honestly? I think she’s dead. Her running and saying what she wanted to do makes it seem like she’s going to actually die here.
It’s probably too early for The Meta No One Asked For That I’m Gonna Write Anyway about XQC, alas…here we go
Dr. Xie Qingcheng, 32, male, straight (so far), 180 cm with only one current family member.
Xqc is introduced as a cold, aloof and apathetic retired doctor who has no passions, cares about nothing except for his sister, and unless he’s angry, you can barely get an emotional response out of him.
Through meatbun’s character notes on how he has no favorite food, no favorite color or animal, no personal preferences outside what’s most practical and how he’s very very responsible and rules abiding and honest and sober and serious, and through he yu’s POV that continuously paints him as this heartless cold blooded person, I dare say we were…deceived by this so far shades of gray picture we had of him.
Xqc was born into a finically stable middle class family consisting of two cops for parents and a younger sister that came into the world 8 years after him. When he turned 13, and his sister was only 5 at that time, his parents were fired from their job due to a case they shouldn’t have been investigating going wrong, and they had to move to a rural area. Not long after that, he witnessed both his parents’ deaths and saw their corpses with his own eyes, the site was bloody and there’s no way it didn’t traumatize a pre-teen like him. He then was tasked with taking care of his sister, becoming a doctor despite not wanting to, owing others favors and spending all his money on smth that’s yet to be revealed instead of enjoying it. He got married, not to a woman he loves but to someone whom he thought of as “suitable and appropriate”, got cheated on and went through a divorce before losing full interest in the marriage life. He was finally able to retire (we don’t know why yet) and live a quiet, normal, boring life.
I believe xqc loved his parents, I believe he loved them so much cause in chapter 20, he mentions how he thought he wouldnt be able to live past the grief, he wouldn’t be able to go on or move forward, how the grief completely overtook him. He also mentions how he used to play with knots and handcuffs when he was a child, which shows how close he was to them. So for a child who had a good stable life with two loving parents to suddenly fall from a class to a class, suddenly lose both parents and see their corpses with his own eyes, that must’ve fucked him up big time. I’m talking “when can I fully register all of this” kind of fucked up. But he didn’t have time to fully absorb all of this, didnt have the time to sit down and cry, he had a sister, she was only 5, where will they get the money from? What were they gonna do? How was he going to continue school while caring for her? He didn’t have the time to sit down and grief, to sit down and adjust. For a child who had a normal life and didn’t have to worry much about the money like every other middle class kid, he was suddenly burdened with poverty AND loss, and duty and responsibility. Good bye to the days of playing with handcuffs and knots huh?
You ask me, why does xqc not have a favorite food? I answer you, because many many nights, he didn’t know what to feed his sister, much less himself. Cause I bet that many nights, he would have to give up his portion for Xie Xue, to make sure a kid like her is full. Cause he couldn’t afford to be picky, couldn’t afford to choose; whatever was edible will be eaten, taste and flavor be damned. He had to start working from a young age, balance school, babysitting and working all at once. The last friend he made (I think) was that Chen Man guy whose parents were friends with his parents, back when they were alive and life was good. He didn’t have time to make friends, or go out, or have a favorite color or visit the zoo and decide on a favorite animal. No, he had to study, and study hard to become more financially stable and support Xie Xue, he had to raise his baby sister and protect her, he had to work or else how will he put food on their table? Yet he never lost his soft kind heart, cause when his sister asked for a laptop, he bought her one just so that she wouldn’t feel less than any of the other children.
Xqc had to SURVIVE, he had to make do with what he had and what he didn’t have. He didn’t have time to sit down and cry or process his trauma, didn’t even have time to think of adolescent love or his youthful days or do what kids his age did. And all of that carried forward into his adult life. He pushed his emotions back so hard and had his practical, business like mind take care of everything in order to make it through the days. He started to believe that passionate emotions such as love and hate and lust and desire were all a waste of time, a distraction from his duties, smth that will rock the delicate balance he created with his everyday busy schedule. Emotions will stunt you, emotions will delay you, crying and not going to work today means no food to feed his hungry sister with. That’s when he started thinking, strong emotions are a DISEASE, they will take up your time, cloud your judgement, have you make reckless decisions that you’ll regret later. And he couldn’t afford any of that right? Strong emotions are for the weak, they put you in crutches and disable you from moving forward. Wasnt that what he told his ex wife? If he had submitted himself to his grief back then, where would his sister be? Where would he be? How could they have grown up to be healthy and successful adults?
So this man taught himself practicality and duty and priorities. He stopped thinking about himself, about what he wants and what he feels, and instead started making sure that those around him are happy and content and safe and well taken care of. He no longer had desires or passions, he only had rules and regulations. If a person lost their sense of taste, would they still want chocolates and burgers? Would they still have cravings and foods they’d rather swallow medicine than eat? No. If so, how will they decide on what to eat every day? They’ll simply start following a “perfect nutritional plan” and “balanced diet”. They’d eat what they have to eat, when they have to eat, and in the exact portion they need. To them eating would be another chore they have to do every day to keep their bodies going. Similarly, with xqc, graduating, working, marrying, taking care of his sister and auntie, these all became “tasks” and “chores” that he had to abide by and follow. They became the dietary plan for his life till he dies, the outline he shall follow, the textbook rules he will carry out, no need to think of what he “wants” or “desires”, what will make him “happy” or bring him “joy”. He no longer listened to his emotions when making decisions. Even when marrying his ex wife, he married her cause she was “a suitable match”, not for her looks or personality or anything. Feelings are life’s taste buds, and once you remove them, everything becomes tasteless and mundane, and practicality/logic takes over. He stopped knowing what it felt like to choose based on your preferences, cause he stopped having the luxury of choice ever since that night when he was 13, and he no longer was able to re-teach himself the meaning of free will and choice.
So when he yu, in chapter 20, asked him how he would’ve acted if Xie Xue had died, and he said, “I would’ve continued living as I am today till my last breath,” he wasn’t being “cold” or “heartless” or “indifferent” as he yu likes to say. He was being practical and methodical and thinking with a logical approach, rather than an emotional one, just the way he taught himself to throughout all these years. His almost 2 decades of pure survival mode and severely repressed feelings spoke in the form of autopilot. “I would do what I have to do, what I’ve always done every day of my life so far cause what choice do I have?” Is what he meant to say.
But I believe that he’s a soft hearted, kind and loving person. He never says no his sister, never says no to his auntie, helped that homeless man as best as he could, taught he yu that he was normal and that he wasn’t a monster, believed in treating his patients with words instead of medicine prescriptions, believed that the mentally ill deserve to live normally instead of being locked up. I believe that underneath all the shit he has buried, there’s a lot of passion and love that’s been kept dormant for 19 years.
In conclusion, idk where meatbun is gonna take his character but I genuinely hope he gets to heal, and start having more color and flavor in his life. Start allowing himself to live, not just survive.
Things from Anne with an e that I feel like writing down
Season 2 Episode 3: The True Seeing Is Within
1. I haven’t done one of these is so long
2. The opening will always be so good I hardly ever skip it unless I’m binging the show
3. Anne’s handwriting
4. Sometimes when Anne stares at things in shock and they get really close to her face she looks like a frog in a cute way
5. Consistent close ups on her mouth as she talks
6. Tripping Nate’s trap without even realizing what’s going on
7. “Not an adventure, per say-“
8. Anne promising to be calm and then running out the door yelling
9. Matthew and Marilla making decisions on the farm together
10. Aunt Josephine forcing the Barrys to bring Anne
11. I always thought the borders took the gun as they were fleeing the house but they actually stole it far in advance woah
12. I actually feel really bad for Dunlop. Nate is just a bad person, Jonesy genuinely likes the town and the cuthberts despite lying to them and wants to stay where he feels at home
13. You can’t hide anything from Marilla apparently
14. Clever cover up from Nate as to why he was in Anne’s room
15. I hate Nate but boy he’s a good actor and manipulator
16. Minnie May shoving her face against the window
17. Anne nearly out-logicing Mr Barry about the finances of gold
18. “Mr Barry doesn’t usually discuss our finances. Today’s your lucky day Anne.”
19. Minnie May is a terrible little child I love her
20. Poor poor Jerry
21. Jerry’s family is catholic
22. Back when people hated the French not as a joke
23. Despite being terrified of these men, Jerry never once gives in to them. He removes himself from the situation as swiftly as possible but never once lets them get their way
24. Jerry and Anne just go up in the barn and cry why is the barn a popular crying spot
25. Jerry still has guilt for losing that money even months later, blaming himself for the cuthberts financial hardship even though they probably would’ve needed borders regardless
26. “You didn’t do anything wrong, my son.”
27. I always find it really interesting seeing the progression from Marilla refusing to even talk to Jerry to him being part of the family, another child of theirs even though he also has his own family
28. Marilla and Matthew can communicate so much through so little spoken words
29. Aunt Josephine!!!!! And her definitely gay butler
30. “It’s a letter sir. The one we’ve just discussed. At length. Moments ago.”
31. The girls spelling so Minnie May can’t understand them
32. The watch and brooch together in the pawn shop window
33. “Something that doesn’t bore me to tears! This velvet has absolutely no drape.” Me in the fabric store too tbh
34. “This feels like a cat! Meow!”
35. When Mrs Barry is upset with her husband she just starts redecorating???
36. Malcolm Frost is quite the interesting side character. He’s only there for a brief few minutes in one episode of one season, but you get a sense of his entire story in that short time without them really having to explain all of it to you. He also gives Anne a half filled journal, something that will no doubt influence her in her ventures. He’s one of those people that will always be significant in her life despite barely doing anything
37. The girls have been told so many lies that they’ve gaslighted themselves into believing it
38. 1 ton of gold reaps 40 cents. 2000 pounds accumulated from small traces in the soil is only enough to buy 2 dozen eggs despite the digging cost being several hundred DOLLARS
39. “But we don’t buy our eggs, we have chickens.” A 40 cent turnover for hundreds of dollars in digging is already a terrible deal but this line shows just how truly useless it would be to a farming town
40. Anne finally putting the pieces together
41. “Who have you been listening to recently. Everyone around here? Or that person in here. Hmm?” “I’m a child, Mr. Frost.” “Poppycock. Children are pure instinct. You should’ve trusted yourself.”
42. “Take notes as you explore your life.”
43. Anne is so bewilderingly strange that she manages to make even the most cynical of people feel a little better about the world
44. Minnie May and the officer saying bye to each other feels like improve it’s so natural and funny
45. “Public house” aka pub aka bar
46. Elizabeth Barry threatens their friendship part 354656465
47. The way they have dried herbs hanging upside down in sprigs instead of stored in bottles is pretty interesting
48. Mr Dunlop making a pie for Anne, genuinely excited for her to come back
49. The way the audio feels underwater when Anne is in a panicked daze, her own heartbeat louder than those around her
50. Anne being concerning quiet, tipping them off that she knows
51. The pie falling, any ‘friendship’ with the borders destroyed
52. “I believe you Anne.” More development from episode 1 where Marilla assumed every word out of her mouth was a lie
53. The grifters escaping in broad daylight, yet Matthew and Jerry are so busy working they don’t even notice
54. Matthew letting Jerry go home to his family early
55. Jerry’s little smile when he finds out the borders are leaving
56. Anne snd Marilla can’t even communicate properly, but getting up when tied like that requires the two people to really work together and they’re still able to get up and outside
57. Using the farm bell to get Matthew’s attention
58. Matthew checking for the gun and Marilla’s first thought being Anne’s safety when it’s discovered stolen
59. Jerry accidentally crossing paths with them again, finally realizing who they are
60. Jerry standing up to fight them again. He doesn’t win this time either, but he did charge at Nate head on this time and he also stalled their progress in escaping, leading to the capture of Mr Dunlop. He didn’t win, but he did stand up for himself and that’s what character development is all about
61. “I never liked you.”
62. Dunlop demanding all the money or threatening to shoot Nate, all on the grounds of him turning the cuthberts against him. Despite being a liar, he’s still terribly lonely and wanted a place to call home making him a very sympathetic villain
63. Anne’s apron getting discarded in the woods like it’s trash
64. “They liked me. Everyone, they liked me!”
65. “There is no me and you! Am taking the money, and I’m gonna buy a house with land somewhere beautiful!”
66. “At least this time I tried to stop them.” “You’re a good lad Jerry, well done.”
67. William realizing just how much trouble he’s put his family in by not listening to those around him
68. Matthew taking Jerry home
69. Packing up all the things Nate left behind
70. Anne genuinely telling Jerry what he did was brave and hugging him, and then walking away stiffly as if she didn’t just do that. She bullies him a lot but when we he’s in actual danger she does really care, and considering they had the gun, they could’ve done a lot worse to Jerry than knock him out
71. Despite being bitter about Nate, she’s still going to learn from both his book and this experience and
72. “All we can do is our best Marilla. Regardless of what we know or don’t know. I believe there’s always a bit of good in every situation, even a bad one. I think it builds character!”
73. Gilbert getting the letter about the gold AFTER this whole fiasco I’d painful irony
meet cute number 47 is interesting!
send me a writting ask
47. Texting the incorrect number but continuing the conversation.
“You got all that, right?” Shinsou asks, readjusting his stance, so others can leave their classroom door easily.
Midoriya hums absentmindedly. He’s still quickly jotting down the last few digits onto his planner. “And, you said tomorrow morning, around 7? At the library?”
“Yeah,” Shinsou shrugs, “Or anytime really. The deadline isn’t until next month, you know.”
“I kinda just want to get it done, as soon as possible.”
Shinsou breathes out a snort. “Figured you’d say that much. Just make sure you got my number. Repeat it, if you need to.”
“No time.” Midoriya drops his bag to the side, shoving his now closed notebook inside. “Thank you! I’ll text you later tonight!” He offers hurriedly, before taking off down the campus halls.
Shinsou’s warning falls deaf to his rushed mind.
He has to run the entire way, in order to graciously catch the last bus for the hour. Sweaty and flushed, Midoriya slumps into his seat in relief. Fortunately, he was able to cop a seat for himself, settling by the window and his backpack right next to him.
Staring out, Midoriya tries to remind himself of the rest of his priorities he needed to do.
He still needed to start on Doctor Chiyo’s online Physiology exam, and gather his notes for the open book portion. It was a bit bothersome to handle tests online, but if the rest of class prefers it, there’s nothing Midoriya can do about it.
Speaking of which, Ochako had requested for copies of those exact same notes, since apparently she barely writes anything during lectures. He wants to suggest to her to just simply take better notes, but alas, he will gladly help her out.
And, finally, Midoriya has to collect reliable, approved research articles for his and Shinsou’s debate, in their argumentative project in Communications. Being assigned “PRO SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE”, while being the most uninvolved people on the internet, Midoriya and Shinsou had a lot of work to do.
Not to mention it was already 18:00 by the time he reached the school’s dormitories. And yet, he needed to shower, make dinner, water his plants, and watch the newest episode of his favorite drama, airing tonight.
University was eating him alive.
Thankfully, he’s able to complete half of his list.
