Alright apparently someone had to tell me “if you want to talk about witchcraft on your witchcraft sideblog, do it!” So guess what? I’m gonna do it.

So I was inspired by this post from @breelandwalker, but I’ve always wanted to make my own runes/symbol system for casting since I learned how to use Norse runes. I already had a symbol system, actually, because of course I did (it’s been incredible useful for making sigils).

So here they are!

They’re organized by element in rows, because if you know anything about my practice you know its gotta involve the elements. At the top is fire, then earth, water, and wind at the bottom. I made an effort to balance out the symbols with positive, negative and neutral/complex meanings, so that each element had both good and bad omens, though I think wind and fire are slightly more positive and water slightly more negative.

So, the meanings! (Left to right, top to bottom)

Fire (symbol of the whole element): the core, the spark, the energy source, the physical/mundane realm, encompasses the whole of the element (much like an ace in tarot.)

The Quilt: generosity, protection, warmth and rest, home, a safety net/supportive community

The Candle: ritual/routine, an observance/vigil, duty, hope/faith, diligence, memory

The Key: power, privilege, authority, safety, opportunity, secrets, ideas/knowledge, choices

The Cake: gathering, love, an achievement, celebration, reward, intimacy

The Bag: responsibilities, stress, overwhelm, burnout, emotional baggage

The Brick: Institutions, foundations, building; but also, destruction, disruption, conflict.

Earth (symbol of the whole element): the social sphere, kindness, connection, wonder, gratitude, passion, other people, the whole of the element basically.

The Sprout: Spring, youth, vulnerability, innocence, empathy, growth, new life

The Firefly: Summer, vitality, color, passion, expression, community, wonder, fertility

The Acorn: Autumn, luck, knowledge, an opportunity to invest/prepare, harvest

The Branch: Winter, barrenness, regret, loss, peace, forgiveness, death

The Felled Tree: think the tower card in tarot. Chaos, misfortune, expulsion from comfort zone/a sanctuary, disaster

The Woods: distance from civilization, adventure, getting lost, nature, wonder and strangeness, possible danger

Water (the whole element): the spiritual, intuition, mental health, relationship to the self, fluidity, patience, mindfulness

The Well: creation, wishes, renewal, healing, a source of life, creativity, inner life/world

The Umbrella: an mental shield, a listening ear, peace amidst emotional turmoil, disconnection from emotions, mindfulness, avoidance

The Mirror: Reflection, judgement, redirected energy/projection, meditation, self-image

The Book: intellect, knowledge, challenge, lessons, passive methods of learning, seeking

The Lightning Bolt: sudden change, clarity, direction, energy, motivation, an exclamation point

The Mosquito: annoyance, life-draining, conflict, grudges, “scratching makes it worse”

The Feather: comedy, convenience, avoiding consequences, freedom, escape, a favor owed

They are SO FUN, I highly recommend making runes like these. Having picked personal symbols, there was nothing to memorize (I made this whole post without looking at my reference) and after a few readings, they seem really accurate and easy to understand!

MAELSTROM

• Spirit animal: Turtle

You're a balanced combination of both soft, mysterious energy and firm, assertive energy. They can definitely see that you have mental compatibility with each other. Words flow between you effortlessly, conversations would take hours without anyone noticing time was flying by. They can talk about anything with you without fear of judgement and misunderstanding. Like a ballerina, their movements can be so graceful only because they've spent endless hours discipline themselves and practised.

Sometimes, they can think that you're being too engrossed in the pursuit of material achievements, like you're always in preparation mode for some disasters looming in the distant future. Greedy might be too strong of a word, but they can view you as materialistic or have a mindset of lack. They understand that material security is very important to you. You need to feel a strong foundation under your feet to feel safe. That can make you overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion, always looking for the next thing to do. But they can see you putting that same effort in making the relationship work, you care about them and are willing to take care of things to make their life easier. They will feel that you're always there when they need you, your presence is a constant that is very much needed in their life. They would feel empty, a part of them is missing when you're away.

