Dazai in the light novels has been down BAD since the day he met Chuuya.

I know the whole "must be because I love you" can be viewed as a joke but my man actually "whispered with a look of regret" at being shot down.

He also proceeded to cheat during the game by tampering with the machine to ensure Chuuya would lose the bet and become his dog. He was also stated as being in awe of Chuuya's fighting ability, repeatedly refering to him as "incredible". Dazai also flat out admits to wanting to try out living because "Chuuya convinced" him.

He is even described as having forgotten how to breathe watching Chuuya fight.

Moving on to the events of Stormbringer, Dazai spends too long exposing his obsession with Chuuya, telling the big bad that he spends all his "days and nights thinking about ways to annoy Chuuya".

He further proceeds to insist that Chuuya is human because of how strongly he hates Chuuya and due to a specific word it can be viewed as him saying Chuuya would hate him less if he wasnt human as was stated in the stage play of the same.

Furthermore at the end of Stormbringer he offers to come up with a new plan to give Chuuya an out if he needs one when he has to use corruption as a last resort. And he fully intends on coming up with a new plan within 2 minutes.

In general Dazai does a lot of staring at Chuuya throughout the light novels. On a lighter note Dazai jokes about wanting Chuuya as his personal maid at one point and demands that Chuuya let Dazai look inside his head and know everything there is to know about him.

But then we move onto the dragon head conflict as mentioned in Dead Apple where after making light of an executive's death and getting punched in the face by Chuuya, Dazai is so shaken up by Chuuya implying he's inhuman, he actually pulls strings to try and bring the conflict to an end. He also stops corruption by touching his cheek and pulls Chuuya's head into his lap while he is unconscious after his fight with Shibusawa. The following is from the manga.

Now everyone knows about the whole Snow White and Prince reference but in the light novel its clarified that Chuuya's ability was not affected by the fog and Dazai knew this but he still forces his head down. Even more telling is that Dazai cradles Chuuya's face for no real reason because Corruption had already been nullified when Chuuya made skin to skin contact when punching him in the face.

And of course that was how their expressions are drawn in the manga panel

Then we move to the present day and you have Dazai saying this to Sigma about Chuuya

But then his comment about Gide has him claim the exact same behaviour is romantic in his messed up troll brain

Basically Dazai has a history of staring at Chuuya in awe since 15, "jokingly" confessed at 15 and then got somewhat upset about the rejection, cheated to be able to keep Chuuya as his, repeatedly makes remarks that imply he is vaguely obsessed with him at 16, tends to let Chuuya rest his head in his lap post corruption, has nullified him twice that we have seen by touching his cheek (as per the movie and once as per the ln). Is actively affected by how Chuuya views him (which was shocking to me).

Aside from that he has also talked about Chuuya to the ADA off screen because Yosano knew about Chuuya and his ability (though this could just be a random update about the membera of the mafia to watch out for during meetings) and I heard he talked about Chuuya to Oda in The Day I Picked Up Dazai ln.

This is not counting any of the seriously insane amount of wan content because I dont view it as canon or atleast entirely canon but there Dazai admits to keeping 27 journals detailing things about Chuuya and its an exaggeration of the canon fact that Dazai prides himself in being a Chuuya Nakahara Encyclopedia. It also plays with how close they both actually are with several character refering to them as besties, Chuuya being forced to admit he doesnt actually hate Dazai.

(Oh and this is not even considering just how much Dazai touches Chuuya, like in the manga there is a part where Dazai keeps tugging at Chuuya's hair and refusing to let go while complaining about how much he doesnt want to touch him. Just let go dude...)

So yea, I would not be surprised if Dazai has his vows prepared by the time the last pre defection ln drops. Ofcourse this is mostly a lighthearted joke about Dazai being down bad but in all seriousness, Dazai genuinely cared about and still cares about Chuuya and its made extremely obvious throughout the novels. Its actually worth noting that it was actually Chuuya who seemed to be more vitriolic towards him until the end of Stormbringer where Dazai actually gives Chuuya a choice and shows open concern for Chuuya's needs. Hell Dazai was also the one insisting on Chuuya's autonomy, while he keeps insisting Chuuya is his dog, he hates the idea of people using him like a tool, its why he always gives Chuuya a choice. Chuuya always actively chooses to go rescue Dazai in Dazai's plans of getting kidnapped. Chuuya can always go, "nah, I dont wanna use corruption" but he doesnt because he knows since the events of stormbringer that Dazai will always give him a choice even if corruption seems like a last resort.