He finishes the exam with a 98%, and quickly snaps the pages of his notes over to Ochako and Iida, making sure to highlight the main topics questioned in the exam. Ochako sends a ‘thank you’ gif, and Iida texts a long, yet endearing message of gratitude.
Midoriya doesn’t have time to shower, instead blasting the TV volume loud, as he waters his indoor plants at the same time. He overwaters them a little bit, busy glancing back at the screen for too long. But, at least he’s able to watch the episode. He pouts when it ends on a cliffhanger, almost drowning his bonsai tree in frustration.
He’s only able to warm up a plate of leftovers, and read through only one research article, by the time it’s already blinking 21:30 on his phone. Sighing, Midoriya closes his laptop and grabs his cell phone instead.
An all nighter wasn’t preferable. But, if Shinsou is working overtime at his late night job, Midoriya supposes he can stay up and keep looking through more articles, until he has at least the required ten.
Flipping open his planner, Midoriya inputs Shinsou’s number into his phone. He adds his name, a contact photo of him sleeping, and finally taps a quick message.
(21:38) < You working?
When Shinsou doesn’t respond right away, Midoriya simply sets aside his phone on his desk. Stretching his arms, he sighs in defeat, now expecting Shinsou to be stuck at work.
He’s never worked at a restaurant, but he bets Friday nights can get pretty busy. And, Shinsou always complains that group outings and dates tend to stay over, even after the place is supposed to close. And, Midoriya trusts his word.
So, by the time his phone dings, Midoriya has been clicking through more articles on social media, bookmarking a few to go over later, as he went.
He lifts his phone, and with a bright screen, a message stares back at him.
shinsou hitoshi (21:58) > Who’s this
Oh, he did forget to specify. But, Midoriya smiles, having a small prank in mind. There was no harm in teasing his friends, let alone Shinsou, who definitely needed a good laugh, now and then.
(21:58) < It's the cutie from your communications class ;)
shinsou hitoshi (21:58) > So, no one
(21:59) < Haha! I guess you’re right about that
(21:59) < Anyways, it’s Izuku! You still working late, Hitoshi?
shinsou hitoshi (21:59) > This ain’t Hitoshi
Midoriya's face drops, blinking. Oh god, did he mistype the number?
(21:38) < Wait, you’re not???
Another text pops up, shortly after.
shinsou hitoshi (22:02) > You got the wrong number
Embarrassment burning his entire face red, Midoriya wishes he could delete himself from the world.
(22:03) < I’m so so so so sorry!
(22:03) < God, I thought I wrote down my friend’s number right
(22:03) < But, I was in this stupid rush to get on the bus that I didn’t make sure
(22:04) < And, listen, if I had missed that bus, I would’ve had to wait
(22:04) < Not like a few minutes wait
(22:04) < Like, a whole two hours wait!
shinsou hitoshi (22:05) > I didn’t ask
Deleting the conversation, Midoriya erases the new contact completely. And instead, he looks back to his planner, and retypes the numbers in his phone onto a new conversation.
Hopefully, he has typed the correct series of digits.
(22:07) < Hey, Hitoshi! It’s Izuku
unknown (22:08) > ...
unknown (22:08) > What the actual fuck
unknown (22:08) > You've still got the wrong number, you goddamn idiot
Slamming his phone onto his desk, Midoriya grabs a pillow off his bed and shoves it in his face. The temptation to scream sounds awfully pleasant, but it’s too late at night to do so. His dorm neighbors would definitely wonder what the hell is wrong with him.
What’s wrong? Oh, he has completely done one of the most dreaded imaginary scenarios in his head; text a complete stranger. Twice.
What was he supposed to do now? Never text back? Delete it? Block it?
How is he supposed to contact Shinsou now?
His phone dings again.
Lifting the pillow off his face slightly, Midoriya eyes his phone warily from his swivel chair.
That definitely wasn’t supposed to happen. Another text from the same stranger sounds a bit unheard of.
After a seconds-long hesitation, Midoriya lifts his phone and opens it once more.
unknown (22:13) > Double check next time
unknown (22:13) > You can fucking wait the two hours, dumbass
Midoriya grows a little irked. He has a bad feeling that his stranger isn’t too friendly, to say that least.
There was literally no reason to text back something so rude.
(22:14) < Well, that wasn’t nice
unknown (22:15) > Wasn’t trying to be
(22:15) < ..Are you always like this?
unknown (22:16) > Pretty much
(22:16) < That’s sad
unknown (22:17) > What’s fucking sad is that I was woken up from my sleep
unknown (22:17) > Because a damn moron didn’t write down the right number
Midoriya winces. He hadn’t even thought about the other person’s predicament, let alone if he had interrupted anything.
(22:20) > I really didn’t mean to do that, I’m sorry :(
unknown (22:22) > Yeah whatever
(22:24) > You should try to go back to sleep, then
unknown (22:25) > I was
unknown (22:25) > But the same moron from before keeps texting me
(22:27) > Who?
(22:33) > Oh.
(22:33) > It’s me, huh?
unknown (22:34) > No shit
(22:35) > Right, of course. My bad!
(22:35) > I’m going to just stop now
unknown (22:36) > Thanks
(22:36) > For the umpteenth time, sorry! ><
(22:37) > Okay, Okay! I’m stopping now, for real
Midoriya desperately needs to call it a night.
After going through his nightly routine, he slips under his bedsheets, exhausted. He sets an alarm for 5:00 on his phone, hoping Shinsou will show up at the library, regardless of the missing confirmation text on Midoriya’s end.
He keeps his phone on awhile longer, swiping through his professors’ emails, before a surprising text notification pops in front of him.
unknown (23:01) > FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
(23:02) > …
(23:02) > What was that for??
unknown (23:04) > I CAN’T SLEEP
unknown (23:04) > GOD, I CAN’T GO BACK TO FUCKING SLEEP
unknown (23:05) > AND IT’S YOUR FAULT
(23:06) > What do you expect me to do????
unknown (23:07) > HAHAHAHA OH DON’T WORRY
unknown (23:07) > IF I CAN’T SLEEP, NEITHER CAN YOU
unknown (23:08) > AND IF YOU TURN YOUR PHONE OFF I WILL SEND HELLFIRE
(23:09) > Wait
(23:09) > No, please
(23:09) > My alarm is on my phone, I need it on
(23:10) > I need to go to an important meeting for a group project at 7:00!
unknown (23:10) > Aw, really? :0?!
(23:11) > Yeah! I really do!
unknown (23:11) > Sike. I don’t fucking care
unknown (23:12) > Hope you eat shit tomorrow
(23:13) > ..Why are you like this?
(23:13) > I could literally be a twelve year old, for all you know
unknown (23:14) > I doubt fucking twelve years do group projects
unknown (23:15) > But whether you’re a damn infant, or grown adult, I hate you
(23:16) > I wouldn’t say I hate you. That’s too harsh
(23:16) > But, wow, you are very unlikable :/
unknown (23:17) > That’s the fucking nicest thing anyone has said about me
(23:18) > It wasn’t supposed
(23:19) > Nevermind.
(23:19) > Do you have any friends? Just might as well ask
unknown (23:21) > Surprisingly yeah
(23:22) > Oh, so you also agree. That it’s a surprise
(23:22) > At least you’re self aware :0
unknown (23:23) > Yeah, they are annoying as hell
unknown (23:24) > But, also pretty good people, I guess
(23:25) > Pretty good or pretty dumb?
unknown (23:26) > SHUT IT
unknown (23:27) > Only I can make fun of them
unknown (23:27) > You. Don’t.
(23:28) > You’re right, I shouldn’t have said that
(23:29) > I’m sorry :(
unknown (23:30) > You like apologizing, huh
(23:29) > There’s a lot to apologize for tonight
unknown (23:30) > Still, you don’t have to say it every damn minute
(23:32) > You probably don’t ever apologize
unknown (23:33) > Fuck no
(23:35) > Right, of course
(23:36) > Well, you know what I need to do tomorrow
unknown (23:37) > Unfortunately
(23:38) > What about you?
unknown (23:39) > I’m covering a shift at my shit job at the ass crack of dawn
(23:40) > Unnecessary visual, but I digress
(23:40) > Uh, where do you work?
unknown (23:42) > No. I don’t even know your damn name
(23:43) > I told you?? It was in my first text
unknown (23:44) > Yeah, I ain’t scrolling
(23:48) > Well, it’s Izuku. Midoriya Izuku :)
unknown (23:49) > Great. I still ain’t giving you mine
(23:50) > ?? Is there anything I can know about you??
(23:50) > You know more about me, than I do about you
unknown (23:51) > You know I hate you
unknown (23:51) > That’s plenty
(23:52) > But, I have been staying up for you :(
unknown (23:53) > Because it’s your fault I can’t sleep
(23:54) > You aren’t feeling sleepy yet?
unknown (23:56) > ..Are you
(23:57) > I asked you first
unknown (23:58) > I asked you second
(23:59) > That
(23:59) > Look, it’s almost midnight
(24:00) > Oh, now, it’s actually midnight
unknown (00:01) > I have fucking eyes. I can see the time
(00:02) > And we BOTH have places to be tomorrow
(00:02) > So, let’s just sleep. Call a truce, please
unknown (00:03) > What about my petty retribution
(00:04) > PLEASE LET ME SLEEP
unknown (00:10) > FUCK
unknown (00:10) > FINE
unknown (00:11) > I STILL CAN’T SLEEP BUT WHATEVER
unknown (00:12) > HOPE YOU FUCKING OVERSLEEP TOMORROW
The rest of the night, Midoriya hears his phone go off, but he doesn’t bother to open the messages. Fortunately for him, the time staying awake quickly catches up to his body, the moment he shuts his eyes. And, in an instant, he falls asleep, heavy.
However, he’s jolted awake by the ringing of his phone, the tone alerting him of an incoming phone call. Banging his head on the headboard, Midoriya blindly grabs and answers his phone. “Uh, H-Hello?” He blurts quickly.
“Tch.” A low voice emits, “You owe me, Deku.”
Click. The phone call ends.
Confused, Midoriya hurriedly rubs his eyes open. Running his messy curls through his fingers, he lifts his bangs up, in order to correctly look at the time.
The time was 5:10. And, his 5:00 alarm had been off the entire time.
And, instead, that same unknown number from last night was his saving grace.
type of writing: head canons !!
this is part of my head canon series, flour & fluff !!
tag list is open !! go to this google form and fill it out to sign up!
series synopsis: owning a bakery at 20 is tough; even more so when you have to handle members of two opposing organizations! this is your journey to meeting these fools and creating an unlikely bond with each of them! but only at the cost of your peace and sanity.
fandom: bungou stray dogs
content: fluff & platonic stuff
author’s notes: this will be a multiple part series of head canons and this is only part one! this series will include both the agency and port mafia members, and then something special for the end. maybe i’ll even write a real one shot/scenario for it. if there’s enough interest, i might open up a tag list for this! i hope you all enjoy!! <33
also, ranpo is 25 in this part; kenji, atushi, kyouka, and the tanizaki siblings aren’t part of the agency yet, only yosano, kunikida, and dazai are, but in the next couple parts, it will be established that the tanizakis are
meeting the greatest detective
your bakery, Sakura’s, which you named after your late grandmother (who was also your guardian), went into business when you were 18 right after graduating high school
who needed a culinary course when you were trained by dear ol grandma?
your grandmother died when you were 16, just as you started your second year of high school
you were devastated of course, but you knew she wouldn’t want you to wallow over it too long
so in those last two hard years of high school, you took part time jobs at other bakeries and saved lots and lots of money
by graduation, using your life savings, the money your grandmother had left for you, and all the money you earned working, you were able to buy the small building—with a reasonable amount of money left over to survive— you and your grandmother had been eyeing back in her hometown, yokohama, to start your bakery
the building was a bit run down, but you were planning to give it a makeover anyways
it was a bit smaller compared to other buildings around, only having two stories, but on the plus side, the second floor had taller ceilings and was an apartment
is that realistic? probably not but bare with me here
aNYWHO
you finished putting your bakery up in about 4 months, then finished up your apartment 2 more after
you opened Sakura’s at 7 in the morning then closed at 8 in the evening
when you first started, you did quite well!!
especially with those who went to work on early mornings and families
the time when you first opened was the most peaceful, but you admitted that it was a bit boring, and you wished for a bit more excitement
and boy, the day edogawa ranpo stepped into your bakery was the catalyst for the chaos and excitement that was soon to come
not that you knew that
if you did you would’ve never let him in
maybe
you were 19 when ranpo discovered Sakura’s, and it was completely accidental
he finished solving a case and was on the way back to the agency, and he—not surprisingly—got lost and then it started to rain really hard
it was pouring; there was even the cliche thunder strike and everything
you saw the brown clad man across the street and you ran out with two umbrellas (almost getting hit by a car mind you) handed one to him and practically dragged him inside
with the heavy rain on the forecast, Sakura’s was empty, so you gently pushed him down on a chair and you rushed away to find towels
even though the two of you had umbrellas, the two of you were still soaked
finding said towels, you quickly dried yourself the best you could then you draped your towel over your back and rushed over to give him his as well as a warm pastry and your special hot honey lemon tea
ranpo laughed as you placed down the refreshment and snack, thinking that you knew who he was and was giving him special treatment
poor bby blinked and went :0 when you said you didn’t
“you don’t know who i am?”
“no. am i supposed to?”
“...”
the 25 year old blanked and you worried that you broke him and started to apologize profusely
he cut you off claiming that he got over it he didnt but seeing as the bakery was empty and it was pouring pretty badly, he demanded you give him all your attention sit with him so he could tell you all about himself and what he’s done
the two of you got along quite well
you were amazed with all the stories he’s told you
you honestly acted like a cute little kid listening to fairytales
he told you that and in response you threw a napkin at him
“wow ranpo-san! that’s amazing!!”
“you look like a little kid”
cue the napkin
he was happy with all the attention, praise, and sweets you gave him
the agency gave him praise sure, and made sure he had a lot of snacks but it was refreshing to have someone give him this much and your treats were the best he’s ever had
after he told you all his most interesting cases, the two of you just rambled about the most randomest things; going from the best desserts and snacks to the stupidest things his coworkers have done
you guys were on that last topic for a while
you two talked and rambled for hours, and when it hit hour two and the rain was still pouring, you just went ahead and slipped the “we’re open” sign to “closed” even though it was only 2 o’clock
you thought that this was probably the loving goofy older brother relationship that you missed out on
“ranpo-san, you’re kind of like the brother i’ve never had”
“and you’re still like that little kid”
cue another napkin to the face
don’t worry, he already adores you <3
he just likes to make fun of you </3
*cuts you off as you’re talking to squish your cheeks* “(y/n) you still have a lot of baby fat and you’re pretty short...are you sure you’re still not in high school or smth??”
