I felt like Defan really started to get deep and complex in S3 the writers finally started giving us more of their past to explain why after apparently "hating" each other for 150+ years they kept saving each other. I would have loved a flashback to the '20s with Damon in Chicago (since like you said we all know he was there), I would have liked to see even a confrontation between the two of them. Damon HATED Ripper Stefan, he was always on edge around him and I would have really liked to see how that stemmed from him seeing Ripper Stefan in all his glory in the '20s and that giving background to that uncomfortableness. Would have made perfect sense if he was the one who outted Stefan to Lexi and that's how she found him, he knew he couldn't fix Stefan but he believed Lexi could.

I do love animals. I breed quail for meat and eggs, and that means that yes, I kill some of my birds, just as I kill some of my mice who are unsuitable for pet homes or unnecessary for breeding, just as I have sent overtly aggressive peafowl that would be dangerous to other birds or humans home with someone to be dinner.

Loving animals and understanding meat source animals must be killed to be eaten and that domesticated husbandry requires some amount of hard culling for the benefit of the breeding program and species as a whole are not mutually exclusive ideas. It is my job to give my animals good, proper care, enrichment, and love until their time in this world is over (for some that's sooner than others), to ensure that death is as humane as possible, and to ensure that as little as possible goes to waste after.

And almost nothing here does go to waste; offal or unusable parts goes to the crows and other scavengers I feed at the front of the house (and in turn they chase off nosy hawks and eagles), meat gets eaten, bones get used to make stock and then composted for the garden. Mouse culls and quail feeder culls (quail hatched specifically to be feeders for other animals) almost all go to reptile owners who want ethically sourced animals kept in better conditions/fed better feed (the exception is when Bug eats some of them instead). And the two times I have ever had to cull aggressive peafowl, they both went to a hunting family that made use of the meat.

Additionally, on several occasions now, I have been called upon by others to help euthanize their fowl friends. Strangers who couldn't afford a vet bill but wanted to put an end to their bird's suffering. Strangers that knew it needed to be done but couldn't do it themselves, or that didn't know how. I have taught others how to do cervical dislocation in case the need arrives ever again, so the bird doesn't have to wait. I have held sobbing owners who thanked me for being able to do what they couldn't even when they knew it was necessary. And yes, I have demonstrated the butchering process to folks who want quail meat, so that I know they're giving a quick, humane end to their birds.

Death is a part of life. When you raise purpose animals, death is going to be a part of the deal at some point.

It doesn't mean I love them any less while they're here, or in general.

okay so basically, let's say you see a post on your dash

before the update, if you clicked on a url, you could do 3 things:

view that specific reblog on the blog you follow (A)

view the previous reblog on the blog A reblogged it from (B)

view the original post on op's blog (C)

however, staff recently implemented an update where clicking on a url no longer takes you to that specific post. now, clicking on a url just takes you to the blog itself.

this means that you now get 5 things:

view ONLY that specific reblog on the blog you follow (A) -> changed location near header. also, you will now ONLY see that post and nothing else

view ONLY the original post on op's blog (C) -> changed location near header. you will only see that post and nothing else. and ONLY if the op hasn't deleted it, otherwise it just shows an error

view the blog of the person you follow (D)

view the blog of the person D reblogged it from (F) -> option B no longer exists

view the blog of the op (E)

you might be thinking: "cool! i get more options so that's good, right?" well, no.

there are SEVERAL things wrong with this and it goes beyond the prev tags issue

1) first of all, it's counterintuitive that A and C changed locations to the area near the header, especially if your userbase was already used to the previous functions. it just seems like horrible UX design to me but let's put that aside for now.

2) as you can see, option B which allowed you to see the previous reblog of a post no longer exists.

now, if you click on the previous url, you will just be taken to their entire blog. you can no longer view the post itself.

someone asked staff about this, and they replied in this post that the change was INTENTIONAL and if you want to view the previous reblog you would have to "go through the notes view".

to borrow what someone else said:

basically, this update just killed the prev tags culture in one fell swoop.

(sure, you can still use it to reply directly to the person you're reblogging from, but it's now literally useless to use "prev tags" for everyone else involved. sure, you can choose to copy tags or peer review them, but again, if people will have to copy them then the less people are likely to use them, and not every prev lends itself to peer-reviewing imo)

now, listen. i know not everyone likes the prev tags culture, but it just seems like such a poorly-thought decision to kill a culture that like... half of your entire userbase uses (see this poll as a quick reference) and that's UNIQUE to your site and sets you apart from other social media.

but it's also not even just prev tags. let's say you want to remove an annoying addition on a post's reblog chain? you can no longer do that.