Chuuya has good reason for trusting Dazai. Its cause Dazai has in fact proven to him that he can trust him. Its why he went in to fight a dragon despite being told Dazai was possibly already dead.

(And yea I know the current arc would have people go "lol he tried to drown Chuuya, he clearly doesnt care" and you know what? That's so dumb. Dazai tried to drown Chuuya, yes. But we dont actually know what is happening with this arc rn and what he is doing or if Chuuya is in any way involved in whatever he is doing. Dazai said all those things and there was no need for him to say that but the fact that he even remembered several moments they shared, yea no, he was clearly affected by it. Maybe I am wrong and Asagiri decided to yeet out all of Dazai's characterization we saw with his behaviour towards Chuuya in 2 entire novels of his past but IDK I think I'm gonna wait till this arc ends and everything unfolds before making a conclusion about how Dazai is such an asshole he tried to drown his partner.)

Saying a female character is only three-dimensional if she has traditionally "masculine" characteristics without any "feminine" traits is just playing into the misogynistic idea that women are only "okay" if they're like men, and saying that fandom is stripping a female character of agency and reducing her to a love interest by portraying her with "soft" traits and giving her a romance(with a man) is just dumb, especially when no issue is made about fandom-izing a smart and strong male character into an incompetent "damsel/himbo/malewife."

i can’t stop thinking about how will’s love for mike was the only reason mike was able to say the words “i love you” and i’m going crazy.

el has been expressing her love for mike for such a long time. in season 3, she said “i love you” to him directly (he didn’t say it back), kissed him (he didn’t kiss her back) and then she walked away smiling while he just stood there with a confused expression on his face. while they were apart, she made a shrine for him and kept all of his letters, photos and cards. she sent him lots of letters and signed them all with “love, el”, but he didn’t do the same. in fact, mike didn’t keep anything of el’s and actually crumpled up her letters and threw one of them in the trash even though it could’ve been the last letter he received from her (she deserves so much better than this by the way).

el constantly expressed her feelings towards mike and showered him with love and affection but… it just simply wasn’t enough. he couldn’t tell her he loved her. he couldn’t even write it on paper. even when she was sobbing in his room and confronting him, practically begging him to just say it because she really needed to hear it more than anything (especially after how badly she got bullied the previous day), he still couldn’t say it. three simple words and he couldn’t say it. and then it just makes NO sense because his excuse is that if he told her how he felt, he was scared that if he lost her, it would just hurt more???? are you actually kidding me??? he lost her BECAUSE HE DIDN’T SAY IT. she went with owens even though she was warned she might not ever see mike again and that was the moment she realised she didn’t need mike anymore. she even left him a letter saying “from, el”. and you know what, even if mike was afraid of saying it, why did it have to make it all about himself? el really needed to hear she was loved in that moment and she was clearly struggling mentally, but he still didn’t say it and just sat there, lied to her and called her ridiculous. when you love someone and they’re struggling that badly, shouldn’t you do whatever you can to make them feel better, especially when it’s as simple as telling them you love them?

just look at will. his love for mike is so strong and genuine and real that he put mike first and sacrificed his own feelings just to help his relationship with el even though it absolutely broke him to do so. will would’ve been scared, heartbroken and terrified because he felt like he was about to lose mike, but he still did it because he saw mike was struggling and he loves him SO much and wanted to make him feel better. but mike couldn’t even tell his own girlfriend he loved her when she was crying? are you kidding me? and the thing that makes it so much more ridiculous is that he knows she wanted to hear the words “i love you”, so i don’t understand how he was so scared to say it. it would be understandable if she wasn’t showing him love or he didn’t think she cared about him, but she did! she constantly showed him love and literally started SOBBING because he couldn’t tell her he loved her!!!!! she’s the one who has put so much more effort into their relationship while mike has just sat there barely doing anything. he couldn’t even write “love, mike” on paper so it doesn’t make sense to me at all.

