I know it's not technically a fairy tale, but do you happen to have any recs for retellings of Tam Lin?
--Siena
Unfortunately, no, since I haven't read any. However, I've heard good things about The Perilous Gard, which I believe draws from that fairy tale.
#answered asks#fairy tales#fairy tale retellings#tam lin#thewatercolours#i thought i had an answer for this#and it turns out i was thinking about my never-finished twelve dancing princesses retelling#where the soldier character was captured by the fairy king#and the eldest princess character frees him by invoking the tam lin clause#where as a member of the royal house#(the fairy king is her godfather)#she has the right to offer pardon to another member of the royal family#and the right to make someone a member of the royal family by marriage#but because he's a prisoner she'd have to prove her devotion to him by enduring the trials#so they know it's not just him trying to take advantage of her#it doesn't make a ton of sense but most of the book didn't either which is part of the reason i never finished#but anyway she agrees to the trial not knowing what it is only knowing she can't release him#and then she's horrified by him 'getting turned into' a bunch of increasingly ferocious animals#though in this universe fairy magic can't actually transform people so the magic's actually being done on her#to give extremely detailed all-five-senses hallucinations that this is what's happening#while the guy is magically silenced to stop him from breaking the illusion#and then when everything's over her soldier has no idea what she just had to endure but just knows it was traumatic#and that he had to watch her suffer it without being able to comfort her#but she wins the trial gets his freedom and everyone lives happily ever after#if i actually did anything with this story i prob wouldn't include this part because it's pretty tangential#but it's relevant to this tam lin discussion#*the fairy king is her grandfather not godfather#i'm not going back to retype all that

I know there’s a lot of debate about whether Malleus could ever actually be with someone like Yuu, considering he is a fae and prince, but the more I think about it the more it feels plausible. While there’s most likely never going to be any canon romances in the game, I think it’s an interesting discussion. Keep in mind this is just my opinion!
We know about the fae-human war that occurred in Briar Valley before Malleus was born (the one that Lilia fought in). Lilia has talked before about wanting there to be peace and understanding between humans and fae.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, what would be a better way to do this than uniting the two groups through a royal marriage between a human and a fae? Irl, this kind of marriage does have historical precedent. This union allows both parties to come together and witness specifically the ruler of their nation forgo any prejudice for the other group by sharing this deeply personal relationship.
Even though a lot of fae may look down upon humans and vice versa (probably similar attitudes to Sebek), if the King of Briar Valley were to marry a human, it would facilitate both political and social change amongst both groups. Families and relationships like Sebek’s parents (human-fae) would probably become much more common and socially-acceptable
Furthermore, the next royal heir would be of both fae and human descent, making them more appealing to both parties (aside from those who would remain prejudiced against half-fae like Sebek).
Lilia speaks of how a constant inability to compromise led to such conflict as the war. Marriage is pretty much the ultimate compromise to tie the two groups together. There will be incentive for both human and fae to support the royals of Briar Valley. The political change would hopefully be having everyone be allies, of this being the thing that makes them actually sit down and have political discussions instead of going straight to war. This would hopefully only facilitate more compromise and unity between the two factions, with them being able to support each other with resources and trade, for example.
The catch is that some of these benefits would likely only apply if the human Malleus married was chosen by the humans in Briar Valley who previously fought against the crown/fae. This is difficult because (as of now) we don’t have much knowledge of any such powerful (human) political opponent groups, or if they even exist after the war.
I think it would still generally be beneficial for him to marry a human (probably one of another kingdom I suppose is another solution). Marrying Yuu specifically may be difficult because of them being of ‘low-birth’ in the eyes of snobbish royals (it seems like Briar Valley is still a feudalist society) and being magicless, but I’m not sure those things are deal breakers.
Another problem that arises is the difference in lifespan, but (and this might be cope) but I like to think the Draconia family would have access to something that would make extending an otherwise healthy person’s life possible (whether magic, magical artifacts, etc.).
I honestly doubt Malleus’ grandmother would really deny him the choice of who he marries after everything that’s happened in his life. Also just like…realistically, who’s going to stop him? Malleus will be King and he also has his magic to back him up, so it’s not like any advisors can say no and his grandmother doesn’t have any other family members so she can’t threaten to disinherit him.
Plus, I don’t think there’s evidence to say that he would necessarily be forced to have a very specifically arranged marriage with any other kingdoms right now. I doubt Malleus is down to marry any of the other powerful royals or families (Leona, Kalim, etc.).
So it’s not really like he’s necessarily making a fatal mistake in ruling by not gaining an essential alliance through marriage. Sure, he probably couldn’t marry just anyone, but I think there is a case to be made for him marrying a human (and perhaps Yuu in some alternate timeline where twst is a dating sim).

1000th Post - My Prince
Your kingdom had been at battle for ten years now, starting when you were but a child, you didn't know why or how it started, but the war with the neighbouring kingdom had been long and bloody. The enemy had cut swathes of land apart until they were finally at your door.
A general entered the throne room, where you stood as the last member of the royal family left in the kingdom. Your mother had fled to her home nation, your father cut down in battle, sisters had gone with marriages elsewhere or with your mother.
You, the crown prince, remained. You held your head high as you were surrounded by the filthy animals that had taken your land.
These wolf warriors, as they were known in their own kingdom, with their foul Lupine Lord were not justified in what they did, in battling your people over false claims.
You snarled and snapped when they came too close, but otherwise didn't move. You were their captive already, they had no right to touch you.
Then, their King entered. They all fell onto one knee as he swept into the room.
His dark eyes drank you in, and he approached you without fear, markings along his face indicative of his fur markings when he transformed. It was an unsightly thought, that a man could shift his skin into that of an animal's.
He showed no fear as he drew close to you, taking hold of your face in one of his large, calloused hands. You thrashed and tried to hit him, but he took hold of your hand when you tried to strike him.
"You will be my bride, and we will end this war now. No more blood need be shed because your people are pelt hunters." He commanded. You felt your blood drain from your face. Forced marriage? Yes, it would save your people, but you didn't want to be his bed warmer...
He growled lowly, and you felt yourself whine in response, his hand tightening around your throat.
"We will be married now, in the way of my people, meaning you'll be bound to me. We will have a public ceremony later." He instructed, and the warriors and generals around you whistled and hooted in their lewd, filthy joy as their king pushed you towards the throne, your father's throne, the throne that would have been yours.
They'd all watch as he took your virginity right there. You kicked as he tugged at your trousers, exposing your cunt to the cool air of the room.
The watchers howled with excitement. The king grinned wolfishly, not having known you were able to bear his children. He wouldn't even need to make the effort to prep you. You thrashed in his grip as he gripped your hair and bent you over the arm of the throne, your hands gripping at the other arm to prevent your face being smashed against the wood as he began to rub at your cocklet, the sensation of pleasure making you gasp and arch up instinctively, not expecting such a feeling to be caused by someone else. It felt different to when you rubbed yourself in the darkest hours of the night.
He then brushed something large and hot against your thigh, smearing wetness against you as you began to fight again.
Then, his thick, hot cockhead pressed into your untouched cunt, sheathing every last inch into you without waiting for your body to adjust to the invasion. You cried out as the tip kissed something deep inside of you, and as the king began to move inside of you, leaning down to huff against your throat.
"You're so fucking tight, my prince. You're going to bear me a whole litter of pups, and you're going to love it. I can tell already, your cunt is so desperate that you're dripping with need already." He taunted, before humping into you roughly, the soldiers jeering, some of them rubbing their cocks as they watched you.
The sounds being forced out of your slutty body embarrassed you, because you sounded so desperate for the way the king was using you. He was pressing against everything inside of you, and your traitorous body was loving it. You could feel something building inside of you as he continued drilling you.
Something began to swell at the base of his cock when it pressed into your cunt. Your eyes went wide as you realised the rumours that their cocks were wolfish... were entirely true. And you were going to hang off of his knot like a common bitch.
You began to fight again, trying to break free, which just made him moan and growl against you, and his cock throb and feel bigger as he pounded you harder.
"That's it, fight back, makes you go so tight on my cock." He taunted, before something inside of you gave way, and your whole body tightened up as you came on his thick, invading cock, which in turn caused his knot to be pressed deep inside of you and swell up, locking his cock inside of you, the tip pressed against something deep within - your cervix - as he began to pump you full of his thick, hot cum, spurt after spurt of his potent seed ensuring that you'd bear his heirs.
The kingdom was taken.

crown prince! bang chan x reader, fluff, royal au | m.list
wc: 1.1k words
a/n: dipping my toes into writing something a little out of my comfort zone! this is also lightly (heavily lmao) inspired by one of my fave games fe3h and it's support conversations.. 👉👈
you had no idea what chan might’ve wanted from you when he had invited you out for a cup of tea on the courtyard. it was unlike him to host such frivolous activities like tea parties out of the blue since he was quite busy these days, dealing with his royal duties and what not.
you haven't really crossed paths with him since your academy days and even now, you only ever caught glimpses of him here and there because of your parents' business involving relation matters, so the sudden invitation came as a surprise.
the said academy was for royals and nobles alike, shaping them up to be the future leaders for the next generation. it was how you both came to know each other. chan is the crown prince of the kingdom up in the frigid north, revered to be one of the strongest knights the kingdom has ever seen. polite, charming, not to mention extremely good looking as well.
you however, is just the eldest child of your family. house l/n had strong ties with the kingdom, your parents being close with several affluent families and being valuable members of the kingdom’s council.
"here we are." felix, his right hand man and closest friend, had stopped in front of the cobbled steps, leading down to the beautiful courtyard before sending you a grin. you thank him earnestly, giving him a smile back.
from a distance, you could see chan sitting quietly in the meadows, the lush grass and flowers crowding at his feet, cupping his chin in thought as the wind lightly blows through his hair.
he looks serene compared to the stressed look he adorns whenever you see him hunched over the castle’s conference room, going over his army’s battle tactics.
you bowed upon reaching his presence, the sunlight illuminating his handsome face. “thank you for inviting me, your highness.” chan stands right up, a slight shock on his face before swiftly recovering.
"i told you before, y/n. there's no need for formalities, just chan is fine." he sends you a warm smile and pulls out a chair for you.
the spread before you was amazing. tons of decadent pastries and cookies were laid in a dessert tier, making your mouth water in anticipation.
“please, help yourself to some tea.” he takes the beautifully painted porcelain pot, pouring some of the aromatic tea in your cup. the steam from it flows up to the air, filling the table in it's light and refreshing scent. the atmosphere starts to dwindle into quietness, the breeze and wildlife surrounding you filling in it's silence.
"...was there something you'd like to talk about?" you cock your head to the side. he looks a little flustered, but ultimately nods.
"-yes, actually." chan sighs out while he traces the rim of his tea cup, evading your curious eyes.
"did...your parents ever bother you about marriages?" he slowly manages to get out, stumbling through the sentence.
the tea cup you held in your hand freezes in place. now that he had mentioned it, your father and mother always brought up the idea of marrying. they were always pestering you, wondering when their only child was going to settle down. they stopped one day however, just like that. you wondered if your years of rejecting the idea itself had worked or they simply got tired. but you wondered what brought this on? were his parents arranging him with someone?
"forgive me, i do not mean to be so straight forward." chan coughs into his hand, noticing the lack of reply and turned his head away in slight embarrassment.
"it's alright." you place your cup down on its saucer, secretly admiring how the tips of his ears redden so quickly. "but now that you've brought it up, yes i have."
"i see," the tea was abandoned now, left to cool in the summer shade. “i’ve heard my father speak about an arranged engagement for me a few years ago.”
you politely nod, urging him to continue. now you’re curiosity is piqued. although, you’re not entirely sure why he had come to talk to you about this, plenty of your shared friends and acquaintances had gotten proposals and arrangements.
“that was back then, however. my father got tired of me refusing to settle down and dropped it all together." you rest your chin on your palm, his words strikingly familiar.
“he never told me the specifics but i’m pretty sure he was talking about you.”
something between a choke and a sputter left your lips, “what?”
“it’s true.” he says it as if it wasn’t earth shattering news for you. "father wanted me to marry the heir to house l/n."
you could only gape at him akin to a fish, not knowing how to digest the information given to you.
"truthfully, i didn't know you well back then, that's why i declined." chan shifts in his seat, unfolding his legs and turning fully to you. so that was why they had stopped. "but i would have been happy to accept it now, if i had known it was you.”
an intense heat started to creep up your neck upon his confession, a rosy hue dusting your cheeks and tinting your ears impossibly red.
“you mean-” chan nods at your conclusion and smiles, his eyes crinkling in amusement. he would have accepted?
“i don’t think we would have been close if we were married.” you say whilst scooping up a spoonful of cake, distracting yourself from the violent wave of emotions you felt. it was contradictory, but chan seemed to hum in agreement.
“i think you’re right. i’m glad we met this way though.”he sucks in a breath- a cute habit of his that you have observed even back then.
chan then asks you in a soft voice, staring deep into your eyes. “we can start over if you’d like.”
“i’d like to get to know you.”
you lean your elbows on the table, the wind flowing gracefully through your hair as you muster out a grin. "i would like that."
the rest of the afternoon was spent comfortably in each other’s presence, finally eating the sweets laid before you two while catching up.
“t’was such a pleasure.” chan offered his hand for you to hold when it was time to retire back inside, placing a chaste kiss on the ridge of your knuckles.
“my, my. you flatter me.” you chuckle, covering your mouth.
from the corner of your vision, you could faintly make out felix in the grassy meadow, sitting down in what seems to be his own table and sipping his own tea. he sends a cheery thumbs up upon seeing you and chan glance at him. chan’s face reddens, hiding sheepishly in his hands as you laugh.

