We are not judging how bad the movie is, we are judging which adapted the book the worst. There are good movies that are bad adaptions.
Propaganda below the cut (spoilers may apply)
Mortal Engines:
GIVE HESTER A DEFORMING SCAR YOU COWARDS. But in all seriousness, there was a lot wrong with the adaptation. The book was very cinematic to begin with, with lots of grandeur and intrigue as Tom starts to unpack all the brainwashing he's grown up with. Then the movie turned Hester into a generic girl boss, wiped out all of Tom's character growth to make him a useless sidekick, and took out a lot of the cool world building and political intrigue. Oh, and heaven forbid Hester, who had her face run into with a sword, be in anyway disfigured. Even though Hester being "ugly" was what made me love her so much as an insecure teen girl.
Joyless. Unwilling to actually give the female lead a decent facial scar which is just embarrasing. Shoved in a chosen one narrative where there didn't need to be. Changed the entire ending from tragic to saves the day style shit. Worst of all it's a really niche property and seeing it suck ass is all that most people are ever gonna see of it but the books are So Good. CGI does slap tho
The cool, severely scarred female character is replaced by a girl with a teensy little cut on her face. The robot ethics are removed and the humor is stupid
Stormbreaker:
GOD it sucks the og book series deals with the whole fact that if a 14 y/o schoolboy became a spy he’d have TRAUMA and MISERY and HATE IT AND THE GOVERNMENT TOO but then the movie is like. la de da this is so fun tee hee i love being a spy :))) i hate it. i hate it with the power of 1000 suns why are you trying to make this shit GLAMOROUS. especially i hate the us release poster what IS that
Gonna be honest I watched this years ago so I don't remember exactly what was different but it was different enough that I didn't like it and I LOVED the book series
The absolute slap stickery of a mess that movie made of the supposedly cool spy boy and his descent into darkness due to adults who only use him for their own means , ptsd symptoms rising be damned

hi!! i reread New Wave ~four times in the last month (there's a pdf of it on my secure State work computer lol) and i just wanted to say that the magic of it never wears off. every time i read it i get hit by waves of Damn She's Just Like Me (minus the vigilante bit) and for this last month i've been trying to word out just how much New Wave affected how i view 14 y/o go-nowhere girl i once was. & how genuinely good of a narrative it is. and funny! runnin out of characters thank you 4 sharing!
This ask makes me very happy!!!! I love achieving my goal!!! Yes baby this one WAS for the 14yo go-nowhere girls! She IS, indeed, just like me!!! It is for the girls who didn't have a hero and it is about the girl who became the hero she needed and it is a world where Homestuck exists in the year of our lord 1997!!! Thanks for the ask. <3

maybe i'm just too old for fandom but the ofmd girlies (gender neutral) expressing abject misery over the trajectory of season 2 is... weird to me?? it's a story in three acts, in a three act story the second act is traditionally bit where the going gets tough. it's a story about stories, there has to be conflict and drama otherwise there's no point to it, and the stories we tell ourselves and the narratives we choose to believe often bring us into conflict with ourselves and others, even those we love deeply. it's also a story about trauma and how the hurt we endure leads us to hurt others and ourselves even if we want the best for everybody, and how we figure out ways to minimise the trauma and help each other heal. the story has to go somewhere. this particular story has to go here. it's a very emotionally charged story and it's easy to get involved in the characters' feelings (which is good! that's a good thing!!) but. idk i see a post talking about switching off the episodes as soon as the credits roll bc ur so upset by the main characters breaking up for the 45th time and im like. respectfully wtf is wrong with u. if you got the story you wanted where everything is fine and the literally middle-aged but emotionally 14 y/o pirates got to together with no complications and were happy all the time you would be bored out of your goddamn mind. and it wouldn't get renewed for a third season

One thing that will never fail to make me laugh is that LB deadass called her villain the Darkling, like, the kind of nickname I would come up in the middle of my teenage emo phase that I 10/10 do not regret to this day, and also the kind of nickname that's so on the nose that I'd honestly think there is going to be some twist, because, come on, you can't be THAT DUMB, but nope! Turns out the guy called THE DARKLING WAS EVIL ALL ALONG! *gasp*
I mean, technically the Darkling is a title as if someone who comdands the shadows. In the hands of a better, more given to nuance writer that doesn't think that any kind of darkness is complete evil it wouldn't bother me. So I see where she wanted to 'get' there but also... Yeah. She flat out said that it was her very first book and that she had never written one before and I am like... Yeah, I see it, but come on, the woman is an apparent English major. Are you telling me that she didn't write anything in her entire life? Because her writing looks like my writing when I was thirteen.
I think I wouldn't be so upset with her books if they weren't an insult to female desire like... The amount of times that Alina is slut shamed by the narrative and by other characters is... Worrying. It's like a cautionary tale written by a 14 y/o anti, not a book written by a grown arse woman. The only 'intelligent' thing she did was completely bait about the ETL love story to sell her boring The Heroine Kills Her Shadow, Childhood Friends to Lovers "Endgame". Because let's be honest, these books wouldn't have sold if it wasn't for the Darkling and the baiting.

is hot dagn trans? i mean, in the old comic's refs she was referred as "girl??" but it wasn't really confirmed elsewhere. also, i have an archive of the old comic tho its still missing a few pages and im not sure if im allowed to share it. surely, someone out there has the original pages...
Hot Dagn had loose attachment to the concept of being ‘girl’ like a young cis person who always had people telling them who they are and then kept telling themselves that they wouldn’t change, which was my experience, at the time, of identifying as a feminine nonbinary person, (I’m now nonbinary in a way that is Trans Dude) but that was circa 2015 and as it stands now the characters are in a more mouldable state thanks to them not being in a currently ongoing narrative. SO this is to say Hot Dagn’s nonbinaryness can be read in any way you wish since I choose to be less specific as I was then, her pronouns are she/they. Honestly u can change my mind on anything regarding these characters cuz of this mouldable state, like I think of Jon newfound feminineness still and it warms my heart, though much like that last ask week or so ago asking if Indigo is bi, the only thing that can not be changed is Bonbon and Pluck TRANS’D THEY GENDERS I love them
Sorry I just rambled about hot dagn and gender for a very long time I think it’s interesting to think about OOPS, as for second part of this ask, PLEASE. Don’t share the lost pages, someone else tried to do that two years ago and it made me upset. I already have all the pages in their original form and more, I am purposely not sharing them because I want it to stay as lost media, at least for now. And it would really suck if it was uploaded from someone other than me because it’s my artwork first and foremost. Why is this u may ask, I just don’t want that version of it’s story to exist, I reread it once and thought it was still good and that I was hard on myself but it doesn’t change the fact that I’d rather it be lost....