*incoherent talking due to pressure on cheeks* “ranpo-san you have 3 seconds before i kick you out”
at around 6, the rain came to a stop and by then, the both of you were all dried up
before he left, you gave him a map so that he hopefully wouldn’t get lost again and gave him a couple boxes of treats for him to have and to share with his coworkers
you closed early so you had to give away at least some of the remaining treats somehow
he wanted you to go to agency with him so he didn’t have to carry everything but you declined saying that you didn’t want to bc you wanted to rest
and for payback for calling you a little kid
you were 19 goddamnit
you already placed everything neatly into two bags so it was easy to carry but this bitch still had the audacity to pout and whine at you
and he calls you the little kid, jeez
you never told him but, you almost gave in
you never told him. but he probably already knows
ranpo san knows all after all; even you knew that by now
the two of you had also exchanged phone numbers and when the two of you showed each other what you each put for a contact name along with the note below, the two of you broke out into grins
you named him “the greatest detective <33″ & put the note “new nii-san <33 & bully </3″ and he named you “cute bakery girl” with the note “best follower, sweets supply & annoying little kid”
when he left, you properly closed the bakery and taped a sign to the door saying that you closed early for personal reasons
when everything was cleaned up, you marched up into your bedroom, plopped on your bed, and took a nap
you deserved it
at the agency not too long after that, ranpo had arrived and when he opened the door, everyone rushed towards him in concern asking if he was okay
he waved them off and walked towards his desk and plopped down in his seat
he placed the two bags in front of him and took out a box of cream puffs and started to snack on them
his coworkers watched him blankly as his scarfed down one after another
after finishing that box, he rummaged through the bags to look through the different kinds of pastries you’ve given him
noticing that there were people still staring at him he paused before sighing in exasperation
he began to whine at his coworkers saying that no one told him it was gonna rain and that they were lucky that he happened to be in front of Sakura’s
“why did no one tell me?! it was pouring and i was soaked! you guys are lucky that (n/n)-chan’s bakery was right there! you would’ve probably lost me! how would the agency even function without me here?!”
no one wanted to be the one to tell him that they had no idea who he was talking about and that they did in fact tell him that it was gonna pour
they can save that, and their questions for another time
Magic as Always
Written by: @alliswell21
Prompt 71: Magic of Ordinary Days AU: 1940s, Katniss is a single pregnant girl. Desperate for her daughter not to have a child out of wedlock, Mrs Everdeen contacts a priest who in turn knows a young man who just may be willing to help. Sweet, kind and shy Peeta stayed home to take care of the family farm when his beloved brother went to war to never come back. He’s always wanted a family but rural small town life gives little chance to court. He hears of Katniss’ plight and graciously offers to marry her and raise the child as his own. He does everything he can think of to make a home for Katniss and the baby. How does Katniss take it? How does their relationship develop? Will they fall in love? [submitted by anonymous]
Rating: this chapter is rated Teens and Up
Notes: Thank you Anon for this prompt. I must confess, I’ve never seen the movie ‘The Magic of Ordinary Days’ or read the book the movie is based on. I did a quick skimming on the plot of the movie and then dug up all kinds of reviews on the book, most of my plot points come from a combination of movie and book (which apparently differ only in a few parts), besides what the prompter asked for. I just really loved this prompt, and see the potential of this story, which will be a few chapters long, cross posted to AO3 and I already have a good chunk written ;) The rating will be adjusted too, because there will be explicit Everlark smut in the following chapters. Anon, I hope I don’t disappoint you, this story will be only loosely based on the source material, and adapted to fit THG characters in the narrative, I will try to stick to the main plot points as much as I can, but I’m also taking several liberties with the story. I hope you still like it though.
Prim died on a Tuesday, after a very long, strenuous battle with poliomyelitis. My sweet little sister’s face looked as fresh as a dew drop even in death.
  “Come now, Katniss,” my mother calls from the open door of the mortuary hall, where visitation took place an hour ago.
  The mortician has arranged for the coffin to be taken to the cemetery and put in the ground this afternoon. There will be no graveside mourning. It’s all we could pay for, but then again the war has left everyone penniless nowadays.
  A big, rotund man comes to close the coffin, and offers a curt nod.
  That’s it then. The very last time I’ll ever set eyes on Primrose’s sweet face.
  “Katniss,” Mother whispers, insistently. It’s probably all she can muster before breaking down in tears.
  I look on at the box my sister’s body lies in, numb and heartsick. I bring my 3 middle fingers to my lips and then rise them in the air. My last salute to my beloved Little Duck. I step away from the coffin and shuffle towards mother.
  Up close, I can see the deep, dark bruises under my mother’s eyes. She used to be beautiful in her youth— according to friends and old photographs— but now she just looks tired and defeated. I guess having to bury first her husband and then her 15 year old daughter, in less than a year, would have that effect on anyone.
  Prim would’ve looked like our mother, with their soft blonde locks, almond shaped blue eyes and alabaster skin. She had a softer spirit though, she enjoyed music and loved animals. She always said that if she was older, she would’ve joined the Red Cross and signed up to serve as a nurse to our boys in the Pacific, like Father did… Father wasn’t a nurse though, he was a chaplain.
  It’s funny to think that I inherited so much of my father, like my dark hair, gray eyes and olive skin. We both also share the same aversion to human pain and blood that moves my mother and Prim to action; but unlike Prim, my father’s calling to help the soldiers in their worst situations, passed me and went directly to my baby sister.
  I sigh… Prim would’ve made a terrific army nurse, if only she hadn’t wasted in bed with that odious disease! If she had been given the chance to live, I’m sure Prim would’ve had so many boys trailing after her. She would marry at some point and have a beautiful full life.
  I don’t plan on marrying and having a family. If the acute pain in my own chest wasn’t enough warning,  watching my mother walk silently from the funeral home to our apartment, with her head bowed and listening to her quiet sobs at night would be enough evidence that there’s too much sorrow in losing one’s husband and children.
  I think my efforts will be better spent in cultivating my mind, and getting my degree in botany, like my father always dreamed, anyway… plus, I’m not much of a looker… not like Prim at any rate.
  We finally arrived at our modest home. Mother drifts ghost-like into the door, and then we both shuffle quietly into our separate bedrooms. There won’t be a meal at the table tonight, but I make sure Prim’s old tomcat gets fed and watered, and after he meows in distress at my sister’s door, I open mine, and let him strut inside my bedroom and hop into my bed. The hideous fur ball and I distrust each other, but he understands his mistress is never coming back, and he’s the last thing I have from her… so he lets me pet him and he cuddles close to my chest as I fall asleep, crying.
——————————-
Mother and I walk slowly through the busy streets of town, mostly ignoring the bustle and disarray around us. People shout, cars honk horns, a baby cries in the distance, and the few young men rush back and forth in the busy sidewalks, like they’re being lashed by invisible whips.
  “We should stop by the grocer and see if we can pick up some eggs.” Says my mother, pulling her “Sugar Book” out of her handbag.
  Because of the war, everything is being rationed, from sugar to shoes.
  I could care less about food and clothing, though. But I still go into the shop, dutifully.
  I’m so immersed in my own thoughts, I don’t see the lanky man walking towards me with his arms full of vittles.
  We collide. The man’s groceries fly up in every direction, raining over me, as I sit on my rump on the floor.
  My mother is nowhere to be seen. Typical.
  “I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there!” Says the man, pulling a packet of oatmeal from the floor, while extending his other hand to help me up.
  “No… it’s alright, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
  “Well, let’s agree that we’re both klutzes, and leave it at that?” The man offers.
  I’m on my feet, dusting my skirt off and righting my blouse, “Sure, let’s do that.” I scowl at the skew state of my clothes and finally look up at the man.
  He’s smiling down at me, and I must admit, his smile is dazzling. He’s got short brown hair, greenish-brown eyes, and a smattering of freckles over his nose. He also towers above me.
  “My stars! If it isn’t Katniss Everdeen!” The young man says, unexpectedly excited.
  I blink owlishly at him, and try to place his face, but I’m horrible at remembering people. Or their names.
  “Marvel Quaid,” he offers genially, unfazed by my lack of response, “we went to grade school together?” He prompts, “My pa used to sell luxury goods in District One?”
  “Oh, I think it’s coming back now,” I say smiling for the first time in what feels like months. “You used to throw sticks, pretending they were spears or something,” I tell him, showing that indeed, I do remember him.
  Marvel scrunches his nose, “Javelins, actually. I was pretending I threw javelins. I saw a fellow doing it for the Olympics in a film, and then he won a medal for it. I thought to myself that making a victory lap with the good old American flag flapping after oneself looked like fun; well, I wanted to be a victor too!” He chuckles, then deflates. “But as everything, those dreams are gone now, crushed to dust under the weight of the war.”
  As is the norm, once the war gets brought up, gloominess settles on, dampening the cheeriest of spirits.
  “I’m sorry,” I say. “I’m all too familiar with the sentiment.”
  Marvel nods, grimly.
  “We lost Father in France.” I’m not sure why I said it. “We put my sister in the ground last week, too.” I avert my eyes.
  “Aww, geez, Kit… that’s truly awful. I’m so sorry for your loss,”
  I’m mildly surprised I don’t immediately recoil at his little pet name. I guess the fact that he doesn’t sound condescending while delivering his condolences, helps.
  “Oh, well, as my father would’ve said, at least their toils in this world are over. They can finally rest in peace.”
  After a moment of heavy silence, Marvel shares, “I’m being shipped out tomorrow morning.”
  I scowl, “Oh,” I bite the inside of my cheek, wondering how he’d manage to evade the draft for this long? Marvel is my age, 19 going on 20… boys get sent to the front lines at 18. “I… I could write to you… if you wanted?” I offer shyly.
  Isn’t that what young women are being told to do, in order to keep our boys’ morale from plummeting?
  Marvel grins, showing slightly crooked teeth, “That would be swell, Kit!” He stares at me for a long moment, then sighs, “I should go back to my shopping, before they miss me at home. Lord knows when will I have the chance of doing something as mundane as picking up my mother’s weekly grocery allowance.”
  These days it is not only uncommon seeing men doing grocery runs, but simply seeing young, able-body men around, period. All of our boys are either in Europe or the Pacific, fighting to keep the devastation of the World war from reaching our shores.
  “Well, for what is worth, I hope you get to return home safely… you know, so you can do all the boring tasks your mother tells you to do. And when I say safe, I mean, I hope you don’t run anymore into spaced out girls, like me,” I smirk.
  “Oh, Kit, if only you knew how much I’ve enjoyed our accidental skirmish. It’s like a gift from above, seeing you after all these years. Your smile and the color of your eyes will forever be branded in my mind, to give me a reason to fight. To have a dream,”
  I’m momentarily floored by Marvel’s florid little speech. Nobody has ever said anything nearly as sweet and gallant as that to me, and for a moment, I forget all about my dead sister and father, the war, and my own sorrow.
  I avert my eyes, bashfully, as he finishes picking up his vittles off the floor.
  “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me,” I lean over to pick up a can of milk, and put it on top of his pile.
  “I only speak the truth,” he smiles brightly.
  My mother chooses to interrupt at the exact moment I bat my lashes at him, “Katniss, there you are! I’ve been waiting for you by the counter.” She shakes her head.
  Marvel wobbles on his feet, rearranging his load, and then greets my mother, warmly, “Mrs. Everdeen, how nice to see you again,”
  My mother eyes him, unimpressed. “Good afternoon, young man,” she answers.
  “Ma’am… pardon my forwardness, but, would it be too troublesome to ask Miss Katniss to accompany a soldier about to be shipped out, to supper in the town?”
  My mother narrows her eyes, distrust dripping from her voice as she speaks, “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. My daughter and I are in mourning, you see,”
  “Oh, this won’t be an untoward celebration of any kind, ma’am. With the war raging on, we’re all in mourning. All I ask for is one last night of normalcy, a chance to reconnect with an old grade-school mate,” he smiles, hopefully, “For old times sake?”
  I’m watching my mother’s face closely, with bated breath.
  “Very well,” Mother sighs, “You may ask Katniss out to dinner. But have her home by 9 sharp!”
  I don’t hesitate to step up and give him directions to my apartment building in District 12.
  I spend the rest of my day giddy and nervous, pressing my best Sunday suit, the gray one with the matching jacket, and polishing my only pair of leather shoes. There isn’t much I can do about my hair… the thing can’t be fashioned into the favored waves, not even putting it in curlers overnight, so I let it be.
  I briefly wonder if this was all Prim’s doing? Meeting Marvel and mother’s somewhat easy aquiciscent. Prim hated seeing me sad, and constantly talked about how she’d love to help me get ready for dates with a beau. She couldn’t wait to be of courting age and date a strapping, young man herself… but of course, that would never happen for her, but she would probably still want to see me have those things.
  Maybe Marvel is right, and our serendipitous encounter is a gift from above, to heal our wounds… at least for the night.
  ————————-
  Marvel arrives at my house in his father’s car at 5:45. Riding is now such a luxury, with gasoline being rationed and all. He takes me to a quaint little dinner in the middle of town. We share malts, a greasy burger, and a small portion of fries and onion rings.
  We talk about baseball:
  “You’d look good in a baseball uniform, Kit! Can you still run as fast as you did in school?”
  I laugh. “I’m not much for sports,” I demure, “but I’ve heard playing in one of the new teams pays alright. Anyway, I’m gonna be starting my second year of college soon. I put my studies on hold while Prim was at her worst, but now that it’s only just me and mother… I’m anxious to go back to study.”
  “Wow, beautiful and smart!”
  We talk about cars:
  “I loved driving… but Mother sold our car when my sister took a turn for the worse. She didn’t want to at first, saying that Father saved up to buy it, and it held sentimental value to her, but I had to push to sell it. We needed the money and gas was a nightmare to come by, anyway,”
  “The only reason we still have ours,” says Marvel, “is because Pa is too stubborn to let go of the things that still made him feel wealthy.” He scowls, “He’s trying to get into the ice business now, since it’s pretty much the only thing one where the raw material is plenty and relatively cheap, and there’s guarantee that people will buy the product… everyone still needs ice for their ice boxes, right?”
  No one can afford luxuries anymore with every penny going out to support our boys in the battlefields.
  We talk about many other subjects: his sister’s wedding; my father’s unit getting pinned and killed by Germans… We didn’t get a body to bury, but I got a medal on his behalf as his eldest child.
  Marvel lets me sniffle against his chest, and then kisses my lips slowly.
  I’ve never been kissed on the lips, and I feel my face heat up.
  “Would you… like to take a drive with me, Kit?”
  We drive all the way to the city limit. It’s exhilarating to be in a car again, and sitting at the overlook, at twilight,  alone with a handsome boy, feels positively forbidden!
  I’ve never done anything remotely injudicious all my life, and this whole moment feels… magical… exciting!
  Tentatively, I initiated our next kiss, but he takes over in a rush of caresses and flitting touches.
  “Beautiful, graceful, Kit. You have no match!”
  “Marvel…” I kiss him again, not knowing how to answer his sentiments with words.
  His hands are restless, groping my shoulders and elbows. “I wished he had more time! I would’ve loved to marry you before departing. I would’ve show you so much passion and love!”
  “You still can show me, Marvel… you absolutely can!”
