really really funny to imagine post gulag when everyones actually introduced to price, soap is like "this is my sergeant roach he's so good and dedicated and reminds me a lot of somebody you know (wink wink) and we get along together so well in the field it's almost seamless. just like us in old times yeah???" absolutely desperate for approval. like full puppy dog eyes, shaking, half-hard, absolutely pathetic for his captain.

and then he gets a bit disgruntled (and lowkey disappointed) when price, instead, takes an immediate liking to ghost. he can sense the cptsd radiating off of him and he's like "oh i like that one" even though ghost's entire attitude toward him can be dumbed down to "Touch Me And I'll Kill You."

meanwhile this is the first time roach gets an idea of how pathetically obsessed soap is with price and has been using him as kinda a proxy for that obsession. like what soap feels for roach IS genuine, but he hasn't gotten over price (while he thought he was dead) and is a bit of a freak about it. like no one gets the treatment he does, the persistent guidance and hovering and constant praise and gentle criticism. he knew he was special to soap, but didn't realize the cause.

and price does like roach. he recognizes that he's extremely talented and is kinda a bit like a younger soap. but having spent the last 6 or so years in a russian gulag, he's a bit bored with him. ghost is an unknown and obviously more than a little fucked up. and roach, seeing that price is fucking insane, is extremely glad that he's spared of being the target of his attention.

ghost just wants to be left alone. he's been more of an outsider the 5 years he's been in the 141 and has been content with it, unable to put any trust in anyone. roach has been the closest, occasionally joining him on smoke breaks even though he doesn't smoke or bringing him a cup of tea or bringing him back a knife he had lost, newly sharpened. and he's been under the impression that soap just hates him but tolerates him because despite his constant complaints and nitpicking of everything ghost does, it's undeniable he's the best in the task force.

my thoughts on roach having a journal:

i think it’s a tattered thing that’s bursting at the seams. to me, roach is the kind of person who uses something to the point where it’s unrecognizable.

so for his journal, the bundle of pages is near completely separate from the cracked leather binding. and he doesn’t know how to fix it so he just wraps a rubber band over it twice over and tosses it in his bag. whenever he runs out of paper, he just stuffs more at the end. the pages in the beginning are yellowed from the dirt while the ends are usually a crisp white.

there’s an egregious use of post-its. either things that he remembers after the initial entry, doodles, or him wanting to provide smaller details that don’t really apply to the writings but still feels worthy of remembering. he likes to look at it from the side and see the vibrant pinks, greens, and yellows of the post-its throughout the journal.

he tried at first to keep it neat but he just gets too into the writing and suddenly his words are tipping downwards, out of line. his pencil has ripped through many pages because his emotions can get overwhelming, slaps a post-it right over that too. the ink always changes entry to entry and is slightly smudged.

unlike soap’s journal that’s filled with drawings, roach tapes things that he’s found into it. he likes how physical it is, likes running his fingers over the textures till the item softens and slightly loses form. when that happens, he tapes a big strip of transparent tape over it.

he just doesn’t really trust himself to catch all the details and that’s something so intensely important to him, so he’d rather steal a piece of that reality and keep it close.

On a different small animal note, I discovered we have some Big Buggies, aka adult dubias that got missed long enough to grow all the way up! So I finally got them upgraded from their little critter keeper into a 10g tank with better hides & some branches to climb.

There's at least 3 adult males, one very big female, and I think a few more females. I need to look up more info about when they start growing wings so you can be sure whether female or just juvenile still.

They weren't happy at being dug up & picked up, but they did seem to be exploring their new digs a bit before hiding! And I caught one kiddo checking out the new plate of food too.