SEA FOAM

They think you're their good karma (if you believe in the concept of karma) or a reward, a surprise given to them by some higher powers. I see the image of someone being ushered into someone's life. Both parties can be quite reluctant at first, but as fate has it, you and them need to be together. There's a heavy element of fatefulness in this connection, or so that's how they see it. You are destined to love each other, no matter how much both of you try to deny or run away from it.

I think you will be the one who does the running away in the beginning. You seem "hard to catch", like trying to catch a fish with their bare hands. You would fleet in and out of their life at first, they can't seem to figure you out. But your presence will be a pushing force in their life, pushing them into a different direction, to where they are afraid to tread but secretly wish to.

In their eyes, you can be a little immature or temperamental, acting on whims of the moment. This makes you exciting and unique but sometimes, also agitating and hard to pin down. It's like they're torn between the feeling of love and frustration for you. Their personality probably is more serious and intense than yours. Your habits might be a little more messy or undisciplined compared to this person. You seem confused lots of times and don't have a good grasp of how to navigate your daily life efficiently, yet miraculously, you still swim through life effortlessly, much to their amazement. You don't fret too much about the future, somehow always arrive at the desired destination on time, things just work out for you, as if you just need to focus on taking good care of yourself and be contented, the rest will be taken care of for you by some mysterious force. You just possess all the qualities they seek in a spouse, the thought of committing probably will appear in their mind early on. You have a natural ability to understand them, nurture and protect them, at the same time, be a reliable pillar of strength for them. You are serious in your commitment, never take feelings for granted, you date with marriage as end goal in mind. They also think you would make a good parent, someone with enough tenderness and discipline to raise children with good balance.

Your work might involve lots of travelling and communicating. They can see that these are prominent parts of your life, demanding a large chunk of your time. They think that you tend to overwork yourself, being too engrossed in working, you're always busy, I wonder if this also means that you don't spend enough time with them, they feel like they have to demand for your time, to take you away from whatever is bothering your mind. They think that you being in a relationship with them is be a big step away from your past wounds. Not that they want the credit for themselves, but as an admiration for you, for your strength. They can see that you had a great fear concerning relationship and commitment in general. Maybe you have been burnt in the past, childhood baggage, and the bad examples you saw around you made you wary of love. So choosing to be in a relationship with someone, being committed to that person, trusting that person enough to share yourself with them, all of these are really brave actions in their eyes. It shows that you don't let your past hold you back and define you, you rise above it and are willing to change, to choose happiness for yourself.  Sometimes, they would reminisce about the initial getting-to-know-each-other phase, how many obstacles they saw in your connection, and how hard it was for them to gain your trust and affection. They would even tease you for it.

Your life seems to be ridden with changes of direction. You're not meant to stay still in one place, both mentally and physically. Life will always present you some events to push you to move. You can't stay stagnant, if you think you're contented with the current situation, then sure enough, there would be an event, an opportunity appearing in front of you, making you reevaluate your current direction in life. So life with you definitely won't lack movements and changes. Another thing is, you also actively seek to restructure your life. From small hobbies to big life decisions, you can be pretty random and go with the flow. You would change the plan at the last minute, planning to turn left, then suddenly turn right because something caught your attention that made you change your mind. Or some mornings, you would suddenly announce that you will take up a new hobby, register for a dance class, learning new language etc. without prior warning.

Life with you would be busy, you always have something to do, a task to complete, a news to watch, a track to run, a book to read. It's like they can't never see you being still. Maybe that also made them feel like you were afraid of commitment when they first got to know you. They could feel that you're too busy for love. But of course, that's not true, being a busy bee is just who you are, and over time, they've gotten used to it and adapted to it well. That busy energy also shows itself in the way you talk. Maybe you talk a lot, very fast, always have something witty to say. They love your humour, your ability to look at yourself, and joke without being defensive. You have an enormous desire to learn and expand your mind. But you also fear going deeper. You might be the kind of person who learns various subjects simultaneously, has a good grasp of everything, but doesn't dig too deep into any particular subjects. Not because you're shallow or impatient, it's the opposite, you know that once you've engrossed yourself in something, you go all in, it would get to the core really fast, and this drains your time and energy so much, you're reluctant to dive in. You also know that there will be hidden things inside you that need to be uncovered if you were to go any deeper. But they think you have the strength to do this because they understand, deep down, you're much happier when you devote yourself to something.