  It’s all the permission he needs to dive into a frenzy. He doesn’t stop until the deed is done, and we’re a sweaty, tangled mess of limbs in the back seat of the car, only partially clothed.
  A deep feeling of lethargy pours over me. My muscles are sore and heavy, and wished I could fall asleep in here.
  “I intend on coming back to marry you, Katniss,” Marvel says, stretching his lanky, long legs to zip up his pants.
  I sit up and start finger-combing my ruined hair, hoping my mother won’t notice the strands are extra frizzy. “Um… I guess we should after this,” I say shyly, gesturing between us.
  “You could still go to college while I’m away,” he offers with magnanimity.
  “You… wouldn’t mind that?” I ask incredulous, college women are so rare, unless they’re trying to become nurses or teachers. Most girls start courting right after high school and get married in the span of one to two years, and their husbands don’t normally encourage an education beyond what their wives came into the marriage with; so to hear Marvel say that wouldn’t mi d me stay in college is just about the greatest thing possible!
  “My darling, Kit, I don’t want you to be one of those girls pining and wasting away for her beau. I’ll be busy at war, it’ll be unfair to keep you from occupying your own time while you wait fir my return. Go to college, my clever girl!”
  I smile indulgently at him, leaning closer to slip his necktie around the collar of his shirt, “You are truly a generous, loving man,” I say.
  Marvel beams, circling my waist with his arms pulling me against his body. “It’s all inspired by you, sugar plum!”
  I giggle, kissing his cheek, “I’ll write to you every day!” I promise.
  “That’s nice… but just so you know, I might not be able to write back right away. It’ll be a while before I get settled enough to write. But you’ll be in my thoughts every minute of every day, and that’s the honest truth! I’m serious about marrying you when I return, Kit,” he kisses me again. And then, he looks at his watch, sighing. “It’s 8:32. We should get on going, gotta keep in my future mother-in-law’s good graces!”
  We share a carefree laugh, and finish tidying ourselves up to drive back to my house.
  He walks me to the door, takes me in his arms, and kisses me passionately before promising he’d be back to officially ask for my hand in marriage, and for my part, I swear I’ll write to him every day until he returns home safe and sound.
  But neither of us keeps our promises in the end, although I tried.
  ————————-
  Three weeks go by and I keep my word of writing daily letters. I receive no word in return from Marvel, but think nothing of it… Europe is far and traveling by sea is tedious and time consuming; Marvel will get in touch once he’s settled down.
  Another week goes by, still without news from my would-be fiancé. I still don’t worry. I’ve been busy with university, and the few other girls attending school with me keep me busy, but my heavier workload is starting to get to me.
  I’m usually so tired and moody after school that socializing with my classmates becomes a chore. I barely eat supper before I’m passing out in bed, and my letters to Marvel start to get shorter and simpler with every passing day.
  I skip writing one afternoon altogether, and take a long nap. Buttercup— Prim’s ugly cat— perches on my bed like a sentinel to watch me sleep. I believe he’s worried about me… stupid, clingy cat thinks I’m sick.
  But the feline’s intuition proves right, because just two days later, I shoot out of bed and run into the washroom to spill every last ounce of last night supper into the toilet. I must’ve caught a bug or something!
  I feel queasy and lightheaded every morning after. My appetite wanes and it seems my delicate stomach can only tolerate pears, and broth.
  I visit the post office to place out my letters to Marvel almost everyday; Every time I come, the nice old mailman comments on how sweet it is to see all the young-uns holding romance strong. Marvel has yet to respond to one of my letters, so I just smile tightly and demure.
  I’ve been thinking though; the longer I go without news of my supposed future husband, and despite the whirlwind night of romance with him, I start questioning my actions, my promises. I never wanted to marry before, and suddenly I was okay getting a hasty, unofficial engagement with a virtual stranger, I barely remember from grade school… maybe it’s better if Marvel never writes.
  My plans on earning a college degree and finding a well paying job will go unencumbered— I’m aware women in prominent working professions are as rare as snow in July, but women’s presence in the working forces keep growing as industries need laborers to keep up producing while the men fight in the war. Educated women are almost becoming less rare.
  At the two month mark since I last saw Marvel, I become weepier than usual… is to be expected in my opinion; Prim’s been gone for a little over two months and she was the only person I knew I loved. But now I’m worrying about my health on top of everything.
  One morning, while I’m kneeling on the cold, hard floor in front of the toilet, feeling miserable and tired, my mother calls my name from the open door.
  “Katniss, I think it’s time to get a test.” She states evenly, and then enters the room to fetch a damp washcloth to wipe my face clean. “I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid you may be with child,” she sighs.
  I squirm. “No,” I gasp. “I— I can’t be with child. I just can’t!” But the thought has crossed my mind a few times already. “It’s not supposed to be this way!”
  “I know, child,” My mother pats my head, “there’s only one way to know. Get dressed for the day, I will call the most discreet physician I know, and have him pay us a visit.”
  ————————-
  Doctor Aurelius— a physician my mother has helped deliver babies and treat maladies with— confirms the pregnancy with a grim face.
  I sit at my kitchen table numb and despondent. My mother writes a check to the doctor for his services, while talking in no so hush tones in the other room. I listen to their whole conversation, as if submerged in water.
  “I blame myself for this, doctor. I should have kept a closer eye on her,”
  “Don’t blame yourself Ms. Everdeen, it’s that war business bringing out all sorts of evil into the world! It’s unfortunate the rise of these cases in our community. Young ladies— from good families!— engaging in acts ought to be saved for marriage. Youth do things without thinking, guided by fear. Our boys fear they may not return from that senseless, awful war, and settle down properly, and I don’t blame them one little bit.”
  “The only solace I have right now, is that my poor husband is not here to see the shame that’s fallen over our family,”
  “I understand the sentiment, ma’am. There’s no telling how Preacher Everdeen would’ve taken this blow. But I’m sure things will work out as soon as young Katniss hears from the father…”
  I dissolve into silent tears then. My mother escorts the doctor to the door and then there’s silence.
  My pinky finger curls into the soft fabric of the table cloth, and I try to ignore the urge to vomit boiling in my stomach. There’s one thought circling mi mind: my college days are over.
  ——————————-
“Ah! Miss Everdeen, I have something for you.” Says the mailman as soon as I reach the desk. He smiles, but rather sadly, like he’s about to give me bad news.
  I’ve come to the post office with urgent letters every day for 6 days, and he’s never looked at me this way.
  The old man digs around for a moment and almost reluctantly, passes a parcel tied up in twine. An envelope is attached to the top of the parcel, and with a sinking feeling, I realized it’s a stack of my own letters.
  “It came in today, miss.” Says the man, voice laced with pity. “Sorry for your loss.” He says.
  At first I don’t understand what he could possibly mean by that; he’s offered his sympathies fir my dead father and sister already; it makes absolutely no sense to repeat himself randomly after so long.
  Then it hits me like a ton of bricks.
  I gasp, and press the parcel to my chest. “Oh no! Marvel!” I whisper. I give the man a hasty wave, thanking him, and rush out of the post office like mad.
  Tears run down my cheeks, while I dash home, imagining the worst. “Poor, Marvel!” Is all I can think.
  “Katniss, what’s wrong?” My mother calls, alarmed, when I rush to my bedroom, sobbing. She follows me in, and watches me tear into the envelope at the top of the stack.
  I frown in confusion when I’m met with handwritten, chicken-scratch scrawl, instead of a formal missive typed in official US military stationary.
  My scowl deepens as my eyes rove over the flowery vocabulary, and then I screech, “What?!”
  “Katniss, what’s going on?”
  I ignore my mother when she approaches to read over my shoulder; I step around her, shaking the piece of paper in my hands and stand by the window, as if sunlight will make the words change their meaning.
  I smooth the creases and folds on the page over, and read out loud, “Dearest Kit, sorry it took so long to write, it’s been a wild time since we arrived and finding time to correspond with everyone back home it’s been hard.
  “At times, your letters have been the sole source of light and hope in the darkness of this conflict. Is for that reason, and with a heavy heart, that I must come clean to you now. I truly meant it when I swore to come back and make you my wife, but as the Good Book says, the Lord works in mysterious ways, and love has sprouted out the most unlikely place! Kit, I’ve fallen in love and married a lovely gal here in England…”
  I stop reading. He goes on talking about the why and how, but I sincerely don’t care.
  “That good for nothing, virtue dasher, future crushing… liar!” My mother bleats to the ceiling, raising her palms over her head, dramatically.
  I’m angry too, of course. I feel used and disposed of like a dirty rag, but my mother’s reaction is borderline hilarious. Except, it isn’t.
  I’m pregnant, unmarried, and soon— once my still flat stomach starts rounding— I’ll be socially ostracized for my condition. My only saving grace was the promise of marriage that bastard Marvel had given me. But that’s gone now.
  “I knew that boy was bad news the second I laid eyes on him! He never even introduced himself to me, the little weasel! This is my fault. My fault! I should’ve never allowed you to run amok with the likes of him…”
  “Mother, will you please?” I nearly growl, gesturing at the open bedroom door.
  She stares at me uncomprehendingly for a moment, before pursing her lips in disapproval, and stalking out of the room muttering her aggravation under her breath.
  I sink into my bed with Marvel’s stupid letter crumpling in my fist. A single, hot, angry tear rolls down my face, and for the first time since finding out of its existence, I hug my midsection and address my child, “I’m so sorry for dragging you into this mess. I know you didn’t ask for a mother like me, but I’m all you got now, little one. I promise we will be alright… I’ll try not to let you down.”
  ———————-
  My mother has been unbearable for the last two days. She cries in her room worse than when Prim died, and when she sees me, she starts lamenting my poor choice, like I’m not even standing there… as if I don’t feel discouraged enough.
  I keep myself busy with my education. I will need to earn this diploma now more than ever before, and I need to do as much as I can before the baby arrives and my studies get put on hold.
  In the meantime, I scout the newspapers for possible work options to sustain me and my mother. Our savings keep diminishing and the small stipend my mother got from the Army since my father passed away is becoming more insufficient by the day.
  There’s a knock on the front door, and I push out my chair unhappy by the interruption.
  “Afternoon Miss Katniss! Would you let your mother know she’s got a telephone call down in the lobby?” Says the building’s doorkeeper.
  “Of course, thank you. She’ll be right down!”
  Telephones are yet another luxury we had to give up when moved to this small place after losing my father.
  I go back to my job hunt, and my mother descends to the lobby, quickly.
  She returns after only 10 minutes, almost running through the door, excitedly calling my name. Tears wet her face, but her smile is so blinding, even without knowing what sort of news she’s heard to cause her such joy, I stand from the table with nervous anticipation.
  “Oh, Katniss! Katniss my dear daughter, you’re saved!” She exclaims, hugging me tightly.
  I’m confused. I step away from her embrace, “What do you mean?”
  “It’s the best thing possible ever, I tell you! The Lord has answered all of my prayers!”
  “This is all so exciting and all, mother, but… could you please share this great news already?”
  My mother cups my face in her hands, and beams at me, “You need to pack your things, darling! Your father’s good friend, Reverend Undersee, has found a husband, and you are to wed, in three days time!”
  —————————
Reverend Undersee and his daughter, Madge, meet me and my mother at the rinky dink bus station, in the equally tiny town my mother has banished me to.
  “Katniss! How long has it been?” Says Madge, hugging me enthusiastically.
  I bite my tongue to keep the acidic retort of “not long enough!” to leave my mouth.
  “Welcome to Panem,” says the reverend, soberly, shaking my mother’s hand in greeting.
  “Thank you, revered. We appreciate your hospitality and your understanding,” my mother responds, then gives me a pointed look and a wordless command.
  I nod and mutter, “Thank you, sir. Madge,”
  I scowl at a crack in the pavement, not feeling an iota of gratefulness for this charade!
  Any man agreeing to this questionable union has to either be desperate, or be hiding terrible, ulterior motives to go along with all of this. Nobody in their right mind would willingly marry a girl pregnant with another man’s baby, and be happy about it… unless that’s the reason!
  I shudder at the thought.
  But it is a very real possibility that my intended is a simpleton, who can’t find a wife otherwise… or worse! It could be a man very advanced in age, looking for a supple, young body to leech off. Gross!
  My mother had been too excited about the news that a man offered to marry me (as if I asked for, or even wanted a husband!) to bother to ask his name.
  Reverend Undersee coughs daintily, clears his throat, and starts, like he’s giving a lecture at the university. “It is our Christian duty to lend a helping hand to widows and orphans in their time of needs. Same way it’s our duty to keep the memory and honor of an old friend from being dragged into the mud.”
  I wince at the harsh words, and let my face fall lower, if that’s even possible.
  “Well, it’s a good thing that we are all recipients of the abundant grace of the Lord, which covers multitude of faults, and it’s never hard to reach,” a deep, velvety, masculine voice cuts into my embarrassment.
  I lift my eyes from the ground, to find a man striding confidently in our direction. He smiles kindly at me, his eyes fixed on my own, like I’m the only person still standing in the station.
  He finally cedes our staring contest, to take in the rest of the group.
  A knot forms in the pit of my stomach, because I recognize him from years past when my family used to visit this town, and I’m afraid I know exactly why he’s here.
  “Good afternoon, all. I apologize for my tardiness, I had a last second detail to take care of before leaving the house,” he nods in our general direction, taking his hat off; a riot of ashy blonde curls falls onto his forehead, before bending forward to shake my mother’s hand, “I’m Peeta Mellark, at your service, ma’am. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
  “Likewise, mister Mellark,” says my mother, her lips twitch tersely, “Widow Everdeen, and this here is my daughter Katniss… your bride.”
  Peeta Mellark’s baby blue eyes slip back to mine, and the left side corner of lips curls into a shy, earnest smile. “Welcome to Panem, Katniss, I’ll sure do my best, so you’d like it here.”
Survey Results
A few days ago I made a survey to find the most viewed and most popular mcc teams and several people said they’d be interested in seeing the results, so here they are.
Firstly, a few notes:
-This is in no way scientific, I don’t know anything about data collection or presentation so take everything with a grain of salt.
-The survey was only posted to tumblr and reddit, which will obviously skew the results. In total there were 498 responses.
-A couple hours or so after I posted it I rephrased the questions on the survey because some people were putting CCs instead of teams.
-There was a lot of “I might be biased, but…” and I want to re-iterate that this was about favourite teams, not the objective best ever team so everyone has a bias.
Part One: Most Viewed:
The most viewed MCC teams (either watched live or as vods) are the following:
Tumblr media
Part Three: Runners Up:
For fun there was also a section for teams that people liked but weren’t favourites. The results were as follows:
Tumblr media
-90% of the time people who chose orange 17 as their favourite put blue 9 in the runners up and vice versa. Same with red all stars and pink 11. -The most common reasons for a team being put in this section were some variant of “it was the first mcc I saw live”, “they did terribly but it was very funny” and “it would’ve been my favourite if they won” -The simmers were mentioned 8 times as a group (but for different mccs) which puts them just ahead of cyan 11.
Part 4: Miscellaneous (or: people's comments that interested me)
-Of the five people who put red 14 down as their favourite, four said it was because of Tommy’s leadership.
