Never Forgotten (Joel Miller)
Joel Miller Masterlist
Warning: mention of loss/death, depression, angst, fluff
Summary: This story is very dear to me, written in honor of my late mother for the one-year anniversary of her passing (March 30th). Recognizing the same signs of hopelessness in her that he had been through, Joel reaches out a helping hand to get her through it. Inspired by Jessica Andrews' - Never Be Forgotten.
Tumblr media
"Jesus, that woman's been here every night for the past week" Joel utters out after noticing her in a far corn of the Tipsy Bison.
"She's havin' a tough month, let her be" Tommy bumps him with his shoulder to head for the bar.
"Drinkin' every night's a tough month?" Joel drawls, staring at her over his shoulder as she throws back shot after shot from the bottle on the table in front of her.
"Leave it alone, Joel..." Tommy warns him, eyes filled with sympathy as he chances a glance over his shoulder.
"She's been neglectin' her duties 'cause she's drunk off her ass everyday" Joel snarls out in disgust.
"No, she ain't" Tommy replies, "Maria gave her some time off."
"To drink?"
"Joel" Tommy scowls at him, "let it be. Let her be."
Joel's brow shoots a high arched brow at him, shrugging then, "fine. Ain't my business anyway."
The subject had been dropped, yet Joel couldn't help but think about her. He didn't really know her that well, they had never really crossed paths, but he remembered seeing her in Maria's group the day they made it to Jackson. She and another woman, almost identical to her had their guns pointed at him but what made him take notice of them; was that neither of them had it pointed on Ellie while the dog cleared them. What further piqued his interest was the soft banter between the two as they rode; the older one tilting her head in his direction and her telling the woman to "fuckoff" as they both softly chuckled. Joel didn't see either of them after that, as he and Ellie had left the next day. Even after that, he had only seen her from a distance, neither of them being on the same patrol group ever.
Tumblr media
It was an hour after the conversation that Tommy softly nudges Joel in the side, "fuck! The hell was that for?"
Silently tilting his head toward the door, Tommy directions him to follow and that's when Joel notices her exiting through it. "How the fuck she is still standing up straight after all that?"
"Where the fuck are we going?" Joel grumbles as they step out the bar.
"Wanna make sure she gets home safe" is Tommy's only response.
"Looks fine to me" Joel mutters out scowling in her direction as they follow at a distance.
"She hides it well. But she ain't" Tommy responds, a heavy sigh leaves his lips when she heads into the direction of the graveyard.
"Oh" Joel remarks when the realization hits, "she's in mourning..."
"Yeah" Tommy answers as they watch her standing in front of the entrance, "her mother."
"The woman that was with her the first time we got here?" Joel enquires, remembering the similarities in features between them.
Tommy nods in response, "they were inseparable. Best mother-daughter duo Jackson's ever had, had to be with how they managed to survive on their own till they got here."
"Thought they were sister's" Joel comments, a bit surprised at the news, "the mother still looked young, and they acted more like friends."
"She's 32 and her mother was 50" Tommy remarks, nudging him a bit harder to follow as she leaves the graveyard. "
"Jesus, the mother seemed young to have a daughter her age."
"Look who's talkin'..." Tommy drawls sarcastically, eyes narrowing with a knowing smirk. "Were ya checkin' her out...?"
"Shit", Joel cringes internally, thinking quick on his feet to distract from the truth. "Who? The mother?"
"Quit fuckin' about. Ya damn well know who."
"God, no!" Joel scoffs, "the mother was younger than me for God's sake. I'm far too old for her..."
They pause to watch her enter her home, turning around once it's clear she's safe inside. "Ya both have something in common, reversed... but still similar. Just saying."
"Ya crazy" Joel softly mutters.
Tommy shrugs a sympathetic smile, "do me a favor, if ya see her leave the bar before I do. Keep an eye on her."
Joel's brows furrow in deep thought, exhaling heavily and silently nodding in agreement.
Tumblr media
Joel wasn't quite sure why hell he was here and have been for the past week, maybe it was because he made a promise to Tommy or he's doing it because he knows exactly how hard it is to lose the person that was the biggest part of your heart. The heartache of having the parent-child relationship ripped away by death, especially when it had only been the two of them since day one.
He didn't actually have to be here every night; Tommy was always around but tonight Joel was glad he was. Tommy couldn't make it and she seemed extremely bad off as she sat staring at the bottle in front of her in a trance. Joel knows that look, has had that look plastered over his face once long ago.
Joel tenses when she suddenly gets up, grabbing the bottle and heads for the door. "She usually finishes it before leaving... somethin' ain't right."
Tumblr media
Joel quietly follows her as usual; keeping a distance once she stops at the graveyard entrance. He patiently waits for her to finish her nightly ritual, but she does something that surprise him then. Taking a long swig of the bottle, she then enters the graveyard instead of heading home.
Joel knew she went in to visit her mother's grave and knowing from personal experience the need to grieve alone; he waits outside to give her privacy. Quite some time had passed as Joel waited for her to finish her visit, mentally asking himself why was even doing it. Maybe it was because somehow, he feels a connection with her with what she was going through? Or maybe, he was growing soft.
Joel's thoughts are suddenly interrupted by the feeling of raindrops begin to fall, looking up to the dark sky; he lets out a heavy sigh as it rains starts pouring. "She'll catch her death in this weather..."
Rolling his shoulders back to mentally prepare for what he was about to find, Joel makes his way into the graveyard to find her.
I'll always see your face The corner of your smile And all the little things that no one will ever know Like it was yesterday Won't ever fade away Goodbye is just a word that I will never say
You will never be forgotten A million days could pass us by But what is time but just a dream Oh, I still feel you here with me You're more than just a memory Oh, you will never be forgotten
*
It was a bit of struggle through the rain and darkness, but Joel eventually finds her; sprawled out cold over your mother's grave, the alcohol bottle lying empty beside her.
Heart racing in fear; Joel crouches down to check if she's breathing, breathing out a sigh of relief then, "thank God, she's only passed out drunk."
Carefully grasping hold of her; Joel softly groans as his knees and back protests when gently lifting her up in his arms. Making it to the entrance without any incidents; Joel silently scans the empty streets as he ponders what to do with her.
His house was far closers and she needed to be out of these drenched clothes or risk the chance of getting sick.
With that thought in mind, Joel lets out a sigh of defeat and heads in direction of his house.
Successfully making it in the house; Joel contemplates for a second while standing in the living-room with her passed out in his arm, eventually deciding on his bedroom.
Gently placing her on the bed, Joel stares frowning at her unconscious state sprawled across his bed. "Now for the difficult part." He goes to his dresser for a shirt, coming back and begins to gently, yet respectfully strip her of the drenched clothing. Staring with her shirt first, the air exits Joel's like a punch to the gut when he notices the memorial tattoo across her collar bone.
"Shit. Today was the one-year anniversary..."
I can't hold your hand Or look into your eyes And when I talk to you It just echoes in my mind But if hearts are made of dust And if we fell from the stars I look up tonight and know just where you are
You will never be forgotten A million days could pass us by But what is time but just a dream Oh, I still feel you here with me You're more than just a memory Oh, you will never be forgotten
*
Clutching at her pondering head, she sets up with a heavy groan, "where the hell am I...?" While silently scanning the room she had woken up in, her eyes instantly fall on a familiar coat hanging of a chair. "Joel Miller's?"
She knew that Joel was the person accompanying Tommy while keeping an eye over her during the pass nights but never thought that he would go this far out of his way. The two of them barely knew each other, only having been in proximity to one another once the first time he and Ellie had arrived in Jackson over a year ago. Her mother had field day when noticing the manner the two of them silently side-eyed one another. It didn't matter whether was an attraction or not, as he left the very next day and not long after that, her world came crashing down.
Silent tears pricked at her eyes at the thought of her late mother; she had lost the only thing she had left in this doomed world and now had nothing of meaning to live for.
"These no use in wasting time on matters that can't be changed", she shakes her head to clear it, "might as well go downstairs and face the music."
Tumblr media
Like a meek mouse, she makes her way into the living-room; a rush of guilt coursing through her when noticing the blankets and pillows on the couch. Hearing movement in the kitchen she heads towards it, finding Joel in front of the stove; she loudly clears her throat to make her presence know.
"You're awake" a wide-eyed Joel turn around.
"Yeah" she mutters, shyly looking down for a second then back up at him, "thank you."
"Don't mention it" Joel awkwardly responds, clearing his throat then, "coffee?"
"Love some" she faintly smiles, taking a seat at the kitchen counter as Joel pours it.
Both sit in awkward silence for a moment as they sipped at their coffee, finally she breaks the silence. "Sorry for burdening you."
"Couldn't leave ya in the cold rain. Wouldn't be much of a gentleman if I did" Joel replies with a sympathetic smirk.
"Hope you were one when undressing me?" she looks up from the cup with a smirk of her own, softly giggling when Joel blushes at her words.
"I... erm... couldn't let ya catch cold."
"Was only teasing" she chuckles, reaching out and placing a hand over his, "thank you, Joel. I truly appreciate it."
Like a fish out of water, Joel silently frowns at her hand. Retreating her hand in embarrassment, she stares back at her coffee. "You saw the tattoo, so you know..."
"Yeah" Joel murmurs, staring at his own cup, "sorry for ya loss."
"Thank you" she whispers, tears beginning to prick at eyes. "May I ask you something?"
"Sure" Joel responds.
"I..." she takes a second to compose, "I can see that you know the loss of such a relationship..."
Joel doesn't respond, a deep frown across his face when she looks up at him.
"Does it-" she pauses as her voice trembles with silent sobs, tears freely flowing now. "Does it get better with time...?"
Joel remains silent as he continues to stare at her frowning.
Realizing it was a sensitive topic, "I... I'm sorry" she murmurs, getting up to leave but Joel is faster; grabbing hold of her arm, he pulls her into an embrace.
Holding tightly onto her as she sobs into his chest, Joel finally speaks. "Sarah..."
Lifting her head from his chest, she silently stares up at him.
"My daughter... her name was Sarah. And no, it doesn't get any better. There is comfort in knowing that they'll never truly be gone though... not when they'll always live through our memories of 'em."
With a teary smile, she presses her face back into his chest as she poured out her agony. Pressing a gentle kiss into her hair, Joel holds her tightly in his embrace as he gently rocks her back and forth.
And the world just keeps on going It has no way of knowing That you're gone
You will never be forgotten A million days could pass us by But what is time but just a dream Oh, I still feel you here with me You're more than just a memory Oh, you will never be forgotten Forgotten...