Hot Dagn still exists in my brain and I often think about what it would be like if I worked on it again, though because it’s something that some people have prior knowledge of, it always makes me worry that people are going to hate whatever it ends up being and prefer the older version. Which makes me not want to do anything with it in the first place, but I am still attached to the characters and do think of new ideas, so it’s become something of a complex/cycle of thought. I wish that I could be less worried and perfectionist when it comes to comics/stories, because I really did used to simply create it as it were any other activity when I was younger, but having bad weird brain that says you can’t do this cuz X and Y and Z is much like two surly Oompa Loompas holding me down. One day I’ll make a story again and not worry about it not being good enough to deserve existing
*14 yr old me walks up to me* haha :^] it’s just a silly dog comic *i look at them* your fucjkign right *my 14 yr old self* >:^O DID YOU JSUT SWEAR !!! Ok and with myself going into jokey mode to protect me from being emo I end this post thank u for the question and for still thinking about my ol comic!!!! You can just keep those comic pages you have as if they were rare scrolls you found hidden in a temple, your secret little treasure.

Haven't done this in a while but I had the time so why not?
1.- Pizza Girl by Kyoung Jean Frazier
🌟🌟🌟🌟
I really did like it, reminded me a lot of "Convinience store woman". Like clearly our protagonist needed thrapy ASAP to help her deal with her dad's death, her pregnancy, her attraction to women and hell just for existing as an Asian woman in the USA, but I liked how messy and obsesive she was and how the author allowed her to be fucked up and take bad decisions, I love to see female characters simply exist, it's also a pretty short read so I definitely recommend it.
2.-The Authentics by Abdi Nazemian
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Daría is a persian teen who is really involved in her cultural background and feels that the most important thing one can be is authentic, so that's the name she and her friends take for their clique. But everything comes crashing down on her when she discovers she is adopted, and soon follows an identity crisis. I loved it so much, it felt pretty realistic, like Daría could be self absorbed and unlikeable at times, but who wasn't as a teen? And we get such beautiful heartwarming moments between Daría and her family and friends. Totally recommend it.
3.- The Mall by Megan McCafferty
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Cassie has her life completely mapped out but nothing goes quite as planned, first she gets mononucleosis and after she gets better gets dumped and fired almost simultaneously. Determined not to let it get the best of her, Cassie gets a brand new job, reconnects with an old friend and even finds a hidden treasure. This one is so much fun, all the 90s references and the growth Cassie goes through is amazing, honeslty i would love to see this as a Netflix movie.
4.- Luster by Raven Leilani
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book was hard, Edie is a very raw character, at first she seems flippant even when describing disturbing facts about her past or details about her relationship with a much older man she seems to be talking about something that happened to someone else all this to cope dealing with her solitude, her trauma, her self hate. And gosh it was so intresting to see her interact with Rebecca and Akila, especially Akila as Edie finds kinship in this young girl not only cuz they are both black but because they are both lost and afraid.
5.- Lakewood by Megan Giddings
🌟🌟🌟
Lena decides to participate on a financially compensated medical experiment so her mom can get proper medical care and to lessen their debts after her Grandmother's death.
So I had many mixed feelings about this, on one hand I liked that we are adressing how sistematical racism has permited experiments on black people with no consequences at all and how it has been happening for decades, but there were certain parts of the book that I couldn't enjoy as much because they were very trippy like I get we are on Lena's mind as things are becoming muddled up because of the medications and all those mind games and the words they have her memorize and repeat but all of it took me a bit away from the story. Still I do recommend it just be aware there is quite a bit of body horror in this so if you are sqeamish better skip it.
6.-The Voting Booth - Brandy Colbert
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Marva and Duke meet on election day as she helps him find the precint he is registered on.
This is very enjoyable, the story is very straightforward, and it insists on our right and responsability to vote even if we feel our vote alone can't possibly change all the injustice we see in the world. And also the romance was cute and developed slowly as Marva and Duke are just knowing each other. Really cute and quick read.
7.- Such a fun age - Kiley Reid
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Emira works as a babysitter for the Chamberleins' . She loves her little charge Briar, although she feels preassured to seek a 'real job' by her friends and by her own economic troubles. Emira soon finds herself in the middle of a tug of war between her boss Alix who tries to befriend her, and Kelley the guy she is dating.
So much drama. This is a great example of what performative activism looks like, first Alix is completely nuts, from her obsession to be seen as this wonderful understanding girl boss activist and the down right creepy sense of entitlement to Emira's friendship and intimacy. Like it doesn't surprise me she chose to victimize herself instead of recognizing it had all been a misunderstanding. And even then she still wants to seem atractive to the man she feels victimized by. Girl no.
Kelley is the ultimate fake woke ally. Dude Robbie was wrong period, he had no business inviting people over to someone else's house no matter the color of his skin. You don't get to talk over Emira on matters of what a person of color should do or feel on certain situations. That said it was so funny when he and Alix called each other out for their fetishization of people of color and yet none of them actually gave a damn about what Emira thought/felt/percieved. They just wanted her stamp of approval so they could pat themselves in the back for being such good allies.
8.- The Life and (Medieval) times of Kit Sweetly by Jamie Pacton
🌟🌟
Kit is working as a serving wench at the Castle, medieval themed restaurant run by her uncle, though she really wants to be a Knight, not only cuz the better pay would help around the house but because she really admires Joan of Arc, problem is the Castle management doesn't allow for anyone who is not a cis male to be a knight. Kit is set on changing that.
Ok so I feel a bit lukewarm toward this. Kit in my opinion doesn't get much growth, it seems she just can do whatever and her friends have to be ok w it, her romance w her friend feels pulled out of nowhere like Jett at one point tells her he is not intrested in dating her and then he is ???, those GoT references killed me, I get it I watched the show and sometimes even enjoyed it but it's not representative of anything medieval and Kit was always talking about how much she liked the actual history of the medieval times so...
