How do you design your patterns for knitting?? They are so pretty! 😍
In Excel (or the spreadsheet program of your choice*). First I set the ratio of the cells so each cell is one stitch. Double knitting, like for the blanket is a 2:3 ratio, roughly, which means that every two stitches across is about the same length as three stitches upwards. So I set the width of each column to 0.3 cm and the height of each cell to 0.2 cm. (For contrast, standard colourwork is usually closer to a 4:5 ratio, so don't use double knitting diagrams for single knitting or vice versa)
(Weirdly, in Excel you only seem to be able to adjust in centimetres if you put the spreadsheet in print view first, so it looks like different pages, idk why. Excel sucks like that I guess.)
*Not Google Sheets, because last time I checked it doesn't allow background images. This may have changed since.
Then I put a thick black border around the limits of my pattern. For the baby blankets it's about 176 columns by 264 rows, though the width is subject to change a little based on the pattern (if I decide on a repeating border it has to be divisible by the right number), and if I change that, I might adjust the length as well because I want the blankets to be roughly square.
Once that's done, I decide on a theme and a rough idea of what I want it to look like. For my most recent blanket I knew I wanted mountains because my friends like to hike. I knew I wanted space because one of them is really into space stuff. And I knew I wanted chickens because the other has chickens that she loves.
When I know roughly what elements I want to include, I do an image search for silhouettes of that thing. This is one of the reasons I haven't made any of the patterns available, because copyright. I do transform the images I find, and some of the elements (borders, patterns) are entirely from my own mind, but there's a lot that's based off images I find. I don't specifically go searching for creative commons images because it's personal use and the only place I even show pictures of them is here on Tumblr. Like I said, I transform them, and it's personal use, so I'm pretty sure I'm clear just making my blankets for my friends, but any further might be questionable. Idk. Copyright is a thorny sort of a thing.
ANYWAY. I get a silhouette image (silhouettes because they're clearer, although one of the chickens on the latest blanket is from a photograph, but that's trickier to work with). Then I set it as the background of my Excel spreadsheet.
One interesting thing about Excel is that the zooming in and out doesn't affect the background image like it does the cells, so I zoom in or out until the image is about the size I want in relation to the size of the whole blanket. Then I colour in the cells on top of it. At first it's just the cells that are completely filled in in the image below, then it's the ones that are half filled in or more.
Once that's done, I remove the background image and I fuck around with what's left (essentially a pixel art version of the silhouette). This is the stage that takes a lot of time, because there's often a lot of tweaking to do to make it look good. Fine lines and curves are difficult, and sometimes things just need to be changed. For instance, the owl on my most recent blanket started out life as a long-eared owl and I changed it into a barn owl because that suited my aesthetic more. The mouse I adjusted the size of multiple times and the shape of the back and the ears and the nose... and the tail... to make it fit the space I wanted it in and also to make it look more mouse-like. Literally changing one cell can make a huge difference to how something looks, it's crazy.
For borders and decorative bits, I tend to just mess around with colouring in the cells in swirly patterns until I come up with a shape I like. Repeating patterns are a lot easier to do, but do require you to do maths to make sure they fit properly. This probably requires patience, but I find it strangely addictive and zen-like.
For the ivy on my last one, I used silhouettes for the leaves, then used the transform tools in excel to mirror the five or six different leaf silhouettes I had vertically and horizontally, then moved them around and connected them with twisting lines to create the impression of vines.
Once I've got all the separate pieces, I copy them all into the outline I have of the blanket and move them around (it's important to keep the originals separate, because when you move things in excel you can often copy over something and chop off an ear or a tail or half a bird).
But yeah, then I move stuff around until the layout works for me. Sometimes at this point I have to resize things, which is annoying.
Then, when I've got things roughly in place, I mess around with them some more until they look right. It's a lot of trial and error at this stage
For example, in the dragon and unicorn blanket I did, the dragon's tail was messed around with a lot at this point. I had it curling one way, then the other way. I made it really long. I made it really short. I had it end with spikes. I had it end with the spade.
As a final touch, I then add the more random details that don't need as much work, like the stars or the snowflakes, which are fairly easy to just design on the spot. I move those around as well, until I'm happy with them.
Then I start knitting.
The design does often evolve as I'm knitting. For instance, after seeing how the tension worked on the mouse in my most recent blanket, I realised that the planet was going to be stretched thin the way I had initially designed it, so I tweaked it to be fatter so it would appear more round in the finished product. Similarly I added some more leaves to the tree and moved the top branch down a bit for better framing.
That got kind of long, but I hope it helps.

