Welcome back, today we’re kicking off the weekend’s 4 songs of the week with songs with ULTIMATE intros (and one interlude). These songs are songs which feature a spoken introduction sampled from elsewhere that kicks ass and drive you forward into a kinda frenzied but musically aligned power trip.
To begin the mayhem: I bring you Oasis and they’re opening track from ‘Standing on the Shoulders of Giants’; ‘Fuckin in the Bushes’. “We put this festival on you bastards – with a lotta love. We worked for one year for you pigs. And you wanna break our walls down? And you wanna destroy it? Well you go to hell!” This incredible speech was made by Rikki Farr who was a dude who used to be a mercenary in the Congo but changed his career to putting on music events. This extract is from the Isle of Wight festival, 1970.

Second on the list we have a song from probably my most loved vinyl (that I own): ‘Loaded’ from ‘Primal Scream’s album ‘Screamadelica’. “Just what is it that you want to do?” “Well, we wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do, and we wanna get loaded and we wanna have a good time, and that's what we're gonna do we're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party”. If that doesn’t blow your socks off or give you a buzz then you’re a hopeless case, sorry. (Not sorry)

Hang in there guys, nearly finished. This song gives you a certain chill down the spine and evokes great feelings. Country legend, Johnny Cash, is ‘king of country’ in my eyes, here is ‘The Man Comes Around’. For those that haven’t seen the film biopic based on his rise, Walk The Line is a must watch (featuring Joaquin Phoenix). Brilliant film and it’s emotional to me as I have listened to Cash for a very long time, I also have to mention his work he did putting on concerts in state prisons for all the people who were forgotten about. Thank you God for giving us Johnny. "And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder, One of the four beasts saying, ‘Come and see.' and I saw, and behold a white horse"

Lastly, this song hasn’t got a spoken intro but features a speech made my Charlie Chaplin in an interlude and believe me, it’s kick ass to the max, so here you go “To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair, the misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress, the hate of men will pass, and dictators die and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Let us use that power! Let us all unite!”
Scottish Playwright, writer and Artist John Patrick Byrne was on January 6th 1940 in Paisley.
John Byrne where he grew up in the Ferguslie Park housing scheme and was educated at the town’s St Mirin’s Academy before attending Glasgow School of Art, where he excelled. In his final year he was awarded the Bellahousten Award, the school’s most prestigious painting prize, and spent six months in Italy, returning a masterful and confident young artist. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad.
Several of his paintings have hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. In 2007 he was made a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy and is an Honorary Fellow of the GSA, the RIAS, an Honorary Member of the RGI and has Honorary Doctorates from the universities of Paisley, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Strathclyde.
It was by no means an overnight success for Byrne, he was making a living designing book covers for publishers Penguin before recognition, Byrne has also designed record covers for Donovan, The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, and The Humblebums as well as illustrations for the renowned Scottish writer James Kelman.
As well as his artwork Byrne was an accomplished writer perhaps best known as the writer of The Slab Boys Trilogy of plays which explore working-class life in Scotland, and of the excellent TV dramas Tutti Frutti and Your Cheating Heart.
In 2018 Byrne was named Scotland’s most stylish man at the age of 78 at the Scottish Style Awards in Glasgow, beating Outlander star Sam Heughan to the coveted most stylish male title, which was previously won by Richard Jobson, Robert Carlyle, James McAvoy and Paolo Nutini. Byrne, a good friend of comic, Billy Connolly Byrne said at the time he was shocked at the award saying “I dress like a tramp”.
The highlights the quintessential Scottishness of Byrne’s work, and his enduring humour and his focus on the frailty of human experience often lived on the edge of working-class communities. It is a richly rewarding show which underscores r give John Byrne a rightful place as one of Scotland’s finest and most prolific artists.
His most recent work has been murals - one for the ceiling of the King's Theatre in Edinburgh and another in Glasgow to mark the 75th birthday of his friend Billy Connolly.
During lockdown he worked with Pitlochry Festival Theatre to create a new play which was produced and performed remotely.
He and his wife Jeanine also collaborated on a children's book, Donald and Benoit.
Everything he did was drenched in colour. Without him, the world feels a less colourful place.
John Byrne passed away on Thursday November 30th aged 83.
Everything he did was drenched in colour. Without him, Scotland and the world feels a less colourful place.
Muse Disc Guide - The Resistance [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]
The Resistance
IN MUSIC
Having established themselves as a stadium-class national band in the UK, their fourth world tour took them to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. They conquered five continents. Having gone as far as they could musically with their last album, it was interesting to see what direction Muse would take next, but this time they decided to venture into new territory by self-producing without using an outside producer.
So far, each album has evolved to become more dense, more exaggerated, more massive, more dynamic, more varied…… at times it leaves the listener shaken, wondering, "Can they pull it off this far!?" How far will they go without a third party to stop them? This album, which we greeted with such expectations and a touch of anxiety, was surprisingly clear-cut with its finish.
After a barrage of songs that mastered electronic elements in a modern way, such as electro-glam (1/ Uprising), 80s-style synth drums and piano with a gorgeous chorus (2/ Resistance) and R&B-style electropop (3/ Undisclosed Desires) that reminded me of Depeche Mode, the following song (4/ United States Of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)) turned into a magnificent and grandiose rock opera. The Arabic music-like interlude with piano and strings in the middle of the song is full of power! This was a result of making use of their experiences in the Middle East. The final section leads into Chopin's Nocturne No. 2, a development that might not have been possible if an outside producer had been present. Similarly, the last three pieces are three-part rock symphonies by Matthew. His classical taste is on full display.
The relatively unprocessed infusion of all three tastes from the trio balances the overall ups and downs of this album, which is generally dominated by mid-tempo songs, except for (6/ Unnatural Selection) and (7/ MK Ultra), where the heavy, intense guitars explode into a gallop. The album became a worldwide smash hit, to the surprise of the band themselves, who said, "We did whatever we wanted." —Sumi Imai

