Very interesting to me that Abigail preferred Hannibal over Will, but Will had an emotional connection to her that Hannibal didn't - or at least not to the same extent.

I think maybe one day he could've found a stronger bond considering she had also killed and eaten people, but during the series she's really just a tool. Hannibal uses her to like... babytrap Will. And tbf it worked, Will didn't tell Jack what he knew when he discovered Abigail murdered that guy - if he was willing to cover for her, maybe eventually he'd cover for Hannibal too, the 3 of them too intrinsically tied for him to separate, I mean that's the trapping part. But she was just a means to an end, a relationship Hannibal nurtured for his own gain with Will....whereas Will really did view her as his daughter.

Very interesting to me...off-put by Will (especially towards the end of s1), but he had the most vested interest in her well-being out of the pair...

Character relations/opinions!

Alright before I post any more Battle Addict stuff I should probably explain what a League Council is. Here's a summarized diagram:

A Pokemon League is a region's network of specialized skilled trainers. It is run by the League Council, which includes finance, HR, marketing, PR, and other managing departments which are divided into different branches depending on who they work with.

This is all to say that everything gets messy very quickly when news of the diagnosis spreads through the network. Originally the diagnosis was supposed to be private information for only the Battle and League departments, however certain higher ups felt it was a safety risk and notified gym leaders as well in the event of future collaborations.

The network is mostly divided into people who are positive/neutral about the news, and people who feel negatively about the twins as a result. Coworkers who were already familiar/close with the two tend to be positive, or at least supportive, whereas those who didn't know them got another reason to avoid them. Some people think they should go on leave for "recovery", but some are more forward and want them terminated.

If you're wondering where Cynthia falls in this, she's a foreign top league worker (Sinnoh Champion) who is hosted in Unova. Basically she has dept. employees assigned to help her connect to people around the region and get different services if requested. She's basically watching everything unfold from the sidelines, with every interview about her opinion boiling down to "lol if you're scared of people stronger than you then get good". She does also bring up historic accounts of CM/HCCM though, mostly to clarify that CM is not a new or scary thing. She's not for or against the twins, rather just hoping to use this as an opportunity to teach others.

I didn't end up drawing her because I got tired but Elesa got the news too!! She actually got it before everyone else since the twins decided to go tell her beforehand. The general scene basically had Ingo and Emmet deliberating in the car, Ingo telling Emmet it's not too late to turn around and go home while Emmet was hesitant but adamant that they needed to tell her first. She probably took it the worst out of everyone but that's mostly just cause it caught her off guard that her friends would just randomly drop in to deliver the news. She's still rooting for them though, mostly trying to support the Subway with more collaborative events to make the twins look better after the hit from the media. She also tries to rework Emmet's restraints where possible, usually trying to make them look more cohesive with the rest of an outfit or trying to make them less visible (cause as much as Emmet says it's not a big deal it's still the first thing he looks at in his reflection).

By anyways, pov you have been captured by Ronny and have gained enough affection with him that you're able to prevent another torture session 🤪 spdjfspd

He was taunting you with the knife, twirling it in his hand as he slowly lurked towards you. It was the same song and dance, and he loved it – you squirming against the cuffs around your wrists, arms bound to the pole behind you, as Ronny crept forward with that snarky grin on his face.

“Ronny, please. You don’t have to do this-”

“Oh really? And why not?”

He crept closer, relishing your fear. You could see the excitement in his eyes, the malicious intent. But even despite the situation, a part of you wanted to believe that he could change, that he could be talked out of this. You’ve seen the softer sides of him by this point, there’s clearly something there worth exploring. You weren’t sure whether you were being quite honest with your words either, but if you could just get him to listen, maybe you could at least stop him. It was worth a shot anyways.

“Because deep down, you’re a good person.”

He stalls for a moment, looking at you with disbelief as the smile on his face cracks a bit.

“You… you think I’m a good person?”

He looks almost offended, then hesitant. He stalls again, his eyes turning away from you as he lets out a small laugh.

“Y-you can’t-! Haha…. fuck…!”

A strained smile creeps onto his face again as he stumbles slightly. Another laugh slips from his throat as he lets his arms fall to his side, his eyes traveling elsewhere. He doesn’t seem to know what to do, you’ve never really seen him like this before. He just continues to laugh, his face changing from disbelief to thinking, to amusement and… guilt? He runs a hand through his hair as he almost curls in on himself, the knife still hanging loosely in his hand. His face suddenly twists to anger as he spins around, chucking the knife with all of his might as it clangs across the room.