rating: explicit
member: jungwon
notes: fem!reader, reader is a couple years older than him, acquaintances to lovers, medieval/renaissance (?) royalty au (i made the time period as vague as possible so anywhere from the 1500s to 1700s should be fine i guess), talks of marriage, loss of virginity, unprotected sex
a/n: IMPORTANT! i was hesitant to put this out at first because i know there's tension when it comes to explicit content regarding jungwon, but i didn't make this out to be anything too crazy, so no hard/taboo kinks as i don't feel quite okay writing those for him as of now. i did enjoy writing this piece as i'm a history buff and love the drama. of royal courts so,,,please enjoy!
Tumblr media
it was getting too much.
the stares, the "innocent" touches, the silences that followed each strained conversation.
you had been patient. you had been steadfast. you had stood your ground.
but the flicker of desire inside you was slowly catching on, and you know, it would soon be roaring fiercely despite your efforts to tamp it down.
you gather your skirts and trudge on out of the library, knowing the princess would be looking for you, given the length of time you've been away. the hallway is quiet, as you expected. the end of supper time is drawing near, and everyone in the castle would soon retire to their private chambers.
the princess was dining with her family in her father's royal suite, along with a handful of courtiers and ladies-in-waiting, much like yourself. you had excused yourself for a moment under the guise that you were in need of the privy, but in truth, you could not bear to be in the room with him any longer.
he'd been staring, longer than he should be, and you were afraid that someone would take notice.
you had stood behind the princess, curtsying briefly before asking to take your leave. she waved you off without a second thought, though you did not miss the questioning glint in her eye as she did so.
you caught his gaze briefly just before you left.
prince jungwon had smiled in your direction, seemingly amused at your flustered state.
you suddenly blank as you turn a corner, your shoulder colliding with something, causing you to stumble backward. you reach out instinctively to steady yourself, just as a hand grabs you by the arm.
"my lady," a voice croons in your ear, and you feel your dinner churning inside you.
you straighten yourself out, smoothing down the wrinkles in your dress as you look jungwon in the eye.
"your grace," you begin. "i was just on the way back to supper."
"no need," jungwon informs with a tilt of his head. "supper has ended. my sister does seem to want to know where you've wandered off to, though."
you swallow thickly. "i will return to her chambers right away."
you bow, hoping he would drop the conversation, but you feel his hand lay gently on your shoulder. you freeze, acutely aware that no man who isn't your lover or husband should be touching you like this in public.
"i'm sure she would not mind if you stayed out a little longer?" jungwon says as you fiddle with the lace trim on your bodice.
"doing what, your grace?" you question, turning back to look at him.
jungwon smiles, his dimples prominent in the firelit hall.
"take a walk with me," jungwon offers.
"if she asks where you've been, you can always say you were with me."
you draw in a breath. "i don't think that would be wise."
"my sister has five other ladies-in-waiting to attend to her. one would not be amiss," jungwon tries to convince you, taking your hand in his.
"what i meant was, it would not be appropriate to be left alone with you," you protest, watching as he lifts your hand to his lips, brushing them gently over your knuckles.
your skin tingles with a feeling you can't quite place.
"and why not?" jungwon asks, running his thumb over the spot where he had kissed your hand.
you look into his large, cat-like eyes. you're bewildered at how dashing he looks in this proximity, the sharp line of his nose exaggerated by the shadows cast by the torches around you. his lips curve into another one of his handsome smiles, and the way he looks at you is more than enough cause for you to shake inwardly with want.
"you know why," you finally answer. "it is not proper."
jungwon cocks his head to the side as if waiting for you to continue.
"we're not betrothed, or known lovers, for that matter. the direction we're heading..."
you pause, hoping jungwon would understand what you're talking about.
"it's dangerous."
"do you not hold any affection for me, lady ______?" jungwon addresses you formally, perhaps a jest, given the smirk playing on his lips.
"i had thought you did," jungwon continues, reaching out to toy with a loose strand of your hair that seemed to have fallen from the intricate braids that decorate your head.
"why would you think that?" you challenge. your heart beats twice as fast now.
the flicker of flames begins to crackle.
"you do not throw yourself at me like the other ladies in this castle do," jungwon replies, his thumb ghosting over your cheek and down your jaw.
"you avoid me, make any excuse to separate yourself from me," jungwon goes on.
"but when you do find yourself in my presence, your eyes cannot seem to leave mine."
you inhale sharply.
it's true. much like earlier, you make such efforts to create as much distance as possible between you and jungwon. like a fox slinking away from its predator.
but to you, jungwon was like a city cat: sly and clever. despite the couple of years you had on him, he was always one step ahead. you could never escape him. it didn't matter how grand his family's castle was, you will always find your way to each other.
"do you hold any affection for me, your grace?" you ask, raising a brow.
jungwon chuckles at this.
"of course."
your eyes widen at his admission and a laugh escapes the prince's lips.
"you thought i would shy away from such a confession?" jungwon taunts, stepping closer, his hands resting on your waist.
the fire burns brighter, still.
jungwon leans in and panic fills you. you were not in one of the castle's secluded corners where shadows are ready to conceal whatever is to come next. anyone could walk by and find you and the prince in this compromising position.
but all is forgotten when jungwon presses his lips against yours, gentle and cautious, as if wary that he might scare you off.
as a lady of a respectable background, you have always been reminded by your family to keep your virtue with you. you are not to mess with boys and no such inappropriate behavior shall be tolerated from you.
as a lady of a respectable background, you had your way around this.
this is not the first time you've been kissed, but the weak peck of lips against your own when you were but a young girl was nothing compared to the way jungwon's lips seems to be melting against yours.
you pull jungwon closer by the front of his tunic, feeling the firm muscles shifting beneath.
"we mustn't," you protest weakly against his lips. "not here."
jungwon pulls away, breathing heavily, eyes dark as he gazes at you. you stare back at him, anticipation coursing through your body.
what now?
"to my chambers," jungwon whispers, grasping your hand in his. you start to protest as he pulls you along, but he shushes you.
"quickly," jungwon urges, dashing down the hallway towards his room.
luckily for both of you, your destination had been nearby, and no guards are on patrol on this side of the castle. you arrive in front of the heavy double doors of jungwon's room, both of you out of breath and brimming with feelings you did not care to address.
jungwon pushes you against the hard wooden doors, lips pressing up against yours once more. you let out a surprised sound, but it's caught in your throat when you feel jungwon's hand running down the side of your leg. he dips down, grabbing the back of your knee, before hooking your leg around his waist.
you gasp, feeling him press up against you. you feel something hard beneath his breeches.
the flames are catching on, moving up farther and farther.
"your grace," you start, increasingly worried that someone would see you.
"forgive me," jungwon says with a sheepish grin. "restraint is hard to come by when you're around."
you flush at his words, but before you can reply, jungwon turns the knob to one side of the door, hurriedly pushing you inside before letting it close behind him. he turns the lock in place and lets the second steel bar fall across the wood, ensuring the utmost privacy for the two of you.
"your grace," you begin once more.
"jungwon," he says pointedly. "you may call me by my given name."
you gulp, the situation finally catching up to you. "jungwon."
"i...i do not wish to give myself to someone i will not marry," you explain, holding jungwon at arm's length. he examines your face, gently brushing your hair away from your forehead.
"we won't do anything you don't want to," jungwon reassures, placing a kiss on your forehead.
"but that's precisely it," you say, circling your arms around jungwon's neck.
"i want to do everything," you whisper.
"i want to do everything with you."
jungwon raisies an eyebrow, a grin tugging at his lips.
"are you the one proposing to me, my lady?" jungwon teases, his hand pressing gently on your lower abdomen. he travels down further between your legs, rubbing you through your gown.
you sigh, clutching at jungwon's clothes. you lean forward to leave a trail of kisses down his neck, enjoying the way he groans softly.
"is there any other woman you wish to marry?" you ask, smiling against his neck.
"no," jungwon answers simply, taking you by surprise as he pushes you towards his perfectly made-up bed, plush with the finest covers and blankets.
you stumble backward onto the cushiony surface, propping yourself up on your elbows as you watch jungwon undo the strings of his breeches. you gasp as he lets them fall, exposing all of his lower body to you.
jungwon catches your eye and leans down, kissing you with newfound vigor.
the fire crackles, just shy of bursting into wild flames.
"we can stop," jungwon murmurs as he pulls away. "whatever you want, my love, i will follow."
you shiver at the endearment, your fingers gently threading through jungwon's hair. with your other hand, you reach down to gather your skirt around your waist.
"i want you," you whisper, kissing jungwon sweetly.
you lay back down on the mattress, watching as jungwon eyes your exposed core with undeniable lust. jungwon bites his lip, guiding his straining length to your entrance. you feel a mild burn as he pushes in, the wet squelch of your arousal reaching your ears as he slips further into you.
you have had a man down there before, but merely with his fingers. the thickness of jungwon's cock contrasts with anything you've felt before, stretching you painfully, but you urge yourself to persist, clawing at jungwon's sleeves.
"my love, my dear," jungwon says, stilling over you.
"wait," you plead. "just, wait."
jungwon kisses you tenderly, stroking one side of your face with his thumb, perhaps in an effort to soothe you. you take increasingly deeper breaths, letting yourself relax in jungwon's embrace.
jungwon gives an experimental thrust, barely there, and you groan, but at this moment, the pain is mixed with a feeling that has you curling your toes.
"again," you pant, looking directly at jungwon's eyes. "slowly, my love."
jungwon moves again, carefully watching your expression. you gasp, lips parting as the sting gives way to a delicious throb within you.
"more," you beg this time. "please, i need to feel you."
jungwon groans, his hips snapping up as he gives in to his instincts.
"oh!" you cry out as the sensations come crashing down on you at once. it feels good, much better than your own fingers or anyone else's. you watch as he disappears and reappears with each thrust, the image so lewd and new to you that it keeps you in a trance.
"look at me, ______," jungwon says lowly. you obey, peering up at the young man. he has a frenzied look in his eyes, wild with something burning inside him.
the flames roar, engulfing you, him, your bodies.
jungwon grabs your hips, forcing you further down his bed. you throw your head back, relishing in the way he seems to go even deeper. you lock your legs around him, never wanting this feeling to end.
the bed creaks with the effort of holding up your passionate lovemaking, and you worry for a fraction of a second if anyone can hear. as if reading your thoughts, jungwon places a lingering kiss on your forehead.
"i think...i plan to marry you within the year," jungwon supplies between labored breaths. "hell, before the next moon if father allows."
you giggle, elated at jungwon's words.
"hardly a choice now that i've given my maidenhood to you," you comment mischievously. one side of jungwon's mouth raises in a smirk before he dives down to latch at one side of your neck.
"you're mine, love," jungwon declares. "all mine."
you preen at his words, his pace picking up. you're left breathless as he thrusts madly in and out of you. your world is spinning but at the very center of it is jungwon. sweet, handsome jungwon.
"i'm about to—"
"inside," you blurt out without second thought. jungwon's mouth hangs open at your decision, a question evidently making its way out of him.
"you'll get it on my dress, otherwise, and that would raise more questions," you interrupt once more, your breath hitching as jungwon's nails dig into your side.
"by the gods," jungwon curses beneath his breath. "i might have to wed you within a fortnight."
"please," you mewl. "want nothing more than to be your wife, to be yours."
jungwon grunts, pressing a hand down on your abdomen. you yelp, feeling a sudden pressure inside you. it had been a slow thrum of something minutes before, but now a strange sensation grips at you from within.
"s-something's happening," you worry, grasping jungwon's shoulder.
"you're about to finish, my love," jungwon says, pressing down even harder on your belly. you writhe, feeling as if you're about to explode.
"it'll feel good, i promise," jungwon reassures, pressing his lips to your temple. his movements are turning erratic, sweat dripping down his forehead with effort.
"fuck, i'm—"
before jungwon can finish his sentence, he moans loudly in your ear, sinking fully to the hilt inside of you. you feel him spasm inside you and the movement brushes against a spot that has you coming undone, pleasure coursing through every vein in your body.
you cling onto each other, trembling and moaning each other's names.
a minute passes by as you both calm down, skin glistening in the dim light of the dying flames in the fireplace. jungwon is the first to pull away, watching you as you try to catch your breath.
"you look absolutely stunning, my love," jungwon praises, kissing you on the cheek.
you smile, the ache in your body starting to make itself known.
"let me call one of the servants to have a bath drawn for you," jungwon offers, reaching over to the row of service bells next to his bed.
you sit up, letting your gown fall over your legs, concealing any indication of the past hour.
"i think i should be the one to call for them from my own room," you suggest, pulling jungwon back. you snake your arms around his torso, kissing him behind his ear.
"they might grow suspicious," you add, laying your cheek against his firm back.
"very well, then," jungwon agrees, prying himself from your arms. he swiftly dresses, straightening his disheveled hair. he sees you watching and he smiles, taking your face in his and giving you what seemed to be the hundredth kiss that night.
"i suppose you don't want me walking you to your room, either?" jungwon asks, helping you up from his bed.
you shake your head, working out the creases in your skirt and sleeves.
"let's not push our luck, my prince," you warn, patting jungwon's cheek.

you enter your bedroom, exhausted and slightly worried. you tried to find the princess to provide a semblance of an explanation but she was nowhere to be found. not in her own chambers, not in the library, not in the parlor. you decided after nearly half an hour of looking that you would handle the situation tomorrow.
you slide the large metal lock of your bedroom door into place, securing you in your bedroom for now. you turn, nearly screaming at the figure standing before you.
"gods!" you shriek, backing into the door, painfully banging your head against the wood.
"oh, shut it," the princess says, pulling you away from the door. she maneuvers you toward your quaint sitting corner, pulling a chair back and urging you to take a seat.
"now," she begins. "i'm not mad. i'm thrilled, to be honest."
"have you worked out a wedding date with my brother, yet?"

Chapter 4
Jongho wished you didn’t come back home.
He knows it sounds harsh but he felt it would have been better for everyone. He had only heard about you from San, the Prince could not stop talking about you. And after you left, every time San was slightly intoxicated after a night of drinking with Wooyoung, he would giggle and mumble your name as he stumbled into his bed and regale Jongho about how captivating your beauty and charm was.
It was clear that you left a void in San’s life that not even alcohol could fill. Jongho deduced it was because of you, San turned to causing mischief and breaking the rules whenever he could, so that he could occupy his time and forget about you just for a moment. But it was a temporary solution, and the longing of seeing you again would return to San after the adrenaline wore off.
While Jongho was aware Seonghwa was also close to you at one point, he didn’t expect his eldest brother to also harbour intimate feelings for you, the kind that brought the idea of marriage into the picture. Maybe it was biased on his part, but he always thought Seonghwa would marry a Princess of a neighbouring kingdom or someone of high status as expected of him due to his place in line for the throne. The eldest had always been known to follow traditions and rules.
But now as he put the pieces together and recalled that night of the royal betrothals, Jongho realised Seonghwa’s underlying affection for you.
And it’s circled back to the same conclusion every time – it was because of you all this happened.
Seonghwa has sought permission to marry you and now San is holed up in his room refusing to meet anyone. And to make matters worse, their mothers are at each other’s throats.
The next family dinner is going to be extremely awkward.
After meeting Seonghwa and Hongjoong, Jongho decided to take a walk to the lake that was right outside the palace’s perimeter. It was his favourite place in the whole kingdom and usually, Jongho would have to sneak out after most of the palace was asleep. But tonight, since everyone had more pressing matters to attend to, Jongho slipped out through the back entrance in the kitchen after secretly confiscating two cheese puffs from a tray.
While the palace was caught up in a whirlwind of frenetic chaos, the gentle moonlight that illuminated the pathway gave a caressing and soothing feeling. Looking back, the castle looked enchanting in the moonlight’s glow. And as Jongho came closer to the vast lake, the enchanting reflection of the moonlight bathed the neighbouring trees and vegetation in a soft glow.
However, Jongho did not expect someone else to be there at this hour, and even more surprising, he did not expect it to be you. He stopped in his tracks and looked at you. You stood by the edge of the lakebed, tossing stones that rippled through the still waters disrupting its tranquillity.
Jongho contemplated his next course of action. It was either retreat to the palace or come face to face with you. The former didn’t sound pleasing, so without much thought, Jongho walked towards your direction.
Hearing footsteps approach you, you look up on-guard before relaxing, recognizing it’s Prince Jongho. You internally grimace though, because right now was definitely not the best time to encounter a royal family member.
After the King left and your Father more than happily agreed to the proposal, your Mother scolded your Father for rushing into something that should be discussed personally and privately with family first. While your Father argued that there was nothing to discuss because it’s a clear and wonderful opportunity, your Mother chided your Father for not considering what you wanted and your thoughts on the matter. She tried to reason with him that you had a life of your own and a career that brought you happiness and took you everywhere, but your Father simply dismissed her citing that you will give up dancing and focus on being a consort to the Prince.
Hoshi was ready to knock your Father out and your siblings stood there in shock at your Father’s words. While you, tired and exhausted from everything that happened in one day, simply approached both your parents, glared at your Father with teary eyes before rushing out the door. But before you left, you turned to your Father and asked brokenly, “Do you care about me or do you care about the King’s approval more?”
You ran out before he could answer and dodged every person who tried to talk to you and gain your attention. After walking around aimlessly and as nightfall began, you stepped out of the village’s perimeter and headed towards the lake, to spend some time in solitude.
But now, you were face to face with Prince Jongho. You bowed your head in respect and he nodded.
“It’s a lovely evening.” he commented, staring up at the night sky littered with stars.
You hummed in response, not entirely sure you wanted to start a conversation. Definitely the entire royal family knew? You’re not sure how well the news was received.
“So my brother wants to marry you?”
There it was. Prince Jongho ripped the bandage right off. And either this conversation could go decently or terribly.
“Apparently so.” you answered respectfully.
You really did not want to make a Prince mad right now. If anything, you desperately hoped this conversation would fizzle out soon enough. While your Father may expect you to marry Prince Seonghwa, you would be leaving the next Wednesday before daybreak no matter what. This meant you would have to stay out of trouble and out of sight until then.
Therefore, arguing and disrespecting a Prince is out of the question, and you need to exclude yourself as soon as possible.
“It was quite a surprise,” Jongho continues, “Nobody expected that Seonghwa would do so. Maybe San would…”
You side eye the Prince whose focus is on the lake. You know Prince Jongho is Prince San’s biological younger brother but he is also Seonghwa’s brother as well. You’re unsure and uncertain about Prince San’s actions. Prince San threw the veil on you – most likely as a joke – but the significance of a red veil is a serious matter, one that Prince San is aware of. You would like to believe that as mischievous as Prince San is, he wouldn’t go that far. Meanwhile, Prince Seonghwa has sought your hand in marriage.
Unclear about how to respond, you don’t, you continue staring out towards the lake with folded arms. Prince Jongho turns you with his hands behind his back and analyses your state.
“What are you going to do?” he asks.
“I don’t plan on marrying Prince Seonghwa,” you answer honestly but respectfully as you can, “Forgive me for saying it like that but, my life entails freedom, I love travelling and performing and I would like to continue to do so until I’m ready to settle down.”
“Did you tell my Father that?”
“You know I would not. I’m hoping to talk to Prince Seonghwa tomorrow to resolve the matter.”
“I don’t think it might go as you would want it to. My brother seems to like you and my Father, when he gives his seal of approval, he makes sure and sees that it goes through.”
“As much as I respect the King, this is my life also. I cannot give that up just because everyone around me has decided that this would be good for me. On the outside, marrying into royalty sounds like a fairytale but I’ve seen my cousin have a hard time learning simply the basic royal etiquette because the rules and customs and expectations are so absurd. And my cousin did everything right only to still get scolded by the teacher because of something so minor. It’s ridiculous honestly, and that’s not a life I want to live.”
“But you’ll be with Prince Seonghwa, that’s every girl’s dream. You’ll be second in line to the throne. Doesn’t that sound pleasing?”
“No,” you blankly stated, “I don’t care about ruling a kingdom and I would rather marry someone I truly love rather than out of an arrangement.”
Prince Jongho looks at you and you stare back bravely.
“You know Prince Seonghwa better than me, Your Highness, I’m sure he’s wonderful but, I don’t know him and our lives are different. At the end of the day, I need to make a decision that’s right for my life, and if that means rejecting Prince Seonghwa then so be it.”
Jongho was surprised at your response. Initially, he thought you would jump at the prospect sooner or later of marrying Seonghwa. Who wouldn’t? But hearing the resolution in your voice, he was in awe at your bravery and stance. You were also rejecting the King’s declaration as well, something that might not go over well tomorrow.
Jongho knew his Father never gave in easily to things. Quite frankly, his Father did not care about anything except drinking and merriment. So most of the time, he would say no or let royal events like the betrothals make the decisions and he’ll just sign off on it. But for him to agree to Seonghwa’s request and personally make the trip to let it be known, meant that there was something he knew or…wanted. He only did things when it would benefit him.
It was this moment Jongho realised the tough position you’re in, something that you did not know yet. And it was at this moment, Jongho felt for you. Moving his hands, he revealed the two cheese puffs that were in the clear bag. He offered one to you as a peace offering which you cautiously but gratefully took.
Jongho sighed internally because he knew things were about to become messy. As he munched on the cheese puff, he exchanged words with you here and there. As he got to know you a little more, he noticed why his brothers liked you. You had a calm presence and lively demeanour that added life to the conversation. You regaled him albeit cautiously, about little playful tricks you learnt and folklore you believed in. You were reserved but you didn’t leave Jongho hanging and engaged with him whenever he asked a question.
As the night wore on, the two of you tossed pebbles into the lake and Jongho smiled and softly laughed as you respectfully teased him that you were winning.
He was so focused solely on your interaction, Jongho did not register the electric feeling that coursed through his veins and the somersaults his heart was doing as he continued conversing with you.
But he did recognize that little revelation creeping in and he welcomed it warmly this time.
He was glad you decided to come back home.

~*~
After I Met You
by Amandyalmonds
M, WIP, 78k, Wangxian
Summary: "They’re not going to go through with the marriage proposal though, right?” Jiang Cheng reasoned. “You’re ours. And surely the Lan sect wouldn’t want a huli jing, let alone the famed Hanguang-jun.” “Exactly," Wei Wuxian said with a grin. "The Lans are too stuck up to know how to handle someone like me, and they won’t risk forcing their precious Hanguang-jun into such a marriage.” Or, after the end of the war, Wei Wuxian is offered as the last known huli jing to marry into the Lan royal family. The only problem is that Wei Wuxian has never met the man he's marrying, and he's not sure he'll survive in a palace with over three-thousand rules.
~*~
it rains, it pours
by jublis
Not rated, 130k, Wangxian
Summary: Wei Wuxian dashes across the distance that separates him from his husband, like a child running through the dark as if that would lessen its existence. He grabs Lan Zhan’s hand and holds the arm close to his side, to a soft breath of laughter. “Come on, Hanguang-jun,” he half-whispers, because the atmosphere seems to call for it. “Light the way for us.” (Wei Wuxian has scarcely known fear to be gentle — and still. It's as if there’s something murmuring down the hallway, behind the closed door, next to the window in this howling storm: I’m here, I’m here, I’ve always been here…) Or, as Wei Wuxian starts to look into the reasons behind the unsettling notion that something is not quite right, something else starts to look back.