No, no. We HAVE to talk about that quote and Paul and Andrew falling in love on set. WTF is going on. I have gone from, yes I can see this chemistry to... yeah they have done it to... are they a couple? Why would he say that out loud!
haha, to be fair, claire foy also acknowledged that 'you're falling in love with a person you're not in love with' (though it happens that actors actually end up falling in love sometimes, she said) & sometimes it can get very confusing, kind of blurring of lines, i guess -- your body doesn't know you're acting, actors end up tricking their body (she mentions how she reacted to seeing herself on screen because her body was remembering of what it was going through in that moment). so, i don't want to overanalyze, but i can't really recall actors ever being this open with 'falling in love' with their co-star; to be fair, i haven't really kept up with any other press tour like this either though, so i'm not saying no one has ever talked about this before. i've kind of briefly touched on this whole thing before in the tags on a post, but i'm always kind of reminded of how jessica chastain was talking about how her & oscar isaac's friendship wasn't the same after filming 'scenes from a marriage' & she felt like she needed some distance -- though i guess that movie is very different to aous lol. so, i guess it's fair to conclude that sometimes it bleeds through into real life (because your body doesn't know you're acting & will react). & the bleeding through is what has got me unintentionally curious about these two; i can't help it. like yeah, they were friends before & have both acknowledged how they became closer & closer while shooting aous, but where does it end? are actors truly superior humans & able to switch it all off once filming wraps up? it's the fact that they don't seem to want to distance themselves from one another that has me really question it? bc they've both played love interests before & stayed friends with those actors, but this feels different -- from the little i've seen of them. like paul didn't talk about daisy or saoirse this way, though to be fair, they didn't do a lot of promo for those projects. all i can think of is when my best friend confessed he was in love with me & when i didn't reciprocate he needed space from me & our friendship. but maybe andrew & paul are able to separate themselves from adam & harry and have set boundaries. & someone said that's just how irish dudes act with their friends so 🤷🏻‍♀️ and re: "why would he say that out loud!", they've both said some incredibly wild shit during this goddamn press tour, but that's a different subject altogether.

for @bughead-bones and @stonerbughead who asked about my s5 murder mystery au: i plotted like 90% of this story out a year or two ago. who knows if i'll ever actually write it all, but if i do, it's going to switch POVs between betty, jughead & veronica. i've never written veronica's pov before, so that's been a little challenging. here's a snippet from jug's pov!
“Jess, have you seen my tie?”
“Nope.”
Jughead emerges from the bathroom to find her sprawled out across the motel room bed, tapping away at her phone. He presses two fingers to his temple, willing away the headache just barely beginning to throb. “Okay, well could you help me look for it? We’re going to be late.”
“I don’t think you have to wear a tie at a funeral.” Jessica slinks off of the bed anyway, leaning halfway over the chipped tv stand to peer behind it. He resists the urge to redirect her towards a more plausible spot, like the pile of clothes she’s left pooled by the foot of the bed.
“I want to,” he replies tightly. He lifts her leather jacket off the seat of the desk chair — bingo. “Help me tie this?”
She complies, kissing his cheek as she loops the tie around his neck. “You seem really antsy about this.” She tightens the knot at the base of his throat and then tugs on the end a little, teasing, as she steps back.
“I’m about to give a eulogy for my best childhood friend.”
“Yeah, your best friend who stole your girlfriend.” Jessica raises one eyebrow before laying back on the bed again, toying idly with the end of her long, black braid.
Sometimes he wishes he’d never told her about that. If Betty’s at the funeral today, and Jessica figures out who she is, god only knows what she’ll say.
God only knows what he’ll say. It’s been a little over a year since they — he? she? does it matter? — ended whatever you’d call the semi-regular communication they’d carried on with ever since the breakup. For six years they’d texted back and forth: book recommendations, professional accomplishments, the occasional meme that made them think of one another.
None of it came close to scratching the surface of their former relationship. But he misses it. He still finds himself reaching for his phone when he reads an article or a line in a novel that he thinks she’d like. Every time, he forces himself to set it aside. Her silence spoke for her, loud and clear: she doesn’t want to hear from him.
Jughead turns back towards the bathroom mirror, pretending to fiddle with his hair. “That was seven years ago.”
And I’m over it. And I’ve forgiven him. All the words Jughead knows he should say — the words that he thinks, most days, are true — congeal like putty in his mouth, unable to emerge fully formed.
“And now he’s dead,” he adds, unnecessarily.
It still feels unreal, conceptually speaking: Archie is dead. Sure, he may have had some brushes with death — Jughead’s had more than a few of his own — but Archie Andrews wasn’t the kind of person who would just die. He half expects that when he walks into the church this afternoon, Archie will be standing right there, gathered with all their old friends and acquaintances, laughing at what a gullible sucker Jughead’s become in his not-yet-old age.
But the article is still there loaded on his phone, same as it was one week ago when JB had texted him the link: LOCAL ACTIVIST FOUND DEAD. Friends of Archie Andrews, 25, say they have questions.
The piece went on to quote names Jughead used to encounter on a daily basis: Local businesswoman Toni Topaz. Riverdale Sheriff Tom Keller. Town coroner Dr. Curdle Jr. It read almost like something he himself had penned as a macabre writing exercise, filling in the blanks of a murder mystery plot with the people who had once formed the landscape of his own life.