however, i feel like this is the most important point:

regardless of how you may feel about the prev tags culture, the pure UI aspect of it should remain

what i mean by this is: even if you don't like prev tags, simply 1) being able to access the reblog chain, and 2) clicking on a post and actually have it take you to their BLOG (and not just a page with that one single post) is literally essential navigation.

this update threatens to drive down user engagement (which is already critically low) by making it harder to navigate. which is actually another point:

3) even if you click on A and C now to view those specific posts, it's NOT the same as it used to be.

before, you could view the reblog directly on the blog. so you could just scroll down and see the other posts leading up to it. now, you will be taken to a page where you will ONLY see that post and nothing else.

but also, you can no longer easily navigate other people's blogs.

you know how sometimes you would see like 50 notifications of someone going through an entire tag on your blog? that's going to happen a lot less, i'm afraid.

let's suppose you want to go to op's blog because they're an artist and you want to see more of their art. so you click on C and see that the tag they use for posts with their art is "#my art"

cool! before, you could just click on that tag and immediately view ALL of their art as long as the posts have that tag.

but now, if you click on that tag, it will take you to the ENTIRE tumblr tag with literally all the posts that everyone in the history of time has tagged with that specific tag.

now, to do the same thing that just took 2 clicks before, you would have to: click on C to view the post -> look for the tag you want to navigate -> click E to view their whole blog -> scroll and look for a post that just so happens to have that tag (the search function is literally useless) and hope to god that there's a recent one or you'll have to scroll for ages or simply give up -> if you happen to find it, click on that tag to navigate their posts.

you see how this is counterproductive, right? you see how this can literally drive down engagement with content creators, right?

if you make people's blogs harder to navigate, you will literally drive down the number of likes and reblogs on their posts, which have already been steadily declining for years now.

4) options D and E to view the blogs and not the posts are literally useless because you could already access other people's blogs before. you just had to click on their url to view their blogs starting from that specific post AND you could choose to just refresh it to view their newest posts.

either way, the change just seems completely unnecessary. and again, it's not just about the prev tags culture but about basic UI.

so what can we do about it?

i normally don't advocate for flooding staff with messages but i do feel like this is one of the worst updates staff has ever done (and that's saying something) and something needs to change.

even if they don't retcon the entire update, that's fine, but staff could at least add the option to view the reblog chain as a different feature (maybe even opt-in) for example. there are better ways to go about this than just axing an entire existing feature.

also, this same issue that makes it harder to navigate blogs needs to change. i feel like content creators will be especially affected by this unless this changes because you can no longer easily navigate their tags, so it will inevitably drive down engagement.

so please, contact staff and let them know we want a change.

Regardless of the "prev tags" culture itself, the UI aspect of being able to view the reblog chain of a post is essential for navigation on this website. Even adding it as a separate, opt-in feature would be a huge help. Additionally, clicking on a post and then on one of the tags now takes you to the entire tumblr tag instead of the tag on that blog, which makes it harder to navigate blogs. Both of these issues have the potential to drive down user engagement by actively making it harder to navigate Tumblr, but especially for content creators. Out of all the ships on TVD, why do u ship Stefan and Caroline?

I ship them for several reasons.

Their differing personalities created an interesting relationship dynamic. Caroline was bright, bubbly, and extroverted. Stefan was introverted, brooding, and serious. Although it sounds like they wouldn’t get along, they brought out the best in each other. Caroline was able to get Stefan to smile and dance, while Stefan calmed Caroline’s neurotic tendencies.

Stefan and Caroline were best friends before they fell in love. They genuinely enjoyed each other’s company and trusted each other. Neither felt the need to change the other person. They accepted each other just the way they were.

Stefan and Caroline supported and mentored each other. They turned to each other whenever they had problems controlling their bloodlust.

Stefan and Caroline don’t have to pretend with each other. They’re comfortable showing their dark side because they both have a dark side.

Caroline never gets between Stefan & Damon the way Elena and Katherine did. I was tired of Stefan & Damon pining after the same woman by season 4 so Steroline felt fresh and fun.

I wish I could find the video and link it but I am the worst person to ask about con videos I just watch whatever I see randomly show up on my Twitter feed if it's Paul and Candice. I'm pretty sure it's the one from 2019 where Candice has short hair, that one in particular had some funny moments between them so I think that's why I saw clips of it a lot. I kind of vaguely remember him saying that but I don't think he was being malicious with that, I think he was just trying to say that Candice is a lot like Caroline because they're both bubbly happy people. Sure! Like I said, I probably won't ever write a fic with this (between NaNo and promise, I just don't have the time), but I'm happy to share.

So as I mentioned in my tag, it's less an OC than an overdevelopment of a character mentioned in passing. Specifically, the girl in S2E14 - the one whose parents owned the laptop the copy of the Voice that would later become the Guide was downloaded onto.