Take My Pieces, Make Me Whole
by InTheGreySpaces (@inthegreyspaces)
M, WIP, 203k, Wangxian
Summary: Lan Wangji reunites with Wei Wuxian in Yiling only to discover that their union in Xuanwu's Cave nearly three years ago had an outcome he never could have anticipated. Instead of leaving the Burial Mounds that evening, Lan Wangji stays, and his actions set in motion a series of events that will save Wei Wuxian and the Wens. But first, he must battle Wei Wuxian's own lack of self-worth, the clutching hold the resentful dead are determined to keep on their champion, the greed of Jin Guangshan, Jin Guangyao's machinations, his own Uncle's unbending disapproval, and the hatred of the Cultivation World. However, friends and allies are found in the least likeliest of places, and eventually, there is a light at the end of the single-log bridge.

The Housewife's Guide to Causing Chaos
by dvasva (@dvasva)
M, WIP, 127k, Wangxian | Kay's Rec
Summary: “Of all the rotten luck I could have!" Outside, in between the gentle embrace of an imposing misty mountain and the caress of soft wind, stood the Cloud Recesses. It wasn’t a section that Wei Wuxian had recognized from his time in the sect, but the motifs of clouds and cranes in the buildings, the impeccable feng shui and carefully manicured paths, and the utter silence as the sect members slept peacefully, all burned themselves into Wei Wuxian’s eyes. No wonder the curtains were so firmly nailed to the walls! Any bit of demonic energy escaping the room could call down a veritable army of righteous cultivators! What sort of person in their right mind would dare to summon a spirit into their own body using resentful energy in the Cloud Recesses of all places? What kind of person would scoff so rudely at the Lan Clans most important rule, ‘Do not fraternize with evil?’ After being dead for four years, Wei Wuxian wakes up in a body he doesn't really feel comfortable with, in a place that he's sure wants him dead, and married to a man who surely hates him.
~*~
A Hop, Skip, and a Jump
by Prince_Enby (@enbiart)
T, WIP, 47k, Wangxian & LSZ/OYZZ
Summary: Two years after the events of Guanyin Temple, the Junior Quartet unknowingly walk into an array during a night hunt, and walk out into the middle of a war. None of them are even slightly prepared to deal with the opportunity dropped into their laps - and yet, despite it all, Ouyang Zizhen's biggest concern is somehow still the fact that everyone thinks he and Lan Sizhui are married.
~*~
fans for hanguang-jun
by saltyfeathers
M, 21k, Wangxian
Summary: “What I mean,” Wei Wuxian repeats with as much gravitas as he can muster, “is that every single day in their marriage bed, the Yiling Laozu sp—spears open the most esteemed Hanguang-jun on his—his mmmmmmonster cock!!!” wei wuxian gets kidnapped by a team of belligerent bottoms.
~*~

by loosingletters (@loosingmoreletters)
E, 2k, MXY/WWX/XY
Summary: Mo Xuanyu raises his head from Wei Wuxian’s shoulder to mouth at the exposed skin at his neck, leaving bruises and red stains from his lip balm. He forewent the white foundation today; it is more of a hassle in bed than an enhancement, and he carefully avoids the delicately painted huadian from smearing. Wei Wuxian exhales, not quite a moan yet, and Mo Xuanyu grins against his skin before biting down. The Yiling Laozu is a kind master, sweet to his heir and family, but he is not a gentle man. His breathing hitches at the sudden pain, an approval on its own. Or, Mo Xuanyu pays special attention to his sect leader and shixiong.
~*~

the past drifts away with the waves
by thelastdboy (@thelastdboyy)
E, WIP, 28k, Wangxian
Summary: The next time Wei Wuxian became aware of his surroundings and was able to form semi-coherent thoughts, Wen Zhuliu had just finished tying weights to his feet. Both his arm and his back were still bleeding and he felt as if he had been flayed. “Should I make it quick?” Wen Zhuliu asked him, offering a small mercy. But Wei Wuxian shook his head. “Give me your worst,” he snarled, his teeth coated in blood from where he had bitten his tongue at some point. “I will come back to end you all,” he promised darkly. “Very well,” Wen Zhuliu merely said and drowned him. Or: Yu Ziyuan cuts off Wei Wuxian's hand to appease the Wens. He gets drowned in the lake behind Lotus Pier and resentful energy transforms him into a river spirit. After avenging his own death, he finds his way to Yiling.

Hi ! Dont worry about not being as active, health and happiness comes first, and there is always someone whos willing to wait for you.
I just found the entwined au which i loved. I also had my theory for the follow up, that it was Robin who sabotaged Sunday. Because they have the same intentions but go about it differently. Probably she was the one who noticed Sundays obsesion the most and wanted to free you from that future.
As for Ratio, we are lucky he is on our side and cares for us, because, like you said, he isnt unwilling to use our trust to his benefit. Also Im guessing he was orphaned young but actually has royal blood? Probably his kingdoms court threw him out because they were corrupt? Those are my theories. Hopefully he doesnt find out or else we will be in trouble haha.
Also loved that Gepard was the best option among the suitors, is he not yandere? Hes like a puppy.
Finally the whole time i was imagining Himeko as my late mother but her dying would make me sad so Im wondering what the rest of the astral express is up to.
These were a few of my thoughts while reading! You wrote the scenes so well, when sunday won my heart dropped after all the tension. I was really hoping he would lose haha.
(entwined au masterlist)
Thank you so much for your kind words, it really means a lot to me :) <3
I'm so glad you like the Entwined AU! As for Robin, she's an interesting figure here, for sure. She cares deeply for both you and Sunday, her childhood friend and her dear brother, but even she can't turn a blind eye to Sunday's unhealthy obsession with you. She knows him better than anyone else, and she knows that his love is going to destroy the both of you if it goes unchecked. She loves her brother and wants to see him happy, but not at the cost of anyone else's prosperity and freedom.
I wouldn't say Robin is bold enough to cut the sash herself, but who's to say she wouldn't conspire against him? If beloved Princess Robin was seen talking in hushed whispers to Imperial Advisor Ratio before the dancing started, it's anyone's guess as to what they were discussing.
Yes, we're certainly in a lucky position when it comes to Veritas being on our side and being unknowing of his past— it'd be far too easy for him to seize your hand marriage if he knew the truth. You already trust him so easily, what reason would you have to deny him?
But yes, your guesses are correct: Veritas is a prince by blood, but was thrown out of his kingdom the moment he was born. His father had long since perished in a terrible war, and his mother perished in childbirth. It was far too easy for some corrupt advisors to get rid of him and say that the prince passed on with his mother. It was easy to hand the throne off to a different prominent family who promised them riches unfathomable if they managed to pull it off.
Queen Ruan Mei's advisory court are awfully nervous in your presence when it's Ratio at your side instead of Welt, though you and the queen herself cannot possibly imagine why.
Gepard is not yandere in this AU... I personally cannot imagine him being yandere in any capacity, so he is by default the best option of all the suitors. He's such a golden retriever, he'd treat you right and would protect you! Hopefully. Belobog's forces could stand against Penacony's... right?
I could never kill off Himeko, that would break my heart! I hadn't really thought about the other express members besides Welt, but now you've got me thinking... Maybe after the Entwined incident with Sunday, it's finally time for you to start gutting your advisory court and get rid of those who don't respect your wishes.
Welt is quick to recommend Himeko, a military strategist with a sharp mind and flawless record. After some more searching, you manage to also recruit March, a young but optimistic and sociable woman who's very in touch with the common people. You also recruit Dan Heng, a reserved but dependable political and economic analyst who plays the advisor role oddly well despite claiming to have no prior experience. (You'll have to look into those rumors about him having been a Xianzhou advisor. The last thing you need is Jing Yuan slithering his way into your business.)
It's so good to hear that you enjoyed the main story. I never could have imagined it would spawn into an entire world/AU like this! Your support means so much :)

in honor of my one year ✨blogiversary✨ if you will, as well as, consequently, one year of my beloved lil royals au, here's a little (read: accidentally a smidge long) something something with our favorite prince and guard :> feel free to read the rest of the royals au here <3
Roier doesn't understand the idea of traditions.
Well, he does, to an extent, but the fact of the matter is that he, truthfully, doesn't care about traditions.
He doesn't care for anything about the life of royalty, really, and would much rather run away with his beloved to live in a cozy cabin outside of the kingdom, getting eloped to an audience of no one but themselves and whoever's ordained to marry them, but alas, he can't get everything he wants.
No, he'll just break the rules set tradition instead.
Tradition says Roier isn't supposed to see Cellbit the night before their wedding, and his parents stationed two guards outside his room to make sure he doesn't leave.
Roier laughs at the fact they forget he always escapes through his window, anyway, and the fact they thought he could be left devoid of quality time with his beloved.
Besides, tradition says he's supposed to marry another member of the actual royal class, and, well, he let that concept go months ago.
(Apparently, guards don't count. Apparently, Cellbit especially doesn't count. Oh, well.)
(If his parents could marry who they loved, so can he.)
He knows where he's going. They set a meeting spot hours ago. Their spot. He'll miss being able to do this so much when he's king - when they're kings - but at least he won't have to go sneaking out to spend time with his husband.
(Husband. Husband.)
(His heart races at the prospect, warmth igniting his veins. Husband.)
So, this is what it feels like to be lucky.
...
Cellbit has heard the townspeople talk.
He's overheard it from the townspeople, hell, he's even overheard it from some of the guards themselves.
He's not supposed to be on the throne. He's supposed to be beside it. Guards aren't supposed to become proper royalty, let alone a king. That isn't tradition. Guards aren't supposed to marry their princes. That isn't tradition.
The personal guard has heard the words tradition and unusual and improper so many times that they're starting to not sound like real words anymore.
And it makes him worry a little, admittedly.
(Not for himself. Never for himself.)
(It's Roier he's worried about.)
Cellbit knows he got lucky becoming a guard in this kingdom, let alone Roier's personal guard. It certainly wasn't his unknown background that got him these positions, it was purely dependent on skill.
(If they knew who he truly was, he'd have been marched to the guillotine months ago. He wouldn't be here.)
Cellbit knows traditions. And he's fairly certain he doesn't fit a single one of them. By marrying Roier, marrying into a family that's always been so keen at upholding traditions, he knows the prince's image is at stake.
(Roier might not care about it, but Cellbit does.)
(He might not be a guard for much longer, but he always will be at heart. He swore to protect the prince with his life, and he will fulfill that to his last breath.)
He wonders if Roier made the right decision, abandoning his arranged marriage and choosing him, instead. Emotionally-speaking, certainly, but logistically...
Tradition getting thrown to the wayside typically doesn't bode well. The embodiment of everything tradition isn't taking its place? Well...
Cellbit holds onto the fact that Roier chose him anyway, throwing care to the wind and rekindling the dying embers because he loves just that intensely, and trusts that everything will be okay.
They will be okay.
(Even if the townspeople don't like him after this marriage, it doesn't matter. Roier likes him. Roier loves him, enough to drop it all in a heartbeat just for him. Just so they can be together. How?)
(He has the whole world right beside him; he doesn't need anything else. How can someone love so much?)
The storm of thoughts assailing his mind are brought to a grinding halt by a hand grasping his arm. Startled, he turns, but the surprise melts into a fluttery excitement when the moonlight illuminates his prince's presence, and he can't control the way his heart starts to hammer against his chest.
(Beautiful. Ethereal.)
(He wonders how he used to be so stoic around Roier, used to go to sleep without seeing soft brown eyes and a saccharine smile and--)
You're staring, gatinho.
Roier's laugh draws heat up the back of his neck, and he fumbles for a response that won't make him look stupid. Is staring at beautiful art suddenly a crime, guapito?
The prince shakes his head fondly, reorientating himself so he can cradle Cellbit's face in both of his hands. Ya, mi amor. Come here.
He pulls his face closer, pressing their lips together, and he feels gloved hands on his waist close any remaining space between their bodies by pulling him flush against the guard's chest.
(It's almost disorientating, feeling like they could burst. Feeling like the flames could burn them from the inside out.)
(It's addictive. It's love. How could they have come so close to giving this up?)
They only pull apart when oxygen demands it, and even then, Roier chases him for another brief kiss before taking a real moment to breathe.
Their foreheads press together, breathing in each other, the serenity that comes with their nights under the moon. And then, the prince is smiling again, a knowing curve of his lips. Mañana, eh?
It's Cellbit's turn to smile, holding him a little tighter at the words. Amanhã, meu príncipe.
(Everything changes tomorrow.)
(Tradition is useless, anyway.)

I really enjoy your stories' vibes and writing style, very good job! Would you mind writing about Aemond caring for a sick reader? Something like food poisoning, stomach bug, shivering, for a gender-neutral reader? It's okay if you won't!
ok i went a little off ask here but still aemond is taking care of a sick reader and there’s some bonus like protective!aemond and just very fluffy i hope you all enjoy!
also i’m sorry this is probably the worst thing i’ve ever written lmao 😭
warning: mentions of food and wine and mentions of being sick, *look to the ask above
You Make It Better
—-
A Targaryen feast was something renowned in the Seven Kingdoms. Every lord and lady jumped at the chance to be invited to one. The food was always piled higher than they could ever imagine, the music and dancing seemed to never stop.
It was the anniversary of Aegon officially declaring himself King of the Seven Kingdoms. This was to be celebrated on a grand scale.
As a member of the royal family, and Aemond’s partner in marriage, you had been assigned along with your mother and sister to oversee the decorations. It had taken many weeks to get this feast to perfection, and you had smiled all night, proud of your labor finally coming to fruition.
You had even gone to sleep with a smile, ignoring the ache in your stomach. You had probably ate too much.
—-
“My love?” You heard Aemond’s voice from the bed. You couldn’t answer. Sometime in the night, you had woken up in pain. You had moved to the window, opening it. You figured some fresh air would do you good. It did not. You heard Aemond sigh when he found you. “My love, there you are.” He must have noticed your pale complexion, the look on your face, because he got out of bed and walked over to you. He frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“Don’t feel good.” You had been shaking and shivering all night, and your legs felt too weak to stand.
“Come back to bed. I’ll call the maesters.” You smiled weakly.
“My legs feel shaky. I’m not sure I can.” He smirked that ridiculous smirk of his.
“Well, I’ll help you, of course.” You rolled your eyes and watched as he bent down, putting your arm around his shoulders. One of his circled around your waist, and you made it to the end without much problems. He frowned, again. “You’re shivering,”
“Will you lay with me?”
“Of course, my love, but let me-”
“Lay with me.”
He smirked. “How needy.”
You scoffed and rolled to the other side. He circled around the bed, leaning in front of you, smiling. You realized there was no escape, simply sighing with a smile.
“I’ll be right back. Just let me call the maesters, yeah?” You nodded, reluctantly. He left, and you watched the door for his arrival.
Aemond had this fascinating way of just making everything better. Even if he was just near you, his presence helped wonders no matter what ailed you.
He came back a few minutes later with the maester, and sat next to you on the bed, looking nervous. But Aemond was always so strong, you figured you must be seeing things. The maester greeted you, putting his palm to your hand. He touched your stomach, did more maester-y things you just complied with.
“I believe Y/N has food poisoning, Your Grace.”
“Someone poisoned my beloved?”
“Uh-“
He turned to you, quickly, grabbing your hands. “I will kill whoever has done to to you. I will revenge you.”
You placed a hand on his face. Barely containing your laugh, you spoke. “My love, no one poisoned me.”
“Prince Aemond,” The maester interrupted, and Aemond turned to him. “I only mean that they simply ate something that did not agree with them. No poison, I promise.”
“Oh.”
He was blushing, and you found it adorable.
“L-leave us.” The maester bowed, small smile on his face.
“Thank you!” You called as the door shut behind him.
“That was embarrassing.”
“No, my love, it was sweet. I promise.” He laid next to you, pressing his head to your chest. “Very chivalrous of you.”
“Am I your knight in shining armor?”
“Oh, of course.”
For the rest of the day and the next, Aemond did not let you move a muscle. It was slightly annoying, but you knew it only came from a place of love. Each night, he held you and showered you with love, wrapping furs around you as you shook.
He whispered how strong you were, how much he loved you, how you had dragonfire inside of you and would beat this in no time.
And, with Aemond by your side, you recovered quickly. He did have a way of making everything better.

"I didn’t say that the firm needs to look like Britain. I said the firm needs to look like the people, which also includes the 15 Commonwealth realms. The statistics look a little different when you incorporate the realms. Not a whole lot different, but different enough that it warrants some consideration. "
Different anon but I disagree.
1. Those realms chose the RF (and can still change their minds) knowing they were white so I don't understand the need to look like anyone.
2. I am a second generation immigrant. I grew up in a majorly white country with a white head of state and I don't understand this sudden need to have a HoS who looks like me. What I want is someone who understand me and acts on it and if you talk to many immigrants they can cite you many politicians from many backgrounds, not only those who looks like them, who did that.
3. Royalty is supposed to represent an ideal to atteign, in personality and lifestyle. Those things have no "race".
I don't know if I'm making myself clear but, I grew up knowing that racism was the ideology that there are other races than human race. And that those "races" could be ranked and are always inferior to "THE human race" (which in a racist mind means the white people). And I learned that fighting racism is realising that there is only one race: human race, whatever the form it has. I grew up thinking that anyone's skin color shouldn't be a prejudice and that only their personality matter. To give an example, what drew me to the RF all these years was the glamour, yes, but also the very public things they were living. Catherine's strength and resilience, her apparent silent determination are traits that my mother has and that I respect so much. Some of the things she is living today as well and I relate so much to her work with early childhood. William's speeches, his causes, his way to takle them, his strength. Same for the other working royals. (Ik it's mostly perceived, we don't know them) But they don't look like me.
I just don't understand why RFs in particular (because they are a white family and so can only add family members through marriage or adoption, which imo makes the discussion extremely toxic) should have this discussion on them. And I don't understand why it's a discussion on a broader space. The country where my parents were born is deeply, deeply corrupted. But we have politicians who look like us, we have a head of state who looks like us. I talked to many black american who thought Obama would change things but were left disappointed. But he looked like them.
I think we should wish for people who understand us (whatever the us is) or at least are willing to understand us because we are human and can be disappointed and not understood by people of all skin colors. I think that the obsession over "races" (from people who "defend" and people who attack) is why the racism keep going on.
So I don't think this angle of "race" discussion is helpful in any way. The proof I have is the Tuvalu controversy. Or the "optics" controversy. Omid and others like him use these pictures to stir the pot. They pretend to fight against racism but are racist in their very argumentation. Those people fought for independance and the right to make their own choices but because in Omid's and other's minds a white person is inherently superior, it is humiliating for the Tuvalu or Jamaican to be seen in those position with a white person but not with a non-white, and if we see white people being like this with royals, it's not important.
Fighting racism is admitting that the only reason the royals are "superior" is their position. Which mean that whoever chose to respect that postion in their prefered way shouldn't be called nor treated as a slave because of their skin color. And in the same way only their personality, their willingness to understand, should matter. Not their skin color.
Sorry for the long rant, I hope you'll understand my mumbles.
I'm really glad you shared this - your perspective is important.
You make a few really good points that I hadn't considered before, so I will be giving those some serious thought.