-Teams from MCC 10 and 14 were considered the most underrated, with a couple people saying they thought the controversy after 14 overshadowed what was on the whole a very fun event.
-“Literally sapnap” and “any pov with dream” were answers in the underrated section which confuses me beyond belief. I’m not sure if this is an in joke I’m missing or if those people misread the question or what.
-People who put aqua 9 all said it was because techno sounded less stressed and like he was having fun that event.
-The simmers were mentioned 10 times in the underrated section, with one person saying that while they personally didn't watch them they were glad they were in the event. Two people mentioned the battle box strat and one person said that people severely underrated their skills in minecraft. idk what else to add to this i just thought it was nice.
-Red AS fans have very different opinions on the battle box. I'd say its a 70 - 30 split between "funny as hell" and "the most painful thing i ever saw"
-Jingle Jam teams did surprisingly better than i expected, although i (and a lot of people) still consider them to be hugely underrated.
-There was a lot of "[team] introduced me to this cc" which i thought was neat.
-People who talked pink17 usually talked about how good the teamwork was and how cool it was that two sides of the mcc sphere had met
-People who talked about lime 18 usually talked about fundy getting drunk
-I've got a new appreciation for mcc 12 after reading several people's enthusiasm for orange ocelots
Closing Thoughts on Vincenzo
No one asked, but here you go.
I watched the last two episodes of Vincenzo yesterday, but even in the midst of my viewing experience I was able to synthesis and analyze what I was enjoying and not-enjoying, what worked and what didn’t work (for me), so that itself says something about how immersive it was. Of course, Vincenzo is a great show — the action is sharp and satisfying, the schemes are elaborate and spectacular, the humor is cracky yet genuine, and the characters are so, so lovable. And I loved the romance side plot, because yes, I am weak. Still, the last 2-4 episodes strained some of that, and this is my take on why I felt not exactly disappointed, but underwhelmed in the final stretch. I’m also including what I did like at the very end, as that makes sense with how I’m structuring this kind-of-analysis.
spoilers below
Tension, Stakes, and Pay-off
The tension in Vincenzo has been ramped up ever since the death of Vincenzo’s mother, loudly and painfully declaring in that moment that “this is not a game” (contrary to Vincenzo telling Hanseok in jail that he’s toying with him). This leads to a chilling confrontation between Vincenzo and the antagonists while also uniting the residents of Geumga in all-out, unapologetic war. And there is no more game of chess — just one of cat and mouse, with Vincenzo descending upon his prey.
Hence, Vincenzo is noticeably less soft, and he strikes Babel with the steel of his resolve. His schemes feel much more sinister than mischievous as they had been before; he is ending this, once and for all. So, how does the show amp up the tension and stakes from there?
Well, it’s all in what I said before. The tension is teased out in Vincenzo stealing everything Hanseok has ever treasured and then taunting/threatening him in prison, and then with the Babel villains descending into chaos and desperation. The stakes, however, are less noticeable, because Vincenzo is kind of obviously winning. The stakes have already been established with Vincenzo’s mother, then paid off with her death, and then paid off even more with Vincenzo mercilessly seizing the upper hand.
That’s why I feel like Myunghee and Hanseo’s death just... happened. Because it’s been 3 whole episodes since Vincenzo has founded this new resolve, that sort of dragged out follow-up loses its thrill and gratification. They’ve been defeated now, completely and totally. But so what? They’ve been on the losing end for more than 3 hours of screen time now, and even their last resort of a counterattack didn’t hold much narrative weight (which is something I’ll get to later). Their deaths are not boring to say the least — I saw a post that said something similar to “Myunghee, a woman who danced to the music of others’ pain, died dancing to her own” and “Hanseo, a man with no heart, has a hole drilled into that empty cavity.”
But their deaths also happen very isolated from everyone else, not just physically, but emotionally as well. It’s almost as if Vincenzo’s clapping his hands and saying, “Let’s wrap this up now, I’m getting a little tired.” And while I wouldn’t say their deaths are unnecessarily cruel, given everything they’ve done, I don’t think Vincenzo does this in response to anything particularly substantial. Is this for his mother’s death? For Chayoung’s injury? For everyone else? Well, maybe, but it sure didn’t feel like he was contemplating that during or after torturing them. If I put the Vincenzo from the beginning of the show there in those two scenes vs Vincenzo from the end of the show, post character development and all, I think the only difference would be that beginning-of-the-show Vincenzo would still be unfamiliar with Babel’s crimes and see this as a waste of time.
A sort of side note: Now, one of the strong points of this show is its use of comedy in its otherwise very serious schemes (I still thinking about episodes 8 and 15 all the time). But with the impending climax and increasingly serious tone, there was no comedy to make said-serious schemes as engaging to watch. So now unable to rely on one of its greatest strengths, the show must rely on emotional impact. Or similarly: narrative weight.
Narrative Weight
In episodes 19-20, Chayoung is shot, Hanseo dies, and Chulwook is stabbed (and you think he’s going to die but he doesn’t). Who said there was no emotional impact in these episodes again?!
Oh right. Me.
Beyond Hong Yuchan and Oh Gyeongja’s death, injuries and fatalities suffered from our protagonists’ side don’t really have that many consequences. You can argue the consequences of Hanseo dying is that we’re all very sad, but both we and the characters are barely given a moment to grieve before we have to move on. What does Hanseo die for? He dies as an abuse victim just beginning to break out of the cycle he was trapped in, and that itself isn’t necessary a bad narrative choice, and he dies as a warrior in this Mafia vs Conglomerate war, but what does he die for? If it’s for Vincenzo and Chayoung to live, they pretty much get lucky with Hanseo running out of bullets. If it is to show that he had changed, and that this tied into some greater theme of redemption, then his death really isn’t really given enough thought for it to resonate well. I would’ve loved to see Vincenzo reflecting on Hanseo learning to trust and love again, despite all the mistakes he made in the past, and how that influences his own decision to embrace his version of villainous justice. But no. This is something I only thought of after reading a few Vincenzo posts and trying to justify my own moral for the show.
Don’t forget that Chulwook almost dies too. Like I genuinely believed he was dead, shed a tear for the daughter he would never meet, and then the show went like, “Guess what? Psyche!”
I’m not very fond of that injury/pseud-death-but-not-really.
And now we have Chayoung, the person who Vincenzo is the closest to. Don’t get me wrong, I amso weak for her never giving into Hanseo and asking for death over Vinceno getting hurt, for guarding Vincenzo from the bullet, for Vincenzo’s shocked and empty eyes, for Chayoung’s glazed gaze, for him desperately and powerlessly hugging her tightly because that’s all he can do for her now. Afterwards, she’s in the hospital, her shoulder is recuperating, and there’s a nice Chayenzo parallel to episode 4 when Chayoung was waiting by Vinny’s hospital bed. But afterwards afterwards? She’s just in the hospital. Sidelined from the climax.
Vincenzo told her, “I will finish this, for you.” That could’ve worked, because we could’ve seen Chayoung emotionally or spiritually with us during the climax and Myunghee and Hanseo’s deaths. But like I mentioned earlier, it really didn’t feel that way. Ultimately, the narrative tells us that Chayoung’s injury just means she can’t strain herself for a couple of days, despite initially delivering it so dramatically and emotionally.
As one of my friends said while we were discussing this episode: Vincenzo is the titular character, but Chayoung has so much to care for too. Her father died because of Babel, and she said, “We should share the danger.” Instead, we got a decentish-but-slightly-underwhelming scene where she is driven to see Vincenzo off. Okay then.
Characters
Speaking of, Chayoung receives much of the short-end of the character development stick in the last 4 episodes. I found this to be acceptable in episodes 17-18, and she does have that moment where she looked uncertain and nauseated at the death of the “hunting dogs” before shoving down her misgivings, clinging onto a facade of strength as she says “this is what I wanted.” Also, even though it wasn’t episode 14, I wasn’t complaining about the Chayenzo moments either.
But still, this is the second most important protagonist in the narrative and nothing about her really changes in these last few episodes. Nor does she experience catharsis alongside Vincenzo, emotionally or otherwise. There had been some buildup about whether or not Chayoung can swallow the cruel path that she has chosen, but if she’s not even the given the chance to make her own decision on said cruel path, that’s just wasted set up.
(I know that during the Babel Tower party-fiasco Vincenzo told Chayoung that he originally wanted her to push the button that’ll kill one of the hunting dogs, but then decided against it upon seeing Chayoung’s wavering face, but like. Narratively, if she was the one to press it, and then we had some follow-up character arc about her coming to terms with her decision... Oh, we could’ve had it all.)
Another thing I want to point out is that Chayoung has been a foil to Vincenzo in that she represents the happiness, love, and innocence now unattainable to him. (This is just his view, by the way, since Chayoung isn’t exactly innocent herself, which he could’ve seen if the show had only taken this direction.) That is to say, Vinceno’s most interesting character moments are drawn out of him by Chayoung: In his apartment, when they are under the ceiling-stars, and she asks him whether he has ever killed anyone. On the rooftop, when they decide that Hanseok must lose everything before he dies, and he promises to her that he’ll stay in Korea to see things through to the end, in direct contrast to himself at the beginning of the show. In the highway pass, when she embraces him after a gunfight, the closest he’s ever grazed past death. When they drink makgeolli together and he tells her about what her father wanted to say to her. When they sit together by the riverside and she tells him that his mother would have been proud of him.
One of my favorite parts of episodes 11-12 during the gun fight is just how emotionally present Chayoung is, despite not wielding a gun herself, or even being anywhere near the action. I’m not sure if I’m getting this right, but I think this is the first time Vincenzo had killed people on screen, so to see Chayoung embrace him so tearfully afterwards almost felt like he was being reminded of his humanity. And this also shows that Chayoung, despite saying that she would feel distant towards Vincenzo if he did have blood on his hands, loves him closely, so closely it hurts.
We think about Vincenzo, what it means to be a consigliere, and his distorted flashbacks of flesh and blood and killing and losing himself, and that teddy bear, slowly panning out to a child, staring at him in fear. We think about how is it possible for him to love again? Can he even know what love is?
Then Chayoung appears, a woman whose very presence unraveled the mystery that is Vincenzo. But the moment that Chayoung’s development was stunted, that was the moment Vincenzo lost his foil, and we, the audience, lost the ability to see how his past, present, and future reconcile.
Themes: Loving in Sin
In episode 20, Vincenzo and the monks have a conversation about whether he was worthy of love or not before being told that he was Vaisravana — and though he could never be accepted by Buddha, he would be appreciated at times, and he would have his own role to play too. I like this conversation a lot in concept. In execution, it would’ve left much weightier an impact if only we had seen Vincenzo’s journey to reconcile his villainy and humanity play out more, if we had a glimpse into the moral conflict warring in his mind. The last time the drama showed that to us — not told it to us — was with the death of Vincenzo’s mother.
I would add more, really, but I feel like my review up until here says everything I want it to. In my opinion, there was no real epiphany that Vincenzo reached upon hearing those words from the monk because he hadn’t reflected on it enough for there to properly be one. And the ending to Vincenzo and Chayoung’s romance would’ve felt a lot better if it was Vincenzo choosing to love her despite his fear of himself, despite his belief that he could only hurt people. (Also that ending monologue wouldn’t have felt so tacked-on, like, oh wait this is supposed to have a theme right? Here, this is vaguely related, right?)
Because a lot of this emotional potential was not quite met, I think the finale also had to resort to some cheaper ways to make us feel for the romance, such as Chayoung rushing to see Vincenzo off and Vincenzo leaving the diplomacy-relations party early (he very poetically disappears while walking behind this sculpture, but I thought it was hilarious that if the shot didn’t get cut off there in another 2 seconds we could’ve seen him walking out of where that sculpture thing blocked him lol).
Overall though, I’m pretty happy with the romance’s ending, at least conceptually. The way they incorporated the story of cow herder and weaver girl and the bridge of pigeons (not magpies!) that will allow them to see each other again every year was so bittersweet, and as someone familiar with this myth, it made me very nostalgic. Also, I do think it works better with Vincenzo’s themes that he would be apart from Chayoung in some way. They each have their own lives to lead, but although they met by coincidence, they’ll remain by each other’s sides by intention. He is a villain, and so is she, but villains love tenaciously.
Thoughts I had while watching Dorian Gray (2009)
1. Honestly, i really dont care when characters dont fully match their book descriptions, espically when they're supposed to be the 'most attractive person' and have blonde hair and blue eyes
2. I love Dorian's bright, naive, nature and I think Ben plays it incredibly well
3. Dorian is Bi
4. They really rushed the scene where Sybil's brother tells him she drowned and then tries to strangle him, it wasn't suspenseful enough
5. It would've been really cool if there was a storm when Dorian kills Basil and when they pan to the painting a drop of water rolls down his cheek to really emphasize that who we're seeing isn't 'truly' Dorian
6. I kind of like the fact that Dorian is quite boring, I feel like it shows that as he becomes more corrupted, he just becomes a copy of Harry and nothing like himself, like he has no soul
7. Adding on to that thought, I feel like in the scenes with Basil, even right before he kills him, Dorian seems a little brighter
8. Sybil saying that Dorian isn't as good of a liar as Harry was incredible foreshadowing to the scene in the graveyard as Dorian is walking away from Harry because it's clear that he knows Dorian had something to do with Basil's death
9. Which also reinforces #5 and the fact that Dorian can never truly be himself, only a copy of Harry
10. The scene where Dorian walks back in to the ballroom with everyone aged up is incredible and one of the creepiest scenes in the whole movie
11. I love the scene where he goes to visit Sybil's grave, it's such a wonderful way to show that while he sold his soul to the devil, there's still something left of 'the real' him
12. I don't think him and Sybil would've stayed married, or it would've been something along the lines of a lavender marriage, but they would've been lifelong friends
13. Emily is one of my favorite characters
14. I feel like if Dorian hadn't stuck around Harry and grown closer to Basil and Sybil he'd be alot more like Emily, kind, bright, intelligent, and strongwilled
15. He would also chug respect women juice
16. I keep forgetting that people in London drive on the opposite side of the road
17. Also I kinda like the fact that the straightest motherfucker (Harry) in the entire movie is basically the devil and Basil, the angel like figure, is gay
18. Sybil gives off cottagecore lesbian vibes
19. I feel like the fact that he's becoming more regretful of his actions the more time he spends with emily really shows that by giving his soul away, he has essentially become a blank canvas that takes on the personality of whomever he's around
20. Ben Barnes is a great actor and I will be watching Narnia: Prince Caspian when I get home from work tomorrow
21. The way he looks after Sybil's brother dies and how his posture by the fire looks similar scared child reminds me of my therapist telling me that when we have unresolved trauma, a part of us stays the age we were when we expierenced the trauma
22. Harry is a hypocrite, and honestly the way he talks about keeping Emily away from him reminds me of those dudes who only care about victims of SA because they have a daughter
23. On that note I do understand why he wants him away from her, but, like shut the fuck up my dude
24. 'I am what you made me' Dorian was painted by Basil but he was Harry's blank canvas to create whatever he couldn't be
25. I hate the fucking spotlight effect that they put on anyone who looks at the painting
26. Him immediately accepting that he needs to die once he sees Emily again, juxtaposed with him almost killing Harry for learning the truth really broke my heart
27. Harry doesn't deserve Emily
28. He didn't destroy the portrait for her he destroyed it out of jealousy that Dorian could repent and give himself a new life one where he was happy and could maybe recover from what his grandfather put him through
29. I loved this movie, The Picture of Dorian Gray has been one of my favorite stories for years and I feel like this did a pretty good job
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR WORD OF HONOR EPISODE 35
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The thing about episode 35 of Word of Honor is that, objectively as a scene - it's cinematography and acting and emotional control - it's so well executed, I can't even truly be mad at how it conga line stomped all over my heart it.
