You went to a garage sale to see what you could find. You had been working on so many projects that you were hoping to get parts for cheap, when you saw an Andrew the Android. He was sitting on a table, swinging his feel that barely scraped the ground. He was an early version. It was easy to tell by his stocky build, and the way he barely looked humanoid. Newer ones looked more human.
“How much is he?” you asked the man sitting by a lock box, pointing to Andrew.
“You don’t want that one,” the man grinned, showing off all his teeth in a way that made you frown. “It’s a weird one. Sent it up to clean my gutters in a storm, you know, testing out that ‘waterproof’ feature.”
“Uh-huh,” you said unsurely, shifting on your feet slightly.
“And it got struck by lightening. Been odd ever since. Telling me to call it ‘Andy’ and asking me questions. Didn’t think these ones of them were meant to be so annoyingly human.”
“I still want him. How much?” you insisted.
You and the man go back and forth for a bit before you finally handed him a small wad of cash. A giddy feeling fluttered in your chest as you approached him. He looked up at you, a blank look on his expressionless face.
“Hi there. I’m Y/N. I just bought you,” you explained as you offered him your hand. “I’m so excited that I found an early Andrew. You’re one of my favorite androids of all time.”
“Andy, please,” was his response. He held up his hands, no, claws, as if to apologize for not shaking yours. “It’s nice to meet you.”
You brought him home, and he settled in quickly. One day, he greeted you at the door.
“Can you make me hands?” he asked.
“Why? Your claws work better, and you can swap them out with other attachments,” you asked back as you started gathering things for the project you were working on.
“I want to pet your cat.”
“You can’t even feel her fur though.”
“But she can. And I want her to like me petting her.”
You paused, thinking for a moment. “Alright. I can build you hands.”
“I also want to learn guitar. Can you make sure I have good fingers?”
That made a grin crack your face. “Yes, I’ll make you good fingers.”
You two lived in good harmony for awhile, until one day, he showed you a book. “Why is one character being called ‘they’?”
“Oh, because they’re non-binary.”
He nodded as he went back to the book. “I think that fits me better than he.”
You nodded back at them, scrolling through your phone. “Okay.”
Another day, they come to you, holding a book with a picture of a flute. “Can you build me a mouth? And move my port?”
“You want to learn to play the flute?” you asked curiously, looking at the book, their fingers curling around the pages.
“Yes.”
“Alright.”
They took to the flute much better than the guitar, but you don’t say anything. Even when they wake you up in the middle of the night. They’re still not very good, but you enjoy hearing their progress.
Yet again, they come to you, showing you a magazine with synthetic skin and hair on an android. They don’t say anything as they hand it to you, looking down.
“Okay. I’ll take you in and let you pick everything out,” you say as you hand them back the magazine.
“Do you think I’ll really be able to feel?” they asked nervously, rolling the magazine up into a tube.
“Maybe. Why?”
They looked away, and you thought if they were human, they would have blushed. “I want to pet your cat.”
“You pet her all the time.”
“I want to be able to feel it too.”
As always, you nodded. “It’s worth a shot at least then, right?”
Andy went in many times for many more modifications on top of the ones they asked you to make for them. Over the span of months, but in a way that hit you all at once, you fell in love with them. The way they laughed. How excited they were to learn. How excited they were to just be.
“Hey, Y/N! Andy! Welcome in yous guys. I got the room set up. Andy’s got a surprise for you, Y/N. You’re gonna let Andy pick out everything as always, yeah?” the mechanic greeted the two of you as you stepped inside.
You thought it was a little odd she just kept saying “Andy” instead of “they” but you brushed it off. “Yeah Sal. It’s Andy’s body. They can do what they want.”
Andy and Sal shared a grin before you were ushered into the waiting room. A couple hours later, a dark haired woman came out, her hair styled into a neat bun on the top of her head. Her eyes were green, your favorite color. There was a softness to her face and features, as well as a stockiness to her build. She reminded you of Andy, in a way, so you returned her smile.
Sal came up behind you, gesturing to the woman. “What do you think?”
“Oh she’s lovely, perfectly stunning, but you know I’m just waiting on Andy,” you said with a frown and furrow of your brows.
“Hi Y/N,” the woman said shyly, looking down at her feet.
“Andy?”
“I mean, I guess, but I want a new name.”
“What is it?”
“I don’t know yet.”
You tilted your head, looking at her curiously. “But you already know every name that there is to know.”
A sweet smile touched her lips as she walked over to you, taking your hands in hers. “I don’t know how they sound when you say them yet.”

