For the ask the oc
Hello, Leta and Ria! Hope you two are doing great there 💖💖💖
Here's my question for the both of you, what are your thoughts on meeting Val and the others for the first time?
@shinmiyovvi AFTER WHAT FEELS LIKE YEARS IVE FINALLY ANSWERED THIS I’m so sorry it took this long Shin 😭😭 Hope you like it nonetheless 🥺💖💖💖 tried to add the southern flare for Zari!
“Ah, hey there Shin! It’s been awhile since we’ve last seen you.” Leta smiles softly, “I’m doing great by the way. Ria, come say hi!”
Ria waves a hand while she lights a cigarette with the other. “Mmh, yea, hi. We’re both peachy. Let’s hurry up and answer the question.”
Leta sighs with a roll of her eyes, “Don’t worry about her, that's just how she is. So, our thoughts when we first met Val and the others? Well, to be honest when I first saw Lena I was happy to know I wouldn't be the only woman in the crew. God knows what I’d do if I had to deal with all these boys and that testosterone on my own. But…..I also noticed something about her, like…..she lost someone or something dear to her. It made me feel sad cause I know what that pain feels like.”
Ria nods her head in agreement, “Licia reminded me of myself, a woman wronged by the world and protecting herself behind a guise of anger and coldness. It also felt nice to have somebody to possibly relate to.”
“Meeting Ji Eun was interesting I suppose. I could instantly tell upon seeing her that she wasn't one for bullshit and I respected that. But somethin’ told me we wouldn’t exactly be super close and boy was my instinct right. Not that we hate each other but don't you reckon you’d hate it if somebody was puttin down the effort you have for your work. I know she’s testing me but gee does it irk me. Sorry for rambling but I respect Ji Eun and I’m glad to be in her company. Bout you, Ria?”
Ria was unusually quiet as she took another huff of her cigarette, “......I felt heartbroken meeting Ji Eun for the first time…..It was clear as day what she had gone through ...what haunted her. It made me feel…..angry not at her but for her. Made me wanna protect her, poor gal doesn’t deserve any more pain or heartache.”
Leta looked at Ria in slight surprise but shifted into understanding, she decided not to dwell on it and went to move on.
“Hmm okay well, let's see we can talk bout Arthur next. One look at him and hearing him talk told me I’d constantly be having headaches around him. But I also knew I’d share some pretty good laughs.” Leta smiles softly, chuckling. “Nowadays he likes to tease and get on my nerves but it’s nothing a little sarcasm and wit can’t fix.”
“.....He’s like the father I wished I was blessed with. At first I was wary, and didn't really think much of him. Suppose it was the kindness he had and the fact that he actually seemed to care and listened to what I had to say that drew me in. Honestly, I think my heart knew that we’d be able to form a connection but my mind just wasn't ready for it at first.”
“Suppose we can't trade one for the other?”
“Hold your horses there, girlie!”
“Worth a shot wadnit (Wasn’t it)?”
Ria snorts, “Anyways, lastly there's Dragomir. Don't judge a book by its cover would be an understatement here, thought he was gonna be that type of man who likes to act all big and strong or even the silent and brooding type but boy was my gut instinct so off. Not that I’m complaining, it’s actually kinda heartwarming to see how sweet and kind Drago can be and don’t tell him I said this but he’s almost like a big teddy bear with how sweet he is. It’s also nice that he’s a great listener.”
“......It was hard to talk to him at first….sometimes it was hard to even look at him….Miro reminded me of my brother so much. It was nice to have someone like Red around but it was like a reminder that I would never get to see my brother again. Sometimes I like to think that Red sent Miro to me, lemme know that it’s okay, that he’d never be mad at me for moving on. Similar to Lena who I see as a sister, Miro quickly became like a brother to me and sometimes I feel guilty but then I remember Red always wanted me to be happy and I tell myself that he’d be happy to see I was able to form such a great bond with the others.”
Ria puts an arm around Leta’s shoulders and pulls her in for a side hug for comfort. “Hope that answers your question, kiddo. And have a nice day/night alright?”

One thing I think many gloss over when it comes to Godzilla is the motivation and personality of each iteration, and how their design reflects that.
Shin is a being of pure agony, a living cancer that kills and destroys as much as it can out of pure rage and hatred at its own existence and those who made it be so. Over the film, it goes from what looks like a dead shark to a monster with razors for teeth and eyes of pure suffering and hate.
Minus One is basically hate personified, a monster that somehow manages to hold a deep personal rage against each and every individual member of humanity. It's hatred runs so deep that it commits actions just to terrify and kill. And it's design forces a terrifying glare, one so viscous you'd believe it really hates you personally.
Monsterverse is more of a disgruntled hero. He kinda gives the vibe of a dude who stands in the corner at a party acting like he doesn't want to be there. He has specific motivations in taking down particular kaiju, motivations that are often confused for attacks. He does what he needs to do and retreats back to the ocean when he's done. And he looks consistently miffed. A face that does lean into a menacing rage when necessary.
Classic goji is, like most iterations, an already existing being from the sea, enraged at the destruction of its home and mutation of itself. It has come to simply destroy, destroy all that has allowed this to occur. It causes hurt and suffering, agony and destruction all in its shared pain and rage. Its design is literally shaped like a mushroom cloud since, yknow, nuke mutation.

Shin Hati is such a funny character. she gets like 3 lines per episode and they’re either questions or something Definitely Not About Sabine. she has no idea what’s going on at all times. she always looks like she’s in a state of confusion. she’s not even sure why she and her master took this job or what their end goal is, only that she’d follow him anywhere. she doesn’t like witches. she doesn’t like Thrawn. she’s lonely. she wants so desperately to know about the Jedi’s history, to understand the what-ifs of her own life. she envies her master, despite what he went through. she envies knowing how it used to be.