2009 Hit Albums
Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga were the stars of the 2009 scene. Michael was scheduled to perform 50 shows of 'This Is It' at London's O2 Arena from July 13th, 2009, but died suddenly on June 25th. While the world was in a state of surprise and sadness, the documentary film of the same name, featuring rehearsal footage, became an unprecedented blockbuster hit. Meanwhile, the momentum of 'The Fame', released by Gaga in 2008, continued unabated, and the eight-track 'The Monster', released in 2009 as a coupling (A/ The Fame Monster) to the reissue of 'The Fame', was also a big hit, including 'Bad Romance' and 'Telephone' with Beyoncé. Beyoncé and other female artists were also in high spirits, with Grammy winners Taylor Swift (B/ Fearless) and KE$HA constantly making noise on the stage. It was also in 2009 that Susan Boyle, a plain middle-aged Scottish woman, attracted attention on the popular audition programme ‘Britain's Got Talent’ and made her long-sought album debut with ‘I Dreamed a Dream’.
Among rock bands, U2 (C/ No Line On The Horizon), Pearl Jam, Green Day, and Jets released new albums one after the other. Among young artists, Animal Collective's (D/ Merryweather Post Pavilion), The Horrors, and Grizzly Bear attracted attention with their new releases. Among solo artists, the young UK singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini's (E/ Sunny Side Up) and Canadian Michael Bublé's (F/ Crazy Love) were big hits. The latter in particular appealed to a wide audience and was a huge success, topping the album charts in the US, UK, and other countries.

IN LYRICS
Inseparable from this album is George Orwell's 1984. (2/ Resistance) is about forbidden love under surveillance and information control, and (4/ United States Of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)) about perpetual war to maintain the power of the rulers (the title is taken from American political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski's 1997 book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives). Both clearly follow the world of '1984', but in fact the lyrics can also be seen as a reference to the ‘crisis of the moment’ in the sense that they illuminate the geopolitics of post-9/11, with today's controlled society in which individuals and their information can be monitored from every angle, from CCTVs to satellites on the ground and eventually the internet network. The lyrics can also be seen as a reference to the ‘current crisis’. (1/ Uprising) and (7/ MK Ultra), which deal with mind control, also encompass a similar worldview, but at the same time Matthew tries to present a critical perspective on the crisis and hope by confronting the unshakable will and love that lies beyond it, in a situation where the ‘individual’ is being lost. This is the deeper meaning behind the song titles ‘Uprising’ and ‘Resistance’.
"Love" is also the warp of the lyrical universe, with occasional moments of overt expression. In an interview with Q magazine, Matthew says, ‘It's a personal song about me and my girlfriend’ (3/ Undisclosed Desires), which is a typical example of this. The song is Muse's version of a ‘hymn to love’, a sublime love song.
When I heard the news that Muse were to perform with U2's The Edge on stage at Glastonbury in 2010, it occurred to me that ‘The lyrics of both bands share a common language of “protest” and “love”’. Matthew's world will continue to grow in scale within the time axis of ‘now’. —Abe Kaoru

Translator's Notes: We're... actually not done here yet. We still have their live DVDs to cover.
if anybody wants to check who is signed to a zionist record company, all names listed below, quoted from zionistsinmusic "we need to demand that all pro-Palestinian artists make a real impact by divesting from these major labels. The label cannot profit without the artist."