hi I have a question thats kind of general in terms of gaming. Mastering mechanics or maxing some if not all aspects of certain games is pretty enjoyable to me and obviously I appreciate that about some of the stuff you do, my question is on whether you think mastery most readily comes from actually using guides and online references or people who just do and explore every crevice of everything themselves. I had like a two hour convo with a friend but she couldnt really figure out an answer!
aw i appreciate it lol
tbh i don’t think i can say either way though because… i think both are required, usually? it does also depend on the game some i think, but like, for example i literally only play pokemon pretty much, and it would be ludicrous to re-document everything about pokemon myself, figure out everything about pokemon myself. sites like bulbapedia exist for a reason. that would essentially require the ability to read assembly and do software decomp to be considered a master” of the game or a mechanic in it, which i just don’t think is reasonable! and knowing how to efficiently find & understand information about niche mechanics online is part of the skill, i think
that being said, reading guides online cannot replace hands-on experience and self-research. obviously if you want to master something you have to actually do it and that’s no different with video games. i think generally if you are really experienced with a game and playing it enough to be considered in some way a “master” of it you will naturally learn more about it or discover new things about it by playing it, including stuff which may not even be easily reference-able online
this ask makes me think of speedrunning and how popular speedgames have community resources and guides, but then when someone gets really acquainted with a speedrun, they may discover new routes or glitches on their own. this is basically how i feel about the topic in general including outside of speedrunning lol

he was deep. that’s all your brain could register at the moment.
one of your legs was over his shoulder, the other hooked around his hip. you were partially on your side, hips tilted up as childe rocked himself into you at a deep, agonizing angle that had your brain swimming and drool coating your lips.
you weren’t sure how long he had had you there, on your side, grinding and fucking into you at his own leisure as if he wasn’t also on the brink of cumming. you had finished hard twice — maybe three times? — now, the base of the double-sided strap coated with a creamy ring of your slick, childe’s twitching t-cock soaked in it too.
he groaned into the sensitive skin of your knee as he shifted his weight on the bed and adjusted his hips; the warm, malleable silicon slipped deeper into your throbbing pussy. it felt as though childe was carving himself into you, the tip of the phallic-shaped toy feeling as though it was kissing your cervix, destroying your mental capacity for thought.
you were a mess as you babbled nothings to him, incomprehensible gurgling into the damp pillow as you felt his t-cock grind against your abused clit. it made you jolt and jerk your legs; he wrapped a bulky arm around your plush thigh and laughed. “careful, pretty girl. there’s no runnin’ from me yet, ‘m not done breeding you.”
you moaned into the pillow as he pulled his hips back, back, back, the tip of the cock-shaped toy slipping out of your hole as you clenched around nothing for the first time in what felt like hours.
in your haze, you had no grip on reality. you barely registered the words coming from your lips; all you knew was that you wanted him inside, you wanted to feel his t-dick bump and grind against your clit again, you needed him. so you didn’t hesitate in whining loudly and turning your head, rocking your hips up to try and coax him back inside. “no, no no no, please, i need, daddy please-“
you vaguely heard his breath catch in his throat as his fingers dug into the meat of your thighs. “what was that, baby?”
you whimpered as the tip of the toy caught on your hole and slipped in again. “daddy, daddy please, m’ so close…”
childe laughed breathlessly, eyes wide and blown with lust as he stared down at your writhing, pliant form in his hands, spread out just for him. “oh, fuck me baby. you need daddy’s cock? fine, lemme give it to you, shit. just keep sayin’ that.”