The trauma ability thing IS canon, and it's confirmed in Gaiden. Gaiden actually has a ton of important worldbuilding information, which is why it pains me that it's not more popular. Here's the exact quote (translation credit goes to profqlasses on Twitter):
"Sensei," I muttered hoarsely. "Have you ever wished you didn't have your ability?"
“What a very mature question,” replied Ayatsuji-sensei. “I can tell you the answer, but I don’t think a fledgling like you would catch it. You’ll need about ten years of suffering for that kind of excellent question. How many years has it been since your ability first awakened?”
I didn’t need to count with my fingers; the number had always been in my head.
“……Five years.”
“There are lots of obscurities as to when and how people acquire their abilities. But most of the time, there’s a certain trigger. In your case, it was your mother’s death. In Reigo Island’s Serial Murder Case five years ago. If it’s from something like that, it’s no wonder if one or two abilities would get involved there. And it’s regardless whether the person in question wants it or not.”
(Gaiden spoilers ahead)
Now in Tsujimura's case specifically, she inherited the ability because her mother specifically passed it onto her, and now she only has partial control of it. That's actually how Kyouka's mother learned to transfer abilities. But it still reveals that abilities are triggered in people after traumatic events, and also reveals that people can have MULTIPLE abilities
Multiple spoilers for anything outside of anime
“There are lots of obscurities as to when and how people acquire their abilities. But most of the time, there’s a certain trigger. In your case, it was your mother’s death. In Reigo Island’s Serial Murder Case five years ago. If it’s from something like that, it’s no wonder if one or two abilities would get involved there. And it’s regardless whether the person in question wants it or not.”
That little burb is actually why I started thinking on the canon trauma based abilities. Also, the idea that all ability users are just a tad bit messed up. Those two things seem so dependent on one another; being messed up and and being an ability user.
Makes me think about the themes of trauma and the way it literally shapes a person.
And Tsujimura? I don't know much about her, only read her wiki when I was researching for a fic (and one my bsd quick analysis). But I was aware of her ability and how it related to Kyouka's. Honestly thought the multiple ability thing was simply speculation but it always seemed logical to me.
I feel it is a rational conclusion, even without Gaiden making it canon mind you, that abilities manifest under stress and out of trauma. I would even go as far to argue that they strengthen and develop under it to.
Characters like Akutagawa, Yosano, and Chuuya all are examples of this.
Akutagawa developed an ability that was so offensive that it was defensive. It had no true defensive capabilities till he suffered under Dazai's abusive training. It changed.
Yosano’s ability was basically still developing when she came under Mori's tutelage, wouldn't surprise me if he even knew a way to influence its development. (Exhibit A, him fatally wounding that soldier)
Chuuya had an ability before it was molded to contain and withstand Arahabaki. Another example of ablity being changed as it developed. Changed under extreme torture and trauma. Technically, he even has two abilities, Corruption and For The Tainted Sorrow.
Mori is suspicious as fuck when it comes to the children getting their abilities manipulated.
All in all, it seems to be one of those unspoken, read between the lines kind of aspects of bsd.

If you’d gone in there, you would’ve been framed. So you sacrificed yourself for me, is that it? My, that’s a true friendship right there. I’m sorry if I offended you. Yes, I feel very offended.

David - Day 26
Race: Fiend
Alignment: Neutral
April 25th, 2024
Tumblr media
The Danse Macabre is one of the most famous pieces of classical music- a winding tale of death and a beautiful dance unto one's own end, with its own folklore surrounding it. On All Hallow's Eve, one is said to be able to spot skeletons rise from their graves and play the song of death, dancing until the sun rises, whereupon they collapse yet again. One of the subjects of this dance, David, belies himself as the demon of the day- a fiend who dances until sunrise, and then some, when the moon is highest on Halloween night.
According to the poem that inspired the famous classical piece, Danse Macabre, when it turns to midnight on Halloween, Death will rise. However, he's not interested in claiming souls- instead, he shall play the fiddle, calling forth the dead from their graves to dance for him, causing a night of an ecstatic dance until the cockerel crows the day anew. It's then that the skeletons shall return to their graves, waiting for the next year to come.
This famous French legend is what the Danse Macabre is primarily based upon, and is also where David originates; in this case, David represents Death in the story, calling upon his fellow fiends to dance a dance of death that continues until dawn. Heeded with the playing of his violin, he guides the living to the realm of the dead to play and dance alongside the legions of the revived skeletons. David is a unique invention, though, and his name seems to be based on the instrument he plays, that being the Davidoff Stradivarius violin.
David's design is clearly inspired by classical depictions of bards, as is his ability described in the compendium- according to most descriptions of him throughout the series, he plays songs on his enchanted violin that drive people to madness, dancing unto their death. This may be a bit of a reach on my part, but I personally hypothesize that this may also be inspired by the infamous case of mass hysteria, the Dancing Plague of 1518. Maybe, in the SMT world, David was the one who caused so many people to dance to their literal deaths in such a frenzied fervor. Another possible connection lies in the famous tale of the Pied Piper, what with his ability to control people through dance, though this is admittedly also a bit of a stretch.
David is typically one of the first fiends faced in the series, owing to his non-intimidating appearance and the fact that the most he does is play the fiddle, and he mostly serves as a useful early-game debuffer and magic attacker. He's a nice introduction to the fiend race, serving as a quick and easy guide to a game over, though nothing too special.
However, in spite of his lack of backstory and middling stats, David has certainly won my heart with his fun design and mix of inspirations, and I hope that we can all spot him next Halloween night playing the dance of death for years to come.