Chortle headlines roundup, anyone?
Tumblr media
Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope. We're not doing this. Jeremy Hardy went in his late 50s, Paul Sinha's health is deteriorating, if we lose Mark Steel before his time then they'll have to just cancel Radio 4. Not doing that. Fuck that shit. He's only 63, that's younger than my parents. Absolutely not.
...The article does say the condition is treatable and he'll likely be okay after a while, so that's good. It also has some on-brand quotes from him that muse on mortality. Good man. We are not losing that one yet.
(Obviously... not to make a serious issue all about me and other lovers of Radio 4 or anything... I wish a speedy recovery and the best for him and his family and all that.)
Tumblr media
I wasn't sure I was going to watch season 3 of this - not that seasons 1 or 2 were bad, but season 2 didn't keep my attention all that well (except when Joe Wilkinson and Jessica Hynes were on), I figured I get the idea and don't really need to see a lot more. But actually, that's quite a good lineup. Roisin Conaty is always funny. Add in Alan Davies, Guz Khan, and Chris McCausland - and yeah, I'll probably give Knockoff Taskmaster a watch again.
Tumblr media
You know, I wondered about then when I watched the French and Saunders show. The constant fat jokes about Dawn French seemed okay because she was one of the writers, she was choosing to say it about herself, that makes it okay the same way it is when Jo Brand does it. But still, there really were a lot of them. And obviously comedians are pressured to make any feature about themselves into a USP, so just because she agreed to do the jokes doesn't mean she always wanted to. That show was funny, it's a pity to see this.
(Obligatory note that the headline, like most headlines, is a bit sensationalized, these Chortle headline round-ups are meant to be partly a joke about how the headlines don't really tell you anything and just throw a bunch of disparate facts in your face all at once, and you should really read the articles if you want to know stuff. But the information in the headline is basically accurate.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Aussies are coming! The Aussies are coming! With their excessive Rs after vowels and their mildly racist names for coolers!
(I briefly misread the Sam Campbell article's description as calling him a "Taskmaster winner", and had a split second of believing Chortle had somehow made a colossal blunder and accidentally posted a huge spoiler that made me very pleased.)
Tumblr media
If they make that, I'll probably watch it. I might watch some of the Irish one because Aisling Bea and Catherine Bohart, even though the worst fucking person in the world is also on it.
I did watch the first two episodes of the Canadian one. Have I admitted that on here yet? It wasn't my finest hour - and it was just one hour, two episodes - when I watched reality TV on Amazon Prime. But Mae Martin was in it. Mae Martin was in it looking focused and intense as they tried not to laugh and for personal reasons I just had to see that. Then (spoiler alert, I guess) they were out after two episodes, so I didn't watch any further.
I have to admit I rather enjoyed it, though. The rest of the cast was also funny. It had Jon Lajoie, guy who made a bunch of funny videos when I was in high school that my friends and I used to quote all the time, then didn't make anything for like 12 years, then came back in 2020 with this absolute earworm that hit the perfect note of what we needed in early pandemic days:
youtube
Anyway, he was on the Canadian LOL show, and he was pretty entertaining. Also Colin Mochrie from Who's Line, which I used to watch as a kid. Tom Green, quite a good stand-up comedian who went to my high school (not at the same time or anything, he's much older than me, he's just the only famous person who ever went to my high school). K Trevor Wilson, aka Squirrly Dan from Letterkenny. Andrew Phung from Kim's Convenience. It was fun seeing the mishmash of Canadian comedy people from all these different things in one room. I guess would be less of a novelty in the UK, since we don't have panel shows here.
And I've got to admit, when I forced the judgmental "there is no logical reason why this is a higher form of entertainment than any other shit reality TV" part of my brain to turn off, I found the format pretty funny. I'd watch Irish people do that. I'd watch British people do it. I mean, I didn't love it enough to finish the show after Mae was gone. But I might go back to it at some point.
Tumblr media
Still doing that, are we? Going with the cheeky term "peeing Tom" for men who spy on naked women without their consent? I don't object to Hugh Dennis playing the role obviously, they're not going to portray that as a guy we're supposed to like. Just not sure I love Chortle's word choice.
Tumblr media
That's good. Put your minds at ease, people who are worried that Jim Davidson isn't mentoring aspiring comedians. Everything's okay.
Tumblr media
I was about to say "Steve, what the fuck would you consider a 5-star show then?", but then I remembered that to be fair to Steve Bennett, the quality of this show does vary wildly depending what night you see it and who's in the audience. Don't turn up to this and derail it with heckles, everyone, even though you're allowed. The show in its proper form is brilliant.
Tumblr media
I tried to ignore this one, I really did. But I'm sorry, that's too funny a headline not to include here. Sorry, Johnny. Bad luck.

PERSONALITY:
then how’d those two kids die last summer?
guarded. secretive. sarcastic. temperamental. good at reading people + rooms. protective.
HISTORY:
Dodge never knew his father. That fact never bothered him. He had bigger things to worry about, namely the fact that his mom lost everything after his sister was paralyzed during Panic two years ago. They moved away from Carp, only to move back a year later. He reenrolled in high school, determined to figure out who had paralyzed his sister.
He couldn’t find out much. Being the new kid had advantages, but not much. He knew that Ray Hall’s older brother was the likeliest suspect, but he had no proof. So he decided to play. He’d always known he would. Now he just had the push he needed to actually go through with it. And if he played and won, he’d get money and closure about Dayna’s accident.
So he played. He ended up meeting Heather Nill and her friends, Bishop Moore and Natalie Williams. They were nice enough people. He had a thing with Nat for a bit before he ended it. She’d been lying about a lot of things and Dodge had always hated lying. He didn’t win Panic, but then again, no one did. He decided to stay in Carp for the summer, working on Anne’s farm and at the diner; the money he got was better than just leaving everyone behind.

new kid syndrome//verse - pre panic. dodge is back in carp and he hates it. he never wanted to come back here, but he supposes he can take advantage of it. he re-enrolls in high school and starts compiling a list of who to avoid and who to not. if he’s going to play panic, he needs to know the competition.
a dollar a day//verse - the summer of panic. summer is here and so is panic. dodge doesn’t just intend to play, he intends to win. and if he can take out ray hall while he does it, that’s just an added bonus.
aftermath is a tricky thing//verse - post panic. nobody really won panic. dodge stays in carp and works the diner. he doesn’t have anything better to do. he didn’t apply to college. so he stays and watches the same five people come in and out. it’s boring, but it’s money. and he wants out, which means he needs money.
this world will remember me//verse - 30s au. dodge is a well known thief in texas, stealing anything and everything he can get his hands on. no one knows why he started stealing, but they all know he’s very, very good at it. he’s been caught exactly once and he managed to break out within the hour. he hasn’t been caught since and he doesn’t intend to get caught again.