The Depiction of the Werewolves in TO
Tumblr media
Once again, I made a quick, I thought funny, tiktok, which has upset some people because of my, you could say, lack of sympathy for the wolves in TO. But don't blame me, blame the writers.
If you know anything about me, you know Hayley Marshall is a top favorite character for me. I love her growth and the journey she went on to find her family. Which is why, when she did find them (excluding the whole betraying Tyler thing), I was upset by how they treated her. You have Jackson telling her he was disappointed in their interaction, you have Oliver taking advantage of her hospitality and betraying her, and then the rest of her family doesn't even greet her/talk to her. She is supposed to be this "princess who is promised," and yet they can't even take a second to get to know her. I get, they have been cursed and are just trying to enjoy their human moments while they can, but it just didn't give me anything to bond with.
Except Eve. I loved Eve. She welcomed Hayley, not as some long lost royal, but as family. Eve is the first, and really only, werewolf/family that we, as the audience, get to see Hayley bond with. We see her helping Hayley prepare for her baby as well as teaching her about their culture. It's implied others are helping as well, but we never get to see it. It all happens off screen. I just know, if Eve had been alive, she would have been by Hayley's side after she "lost" Hope.
Which makes it so much worse when Oliver kills Eve. And all for power. This is where my dislike for the New Orleans werewolves comes in. Any other time we meet wolves, there is a strong sense of loyalty. You hear, Tyler and Jules and even Hayley talk about the packs they have been with and you see them working together to avoid/fight off Klaus. But then we get to the Crescent wolves and learn that they have been trying to kill each other for power. Not just in the past, we actively see Oliver get his own pack members killed and then kill Eve with zero consequences. Yes, Oliver does die, but not because of that. He is still given a proper burial, something we don't even get to see for Eve.
Now, an argument people use a lot with the wolves is that they are the oppressed. But this argument, to me, comes more from the historical portrayal of werewolves and less from the sources material we are discussing. Throughout much media, the wolves are meant to represent the oppressed -- the poor and downtrodden -- who have been taken advantage of by the blood-sucking aristocrats, the vampires. But in TO, Jackson tells us that the werewolves were at the top of the food chain until in-fighting got the better of them.
And we see this in flashbacks to 1919. Lana Lebonair is working with the Mikaelsons and they are able to create peace in the city with the witches. After the Mikaelsons flee, we don't know exactly what happened, but we know leading up to the 1990s there had been enough in-fighting that the Lebonairs and Kenners had set up an arranged marriage in hopes to quell the civil war that had broken out.
Unlike in other depictions of werewolves, the wolves were not inherently oppressed. The first werewolf we ever meet is Tyler Lockwood, who was by no means strapped for cash. In 1919, the Crescents were living in the Quarter, partying right alongside everyone else. It wasn't until their own members made power grabs did they have issues.
In hindsight, we are told these power grabs are due to the Hollow and someone implied that Marcel should have investigated the werewolves civil war before cursing all of them. First, I don't necessarily support Marcel in everything he does. To me, in Season 1, he was very much like Klaus and it was not my favorite version of him. Should he have cursed an entire pack for the actions of a handful, probably not. But the way Marcel talks about it, it was not just a handful, the entire pack was at war with itself. And the curse only applied to those who had triggered the curse or did trigger the curse, so no children. Again, was there a better solution, maybe, but was it up to Marcel to realize a ancient spirit had possessed one of their leaders when not even his wife had realized? That may be asking too much. Especially after he was watching them try to butcher a baby.
Due to this curse, the werewolves do end up isolated in the bayou. The curse lasts for about 20 years so many of the young members miss out on much of their early adulthood. This is something the show should have gone in on more. In my story, I try to explore this idea that, because of the curse, the werewolves are really disenfranchised. However, in the show, we don't get that. The only wolves we deal with are the leaders who are essentially using their pack as a power play. Aiden is the only leader who seems to be aware that these decisions are impacting the entire pack, and he gets reprimanded for speaking out. Aiden is so desperate to save his pack that he goes to his enemies (Elijah and Marcel) to protect the children from the decisions of his own pack members.
To me, the beauty of the werewolves comes from their loyalty, from how they work together and support each other. The depiction of the Crescent wolves flies in the face of everything I typically love about packs. The leaders abandon each other, have little respect for each other, and for some reason they have a monarchy. Hayley and Aiden are the only leaders we truly see fighting for the pack, and they are often disrespected by the very members they are trying to help.
In Season 1, Hayley is torn between the people who took her in and the pack that she always wanted to find. She ends up in the middle of the conflict and the pack (Oliver) often throws that in her face and uses her as a pawn to try and manipulate the Mikaelsons while also disrespecting her over and over again. But the thing is, they didn't need a pawn. They never tried to open discussions. Hayley marches into a faction meeting angry that the werewolves were not included in the discussion, but they had never asked to be included. As Elijah points out, the meeting was to divide up the Quarter and the wolves do not live in the Quarter. If you are familiar with New Orleans, you know the nearest bayou is about an hour drive away. But when Hayley asked (demanded) to be in the conversation, she was immediately included. She then signed a treaty saying the wolves would help create peace, only for her to go back to the bayou to discover Jackson and Oliver were both working behind her back to make a side deal with Klaus for more power. Instead of building peace, they were again lobbying for power. The very thing that got them cursed in the first place.
Someone argued, 'of course they are trying to get power, they don't want to be cursed again.' And sure, but even when they get their power from Hayley, it doesn't stop them from being cursed by Dahlia. But maybe if they had made friends with the witches, they would have been able to get help from Davina earlier than they did.
It's easy to look at each faction and point out how they've been wronged, but as Hayley points out, they've all harmed each other. If they all wanted reparations for that harm, it would never end. The wolves seem to get the short end of the stick a lot, because, as Jackson says, they were never unified. The witches were and the vampires were. It's not up to the other factions to cut them a break because they couldn't get it together. At the end of it all, they needed to move forward and worry about the future of their people. Which is what Hayley and Lana do leading up to Season 5, when New Orleans was able to actually achieve peace. Not surprising it took women being in charge before the pack found unity.
I would also like to point out that in my post I had also called out Klaus and Marcel. I am not solely blaming the werewolves for the war in New Orleans. But it is incorrect to say the werewolves were innocent bystanders in it. Their history is just as bloody as the other factions. The only faction that was innocent was the human faction who truly did not get a seat at the table. And of course, in any war, the people who ended up paying for these power moves were good people like Sophie and Eve.

Hi Papa Bear! I just read the prince Steven Grant story and it gave me an idea for something similar! (I hope that i won't bother you with this) so i had an idea where Steven a prince and is supposed to marry someone he doesn't even know. So when he hears these news he runs to find his boyfriend who is the jester for his family (i think those people were called jester's right?). And y/n comforts him and tells him it'll be alright. And than they sleep together as a way of distracting Steven from the marriage. And when the guy Steven's supposed to marry arrives they'll have like a little welcoming party and call the jester over. That's when they'll find out that the prince Steven's supposed marry is y/n's family member. So y/n has to explain that he ran away because he didn't want to be royalty. And later on Steven still has to marry the prince so he makes a plan with y/n to run away. But one of Steven's brothers finds out. Idk what could happen afterwards so I'll leave it up you! (Hope that this makes sense..?
I hope that i didn't bother you with this!
(and thank you for the bear facts i really love when you talk about bears)
Have a good night/day!
- Day 🦔
Heyy! Don't worry at all you're not bothering me at all! And sorry this took me a while to post!
K/n= Kingdom Name!
PRINCE STEVEN GRANT X JESTER MALE READER
Tumblr media
"Father! Did you know our lord prince Steven is getting married?" A little boy exclaims running towards his father.
"Did you guys know that the third prince is getting married!?" A different woman says to her group of friends. "What!?! I really hope he's marrying the princess of Nature!"
"I can't believe it! When is he getting married?" "Tonight brother!"
"Their hosting a huge ball for the marriage!"
As the commoners in the street crowd around spreading rumors ear to ear the royal jester stood in the middle of the streets turning his head back and forth every time he hears the name of the prince listing in.
Y/n's head was scrambled as he thinks as new information fills into his ears.
A news paper on the street before him catches his attention. Y/n bends over picking up the paper.
"Third moon prince is soon to be wedded!"
Y/n's hand gripped onto the paper as he felt his heart ache. Y/n couldn't believe it. And if it was true he wanted to hear it from his own lovers words. Y/n dropped the paper before walking as he walked he picked up the pace.
It became a speed walk then a tiny jog before soon after full on running. Y/n wasn't in his usual jester costume so getting inside the kingdom would be difficult.
Running past crowds of people, going through animals and other sorts he ran to the kingdom in search of his lover.
Y/n could see the kingdom in the far distance and he knew that it would take him a long time to get there by foot but he didn't care he just ran with all his might.
TIMESKIP
The jester stood in front of the kingdom looking up. Y/n's legs ached and he was no doubly tired. Y/n took a deep breath before collecting himself.
Y/n walked inside the kingdom where guards stood around the halls watching him carefully. The jester raises his hands in the air before saying. "I'm only here to pick up a few of my things. I'm the royal Jester alright." Y/n says but the guards didn't believe him.
Some even raised their swords pointing it at Y/n.
"It's true! He's the personal Jester for the royal family." A guard says before putting his sword back inside it's holder.
"Thank you!" Y/n says with an eye roll before putting his hands down walking inside the kingdom.
With no more eyes on him Y/n jogged upstairs going up until he's at the highest floor.
Once Y/n made his destination Y/n walked through the halls looking for his lovers room. With no guards around at the largest door Y/n opens it.
"Steven?" Y/n questions looking around the dark room. Quiet sniffling could be heard inside the room. With using the light from the window Y/n looked around searching where his lover could be.
"Steven?..." Y/n says breathlessly seeing Steven on the floor in his reading area. Steven had his knees to his chest hiding his face.
"Oh my prince..." Y/n says softly before kneeling down beside Steven before reaching up putting one hand on Steven's head combing through his hair. "Don't cry lord. Please..." Y/n says as Steven raises his head up from his arms.
"I don't wish to be married! I-I only love you!" Steven exclaims as tears fall from his eyes.
"Steven... It'll be alright. We'll get through this you hear me. I'll figure something out okay." Y/n wrapped his arms around Steven holding him tightly in his arms.
"I don't want to marry anyone besides you Y/n! We told each other tha-" Steven gets cut off by Y/n kissing him gently. "Steven... We are going to be alright. You are going to be alright." Y/n says kissing Steven once more before picking up off the ground.
Steven lets out a surprise yelp before holding Y/n. Y/n laid Steven down on the bed before laying down with him.
"What are we doing?..." Steven questions as he relaxes into Y/n's arms.
"Were going to sleep. We have only a few hours left until we both have to get ready." Y/n says as he rubs circles into Steven's back trying to help him relax and get comfortable.
"Will you be here when I wake up?"
"Always my lord."
TIMESKIP
Y/n was with the other commoners, but this time he was in his Jester make up and costume. Y/n was entertaining the poor guest as the other rich/wealthy ones were on the other side of the ball.
The colors of Y/n's costume matched the kingdoms'own, showing others in different kingdoms where his loyalties lie. Y/n was showing the crowd his usual routine until something catches his eye.
Loud music played with crowds cheered.
Y/n's whole body froze seeing what kingdom had just arrived. A kingdom that Y/n prayed to the gods that he'll never see again.
With the Jester's own audience catching their attention they left the stunned Jester to go investigate.
Y/n sighs out the breath he was holding in before dispersing into the crowd in hope that the kingdom wouldn't recognize him.
"Welcome the K/n! And to the crown prince L/n!" A loud knight shouts as the whole ball screams and cheers. Y/n's felt his blood run cold as both Moon kingdom and K/n greet each other with the two weds nervously look at each other.
"This is the moment of happiness! So there's no other way of showing happiness than our grand Jester!" The same knight exclaims catching the Jester off guard.
"Sadly the show is only for the freshly new combined kingdoms!" The knight shouts letting people's hopes fall down.
As everything goes back as to it was Y/n rush to the area both kingdoms were.
Y/n's eyes get locked with his lovers. Steven could see the sadness in Y/n's eyes and it almost made his own tear, The two lock eye contact before a while before Y/n breaking it to do his act.
Some of the different members in both kingdoms throw things at Y/n saying "Boo!" And other nasty things.
But Y/n just ignored them and continued with his routine. Some of things thrown at Y/n hurted like hell, but the Jester just fought through the pain.
One of the things thrown at him was a bottle of wine hitting him right in the face alongside breaking on impact. The makeup on Y/n's face started to ruin from the wine revealing some of his face.
Immediately Y/n covered his face. Y/n acted like he was hurt, but the truth is that Y/n didn't want to be recognized by his family.
Steven opened his mouth to speak, but his oldest brother beat him to it.
"Maids! Get him cleaned up. It seems that his presence isn't welcomed." Marc says snapping his hands to nearby maids.
"Is it me or does that boy's face looked familiar?" A cousin from the L/n family says with an eyebrow raised. "I agree. His face looked oddly familiar to Y/n's god let him rest in peace." A different cousin adds.
"I'm sorry, but who is Y/n?" Steven questions confused as to what they said. Steven knew Y/n's name and everything, but whats the considience having the same name as someone royal.
"He's my eldest son. He was supposed to be king a few years ago. But suddenly disappeared years ago. We spent ages looking for him, but we found his diseased body near a lake recently." The queen of the K/n says wiping a small near.
Steven thinks to himself before a switch clicks in his head.
"Excuse me." Steven says bowing his head a little before leaving in search of the Jester.
TIMESKIP
"Who are you!" Steven exclaims looking at the Jester in the middle of an empty hallway. "My lord... You already know this I am Y/n Foster." The Jester answers turning his body around looking at Steven.
"Lies! Tell me the truth before I call for the knights." Steven exclaims.
"My love. I-I." Y/n couldn't find himself to answer choking on his own words.
"Please. Please just tell me the truth." Steven says.
...
It was silent. They both stared at each other with so much intensity.
"Crown prince L/n... The eldest son of K/n." Y/n breathes out before adding. "I left my kingdom, because I didn't want to be royalty. I didn't want to be a king of a kingdom that I hate! So I faked my death with the help of my maids."
Y/n clenched his fist before adding "I'm sorry that I lied for all these years, but I have never lied about my love for you Steven! Please--- Please don't marry my cruel brother." Y/n begs.
"During the fireworks... I will be at the dock with my bags packed." Steven says not even thinking about the plan fully.
"I'll meet you there." Y/n says before walking up to Steven before kissing him deeply.
Behind the corner Jake watched and listened. Once Y/n left Jake appeared from the corner.
"I'll buy you some time." Jake announces catching his younger brother off guard.
"Wh-what?" Steven stutters out.
"I said i'll buy you some time. I heard all of it. The only thing I didn't suspect was the Jester was actually the dead king. I'll distract them while you pack your things." Jake says before adding.
"Just promise me that you'd send me letters every month alright!" Jake says before shoving Steven away lightly.
Steven gives Jake a bright smile before quickly running upstairs.
TIMESKIP
Y/n sat on the dock with his things by his side looking up at the fireworks in the sky. The different colors from the fireworks and the moonlight glow shining on Y/n.
Creaks on wooden docks makes Y/n turn his head around. Steven held his bags in his hands looking at Y/n.
"You came!" Steven exclaims jogging up to Y/n smiling. "Of course i'm here!" Y/n says getting up on his feet walking up to Steven before taking his hand.
"What's the plan now?" Steven asks watching a smile crawl onto Y/n's smile.
"We can do anything now. We just gotta stay low for a while. Hell we can even be pirates!" Y/n says picking up his and Steven's bags. As the two aboard a ship that Y/n stole.
"We'll figure out the rest as we go."