“FUCK!!!”

His hands are back to his head, clutching his face as he lets in a sharp inhale, a scowl peeking through. His arms are trembling.

He roughly swings them back down to his sides, finally turning back to face you. He falters as he takes a step forward.

“W-why-! Ugh-! Why do you always-?!”

He’s struggling to find the words, you can see that clearly in his eyes. You always knew that it was difficult for him to control his temperament. The same applies now. He catches himself, his eyes darting around uncertainly before landing back onto your bound form.

“Fuck, why do you always make me… feel this way?!”

His voice is strained, as if it was difficult for him to even say those words in the first place. He turns away from you again, almost embarrassed as he paces back and forth. You can practically see the tension in his body as his mouth continues to move, the words failing to come out at first.

“I-I don’t… Fuck- I don’t get you! What can you possibly see in me?! I’m not a good person! I never fucking was!”

He spins back around to look at you, with almost desperation behind his eyes. You can tell he’s holding himself back.

“So why the fuck do you keep-…! Gah- why do you care so much?!”

His hands are shaking, he doesn’t know what to do with them.

“Because who else will?”

He freezes as your words hit him. He doesn’t say anything, his eyes slowly turning to the ground as he takes it in. It’s hard to tell just what he’s thinking, he’s not showing it on his face at all. You finally see his mouth twitch slightly, the muscles in his face slowly turning into a frown as his shoulders tremble. He’s clearly caught off guard as the first tear falls down his cheek, shaking his head he finally brings his hands up to try to hide his face. The tears keep coming, it starts becoming difficult for him to catch it all as he incessantly wipes his eyes. This is the first time you’ve ever seen him so distraught before, it’s the first time you’ve ever seen him cry.

A strained hiccup slips through as his body starts to tremble. It soon becomes more difficult for him to hold back his sobs. Silent curses spew from his lips, clearly embarrassed as he cries in front of you. You can’t tell whether he’s happy or despaired. Maybe it’s a mix of both.

Your eyes snap back up to his form as he starts to move towards you, unsure if he’s about to lash out. Instead, he stops next to you, plopping down to your side as he buries his face in his hands.

The two of you continue to sit like this for the next couple of minutes, with Ronny crying by your side as you remain tied to the pole. He fully keeps to himself, refusing to lift his head. It’s an almost awkward silence, with neither of you choosing to acknowledge the other. His strained hiccups and sniffles fill the room, unable to fully compose himself.

He’s an ugly crier.

I loved NewWave and it's nominated for my top reads 2023, BUT THE JASON FICLET??? I thought it was going to be a light read but it hit me full force in the face because I didn't expect to identify so much with Jason! When I read your Jason it was like I was reading myself and I want you to know that I started reading it early at night and finished it at dawn because I constantly had to stop and cry because of how much my heart resonated with his! loved it

I'm glad you identified with him! Jason is very much a character who's a little like me too. He's a born writer, and his way of using fiction to put the world in a framework that he can understand is very relatable. It leaves him a little out of touch with the reality of situations, but that's a feature and not a bug.

I can't relate as much to the racial undercurrent in the story, but I don't want to understate it. It has to suck for Jason to feel constantly compared to the blonde haired blue eyed 'perfect sidekick'. She provides something seen as valuable and ideal that Jason never could. Coming from Steph's viewpoint (and considering canon) the idea of her being unattainable perfection is deeply funny, but it's very real to Jason. Adding in Tim - who's identical to Bruce and comes from the same social strata - makes Jason feel like it's every man for himself.

That's what makes his connection with Bruce even more important, though. He's the polar opposite of Bruce in every way, but although Tim and Bruce are similar in a lot of ways, Jason and Bruce have a deep connection and understanding that Tim and Steph don't. They're both dreamers who make the world a stage, their need for justice comes from a place of great pain, and they love in quiet ways.

Jason's a special kid. Like Steph, he has so much value that he doesn't see. Unlike her, he wants more - he's hungry for it, that life with meaning and kindness. He's finally attained something good, and he's scared of losing it. He has so much to offer that he can't see, and the happiness of the story is when he's seen.

New Wave was my way of giving a character who's been routinely fucked over by canon and sidelined by fandom the spotlight. She's special and perfect and loved and recognized and important because...she's none of those things 'in real life'. I wanted to give that to her. Steph's a character I related to when I was her age, and I wanted to give that to myself too.

