My 2014 photo Petal—shot on my iPhone 5s—has been selected to be exhibited in "Click" at The Art Center Highland Park! I remember taking an oil painting class at TAC the summer I was 19 and it was a lovely experience, and I'm overjoyed to show my art there. Thank you to guest jurors Paula Chamlee and Rose Blouin and curator Caren Helene Rudman for choosing my work.

Painting Photographs

I started with photographs taken in Alaska, using a medium format film camera, printed them on canvas, and painted over them with acrylic, using molding paste for texture.

I first experimented with painting my photos in 2001, after taking a darkroom course at Mowelfund in the Philippines. This led to a show at The Drawing Room in Makati, Philippines. At the time I could only print up to 8" x 10" black and white photos. Since then, digital photography has advanced so it's now possible to print large scale on canvas.

The image above is of a mountain range taken from Richardson Highway near Fairbanks, Alaska. It's on a 20"x 20" stretched canvas, copyright 2023. It was created during my Artist Residency at The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire.

Oh my fucking god, my mom found this old poster of years ago, and I just had to share it because this place did play a role in my artistic history. I blurred my face, as I do not want to do a face reveal, but this is me when I was like 17, wearing Miku cosplay at my local art cult. I'm saying cult, because that was how our art teacher always jokingly called us. We even had this secret code word like Tumblr has 'I like your shoelaces'. De Garenspinnerij is basically the local art center, and they have this art club for teens where you are taught comic-specific drawing, from drawing itself to practising storyboards. At the end of every year, our stuff would be compiled together to form the yearly Fat Raid Comix edition. Because of me being good looking but also having a unique sense of fashion, my art teacher loved to take photographs of me. I also posed for his adult sketching class twice in my old lolita clothes. This wasn't even the only photo of me that ended up being used by De Garenspinnerij in the late 2010s. Weird how when I was a little kid and under a modelling contract, I never booked a job, yet when I let it expire and just stay clear of the spotlight I ended up as the face of a place. LMAO