and in the next episode when mike is talking to will, he says that maybe if he said that thing, she would’ve taken him with her. see?! he knew exactly what she wanted to hear and he’s aware that NOT saying it is what pushed her away, but he still couldn’t say it when she was crying? this entire storyline is absolutely ridiculous and the fact that people are like “he just has trouble expressing his feelings but but he’s so in love with her” make no sense to me. because if that’s what they were going for, they wrote it SO horribly and the writing is just awful and makes no sense. it also means mike’s character is inconsistent and the entire thing feels unfair to el.

anyways, it’s just crazy because after all the love and affection el showed mike, it still wasn’t enough for him for him to say he loved her.

but you know what was enough?

will.

just will. will confessed his OWN feelings to mike. he gave him the painting, and mike’s entire face lit up. he looked the happiest he had been all season, like it was the greatest gift he had ever received. then will told him he was “the heart”, something which clearly meant the world to mike and made him feel so much better about himself. will also told mike that he’s never made him feel like a mistake for being different and he gives him the courage to fight on. he also said he’ll always need him.

it was will’s feelings that mike fell in love with. it was will’s feelings that gave mike hope, strength, happiness, courage and motivation. will loves mike for exactly who he is and mike loves will for exactly who he is. they understand each other better than anyone else and they can actually be themselves with each other.

the only thing that would make sense for all 3 characters is el breaking up with mike and mike and will realising their feelings for each other, because that’s what it’s been building up to. el should realise she doesn’t need to be in a relationship with mike, and then she can find happiness elsewhere, whether it’s with a new partner or on her own for a while. she deserves to be with someone who will love her for who she is, not just her powers. and that person should also be able to tell her they love her without being pressured into it. will deserves to be with his best friend and the boy he’s loved for most of his life since he’s suffered from the very beginning and hasn’t had a moment of peace and happiness. mike also deserves to be with the person he’s closest to, the one that he can be his true self around without hiding. he’s been pretending to be someone he’s not for so long and it’s only hurt him and the people around him. it’s not healthy or fair that mike and el are stuck in a relationship where they constantly lie, don’t feel like equals and can’t even be themselves around each other, and then will is shoved to the side like always and suffers all alone. mike and el staying together and will being by himself would be such a horrible thing to do and it wouldn’t make sense from a writing standpoint.

This new sourcebook is kind of crazy given how much this topic has been de-emphasized in previous lore shit? Like when I was first getting into vtm I remember it felt like basically everywhere you look you're getting reminded that the vast majority of vampires, even with relatively high humanity, are just so fundamentally Un-Human that genuinely falling in love with someone (or even just wanting to fuck), whether a human or another vampire, was so unlikely as to be essentially irrelevant as a concept unless its some kind of deliberate psychological manipulation thing or a mealtime strategy. And ppl on the subreddits were also particularly hard asses about that kind of arbitrary restriction in my experience.

And of course people have always still done it anyway because it is a staple of storytelling Lol but releasing a WHOLE SOURCEBOOK on the topic of incorporating vampire romance into your chronicle is crazy. Like even though v5 is very clearly about broadening the appeal and accessibility of vtm I would not have expected this much focus on it when it was previously antithetical to vampirism. Lmfao

GODDDD, this. I was kind of wondering if greg would go in that direction after the interview quote of him saying that they do have arguments, but that has evolved into full-blown fear after that RIDICULOUS lacus solitudinis story (ie: the straightest, laziest writing ever); if they do fight in TOG 2 i hope it 1) is minor 2) is well-written (i've read well-written arguments between them in fic - it IS possible!!) 3) doesn't revolve around freakin' BOOKER (🙄🙄🙄)

Yep, this is a real fear. ;_; I'm so with you though, like if they do write in some conflict I hope it's just done well and doesn't feel tacked on or unnecessary. Obviously they fight sometimes (I mean they killed each other sdfgds and their relationship has spanned over 900 years), but I don't think we're all asking for much when we just want to see a genuinely happy gay couple stay happy (and see them communicate or resolve in healthy, non-toxic ways!!). There are all sorts of interesting things they can do with Joe and Nicky's side-plot that doesn't wind up reducing them to some pointless hetero-coded drama. Let's cross our fingers and hope for the best!!

And you're right, there are so many well-written fics in this fandom that address conflict between Joe and Nicky and how they ultimately resolve it in healthy ways. If the movie disappoints, at least we have our peers. ;;;