My idea about her was that she felt an immediate kinship with the Voice because she, too, was chafing at the restrictions of her parents and wanted to see the world and learn new things. After getting the Voice in to the hospital to see the old man, she decided not to go back home and instead went out of town for a night or two to "camp" in the wilderness, just to think. She got the idea that maybe the old man would take her on as an apprentice, that she could maybe make up for having helped her friends vandalize his things by learning from him, and that she and the Voice could see the world and learn together.

When she went back into town, though, she found that her mother had also been hospitalized - for much the same reason as the old man had, a heart attack brought on by stress over her missing child. And when she went to the hospital to see her (and, as it turned out, to say her goodbyes), she found out that the old man had died as well.

She still wanted to learn things, and see the world, and she also couldn't get the Voice out of her head. The laptop had been returned, but the Voice was gone, and nobody seemed to know what had happened to the old man's things. She at first thought about studying computer science, but that didn't seem right; she didn't want to create a new Voice, she wanted to find the original one. Her friend. So instead she started studying anthropology, because she figured a degree in folklore and mythology might eventually lead her to urban legends and from there to her friend. She also, almost on a whim, took a course in clockmaking, driven by some instinct she didn't quite understand.

After graduation, she wound up getting a job at a small museum of mechanical wonders as a sort of combination of restoration and research. Shortly after taking the job, she was presented with an unusual exhibit that had been broken for many years: a clockwork woman made of brass, who had been found surrounded by parts and half-finished clockwork replicas. Could she get the machine running? she was asked. No one knew where this clockwork woman had come from, or who had built her, but she was so intricate; she was one of the most popular exhibits, and everyone wondered how she would function. The owner of the small museum explained that this was a challenge given to all new hires, and there would be a prize if she succeeded.

The young woman studied the clockwork woman, and the parts surrounding her, and got to work. And much to everyone's surprise, she got the woman working again.

The Clockwork Mother - who refused to allow anyone to call her that, as she was not their mother - did indeed become a more popular exhibit, sitting in a glass room and patiently continuing to try and recreate her perfect daughter. The young woman had offered to help, but been politely but firmly rebuffed, and so contented herself with repairing the exhibits - part of her "prize", a promotion at work to the head of restoration and research (something of a joke, in the young woman's opinion, because not long after the people theoretically serving under her were let go; then again, maybe her prize was that she was the only one to keep her job). But the Clockwork Mother had given her an idea. Could she create something like that? Would it be possible, if she worked at it, to build a clockwork body that could upload an artificial brain - and a Voice - from another file?

Could she build her friend a physical form?

So, yeah, that was my headcanon/fic idea. The thought was that the Mistholme Museum buys out this little museum she works at, she gets hired as part of the package, she meets the Guide, she recognizes him instantly, and she offers him the body if he wants it.

Question out of curiousity: Since peafowl are protein addicts and (try to) eat mice and fish and the like, do they also eat chicks? Like birds cannibalizing their own or another hen's chicks, or if a chicken or quail chick were to get into a peafowl pen, would that be dangerous?

I've never seen a peafowl go for peachicks in a way that would suggest they wanted to eat them, although I have seen aggression between hens over chicks, and aggression from older siblings to younger (jealous of the babies getting mom's attention). I know there are some peafowl in captive situations that have killed their own chicks (a friend of mine has a hen that won't tolerate white or BS chicks, they MUST be brown or she kills them), but I've never heard of a pea eating their own or anyone else's peachicks.

HOWEVER. All bets are off for anyone else's chicks. The first time I hatched quail chicks, Bug was dancing and begging for whatever I had in my hands, and I thought well, we're in the mouse room, she probably thinks I have mice in my hands and she's allowed to eat mice. Surely if I show her I actually have a baby bird- oh, nope. She's eaten it. Gone as quick as any mouse. ZERO hesitation on her part. So. I also no longer keep chickens (at all, but especially not) in the peafowl pens because I used to have hackle chickens (bantams) and one of them hatched a half dozen chicks... and they all got eaten by the peafowl by that afternoon. So that was the end of that. I had only had them in there because my BCM, which were BIG standard breed chickens, had not had a problem, and I (mistakenly) assumed that peafowl would not try to eat other birds that were small enough. I never had a problem with them attacking the bobwhites (probably because the bobwhites, though tiny, were full of Fuck You), but the peafowl DID eat all their eggs. All of them. I thought my birds just were not laying but no. the peafowl were following them around and eating the eggs as soon as they were laid. I tested putting one coturnix in the pea pen (hoping for a clean up crew for any spilled food), but the peafowl instantly attempted murder (unsuccessful, since I was standing over the quail) so. That's a no on cohab there, either. It's been a learning curve over the last 16 years, since no one seemed to have answers.

The rule with peafowl is definitely that if it fits in their mouth, that IS where they will put it. Thankfully, prion diseases don't really seem to happen in birds.