It's still very good that I haven't had a meltdown in weeks now. But I still feel guilty that the only times I have ever panicked or had any meltdowns was in relation to N. Dreams or nightmares?
It's a lot of things to process.
Big change. It takes a while to shift my mindset. But I still see him as a friend.
I try really hard to be a good person.
A good friend. But right now I'm not sure.
I'm still processing the break up, I'm back into writing as if how much stress it caused me to have meltdowns so often was causing me to get depressed and lose interest in things. I got writers block.
I feel so much better now.
It's sad that I couldn't be this productive and motivated before. Ambitious.
I wish I could have been able to accept that I can do things for myself. Be free.
I feel safer now I guess?
My decision to get a female driving instructor is comforting. Hopeful.
I feel like without the anxiety and stress that I had before I'll get on better than I did before. I need to keep up with the plans.
My goals are to write and practice guitar every day. Eventually I will post things on YouTube and I want to learn the Nick Cave song off by heart at least.
My love and trust for N might be evolving, as it is always unconditional yet has grown platonic, I take with me the lessons he taught me through all my denial and doubt over how I could possibly do things without anyone telling me I was doing it wrong somehow. At least now I trust him more as a friend. I'm glad for that.
As my best friend he will always be remembered most of all. Nakama.
My anxiety seems to be a lot better recently and that makes me happy.
I need to process other things too.
Tumblr media
I think I might be gay? I'm an egg.
I'm not sure yet, I told N I think I might be.
I told him I've been questioning everything and honestly I had a lot of dysphoria.
I question so much eventually I'm going to question and overthink the first question.
"Was I meant to be born a boy?"
"I identify with Andy/Angie more than my birth name so maybe I want to be a guy?"
"I do love to be called my gender neutral name and gender neutral pronouns"
"I would have been called Andrew"
And then I think about how I was scared I'd lost my attraction to N before and I felt that wishing for not having anything.
I don't want to be touched down there.
I don't want to have any surgery there.
I feel weird and confusing to sex.
The last thing I want is to make N think he's turned me gay. But also I never felt like I could be my true self with him.
There was always that wall in the way.
Sides of the wall were transparent but it was never as accessible as the way things were back when I used to blog about it on here back in the day. I loved him directly.
Fireworks in all that. Intense emotional outbursts and meltdowns aside. He was a good egg and a humble person. My muse.
He's still my muse. N is like JW a lot.
JW now he'll eventually outgrow Mel too.
Or would that be a misdirection? Who is to say. But generally I want to focus on me.
Writing this helps me a lot. To process.
I'm so tired too. I must try sleep.

It's never too early to get excited about TV Christmas movies — and UPtv is about to deliver a bunch of new ones this season!
PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that the network will be premiering eight new holiday movies in 2023, featuring stars like Melissa Peterman, Chesapeake Shores alum Jessica Sipos, Virgin River's Sarah Dugdale and even wrestler Chris Jericho.
Vocal group Gaither will also be getting their own music special, A Christmas Homecoming.
The "most uplifting Christmas ever," according to the network, will kick off 45 days — and nearly 600 hours — with the first of its new original movie premieres, We're Scrooged, on Nov. 5. Additionally, on Nov. 3, its subscription streaming service UP Faith & Family will begin streaming more than 200 Christmas favorites.
“At UP Entertainment, the curation of an uplifting, diverse and uniquely special holiday offering for our viewers every year is our passion,” Hector Campos, senior vice president of content strategy and acquisition at UP Entertainment, said in a statement. “Celebrating the true meaning of the season is at the forefront of our selection process, and our movies celebrate the magic of the holiday season with stories about family, love, hope and faith."
See the full UPtv 2023 Christmas movie lineup — complete with the network's descriptions — below.
We’re Scrooged, starring Tamara Duarte and Andrew Bushell, on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. ET
When ex-high school sweethearts return to Minneapolis for the Christmas Snowball 10-year high school reunion weekend, they each check in to the hotel single and alone. Although their friends called them “Ross and Rachel,” Sarah and Scott parted ways after college and pursued their high-end careers. After a run-in at the kickoff event, they are both warned that they are going to be visited by three Christmas ghosts over the next three days. While dreaming each night, they have shared experiences reliving their past and present Christmases. These unsettling yet comedic visits help them both see what they gave up. And that they gave up on each other. When the Ghost of Christmas Future visits them separately, they must each make a choice to reunite or lose their love forever. Christmas Time Capsule, starring Franco Lo Presti and Emily Alatalo, on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. ET When Tiffany’s best friend James arrives at her house looking for the family heirloom engagement ring he left in her care, she quickly realizes that he wants to use it to propose to another woman. Now Tiffany has three days, a road trip and some Christmas magic to make James realize that the woman he really wants has been in front of him the whole time.
Country Hearts Christmas, starring Chris Jericho, Lanie McAuley, Katerina Maria, David Pinard and Craig Strickland, on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. ET In this sequel to October's UPtv premiere, Country Hearts, it’s days until Christmas, and the Jameson family members are all off chasing their dreams. Tori and June are in Nashville recording their first album while Bones is home on the farm getting everything ready for the whole family to be together at Christmas. But when the sisters get a chance to be on a live Christmas Eve show, one that will supercharge their budding career, they are faced with a difficult decision; they could do the show and get a much-needed boost in the industry, but it means not spending a very special Christmas with their family. Added complications arise when Tori doesn’t know if she should choose an old flame or an old friend, and June is struggling with a long-distance marriage. In the end, it’s remembering that family, faith and love is the answer to any big decision.
Mistletoe Connection, starring Jessica Sipos and Markian Tarasiuk, on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. ET Kate Snow loves everything about the holidays. From Christmas sweaters to Christmas crafts, Kate loves it all, but what really makes her jolly is Christmas time at her shop, Treasures from the Heart, that’s been in her family for generations. This year, however, a developer is moving into her quaint neighborhood and trying to turn everything she loves upside down. To make matters worse, Kate had an electric moment with a handsome stranger on a bus, but never got his name and now has no way to find him. Mark Goodwin may wear expensive suits and have a big job, but underneath it all, he loves Christmas and everything that comes with it. When he has a moment of connection with a particularly beautiful stranger — dressed as a Christmas elf no less — he goes on a mission to discover exactly who she is to make his holiday romance dreams come true. But when Mark and Kate discover that they are on opposite sides of a very personal battle, it will take all the Christmas magic in the world to bring these two together in time for a truly magical holiday.
A Christmas Homecoming on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. ET In this all-new hour-long special from the beloved Gaither Family, we celebrate all the magic and music of the holiday season. Join Bill Gaither as he presents his favorite Christmas performances from holidays past including Josh Turner and the Gaither Vocal Band. It’s a Christmas special perfect for the whole family and guaranteed to fill you with holiday joy.
Yuletide the Knot, starring Mary Antonini, Peter Porte, Kelley Jackle, Kelsey Scott and Melissa Peterman, on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. ET When small-town wedding planner Rachel is faced with planning her biggest Christmas wedding yet for an out-of-town influencer couple, she is thrown an unexpected surprise when the bride’s manager turns out to be Logan, her first love and high school sweetheart. He reminds her what it is to love, and through rediscovering the magic of Christmas, she rediscovers a part of her heart she closed off long ago.
Christmas at an Amish Bakery, starring Alexandra Harris and Sean Koetting, on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. ET After leaving her Amish community in her youth, a New York book editor finds herself in desperate need of a new cookbook to save her job. With Christmas on the horizon, Sarah heads back to her family farm to reconnect. But with the presence of a handsome local — an outsider, but one that is friendly with the Amish community — he and Sarah sense chemistry and work together to save her family’s Amish bakery (developing an Amish Christmas cookbook in the process). Dial S for Santa, starring Sarah Dugdale, Julian Haig and Lynda Boyd, on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. ET When insurance investigator Lana Lawton returns home Christmas, her only goal is to spend time with her mom and cheer up her nephew who is upset that his military father won’t make it home for Christmas. When she arrives, however, she discovers that a string of robberies along Main Street has the shop owners scratching their heads over who could have done it. Seeing her chance to earn a big promotion by doing some real P.I. work, Lana puts all of her efforts into trying to solve the case by any means necessary. Now, with Christmas Eve approaching and her suspect list narrowing, Lana must convince Nick, the police chief, to let her help with the investigation. As the pair start spending more and more time together on the case, they begin to see each other as more than co-investigators. Can Lana and Nick solve the case in time for Christmas and will Lana’s lead suspect disappear on Christmas even with a sleigh full of stolen goods? It may just take a lot of faith and a good bit of Christmas magic for a happily ever after!
A Christmas Letter, starring Colin Mochrie, David Lipper, Enrico Colantoni and Glenda Bragzana, on Sunday, Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. ET A Christmas Letter is a modern love story-meets-epic adventure that ultimately brings a family together with an uplifting, feel-good look at how the spirit of the holidays – and help from some pro hockey players – can unite a community and new-found friendships. This is a tale of how love, compassion and a little Christmas sparkle can bring us together when we need it the most.