Also as much as this book was about feminism and how we should fight for equal job oportunities, it feels as though Kit only cared about medieval woman who fought physically and not on the badass medieval woman, like idk it feels as a rejection of tradicional feminity like even the girl playing the Princess is a jerk. But I did like some parts, like her decision to confront her asshole dad to help her mom and the girls training together.
9.-Cien años de soledad de Gabriel Garcia Marquez
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
10.-The Monsters of music by Rebecca F. Kenney
🌟🌟🌟
This is a gender-swaped modern retelling of the Phantom of the Opera.
It was creative to make Mel, our Phantom, a true magical creature, and the singing contest was also cool. Like don't get me wrong I did have fun reading this but it also felt pretty unpolished like most characters were teens on the contest and that kinda made me roll my eyes a bit, like unless it's the Voice Kids age ranges are quite ample on this kind of shows, also kinda clumsy the addition of the magical elements with the modern setting, Kiyo didn't make much of an impression with me even when Christine is my fave on the original book. Still if you are a Phan like me you might wanna check this one out.
11.- Anna K by Jenny Lee
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a modern americanized ya retelling of Anna Karenina.
Not gonna lie this made me cry so much at the end. I really liked Anna and Vronski together so much, and I don't like the love at first sight trope, but here it felt so inevitable. Anna was so self contained until she met him and could truly explore being herself and they really loved each other so much. Also I liked the treatment of the side characters Kimmie and Dustin were well developed and I really enjoyed this one can't wait to get to the second book.
12.- Wonderland by Zoje Stage
🌟🌟🌟
It was ok, but I was actually a bit disappointed cuz I had such high expectations for it. Like for about half the book I was really into the atmospheric vibe the book pulls you into, but as we get the reveal it started to go down hill for me, and the ending left me feeling meh. But maybe it was just not my cup of tea.
13.-Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
🌟🌟🌟🌟
This book is so well crafted!!! I love how it goes back and forth between past and present , first it feels as if history is repeating itself, then as both narratives unfold we start to question and discovering things and the twist at the end was chillin and masterful, I truly and wholeheartedly recommend it.
14.- The Girl with the louding voice by Abi Daré
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Adunni, a teenage girl, flees from her husband to work as a maid in Lagos, though everything she has ever wanted is to study.
This broke my heart, as it reflects how people coming from rural backgrounds get taken advantage of in the City, like similar things happen here in Mexico, but also it made me glad to see Adunni fight and keep her spirit so no one could ever silence her.
15.- The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Immanuel does her very best to fit in Bethel, follow the scriptures and the Prophets words, but nothing seems to be enough to erase her mother's sin especially when the Darkwood seems to pull her in. As a plague starts to ravage Bethel, Immanuel has to face her past to save her people.
So frickin' good !!!! This story is great, mainly about the explotation of woman and young girls by people in power (in this case a church), the atmosphere is always tense, Ezra and Immanuel 's relationship is very well developed and one can really see how loyal they are to each other. A great option for horror fans.

Is it just me who feels that Leo’s relationship with Calypso is super inappropriate? Calypso is older than the olympians and Leo is 15 or 16, even as a kid I was so uncomfortable with that. The fandom never talks about it though, even RR critics don’t seem to care that much. I just find it so weird too that it’s always characters of colour being put in these creepy age gap relationships. And by weird I mean racist.
yeah calypso’s kinda of a more ???? type of situation bc: just WHAT is her age after all?? she’s been on an island for thousands of years, right. she doesn’t age bc the island’s magic keeps her from doing so, right. so technically, if rick wrote her as a 16 y/o then her mental age would also still be that of a 16 y/o, right. mental age wise is there anything that would keep her from dating another person her age? no
but then she’s also thousands of years old like 😬 i remember in tkc anubis being referred to as the “baby” of the gods bc he was younger than them (around 3000 or so years old), and this being sort of used as a way of saying he was inexperienced, a tad bit immature and you get my drift... basically as an excuse to pass off a 3000 y/o immortal deity as suitable dating material for a 13 y/o mortal girl (sadie)
i digressed but calypso’s thousands of years old in canon!! let’s not forget rick still kept her og mythology narrative of falling in love and being in a relationship with odysseus, along with the pirate drake, who are both ADULT MEN. like i’m very much trying to come up with ways to think this through but i legit cannot. she’s 16. but she’s slept with adult men??? then she fell in love with 14 y/o percy. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH ALL THIS I DO NOT UNDERSTAND
and like you said, leo is yet another character of colour that’s paired off with someone who doesn’t exactly meet the criteria of being his actual age! first hazel with frank, then sadie with both anubis and walt, followed by leo and calypso, and we finish off with the possibility of reyna and apollo (which thankfully never went anywhere further than just being a possibility)
take all this into consideration and what do u get besides the feeling that someone’s very wrong here?? “uncomfortable” is damn right anon!!

Conflict & Characterization Exercise / Challenge (Mostly) for Screenwriting
(Note: This exercise can also be performed on written narrative forms like fiction, but it is probably best utilized for visual forms like film/screenwriting. Still, fiction is welcome!)
The art of introducing conflict indirectly is probably one of the most useful tools to a writer of any story form. Sometimes, conflict can be introduced directly, but other times, this isn’t appropriate, or it’s far too on the nose. If you have a character that is avoiding their conflict, or if you don’t want your story to just dump exposition everywhere, then you may want to work on revealing conflict in a more indirect way. This flatters the reader and makes for very smart, realistic storytelling.
One way to practice this is to write a character with an internal, chronic conflict into a setting that has nothing to do with that conflict.
First, you need a chronic conflict. This is usually something internal, but it doesn’t have to be. Chronic just means ongoing, continuous. This is the conflict that has been present in the character since before the story’s beginning. Going back to my previous post, in the movie clip of Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, Bill Murray’s character’s chronic conflict is his loneliness, mainly due to his failing marriage.
But, instead of setting that scene in a more direct way, such as Murray walking in on his wife, or catching her on the phone with another guy--he’s at a pool party. He’s performing a mundane task. He’s jumping off a diving board. How he does it is so telling of what he’s feeling, of what his inner conflict is. Certainly, Wes Anderson is very stylistic in his portrayal of this idea, but the basics are obvious to us, even through such an indirect means.