Being born a goddess in Asgard came with lots of fabulous parties, countless gowns and jewels, and lots of mingling with the other Gods and Goddesses Asgard housed. Ingrid had been born the goddess of song, her musicality bringing peace and prosperity to Asgardians. She could heal broken hearts with her songs, put one to sleep with her songs, and compel those to her will with her songs.
She was a kind and beautiful goddess, her name even meaning "beautiful woman." Because of her kindness, she never used her compelling voice to lure those to their deaths, or have them do as she pleased. She only used her voice for good, and it brought so much harmony to Asgard.
Her talent was unmatched on every level, and Asgardians were willing to pay her thousands to teach their offspring even a sliver of what it meant to sing like her.
But she never shared the secrets of her voice.
There weren't any secrets to be shared. She was born with her gift, and never had to work to make it better. It was the epitome of a perfect voice.
So perfect that many wanted it for themselves.
Ingrid had to be cautious of who she trusted enough to get close to her. The wrong person with the right spell could take her voice from her. While no such spell was easy, magic was a well practiced craft in Asgard, and someone highly skilled in magic could, with the right research, take her voice from her.
Her talent was mystical, and she most often used it for healing purposes. For example, when a family member passed away, people would come to her and ask for a song to ease their pain. She had a way of letting the spirits sing through her, and her songs were able to make grief easier.
Ingrid was the youngest of the Gods. She was only nineteen in Midgardian years, the sons of Odin beating her by a miniscule two years.
Ingrid lived in the castle, and she saw the royals as her second family. When she was a young girl, her parents, also Gods, were killed by the Dark Elves, so she was left orphaned. Odin and Frigga took her in, and she grew up alongside Thor and Loki.
She grew up knowing her and Thor were to be married once she reached the age of twenty. Her and Thor had grew up close, but she knew, deep down, she'd never be able to love him like she was supposed to. They say everyone has their person, and she knew Thor wasn't hers. She did love him, just in a friendly way. But she knew she'd have to bear his children, so she tried to be attracted to him, but it never worked the way it was supposed to.
"You look beautiful today, my darling," Thor said as Ingrid grabbed his arm.
They were headed to a feast to celebrate their marriage, as the wedding was set to be a month away.
"Thank you, Thor," she replied, smiling at him.
When the couple entered the grand dining room, they were greeted by cheers from all the Asgardian people in attendance. Ingrid smiled, waving at her friends, and following Thor before the two took a seat at the head of the table.
"Thank you, to all my lovely people," Thor boomed, the room going quiet. "And thank you," he started, gazing over to his fiance. "To my beautiful bride-to-be for everything. I'm the luckiest man in the nine realms to get to marry you."
Everyone at the table swooned, Ingrid looking over and giving Thor a smile. He raised his glass and everyone followed suit, a toast in order.
"To love!" Thor cheered.
"To love!" Everyone else cheered.
Ingrid just raised her glass, she didn't say anything else. A part of her mourned the fact that she'd never be able to find her true love. She only hoped that one day her heart would come to love Thor the way that a lover should.
She took leisurely sips of her wine, laughing at someones joke every once and awhile. She loved the people of Asgard, and she knew it was the highest honor to become their queen, but her heart longed to love. It longed to be loved by an all consuming love, one that challenged her and thrilled her, excited her in ways she never even knew possible.
But she'd never get the chance to find it.
"What about a song from the lady?" A man said, standing up and motioning his glass towards Ingrid.
"Oh," she stuttered, caught off guard by the request.
"Yes," another man piped up. "A song from the goddess to bless her marriage!"
"I mean," she blushed. "I don't have anything prepared."
"What could the goddess of song not have prepared? Sing us something!" Another man boomed.
"I don't know, I mean, I don't really think I have it in me to sing right now," she sheepishly replied.
"Oh come on, darling," Thor smiled. "Sing us something."
"I don't really want to," she said to Thor, giving him a tight smile.
Ingrid never liked to be put on the spot, and Thor knew that. But she also couldn't deal with disappointing people, so saying no wasn't something she was good at. Thor also knew this.
"Aw how come?" Thor boomed, obviously a bit drunk, as he smiled down at her. "Bless us and our marriage with a song!"
"I don't- Thor, I didn't prepare to sing anything," she said, silently pleading with him to let it go.
"You're the goddess of song," he emphasized. "You don't need to prepare anything," he smiled.
Ingrid often had anxiety around being put on the spot, as she liked to have a sort of mental preparation. Ingrid suffered from a severe case of PTSD, which contributed to her severe anxiety.
When she lost her parents, she was ten years old. She watched as the dark elves stormed into her home and brutally murdered both of her parents in front of her. They only missed her because she hid in her parents closet.
The images of her parents being killed stayed with her, haunting her.
It's safe to say her anxiety was prominent in her life.
"Thor," she started whispering. "Everyone is looking at me, I don't think I should sing right now."
"C'mon darling, everyone loves your voice! I mean look at them," Thor said, gesturing to the group of people in the dining room, looking excitedly at their goddess of song.
"I don't want to," she said.
"Ingrid, you're the goddess of song, I don't understand-"
"The lady said she didn't want to sing, therefore she won't," a voice said from the back of the dining hall.
The voice in question came from none other than Thor's brother, Loki. Ingrid and Loki had always gotten along. He understood her traumas, since he had found out he was adopted a couple years back.
Her and Loki had grown up never too close, but never distant either. They would often just sit with each other and read in the library. He always kept to himself, but he always tried to be out of his brothers shadow as well. Ingrid had always found Loki fascinating, his magic so strong yet himself so quiet. But when he did have something to say, it was always well worded and intelligent.
When Loki spoke up, the entire dining hall went silent, and all eyes gazed to him. He was dressed in his more casual Asgardian leather, yet nevertheless eye catching. His hair was slicked back as it always was, his black curls resting on his shoulders.
"Ah, brother!" Thor announced. "How wonderful of you to join us!"
"How could I ever miss such an occasion?" He sarcastically remarked, his hand landing over his heart.
As he walked to the table to take a seat, he made eye contact with Ingrid, who mouthed a 'thank you' to him. He just nodded and smiled back at her.
The rest of the party went on as they all do; they ate, Thor and his friends had too many beers to count, and the others mingled together. Ingrid felt overwhelmed by the noise and commotion in the room, so she wandered out to the garden. The gardens were her favorite place in the castle, the flowers and plants always having a way of soothing her. Freyr always did wonders for the gardens.
Her favorite was the Dreamshade plant, an Asgard specialty. It was beautiful when it bloomed. Next to the Dreamshade plot of the garden was a beautiful wooden, white swing next to it, hung by a tree. Ingrid would often find herself out there reading.
She sat down on the swing and started to rock back and forth. She sipped on the wine she had carried with her, the liquid making her warm with each sip she took. The breeze encapsulated her, sending a chill down her spine.
She heard the boom of Thor's laughter from inside and took another swig of her wine. She was supposed to be Asgard's blushing bride, they're grateful queen to be. But instead, she's sitting in the garden, away from her own party for her own marriage, fighting back tears. She was orphaned at ten, and months after she had been taken in by the king and queen, she was betrothed to Thor. Her future had been written for her before she was old enough to fully harness the concept of true love and marriage.
And she did, she did love Thor. They had grown up together. Just as she loved Loki. But Thor never made her feel the way her friends' partners made them feel. They'd all talk about butterflies, feeling giddy. All she felt was a longing for something she didn't have.
She wished her voice could cure her own sadness.
"Ingrid?" Came the voice of Loki. He had found his way out to her at the gardens, slowly walking up to her as to not wake her.
"Loki," she gasped, breaking out of her trance. She then noticed the tears that had fallen down her face, quickly wiping them away.
"Why are you crying?" He asked, coming to sit next to her.
"I don't know," she said. "I didn't even realize I was."
"Is everything alright?"
"Nothings alright," she whispered. "I just, I feel hopeless and, I don't know. I'm sorry, I've had too much wine," she hiccuped.
"It's okay, we've all had too much wine," he grinned.
"It's good wine."
"It is indeed."
Her and Loki sat in silence. They let the breeze wash over them, and they let the smell of the flowers consume them. Ingrid was drunk, and she knew this because she felt like she could go up to Thor and tell him she didn't want to get married to him. At the end of the day, she'd never do such a thing, but the fact that it was even a thought she had confirmed the wine had done it's job.
The wine was also making her think things she shouldn't be thinking at all.
Looking over to Loki, she let her eyes wander over his smooth features, and the sharp curve of his jaw. He was sculpted perfectly, and on Midgard, they liked to say handsome men looked like "Greek Gods." Loki wasn't a Greek God, but he was a God.
Ingrid had always had a crush on Loki. He was charismatic yet smart. Funny yet serious, and mischievous at the same time. He always excited her, made her stomach knot when he teased her. He made a blush arise to her cheeks that never appeared for anyone else.
But she never let this crush get the best of her or distract her from what she was supposed to be focused on.
The wine allowed these thoughts to push through, though.
"I don't think," she started. "I don't think I wish to marry Thor."
"What?" Loki asked, his head snapping to her.
"I don't love him like that."
"I don't understand," Loki said, his brow furrowing. "You two have always been in love."
"It's been fake," she said, taking another gulp of her wine. "For me, at least."
"Ingrid-"
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't be telling you all of this. I should," she hiccups. "I should get to bed."
As she tries to stand, Ingrid's wine glass falls out of her hands, smashing on the ground. Her legs start to wobble, and before she knows it, she too is falling to the ground. Loki is at her side in an instant, catching her before her head hits the grass.
"Ingrid, darling," he gasped at her. "You've got to be more careful."
"I'm sleepy," is all that she mumbles, her eyes rolling shut.
"Okay," Loki says, hoisting her into his arms. "Lets get you to bed then."
Loki proceeded to carry her out of the garden and around the side of the castle to a side entrance, wanting to keep people from seeing them in this state together to prevent gossip. Through the corridors and up the stairs leading to her room, Ingrid was giggling at random things that she saw.
Once Loki got upstairs to her room, he carried her inside and gently placed her on the bed. She sighed contentedly when she felt her plush covers beneath her, melting into her mattress. She slowly blinked her eyes open, grinning when she noticed Loki looking down at her.
"Comfortable?" He asked.
"Yes," she sighed. "Thank you for bringing me up here."
"Of course."
"Loki?" She piped up, sitting up on her elbows. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course," he replied, taking a seat on her bed.
"Will everyone despise me if I don't say yes to Thor at the altar?"
She watched as Loki's expression softened, his head tilting to the side. She didn't want to cause a fuss, but she couldn't see herself living a long and prosperous life with Thor.
"Ingrid," he started. "Where is this coming from? Everyone thinks the two of you are in love."
"I've never gotten to explore any romantic interests of any kind because i've always been promised to him. But I don't love him like that. I've tried, Loki. He's not the one for me."
"I don't know if you have much of a choice, darling," Loki says, his lips flattening into a disappointed straight line. "What Odin wants, Odin gets."
"He's not the one that I want," she whispered, staring at Loki intently.
His brows furrowed and then relaxed again. Ingrid knew that her remark was suggestive, and would definitely be something she regretted saying the following afternoon. But as per the wine, it felt very appropriate to say.
"I suppose if your suitor of choice is as high of rank as a God to be king, Odin might not have as many complaints."
"He's something like that," she sighed.
Loki began to respond to her, but he was stopped by two sharp knocks on her door. She gave Loki a puzzled look, and he gave her a puzzled look back, neither one of them knowing who could be at the door.
Loki stood and went to the door to open it, and when he did, it was revealed to be Thor on the other side. Loki moved aside to let his brother in, and Thor's eyes immediately went to Ingrid.
"There you are, darling. Are you alright?"
"Yes, just sleepy," she replied, her eyes blinking slowly.
"Why did you escort my lady to her bed chambers without letting me know?" Thor asked, turning to his brother who stood silently in the corner.
"Because she was passing out in the gardens and I didn't want anyone seeing her in such a vulnerable state," Loki replied.
"Passing out in the gardens?" Thor said, whipping around to look at his bride lying on the bed, still in her evening gown.
"I've had a bit too much wine," she said, pinching her fingers in the air as an example of how much wine she's had.
"Why did you even leave to the gardens in the first place?" Thor asks.
"It was loud," she sighs.
"I'm sorry, darling. I know me and my friends can be loud at times."
"Very loud," she annunciated.
Ingrid pushed herself up off of her bed and stumbled into her closet and grabbed one of her silk nightgowns, walking back out and throwing it down on her bed. She started undoing the pins in her hair, feeling immediate relief at the release of tension in her head. The two brothers stood there watching her, and she stopped her motions to give them both a quizzical look.
"What?" She asked. "Have neither of you seen a lady get ready for bed?"
They both stuttered out sorries as they started to exit the room. Thor crossed over to Ingrid and kissed her cheek, whispering a goodnight to her. She caught Loki's eye by her door, and she gave him a small smile. He nodded back to her. The two brothers exited her room, and once she heard the door click she brushed her dress off of her shoulders.
Once she was ready, Ingrid slipped under her covers. She could still feel the alcohol coursing through her veins.
Before her parents passed away, her mother would sing her a song before bed every night. It stuck with her, and sometimes the goddess would sing it to herself before bed, just to imagine her mother there with her. Tonight was one of those nights.
Ingrid felt helpless, her marriage to Thor was rapidly approaching, and there was nothing she could do about it.
She needed her mothers advice more than anything. So Ingrid sang her song.
Nuku, nuku nurmilintu, Väsy, väsy, västäräkki Nuku nurmelle hyvälle Vaivu maalle valkialle. Lintu tuopi liinahapaijan Haapana hyvän hamehen Kaskeloinen korvatyynyn Pääskynen peäalusen Nuku, nuku nurmilintu Väsy, väsy, västäräkki Nuku nurmelle hyvälle Vaivu maalle valkialle.
Ingrid sang her song louder than she's ever sang it before. Usually she would sing it as a whisper, only to keep for herself. But she felt (probably because of the wine) that everyone needed to hear it. And everyone did hear it. Everyone in Asgard heard their goddesses song, and they heard the pain and longing in her voice as she sang. It was vulnerable, and it was beautiful.
And it lulled her and the entire kingdom to sleep.
~~
Ingrid woke the next morning to being shook by her shoulders.
As she opened her eyes, she saw Thor, Frigga, Loki, and a few castle healers surrounding her on her bed. Thor was shaking her awake, concern written all over his face. Everyone looked worried, and Ingrid looked quizzically back at them.
"What?" She asked, worried as to why everyone was so concerned about her.
"Ingrid," Thor said. "Ingrid, are you alright? We've been trying to wake you for an hour. It's one in the afternoon."
Ingrid shot up at that, looking to her clock to confirm the time. She had never slept that long. Wine wouldn't do that to her either, as she's had her fair share of drunken nights far worse than the one she had last night.
"I'm sorry, I'm not sure why I did that," she said, but the people surrounding her just looked more confused.
"Ingrid, darling, what are you saying?" Frigga asked, taking a step closer to her."
"I'm asking-," She started, but she realized that not a single sound was coming out. "Can you not hear me?"
"Darling, we can't hear you," Thor said. "You're just moving your mouth."
All of the blood drained from Ingrid's face as it hit her all at once.
Her song.
She sang her lullaby last night in a very drunk and vulnerable state, making her an easy target. And she was loud. Everyone in the kingdom heard her sing. And someone had done the one thing she had feared.
They had taken her voice.
As soon as it clicked in her mind, her eyes locked to Loki's, and she could tell that he had made the same observation.
"Someone took her voice," he stated, his eyes never leaving hers.
"That's impossible," Thor said, standing up.
"Oh no, it's quite possible, brother," Loki stated, his hands clasped behind his back. "A strong sorcerer heard her song last night, and the vulnerability behind it, and used the right spell. Her voice is gone."
"That cannot be!" Thor boomed, pacing around the room. "Who dare strip my bride of her Godly power?"
"Thor," Frigga said, walking over and comforting her son. "Whoever did this to dear Ingrid will be punished. We will find them."
"What are we supposed to do, mother? She's a goddess, and she's lost her ability. People need her," Thor said.
"She is more than just her gift, my son. She will help her people in incredible ways without her voice."
"Mother, she is the goddess of song. Not the goddess of kindness. She is not a goddess without her voice," Thor stated, blankly.
To hear Thor say this about her, in her bedroom, made her mouth run dry. It was as if she wasn't in the room to him. It was hurtful, and she had never heard Thor speak of her in this way.
"Thor," Frigga scolded. "You know better than that."
"She is not worthy of Asgard's throne if she cannot serve her people like she so promised!" He yelled.
The room fell silent, and Ingrid drew her knees up to her chest to hug them, tears freely falling from her eyes. The only thing that could be heard throughout the room were Ingrid's quiet sniffles, and everyones eyes turned to her when they started.
Thor's eyes immediately softened when he met her teary ones, guilt racing across his face.
"Ingrid, my darling," he started, walking up to her. "I didn't mean it, I'm so sorry-"
But he was cut off by Ingrid's hand shooting up to stop him. He bounced back, hurt flashing across his eyes.
"Ingrid," he pleaded.
She shook her head in response, as no sound would leave her vocals.
"You should go," Frigga said.
"Mother," he said, looking over to Frigga.
"No, Thor. You've done enough damage, it's best for you to go."
With a sigh, and one last regretful look at Ingrid, Thor walked out of her room. Once he left, Ingrid's shoulders started to heave, sobs wracking through her body. She had just woken up, and it was so much to process. She hadn't even gotten the chance to full realize her voice had been stolen from her before the man she considered one of her best friends and was supposed to marry started hurling insults about her in her own bedroom.
Frigga sat down on her bed and pulled her into her. She combed through her hair and whispered sweet words to her to calm her down. Frigga was the closest thing Ingrid had to a mother, and she made her feel better when she needed a mom.
"We will overcome this, my darling," Frigga said. "We'll find whoever took your voice from you. You are no less of a goddess this morning than you were last night. I'm truly sorry for my sons words."
"It's okay," Ingrid said, or tried to say. She felt a blush rise to her cheeks, and just nodded back at Frigga instead.
"Loki," Frigga said, motioning for her other son. "Why don't you entertain our girl with some of your magic? Or perhaps a card game? You two used to love to play together."
Loki gave his mother a small smile and nodded his head at her.
"Of course, mother," he replied.
"Thank you, my boy. She is in need of a friend."
Frigga exited the room, along with the healers, leaving Ingrid alone with Loki. She sighed before looking at him, his eyes swiftly meeting hers. The silence was uncomfortable. There were so many things she wanted to say to him. She wanted to apologize for her actions and words last night, she wanted to confide in him about her tumultuous love life, and she wanted to tell him he was the one that she wanted. But everything would have to be left unsaid.
When they were children, Loki would often put on 'magic shows' for Ingrid. Once, Odin asked for one, and Loki told his father that they were 'only for Ingrid.' His magic entertained her, and he knew this, so each time he'd put on a show for her, he made sure he was showing his favorite tricks.
"So," Loki started, carefully taking a seat next to her on the bed. "I've been working on a new trick."
Ingrid sat up a bit at that, her interest showing. Loki took this as her go ahead.
He raised his hand in the air, palm face up, and mini fireworks started coming out of thin air in the palm of his hand. Ingrid let a smile grace her features, a laugh wanting to escape her so badly.
"It's nothing huge," the God said. "But it's pretty."
Ingrid nodded her head at him, her smile widening. He let out an airy laugh, smiling back at her. He closed his hand, making the fireworks disappear. Ingrid let her smile settle, and his did too. She felt his hand creep to hers, grabbing it in his large hand and giving it a squeeze. Loki's hands were soft. Silky smooth. Just like his voice. Ingrid looked down at their hands, and then looked back to him, her gaze questioning.
"I'm sorry for what my brother said," he started, his gaze soft upon her. "And I'm sorry for the predicament you're in."
Her gaze hardened, a blush forming on her cheeks. She had hoped she had dreamt about telling Loki about her true desires regarding her marriage, but it was evident she had confided in him.
"I've not forgotten our little talk last night," he confirmed, making the girl look away from him. "And I want to help you. I know how it feels to be burdened with something you don't want."
"How can you help?" Ingrid so badly wanted to ask. She wasn't used to not having her voice, and she didn't like it.
"And I'm sorry that you lost your voice," he continued. "You're still a goddess, Ingrid. You always will be. No one can strip you of that."
She gave him a faint smile in return, squeezing his hand back. His hands were ice cold, yet she didn't shiver away from his touch. In fact, she wanted more of his touch. Loki had always brought her comfort, but her hand in his gave her a sense of being grounded no touch had ever given her before.
Everyone knew Loki and Ingrid had a connection deeper than they understood. Loki had never been one to open up, but he had always told Ingrid everything. She too, told him her deepest secrets. They had both seen each other in their most vulnerable states, therefore creating a bond no one could understand.
She had always had feelings for the prince, but she felt naughty when she thought of acting on them. After all, she was engaged to his brother, the future king. She should be fawning over Thor, the future king of Asgard. But instead, Ingrid often found herself lusting over Loki in the shadows.
"Ingrid," Loki's voice said, but this time in her head, his silky voice sending chills down her spine. She gave him a startled look, his telepathic abilities something she wasn't used to. "You can speak back," he continued.
"This is oddly frightening," she said back, not really sure if he could hear her say that or not.
"But now you have someone to speak to," Loki's voice said, confirming he had heard her.
"I can't believe that worked," she said, looking at him wide eyed. They had never communicated telepathically to one another. She knew that he could, but she couldn't. He had obviously made it to where she could communicate back with him. She hoped he couldn't read her mind.
"I can," he said. When she looked at him, mortified, he had a small smirk playing on his lips. "I can hear everything you're thinking."
"Loki stop," she threatened. "I'm more than happy to speak with you because I need it, but I can't have you reading my mind."
"Why? Something naughty you don't want me to know?" He smirked.
Her face heated up, and at the mention of naughty thoughts, images of Loki popped into her head. She quickly willed those thoughts away, her face turning bright red out of fear he saw her thoughts of him.
"I'll take that as a yes," he said, grinning at her.
"Loki, get out of my head," she warned.
"But I'm curious as to why you think of me so much," he replied.
If her face wasn't red before, it was cherry red now. She looked at him mortified, and put her head in her hands, shaking it. She was hoping that her actions were enough to get the God out of her head. His laughter rumbled throughout the room as he watched the girl in front of him, clearly in distress.
He moved to sit closer to her on the bed, and her breath hitched. She peeked an eye at him, and she saw him smirking down at her. She was feeling hot, her hands clammy and her forehead sweaty. Loki being this close to her in this state was making her feel fuzzy, and she couldn't tell if she wanted away from him or if she wanted closer to him.
"Who do you desire, my dear?" His voice still in her head, making goosebumps break out all over her body. "Who were you speaking of last night when you said you wanted someone other than Thor?"
"Loki," she said sternly, a warning. If he kept on, she didn't know how long she'd be able to hold her resolve.
"Tell me," he growled, his hand finding purchase on her thigh.
She lightly jumped at the contact, her mouth parting, the air leaving her lungs. She didn't think he felt the same about her, and the realization that he did was both thrilling and terrifying. It excited her because she had always had feelings for him, and it terrified her because of Thor.
"Of course I feel the same, Ingrid," he said, and she took in a sharp breath of air. "How could I not?"
"Because I'm marrying Thor," she said.
"I don't care. You clearly don't want to marry him."
She was at a loss for words, literally and figuratively. Loki was her greatest friend, and she worried what this would do to their relationship. She didn't know how they would go forward. She was to be married in a month and that terrified her.
"This is not how I expected my day to go," she said to him.
"Mine either," Loki chuckled, this time out loud. "I should let you rest, dear. I'm going to assist Odin in finding who stole your voice."
She just nodded at him as he stood up off the bed. She bent back down, however, caging Ingrid in between his arms, causing her to lean back onto her elbows. Her heart was thumping in her chest, and he smirked back at her. One of his hands came up and settled under her jaw, cupping her cheek. She instinctively leaned into his touch, her cheeks bright red again. He leaned forward and took his thumb across her lips, huffing out a laugh as her lips parted.
"Don't think I'll forget this talk," he drawled, his voice deep and smooth like chocolate.
She nodded back at him, swallowing the lump in her throat. He pulled her forward by the neck, and she stopped breathing as she expected his lips upon hers, her eyes fluttering shut. But instead of his lips finding hers, she felt them firmly press on her forehead.
"See you later, darling," he smirked, pulling away from her and laughing as she sat on the bed dazed and wide eyed.
She watched as he sauntered out of her room, and she let out the breath she had been holding. Her hand found her chest, and she placed it there as she slowed her rapid heartbeat. She flopped back on her bed, a small smile forming on her lips.
Maybe this month wouldn't be so bad after all.