I looked back at you with dark eyes when you stood in between us and you stopped me, my body continuing to shake and my jaw set in a hard line. I took a deep breath before finally relaxing just slightly, focusing on you and listening to your words. I knew that you were right and if I killed him, I would be leaving you again and that was the last thing that I wanted. I stay close to you as you spoke to him, my other arm wrapping around your waist as I kept you close to me in case he tried anything again. I was relieved to hear you stand up for yourself. I glared at him, glad that he finally left and I finally let out a deep breath once he was gone. I lean my forehead up against yours, wiping your tears away. "Of course I forgive you. You have nothing to be sorry about. You were right to be wary of me.. But more importantly, are you alright? Do you need some ice?," I ask you, placing my hands on either side of your face. "I am so goddamn sorry that this is what has been going on while I was away.. I have a surprise for you then but I want to make sure you are better before I show you. It's always been you, too, Jessica. You are the only woman I have ever loved and could ever love.. I want to give you everything."
---
I looked you in the eyes when hearing you ask if I was okay. I chuckled softly as I looked at you. "You're asking me if I'm okay when you're the one who is bruising more than I am?" I giggled softly while running my fingers through your hair. "I think you're the one that needs ice," I blushed as I looked you in the eyes again. "I love you, and you're staying here tonight." I tell you as I smiled at you. "You can show me your surprise later, right now, I just want to take care of you like you did with me," I say honestly. "And it's not your fault about how Andrew was treating me. That had nothing to do with you," I say softly. "But he did bust up your face pretty bad," I say as I bit my lip nervously. "And what you told Andrew was right, I never really loved him but I could never love him the way I love you," I say honestly. "You were my best friend first, and my boyfriend second, we never rushed into anything. We've always had a real connection," I spoke softly. "I never had that with him. I was just trying to fill the void of being alone because I thought you weren't coming back, but I should have never doubted you." I say softly. "But for now, I'm taking care of you tonight, and you don't get to fight me over it." I chuckled softly. "I want you to go lay in bed while I get some ice for your bruises, because something tells me you're not only bruised on your face,"
__
I giggle happily when you kissed all over my face. I lay back on our bed before pulling you on top of me. I stare lovingly up into your eyes, stroking your cheek gently with my thumb. "I just love that now we get to go to all our events together, as a couple. I don't have to stress about if you're going to have a date or not or if I should bring a date in case you have a date," I giggle softly, all that stress I used to have feeling so far away now. "And now you're all mine," I say, sighing contently before pressing my lips to yours and kissing you slowly and sweetly, moving my lips slowly with your own before deepening the kiss just slightly and letting a quiet moan slip out into your mouth before I finally pulled away. "Mhm, you always taste so good... like mint," I giggle softly.
---
I smirked when you pulled me on top of you and I looked at you with dark eyes. "I definitely love that too, and we can eye fuck whenever we want and get a little crazy together." I wiggled my eyebrows at you. I chuckled softly from your words as I played with your hair. "You're my 'forever date' because I'll take you everywhere I go and I'll go everywhere you go," I grinned at you. "Yours forever and ever," I winked at you as I pecked your lips gently before kissing back deeply and moaning into your mouth as well. "Fuck, why must you always be a tease?" I smirked when the kiss was broken.

♛ Spotted on the Upper East Side…
Name: Parker Knightly Pronouns: Up To Player Age: 21 years old     Hometown: Upper East Side, NY   Occupation: Senior at Columbia University (formerly UCLA) Social Status: Insider   Faceclaim Suggestion: Ross Butler (if choosing an alternate, remember that Parker’s twin sister’s FC is Natasha Liu Bordizzo)
Who Is Parker?
“Lucky to be coming home again.”
Welcome back to the Upper East Side, Parker. How cute of us to arrive at the same time, right? I can imagine you’ve missed us all dreadfully. There’s no place like home... I’m sure you’ll be welcomed back by everyone with open arms. You’ve always been a fan favourite. You’re kind, caring and always take an interest in other people. You’ve always been popular and not just because your twin is Jessica Knightly. But you’ve never been bothered about it. Gossip doesn’t interest you and you don’t need to be adored. Ever the sensitive artist, you’d rather just focus on strumming your guitar and writing down your feelings. You’re a romantic and a sweetheart. Honestly, I find it hard to fault you, Parker. Maybe you can write a song about me. XOXO ---Gossip Girl
A Little Extra
UTP (two paragraphs of biography; helpful key points listed below -  message  if you’d like to make any changes or note in the app if you’d  rather the bio written up  for you!)
Parker is creative. They play guitar and write songs, poems and keep a dream journal just in case their subconscious is holding all the best stuff out on them. It’s always been more of a hobby than something they’d like as a career but you never know.
Is a genuine sweetheart. Parker was brought up to be kind and polite, to take an interest in other people and their feelings. They were also brought up to not take crap though so Parker doesn’t let their kindness get taken advantage of. If Parker doesn’t like someone or, more accurately, something they did, they won’t pretend it was okay.
After graduating high school, Parker headed off to UCLA , studying to become an architect. It was hard to leave home, to leave behind their friends and especially their high school sweetheart (they both agreed it was for the best but...). Things were going good, you know? Things were going fine. Parker’s parents admittedly pulled a few strings to get the transfer sorted but they are officially coming back to New York for their senior year of college. It feels right.
Three years is a long time to be gone though. Parker doesn’t expect that everyone will remember them or welcome them back with open arms (let’s be honest though, they will!). Is excited to reunite with old friends, play guitar at one of Logan Hunter’s bonfire beach parties and not have to worry about Gossip Girl posting about them. Wait.
Loves to play with fashion especially when it comes to digging out vintage pieces. Loves rare vinyls and songs that tell a story. Parker’s just trying to do their best, you know?
What Does Gossip Girl Have On Them?
UTP (if applicable; alternatively you can note their thoughts on Gossip Girl’s return!)
Connections
Jessica Knightly - the twin! Parker and Jess are super close. Jess has never needed anyone to fight her battles so Parker stays in their lane in that respect. They’re both a little dramatic, bubbly and can never say no to a good party!
Baby Beaumont - the high school sweetheart. Parker was so in love with Baby Beaumont. They were so smart, sweet and interesting. A beautiful soul. But they both agreed that when Parker went off to college, it was best to call it quits. A clean break. Yup, that was an awesome idea.
Logan Hunter, Isobel Prescott and Ceren Celik-Montgomery - Jess’ best friends and found family. Parker has known them their entire life and loves ‘em just as much as Jess. Doesn’t like what Isobel did with Jess’ then boyfriend Oliver Andrews but apparently we’re past that.
Tripp Vanderbilt - the bestie! Parker’s missed Tripp a lot and can’t wait to be in the same city as him again.

