Physical mit Andrew McMillan und Tom Wlaschiha
YouTube Geistesblüten - 25th May 2023
GEISTESBLÜTEN AUTOREN BÜCHER KÜNSTLER
Anyone who reads Andrew McMillan's "Physical" is immediately in the body. And immediately a lot of questions arise. Being a human being…. What is that supposed to be? Who actually determines what we are allowed to do in order to belong to a group? How does one become a rule-maker? Who wants to be such a person anyway? What do we feel? When do we feel? Can feelings be written down at all? Or are such transcripts always just sketches? In comparison to the original feelings. Andrew's lyrics make you rethink your own existence. Physicality is only one aspect of his texts. Andrew finds words for emotions which resonate when we become "physical". But he also captures our emotional corset. It sticks to us like a second skin. We can't take it off. Even when we are alone.

“…and feel the water moving through him / and knowing that this is love the prone flesh / what we expel from the body and what we leave”

400 years later the poet Andrew McMillan investigates Michelangelo's poems, talking to Dr Ambra Moroncini, who, as Senior Lecturer, teaches them at the University of Sussex; to Professor Konrad Eisenbichler who, as well as literature, taught a course on sexuality and gender in the Renaissance at the University of Toronto.
Colin Matthews, who was Benjamin Britten's assistant, talks about his 'Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo'. The composer's setting was a love gift to his partner, Peter Pears.
McMillan discovers growing interest in Michelangelo's poems today, especially among queer writers. Alex Cocker has just published 'Say, Spirit' in which they make versions of the sonnets, each three times, in the voices of three imagined translators.
They all talk of Michelangelo - the poet - and we hear his poems, translated by James M. Saslow, read by Sir Simon Russell Beale.

[from "Protest of the Physical" by Andrew McMillan
"kissing while trains swim lenghts outside
one platform station a delay to the
thrust of in and out
your kiss was deep enough to stand in"]
[From "Happy" by Mitski
"So he laid me down, and I felt happy come inside of me
He laid me down, and I felt happy
[Chorus]
Oh, if you're going, take the train
So I can hear it rumble, one last rumble
And when you go, take this heart
I'll make no more use of it when there's no more you"]