You were 18 years old when your parents first tried to wed you off to a prince, but his timid self stood no chance against someone like you - someone whose words were like knives aimed perfectly at his heart, cutting into his insecurities and weaknesses. The wedding proposal was called off right after your first encounter with him.
You were 20 years old when your parents tried to wed you off to a prince from a different kingdom, hoping that the rumours about you that had spread over the years died down enough to not scare his family away. You might have spoken with knives, but Prince Sangdo didn’t obey any rules, he overruled them. Even if you asked him to keep his distance - to respect your privacy -, he didn’t listen to you. A week before the wedding was supposed to happen, he visited the palace, he visited you in your chambers uninvited, and what happened afterwards put an end to this wedding as well.
You didn’t regret it one bit - in fact, you wished Prince Sangdo could have rotted in a faraway place -, but it was you who was sent far away from your kingdom, from the cages of the palace where you had grown up. You were sent to Medicalia - the kingdom where some people possessed magical healing powers. Magical medicine was mostly used on the members of the Medicalia royal court including the royal family and the royal army, plus magical creatures that lived in the woods or in the mountains - such as fairies, unicorns and werewolves - or serving the kingdom - such as dragons guarding the palace. Magical medicine was also extremely rare since only magic practitioners could deal with it because they were the ones born with the ability to tame magic, but even they needed thorough practice and extensive training to be able to make use of their abilities to their full potential.
At least, that’s what you were told when you were ordered to pack up and leave after an exchange of letters between the two kingdoms. The magic in your kingdom - Animalia - lied in the ability to tame and speak to animals, and that’s exactly why most kingdoms were always indebted to you. You sent people to other kingdoms to tame their animals - such as the dragons guarding the royal palaces and the unicorns that had an excellent smell to detect magical plants - you shared your magic with them whereas it was extremely rare for other kingdoms to share their magic with others. For instance, Medicalia reserved their magical medics for the royal court while Naturalia boosted the magic of nature, and the trading of their magical plants was limited to their kingdom only.
That’s why it was ridiculously easy to send you into exile in another kingdom, and the only thing your father - the King - said before leaving was to not make more trouble. You were sent off in a carriage with a coachman and a servant, not even a royal guard was sent with you. Then again, what could they possibly guard? You weren’t worth their protection, for sure. You didn’t need to be told that you were only one mistake away from being disowned by your own parents since you were an asset, nothing else. A strategic move, the key to a strengthened connection between kingdoms and a woman forced into producing heirs.
The carriage suddenly came to a halt, but since the curtains were closed, you couldn’t peek outside. Based on the coachman’s muffled conversation from outside, you had a feeling that you were about to go through the gates of Medicalia’s royal court as it was around time you arrived.
A few minutes later, the carriage stopped again, but this time, there was a thud as the coachman got off the carriage and opened the door. He reached his hand out to help you down before doing the same for the servant girl they sent with you.
“They have sent word that we arrived, so they will be here soon to guide you to your… new home,” the elderly man laughed nervously after he stumbled upon the word. Indeed, what could he call it? Home? Runaway hideout? Prison?
You could feel the curious eyes on you as you stood there with the coachman and the servant girl in front of the carriage with your kingdom’s symbol painted over it, waiting for someone to show you to your place. Even though it was kept secret why you were coming here in the first place, you knew that these things didn’t stay a secret for long - at least, not in your kingdom.
“Is she the princess from Animalia?”
“She looks younger than I thought.”
“Is it true that she nearly killed a prince?”
You looked the woman in the eye who asked the last question, and she immediately sealed her lips, grabbing the arm of the woman beside her and turning around to go in the opposite direction. Your gaze didn’t waver, you looked straight into the wandering eyes of the strangers - court ladies, soldiers and servants passing by - with your chin up high. You only seemed weak when you let it show, and you didn’t let it show.
Most, if not all, people looked away when you caught their eyes, and it was almost amusing how they scampered away when they realised that you heard them. So naive of them to assume that you shut not just your ears but your eyes to the rumours around you.
There was one particular boy - a young man probably around your age - who stopped dead in his tracks when he caught sight of you, squinting his eyes at you. You looked back at him, taking in the messy midnight locks that stuck to his forehead, his sharp jawline that was in contrast to the bright, gentle edge to his almond-shaped eyes, his plump lips that failed to curl into a disapproving line like most people’s who caught your eyes. He wore a burgundy-black tunic that seemed to match the ones others were wearing around you, but it seemed more practical with its bat-wing sleeves than elegant, so you had a feeling that he wasn’t of royalty.
You tilted your head, still keeping the eye-contact, and that’s when he looked away as if he was suddenly reminded of why he was passing by, and started running again. You furrowed your eyebrows in question. What was that about?
You shook your head as a court lady came up to you to assist you with your baggage and show you to your place. You had a medium-sized room to yourself in the court with a bathroom attached to it, the rooms on your end still unoccupied and waiting for possible future guests, except for the one that they reserved for the servant girl who came with you. You were told that the Queen would welcome you the following day, and the same court lady who escorted you would bring you breakfast, lunch and dinner from the royal court kitchen, you wouldn’t need to fetch it yourself.
You thanked the young woman with a bow and a polite smile, and you saw surprise flash across her orbs as she let you settle into your new room. You didn’t ponder over the change in her expression for long, you were used to it after all. The cautious glances in your direction, the nasty gossip behind your back, and the sugarcoated words to coax you into a favour.
Too bad you weren’t one to play the dumb and ignore it all, you stood up for yourself, but that’s exactly what your parents disapproved of, that’s exactly why you were here.
Tumblr media
Days passed by, and you seemed to fall into a routine in the meantime. In the morning, you would go for a walk in the garden of the royal court, sitting by the pond as the sun rose on the horizon, breaking the plain surface of the water into many different colours of ripe orange, rose-gold and wild apple-red. The court was tranquil at this time around, and that’s exactly what you needed. Apart from the kitchen staff who woke up early to prepare breakfast, others weren’t up around this time, so you didn’t need to bear more curious glances and more nasty accusations.
After your morning stroll, you would head back to your room, have breakfast, then read until lunchtime. Afternoon was served for whatever purpose the palace had for you: the day after you arrived, you met the Queen, after that, you met Princess Jinhee, on the third day, you were shown to the library of the court (a smaller version of what the royal family had at the palace, but nevertheless as impressive), and today, you were on your way to meet with the ladies who took care of handiwork including embroidery, sewing and tailoring.
The Queen said that these first few days will be about showing you around the court, so you knew whom to ask in need of assistance, and so that the court members could become familiar with you. You didn’t ask whether it was to dissuade their gossip or not, but you didn’t need to know that. After all, it was a wise suggestion on her part, and it wasn’t something you had complaints about. Here, you could freely roam around (with your servants following you if needed), you could spend time reading and painting in your room, and no one would ask you why. Here, you could bathe and clean yourself, you could choose and put on your clothes yourself, you didn’t need others to do it for you. Here, you could eat whatever they offered you, your meals didn’t go through your mother’s restricting wishes.
This day too, you were followed by Huisoo - the servant girl who came from Animalia with you - and Sieun showed the way - the servant girl who was appointed to you in Medicalia - as always, but as you turned a corner, the young man with the squinted eyes from last time halted beside you, his mouth forming a big ‘O’ as he caught sight of you.
“Are you the princess from Animalia?” He asked enthusiastically, and if you didn’t know any better, you would assume that he had heard only good things about you before.
When you nodded, still cautiously watching out for the change in his body language, his lips curled into a smile, the kind that made his eyes disappear. Then, he put his hands on his abdomen before bowing in a 90 degree angle towards you.
“My name is Lee Byounggon. I work as a magical medic for the royal family, so if you need any assistance magical medicine-wise, do not hesitate to ask for me,” he introduced himself when he straightened his back, the smile not fading from his lips. Despite his otherwise sharp and cold features from the day you had gotten here, he seemed gentle and warm now. The way he approached you also showed that he wasn’t one of those court members who passed by you as quickly as possible, he introduced himself head-on. He was the first one to do so which made you question:
“Aren’t you scared of me? You must have heard the rumours.”
Byounggon either didn’t seem fazed by your question or he was prepared for it because his facial expressions didn’t change. He was also really easy to read, something that you had not been so used to since so many in the royal circles put on facades to hide behind including you.
“You know… I have a special ability,” the magical medic took one tiny step towards you as if he was about to tell a secret. “I can see into people’s souls through their eyes,” he added with a smile, but you merely rolled your eyes. Even though you were not born and raised here, you knew that such magic didn’t exist here or anywhere else for that matter.
Byounggon also sensed that you didn’t believe him in the slightest because he burst into laughter in the next second, and only when he composed himself, did he continue.
“I’m just kidding, but really… you don’t look like you wanted to hurt that prince, not on purpose for sure,” he explained rather candidly, and you didn’t feel like he was lying. Lies could be covered up with smiles, laughs, sarcasm, diverting the topic or simply escaping the situation, but he… he didn’t look like he was telling a fib.
“You don’t know anything about me,” you pointed out rather coldly nevertheless, your tone intended to lash out at him.
“That’s exactly why I don’t believe the rumours. Why should I judge you when I don’t know you?”
You weren’t one to get surprised, but this did take you aback. The way he said it so unwaveringly was new, unfamiliar. You weren’t used to it, especially not after what had happened to Prince Sangdo. Byounggon didn’t seem like he had ulterior motives to be trusting you like that, but you couldn’t let your guard down over one supportive line.
So you excused yourself, explaining to the magical medic that you were on your way to the handiwork ladies, and told the servants that you could go on. The young man seemed saddened by your sudden announcement, but he did let you go, waving in your way as you were walking away from him.