Here Tumblr, you can see it first. I'm making social media posts because that's just part of what you do as an indie author/artist/anything these days and I'm prepping stuff for my upcoming crowdfunding campaign of my debut novella The Warm Machine. It's live now as part of Booktopia - a massive indie publishing even hosted by BackerKit.
Anyway, I'm making all these graphics and callouts and everything and I'm not going to post to Tumblr daily because that's just not how things work here.
Let me tell you about the book real quick: It follows the story of two robots with two vastly different jobs who run away together in search of a fabled robot utopia. I admit it's really not anything new, but it's totally my love-letter to the sci-fi community as a whole. I packed everything I love about sci-fi into these 3 bots' bodies.
Sterling is our main character and the POV of the book. He's a foreman style construction robot, also known as a laborbot. He's responsible for carrying out the daily operations of his container crew robots. Strong, durable, and curious, Sterling asks many questions even if he is not always guaranteed an answer. Loyal to a fault and quick to trust, he’ll follow Zev to the ends of the Earth.
Next up is Zev, Sterling's love interest. He's an overpowered military prototype bot with a curious set of "classified" schematics. Tricky, cool, and calculating, Zev always says what he means but never shows exactly what he’s thinking. With a soul too big for his robotic body, he sees in Sterling what Sterling is unable to see in himself.
Last but not least is Inix, a personal style android model. Meant for home use and other human comforts, she sports a customized cosmetic skin of crushed black opal. Cheery and bubbly, Inix has a way with words – along with a peculiar way of getting information. Inix delivers a dimensionality to the other two androids that only an emotionally-complex bot can – or at least one that’s programmed to fake it well.
If this is your thing, you can reserve a copy NOW. It will be available in ebook formats (PDF to start, probably also epub, I just have to figure out how to do these things along the way), paperback, and hardcover. There's also goodies you can get for participating with me and my partner's project, as well as with Booktopia as a whole. Ebooks cost as little as $5 and you'd be greatly helping out an indie author if you throw your five bux in!
I hope you'll join me on this adventure! I'm ridiculously excited to get this out into the world so you can love my silly robots as much as I do.

Fun fact: Philip K. Dick in the original "Do androids dream of electric sheep" used androids as a metaphor for people with low empathy. This vision, however didn't get to the film adaptation (1982) where the narrative got changed (which is not a bad or good thing. Just curious how androids are used to refer to different things in fiction)
Some Philip's quotes from this interview:
For me the word ‘android’ is a metaphor for people who are physiologically human but psychologically behaving in a non-human way.
---
I got interested in this when I was doing research for "the man in a high castle" and I was studying Nazi mentality, and I discovered although these people were highly intelligent they were definitely deficient in some manner <...> and as I studied the Nazi mentality <...> I became conscious of a very highly intelligent human being who is emotionally so defective that the word "human" could not properly be applied to him, and I used this in my writing in such terms as "Android" and "Robot" but I'm really referring to an actually psychologically defective or malfunctioning or pathological human being
---
By the time I got to sheep I was revolutionary enough and existential enough to believe that these defective personalities were so lethal, so dangerous to human beings that it might be necessary ultimately to fight them. In other words that they could not be cured they cannot be changed and that it might literally wind up as a contest to see whether the humans won or "Androids" won. Now, the problem then would be that would we become like the androids in our really effort to wipe them out?
---
If you kill a person because he is inhuman do you not become inhuman in the act of killing him?

Book Rec: The AI Who Loved Me, by Alyssa Cole
Tumblr media
Two traumatized people finding love in each other! One of them happens to be an android. Well-written, lots of sexual tension (and a little sex!), themes of capitalism and imperialism, and the android in question is treated like a person (low bar but unfortunately not always cleared).

This is an introduction for both myself and my main project. I'm Val! While my main blog is over on @val-the-bun, this is the main page for my android anthology project.
I am a trans and disabled writer and editor - I've worked quite closely with my fellow writer @shera-dnd. My main project is D'Anna - Android Detective Anthology, a series of Science Fiction Detective stories set on an alternative future earth. A world of airships and megacities, built by the androids that take center stage within this series.
The story follows the titular character D'Anna, an android trans-woman, living and working in the towering city of New Concord. Once she was the servant of a rich man, now she's searching for answers about who she is, and what her place in the world is now that she's free.
You can find more information about this project over at this page's Hub. You can also check out the wonderful art that has been made for this series so far over in the Artist Gallery. And you can help to support me and this project over on my Ko-fi!

I want to show you the cover my friend Kira did for a sci-fi novel I published recently, and I would love to share with all of you.
The plot itself it's about a female android, Ellinor, who works for an important lawyer named Arnolfini. During a winter evening, an activist for androids' rights breaks in Arnolfini's studio and brings Ellinor away.
The replicant, during the long period among the rebels, will discover an hard truth that will bring her to a life changing decision.
So, if you love feminist sci-fi stories, this is the book for you!

Please help me I am so bad with technology (yes I'm twenty three and am so so bad with technology)
I'm trying to play around with ao3s 'new work' page to get the hang of it, but when I copy and paste Chap 1 into the box, it doesn't keep the formatting at all. I've tried googling, It didn't help ( it could also be my fault, lol).
How do I copy and paste my work I to that box while keeping all my italics and such?! It's over 30k words at this point, and I don't want to do it manually 😳
For context, I'm using a Samsung phone for this, I don't have a laptop. I do have a tablet if that is better. It's also a Samsung. And I've been writing on Google docs (mobile)
Also- follow up question for later: how do I post multiple chapters into one work?