Like the way they managed to control the tone of the preceeding scenes so well to lull the watchers into a false sense of security - everything is over and the tone of these episodes are so merry, nothing bad is going to happen probably -
The way the actions were executed when he goes to hold Cao Weining's head, the hope and happiness and trust in Cao Weining's face.
The faint sense of foreboding the watchers get as that embrace lasts for just a little too long, the hands placed just a little too strategically.
When y'know, it happens, the turn Cao Weining does from the momentum of the snap so that he's now face to face with Gu Xiang. He dies looking at her in her wedding clothes. And the framing of them facing each other in that one shot. The slow dawning of realization on Gu Xiang's face.
Then the resulting fury and heartbreak and resentment Gu Xiang experiences - God. Zhou Ye's acting there is so phenomenal. The emotions on her face and in her actions - she really went full out, and there was no attempt to look pretty in death like I see with a lot of cdramas, if anything how twisted her expression is in that moment is everything but pretty, and all the more compelling for it - how she's half crazed by it, and how just visceral and raw it all is, especially when she's screaming that she wants to kill him.
I wanna make a personal note here: the way I got into word of honor was actually because my mom would watch it in the living room and I would occasionally wander in, watch one or two episodes with her (not understanding all the aspects because there would be a LOT of skipped episodes - I think at one point I saw episode 5 and then when I next watched it with her she was on episode 20 something. And also no English subs - my mandarin is serviceable for casual convo but not anything more formal. I watched it with her mostly for her company, not the show itself) and so I didn't know anything about what was happening, and I didn't know any of the characters or have any emotional attachments to them when I saw episode 35. I bawled like a baby anyways, I cried for literally 30 minutes straight for a character I barely knew, because that's how strongly I felt her anguish and her absolute need to do this one last thing before she died, to take revenge for the person who took their happily ever after away and it just. Wow. Absolutely no words. I think the reason I legitimately sat down and binged word of honor is because of her acting - Gong Jun's and Zhang Zhehan's too actually, especially in Wen Kexing's role as an older brother, and Zhou Zishu's protectiveness - how you can feel how much they care for each other, even though it is not the focus of any of those scenes. All of that combined. I have no doubt I would've eventually watched it properly anyways even without seeing episode 35 once I realized how fucking gay it was ,but that scene really cemented it for me - like yeah. This is a well executed show. I need to properly watch it.
(Sidenote: it was not any easier watching that scene a second time after I made my way back up from episode 1 😅😅 if anything it was ten times worse)
And Gu Xiang's final words to Wen Kexing for him to take care of himself, and his response that he's her brother - help. Especially when he cuts the wedding decorations to be their funeral shroud, that scene just really emphasized the tragedy of the entire situation, how two people - kids if we're gonna be honest, like they're of age to get married obviously but they're what, 18?? 19?? - who became a casualty of a conflict that shouldn't have ever been their responsibility to solve, from the greed, pride, hatred and false righteousness of old men. The audacity.
The resulting battle between Wen Kexing and that wrinkly cockhead of a sect leader is, needless to say, pretty amazingly choreographed.
Yeah, this episode was basically just piling angst onto angst onto angst back to back - but it was executed so beautifully?? It was so visceral and real?? I low key hate that I can't even be truly mad at it! I can't!! What the fuck kinda scam -
Anyways, now that my thoughts have been put out there and become the rest of the world's problem as it were, I'm just going to completely ignore the fact that episode 35 exists. 10/10, phenomenal acting and directing and writing. It was beautiful. Would not cry over again.
They are happy and married and alive, the end.
Temporary
Summary:
Everyone's always left Jaskier, he's come to expect it. After all, he was temporary, forgettable. Until Geralt comes back. Until Geralt seems bent on proving him wrong.
-----------------------------------
Julian and his parents were never that close.
They weren’t really invested in him if he was being honest.
Well, maybe they were. They were invested in his academic grades and his ‘upbringing’, which for them consisted of learning how to hunt pheasants and which fork to use.
Other than that, Julian was pretty much left alone with no one but his nanny to keep him company. He liked her. She’d sing for him and tuck him in at night with a kiss.
When he was 7 he figured out that she was being paid to care for him so he closed himself off even to her, hiding behind his blinding smiles.
His father wasn’t gentle with him and Julian tended to get in trouble. How else would an ignored child get any sort of attention? Turns out that the Earl of Lettenhove was more invested in the dignity of the Lettenhove name than he was in ignoring his son. So Julian got what he wanted…in a way. It’s sickeningly clichéd, isn’t it?
Eventually his parents didn’t know what to do with him so they sent him off to boarding school.
Julian learned how to be charismatic, how to become popular among his peers and earn ‘friends’. All fleeting relationships, never lasting long, never slipping past his mask of smiles. Unfortunately, that did not stop him from getting into trouble, nor did it keep him interested in his studies.
He remembered one particular professor. He was a wizard with a cane. He knew exactly where to strike to make it the most painful. “No tears.” He used to say and Julian was forced to swallow them down. After a while he learned how to be an academic.
His love for poetry came as a surprise. He’d only started liking it when he was 19. It was also when he’d met the Countess de Stael. Once she’d stepped into his life, poetry had poured out of him. He’d forgo sleep in favour of letting the words slip onto the pages before him. She loved it at the time.
And then she left.
And so Julian had carried on with his studies, allowing his broken heart to write the most beautiful sonnets and ballads.
And then Julian had left. And he’d changed his name. He changed it to Jaskier. Buttercup. Beautiful, bright and yellow. Small, delicate and smooth to the touch.
Buttercup. A weed.
Loosen the soil, yank at its base and pull it out. More room for better things now.
He’d fallen into many beds during his travels. Men, women, neither. Sometimes it was the Countess de Stael herself. He remembered most of their names. And when he didn’t, it was because he’d been blackout drunk. And even then, he’d remember things like the touch of their skin or the colour of their hair.
None lasted long. Many didn’t care to learn his name. He wasn’t hurt. He hadn’t expected anything more.
He wrote beautiful songs. People didn’t care to listen. So he wrote what was popular. He wrote of monsters and heroes and kings. He knew nothing of monsters and heroes and kings. His songs were bad. He wasn’t paid much.
Then he’d met Geralt of Rivia. Witcher. Monster Hunter. Emotionally constipated. Self loathing. Kind. Generous. Asshole. Utter and absolute asshole.
The love of Jaskier’s life.
Geralt had never shown Jaskier much outward affection. Jaskier had hoped that he cared though. He’d hoped that he wasn’t dispensable, forgettable. The Witcher, for all of his grumpiness, had provided food, had let the bard sleep in occasionally, had let him talk for hours on end, had made sure he was always safe and healthy. He had once even nursed Jaskier back to health after a particularly malicious cold that had left him numb and with a raging fever. Jaskier could even make out the faint whisper of worry in the Witcher’s golden eyes.
Geralt had also inspired him to write in a way he hadn’t known possible. Suddenly, the lyrics and notes were pouring out of him again. His pockets filled with coin. His stomach filled with food. His fame spread. His music was respected. People’s desire for him had grown. He was wanted. But never in the way that he needed.
People ignored him when he was with Geralt, their gaze slipping over him like water. He understood. It was hard to focus on a simple bard when a Witcher stood right beside him. And not just any Witcher. Geralt of Rivia. The White Wolf. A mass of muscles and sharp swords and white hair and amber eyes and gods, did Jaskier understand. He often found himself struggling to look away. And besides, he was used to not being seen, at least not being seen truly and wholly.
Then came the golden dragon and the witch and the mountain and -
“If life could give me one blessing, it would be to take you off my hands.”
It seemed to be a common wish for anyone who’d met him.
Some of his relationships lasted a night, maybe a week, a month, maybe a little more.
With Geralt it had been 20 years. He’d cleaned his wounds, he’d bathed him, he’d learned to understand his grunts and the minute twists of his lips, he’d loved him with all that he had. 20 years. He still wasn’t enough. Jaskier wished he could blame the Witcher. But he’d seen him be kind, he’d seen him be gentle, he’d seen him be careful with his words. Perhaps Jaskier simply wasn’t enough. Maybe he wasn’t enough to warrant care.
Dispensable, forgettable, temporary. Fun while it lasted but not enough to love.
While Jaskier was an idealist, he’d always considered himself to be realistic about his own assets. He was attractive, he had great eyes and a great smile, he was a good dancer, he could write a hell of a song.
There was not much else.
He was annoying, too excitable, too greedy, he was interesting up to a point. He talked too much. He was too cocky. He was useless in a fight. He had a tendency to fool around with married people. He was unlovable.
Ah, yes, and he was dramatic. Overly dramatic.
Jaskier looked at himself in the mirror and smiled, big and bright.
Buttercup.
Weed.
Temporary.
“If life could give me one blessing -”
The smile didn’t waver.
Geralt had found him half a year later performing at a rather respectable inn. He had been singing one of his new songs. It wasn’t about Geralt. None of his new songs were. Not for lack of material though, he found he could write about the Witcher endlessly. Jaskier had believed himself adept at swallowing down pain. He was proven wrong.
“What can I do for you, Witcher?” He’d asked with a grin, hoping Geralt wouldn’t see through it.
“Nothing, Jaskier.  I want nothing from you.” He’d responded and the bard felt his chest clench at that. Perhaps this meeting had simply been an accident. Geralt didn’t want anything to do with him. He should have been used to it.
“Ah, well then,” Jaskier said, turning around, finding he couldn’t stand to look into those amber eyes any longer, “see you around, Geralt.”
“No - Jaskier, please, wait,” the bard had ground to a halt at that, looking over his shoulder to see a pained expression on that beautiful face, “I - I’ve been looking for you.”
So, yes, Geralt had found him and not accidentally. He had been looking for him.
Jaskier didn’t know what to do with that information.
“I want to apologise.”
The smile finally slipped.
“You…you want to apologise?”
“Yes.” Came the response. Short. Fast. Without any room for doubt.
“Why?”
Geralt looked almost incredulous, almost confused. “Because I said terrible things to you.”
Jaskier furrowed his brows.
“So?” He couldn’t help but ask, not maliciously but entirely curiously.
“‘So?’ What do you mean ‘so’? Jaskier, I said things to you that I didn’t mean, things that I couldn’t stand you believing. I - Jaskier, you - you were there and I was angry and I lashed out.”
A beat of silence.
“After the mountain, I - I tried to be alone and I couldn’t stand it. Even…even before - we’d spend weeks apart but I still never felt as alone as I did after I said…what I said and I - I didn’t mean it and then I went to find Yennefer,”
Ah, Jaskier was an idiot. Add that to the list of flaws. Of course he wasn’t the first one to be sought out by the Witcher. Why would he be?
“Must have been a fun reunion.” Jaskier said, trying to inject some genuine sounding mirth into his voice and the smile that had reappeared. Geralt looked away.
“It wasn’t like that. Although we care for each other, we realised that that wasn’t what we wanted.”
Despite himself, Jaskier’s chest still tightened painfully. Hearing - hell, even seeing - how truly and deeply they cared for each other… His smile didn’t waver.
“Sorry about that.” Was all he could think to say.
“Stop it.”
Jaskier blinked.
“Stop what?”
“That smile. That smile you do when you don’t really want to be smiling. I’ve known you for 20 years, bard, I know which smiles are genuine.”  Geralt sounded frustrated. Almost pained.
“I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“For fuck’s sake, Jaskier. I know I fucked up. I know I did and you deserve to be angry at me but don’t give me that smile. I hate it. I hate that smile.” The Witcher took a step closer and the bard finally let his smile slip. It wasn’t his only mask. Geralt seemed to realise this too, still looking displeased.
“What do you want from me, Geralt?” Jaskier asked, the amusement gone from his voice, but he managed to keep it levelled, not betraying the tiredness behind it.
“I don’t want anything from you, Jaskier,” he paused for a moment. “What I wanted to say was that I talked to Yennefer and she helped me realise that I don’t want a life without you.”
It would’ve sounded romantic if Jaskier wasn’t certain that Geralt would never think of him like that.
“So you do want something from me. You want me to travel with you again.”
Geralt winced and after a moment said, “yes”.
“You hurt me.”
“I know, I’m sorry. I’m - I’m trying to make up for it.”
Jaskier was weak. Add that to the list. He was so fucking weak.
“Okay.”
After that, Geralt would eye the bard warily for a while, as if expecting him to reveal himself as some sort of shapeshifter, a doppler maybe. But Jaskier knew that the Witcher would smell anything like that a mile away so he didn’t really know why he kept glancing at him over the campfire.
Other than that, it seemed like things were back to normal.
Everything forgiven, nothing forgotten. Unfortunately.
Jaskier pushed that out of his mind and returned to his rambles and Witcher-themed ballads. After all, Geralt had said he’d missed him. Surely that had meant the whole ‘Jaskier experience’, prattling and all.
The bard still didn’t know how to comprehend that information. No one had ever missed him in his life. At least, not that he knew of. Maybe they missed how he made them feel, like when the Countess would moan “gods, I missed this,” as he’d trail kisses up her thighs. So no, he didn’t know what Geralt wanted but it was strange. The Witcher smiled at him more, talked to him more. Every time they separated for a time, Geralt would greet him with a small smile. It made the bard’s heart do things and it wasn’t fair.
Perhaps this was a punishment from some god or another, maybe destiny herself or karma. Maybe it was Jaskier’s punishment to have to endure a love for a man who would never reciprocate it, all the while being subjected to that same man openly stating that, yes, he wanted Jaskier around.
A few months later, Geralt had kissed him.
It was after a battle with a Leshy, half wildcat, half bear, with fangs and claws like knives, sharp and long enough to sever a man in half. Jaskier had gotten very close to being that man before Geralt had yanked it back by its tail, swinging his sword as it whirled around in fury. After the fight, the Witcher had surged over to Jaskier, arm bleeding and eyes searching.
“Are you hurt?” He asked, voice gruff. His hands were running over the bard’s body, checking for injuries.
“No.” Jaskier managed to choke out, trying to ignore the feeling of Geralt’s hands skimming over his hips. “But you are. Let me check that arm.” He said, reaching for the Witcher’s bleeding bicep. A hand snapped up and grabbed his wrist, bringing it back down to his side.
“You got too close.” He rumbled, taking a step closer so that he was practically pressing the bard up against the tree behind him. Jaskier swallowed.