You were sitting by the pond as always, watching the sunrise a few days later. It would be another day you spent away from Animalia, and you had this pang in your chest that you couldn’t explain. You didn’t miss how you used to live in that palace, you didn’t miss the bravado you had to put on to seem like an obedient, perfect little daughter, you didn’t miss the way you were mocked for not having magic in your veins when both your parents - your mother could tame fire because she was from Elementalia and your father could talk to animals because he was from Animalia - and your sister did. Until the day your magic had surfaced, at least. Afterwards, you were a curse, the mistake in the carefully crafted plans, the wrong in all the rights and the flaw in the flawless family.
You didn’t miss any of it, and yet… you couldn’t quite get used to the freedom that you had here. Despite the fact that you were in exile, you didn’t feel like a prisoner here. Sure, you weren’t invited to Prince Jinyoung and Princess Yunkyeong’s wedding because so many other royal families would be there, and it was your parents’ wish not to be seen at such events, but otherwise, you could be free. You were no one special here, and you liked it that way.
“Oh, I see someone else is also an early riser!”
A cheerful voice disrupted your silent pondering, and you snapped your head back at the sudden visitor. You let out a sigh when you locked eyes with the not so unfamiliar stranger, and turned back to the pond in front of you instead.
“You must have been deep in thought, you didn’t even see me walking towards you,” Byounggon continued despite your attempt at ignoring him, and he only halted when he reached you. You could feel his gaze on you, curious yet tentative, but you didn’t respond to it, you continued looking ahead.
“I was, and it’s because I’ve never met anyone here at this time of the day before.”
“Well, consider yourself lucky today,” the medic blabbered cheerily, and without thinking twice, he sat down on the bench beside you. When you finally looked at him - deeming his action rather brazen -, he was already looking at you, and when you locked eyes, he flashed you a dimpled smile. Why he was grinning at someone like you - a princess from a far away kingdom with a bad reputation, someone who had supposedly almost killed her husband-to-be - was beyond you. Did he have no care in the world? Did he have no fear? Was he merely naive?
“Are you that bored, or are you just set on annoying me?”
“Annoying you?” Byounggon’s smile faltered, his bright features darkening. He looked so hurt suddenly, you almost felt bad for implying something like that. “Am I really annoying you?” He inquired, blinking rapidly with his ocean-deep, jet-black orbs, swimming in genuine care. When you looked him in the eye, you felt like looking into something rare, something precious: like a gemstone containing unknown magic, hidden away from the world for its power. And you… you were probably the last person who was worthy of seeing such a treasure.
You cleared your throat and averted your eyes to the pond, unable to bear his gaze any longer.
“I’m not used to company around here, and I didn’t expect anyone today either,” you blurted out honestly, feeling exposed for what your words might indicate. Maybe the magical medic also felt the weight of it for he seemed compromising instead of butthurt or overly nosy.
“Well, I can leave if you want me to,” he suggested right away, and he got to his feet even before you could tell him to stop. However, when you did confess that he didn’t have to leave, you could feel the grin spreading on his face even without turning his way. Gosh, why did he have to smile so brightly all the time? It was so… unusual for you.
Instead, you asked him to tell you something that he felt like sharing. Like an arrow that was fired, the boy’s words came on suddenly and flew like a river. He didn’t seem to be able to stop from the moment he started talking about his best friend, Seunghun, who was a soldier here, and with whom he had a special connection. When he said that it was a secret why, you rolled your eyes, assuming that he was joking yet again.
However, after he shared with you that he had actually saved Seunghun’s life, you thought that maybe he wasn’t lying about it. Seunghun’s parents had died when their house had caught on fire, and he would have died with them too, but Byounggon - who had been a little boy back then just like Seunghun himself and who had been living close to Seunghun’s home - had noticed the fire and dragged the boy out while risking his own life. His magic had barely resurfaced before the incident, but it had come out in full-force while he had been trying to save Seunghun’s life.
Then, Seunghun ended up at the palace with Byounggon and Byounggon’s father - who was a magical medic himself -, and they had been friends ever since. The two of them with Prince Jinyoung used to play hide and seek in this very garden before, and while he was talking about his childhood days, his eyes twinkled in a different light.
“Have you had friends like that, too?” He posed the question in his good-willed innocence when you were at the topic, but you could merely scoff.
“No. I had no friends at the palace. I couldn’t even consider my sister my friend even though she is only two years older than me,” you confessed, your words loaded with bitter poison. You had always been pitted against each other with your sister, and even though you had tried to make her see you as more than just an enemy, your sister had never let you. So gone was the naive little girl who had believed that she could make everything right if she had given her share of the cake to her sister or to give her the brand new doll you had gotten for your birthday, and it was replaced with the girl who was too mature and wise for her age, nevertheless all too pessimistic.
“It must have been lonely,” Byounggon broke the silence suddenly, shattering your flashbacks into tiny little pieces. Reality struck you hard, his words even more so, and for a moment, you felt like you were about to cry. So you pressed your lips tight and dug your nails into your skin, holding it in.
The medic might have sensed your discomfort or he merely wanted to fill the silence. Nevertheless, he started talking about the upcoming Festival of Day and Light to change the subject, the usual yearly festival for the fall equinox, and why it was special for them. Supposedly, they commemorated the gift of light while also appreciating the fact that darkness was needed for light to exist, so they lit candles while thinking of their loved ones, wishing them a bright year. The best way to light candles was to put them in lanterns and to place them on the little boats that were waiting for them by the riverside, and to watch them float away.
“You should definitely come celebrate it with us. There’s always a fun celebration outside of the court, and there are all kinds of delicacies and music and…”
“Why would I go? It’s not my tradition to celebrate,” you cut off his enthusiastic chatter, but he just shrugged his shoulders, his casual way of handling your harsh words resurfacing yet again.
“I wasn’t notified that the fall equinox was created just for our kingdom,” he counter-attacked playfully, and even though you were about to open your mouth to go against him, you realised that you couldn’t. He was right.
Hence, you bit your tongue, and didn’t say anything, just let him talk about whatever came to his mind until you were called for breakfast by Huisoo who seemed quite surprised to see you talking to the medic by the pond. What could you say though? You were surprised, too.
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, when you finally managed to fall asleep after tossing and turning in bed for hours, shivers running up and down your spine, you dreamed of a fire.
You were standing inside the fire, the flames dancing around you, and whenever you tried to move, they followed you as if they were your shadow. You looked left and right when you heard a cry on the other side of the fire, and even though you should have felt scorching hot, you could only feel icy numbness taking hold of your legs, unable to move. The cry grew louder and louder until you had to put your hands on your ears to block the frantic sound out. Then, someone called your name, and when you tried to block it out too, invisible arms started shaking you. You fought back, tears pricking your ears, but the arms just wouldn’t let go.
Your eyes bolted open at that moment, but you didn’t feel any better. In fact, you felt even hotter than in that fire, and when you looked at the figure standing above you, his arms holding onto your shoulders, you realised that the part about being shaken must have been real. So had been the part about someone calling your name.
“Princess Y/N, it’s me. Huisoo told me that you weren’t feeling well last night, and you didn’t show up at the pond today, so I came by to see if I could help,” Byounggon explained slowly, gently, as if talking to a child. Then, when he caught sight of you staring at his arms on your shoulder, he let go of you, albeit a bit embarrassed.
You just blinked at him, trying to focus on his face instead of letting the nightmares take hold of you again, but it was difficult when all you wanted to do was to close your eyes and lie in bed. Your head was throbbing, your whole body was quivering, and the last thing you wanted to do was to have a conversation with Byounggon even though he seemed genuinely concerned about you.
“Where does it hurt? How long have you been having a fever?” He asked seriously once you regained more consciousness, and even though you were reluctant to tell him because you didn’t want his help, you were too run down to care.
So you told him that your joints had been hurting since last night, just before dinner, and you had a fever since midnight or dawn, you couldn’t tell because you had been drifting out of dreams (or more like nightmares) for the most part. Byounggon insisted on helping you after hearing about your symptoms, but you declined, saying that you had been used to dealing with such things on your own in your kingdom.
“Does it mean that I have to watch you suffer just because that’s what you’ve been used to?” The medic exclaimed, rather desperate, and even though you knew all too well what he was referring to, you couldn’t help but feel exposed. Wasn’t that what you were doing now? Suffering on your own, like the strong daughter and the perfect princess you had needed to become, just because you had never been treated otherwise? Because you could never show any sign of weakness, let alone accept someone’s assistance when they were willingly giving it to you?
“Fine. Do as you wish,” you gave in after defeating the voices in your head telling you not to let him help you. You were so tired, your body felt like it was twice its weight, and your eyes were heavy with sleep and the last remains of the terrifying nightmare you had, the last thing you felt like doing was arguing.
Byounggon immediately broke into a relieved smile, and as he was getting ready, he started talking about what he was about to do. Supposedly, one’s centre of energy was around their abdomen, so he needed to put his hand on your stomach to be able to heal your energy centre. If you had been in your right mind, you would have probably backed down on your word at this part, but you were still half-conscious, so you didn’t care, even when he touched you. He touched you so gently though, you could barely feel his featherlike touch.
He closed his eyes while he was working with his magic on healing you, and his lips sometimes twitched, probably from concentration. May it be because of his magic working or because you could look at him more closely like this as he was crouching down by your mattress, but you realised that there were dark circles under his eyes. You were reminded of what Sieun had told you a few days ago, that the magical medic had asked her about your daily schedule, especially about when you usually went to the pond. Sieun had told you that she didn’t know why he was asking, but you had a feeling why.
Byounggon must have been waking up earlier to talk with you by the pond, and the fact that he got worried because you had not been there this morning as you had done so for the past two weeks made you feel delirious, as if he was a poison you had a sweet taste of, but you couldn’t let yourself have more.
“It’s done,” the medic announced, dragging you out of your thoughts, and as your head cleared, you realised that your body felt light again. You put your hand to your forehead, but it didn’t feel hot. You pushed yourself up to a sitting position, and indeed, you didn’t feel feverish anymore. It was as if you had just woken from a good night’s sleep.
“Wow, princess, take it easy! You should still rest, you don’t want this illness to come back,” he advised, eyebrows furrowed in worry, and now that you had the energy to smile, you directed a friendly one at him.
“It’s alright. I feel good thanks to you,” you pointed out, and you saw how he tried to hide the grin that was creeping onto his lips. He failed though, alongside the pink that was tinting his cheeks, and the way he needed to clear his throat before he spoke up again.
“Well, it was nothing, really,” he shrugged off your compliment, averting his eyes elsewhere but your face. You were about to ask him to tell you how his magic worked when he caught sight of your paintings, the canvases resting by the wall.
“Did you paint them?” He inquired, a pure kind of curiosity lighting up in his eyes, and you didn’t have the heart to lie to him. So you told him the truth: that it was you, and that you had been painting for some time though your mother had never approved of it since she didn’t deem it appropriate for a princess who should have been learning how to engage in polite conversations and seducing princes instead of doing art.
“Seducing princes? Do you really learn that?” Byounggon asked, rather surprised, but there was a playful smile hiding in the corner of his lips. It seemed that even the medic himself couldn’t decide how much to believe your words.
“Well, she wanted me to. We had books on them in the library, and there was a teacher giving lessons on courting, but he only succeeded in teaching my sister. I made him give up after two lessons,” you shrugged your shoulders nonchalantly.
“Wow, you are so…”
“So?” You quirked an eyebrow challengingly when he seemed to search for the right words. Usually, when you gave people this look, they backtracked, and started babbling or changed the topic, but the medic didn’t.
“Admirable,” he decided on it a few seconds later, and your features softened. It was as if someone had offered you some quiet after the cacophony of the royal events you were forced to attend: you felt comforted, and your heavy heart felt a bit less tight. “I applaud you for how you speak your mind. I find it refreshing.”
You found his approachable personality refreshing too, but you couldn’t tell him that. After all, what good could that lead to? You had already let down your walls around him enough times, you were afraid that if he kept going, he would see behind that admirable facade, and see you as you were: terrified of history repeating itself and being far from perfect when it came to reciprocating other’s kindness. You didn’t deserve his care, you didn’t deserve his kindness.
Instead of commenting on his words, you asked if he had any duties he needed to attend to, and now that you reminded him, he realised that he should go to the palace indeed. However, before he could leave, you thanked him for healing you, and if anything, he gifted you with the widest smile you had seen on him.
“Anytime.”
Coming from him, accompanied by the comet of affection travelling through the galaxy of his jet-black orbs, somehow, you didn’t want to question the sincerity of his words.

