Hi everyone! I’m very happy to announce that Call me by your name is having a new baby this year. Their new child is a dark-very-angsty-french (synonyms) movie. Unfortunatly it has a very lame name but it will break your heart all the same. If you have a chance to see it, please do. If you’re a cmbyn writer, please write something inspired by it so I’ll have a chance to break my heart in two different ways at the same time? 😍 not sure if anyobody would actually write something like this so I’ll may have to do it myself. in the next 5 years or so.
Anyway, Arrête avec tes mensonges, ladies and gentlemen:

James: what's honey in french?
Sirius: miel, why?
James: no reason
*later*
James: can I add an annotation to your book, miel?
Reg, holding back laughter: what?
James: what!? I read!!!
Reg: did you just...
James:
Reg: I think you meant cheri, you were calling me literal honey, not the petname.
James, bright red and grumbling: stupid french

Transcript below the cut:
Spencer: Where’s Asses? Asher: Spence, I know you know how to say ‘Atlas’. Spencer: Uh-uh. Asses!
Asher: [laughs] Well, Atlas had to stay home and work. Spencer: Will he come over soon? Asher: Not today, kiddo. Maybe you should ask him to come visit you next weekend. Ask your mom to help you call him.
Spencer: MOMMY!! Asher: Not right now, goofball. Tonight. After dinner. Do you know how to ask him in French? Spencer: [nods] viens me rendre visite!
Asher: I’ll take your word for it. Don’t forget to say please. Spencer: s'il te plait. Asher: Right. Ask him just like that. [winks]

#alt with eyes hidden under the cut#cofagrigus#their eyes are shiny. made of plastic. so they're looking a little bright. apologies for this#so. generally when i have quarrels about the pronunciation of a pokémon's name (since i don't watch anipoké)#where someone else and i pronounce the same pokémon's name differently. which doesn't happen very often‚ since typically i talk about#pokémon mostly entirely in text. because most of the communication about things i like happens in text. and the pokémon games#are not voice acted. so pronunciation of their names is sparse and sometimes limited to anipoké but even they're inconsistent i think#but whenever i have quarrels about the pronunciation of a name. someone else and i pronounce it differently. i go to pokédex 3d pro#on the 3ds. because every time you go to a pokémon's dex entry‚ the pokédex guy says their name out loud#i basically treat this as gospel for how to pronounce pokémon names. i've been proven wrong a lot but i've also been proven right a lot#and this guy. oooohhh this guy. before pokédex 3d pro i pronounced this guy's name as though the F-slur was right in the middle#only recently did i learn that it kinda sounds like “grievous‚” [kʰɐ.fə.'gɻiː.gəs]#at least. that's how the pokédex 3d pro guy says it#whereas i had been pronouncing it [kʰow.'fæg.ɻɪ.gəs]. so. you can see the issue that arises with that pronunciation#a lot of these pronunciations that i have to double-check just live in my head. and it's only when i say them out loud that i realize#how i'm saying them. like how i pronounce “centiskorch” as [sɑ̃.t͡si̠.skoʁʃ] for some fucking reason. my brain sees it and is like#yeah that's? a french word? even though it looks nothing like one#i also tend to pronounce “grumpig” as ['gʀʊm.pɪç] because of the “ig” at the end. i guess. german instinct#of course these are pronunciations i never say out loud but the first time i Have to say this pokémon's name out loud i'll go#oh yeah! it's not pronounced like that. i should probably not say that#and then i do not. just a fun little story about my twisted and fucked up mind. a little peek into my enigmatic brainspace#jesus christ these are some of the longest tags i've ever written. i'm gonna stop

so I'm finally reading The Three Musketeers! I've watched a lot of the film and show adaptions of it over the years, but I never actually read the novel. and hey! 2023! new year, new reading list! I checked out a couple translations of the books (including the other novels), and oh my god I'm having such a good time. I'll probably redesign everyone a few times as I continue to read it, but this scene made me laugh so I wanted to draw it

Okay, polyglot queen! If it isn't too personal to ask, why do you speak bulgarian, russian and italian. One of them I assume as a mandatory second/third language in school. But why the other two? Either way 💕
My legacy as a polyglot 🤍 Arabic and English I learned as my first/second language and I learned Hebrew very young as well. I ended up doing most of my schooling in Russia at a ballet academy, but they taught everything in Russian so I had to take a year long course on Russian before even entering the academy. I met my best friend in the entire world in that year learning Russian and she is from Italy so I ended up just learning Italian from her, I also spend a lot of time in Italy and have partially lived there so it was easy to pick up! Bulgarian is the last language i consider myself to have truly learned, and it’s just because I worked and lived in Bulgaria for a little while lmao. I basically just learn languages of the places I live and I happen to live a lot of places 👍

"Do we use the Greek spelling or the anglicized spelling?"
"If you don't use the Greek letters people can't look it up."
"Okay but it looks real weird and out of place and I'm pretty sure it is all entirely wrong."
"All of the languages are probably wrong, on account of all four translator sites giving different translations and there being a whole mess of contextual and cultural usage your dumb one language speaking ass does not understand."
"Okay...so what do I do?"
"Leave it as is and find people to help properly translate things later."
"But it looks wrong now."
"It's a first draft. It is allowed to look wrong."

Language Learning Journey Update
It's been a while since I've been on Tumblr! In the months I've been away, I was focusing heavily on Persian and strengthening my skills in all areas of the language before I switch to a maintenance phase and pick up another language. During this time, I also got really into planning and journaling which has helped me better structure language learning in my schedule as well as reflect on how best to structure my time.
I certainly learned a lot from this time but the biggest takeaway for me is that my biggest pain point when learning a language is acquiring vocabulary. I tend to let it happen rather naturally (slowly) and while it's a valid method, it also leads me to stagnate and plateau. That's why, with the change in my language learning plans, I've also restructured my learning schedule (for, like, the millionth time).
Learning Two Languages Simultaneously
I was originally planning on (re)learning Korean after going through the intensive 3 months of Persian but recent developments in my professional life have pushed me to start learning Cantonese instead. My goal for Cantonese is mostly to reach a decent listening comprehension level and a basic speaking level.
Although I'm learning Cantonese from scratch, I feel that I still have a long way to go with Persian. I am not ready for a traditional maintenance phase, but I know I am close to burn out and have to dial it back. The schedule is structured around Persian and I fill the rest of the time I was using for Persian previously, for Cantonese.
ON/OFF Weeks System
This system was inspired by my need to find a different way to learn and focus on vocabulary while also avoiding burn out in Persian.
ON Weeks: These are weeks where I will be focusing on 1 skill in Persian in the mornings. For example, on Monday, I will be reading intensively (e.g., breaking down phrases, re-reading, translating, compiling vocabulary) for about 25 minutes. In the afternoons, I am working on getting exposure to Cantonese and learning the sound system.
OFF Weeks: These weeks involve only practicing the Persian vocabulary I accumulated during the ON weeks. I'll be re-reading them, defining or looking up words on Forvo, writing practice sentences, uploading them to HelloTalk, and correcting them. I also do some light, passive activities like listening while I clean something or reading for a few minutes without stopping to translate.
Off weeks don't really change much in the way of Cantonese. I will continue with my plan as is.
Maintenance languages: I do have to maintain French and Spanish, however, I am lucky that I interact with languages almost on a daily basis. When I foresee that a day may be void of one, I'll stack it with another hobby of mine (e.g., journaling in Spanish or reading in French).

An ON week coming up.