So, here’s the formula for this exercise:
Chronic Conflict  +  Unrelated Setting  =  Scene
You can come up with this yourself, but you want the setting to be as random and unrelated as possible. If a character just got dumped, they can’t meet their ex randomly; they can’t be stuck alone on Valentine’s Day.
I’ve also made a list of possible things prompts for this exercise below (keep reading). For funsies, you can use these if you’d like! Also, if you want me (or anyone else) to comment or give critique on your exercise, reblog your response to this!
Directions: Use the first letter of your Tumblr username, and the date (number) of your birthday to choose your prompt. If you want to do this multiple times, you can pick a random letter & number out of a hat or something.
Try to make your scenes as indirect as possible; do your best not to TELL us what the conflict is, and instead use your setting/task to SHOW us what the character is going through. Don’t directly inform us that Bob just went through a divorce as he orders a latte; show us how a divorced man would ask for a latte. How many ways are there to order a latte? See if you can come up with a way that really indicates the conflict as well as possible.
(Note: If you want to do this in a fiction format, you may. If you want to write a screenplay but don’t know how, feel free to write out a simple narrative summary or outline of the scene.)
CONFLICTS:
A - A man feels like a bad father.
B - A person with a very religious family background is losing their faith.
C - The CEO of a large company feels lonely.
D - A woman feels unattractive.
E - A man is unsatisfied with his job.

M - A person feels replaceable and forgotten in their family life.
N - A boy can’t make friends at college.
O - A person wants to have sex with someone other than their current partner.
P - A loved one in this person’s family has died recently.
Q - A girl feels lonely at school.
R - A man feels unattractive.
S - A woman is unsatisfied with her job.
T - A person is deeply attracted to someone that isn’t their partner.
U - A person’s parents think they’re a disappointment.
V - A person is still grief-stricken over the death of a loved one, years later.
W - A guy got dumped by his partner.

So I guess I will have to tackle this topic again.
Just so people understand the difference between redemption and character development.
Example of redemption: Severus Snape. He spent most of Harry’s years at Hogwarts abusing him simply cuz he resented his father, and ONLY protected him at times just cuz he loved his mother. But in his last minutes, Snape proved not to be siding with Voldemort, gave his memories to Harry and that was enough for Harry to laureate him as a hero and even name his child after him claiming he was one of the bravest men he’d met (then again he also named his child after Dumbledore who was manipulative and deceitful af, something no one ever mentions, so Harry clearly didn’t have good judgement).
That is redemption. That is what people might complain about. Some characters do deserve this treatment: They did awful stuff but then do ONE good thing and regret their actions, and everything is forgiven. A lot of characters, tho, don’t deserve this. Snape didn’t.
Example of character development: Zuko. He spent 80% of the show chasing after Aang and his friends and being a violent maniac. BUT he goes on a journey of his own to grow up, where he has to face the traumas of his childhood, and the fact that his father’s actions were not justified, but most importantly, that his trauma and father’s actions didn’t justify his OWN actions. And it’s not an easy journey, as he struggles emotionally in every step, with having to acknowledge the Fire Nation was wrong, that his family was wrong, that Iroh’s kindness wasn’t weakness, that receiving love and protection doesn’t undermine honor, that accomplishing his father’s orders doesn’t give him honor. He learns how to be kinder and sees first hand the consequences of his own nation’s imperialistic ways. He sees slavery and oppression and child soldiers and abuse. And he tries to be better. He recognizes his bad actions. He offers teaching Aang how to be a firebender, and guess what? It took A LONG WHILE to the other characters to even trust him, especially Katara, and that didn’t mean they saw him as a friend or that they forgave him. Aang did these latest two things faster but because that was in Aang’s nature. The narrative never downplays what Zuko had done even when he was a kid too and arguably just another victim.
The difference between redemption and character development is actually just the way stories and writers have been tackling both to the point in which no, they’re not interchangeable, but can be used together. So, I can see where someone is coming from when they feel a certain character doesn’t deserve a redemption arc, but I’m never assuming they’re talking about character development. Every character, even the worst one NEEDS character development whether that development is for better or worse, but even if it’s for the better, that doesn’t mean the story and characters are forgiving them or pretending their actions were less bad than what they actually were.
A friend uses Teruki and Touichirou (mp100) as an example of this double standard in fandom of “Yes to Teru’s redemption arc but NO to Touichirou’s redemption arc”. The thing is, in my opinion, neither of the two was redeemed. They just went through character development. How do we know that?
Well, for starters Teru never stopped being the sadistic, violent kid we meet at first. He just tries to actively be a more humble person, while simply failing at it. We don’t have Teruki being treated as a hero, with a sudden pure personality, or being forgiven by everyone else. Mob didn’t really understand what had happened during their fight (he didn’t even understand what happened at the LOL cult) so he brushed it off and felt sorry that he did bad things to Teru (but that’s to show us Mob’s twisted perception of his own powers right there). However, the rest of the cast NEVER even learned of what happened at Teru’s school. From what we know of the others they wouldn’t have brushed it off or blamed Mob. This arc closes finally when Teru chooses to save the citizens instead of facing Mob, finally understanding selflessness. That’s not redemption. That’s character development.
Then Touichirou. He was ready to fight Mob again, not to be a hero; he intended to kill Mob this time. What was different from last time? Mob was still a 14 y/o middle-schooler. He’d gone on a rampant but all Touichirou knew was that this 14 y/o child was not able to control his powers anymore. That’s it. And he still wanted to kill him. He was still the same as before. BUT during the fight he pretended to die as his last resort to kill Mob, so that he would become a martir. THAT would have been undeserved redemption, and THAT was what filled Shou with even more disappointment about his father. So when Shou gave him one last chance to not fuck up and to leave with him and be the father he needed, Touichirou stopped and took the chance. That’s not redemption. That’s character development.
So if someone says again “I DON’T want a redemption arc” for whatever character, what they really mean is that they don’t want the narrative to give the character a free pass to the good side. Most of the time that’s not good writing, it’s bad writing (and can feel manipulative to the audience). Character development, tho, yeah that’s always good writing.