9 albums for 2023
I definitely listened to less ~new~ music last year compared to other years.. and some of the albums I listened to a lot just ended up being “in preparation” for the concerts I was going to. But in no particular order
Let Her Burn - Rebecca Black (2023) (it was so very annoying to have to be like “Yes. Rebecca Black. She still makes music and it’s great” to everyone who was like ??? when I mentioned going to her show. I had a great time and her music is so fun)
Intellectual Property - Waterparks (2023) (this was funny because like a day? two days? after I went to this show, the lead singer of the band followed Louis and was desperately trying to hit him up… curious what came of that)
Last Night in the Bittersweet - Paolo Nutini (2022) (would you believe me if I said I listened to this album a lot even before Louis started sad-boy posting the songs, because it’s the truth!!)
So Much (for) Stardust - Fall Out Boy (2023) (pretty sure this was Kari’s doing. also it was so shocking to hear Patrick Stump singing the opening credits for the cartoons my nephew was watching lol)
Faith In The Future - Louis <3 (2022) (I mean… he’s been my top artist since 2017 so of course I would be listening to his newest album now)
Unreal Unearth - Hozier (2023) (Hozier <3)
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan (2023) (I think I saw someone mention the album on twitter and randomly decided to check it out, and then had it on repeat for like 2 weeks straight)
Rookery - Giant Rooks (2017) (probably one of my favorites out of all of Louis’ openers tbh)
Go Farther In Lightness - Gang of Youths (2017) (one of my favorite albums of all time)
Not sure who’s already done this but I’ll tag @babygirljake @milf-louis @elceeu2morrow @gracefullou and anyone else who wants do it 🫡
It’s me again the Mr Blobby anon 😬 thank you for braving the buried trauma to answer my silly ask.
I had another thought about what kind of music the boys might’ve listened to in their formative years. I know everyone and their grandmother was listening to Oasis and The Smiths back then and stuff like The Stone Roses and The Verve made it across the pond to us too, but I was wondering if there were any deep cuts that were big locally that maybe the rest of the world wouldn’t really know about?
On a more serious note - I’m writing a fic about the boys and I think I’ve mostly managed to not butcher Soap’s accent and colloquialisms too bad, but I struggle with the rest of them. I feel like I should be writing more of Ghost and Price’s accent but I just don’t know how. With Gaz it’s easier since his accent isn’t as pronounced, but then comes the job of using the right regional slang for everyone and that just sends me into and overwhelming spiral of despair because there’s just so many different regional accents in such a small area 😵💫
Do you have any tips or resources for figuring it all out?
p.s. sorry for being the most longest winded anon in the world 🫣
p.p.s. thank you again for all your Brit picking ♡
hi anon! (i'm not calling you mr blobby anon, that just seems mean!) i'm glad my horrified shrieking about mr blobby was entertaining!
i'm going to pop my reply under a read more because i know i'm about to get really long winded!
first up music. personally i have a sneaky headcanon that soap has a secret fondness for tinchy stryder and n-dubz, price is big into the buzzcocks, gaz still loves labrinth and tinie tempah and ghost has a secret fondness for stereophonics.
but as for hidden treasures? paolo nutini, the libertines, razorlight, leona lewis, birdy, professor green, jack johnson, the wombats, snow patrol, emeli sandé, rudimental, the ting-tings, dido, jess glynne.
hopefully amongst my little list there's some artists you haven't heard of before!
now onto the meaty bit, the bit i was immediately excited about discussing with you. i'm going to break it down what you said so i can dedicate proper paragraphs to each character!
"I think I’ve mostly managed to not butcher Soap’s accent and colloquialisms too bad..."
i have 100% faith that you'll be fine with soap's accent. just remember that soap speaks Scots (which is a recognised language) as well as english. an in-game example of this was when he said "away an' boil yer heid!". personally i find listening to clips of Still Game (a glaswegian based scottish sitcom) really helps me to get my ear in for soap's speech patterns BUT remember that it isn't actually confirmed where exactly soap was born and raised in scotland so there is leeway.
just remember don't go too mad with adding Scots words or phrases, a few indications of soap's accent is fine but don't get too heavy handed otherwise it'll be nearly unreadable.
"I feel like I should be writing more of Ghost and Price’s accent but I just don’t know how."
i can completely understand the difficulty with this one!
so canonically ghost is from manchester, however to my ear there isn't much of a manc accent going on when he speaks in-game (which is a crying shame in my opinion)! take a listen to jamie tartt from Ted Lasso to get an idea of what a manc accent sounds like. notably, the -g off -ing sounds are missing and there's a nasal quality (which i LOVE) to the way he says "you" and "me" that sounds more like "ya" and "meh" to my ear.
this link from the university of manchester has some common slang terms used around manchester that might be helpful too!
as for price, according to the CoD wiki he's from herefordshire but his accent has definitely been flattened out to sound more like Received Pronunciation (RP). herefordshire has definitely got a very interesting accent because of where it is geographically in the UK so it has welsh borders, gloucester and west midlands influences to it. my only recommendation for price is to listen to his voice lines and watch the playthroughs (sorry!) to get an idea of his speech patterns.
however, if you wanted to make me very happy you could definitely sprinkle in some of barry sloane's scouse accent (apologies for the link, it's VERY cringey) but don't feel that you have to!
"With Gaz it’s easier since his accent isn’t as pronounced..."
this is actually really interesting to me because gaz sounds SO much like a londoner to my ears (i think i spoke to someone before about gaz's accent and i think i said it was either south london or west london).
as for slang for gaz? i can only recommend that you find some clips of Love Island UK to hear some of the slang phrases he'd use OR listen to the recon by fire mission to get your ear in for his speech patterns (also a very good resource for price's accent too).
i hope my break down of accents and slang has helped just a little bit but if you have any more questions for me i'm more than happy to help! 💜
