Army Painting vs Model Painting
When I (re)started my painting journey a little over a year ago at this point, I focused a lot on painting each and every model to meticulous detail. I am playing Battletech: Alpha Strike, as opposed to a game like 40k, so I thought that i can spend more time on each model since i only ever need to field around 5-10 of them at a time. Sure, it'd take me a while to get through them but i finished the 8 inner sphere mechs in the Alpha Strike Starter box within my first three months! Even with me slowly amassing a collection of gray minis calling my name, i was patient.
Everything changed when the fire nation attacked my entire collection was stolen out of the back of my car (more on that in a future post). After experiencing the generosity shown of my local community, I had to start repainting my newly rebuilt collection.
At first, I stuck to my old ways of painting just a few models to meticulous detail. I learned and refined techniques that enjoyed, and figured out how to quickly get through ones I enjoy less. Then, as I played more, ran more events, and developed the draft cube, I realized that it would really elevate my events and loaner models if they were all painted. And there's no way i'll get that completed in my lifetime at my current rate.
In only a couple weeks, i completed the equivalent of about 1 model a day. I know for some people, that seems really slow, but for me that's lightning quick. Especially considering i'm still learning how to airbrush, and using color theory and layering to try to achieve the blue that made me fall in love with this scheme.
You can see my first attempt on the panther was a bit too light of a purple, and the wolfhound is closer to the book example, but still a bit blue. While the latter is technically wrong, I really like how it looks. What else really matters? Plus it means I get to use purple primer and a purple wash, which is fun for me!
So, that's when I started to develop a method that is a balance of speed and quality. I realized I needed to learn how to become an army painter. Striking that balance of efficiency and quality and fun was the newest puzzle to tackle. I have physical hard evidence that i can paint to a high degree of quality. I don't need to prove that to anyone, let alone myself, anymore.
And here, with this scheme for a Free Rasalhauge Kavalleri Regiment from the Force Manual: Kurita book, I found a simple color scheme that uses some of my favorite colors and i can knock out quickly and to a high degree of quality on models that call for it.
Now, I think I've mostly transitioned into army painter mode for BattleTech. The most satisfying thing is completing chunks of models and making a dent into my goal of having enough painted minis that players in the events I host don't have to play with gray minis, if they're from my collection.
That being said, I am always trying to stay one step ahead of burnout. So mixing things up like Uncle Atom suggested in a recent Tabletop Minions video has been very helpful. Terrain, and large models like the Aurora Borealis DropShip from my previous post are great examples. I still get that itch to go deep on a project sometimes, and those are great outlets when there isn't a Battletech model I want to go deep on.
I do have an upcoming project in that vein that I'm pretty excited and nervous about. Stay tuned!

I recently painted Vulkan He'Stan just because like - well, the Salamanders and I simply can' help but wonder, what this world could be, if we all held each other with a bit more empathy.
Anyways, Vulkan He'Stan is painted.
Do I think he looks good? Yes. I like the fire effect in some places :3
Did I have fun? No.
Will I ever paint a resin miniature again? I pray to God that I will not. No one deserves that suffering.

Welcome the paladin of Torm.
He's a silver dragonborn, but by the time I realized that the "silver" that came in my original Army Painter’s Speedpaints set didn't feel light enough and grey enough to feel like silver, I didn't feel like redoing it, so he looks kind of evil. I've since bought some other metallic paints, but it was too late for this one by then.
The figurine is from the Blacklist Miniatures: Fantasy Series 1 kickstarter.

First model completed post surgery, Verminlord Deciever.
Some processes used on this model; primed in black, then basecoated with some air brush colors, mostly vallejo, including somber grey and some purple ink.
Skin was dark shadow flesh and warm shadow flesh by pro acryl glazed together, the carved wounds were doomfire magenta gw contrast paint with some flow improved to get in deep, the sores and bumps on the body were dabbed in nurgle's rot gw technical paint.
Fur was a drybrush of storm vermin Fur, warpfiend grey, and neutral grey by gw and pro acryl.
In parts on the Fur I wanted to give it a look like milder and filth, so I added liquid green enamel pigment with brown, then washed in agrax earthshade, followed by a mix of newsh weathering medium by pro acryl mixed with warm brown then cleaned up with a makeup sponge, finished by drybrushijg back up with neutral grey.
The base was painted up with mordant earth base, then brown and green enamel pigments, for the toxic pool, I broke some slate tiled with a hammer and glued them around to make the edge of the pool, the pool itself is army painter disgusting slime effect, with ak interactive still water effect.
Final bit on the slate was some brown green and grey pigments to give some contrast.

(modified) Giant Spider Miniature

[ID: Three photographs of a painted giant spider miniature from different angles. The main body of the mini is painted in brown and beige tones. The legs are painted in black, red, and yellow gradients. The abdomen is painted with a pattern based on an orb weaver's. The miniature's base is painted like stone with some greenery and wood covered in spider webs. \End ID]
This is a modified version of the Nolzu'rs Marvelous Minature Giant Spider mini painted with Vallejo and Army Painter paints. This took so long. Would this have been easier with an airbrush? yes. Did my airbrush break shortly after I primed this? also yes. But I love how it turned out so this was worth every minute I spent on it. And it forced me to practice gradients with brushes. Also, look at the post where I show the modification I did on the cephalothorax here.
For the webs on the base, I used some fake spiderwebs left over from Halloween.

I'm on a roll! A Wolverine, Commando, Thunderbolt, Shadow Hawk, and Griffin, all painted up and ready to roll out under the banner of Rambukk's Raiders.

Speedpaints are fucking cheating I swear to god bro. One coat of Army Painter's Pallid Bone and bam, it's good to fucking go and people have complimented me on my panel lining. Fuckin panel lining!! I didn't DO any panel lining, it's all speedpaint! Only traditional paints on there are the metallics and the canopies. The whole batch took me like 4 or 5 hours. Phenomenal. That's half the "Game of Armored Combat" box (+1 from the Beginner box) done, on to the next!

Still maintain Army Painter is the best paint company just for the fact they literally show you how to shade a mini by shoving it into a bucket of their shade goo. People think I’m kidding btw but it’s in their little painting guide you get with paint kits. Shows them sticking a mini into a small bucket of shade and saying it’s good enough. They do sell their shading stuff in droppers but they always show at least one bucket of the stuff being used to water board a mini for “quick and easy shading”
Which is wild cause most paint companies tell you about brush control and how to it with some precision and army painter is just “nah bro … we got a bucket for you. Good enough for contract work and all”