I see doom classic on my timeline, I’ll bite: what’s your go-to mod loadout for doom? Any preferences as far as source ports go?
Over the years I have gone back and forth on how much modding is enough modding for me. Like I used to be the sort of guy that would track Half-Life modding forums and had his HL1 fully kitted out with custom models and even sounds I'd modified personally.
Tumblr media
This 14 year old screenshot might not look super different to the untrained eye, but it's modded to hell. That's a completely new gun model, those blood decals are modded, and I think I personally edited Barney's face texture here to have his Half-Life 2 texture.
At some point I backed off and appreciated the vanilla experience more, but not with Doom. Doom's always been something I mod and mod and mod.
It started out with the Doomsday source port in, like, 2009, which I liked because it added rudimentary lighting support. Torches and fireballs would glow. It also had support for 3D models and HD texture packs, but I realized how silly that looked.
I moved on to a GZDoom mod called Beautiful Doom, which kept more of the Traditional Doom Flavor while also keeping things like lighting support and adding in more gore, remastered audio, and smoother animations. But then Beautiful Doom stopped being just a cosmetic mod and started prodding at gameplay changes.
So I've moved on to replicating what I like about Beautiful Doom, but through a huge list of different mods. Not only do I get most of the way to Beautiful Doom, I extend beyond it a little ways, too. My batch file looks like this:
gzdoom.exe updatemods/nashgore.pk3 lights.pk3 brightmaps.pk3 updatemods/caulkpc.pk3 updatemods/DoomMetalVol7.wad updatemods/FDHUD_FD.pk3 updatemods/immerse_v104.pk3 updatemods/MBlur1.03a.pk3 updatemods/SmoothDoom.pk3 updatemods/BloodFixerPlus.wad updatemods/steve_flashlight_2018.02.12.pk7 updatemods/FDHUD_FD.pk3 updatemods/SpriteShadow_v1.85.pk3 -iwad doom.wad
Which is:
Nash's Gore Mod, with the settings basically cranked to max ingame
GZDoom's Lights and Brightmaps, which makes torches/etc. glow
Sound Caulking, which remasters all weapon sounds
Doom Metal Volume 7, a music replacement mod
A Final Doom (PS1) HUD mod
The General Purpose Immersive Camera Mutator, which adds a bunch of little things: footstep sounds, camera sway on turning, leaning, etc.
Simple Motion Blur, which adds motion blur to camera rotations (think Half-Life 2)
Smooth Doom, which gives weapons and monsters 3x as many frames of animation.
Blood Fixer Plus, which may or may not be needed anymore? It makes monsters bleed the correct colors (blue for cacodemons, green for barons of hell, etc.)
Steve's Flashlight Mod, in combination with turning the map brightness down a little to make it more moody.
And lastly a mod to add correct floor shadows to monsters, which I can't actually find a download for anymore.
The only thing I miss is that I think Brightmaps also used to make monsters' eyes glow in the dark, and Smooth Doom does not have support for that.
Anyway, all those mods together gives us this:
youtube
(The framerate drops in this recording bother me; I know my system is getting old, but I think playing this at 120hz impacted the recording. It looked smooth for me, but the recording drops frames more than a little. And it's Doom. It shouldn't be doing this)

hi, I wanted to ask what programs do you use for animations?? :o
Hello! :D I use TVPaint Animation and Toon Boom Harmony - personally I prefer TVPaint because I find it the closest to the traditional 2D animation and it has a Photoshop feel when it comes to brushes and textures. Toon Boom is vector-based, so it's cleaner and you can do a lot more with adjusting the animation without losing the quality, which is a godsend and one of the peeves I have with TVPaint (because adjusting anything in there sends it straight to blurry superhell :'D)

Hi! I've tried looking it up but haven't found anything on what I'm looking for, and I've seen this blog come up when looking for other general Firealpaca things, so I figure I'll try asking here. Do you know if there's any kind of setting to make my Firealpaca brush settings default when I close the program? It used to do that before I updated it and I liked it resetting the opacity and size of the brushes I used every time I closed the program, do you know if it's a setting or something or if it was just a thing removed from the newer versions?
Hello! It seems that this could be a bug after newer updates. If you don't mind, you can try downgrading this more recent version and see if that works.
If you have the newest version installed, they actually changed it a bit in a recent bigger update, so that if you change your brush temporarily e.g. change the size, it will keep that change, indicated by the brush number being red the next time you open it. Now, it would make sense, that if you go to the brush settings (double-click the brush or click the gear icon), you should be able to reset the brush. But it seems that over the more recent updates, this does not work anymore the way it was intended. I remember when the update with this change came out, it kinda worked as you'd imagine it, but had some weird behaviour then too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you go into settings, it now simply saves the new size over as if you clicked ok. The only thing for now I can reccommend for now, is that you remember the original size of the brush and re-type it in again. Then it should be back to normal. Unfortunately, it does not seem like many have noticed yet, but I just tested it on my own Firealpaca and it doesn't seem to work properly at all. All we can do for now is write a bug report at the official site.
Tumblr media
In general, I suppose this was a feature that was requested by other users. That's the only thing I see as possible as in the update log, it seems that it was a long-awaited feature.

sorry if this is a silly question, but how did you get the in game assets for conversions (tell me why etc.) i wanted to make some lis conversions for myself and its super confusing!
not a silly question!! i actually made a tutorial years ago, in the video i'm using lis2, but it's the same process regardless of what game it is, as long as it uses unreal engine. the only thing you need to change is which engine version your game uses, which you can find on the compatibility table or you can google "[game name] umodel" and something usually comes up!

Do you know anything about the supposed party member named Lisette from the first beta? People found voice lines of a girl that said “shadow” that sounded different from the other character’s we’ve heard and assumed she was a party member, but I haven’t heard anything since then or in the second beta
Huh, I don't remember hearing anything about that back during the first beta. Unfortunately, while I do know how to get images, 3D models, and other visual stuff like that from the files, I don't yet know how to mine audio files, so I can't actually confirm whether or not that line exists right now.
The name "Lisette" is interesting, though, because it'd be written the same way in Japanese as Risette (though in Japanese, Rise's nickname isn't Risette, it's Risechii, so... it's just interesting, haha).