John Egbert
strap in this got long
First impression
honestly it would just have to be like who tf is this bastard bc he is the first panel of homestuck… idk he is a sweet & silly boy and i love him i think 14 y/o me liked him mostly as a foil for other characters i loved bc i tended to ship him a lot (namely karkat dave and vriska *comphet shudder* i still love a pale johnvris tho)
Impression now
wow ive been through a lot with this boy… idk he honestly has grown a lot but not in any sort of way i could relate to? like i always loved him a lot but as the post act five updates started rolling out i just found it a lot easier to identify with dave rose and jade’s character growth? and the way that he started to get so immensely dissatisfied with his situation KIND OF historically mirrored me falling out with homestuck like. in 2015 when i started college and it was on hiatus near constantly i sort of stopped engaging with the fandom right alongside john starting to disengage from the narrative itself lmao but yeah
hes a good kid. goku-aligned. epilogue “epic divorce man” john do not interact
Favorite moment
oh boy i absolutely LOVE his act 5 interactions with the trolls… and the kids honestly all of them he is a smug bastard who loves his friends and enthusiastically gets to know a bunch of alien children threatening him with death lmfao the “hi karkat!” log still gets me to this day.
Tumblr media
OH and the “haha spiders are gross” one @ vriska
Tumblr media
ok i uhhh got into it im just. heres some more
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
story wise though i think my favorite part was after he got stabbed by jack and was reborn for the first time…. i fucking love that panel. this one i have drawn it 1000 times
Tumblr media
Idea for a story
LOL i have no idea uhh. i rewrite the epilogue but instead of john being unfortunately heterosexual and marrying roxy while emotionally involved with terezi of all people ?? not the point anyway he actually talks with his friends about shit because i swear that boy is the most compulsively heterosexual character in the story hes worse than dave bc he was completely isolated with his twin sister on a ship for the majority of his formative teen years… im going no where with this i would just like john to have some emotional vulnerability
Unpopular opinion
hes the worst beta kid… im sorry again i LOVE john but not as much as i love the rest of them. i feel like a parent saying which child is my least favorite im sorry john you were half of my age 14 otp tho johnkat 4ever but not really because karkat turned out to be probably TOO emotionally vulnerable for him john would hurt that boys feelings
Favorite relationship
oof ok i sort of just started going into this johnkat still holds a very dear place in my heart (@ promstuck ) but unfortunately i just dont think the post act 5 characterization aged that ship very well. johndave is cute but kind of boring (im sorry hayden) but tbh with the way john grew up?? i like dirkjohn a lot i think they could be good together because john has more of a fucking backbone then jake and would be a perfectly affectionate dick to dirk. he needs that. Again Epilogue John Do Not Interact
Favorite headcanon
hes really bad at video games. like genuinely so awful no one in earth c can believe he actually survived sburb

Top 5 Breakdowns over David Tennant- any fandom/show/ play you've seen? I really liked the dw one you did, just hoping you could expand over/ include other things he's been in.
Oh anon you are QUITE the enabler thank you.
So this is like half actual breakdown list and half just like David Tennant recommendations in general because I love that funky little scot.
+1. This isn’t going on the official list because I already did the previous list you mentioned (i’m glad you liked it, btw!!!) but yeah. Doctor Who. He plays the doctor in a very fuckin uhh mercutial way (he plays a lot of characters that way and I am 100% enamored by it every fuckin time he just does it SO WELL AUGH) and like highs were so high and the lows were so low and he was so FURIOUS AND CRUEL but also so GENTLE AND KIND and like oof!! The multifacetedness bitch!!!! That’s what it’s all about babey!!!
5. Good omens. I mean, duh. There was no fucking way I was gonna survive good omens. Like, honestly, even without miss tennant I wouldn’t have survived it because HA HA HA HA H O L Y SHIT MY FAVORITE BOOK FOR THE LAST DECADE WAS GETTING AN ACTUAL SCREEN ADAPTATION I GENUINELY DID NOT THINK WE WOULD EVER BE HERE THIS SHIT IS LIT. but then but THEN it was like. The way that he portrayed crowley definitely fit into a particular niche that david tennant KILLS. Like god okay I could spend an whole fucking essay on this point so I’m gonna distill this down to just. THE moment that I was like “okay okay okay okay fuck I’m GOING THROUGH IT” was when his voice cracks as he tells aziraphale that he lost his best friend because like in context OOF and out of context I have been Pavlovian trained for the past decade to Utterly Lose My Shit when David Tennant is like this close to crying and he expresses that with his whole body THE ASSHOLE! LET ME REST. I THOUGHT I WAS OVER THIS MISTER!!
4. The Escape Artist. Lesser known (I think?), but a VERY GOOD miniseries! The tone is much darker, and he’s a much more serious character. Similar vibes, role wise, to broadchurch. I’m not sure how much rewatch value it has but watching it for the first time had me like MISSION STATUS: SICK!!!! It’s like a cat and mouse mystery and like. I’m not gonna go to in depth into the story because I think it’s more enjoyable to go into it not knowing much and too me it was one of those things that took like 3 hours to watch all of and a full week or two to like. Process. Also I’m not usually one for drama and I was ABOUT it so I would recommend!!!
3. JESSICA JONES (season 1). Holy FUCK dude. Definitely his darkest and most evil role, and the subject matter is VERY heavy and I definitely would NOT recommend it for everyone because it could be, how you say, triggering as fuck or even just because it is incredibly dark and that might not be your thing. Funnily enough, it’s DEFINITELY not my thing, personally, I tend to avoid narratives about sexual assault because so many of them are, uh, ya know, bad, but Jessica Jones season 1 really is done FANTASTICALLY! The David Tennant breakdown was just a level of cognitive dissonance because I had never seen him play like a VILLAIN villain. I mean, yeah, he was Barty Crouch Jr., but that was for like 30 seconds and while the dude was creepy there was a layer of campy over the topness that is present in most fun fantasy franchises. I remember when he was cast as the purple man me and my parents were like. Yeah he’ll obviously crush the role because he’s talented but in the back of our minds we’ll probably still be thinking of like the doctor and I wonder if we can fully accept him playing the role. Yeah there was fucking NONE OF THAT. When he played Purple Man I never ONCE thought of his other roles and I didn’t even, like, think of David Tennant, ya know. I was just like oh shit this man is evil and terrifying and I want him dead! Please die!!! And yes, I know that that’s how acting works or whatever but also ACTING ya know!!! Of any of the roles on this list this one definitely made me be the most like SHE HAS THE RANGE because I really think it highlights how INCREDIBLY GOOD at his job he is!!! I have not ever rewatched Jessica Jones season 1 though because while it is honestly like a triumph of television it is also A Lot to deal with and I am very rarely in the kind of mindset where I’m able to watch it. But yeah. David Tennant knows what the fuck he’s doing and it is very good.
2. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING BABEY. Literally I knew nothing about the play or why I should care but the promo material was like. Catherine Tate and David Tennant are costars again and I was like OKAY SIGN ME THE FUCK UP HELL YEAH HELL YEAH HELL YEAH. For real I think on screen chemistry Catherine Tate and David Tennant are one of if not just straight up my favorite duo of all time. They are just so DELIGHTFUL and ENCHANTING and BEWITCHING and basically I want them to costar in everything ever. @azirafeathers was like “sherlock holmes adaptation where she’s sherlock and he’s watson” and I haven’t stopped thinking about that since!!! I would give my left thumb or at least like a solid $60 to see that. Like PLEASE it would be PERFECT. I LOVE THEM. And god this production of much ado is definitely like. “Here’s Benedick and Beatrice. They’re two chaotic dumbass bisexuals that are like fives on the kinsey scale and they fall in love much to their surprise” and it’s TERRIFIC. That’s exactly what I like to see. Like it’s set in the 80s and the set design? The visual gags? The costumes? The soundtrack? THE PHYSICAL COMEDY? It all SLAPS. David Tennant really balances “fun and funky slut” and “utterly PINING idiot” so fucking well. I have said it before and I will say it again David Tennant peaks when Catherine Tate is being mean to him. Also really iconic to give him the role that is like the only man in the play that is (after a bit) CHUGGING his respect women juice. I mean LOOK at this utter buffoon.
Tumblr media
I’m in love. This play made me a proud morosexual. Plus it’s all FREE ON YOUTUBE THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE THREE HOURS AND WANT TO HAVE A GOOD FUCKIN TIME GO WATCH MUCH ADO!!
1. H A M L E T. So imagine that you’re 14 and it’s 3 am and you’re casually watching David Tennant’s hamlet on youtube or at least the parts they put up and you’re painting stars on your ceiling with glow in the dark paint and it makes you realize that you have an excess of black bile and a melancholic temperment and you’ll understand why, while this might not be my all time favorite david tennant role (though it definitely is high up on the list) , this is absolutely my number one David Tennant Related Breakdown. Hoo boy. This probably doesn’t come as a shock to literally anybody that knows me irl bc I Will Not shut up about Hamlet and it is this productions fault. Different people will respond differently too it, and I’m definitely 1000% biased because a: I love him and b: it was the first production I ever watched and it’s what got me On My Bullshit, but this production honestly makes me like. Get Hamlet. Or not get hamlet, personally, as a character, we’re never meant to fully understand him honestly, but it made me understand the ALLURE of the play. I watched it and I was like oh. Yeah. Okay. I can see why people have been obsessed with this for 400 years. I know why it’s considered one of the greatest roles and one of the greatest plays of all time. And I went absolutely feral for it. It solidified Horatio permanently as one of my all time favorite characters in anything ever. David Tennant has this tendency to put manic and desperate energy into the characters that he plays, and that of course works extremely well for hamlet. Plus, like, he plays characters that are drowning, that need the assistance and kindness of love to try and float, and even with that might not be able to keep their heads above water, and the characters that are opposite him are basically always wonderful. Because I am deeply deeply predictable, the core dynamic of Hamlet and Horatio’s relationship is probably like THE most appealing and interesting and important aspect of the play to me, and Peter de Jersey (who is absolutely INCREDIBLE in this production) and David Tennant pull it of breathtakingly beautifully. Every time I watch this I have to lie down for a while. Every time I THINK about this I have to lie down for awhile. So, yeah, number one David Tennant based breakdown is over his hamlet.
Honorable mentions
this gifset-I have not seen what this is actually from but it made me have a conniption. I’m in love with her. She’s my idealized self. I don’t know what to do with myself. I spent 5 hours looking at this now. What the fuck.
The Decoy Bride- I didn’t have a breakdown over it BUT it is a recommendation. Very silly rom com, very much a comfort movie like music and lyrics or singing in the rain for me. Great for sleep overs or rainy sunday afternoons.
Richard II- I haven’t seen it but based on one (1) clip and some stills I would be lost in the sauce for a week after a viewing.
Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger- watch nativity 2 danger in the manger.
Fright Night- jesus fucking CHRIST mister tennant went full slut
Casanova- Mister Tennant Goes Full Slut part 2- has blue colored contacts and it’s weird

Alright, you gotta tell me all the things about "Uproot" because I'm already in love xx (when you've got the time, of course). Love you!
Love you too, angel! Tagging @suits-of-woe because it’s Hamlet, bitch!
Tumblr media
Uproot is a two-part miniseries I’ve been developing for about four years, which could probably best be summarized as “Hamlet for the YA Generation.” It began as a novella, which I then chose to expand into the medium I actually know and love: script-writing. :)
Set in a dystopian future, roughly 200 years after the collapse of the United States of America, Uproot imagines North America as a toxic wasteland divided into large, warring city-states...kind of an industrial, futuristic version of Hellenistic Greece. Each city-state is named for the foreign power that either purchased or pillaged military resources and reinforcements during the Trans-Asiatic Wars. Hence, the sprawling metropolis that was once Washington D.C. is now the city of New Denmark.
With the Wars long over, and Eastern Asia victorious, the city-states of ruined America have crumbled into anarchy. New Denmark alone remains a powerful military state. Ruled by a dynastic monarchy that dates back to the 2050s, the city maintains its vice grip on “stability” through a two-pronged system of Force and Separation. A ruthless and corrupt Royal Police controls the city streets, while the royal family and their elite, privileged Court wall themselves up inside the luxury high-rise known as Elsinore Incorporated.
Elsinore is a fortress: impregnable, bullet-proof, and guarded by the best-maintained army left on the continent of North America. To be behind its gates is to want for nothing. To be outside it is to live in a hell-scape of poverty, disease, corruption, and unconscionable disparity.