Charm Casting (Divination pt1)

What is Charm Casting?

Charm casting or Lithomancy is a form of divination using stones, trinkets, and/or charms. These items are dropped or thrown down on a surface in a random order. Once placed they are read based on their position in relation to each other or the space.

Why Choose Charm Casting

Honestly, I chose to start using lithomancy because I tend to collect little tiny trinkets and think the charms are fun. Due to the nature of the charms, it can also be very useful for those still in the broom closet. Adding your charms to a bracelet, necklace, or just some earrings can be great ways to conceal your kit. I would also recommend anyone who craves a more personal connection to their divination try it out. Creating your own charm set can be very fulfilling and connect you more deeply to the practice.

How to put together a kit

First of all, your kit is entirely up to you! Everything you use should have a personal significance and meaning to you, it doesn't have to be fancy. Start by making a list of things you wish to represent in your kit, I would suggest the following;

Yourself, Relationships, Family, Money, Home, Self-care, Love, Day, Night, Seasons/Months, Growth, Nature, Death, Change, Pain, Fertility, Joy, and your Personal Spiritual Focuses

Cleansing, Connecting to, and Setting Intentions for your charms

Ok, so you've put together your kit, now what? I would recommend setting out all of your charms and cleansing them in whatever way you prefer. (Personally, I rinsed my charms in moon water and smoke cleansed them with my favorite incense.) Now that they are cleansed it should be pretty easy to connect to and set intentions for your individual charms. I sat with my charms, wrote out what each would mean in my Grimoire and held each one for a while. Once, I felt each charm had its meaning and energy sufficiently set they were stored in their new home (a small bag on Lady Athena's alter)

How to read the charms

Now for the hard part! Learning how to read the charms can be difficult at first but with practice it can be even easier than other forms of divination. Charms can be read using many criteria such as;

Color: Groups of charms in a specific color, number of charms in each color, etc. Whatever the color means to you can inform the message you read from the individual charms.

Groupings: Charms that are close to each other are often meant to be related to each other or meant to be read together as one message.

Direction: Charms can fall facing to your left, right, towards yourself, or away from yourself. These can be read as looking into the past, the future, the outside world, and the inner self.

Order: As the charms leave your hand, note the order in which they fall. This order can be interpreted as their order in time, importance, or power.

Okay, so here’s the thing about divination—whether it’s tarot, runes, scrying, or whatever tool you vibe with, it doesn’t have to be magic for it to be meaningful. Lithomancy (Divination with Stones)

Hey everyone! I posted about lithomancy recently, and wanted to circle back to it in more detail. I found this method in Doreen Valiente's Witchcraft for Tomorrow, Chapter 7. 

You need thirteen stones in total. Seven of them represent the seven planets. I won't go into the meanings of the planets here (to try would would do astrology a disservice), but they are:

Sun

Moon

Mars

Venus

Mercury

Jupiter

Saturn

The remaining six are the following: 

Life: governs mental and physical health 

Luck: governs fortune and the ability to make the most of it 

Love: governs all affairs of the heart, platonic and otherwise 

Home: governs the affairs of home and property 

News: governs news sent or received 

Magic: governs the factors with the heaviest influence 

These thirteen stones are cast upon a flat surface, then interpreted based on how they fall. The closer they are to each other, the stronger the influence between them. The stones closest to the Magic stone are extra important. 

For example, let's say that I see the Jupiter, News, and Home stones clustered together. This likely means that good news is on the way, and it's related to something I own. I also notice that the Venus and Love stones are close together, a gentle reminder of the importance of loved ones. 