Jason came from a similar place. I do think canon & fanon are like...overly obsessed with him lmfao. There's a billion 'Jason joins the manor' stories and it's why I almost didn't write the story lol. But he's rarely given the chance to be a kid, one who exists in his own right - to join the Batfam out of his own choice, which is something bizarrely rare in fic. And kids like Jason are the forgotten ones, and it will always be Jason's dream to show the forgotten children that they're as much Robin as he is.

Hey crazy thought but maybe Kairi wouldn’t seem like such a ‘wasted character’ if this fandom would quit taking everything of narrative and thematic significance about her and assigning it to Riku constantly all the time.

(The evaluation of the ways in which Kairi and Riku are important and vital foils for each other got kind of long so it’s under a read more; to be clear, I love Riku so much, and it makes me super mad to see his narrative also being undermined by this trend, this is not a hate post.)

Kairi and Riku serve opposing but complementary purposes in the narrative. Kairi represents light, but she also represents the stagnation of the light. Many characters who are associated with just light are also associated with stagnation and a resistance to change. Hoder and Eraqus are particularly extreme examples, but Aqua exemplifies this as well. They want a predictable world where things stay as they ‘should’ be and they are threatened by changes to the status quo. Eraqus in particular refuses to change anything about himself for 60 years, only taking on students at the last minute because he’s running out of time. Kairi, like Eraqus and Hoder and Aqua, stands as the bold, sharp light that casts others into shadow.

However, the other side of “resistance to change” means that Kairi represents restoration. She is able to restore Sora in KH1, pull them home in KH2, and hold Sora back from death itself in KH3, because her power is one of restoration. She holds so tightly to their old way of being that she can stop death itself in the interest of not changing too drastically. But she is unable to move forward on her own, because she fears change too much. She wants to chase after the boys when they keep leaving her behind…but she isn’t able to keep up, because what she actually wants is for them not to run at all. 

She wants to go home, and restore their previous status quo. This desire is consistent in her for the entire series; this is also why she is unable to let go of her childhood crush for Sora, even though he’s obviously not the person she wants him to be anymore. For Sora, Kairi is the rock, she is the home that will always be there, he feels that she is the secure dock he can always return to after the storm. He relies on her not changing, which reinforces her fear of change. Lea is similar, and they can bond in KH3 over both their mutual desires to restore a prior, idealized status quo where their friends were reliably there and not at risk of disappearing on them or running away from them or changing.

Riku on the other hand embodies transformation. He represents change to the status quo, growth and development and a new way to be. Too much change is as much of a problem as too little; Kairi in KH1 sees Riku wants change, and it scares her, and he does in fact go too far. At the same time, she’s the catalyst for Riku’s desire to change their circumstances. Kairi’s arrival at the islands in the meteor shower incites Riku to dream of going to the outside world. This too is a tension that creates an anxiety in Kairi - in a way, she can see herself as to blame for Riku’s desire to change. But Riku was always going to change, because that’s who he is. He is radical change, the change that cuts away restrictive dogma so that the world can advance. Riku drives Sora to also want to grow and change, to excel and challenge himself. Sora wants to be like Riku, whose strength and internal drive he admires.

Ultimately Kairi and Riku are in BALANCE with each other. Ironically, while Kairi is themed as ‘the sea,’ her narrative purpose is to be steady as the earth. Riku’s name is ‘the earth,’ but he is changing and dangerous as the sea. They are one another’s reflections in the narrative. Kairi’s arc is about learning to let go and move forward, even though it scares her. Riku’s entire arc is about finding balance, not throwing away the comfort of the past, that inoculates him from falling too far the way Baldr and Xehanort do. Riku can drive Kairi to join them by giving her a Keyblade too. Kairi can pull Riku back from fleeing from them by seeing him even under Ansem’s face. He is able to be in contrast with Kairi in a healthy way, in a way that honors her fears while also refusing stagnation. They have to work TOGETHER to find Sora, because they are one another’s narrative and thematic opposites. Kairi is too stagnant on her own, and Riku too volatile. Sora is the healthy middle between them, the center-point that can bind the light and the dark TOGETHER for one purpose. 

Kairi is narratively and thematically important to Kingdom Hearts. She represents something, and trying to take the things that reinforce her narrative importance to the story (her representation of the light, her narrative purpose of ‘disruption’ in her arrival via the meteor shower, her position as the one who grounds Sora in opposition to Riku’s position as the one who drives Sora to push himself and achieve more) not only undermines her story, it undermines Riku’s.