taylor swift songs/lyrics & the ships/characters that i relate them to
~ cowboy like me ~
dean winchester & castiel
never wanted love, just a fancy car. now i’m waiting by the telephone, like i’m sitting in a airport bar. you had some tricks up your sleeve, takes one to know one. you’re a cowboy like me.
~ forever and always ~
abed nadir & troy barnes
and i stare at the phone, he still hasn’t called. and then you feel so low you feel nothing at all. and you flashback to when he said “forever and always”. oh, and it rains in your bedroom, everything is wrong. it rains when you’re here and it rains when you’re gone.
~ you are in love ~
kaz brekker and inej ghafa
you kiss on sidewalks, you fight and you talk. one night he wakes, strange look on his face. pauses then says, “you’re my best friend” and you knew what it was. he is in love.
~ marjorie ~
yelena belova
i should’ve asked you questions, i should’ve asked you how to be. asked you to write it down for me. should’ve kept every grocery store receipt. ‘cause every scrap of you would be taken from me.
~ cornelia street ~
nina zenik & matthias helvar
i hope i never lose you, hope it never ends. i’d never walk cornelia street again. that’s the kind of heartbreak time could never mend. i’d never walk cornelia street again. and baby, i get mystified by how this city screams your name. and baby, i’m so terrified of if you ever walk away.
~ the archer ~
james ‘bucky’ buchanan barnes
i wake in the night, i pace like a ghost. the room is on fire, invisible smoke. and all my heroes die alone, help me hold onto you. i’ve been the archer. i’ve been the prey. screaming, who could ever leave me, darling? but who could stay? (i see right through me, i see right through me)
~ new romantics ~
jessica day, nick miller, cece parikh, winston schmidt, winston bishop & coach.
‘cause baby i could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me. and every day is like a battle but every night with us is like a dream. baby, we’re the new romantics. come on, come along with me. heartbreak is the national anthem, we sing it proudly. we are too busy dancing, to get knocked off our feet.
~ don’t blame me ~
jude duarte & cardan greenbriar
and, baby, for you, i would fall from grace. just to touch your face. if you walk away, i’d beg you on my knees to stay. don’t blame me, love made me crazy. if it doesn’t you ain’t doin it right. lord, save me, my drug is my baby. i’d be usin’ for the rest of my life.
~ never grow up ~
scott lang, to cassie lang.
oh, darlin’, don’t you ever grow up. don’t you ever grow up. just stay this little. oh, darlin’, don’t you ever grow up. don’t you ever grow up. it could stay this simple. i won’t let nobody hurt you, won’t let no one break your heart, and no one will desert you. just try to never grow up, never grow up.
~ coney island ~
bucky barnes, post infinity war
and if this is the long haul, how did we get here so soon? did i close my fist around something delicate? did i shatter you? and i’m sitting on a bench in coney island wondering, “where did my baby go?”
~ last kiss ~
peter parker (andrew garfield) & gwen stacy
i never thought we’d have a last kiss, never imagined we’d end like this. your name, forever the name on my lips. just like our last kiss. forever the name on my lips.
~ dress ~
bucky barnes & sam wilson
flashback when you met me. your buzzcut and my hair bleached long. even in my worst times, you could see the best of me. flashback to my mistakes, my rebounds, my earthquakes. even in my worst lies, you saw the truth in me. and i woke up just in time. now i wake up by your side.
~ renegade ~
sirius black & remus lupin
are you really gonna talk about timing in times like these? and let all your damage damage me. and carry your baggage up my street. and make me your future, history, it’s time. you’ve come a long way, open the blinds, let me see your face. you wouldn’t be the first renegade to need somebody.
~ safe and sound ~
katniss everdeen & peeta mellark
i remember tears streaming down your face when i said i’ll never let you go. when all those shadows almost killed your light. i remember when you said don’t leave me here alone, but all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight. just close your eyes, the sun is going down. you’ll be alright, no one can hurt you now. come morning light, you and i’ll be safe and sound.
~ paper rings ~
alina starkov & malyen oretsev
kiss me once, cause you know i had a long night. kiss me twice, cause it’s gonna be alright. three times, cause i waited my whole life. i like shiny things but i’d marry you with paper rings, uh huh, that’s right, you’re the one i want.
and finally, my inspiration for this entire post:
~ call it what you want ~
bucky barnes & sam wilson
i’m doin better than i ever was, cause, my baby’s fit like a daydream, walking with his head down, i’m the one he’s walking to. so call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to. my baby’s fly like a jet stream, high above the whole scene, loves me like i’m brand new. so call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to.

Anonymous said: I didn’t know too much about the late British philosopher Sir Roger Scruton until I followed your superbly cultured blog. As an ivy league educated American reading your posts, I feel he is a breath of fresh air as a sane and cultured conservative intellectual. We don’t really have his kind over here where things are heavily polarized between left and right, and sadly, we are often uncivil in our discourse. Sir Roger Scruton talks a lot about beauty especially in art (as indeed you do too), so for Scruton why does beauty as an aesthetic matter in art? Why should we care?
I thank you for your very kind words about my blog which I fear is not worthy of such fulsome praise.
However one who is worthy of praise (or at least gratitude and appreciation at least) is the late Sir Roger Scruton. I have had the pleasure to have met him on a few informal occasions.
Most memorably, I once got invited to High Table dinner at Peterhouse, Cambridge, by a friend who was a junior Don there. This was just after I had finished my studies at Cambridge and rather than pursue my PhD I opted instead to join the British army as a combat pilot officer. And so I found out that Scruton was dining too. We had very pleasant drinks in the SCR before and after dinner. He was exceptionally generous and kind in his consideration of others; we all basked in the gentle warmth of his wit and wisdom.
I remember talking to him about Xanthippe, Socrate’s wife, because I had read his wickedly funny fictional satire. In the book he credits the much maligned Xanthippe with being the brains behind all of Socrates’ famous philosophical ideas (as espoused by Plato).
On other occasions I had seen Roger Scruton give the odd lecture in London or at some cultural forum.
Tumblr media
Other than that, I’ve always admire both the man and many of his ideas from afar. I do take issue with some of his intellectual ideas which seem to be taken a tad too far (he think pre-Raphaelites were kitsch) but it’s impossible to dislike the man in person.
Indeed the Marxist philosopher G.A. Cohen reportedly once refused to teach a seminar with Scruton, although they later became very good friends. This is the gap between the personal and the public persona. In public he was reviled as hate figure by some of the more intolerant of the leftists who were trying to shut him down from speaking. But in private his academic peers, writers, and philosophers, regardless of their political beliefs, hugely respected him and took his ideas seriously - because only in private will they ever admit that much of what Scruton talks about has come to pass.
In many ways he was like C.S. Lewis - a pariah to the Oxbridge establishment. At Oxford many dons poo-pooed his children stories, and especially his Christian ideas of faith, culture, and morality, and felt he should have laid off the lay theology and stuck to his academic speciality of English Literature. But an Oxford friend, now a don, tells me that many dons read his theological works in private because much of what he wrote has become hugely relevant today.
Scruton was a man of parts, some of which seemed irreconcilable: barrister, aesthetician, distinguished professor of aesthetics. Outside of brief pit stops at Cambridge, Oxford, and St Andrews, he was mostly based out of Birkbeck College, London University, which had a tradition of a working-class intake and to whom Scruton was something of a popular figure. He was also an editor of the ultra-Conservative Salisbury Review, organist, and an enthusiastic fox hunter. In addition he wrote over 50 books on philosophy, art, music, politics, literature, culture, sexuality, and religion, as well as finding time to write novels and two operas. He was widely recognised for his services to philosophy, teaching and public education, receiving a knighthood in 2016.
He was exactly the type of polymath England didn’t know what to do with because we British do discourage such continental affectations and we prefer people to know their lane and stick to it. Above all we’re suspicious of polymaths because no one likes a show off. Scruton could be accused of a few things but he never perceived as a show off. He was a gentle, reserved, and shy man of kindly manners.