“I know. Sorry.” He let out a shaky breath as he noticed those golden eyes sliding down to his lips. Geralt growled and pressed their lips together, one hand behind Jaskier’s head, the other still gripping his wrist. Jaskier was quick to reciprocate, tangling his fingers in the Witcher’s snowy hair and opening his mouth willingly.
Their kiss was all tongues and teeth and sucking and biting. Their sex was much the same. Jaskier knew it was adrenaline and he knew it was just physical, but he couldn’t stop from smiling the next morning, for once waking before the other man. Geralt’s injured arm was wrapped around Jaskier’s waist, the wound already mostly healed. The bard found himself tracing the outline of Geralt’s cheekbone, his jawline, his thumb running over his lips. He had never known the Witcher to sleep so deeply that a touch would not wake him.
He didn’t know whether this was a one time thing but he was grateful it had happened. Even if he only got to taste the man once, he would find a way to make it be enough.
After a while, Jaskier got up and wet a small rag, cleaning himself before rinsing it and beginning to clean the Witcher, it was nothing he hadn’t already seen, some of it he’d even helped wash before. They were still sticky from the night before and they were nowhere near any lakes or rivers. Geralt woke to Jaskier running the cloth across his thigh.
“Sorry, I thought it would be nice to wake up not so icky.” The bard said, pulling his hand away.
Geralt grabbed Jaskier’s hand, “I like it.”
Jaskier smiled and looked away, missing the way his favourite pair of golden eyes lit up at the sight.
“Well, I’m not about to miss my chance at touching that body again.” He said with a whistle. Geralt laughed at that and pulled the bard down, pressing a kiss to his lips that threatened to burst Jaskier’s chest with affection.
The Witcher’s gaze was soft for the rest of the morning.
They’d fall into bed multiple times again. Sometimes it was rough and fast and adrenaline-hazed. Sometimes it was soft and gentle and it left Jaskier feeling heady, his head filling with sweet honey as Geralt’s fingers worked wonders.
It was hard for him not to get attached even more. He knew he shouldn’t. He wouldn’t allow himself to believe that Geralt cared for him romantically. He wouldn’t put his heart through that. Still, it was hard.
So one evening, when a particularly brave woman had chosen to flirt with the Witcher, all but offering herself up on a platter, Geralt had looked to Jaskier with a look in his eye.
“It’s okay, Geralt.” He’d reassured him from the seat across the table, he smiled and Geralt frowned before rejecting the woman bluntly. Jaskier felt a sigh of relief building in his throat as the woman sauntered away.
“What did you mean ‘it’s okay’?” Geralt asked, turning to him with stiff shoulders. Jaskier froze. Was he really going to make him say it aloud?
“I - I mean, it’s okay if you want to sleep with other people, you don’t have to worry about me.” You don’t have to worry about me trying to stop you, about me being hurt.
“What - Jaskier -,” The Witcher struggled for a moment before taking a breath, “is this just about sex for you?”
Jaskier definitely wasn’t expecting that.
“I…is it for you?” He asked. It was a coward’s response. Had he already put that on the list? Add cowardly to the list. Geralt was quiet and Jaskier could feel his heart beating in his throat as those amber eyes searched his.
“No.”
He thinks he might have misheard.
“What?”
“It’s not just about sex for me and if it is for you then we should stop.”
Jaskier’s mouth was open, trying to find a response. He knew what he wanted to say but a declaration of love was probably not what the Witcher wanted.
“I love you, Jaskier.” Geralt said, his face pinched.
Huh.
“I know you don’t want me like that,” Geralt continued, his gaze still on Jaskier’s, “you of all people have seen the worst of me and I wouldn’t blame you for not being able to stomach romance with a Witcher,” the way he said that word made his chest clench, “but I can’t keep doing this, Jaskier.”
Since when had Geralt ever been more eloquent than his bard?
“You think I don’t love you?” Jaskier’s voice came out quiet, hesitant, incredulous. Geralt’s eyes looked wary.
“You -“
“Geralt, how can I not fucking love you? I’ve spent 20 years loving you. Fuck - it - it hurts how much I love you.”
Because it did. Every time Geralt smiled at him or teased him or tied his hair back in the morning, it was like a blow to Jaskier’s chest, but he’d gotten good at swallowing pain, swallowing tears.
He could tell Geralt was still disbelieving and fuck - he knew that the man’s self-loathing ran deep and he couldn’t help himself from saying; “Geralt, you are the best man I’ve ever known and it frustrates me to no end that you don’t see it.”
Geralt was watching him, scanning his face, his eyes, looking for something.
“Then why - why do you hide yourself from me?” He asked, frustrated, “You - you do this smile that - it’s not you, it’s not your smile. There’s this look in your eyes sometimes. It’s like a wall and I hate that you need to hide from me.”
Jaskier’s hand shot out to grab Geralt’s, trying to comfort him. The Witcher had never been big on affection in public but he let his hand be taken by the bard.
“It’s not you, Geralt, I don’t blame you. It’s - it’s not love…what you feel for me.” Jaskier smiled sadly, his years of practice swallowing down tears being put to use. “It’s not love. You’ll get bored of me soon. I’m not permanent. I’m - I’m a fleeting fancy. And that’s okay.”
“You - I - what?” Geralt asked, looking so completely confused that it was almost comical. “Fuck. We’re not talking about this here.” He said, standing up and dragging Jaskier up through the inn and into their shared room. “Now,” the Witcher growled, whirling on the bard and grabbing him by his shirt, “what the fuck did you just say.”
Geralt didn’t scare Jaskier. He could never scare him, but the bard’s eyes were wide as he looked at Geralt’s furious expression.
“I - I don’t know how to say it, Geralt, I - no one’s ever wanted me before, not in a way that matters.” He managed to choke out, his vision turning blurry. Fuck, he thought he’d gotten good at swallowing down tears but Geralt had yet again proven him wrong.
“Who told you that?” He asked furiously.
“No one,” Jaskier responded, pushing Geralt away and scrubbing at his cheeks fiercely, “no one had to. I know, okay? I know.” The Witcher snarled.
“You know nothing, bard, if you don’t know that I love you.”
“Stop it, Geralt.”
“No.”
“I can’t do this if you’re just going to leave me.”
Jaskier froze and a silence passed. His breath was shaking from barely restrained tears.
“I can’t do this, Geralt,” he continued in a quiet voice, “not if you find someone better and leave me. I - I don’t know what I’d do. Everyone I’ve ever known has either left me or grown tired of me. It’s not a pattern that’s going to end with you. I - I don’t think I could take it if you left me again.”
Geralt’s gaze was soft, pitying. Jaskier was pitiful, add that to the list.
“I’ve known you for over 20 years and I have not grown tired.”
“What is 20 years to a Witcher? And even so, you did, you did grow tired of me.”
‘If life could give me one blessing, it would be to take you off my hands.’
“I didn’t grow tired of you. I grew tired of myself and my ability to fuck everything up.” Geralt said softly, “And I did, I fucked it up.”
“Geralt, it’s not love.”
“Stop saying that.”
“It’s not.”
Geralt snarled and pushed Jaskier up against the wall, leaning in close so that Jaskier had nowhere to look except for those golden eyes. Those disarmingly honest, golden eyes.
“Listen to me, Jaskier, I love you.”
Jaskier wouldn’t cry. He swallowed down a shaky breath.
“I’m irritating.”
“You are.”
“I talk too much.”
“You do. I like it.”
“I’m greedy.”
“You enjoy finery. It’s not the same.”
“I’m arrogant.”
“Clearly you’re not.”
“I can’t fight. I’m a coward.”
“You’re one of the bravest men I know. To the point of recklessness, it worries me.”
“It does?”
“It does.”
Geralt’s lips were grazing over his now, teasingly. Jaskier smiled, genuinely. Geralt smiled right back.
“You love me?” He asked, voice breaking.
“I do.”
And Jaskier cried, finally.
Jaskier cried and laughed and kissed Geralt. It was bad. It was wet and sloppy and he loved it. And Geralt loved it too. Because he loved him. Jaskier. He loved him.
Then Geralt had dragged him to bed, whispering praise into his skin as if hoping it would soak through him and settle in his bones. Jaskier had done the same because fuck, he was in love and it was dizzying.
“You know,” Jaskier began the next morning, earning a grunt from the Witcher laying under him, “I think last night was the longest I’ve ever heard you speak.” The chest beneath the bard’s head rumbled with a laugh.
“Fuck off.”
“I guess I just bring it out of you, Witcher.” Jaskier continued, grinning devilishly.
“I will kick you out of this bed, bard.”
“Please, I dare you to try and rip me off of you. I have melded my body onto yours.”
Geralt simply grumbled in response. It was a grumble of acceptance, Jaskier could tell. He could always tell.
-
They ran into Yennefer two months later and Jaskier found that he wasn’t concerned. He wasn’t worried Geralt would return to her. Partly because when she spotted them the first thing out of her mouth was;
“Finally. For Melitele’s sake, that took much too long.”
Geralt had looked at her with a pointedly unamused gaze which she’d returned with a wink.
Later, after they had helped her with a monster-slaying job so she could collect some sort of venom, the three had shared drinks.
“I take full credit for this, by the way.” She’d said, gesturing to the two of them and the arm wrapped around Jaskier’s waist.
“In what way is this your doing?” Jaskier had asked.
“I’m the one who told him to tell you how he felt.”
“Which he did months after he’d found me.”
“Is his lack of communication skills my fault?”
“If he didn’t do it when you told him to then it doesn’t count.”
“Fuck off, it counts.”
“It most certainly does not.”
Geralt took a sip of his ale as the two continued to bicker.
Not long after, Yennefer had decided to join them - “graced” them with her presence as she’d put it. Jaskier could tell that Geralt and the sorceress still cared for each other deeply. He couldn’t really talk though, he’d found himself caring for her as well. When she’d called him her “friend” he had practically glowed. Then Ciri had barrelled into their lives and their little circle had grown and gods, did he love that little girl.
“Where are your parents, Jaskier?” She had once asked as he was soothing her back to sleep after a nightmare. It was always Cintra burning, Jaskier ached for her. She was too young for all of this.
“I don’t know, honey, I haven’t spoken to them for years.”
“Why not?”
“We were never really a family.”
Ciri paused before smiling widely.
“But you have a family now.”
Jaskier smiled back, brushing the hair out of her face and listening to the sounds of Yennefer sleeping soundly and Geralt mumbling something to Roach.
“I do.”
Summary:
He was pretty sure he transmigrated into a fanfic of [The Lovely Princess] — after all, he would’ve remembered if Princess Athanasia had a younger twin who died.
// A retelling of WMMAP with a vital difference — Athanasia has a younger twin brother.
——————————
2. aiming towards the future
——————————
There was something about being a five-year-old kid that made chocolate so goddamn appealing. It had to be the sugar rush, even though the additional compliments was a nice ego boost. He was pretty good about having sweets in moderation, but he would never say no to extra sweets. In fact, he was fairly certain that Lily was grateful that he didn’t indulge in chocolates as much as Athanasia did.
Then again, she probably wouldn’t even notice the few times that he’s used Athy’s cutesy tricks on his own. While Athy projected herself as the sociable twin who was always enthusiastic, he made sure to act the part as the shy and quiet twin. Whenever he passed by a maid or whoever else, he made it a point to notice them, hide his face behind his papers, peek over his papers, and shyly wave his hand at them in greeting. He wasn’t too shy around Lily, she’s been their nanny since birth after all, but he would always cling to her skirt and look up at people with wide eyes.
He was a decent actor — he practised a lot when they were finally coherent enough, and Athy would always nod like an annoyingly proud older sister when she approved of his shy act. Still, he also felt a bit proud of Athanasia for being able to effortlessly charm the maids. There were a few times when he could blatantly feel her embarrassment at having to act like such a kid.
Normally, they were never far apart — it was something like a routine of sorts, to establish how they’re always together, and that one is never far from the other. He made sure to declare to Lily that he was going to explore the palace the next day and try to find the perfect place to hide treasure for his sister to find. Naturally, Lily would inform the palace staff to maintain their distance so that they wouldn’t overwhelm him too much before the next day happened.
It was also the perfect excuse to find hiding places for their future funds. He’ll make a few hiding places obvious, and he’ll ensure that the other hiding spots would only be found by Athy.
So with a bundle of papers in hand, and a crayon in hand, he began to wander the familiar halls of the Ruby Palace, doing his best to draw the scenes and map out the entire place. Asides for the blatant decor that marked the Ruby Palace as the palace for concubines, it was all pretty fancy looking.
If you ignored some dusty spots here and there and the cracks in the older parts of the palace.
——————————
He got carried away, but then again, so did Athy.
While Athy was drawing the usual flowers, she ended up writing down his and Lily’s name. Meanwhile, he was drawing his maps and decided to write “treasure map for Athy” (he was fairly certain that he misspelled two of those words), but it was enough for everyone to declare him and Athy to be geniuses. For him, he was praised for his artistic talents, while Athy was praised for her literary understanding.
It wasn’t easy for him to learn the language, but Athy seemed to take to it like a fish in water.
His drawing of the castle layout was also praised so much that it practically became this world’s equivalent of a fire escape map. Multiple copies were made, for the few maids both old and new who occasionally got lost in the Ruby Palace.
And so, their education began, and he was once again tormented by classwork.
  ‘Hurry, hurry!’ Athanasia seemed to rush, causing him to blink as he looks up from his book to see her quickly gathering her treasure. She then proceeded to… tie the bags to her legs.
‘Athy, you don’t have to go that far just to hide your treasure. We could literally ask Lily if we could turn one of the unused rooms into a treasure room from all of our little ‘treasure hunts’, you know.’
‘It can’t be helped, Athan!’ Athy immediately argued, looking at him with a pouty frown. ‘I know Lily’s safe, but I won’t take any risks! Who knows if there are any other maids like the previous head maid? No, my pretties are staying with me!’
‘Suit yourself,’ he shrugged.
  (Later, when Lily tucks them both in for bed, he can hear his sister constantly grumbling in pain from her thoughts. And he’ll adamantly laze in bed, fully prepared to take full advantage of this nap time to sleep the day away.
Athy was definitely annoyed at him — she could practically hear him saying “I told you so.”
He should’ve, but he didn’t.)
——————————
‘Sneaking out again?’ Athanase dryly thought as he turned and watched his sister quickly get up. He curls up into his soft and comfy bed, holding a large, cat plush close to him as he drowsily rubbed his eyes.
It was the fourth time, wasn’t it? Did she really have to go this far just to ensure that the little gems that she was hoarding remained in her care?
‘Almost like a dragon,’ he couldn’t help but snort. ‘Hoarding their treasure all the time.’
‘I heard that,’ she gave him a flat look.
‘Don’t care,’ he stuck his tongue out at her.
‘Did you want to join me?’ she raised a brow, turning to look back at him as she held her bag of goodies. ‘Or are you going to lay in bed and do nothing like usual?’
‘I’ll be having a nap. Try not to screech your thoughts out unless you actually need me,’ he seemed to doze off. ‘You know where to find me.’
