Important news for cosplay and fan creators!
So @/estarguarstia on twitter recently emailed the folks at the SAGAFTRA on how fan creators/influencers can support the strike (also what should aspiring members follow to not impact their future membership) and here’s what they said.
Tumblr media
“We are asking folks not to do cosplay if it would promote struck productions. Yes, you can promote comics, books, and games, as this is not struck work. That being said, performers are being asked to refrain from promotiong struck work, including past productions that would have been struck if produced today.”
@/KlaudiaSays clarifies further what this means as they’re a producer/writer
Tumblr media
Furthermore here’s what SAGAFTRA has told deadline news
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
From the article
“And even if a social media influencer isn’t getting paid to push on social media for a studio/streamer, it’s best not to do so, even as a fan. “Influencers should refrain from posting on social media about any struck work regardless of whether they are posting organically or in a paid capacity,” reads Sagaftrastrike.org.”
So please support the WGA and SAGAFTRA strikers by not doing promo for stopped works.
Here is a current list of struck companies
Tumblr media
And here’s the strike FAQ.
While yes the strike does specify not cosplaying for struck companies under their “influencer” page, it also does say non-members should not render services to struck companies either if they plan to be members in the future. And from the emails from SAG-AFTRA with suggestions I linked above as well, maybe just don’t do free promo for struck companies right now.

You know, when this whole AI art, deepfakes and other shit began, I was scared that the responsibility of convincing people that it can and will be used unethically would fall on the shoulders of small artists who would not be taken seriously. I expected change in the art world to be a slow, creeping transition into inevitable demise.
What I did not expect was hollywood studio execs doing that job for us by being so cartoonishly evil, impatient and releasing statements like "We're gonna starve you until you agree to work with us lol" and "We're gonna take your likeness and use it forever. You will be paid with jack and shit."
I also did not expect AI bros doing the same job for us by harassing a voice actor off of twitter.

i am so tired of this. we are so tired of this. between Bob Iger's garbage comments, that one executive straight out sayin they'll wait out the strikes till people start losin their homes an now this. how long do they think they can keep treating the creatives they get rich off while doin nothin themselves like this? till when will they do an say whatever they want an keep gettin away with it? not long now.. not long. not anymore.
also Karla Ortiz keeps kickin butt❤

ALSO! use Glaze to protect the images of your work you post!
here's a link to that as well for you
it basically creates a protective layer on the image that prevents AI from stealin it. Very important. all the info is on the site.

Well.
I have a shit relationship with my dad. He openly expresses how AI can AND WILL, replace writers.
Which is horrid, considering that his “straight catholic and cisgender female” daughter is currently working on a book of their own.
he invited me for dinner, and conversation got…
heated.
mom and little brother stayed out of it-wisely so.
so he openly tells me, “Look, I can openly type out a prompt, and Chat GPT will just write it for me.”
I should have kept a cool head, but I yelled. I think a neighbour heard me.
I kept shutting down his remarks about how my writing wouldn’t matter because of AI.
so. I’m at war. A very. Very. Important war. For the future of all writers, and artists alike. If I don’t start shutting off this thinking from my own home, the world will begin believing that AI can solve HUMAN PROBLEMS. AI leeches off what humans create. What we worked so hard to do. The hours we took to make people cry, get angry, or be happy.
AI doesn’t even pay workers. AI can’t comfort someone with ALGORITHM. AI can’t do anything without someone already having done it. AI can’t make anything relatable, because it’s a BOT. Since when do BOTS, feel HUMAN emotion.
sometimes the information isn’t even right.
So I’m at war.
I support the writers guild.
I support ANY struggling writer, going against the current of AI.
Fuck it, we ball.
kids who love to write-AND IVE SEEN THESE KIDS WITH A BURNING PASSION FOR THE ART OF LANGUAGE, I WAS ONE OF THEM TOO-they are about to get their dreams to make someone see their vision, their imagination, stripped away from them. Because of bots.
they can assist with creativity, maybe. Fixing up a few mishaps in grammar. That’s all they’re good for. You can’t make a movie without the vision of a human behind it.
watermark your arts.
I don’t know how to protect your fan fiction, but we’re going to do our best.
This is my mini war.
might be a bigger one.
who knows ;)