The court was in a frenzy because of the upcoming wedding, but those who had some spare time still decided to go to the yearly Festival of Day and Light. You had contemplated not going, but when you asked Sieun about the festival, her whole face lit up, and you had a feeling that she would want to go.
So you told Sieun and Huisoo that you would head out to check out the festivities, but they could go their separate ways afterwards if they wanted to. The girls both objected fervently, but it was only until Huisoo was ever so obviously swept up by a handsome young man with shoulder-length hair at a flower stall, and the other met someone she had known before because then, both of them excused themselves. Which left you alone with the sugarcoated apple in your hand that you had bought for yourself - and one for either servant girl -, strolling around the main market square where the festival took place.
There were all kinds of games for kids who ran around without a care in the world while their parents were running after them or cheering them on. Beside the games, stalls of delicacies - ranging from sugared fruit to freshly-baked bread and dried figs coated in cinnamon - were lined up like tiny little stars dotted on the canvas of cobblestones. Beside the riverside, people either lit up candles or placed them on the little boats that waited by the sides just like Byounggon had told you so. The whole festival was full of cheers, laughter and life, topped by white and yellow decorations in the shape of the Sun, the Moon and the stars.
Despite being an outsider, you could feel the kingdom pulsing with the energy of its people, bright and cheerful. When you had been living in Animalia, you had visited the festivities outside of the palace maybe once or twice as a kid, so to be able to see how ordinary people celebrated such a meaningful time here warmed your heart. Suddenly, you felt like you were being surrounded by a community instead of being left alone in the vastness of the icy, jarring unknown.
Maybe it was because of the sentiment or because of the eager ladies by the riverside handing out candles, but you found yourself lighting up one of them when you found a part of the riverside that wasn’t as crowded as others.
“You do know that you need to make a wish when you light a candle. Otherwise, it will be pretty but less meaningful,” a familiar voice spoke up from behind you, and you hid the smile that was creeping onto your lips with a frown.
“You do know that you seem to spend an awful lot of time with me these days,” you pointed out when Byounggon halted beside you, and flashed you a wide smile, the kind that turned his eyes into little crescents resembling the moon above you.
“I am just keeping an eye on you. I wouldn’t want a princess to be sick again or to be sick of boredom,” he retorted cheekily, and you bit your cheek to not smile back at him as brightly as you could. He kept his eyes on you, and the way the moonlight reflected in his orbs and cupped his features in a magnificent halo mesmerised you for a moment. He didn’t need light to shine, he was so bright, so full of life either way, but under the crafted lines of the moon, you wondered what it would be like to make a painting of him one day - and whether you could capture his features as gracefully as your eyes did now.
Byounggon did develop a habit of accompanying you on your morning stroll. Sometimes he was early, more often he was late, but he did show up every day without fail. When you questioned if he had nothing better to do, he said no, and that he was actually looking for company for his morning walks, too. If you hadn’t heard from Sieun that the medic had specifically asked her about your morning visits to the court garden, you might have believed him, but since the servant girl’s remark, you couldn’t have fought the seed of hope that was blooming in your chest.
You let him join you, and you let him talk. You got to know all kinds of stories regarding court life here, and childhood stories of his soldier friend, Seunghun, and Prince Jinyoung, more or less funny ones that cracked up the medic, too. You also got to know about current affairs of the kingdom, and how Prince Jinyoung’s heart was someone else’s, but he couldn’t love her fully because he was going to marry a princess for a favourable trade deal. When you inquired if the wedding could be called off because of the prince’s feelings, Byounggon shook his head, a bitter smile tinting his lips - something that you had ever so scarcely seen on him. You hadn’t been in Prince Jinyoung’s shoes because you had never wanted to sacrifice an arranged marriage for a genuine love, but you could understand why it was difficult for him to marry for convenience.
You liked when Byounggon was talking because you could get to know about how things worked in the kingdom, but you could also get to know about him and his (adorably) gullible personality and his (precious) big heart. Once you realised that his intentions were truly pure, you let yourself be comfortable around him, including this day.
“So you came here to make a wish?” You quirked an eyebrow when you caught sight of a candle in his hands. The medic let out a deep, joyous laughter before answering.
“Well, I came here because I saw you, but yes, I also have a wish,” he flashed you a wide grin, and as he crouched down to put his candle into a lantern, you couldn’t help but ask:
“What are you wishing for?”
“It’s a secret,” he winked at you playfully. If he had been someone else, you would have probably felt offended by the gesture. However, it was him, and you knew him well enough by now, so you merely rolled your eyes at his antics.
“Fine. I won’t tell you mine either,” you retorted with a huff as you followed suit, and lit your own candle. He helped you put yours into a lantern, and placed them beside his own on a nearby boat. You waited a few minutes until the boat was filled up with lanterns and a man pushed the boat off the railing to let it float, to let it get further away from you while you were making a wish.
You watched it go with a sentimental smile, thinking of how much had changed in the last few months, so that you could be a part of a festival like this and wish to have many more moments like this - when you forgot about who you were, and let yourself be, let yourself rest after carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.
“You seem to be happy now,” Byounggon remarked gently, quietly, no hint of playfulness in his voice after a few moments of utter silence. You looked at him, humming a yes, and let out a long sigh. When you inhaled, it felt like breathing in a whole new flavour of air.
“Is it because of me?”
Now Byounggon was teasing, his lips quirked up, but you had a feeling that he was doing it on purpose because he was way too pleased with himself when you laughed at the sudden change of the mood.
“Do you think it’s because of you?” You asked back, equally as curious as challenging. You knew that the medic would answer no matter your tone because he always did, and you liked that about him: that he was willing to speak his mind, even if it meant that he embarrassed himself because of his silly antics or that he made your heart flutter with a genuine compliment of his.
“I would like to think that, at least partly, it’s because of me,” Byounggon played along, theatrically placing a hand above his heart. He tried to remain serious, his features unwavering, but his lips twitched slightly, and his whole demeanour changed when he heard music coming from the main market square. They started playing a song - unknown to you, of course - on the drums and there was probably a little bit of guitar as well, and some instrument that you couldn’t quite put a finger on. Byounggon’s face immediately lit up hearing the melody, and it only took a few seconds until he bolted off, exclaiming that you should join him dancing while he was running off.
You followed him swiftly, and watched as he joined the circle of people who started dancing to the music. There were older people, younger ones, even little children, men and women alike, and the different colour and design of their clothes indicated that they were from different classes. You caught sight of Huisoo and the pretty boy from the flower stall in the crowd, and something in you twisted when you looked at them - so carefree, so joyful, so present in the given moment.
Then, Byounggon suddenly showed up by your side, and reached his hand out to you when the music stopped. You looked down at the boy’s hand, then up at him, into his almond-shaped eyes, and your first instinct was to shake your head and tell him no. The medic’s smile didn’t falter despite your hesitation, and maybe that’s what prompted you to take his hand and join him.
No one threw you a nasty glance, no one judged you for being there, no one cared, and honestly, that was the most reassured you felt for a long time. With your hand in Byounggon’s and in a little girl’s on your other side, you followed their lead and mimicked their dance moves. One after another, one after another, and then you lost count of the steps as you got swept up in the stomping footsteps and the echoing melodies.
You didn’t know how much time passed by - it could have been minutes or hours, you couldn’t tell -, but when the dance was over, and Byounggon inquired if you wanted to head back to the court together, you immediately said yes. It was only after a few seconds that you realised that the medic still didn’t let go of your hand, and you watched him take it away with a coy smile and a scratch of his neck.
And that’s when you realised that he was actually right: that he was a part of why you were happy here.
Tumblr media
Prince Jinyoung and Princess Yunkyoung’s wedding took place as planned, and since Sieun was obligated to join because she was a part of the royal court here, you told Huisoo that she could spend this day however she wanted, you would be fine on your own. You didn’t like asking them for favours either way; since your mother’s watching eyes weren’t on you, you enjoyed that you could cater for yourself, and didn’t require their services as much. Both girls objected at first, saying that you were too generous, that’s why you started asking them to accompany you when they could break free from their role a bit - like at the festival when they could join the crowd or when you started going to the court kitchen to eat together with others instead of having your meals delivered to your room -, and you had a feeling that Huisoo would take the opportunity to meet up with the pretty flower stall boy from the festival.
That left you with much free time on your hands, preferably spent alone in your room, so you couldn’t bump into your mother who would attend the wedding and be reprimanded for being in the public’s eye. You spent the morning working on a painting of the riverside on the day of the festival, illuminated by the mysterious moon, and you spent the afternoon reading a book on the many magical creatures of the kingdom. You did have quite a few of them at Animalia too, but Medicalia boosted a high number of creatures that you had only heard of before, yet never seen them - such as phoenixes, kitsunes and caladriuses which supposedly had healing powers.
You were in the middle of reading a chapter about phoenixes when you heard a knock on your door. Expecting it to be one of the servants, you told them that they could come inside, but the knocking persisted. Hence, you rose to your feet from your crouching posture, and stepped up to the door to open it. Your heart skipped a beat when you saw who was behind it.
“Mother!” You breathed out in shock, not expecting her to pay a visit to you after the wedding ceremony. She was all dolled up for the event, but the evident frown on her face ruined the innocence of the swan-white outfit she put on.
She walked into the room with much disgust in her eyes, and only after you closed the door, did she turn around to face you. You could already tell that she was frustrated, her feelings shown in the tight lines of her lips and the way she squinted her eyes at you. Not to mention her thundering voice when she spoke up.
“Didn’t I tell you not to cause trouble here? Didn’t I specifically ask you to not use your powers here?” She spat the questions like venom, her words sending a bullet through your heart one after another.
“I do not understand, Mother,” you answered, your heart wrenching at the thought that she could assume something like this when you had nothing to be ashamed of. You had not caused any trouble here, and you had never used your powers ever since you had entered Animalia. Even though it had been tempting because you had wanted to see what you could do with it if you had put effort into practising, but you had to bury the thought as soon as it was born.
“Oh, come on, you’re not a child anymore! Don’t play the innocent kid with me,” your mother striked again, and took a step closer to you, looking straight into your eyes when she continued. “There was a fire a few days ago in the palace’s kitchen. I’ve heard that they haven’t found what caused it yet, though it could have been simply out of negligence. With you being here, I don’t think it was accidental.”
For a moment, you had no idea what to say. Then, you felt your blood rise as you balled your hands into fists. Just how could she assume something like that on her own when you were totally innocent? Just how low could she stoop to make you play the bad guy when the fire in your room at the Animalia palace wouldn’t have broken out if it hadn’t been for Prince Sangdo’s lack of manners? Not to mention who was to blame for your powers? Wasn’t it your mother who came from Elementalia and had the power to tame fire?
“Do you really think I visit the palace each and every day, just to burn something there? Do you really think of me so lowly? I have not even set foot in the palace for a month, let alone create a fire in the kitchen, but if you want to blame someone, sure, blame me. That does not mean I am guilty,” you objected fervently, but before she could open her mouth to say something more, you continued. “I wish you would have made a scene like this when Prince Sangdo had come into my room and grabbed my wrist when I had asked him not to touch me that night. If I was guilty then, you would have had your reason to blame it on me now. But I was innocent and I am innocent now, it is only your perception of me that always makes me the bad one in your eyes. The child that does not sit back and watch injustice without speaking up about it, the daughter that would choose painting over marrying a prince, and the girl who did not seem to inherit your powers until she did, and then, you wished she hadn’t.”
Your words flew like the river during a storm - waves crushing violently, heavy winds catching the surface ever so indignantly -, and it felt like there was a thunderstorm in your heart. You wanted to fight, to punch the walls, to knock over the shelves around you - anything to make your mother go away, alas, you could only fight back with your words, and they even didn’t seem to reach her. If anything, they made her even angrier, no sign of remorse in her eyes.
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that! A princess knows where to draw the line, but you… you are out of your mind, and being away from Animalia didn’t seem to help either. And I thought-”
Your mother’s words were interrupted by a few rhythmic knocks on the door, and you both snapped your head towards the sound.
“Princess Y/N, it’s time for your lesson,” a familiar voice called, and despite the fact that you had no lesson, let alone with him, you didn’t want to object. Your mother didn’t seem to think it through either, instead, she let out an offended huff and murmured into your ears before leaving:
“Don’t think that you can come back anytime soon with that attitude.”
You gulped down the knot in your throat as you watched her leave, and turned around to be with your back to the door, so that Byounggon wouldn’t see the way your hands were shaking when he came inside your room. You heard him close the door behind him, and fumble with something before he dared to ask:
“Are you okay?”
“How much did you hear?” You retorted back, standing by the walls with your back to him. You tried your best to hold back your tears, but you weren’t sure that you were doing a good job because you could feel your eyes watering despite your best efforts.
“Uhmm… I think everything,” Byounggon admitted after a long pause. You closed your eyes for a moment, the first teardrop rolling down your cheeks, leaving a cold streak behind on your warm cheeks. “I saw your mother leaving the ceremony, and I had a feeling that she would come to you, but I wasn’t sure. So I followed her here. I know it sounds very bad, but I was afraid that she would… do something to upset you or hurt you because you told me that she was the one who wanted to send you away, and I don’t know what exactly happened, at least I didn’t know until now, but I knew you didn’t deserve it, and it really seems you didn’t. And I just… I wanted to protect you from her. I’m sorry I was late,” he rambled incredibly fast, and the more he talked, the more heavily your tears were following.
You couldn’t understand how someone who had never met you could trust you and believe in your innocence even before you had met for the first time. On the contrary, your mother had blamed you for everything, and she had known the full story. How could someone be so pure to you? How could Byounggon care about you so genuinely, so selflessly? He didn’t have anything to gain from caring about you, yet he did so, and it just broke your heart even more.
You heard the medic take a few steps towards you, and when he halted beside you in a safe distance, he immediately caught sight of your silent sobbing. You looked at him from behind the curtain of your tears, watching how he was trying to gesture with his hands, but was unable to decide what to do. So you decided instead of Byounggon himself, and stepped up to him to embrace him.
“Thank you,” you croaked out, your voice coming out a lot more strained and fragile than you wanted to.
You could feel him loosen up, and slowly, gently, he put his arms around your frame, patting your back while you cried against his chest. He was warm, he was warmth itself, and you wanted to get lost in his touch, in his arms, in his voice.
“It’s okay. You can cry with me,” he murmured into your hair, his voice rid of any playfulness or teasing.
Tears like pearls fell onto the silk of his shirt, leaving behind more than just wet stains - leaving behind the last walls that you had been keeping up around yourself to protect yourself, all crumbled down now, and the stories he had never heard before, neither had you shared with anyone else since leaving your kingdom.
Tumblr media
The following days, you were cautious about meeting Byounggon, secretly terrified that he would see you as a horrible person, that he wouldn’t understand your pain, and you would end up feeling lonelier than ever before. You had never opened up to someone like on the day of the wedding, and you were afraid that you would need to rebuild your walls, and never let anyone in, ever again.
On the other hand, Byounggon acted the same way, if not more protective over you. He highlighted how much people liked you here in the court, especially since the festival when you had gone out to celebrate with ordinary people, and how your own kingdom didn’t deserve you if they turned their back on you when you had wanted to protect yourself. What’s more, he pointed out that he would have been delighted to meet someone like you when he had been a child because taming fire would have meant that you could have helped save Seunghun’s parents when he had managed to save Seunghun only. Sure, power might come with great responsibility, but it wasn’t your fault that your power had surfaced at a time like that. It merely showed that you had been desperate back then, and no one had paid attention to that part of the story, they had been too quick to send you away.
You felt yourself becoming softer and softer towards the medic afterwards because he was everything you had never had the chance to have - the shoulder to cry on, the one who understood your body language even when words failed you, the boy who always asked for your permission when he wanted to come closer to you or hold your hand, and the one who would fight for you through thick and thin. You had never met a more considerate, more gentle soul, and even his goofy self was endearing to you.
Even when he claimed that he didn’t steal a flower (that allegedly resembled you in his eyes) from the court garden (“because it wasn’t considered stealing if he was on good terms with the gardeners”); even when he managed to fall into the pond when he got scared by a bee during one of your morning strolls, and even when he ran all the way from the palace to you because he thought that you were the one who came down with something in the court, sweating bucks because running wasn’t his forte, your feelings towards him grew stronger and stronger.
Not to mention the time he shared with you the secret he had been keeping about his friend, Seunghun. When he had first talked about the soldier, you had assumed that he had been joking when he had claimed that the reason their relationship was special was a secret. However, when he let you know that by saving Seunghun, he managed to keep him alive as a phoenix, it all made more sense. You could also understand why he was keeping it a secret because phoenixes didn’t have human forms, at least not ones that the books knew of.
You knew the part of the story that Seunghun’s parents had died when their house had caught on fire, and he would have died with them too, but Byounggon had noticed the fire and dragged the boy out while risking his own life. His magic had barely resurfaced back then, but it had come out in full-force as he had been trying to save Seunghun’s life. Since he hadn’t known at first just how much he could have helped the almost burned boy, he had also applied fireflower on his wounds - the flower that was born after fires, so interestingly so, it was almost like a phoenix, born after turning to ashes.
In a way, Byounggon tied himself to Seunghun by saving him because his magic continued to live inside his friend’s body, and whenever the soldier was hurt, it was only Byounggon who could heal him completely. At least, until Seunghun was saved by a girl, and her magic saved him just like the medic’s magic had saved him when they had been young. Ever since then, their magical bond might have faded, but their friendship stayed the same.
You even met the so-called soldier friend and his girlfriend at the court, and after a while, it became a habit of yours to have dinner with them alongside Huisoo, Sieun and the medic himself. You felt light whenever you were around them, that’s why you didn’t take it to heart when they started teasing you or Byounggon who was clumsily trying to get closer to you. Bit by bit, you let him get closer, but you needed to be the one to take the final step nevertheless.
“Byounggon, we need to talk,” you told him one morning, sitting by the pond while the sun was just rising on the horizon.
“T-talk?” He stuttered, extremely nervous for someone who was usually so chatty, but maybe he sensed the serious edge to your words, and he was scared by what was to come.
All was well though, so he was scared for nothing. Your parents had previously sent a letter to the royal family of Medicalia, telling them to take care of you for at least a year more until your sister could settle down with her husband, and you had a feeling that meant that you would never be welcomed in Animalia again. Hence, you had the permission to stay here longer, and you tried to be useful by applying to become an arts teacher in the court. You had your first lessons with the cousins of Prince Jinyoung and Princess Jinhee not too long ago, and it proved to be a success, so that was taken care of.
Nevertheless, you had a feeling that the boy might have thought that you would need to go back to Animalia or worse, marry a prince from a far-away kingdom. Thankfully, neither of them were likely to happen anytime soon, but it warmed your heart how worried he got.
“Yes. I want to talk about you and me,” you broke it down to him, but if anything, that just made him appear more appalled. He visibly gulped, but his eyes were still on you, intent and curious.
“Suuure. Go ahead,” he prompted semi-confidently, and you reached out to put your hand on his, to soothe his nerves. You could tell that it had its effect on him because his lips immediately curved upwards, and he squeezed your hand to hold onto you more tightly.
“I want to thank you for waiting for me,” you started sincerely, but the talkative person he was, he couldn’t help himself, but to interrupt you.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I? I’m not like that horrible prince who deserves the absolute worst, he deserves to-” He started getting riled up again, something that he always did when you mentioned some injustice you had encountered at the Animalia palace or he thought of Prince Sangdo. You were sure that he wouldn’t be able to hold himself back if he were to ever encounter the said prince, but thankfully, there was little to no chance of that happening.
“I love you, Byounggon,” you announced, loud and proud, and the medic’s mouth stayed open, probably because he was in the middle of his monologue, but also because he was surprised by your sudden confession. Then, he closed his mouth, his features softening, and he immediately threw his arms around you.
“I love you, too. Gosh, I love you so much!” He shrieked excitedly like a little kid, and hugged you tighter than ever before. You smiled to yourself while he was holding you, amused (and bewitched) at the way he kept saying ‘I love you’ like he would never want to stop.
He couldn’t stop even when Sieun and Huisoo walked by, and they tried to sniffle their giggles while watching you two embrace each other in the middle of the blooming garden, bathed in the rays of the sunrise.
“I’ve told you he liked her when he asked about her morning strolls,” Huisoo told Sieun as they were heading towards the kitchen while the other girl just let out an amused laugh.
“Sure, Miss Matchmaker. What about your flower boy though? What was his name again? Leewoo? Leehan?” Sieun teased her and smacked the girl in the side, playful as ever.
“Ssshh,” Huisoo shushed her, pretending to stay nonchalant about the topic, but she couldn’t help a smile creeping onto her lips as she said: “Well, love might be in the air for everyone.”

Name: Sonia Nevermind
Nickname: Miss Nevermind (Shinobu), Bluebird (Wylan), Dark Queen/Madonna of Darkness/She-Cat (Gundham), Princess (everyone she encounters while not working who wants to get under her skin)
Gender: cis female
Romantic orientation: Sonia is not straight.
That's about as specific as she allows herself to get because regardless of how she identifies, Sonia is not allowed to have a public romantic relationship, much less marry, a woman. While Novoselic does allow gay marriage, adoption for gay couples, and gender-affirming rights and care, the country does not allow for members of the Royal Family to engage in public LGBTQ+ relationships or marriages. The aristocracy tends to follow suit and keeps relationships that aren't heterosexual as affairs, or they marry their partners after the death or divorce of their spouse (preferably after they've produced their offspring).
Additionally, Sonia grew up in a very sheltered lifestyle and wasn't really exposed to people who publicly identified as LGBTQ+ until she was a teenager. As a teen, she still believes she's heterosexual (mostly. Check out her threads with Shinobu to see how that's working out for her) and is an ally to her LGBTQ+ friends. As an adult, she's become more aware that she is indeed Not Straight but struggles with the reality of what being the next monarch entails: she has to produce a biological heir with her spouse in order to keep the monarchy going. So it's hard for her to even consider a relationship with a woman, knowing her responsibilities will eventually hurt her partner.
Her love life and eventual choice of spouse are always so much bigger than her own happiness: it will reflect on her family, the citizens, and the nation, too. It's hard for her to talk about with others, so she mostly copes in private.
Preferred pet names: She's amenable to many of them, as long as they aren't royal or hinting at an aristocratic title: princess, queen, duchess, etc. She will be the first to tell you that having a partner who 'treats you like a princess,' is a Bad Idea, Actually.
Relationship status: Depends on the verse. In all interactions, she's single until a ship is in development. In terms of active ships, I think she's only officially in a romantic relationship with Wylan/ @dcviated right now.
She's in a developing ship with Shinobu/ @quickdeaths, Gundham/ @the-ultimate-muses, Gundham/ @phantasmalnightmare, Ryuji/ @electricea, and I think Lupin/ @scarlxtleaves? All of her other ships haven't had active interactions for quite awhile so I think they're dormant for now.
I do like ships, but I write the most slow-burn of slow-burn romances so I appreciate the muns who enjoy that too! I have romantic ships I'd love to write for her but it's a matter of finding an active writing partner whose style works with mine and is writing a canon or OC muse that I think she'd both be attracted to and would be fun to explore.
Opinion on true love: Sonia wants to believe in it. She's more optimistic about it the younger she is. The older she is and the more romantic attraction and relationships she experiences, the more she's less sure about it. Or at least, less sure about a true love that both satisfies what she's personally looking for in a partner and the responsibility she has as princess to choose a suitable spouse.
Opinion on love at first sight: Sonia was sure this didn't exist. Until the day she met Gundham Tanaka: that was the first and only time she fell for someone at first sight. She can be attracted to someone, yes, but really fall for them? That's a Gundham-exclusive habit.
How ‘romantic’ are they?: Sonia makes an effort to be romantic, because there's so much of her life where she's not allowed to be romantic. Public displays of affection, for one, aren't allowed, especially in her adult years unless it's for a specific purpose (engagement photos, wedding, etc.). Too much affection makes people uncomfortable, or so the Royal Family is raised to believe. So she makes up for it in private: messages to those she loves of encouragement, of admiration, of deep respect and adoration for everything they are. Quality time as soon as she's able to get it. Gifts she hopes they really like. And if they're sharing a bed, she will sleep with her arms and legs wrapped around them. As a child she was always afraid and unhappy when her parents left her behind for business trips or royal appearances that were unfit for children, and so she'd hug her pillow in response for comfort. In relationships, that translates to her partner. Good luck getting up to use the restroom, or use of your arm, once Sonia has locked on.
Ideal physical traits: Chest. Discourse.
Jokes aside, she likes people who are moderately to very physically fit (she wants to snuggle those muscles/chest), more on the taller (or at least above average height) side, and often gravitates towards brunettes or redheads. Also see: pretty goths.
Ideal personality traits: People who are kind to others! Living things of all sorts: are you good with cheering up and/or looking after kids? How about tending to wounded and/or neglected animals? Or volunteering for charities? Yeah, that is very attractive to her.
She also appreciates someone well-read, with a sharp wit, a sense of humor, and often a tender, soft side most people don't usually get to experience and appreciate.
A sense of adventure, an interest in other cultures besides their own, and respects, if not has a personal interest, in her hobbies? Please, leave her your phone number/Instagram/LINE info.
Unattractive physical traits: Sonia isn't usually physically attracted to people shorter and slighter than she is. Same goes for those who are often ill. She just...likes some muscles, ok?
Unattractive personality traits: People who put her on a pedestal/Kazuichi Soda, rude people, bullies, snobs, greed, selfishness, vulgarity, gold diggers, closemindedness, and much of the upper class who embody these traits.
There's a reason why my ideal rivals-to-lovers ship is Sonia/Byakuya Togami.
Ideal date: She's mostly just happy to spend time with the person she loves whenever she gets it!
But Sonia does enjoy: trips to the movies (horror and/or anime, if she's picking the film), visits to the bookstore (will you help her hold her bags because she always buys too much!), exploring a cafe (new or an old favorite. Desserts are a must!), riding every roller coaster and haunted house attraction at an amusement park, basking in the quiet of nature, perusing a city she's either never been before or absolutely loves, investigating haunted locations, and summoning demons.
Do they have a type?: Sonia says she doesn't, I disagree. Her ships tend to fall into one of three categories, and they can be combined:
Witty disasters (if they need to be muzzled because of their teasing or over-the-top flirtation, they belong here)
Muscled himbos/bimbos (applies to all genders. If your muse is sweet and kind but likely isn't going to graduate top of their class but are pretty physically fit, they belong here)
Goths. (This is occupied by Gundham and Shinobu so far)
There certainly have been outliers before, but in general, it's these three categories.
Average relationship length: Barring her first relationship, quite a long time. Sonia usually either marries her partner or they suffer a terribly emotional breakup that she is still, in a way, recovering from. She's not a one-night stand or casual relationships sort of person.
Preferred non-sexual intimacy: Curling up in their lap, sleeping with them, having them curl up in her lap while she strokes their hair, reading to them while interspersing kisses here and there (bonus if the scene is a spicy one), watching a TV show or movie together, eating food her partner has cooked (it is not advisable to do the inverse unless the date is ending at the hospital).
Apparently discussing serial killers in a 50 kilometer radius of their location, seeking out ghosts, and trying to contact demons does not count as non-sexual intimacy but Sonia has yet to accept this.
Opinion of public affection: She wishes she could, she really does! She would love to be able to kiss her partner in public, if just on the cheek, and snuggle in close to their side to keep warm (and feel their arms, let's be real). She would love to pull them close into a hug that lasts just a little too long to be platonic and friendly. She would love to whisper something terribly indecent, only for them to hear and be forced to think about the rest of the day until they are alone.
Instead, there's just a lot of lewd handholding going on. Intertwining fingers, reverent caresses, and maybe a little of looking at her partner's lips and wishing she could taste them right in that moment.
Patience is a virtue.
Past relationships?: You must obtain a certain amount of relationship time and experience with Sonia to unlock this trauma. So far, no one has reached that level (yet).
And in most of her ships, it's presumed she has dated Gundham in the past (except in her ships with Gundham).
Finally, my toxic romantic shipping trait is that our ship will get at least one (1) Taylor Swift song that gives me Their Vibes. This is non-negotiable.