Unsurprisingly, this century-long injustice yielded many inner-city rebellions over the years, to no avail. It wasn’t until a young man and his wife arrived from the neighboring city-state of Norway that things really began to change.
The man, Fortinbras Cartwright, had inherited his position as a Chancellor of Norway, but then grown disillusioned with privilege-based politics when he fell in love with Jessalyn, a radical leftist protester. After being exiled from Norway for attempting to overhaul the city’s oligarchy, Fortinbras and Jess found their way to New Denmark, where they pooled their resources (his money; her field experience) and founded a secret organization known as Uproot.
The mission of Uproot was to do the impossible:
Neutralize the Royal Police
Starve out the inhabitants of Elsinore
Storm the tower
Depose the sitting king
Execute the royal family
And --- most importantly --- implement a new representational government of, for, and by the people of New Denmark.
It gained enormous traction and legitimacy thanks to the combination of Fortinbras’ political rhetoric and Jess’ derring-do. Everyone clamored to be a part of the grassroots movement. “Up through the soil, we will rise: fresh, green, and throttling.”
Fortinbras and Jess knew that “the only way to win was to refuse to lose,” so they bided their time, growing their numbers, and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. In those interim years, they had a daughter: Fortinbras Jr.
Raised to fight, spy, and --- most importantly --- lead, Fort spent her entire childhood in the shadow of her family’s divine purpose. No one ever asked her if she wanted to be a military commander-in-training, just like no one ever asked her if she wanted to lose her mother at the age of 10 to a rebel sting gone wrong.
My play begins the night after a colossal battle between the Uproot army and the Police. At the eleventh hour, King Hamlet decided personally to join the fight with his own private militia, which won the day for the nobility. In the chaos, Fort’s father was killed. His final act before dying was to give her his badge, signifying Fort’s new status as Commander-in-Chief of the rebel forces.
Fort is 24 years old. She is grief-stricken. She has no intention of leading the army that cost her BOTH of her parents. Obviously, the rebels have other ideas. They rallied under the name Fortinbras. They will follow the leader who bears that name, regardless of how unprepared --- or unwilling --- she might be.
Uproot, Part 1 follows Fort through the days and weeks following her father’s death, as she tries (and fails) to find a suitable replacement to lead the Uproot cause. The sudden death of King Hamlet and the unexpected marriage and coronation of his brother, a bloodthirsty ex-Police Chief named Claudius, throws a mad wrench into Fort’s plan to abandon New Denmark and fade into the smoke of history. It’s hard to walk away from injustice, once you see up close how insidious it is. When Prince Hamlet, the hyper-privileged young heir to the throne, returns to Elsinore from his studies abroad to confront his uncle, the entire Court begins to unravel and Fort sees a rare opportunity to bring them down once and for all. But is she ready to be the “People’s Princess”? And is she willing to pay the price of freedom?
Uproot, Part 2 begins after the Prince has been sent abroad once more by his uncle, presumably to his death. While the rebels struggle to combat King Claudius’ vicious new political regime, they capture a traveling courtier who offers to get them inside Elsinore’s walls: a young man named Laertes. Their shaky alliance with Laertes proves disastrous, however, and Fort begins to prepare her army for a definitive attack on the castle. As she rises to meet the challenge of leading a sprawling, scattered, hopeless, ragtag army to victory, Fort is forced to confront her past and wrestle with her future. Maybe the woman who fights for freedom shouldn’t be the same woman who defines it. Maybe she’s in this war for all the wrong reasons. But is there a right reason?
While Fort’s story is the primary focus of Uproot, her narrative is intercut with glimpses inside Elsinore Inc. (where the characters we know from Hamlet live and breath) AND flashbacks of the origin story between Fortinbras Sr. and Jess.
The main cast of Uproot is as follows:
Women:
FORTINBRAS (“Fort”) CARTWRIGHT (24 y/o) --- The People’s Princess, Commander of the Uproot Army, daughter of the Rebel King & Queen
THEA (40s) --- Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Uproot’s primary diplomat. Fort’s godmother and chief advisor. BAMF.
LEX (25 y/o) --- Spy/intelligence officer for Uproot. Chief military strategist. Fort’s best friend. Literally the smartest person in the play.
URI (18 y/o) --- Hacker. Tech whiz. Child prodigy. Approach at own risk.
GREER (21 y/o) --- Rescued from the Elsinore prison after 10 years in isolation. Bomb-maker. Law-breaker. General anarchist. Falls head over heels for Uri.
GIGI (14 y/o) --- A mute girl who graffitis coded messages to the army all across New Denmark. Joziah’s niece. The Ultimate Hufflepuff.
OPHELIA (21 y/o) --- Member of the Court. Laertes’ sister. A lot angrier than the Court seems to realize.
GERTRUDE (50s) --- Queen of New Denmark. Claudius’ wife and sister-in-law. Hamlet’s mother. Manic depressive and addicted to pain pills.
JESSALYN (“Jess”) --- Fort’s mother. “Rebel Queen.” A lifelong protestor and activist for social justice. Co-Founder of the Uproot Movement. Daredevil.
Men:
JOZIAH (50s) --- Captain of the Green Elite, a black ops team of left-wing extremists that is only marginally loyal to the Uproot cause. Fort’s advisor. Gruff old codger with a heart of gold.
NALEN (24 y/o) --- Medic and surgeon for the army. Fort’s other best friend. Lex’s fiancé. Allergic to violence. Kindness epitomized.
MERYK (26 y/o) --- Member of the Green Elite. Professional assassin. Uri’s highly protective older brother. Drives Fort crazy until he doesn’t.
CLAUDIUS (50s) --- King of New Denmark. Gertrude’s brother-in-law and husband. Hamlet’s uncle. The Bad Guy.
HAMLET (20s) --- Prince of New Denmark. Gertrude’s son. Maybe a pushover or maybe just depressed?
LAERTES (20s) --- Member of the Court. Ophelia’s older brother. Diplomat for New Denmark. Feisty lil honey badger.
HORATIO (20s) --- Member of the Court. Originally from the Republic of Germany. Met Prince Hamlet at university. Didn’t ask for any of this.