So I was originally going to respond to a post about the wga and sag-aftra strike by A Beloved Author Popular on Tumblr, but it's responding to a non-anonymous ask, and said author is discouraging piling on, so I will JUST SAY that:
There is every difference in the world between a person making art in their free time/as a side job/as a hobby (especially while they're working their way up to getting paid the real moneys for this) and a person working an art-based job that is SUPPOSED to pay a reasonable amount of money, but does not because CEOs are greedy. Writing for a TV show? Usually a FULL TIME JOB. Acting, ditto. Yeah, sometimes a person will pop in for a few hours and then be done, but frequently we are talking about considerably more than 40 hours a week. They shouldn't be paid less for these hours because it's not "real work" like physical labor.
Also does that extend to other non-"blue collar" jobs? When I was dreaming about spread sheets and worsening my eyes and back crouching over a screen in data entry, was that also not work enough to count as work? Where do you draw the line, o arbiter of What Counts As Work?
And for the fucking record, no, having a degree in fine arts does NOT qualify you to make that distinction. And having a high IQ DEFINITELY doesn't, since that just measures that you are good at memorizing and regurgitating information in a specific type of testing scenario, not that you are smarter than the rest of us, which you clearly think you are.
For the record, I am not actually now, nor have I ever been, a professional artist of any sort. I decided against it a long time ago, largely because it's so damn hard to make a living doing so. But I stand with the striking workers, because work is work and you should always get fucking paid for it, even if some people think the kind of work you're doing is lesser. I certainly can't imagine deciding that when someone has finally managed to climb the slippery pole of bullshit and knowing the right people and sheer dumb luck and managed to get paid for their art, that they should be paid less because Captain High IQ had to work a blue-collar job and so should they.
In conclusion- BITE ME MENSA BOY.

"ThE sTrIkEs WiLl DeLaY aLl My FaVoRiTe ShOwS!"
BUDDY ALL MY FAVORITE SHOWS WERE CANCELED AND ERASED FROM EXSISTANCE BECAUSE OF THE GREEDY EXECS!
YOU'LL BE FINE
GET OVER YOURSELF AND PAY AND TREAT THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR FAV SHOWS POSSIBLE FAIRLY.
THE EXECS CAN END THE STRIKE WHENEVER AND LET YOUR SHOWS START PRODUCTION UP AGAIN, BUT THEY WOULD RATHER MAKE A FUSS THAT PEOPLE DONT LIKE BEING PAID 20 CENTS FOR THEIR HARD WORK.
YOU WORK 12,000 HOURS STRAIGHT AND ONLY GET PAID A MEASLY 2,400 AND COME BACK AND SAY YOURE ON THE EXECS SIDE.
AND THERES 8,760 HOURS IN A TOTAL YEAR.
IF THE WRITERS AND ACTORS WORKED ALL THOSE HOURS STRAIGHT WITH NO BREAKS WHAT SO EVER THEY WOULD ONLY MAKE 1,752 DOLLARS TOTAL.
YOU CAN WAIT FOR YOUR SHOWS TO COME BACK AFTER THE PEOPLE WHO PUT ACTUAL DEDICATION INTO THEM GET PAID A FAIR AMOUNT.

ai could be such an amazing tool for so many different things but instead they're like "lets replace art forms and put people out of jobs :)" which is bullshit
im an artist (like actual paid professional artist. this shit is my life) and nothing is more annoying and infuriating to me than people that are selling ai art.
there is so much potential to use ai for art but it isnt art. it can't actually replace things that are created by people to invoke emotion or tell a story. you cannot actually be as amazed or impressed by ai art as actual human-made pieces. it's not the same!!! it doesn't mean anything, its just some prompts that spit out something that can kind of look like art. actual art forms are people pouring their heart and soul into something.
It's all forms of storytelling, which is something consistent in literally every human culture ever. don't support ai books, scripts, shows, illustrations, music. don't support things that are taking away actual human expression. use it for taxes or something, i dont care.

How AI could KILL your favorite TV show
youtube
Fanfiction writers watch the show and give new stories to the characters we love, based on the actors' performances. We meld it with our life experience.
We transform it by passing it through our souls.

I love how all the gay guys I happen to follow lose their shit over beautiful women every other day, and the lesbians I know still appreciate the cute wet cat men (fictional characters, mind you), and the bi/pan & aro/ace people just jump from one hyperfixation/fictional crush to another on the daily--
🥰😜🏳‍🌈