He was never politically ‘Conservative’, or tried not to be. Indeed he encouraged many to think about defining “a philosophy of conservatism” and not “a philosophy for the Conservative Party.” In defining his own thoughts, he positioned conservatism to relation to its historical rivals, liberalism and socialism. He wrote that liberalism was the product of the enlightenment, which viewed society as a contract and the state as a system for guaranteeing individual rights. While he saw socialism as the product of the industrial revolution, and an ideology which views society as an economic system and the state as a means of distributing social wealth.
Like another great English thinkers, Michael Oakeshott, he felt that conservatives leaned more towards liberalism then socialism, but argued that for conservatives, freedom should also entail responsibility, which in turn depends on public spirit and virtue. Many classical liberals would agree.
In fact, he criticised Thatcherism for “its inadequate emphasis on the civic virtues, such as self-sacrifice, duty, solidarity and service of others.” Scruton agreed with classical liberals in believing that markets are not necessarily expressions of selfishness and greed, but heavily scolded his fellow Conservatives for allowing themselves to be caricatured as leaving social problems to the market. Classical liberals could be criticised for the same neglect.
Perhaps his conservative philosophy was best summed up when he wrote “Liberals seek freedom, socialists equality, and conservatives responsibility. And, without responsibility, neither freedom nor equality have any lasting value.”
Scruton’s politics were undoubtedly linked to his philosophy, which was broadly Hegelian. He took the view that all of the most important aspects of life – truth (the perception of the world as it is), beauty (the creation and appreciation of things valued for their own sake), and self-realisation (the establishment by a person of a coherent, autonomous identity) – can be achieved only as part of a cultural community within which meaning, standards and values are validated. But he had a wide and deep understanding of the history of western philosophy as a whole, and some of his best philosophical work consisted of explaining much more clearly than is often the case how different schools of western philosophy relate to one another.

People today still forget how he was a beacon for many East European intellectuals living under Communist rule in the 1980s.  Scruton was deeply attached in belonging to a network of renowned Western scholars who were helping the political opposition in Eastern Europe. Their activity began in Czechoslovakia with the Jan Hus Foundation in 1980, supported by a broad spectrum of scholars from Jacques Derrida and Juergen Habermas to Roger Scruton and David Regan. Then came Poland, Hungary and later Romania. In Poland, Scruton co-founded the Jagiellonian Trust, a small but significant organisation. The other founders and active participants were Baroness Caroline Cox, Jessica Douglas-Home, Kathy Wilkes, Agnieszka Kołakowska, Dennis O’Keeffe, Timothy Garton Ash, and others.
Scruton had a particular sympathy for Prague and the Czech society, which bore fruit in the novel, Notes from Underground, which he wrote many years later. But his involvement in East European affairs was more than an emotional attachment.  He believed that Eastern Europe - despite the communist terror and aggressive social engineering - managed to preserve a sense of historical continuity and strong ties to European and national traditions, more unconscious than openly articulated, which made it even more valuable. For this reason, decades later, he warned his East European friends against joining the European Union, arguing that whatever was left of those ties will be demolished by the political and ideological bulldozer of European bureaucracy.

Anyway, digressions aside, onto to the heart of your question.
Art matters.
Let’s start from there. Regardless of your personal tastes or aesthetics as you stand before a painting, slip inside a photograph, run your hand along the length of a sculpture, or move your body to the arrangements spiraling out of the concert speakers…something very primary - and primal - is happening. And much of it sub-conscious. There’s an element of trust.
Political philosopher, Hannah Arendt, defined artworks as “thought things,” ideas given material form to inspire reflection and rumination. Dialogue. Sometimes even discomfort. Art has the ability to move us, both positively and negatively. So we know that art matters. But the question posed by modern philosophers such as Roger Scruton has been: how do we want it to affect us?
Are we happy with the direction art is taking? Namely, says, Scruton, away from seeking “higher virtues” such as beauty and craftmanship, and instead, towards novelty for novelty’s sake, provoking emotional response under the guise of socio-political discourse.
Why does beauty in art matter?
Scruton asks us to wake up and start demanding something more from art other than disposable entertainment. “Through the pursuit of beauty,” suggests Scruton, “we shape the world as our own and come to understand our nature as spiritual beings. But art has turned its back on beauty and now we are surrounded by ugliness.” The great artists of the past, says Scruton, “were painfully aware that human life was full of care and suffering, but their remedy was beauty. The beautiful work of art brings consolation in sorrow and affirmation…It shows human life to be worthwhile.” But many modern artists, argues the philosopher, have become weary of this “sacred task” and replaced it with the “randomness” of art produced merely to gain notoriety and the result has been anywhere between kitsch to ugliness that ultimately leads to inward alienation and nihilistic despair.
The best way to understand Scruton’s idea of beauty in art and why it matters is to let him speak for himself. Click below on the video and watch a BBC documentary broadcast way back in 2009 that he did precisely on this subject, why beauty matters. It will not be a wasted hour but perhaps enrich and even enlighten your perspective on the importance of beauty in art.