FORTINBRAS CARTWRIGHT Sr. --- Fort’s father. “King of the Weeds.” Founder of the Uproot Movement and its first Commander-in-Chief. Revolutionist.
Aaaaaand I think that’s it! Hope this is interesting, or at least mildly amusing. :) Love you, ladies. xx Claire

3, red, indie, 16, metal, pear (if that's too many just answers the ones you like the most :>)
3: How do you think Midoriya’s conflict with Bakugou will end?
OH JEEZ if we’re talking in Horikoshi Writing standards, it will likely end with them being bffs or whatever without acknowledging how bakugou treated midoriya and the two still having an unhealthy relationship which is just *snap* yep. That’s going in my cringe compilation
the REAL good end though… is the two developing separately and having healthy relationships with other people. i’m so tired of bnha trying to push the narrative that they are GOOD friends and absolutely NEED each other to do their best and it’s like. zzzzz. i sleep. i want them to develop respect for each other and understand one another while also like, not needing each other you feel me… like mutual respect or something because realistically, they cannot be best friends after everything that’s happened. also bakugou still needs to apologize for traumatizing izuku for over ten years and actively try to fix what happened/fix himself so uhhhhhhh Where is it!!!!!
Red: What do you like the most about your favorite ship?
oh i have a whole lot of ships that i love but i’m really into dabihawks and miruyumi right now so i will talk about Them. for dabihawks, i’ve always loved hero/villain relationships that are complex but meaningful for both parties. i can see hawks and dabi reaching some sort of dynamic like that, especially since both have more similarities than they may think. i could go on about dabihawks but basically i love hero/villain ships that aren’t unhealthy and incredibly interesting
for miruyumi, i am a massive lesbian so i love healthy wlw pairings a whole bunch!!! also just. imagining miruko and fuyumi interactions and a slowly blossoming relationship between them is so fun to think about?? i feel like they could learn a lot from each other, especially in regards to the hero system and how it affects hero families/everyday civilians. i just love it when girls love girls, that’s what it’s all about babey!!!!
Indie: Opinions on the Traitor Kaminari theory?
i will be 100% real with you, i truly do not care about traitor theories like At All. they were kind of interesting at first but i feel like it’s just been so overdone with characters that don’t even make sense (like traitor kirishima he would NEVER) and none of them are really… interesting to me. i guess if i were to find some care in the traitor subplot, i would like it to be a main character that actually has solid evidence/reasons for siding with the villains, because for something like this i want to feel betrayed. i want to be angry at a character i’ve come to support and adore, but it has to make sense!!! i don’t want it to be someone for cheap shock value like midoriya or kirishima, which is what i’m fearing.
but basically i truly do not care for the traitor subplot, especially since it hasn’t been brought up since like. the forest camp arc. it’s just boring to me at this point
16: Favorite student(s) outside of Class 1-A?
kendou!!! a butch icon i love her. also the big three especially nejire!!!! also all th 1b girls i support them. OH ALSO mei. basically i stan all of the girls
Metal: Which villain’s quirk would you want for yourself?
my memory sucks so i can’t really remember all the quirks of every villain but all for one’s quirk is actually… kinda cool? i would use it for good though, try to help people out instead of being evil and all that… also i just want to body slam all for one so hard that it kills him instantly
Pear: What was your reaction to Todoroki’s backstory?
OKAY i’ve been a shouto stan since 2015 when the sports festival arc was wrapping up and like, that shit hurted!!!!! reading his fight with midoriya was so fucking emotional and i remember my 14 y/o self sitting in the kitchen, eating hersey kisses, deciding to stan forever!!!! i love him i want him to be happy :(

I'm curious how you'd change song of the lioness, if you don't mind! (I kinda wanna reread too, it's been years)
hey sorry this has been sitting for so long, i didn’t have the energy to gather my thoughts over midterms so i’ve been waiting to answer, here we go!
i want MORE. more of Alanna’s actual knight training and more of what she does hanging out in the city with George and more friendship moments
N O N B I N A R Y  A L A N N A. Eleni being the mother figure who “forces her to accept she’s a girl” is out, Eleni being the mother figure who lets her know it’s okay if she doesn’t feel like a girl and she is whatever she is and there are options outside boy/girl is IN
bisexual george goodbye
also alanna’s not straight hello
also let’s get some more female characters in here yes? if alanna spends more time in the city then Rispah can be a bigger character and an actual friend to her and also we can add other minor female characters around
ok the fucking awful romances in Hand of the Goddess have to be addressed obviously
step one: get rid of the age gaps. i don’t remember how much older jon is than Alanna so i won’t go into that but i know EXACTLY how to deal with the george/alanna one
solution: george isn’t 17 (or is it 18?) when alanna gets to Corus at age 11. He can be like 13/14. But how can the king of thieves be 13/14 years old you ask? he can’t be. george is not yet the king of thieves when alanna gets there YOU’RE WELCOME TAMORA PIERCE I FIXED IT
no seriously if george isn’t king of thieves yet then we can follow his journey to becoming the king of thieves during the books and that sounds fuckin great to me. he can probably become king of thieves in time to provide Alanna with the spies in Tusaine by the time that’s necessary in In The Hand of the Goddess
step 2: every time george ignores alanna’s boundaries is cut the fuck out. rewrite their first kiss in literally any other way. the time he puts her to sleep before the ordeal is GONE
step 3: the entire part where Jon was being an asshole because he didn’t know how to deal with liking Alanna is either cut out or she gets to yell at him until he apologizes and learns his lesson. maybe while also handing his ass to him in a duel or something the important part is that i finally get satisfaction for the fact that her supposed best friend treats her like shit because he ~loves her~
hey do you remember that line where Alanna says she can’t be with Jon so he tells her to “go before he changes his mind”
yeah so
CUT THE FUCK OUT
also let’s not make Roger the feminized gay-coded villain while we’re at it. let’s just undo that
i don’t know how to change the end of The First Adventure so it’s not a white savior narrative about Alanna and Jon saving the Bazhir unless the black city just isn’t in the desert? maybe they can go to the desert and do other stuff that isn’t about being white saviors and then the black city can happen later, somewhere else
i haven’t reread Woman Who Rides Like a Man or Lioness Rampant recently so i won’t get into those but trust me i have issues with them