While this method leaves a lot to interpretation, it's easier than it seems. If you have a handful of stones, I recommend giving it a try!

I'm not saying that you have these traits, but those people seem to pick up some of your behaviours as signs of these traits.

Or you don't talk much and some people find that attractive, they feel that you leave space for others to talk and express and you're not judgmental about it. I have a set of rocks that have designated meanings, and I pull them randomly from a bag (akin to how tarot cards are randomized in a deck and drawn) and I cast them onto a rug, and then I interpret questions based on what happens, similar to a tarot reading. :) I did a bunch of readings this weekend, so you can look at them on my blog and get a sense for it. (And of course, I'm about to do your question!)

Rock readings are really called "lithomancy," but no one knows what that means, and if I call it "rock readings," then people are more interested in learning about it, ha ha. So for all I know, I'm the only one who calls them "rock readings", lol.

Reading below!

You are represented by a blue rock, and the pink stone represents H. The rocks around them represent what they think about you, which I'm pointing out in a red circle here:

If you were hoping for romantic feelings, that's not here. Or at least, the rocks aren't talking about it. I think the clearest answer is the purple stone says that you make H. happy. There's a yellow stone that stands for health or the body, so this could be a hint toward an attraction, but it very well may mean that you have been talking with them about your health. Or maybe even about sports or athletics.

There are two rocks here that have opposite meanings (brown rock means home, green rock means outside or travel). The two rocks make a line with H.'s rock, which makes me think that H. is torn between staying home and going somewhere.

This is interesting, but I'm not sure how that might apply to what they think about you, unless you might be represented by one of those places. I have three ideas: 1. You two are from the same hometown and they want to leave? 2. You two are long-distance and they would have to travel to see you? or 3. You two might go on a trip together for some reason and H. isn't sure if they are going to go? No idea. Again, it might just be something the rocks are saying about H. that isn't related to you.

There's a brown stone touching your blue stone which stands for inspiration, which makes me think that you find H. inspiring. :)

The final rock is a white-brown rock up in the grey border. It stands for beauty, and I can't tell how this relates to you and H. 🌙Aeromancy

A means of divination through the interpretation of atmospheric phenomena such as cloud formations, wind currents, rain, fog, lightning, thunder, cosmological events, and positions favorable or unfavorable to the planet.

🌙Cartomancy

A form of divination where you use cards to get the answer to your questions. There are different forms of cartomancy like playing cards, tarot, lenormand and oracle cards.

🌙Osteomancy

Or bone throwing. It's an ancient form of divination used by many cultures. This method consist of throwing the bones and then interpret the results and pattern.

🌙Pendulum

This method consist of observing the subtle movements of the pendulum to gain information about a question, object, or situation.

🌙Scrying

Scrying is divination by seeking a vision while gazing into a transparent, translucent, or reflective object and it's often done by crystal ball gazing, fire scrying, water scrying, mirror scrying, etc.

🌙Astrology

This type of divination interpret movements and relative positions of celestial bodies, and how they influence us. Astrology gives an understanding of situations in our lives, based on our individual astrological birth chart.

🌙Lithomancy

Also known as stone divination, is a form of divination that uses stones or crystals to gain insight into an individual’s future or to provide guidance on a specific issue.

🌙Necromancy

Necromancy is divination through communication with the dead. In this method the practitioner summons or communicate with spirits of the dead in order to gain wisdom.

🌙Ceromancy

The practice of reading the flames and wax of a candle. The candle is lit and the flame examined for clues to the mood and energy surrounding the situation and then the wax is allowed to drip into a bowl of cold water or sometimes onto a piece of paper. The practitioner examines the shapes formed by the melted wax and makes predictions based on his or her interpretation of the shapes.

Is a method of divination where you read pattern and symbols from tea leaves or coffee grounds sediments.

🌙Arithmancy/Numerology

Arithmancy is known as divination using numbers, while numerology is divination through using dates and words turned to numbers. Numerology doesn't require any psychic abilities, instead the method use calculations involving name and birth date numbers.