So I’ll do my best to summarise the point Scruton is making in this documentary above.
Here goes.....
In his 2009 documentary “Why Beauty Matters”, Scruton argues that beauty is a universal human need that elevates us and gives meaning to life. He sees beauty as a value, as important as truth or goodness, that can offer “consolation in sorrow and affirmation in joy”, therefore showing human life to be worthwhile.
According to Scruton, beauty is being lost in our modern world, particularly in the fields of art and architecture.
I was raised in many different cultures from India, Pakistan, to China, Japan, Southern Africa, and the Middle East as well schooling in rural Britain and Switzerland. So coming home to London on frequent visits was often a confusing experience because of the mismatch of modern art and new architecture. In life and in art I have chosen to see the beauty in things, locating myself in Paris, where I am surrounded by beauty, and understand the impact it can have on the everyday.
Tumblr media
Scruton’s disdain for modern art begins with Marcel Duchamp’s urinal. Originally a satirical piece designed to mock the world of art and the snobberies that go with it, it has come to mean that anything can be art and anyone can be an artist. A “cult of ugliness” was created where originality is placed above beauty and the idea became more important than the artwork itself. He argues that art became a joke, endorsed by critics, doing away with a need for skill, taste or creativity.
Duchamp’s argument was that the value of any object lies solely in what each individual assigns it, and thus, anything can be declared “art,” and anyone an artist.
But is there something wrong with the idea that everything is art and everyone an artist? If we celebrate the democratic ideals of all citizens being equal and therefore their input having equal value, doesn’t Duchamp’s assertion make sense?
Who’s to say, after all, what constitutes beauty?
This resonated with me in particular and brought to mind when Scruton meets the artist Michael Craig-Martin and asks him about how Duchamp’s urinal first made him feel. Martin is best known for his work “An Oak Tree” which is a glass of water on a shelf, with text beside it explaining why it is an oak tree. Martin argues that Duchamp captures the imagination and that art is an art because we think of it as such.
When I first saw “An Oak Tree” I was confused and felt perhaps I didn’t have the intellect to understand it. When I would later question it with friends who worked in the art auction and gallery world, the response was always “You just don’t get it,” which became a common defence. To me, it was reminiscent of Hans Christian Andersen’s short tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, about two weavers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that they say is invisible to those who are unfit for their positions, stupid or incompetent. In reality, they make no clothes at all.
Scruton argues that the consumerist culture has been the catalyst for this change in modern art. We are always being sold something, through advertisements that feed our appetite for stuff, adverts try to be brash and outrageous to catch our attention. Art mimics advertising as artists attempt to create brands, the product that they sell is themselves. The more shocking and outrageous the artwork, the more attention it receives. Scruton is particularly disturbed by Piero Manzoni’s artwork “Artist’s Shit” which consists of 90 tin cans filled with the artist’s excrement.
Moreover the true aesthetic value, the beauty, has vanished in modern works that are selling for millions of dollars. In such works, by artists like Rothko, Franz Kline, Damien Hirst, and Tracey Emin, the beauty has been replaced by discourse. The lofty ideals of beauty are replaced by a social essay, however well intentioned.
Tumblr media
A common argument for modern art is that it is reflecting modern life in all of its disorder and ugliness. Scruton suggests that great art has always shown the real in the light of the ideal and that in doing so it is transfigured.
A great painting does not necessarily have a beautiful subject matter, but it is made beautiful through the artist’s interpretation of it. Rembrandt shows this with his portraits of crinkly old women and men or the compassion and kindness of which Velazquez paints the dwarfs in the Spanish court. Modern art often takes the literal subject matter and misses the creative act. Scruton expresses this point using the comparison of Tracey Emin’s artwork ‘My Bed’ and a painting by Delacroix of the artist’s bed.
The subject matters are the same. The unmade beds in all of their sordid disdain. Delacroix brings beauty to a thing that lacks it through the considered artistry of his interpretation and by doing so, places a blessing on his own emotional chaos. Emin shares the ugliness that the bed shows by using the literal bed. According to Emin, it is art because she says that it is so.
Philosophers argued that through the pursuit of beauty, we shape the world as our home. Traditional architecture places beauty before utility, with ornate decorative details and proportions that satisfy our need for harmony. It reminds us that we have more than just practical needs but moral and spiritual needs too. Oscar Wilde said “All art is absolutely useless,” intended as praise by placing art above utility and on a level with love, friendship, and worship. These are not necessarily useful but are needed.
We have all experienced the feeling when we see something beautiful. To be transported by beauty, from the ordinary world to, as Scruton calls it, “the illuminated sphere of contemplation.” It is as if we feel the presence of a higher world. Since the beginning of western civilisation, poets and philosophers have seen the experience of beauty as a calling to the divine.
According to Scruton, Plato described beauty as a cosmic force flowing through us in the form of sexual desire. He separated the divine from sexuality through the distinction between love and lust. To lust is to take for oneself, whereas to love is to give. Platonic love removes lust and invites us to engage with it spiritually and not physically. As Plato says, “Beauty is a visitor from another world. We can do nothing with it save contemplate its pure radiance.”
Scruton makes the prescient point that art and beauty were traditionally aligned in religious works of art. Science impacted religion and created a spiritual vacuum. People began to look to nature for beauty, and there was a shift from religious works of art to paintings of landscapes and human life.
Tumblr media
In today’s world of art and architecture, beauty is looked upon as a thing of the past with disdain. Scruton believes his vision of beauty gives meaning to the world and saves us from meaningless routines to take us to a place of higher contemplation. In this I think Scruton encourages us not to take revenge on reality by expressing its ugliness, but to return to where the real and the ideal may still exist in harmony “consoling our sorrows and amplifying our joys.”
Scruton believes when you train any of your senses you are privy to a heightened world. The artist sees beauty everywhere and they are able to draw that beauty out to show to others. One finds the most beauty in nature, and nature the best catalyst for creativity. The Tonalist painter George Inness advised artists to paint their emotional response to their subject, so that the viewer may hope to feel it too.
It must be said that Scruton’s views regarding art and beauty are not popular with the modern art crowd and their postmodern advocates. Having written several books on aesthetics, Scruton has developed a largely metaphysical aspect to understanding standards of art and beauty.
Throughout this documentary (and indeed his many books and articles), Scruton display a bias towards ‘high’ art, evidenced by a majority of his examples as well as his dismissal of much modern art. However on everyday beauty, there is much space for Scruton to challenge his own categories and extend his discussion to include examples from popular culture, such as in music, graphic design, and film. Omitting ‘low art’ in the discussion of beauty could lead one to conclude that beauty is not there.
Tumblr media
It is here I would part ways with Scruton. I think there is beauty to be found in so called low art of car design, popular music or cinema for example - here I’m thinking of a Ferrari 250 GTO,  jazz, or the films of Bergman, Bresson, or Kurosawa (among others) come to mind. Scruton gives short thrift to such 20th century art forms which should not be discounted when we talk of beauty. It’s hard to argue with Jean-Luc Godard for instance when he once said of French film pioneering director, Robert Bresson, “He is the French cinema, as Dostoevsky is the Russian novel and Mozart is German music.”
Overall though I believe Scruton does enough to leave us to ponder ourselves on the importance of beauty in the arts and our lives, including fine arts, music, and architecture. I think he succeeds in illuminating the poverty, dehumanisation and fraud of modernist and post-modernist cynicism, reductionism and nihilism. Scruton is rightly prescient in pointing the centrality of human aspiration and the longing for truth in both life and art.
In this he is correct in showing that goodness and beauty are universal and fundamentally important; and that the value of anything is not utilitarian and without meaning (e.g., Oscar Wilde’s claim that “All art is absolutely useless.”). Human beings are not purposeless material objects for mechanistic manipulation by others, and civil society itself depends upon a cultural consensus that beauty is real and every person should be respected with compassion as having dignity and nobility with very real spiritual needs to encounter and be transformed and uplifted by beauty.
Thanks for your question.

Title: Kernow Bys Vykken And Other Stories My Granfer Told Me
Song: Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
Hey, where did we go?
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow
Playin' a new game
Laughin' and a-runnin', hey, hey
Skippin' and a-jumpin'
In the misty morning fog with
Our, our hearts a-thumping and you
My brown-eyed girl
King Kitto of Kernow (Tom Hanks) is sick of his handsome son Prince Tristan (Rege Jean Page) mucking about with his best friend Jago Tressider, Earl of Penzance (Andrew Garfield). The king knows that his time on the earthly realm is nearing the end and as the oldest sibling, Prince Tristan will inherit the proud nation of Kernow. At least King Kitto has his precious daughter Princess Kerensa (Nicola Coughlan) to give him some comfort - although she’s hardly a better fit for ruling, given her preference for scholarly pursuits and her self-declared life’s work of writing a History of The Kingdom. What Prince Tristan needs is a wife, and luckily, there’s one going in Wessex, a Princess Tiffany of Wessex and Mercia. King Kitto sends his son and Jago off to retrieve his bride, hoping that he’ll come back from the journey a more mature man ready to rule. On their journey, Tristan and Jago encounter, amongst other things, the witch of Dartmoor (Connie Britton), a handsome knight named Clive (Dev Patel) who Jago develops an affection for, and a street urchin who calls herself Knife (Jessica Sula) who Tristan finds compelling indeed. Will Tristan learn the value of hard work? Will Jago confess his feelings for Clive the Knight? Will Kerensa ever finish her book? And why is Knife behaving so weirdly the closer they get to Malmesbury, the capital of Wessex?