‘Ugh! You’re so lazy…’ she wrinkled her nose.
     (Contrary to popular belief, Athanasia did not screech her thoughts out.)
      What happens is, at first, he feels immense excitement thrumming through his veins, a familiar feeling to when Athy was immensely happy. It was easier to tell when they were in proximity, but harder with the more distance between them. He brushes it off, content to just relax and laze around in bed when the feeling abruptly ended, freezing like a deer in headlights.
Athanase could feel the shaking fear creeping up, a crawl beneath his skin that caused him to shudder. The feeling caused him to immediately sit up, frowning as he tried to remember where his sister had gone.
Without giving it much thought, he quickly got up out of bed, hugging his plushy as his brain scrambled for any recollection of where Athy’s new treasure hoard would be.
And — for some strange reason — he knew exactly where she was.
     ‘Athy!’ he called out the moment he felt the fear fade from his chest and began to hear her familiar voice. It was quiet, in the back of his mind, but he could still hear the panic in her tone.
And that was when he saw the two men.
The blonde-haired man was turning away after he tosses Athanasia over to the red-haired guard, and if Athanase was thinking properly, he wouldn’t have charged straight in. And maybe, he would’ve been able to look at Athy in the eyes and snicker at Athy’s misfortune on another day.
“Stranger danger!” he cried, throwing his big cat plush at the red-haired knight who dodged the plush with ease and turned back to look at him with a startled stare. “L-Let go of Athy! She’s my big sister!”
The plush had hit Claude right in the back, causing him to halt.
He glanced back over his shoulder, staring at Athan, his blue eyes glimmering with a dangerous shine.
‘Athan!’ his sister internally screamed, sounding every bit as horrified as he had felt as she looked on in horror. And, well, he certainly felt as if he were in a horror game.
Whether that fear belonged to him or Athanasia, he wasn’t quite sure.
  If Athanase had stopped to think for a moment, if he paused and took in his surroundings and racked his brain to remember Felix Robain, he would’ve remembered the red-haired guard, the one who was always standing at Claude’s side. If he gave the blonde-haired man another glance, perhaps he would’ve realized who the man truly was.
If only, if only, if only.
Unfortunately, Athanase was not thinking properly.
  (Well, he was always having a vague outline of a plan for the future when he wasn’t in the mood to laze around. Charming people with his cute looks, learning enough in anticipation for the day he would have to converse with nobles, and figuring out who would be best to help him and his sister.
He gave plenty of people consideration, the maids aside — he could befriend Ezekiel, perhaps. Ensure that Athanasia has trustworthy friends, also.
It’s just that his first choice for a conversation partner had never been the Emperor himself.)
Friends With Benefits (Jeff Wittek Imagine) Part 10
Summary: Jeff and Y/N have been hooking up for a while. The whole vlog squad assumes they’re dating and Y/N does too but Jeff doesn’t like labels. He eventually starts to express interest in Natalie.
Note: Planning on making this a multiple part series, depending on how good it does.  You’re 21 & Latina in this (maybe) series. Also, I’d like to apologize for the typos, if there is any. I’m just illiterate lmao.
Side note: I am SO SORRY I’ve been MIA since May? June?. I was planning to write chapters throughout the summer but this quarantine thing really affected my mental health. I hope you guys understand. Also, I’m starting my last semester of college next week so Idk my posting schedule.
Warnings! Pregnancy
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 , Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9
Word Count: 2.1k
Okay so now that y/n and Jeff had a rather… Interesting time in Big Bear, they end it with bad news…. And Jeff still hasn’t told his parents about y/n. Christmas is in less than a week! What can go wrong?
12/20/19
Y/n: JEFF. YOU NEVER TOLD YOUR PARENTS THAT I WAS PREGNANT???!
Jeff: hey hey hey, can you calm down. Knowing the piece of shit I can be, I didn’t think I was going to be in your life. But look, I surprised myself!
Y/n: So absolutely no one knows?
Jeff: Karyn does…. Maybe my brother Steven too. Karyn basically knows the whole story.
Y/n: Are your parents going to be mad?
Jeff: Haha no. My ma has been begging me to straighten myself out and have a family. If they knew the whole story,... then they’d kill me.
Y/n: Is it just going to be us and the rest of your fam?
Jeff: Oh I forgot to tell you, Jonah’s family is coming too.
Y/n: Really?! Thank god. If it gets awkward, I can just stuff my face in the corner w/ Jonah.
Jeff: Don’t do that. You have to eat healthy.
Y/n: *gives Jeff a death glare*
Jeff: At least try to. Come on I just don’t want any other risks for the girls.
Y/n: Yeah…. I guess. What are we going to do if they’re deaf? I don’t know whether to choose the cochlear implant for selfish reasons or to let them grow up deaf and learn sign language.
Jeff: If they grow up deaf, we’re gonna have to take one or both of them to speech therapy and that’s going to be extremely difficult because they’re not going to hear if what they’re saying is pronounced right.
Y/n: Maybe we should give them the implant and make them learn sign language? I mean, it’s always beneficial to know another language.
Jeff: But we also have to remember that there’s a chance the implant won’t work and they’re going to have to grow up deaf. Also, remember that there’s a possibility that only one of them is born deaf.
Y/n: I hate how we’re talking about this before Christmas. I thought this was supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year.
Jeff: It is but hey, if my ma gets mad at us, we’re breaking the ice w/ the babies possibly being deaf.
Y/n: JEFF.
Jeff: Oh shut up you know you would do that too w/ your parents.
Y/n: *rolls her eyes* I mean… you’re not wrong.
Jeff: Now hurry up and pack your stuff. We have an early flight tomorrow.
12/21/19
*At the airport w/ the Antonyan’s*
Suzie: I can’t believe we’re spending Christmas in New York!
Jonah: It’s gonna be so cold there though.
Vardon: Shut up Jonah. It’s a free present from David.
Jeff: Hey I’m gonna give y’all a heads up that my parent’s do not know that y/n is pregnant.
Everybody: *looks at Jeff for being a dumbass*
Suzie: You’re so stupid.
Jonah: I agree
Jonah’s mom: She look like she gonna give birth tomorrow and you no tell your parents?!
Jonah’s dad: You in big trouble Jeff
Y/n: *Laughing*
Jeff: Let’s just get on the plane.
*They arrive in New York*
Y/n: Jeff, we can’t just show up to your parent’s house and they see how pregnant I am. It’s going to ruin Christmas!
Jeff: Don’t worry. I’m sure they're going to be fine. I think.
Y/n: JEFF.
Jeff: *sees his older sister* Hey look it’s Karyn!
Karyn: *moves Jeff out of the way* Oh my god y/n! Can't believe you’re having twins!
Y/n: Jeff hasn’t told your parents about me yet.
Karyn: *turns to Jeff* JEFF ARE YOU FUCKIN STUPID
Jeff: Hey can y’all wait to yell at me after we leave the airport. People are staring
*In the car*
Karyn: Jeff I know I gave you a deadline to tell Ma and Pa but that didn’t mean to WAIT UNTIL THE DEADLINE.
Jeff: Everybody just loves to yell at me today
Y/n: How do you honestly think they’re going to react.
Karyn: They probably think Natalie is gonna come
Y/n: *getting madder by the second* THEY KNEW ABOUT NATALIE AND NOT ABOUT ME WHEN I WAS WITH YOU BEFORE HER AND FOR MUCH LONGER.
Jeff: Thanks a lot Karyn why tf did you have to say that.
Karyn: Hey, this is your fault. Not ours. You have to think of a way to tell mom and dad.
Suzie: *sitting in the back* This is going to be an interesting Christmas.
*Jeff’s parent’s house*
Jeff: Here goes nothing. *opens the door* hey ma?? *looks around*
Karyn: Maybe they left to get last minute things for Christmas.
Y/n: Cool, gives me time to hide.
Karyn: Hun, everything is going to be fine.
*another car pulls into the driveway*
Y/n: Oh god I’m going to throw up
Jeff: How about you go to my old room and I talk to them.
Y/n: *walks to Jeff’s old room* What if Jeff’s parents are disappointed that I’m not Natalie? They knew about her and not me.
*Jeff’s parents walk in*
Jeff’s mom: My baby boy! I know it’s only been a month but I love it everytime you come home. Sorry we weren’t here. We were buying more food just in case. You didn’t bring Natalie?
Jeff: About that, her and I are done… for good.
Jeff’s dad: Oh well, that’s too bad son.
Karyn: *whispers* But he did bring someone else…
Jeff: *shoves Karyn* hey, shut it. Ma…. Pa…. There was someone else before Natalie… We went out for a while but I broke it off w/ her cause I was stupid and now we’re back together…
Jeff’s dad: Okay, I don’t see the problem? Is she here?
Jeff: Ummm she is… But there’s something else. She’s pregnant… and they’re mine.
*Jeff’s parents both laugh*
*Everybody else laughs nervously*
Jeff’s mom: Good joke, now where is she?
Karyn: Ma, he’s not joking…
*Jeff’s parents look at everybody*
Jeff’s dad: Oh Jeffrey, what did you do.
Jeff: No no no, everything is fine between us. It was ugly between us at first but now we’re back together.
Jeff’s mom: *processes* WAIT. Did you say “they’re mine” as in PLURAL?!
Jeff: Umm yeah. She’s having twins.
Jeff’s mom: I don't know whether to be angry or excited. I mean I’m going to be a grandmother again!
Jeff’s Dad: If he’s on good terms w/ her and is back together w/ her, I see no problem.
Jeff: Y/n you wanna come out?
Y/n: *Walks out slowly* Hii
Jeff’s mom: My god, how far along are you?
Y/n: 5 months
Jeff’s mom: *turns to Jeff* You kept this from us for HOW LONG.
Jeff: We can talk about that later but at least give a warm welcome to the mother of your soon to be granddaughters.
Jeff’s family: IT’S TWIN GIRLS
Jeff’s mom: Oh my god I feel like fainting but I won’t. Oh dear congratulations. I’m going to spoil those little girls rotten. *hugs y/n*
Y/n: Thank you so much. I was afraid of how you would react.
Jeff’s dad: His mom has been begging him to settle down for years. She finally got her wish.
Jeff’s mom: This is a Christmas gift I wasn't expecting at all but I am so happy for the both of you. Jeffrey is a natural when he spends time w/ his sister’s children.
Y/n: haha that’s good to know.
Jeff’s dad: Dear they’re probably all tired. Let them rest for a bit and we’ll go out later tonight.
*Jeff and Y/n take a nap in Jeff’s old room*
Y/n: Well, that went better than expected. I just wish my parents were like that…
Jeff: Babe don’t worry, they’ll come around.
Y/n: I doubt it. When my older sister moved out, they didn’t talk to her for a year but when our older brother moved out, my parents helped him w/ everything! All I’ve done is please them and I do one thing they don’t like and I’M DISOWNED?? QUE SE VAYAN AL CARAJO!
Jeff: Hey hey hey, calm down. You don’t wanna stress the girls out.
Y/n: I mean, at least my siblings are on my side but they live in Seattle.
Jeff: We also have like 20 friends who will always be w/ us. The twins will always have family around.
Y/n: I’m just wondering when we should tell them about the deaf thing.
Jeff: I think we should wait until after the holidays. Maybe in February? I just think we need our time to process and prepare ourselves for anything before it’s confirmed once they’re born.
Y/n: Yeah, you’re right. But February is my birthday though… I don’t wanna ruin the fun w/ that.
Jeff: Hurry up and get dressed. I have a little surprise for you but you have to close your eyes when you get in the car.
Y/n: Jeff please don’t send me into pre-term labor.
Jeff: Don’t worry. It’s nothing bad. I think you’ll love it.
*Jeff drives to Brooklyn*
Jeff: Okay we're almost there. Are your eyes still closed?
Y/n: Yeeees. Boy I’m getting impatient.
Jeff: We’re here. I’ll help you get out of the car. Okay now you can open your eyes.
Y/n: *turns around* NO FUCKING WAY. RIMINI’S.
Tumblr media
Jeff: Yeah. I remember you sayin that you came to this bakery all the time. And that they had your favorite cookies in the world.
Y/n: Jeff. I haven't been here in 10 years. My grandpa would always take me here. I lived 5 minutes down the street.
Jeff: That’s why I brought you here. I knew how much it meant to you.
Y/n: I know you’re not proposing but I would’ve said yes in a millisecond. Now let’s go inside! I have to get their italian butter cookies and I’m bringing a bunch back to LA. I don’t know the next time I’ll  be able to come back.
Jeff: I mean, we’d be coming back quite often after the babies are born to visit my family.
Y/n: Okay but I’m still bringing a bunch back. You can’t get anything like this back in LA.
Jeff: But don’t go overboard w/ the sweets. You don’t want gestational diabetes.
Y/n: *death glares* You sayin I eat too much?
Jeff: No no no, you know what I mean.
Y/n: *pouts* But they taste so good :(
Jeff: Which means you should ration them as much as possible. Also, when we film for my channel, you might wanna hide these from Jonah.
Y/n: I swear to god if Jonah even THINKS about eating my damn cookies, I’m going to jail for manslaughter…
Jeff: Hun, what did I say about the anger. Don’t stress the girls out.
*Back at Jeff’s house*
Jeff’s dad: Well look who finally came back. We wanted to take you guys out but y’all left.
Jeff: Sorry pops, Y/n and I went to Brooklyn. She lived there until she was 11.
Jeff’s mom: Oh wow, I wouldn’t have guessed you were from New York too.
Y/n: Yeah, my parents moved my older siblings and I to Seattle because it was getting hard w/ the cost of living. Also, my grandfather passed away, so there wasn’t really any reason for us to stay there. My parent’s LOVED living here.
Jeff’s dad: Your parents are from New York too?
Y/n: No. My parents immigrated from Peru. My dad came in the 70s as a teenager and went back and forth. My mom immigrated here in the 80s. They still have a bunch of friends here and they still know the city like they still live here.
Jeff’s mom: Why didn’t you invite them for Christmas in the city. I bet it would bring back so many good memories for them.
Y/n: *sighs* Well, we're kind of not talking at the moment… They were really disappointed when I told them I was pregnant. My older siblings are supportive though.
Karyn: Well that’s good that you have older siblings that will always look out for you. That’s why I give dumb dumb over there *points at Jeff* a hard time.
Jeff: What the fuck.
Karyn: They’ll come around eventually but even if it takes an eternity, just know that you have us now. We’re family! Even if Jeff somehow messes things up w/ you in the future.
Jeff: Ma can you tell her to stop!
Jeff’s mom: Karyn, stop bullying your brother.
Next chapter is CHRISTMAAAAS. (Don’t worry it’s already done. I won't post it for another couple of days) Also, some of the stuff in this chapter is kind of based on me. (Not the pregnant thing. I’ve never been pregnant lmao) But I was born in Brooklyn and the immigrant parents/ moving away thing is from my real life. (but not the moving away cause of grandpa. He was still alive for a couple years after.) But the cookies from Rimini’s… Will change your LIFE.
