Let S be a bounded, convex, compact, well-defined set, tightly compressed, seasoned, smoked, strictly marinated, and covered with a layer of Worcestershire sauce. Then S is homeomorphic to any well-made dish.

Instead of putting math departments in the buildings for natural sciences they should put them next to the philosophy department. And then any time a scientist needs some mathematics they have to make a pilgrimage to a different side of the campus.

This hits doubly hard in applied maths when you actually go to the effort of trying to explain the application so the work is "meaningful" to randoms and then they either don't care about the application at all or ask tons of followups that you know nothing about bc it's not related to your work. Like I just do the differential equations and they are cool and please appreciate my pretty plot 🥺
Explaining a beautiful mathematical concept and the person asks for the real world application like bitch first off the real world application is it makes me personally ecstatic and second it doesn't need one because it's my special little princess concept

what’s kinda crazy is that, had filbrick been a better father and raised them in a loving home, the twins probably could’ve actually made a lot of money for the family… stan was never accommodated for while growing up so he never got to demonstrate his smarts (and he is very smart, he taught himself advanced math and shit while building a long-lasting business from scratch, man), and instead he was made to feel more and more worthless, like he had nothing to contribute to the world—the only purpose he was able to find was to always be there for his brother. what was he if he didn’t have a brother to be there for anymore? of course he would eventually lash out over losing ford (and accidentally ruin ford’s project in the process). on the other hand, ford had so much pressure on him that he pushed himself too hard to prove just how smart he was. to prove that he was the best. he needed to hear how smart he was, because what was he if he wasn’t a genius? of course bill’s manipulation worked on him. of course he wanted to make something that could change the world despite the potentially dangerous nature of it, something that would put his name in the history books. his only value was to bring success to his family, and this was how he was going to do it. if stan had been encouraged and supported, he could have used his skills to find success. if ford hadn’t been put under so much pressure, he wouldn’t have needed to turn to a literal demon so he could prove himself. he could’ve focused on the other groundbreaking research he already had in gravity falls. stan probably never would have broken that project in the first place and ford would’ve made it to his dream school, just like filbrick wanted.

No, pure math and applied math are not enemies, in fact they are kissing, sloppy style, squishing boobs together, etc.

Every time I feel like I hate my maths degree I just say to myself, “This is so Neil Josten core” and all the boredom evaporates from my body

Hi i was wondering if youd be okay with people writing fanfiction about your spade pirates sabo au?
Tumblr media
I’m perfectly fine with people writing fics for Spade Pirate Sabo AU as long as they credit and do so with the understanding that I already have broad strokes of the AU planned out and their fic might not be canon to whatever I have planned!
That said I love seeing people’s work based on the au so if anybody does write a fic I’d love if they could send it to me so I could read it 🥺

Cyberweek 2024 Day Five: Crossover
Pfft, I've been on an AvA kick recently, so I guess it's not too surprising that I chose this. On one hand, this crossover works well in theory. The stick figures are all fast, kinetic learners and really good at demonstrating their earned skills and knowledge.
On the other hand, the sheer tonal dissonance is hilarious.

If I had a nickel for every time a genuinely nice, positive, occasionally shy but clearly determined character with a hefty side of sass got misinterpreted in the fandom as a cinnamon roll or got infantilized, I would be a millionaire.

not smart as in intelligent but smart as in "people use my above average skills in math to deny me support in every other area of life"

Going to go on a little rant but my god I'm sick of how undervalued maths is. I hate that for the past 10 years, including primary school, whenever I tell people I like maths I get asked if I'm insane. I hate that in a country that has made major contributions to maths, there's barely any effort to keep up that history and support new mathematicians.
I hate that I can't criticise people who also do stem that go on and on about how everything relating to maths is stupid and useless because "that's just how they feel"...Even when they're doing computer science. And said computer scientists complain every. Single. Time. When a maths equation appears.
I hate that I can't point out how it's weird how people demonize mathematics itself instead of how it's taught, which is where the problem usually lies. I hate that I'm expected to drop mathematics entirely to go into a "proper" job like programming instead of research into population models and simulations. I hate how maths is being co-opted by people making points about "how simple the world is" when maths is nothing like they portray it to be. I hate that maths is seen as a field only of white, cishet men when there's been so many women, poc and queer people that have done groundbreaking work.
I hate that we're in a world where mathematics is so important to everyday life, and yet the idea of actually studying maths and continuing research into it is frowned upon.

This isn't an idea or realization I will ever be able to do anything with but it is a thought I had that I think is kinda cool so I'm throwing it out there into the void of Tumblr for fun. The Hearthians' number system is probably base 3 or 6. Base 10 is common in real life because that's how many fingers humans typically have and upon doing a google to double check, I've come to understand that most number systems seem to be based on fingers in some way (like 5, counting only on one hand, or 8, counting the gaps between fingers and so on). So because the Hearthians typically have three fingers on each hand their language and numbering system would probably reflect that.
Again, I can't really do anything with this thought but I've been reading a lot of hard science fiction lately which has got me thinking about science and math stuff more. Specifically it was a book called 'Saturn Run' (which other than the rocket science and alien stuff was pretty mid) that got me thinking about this in particular recently because there was an alien computer that revealed its makers worked in base 8. So it got me thinking about how the aliens I've been writing about lately would do math too.
