District 13 AU (I should really stop calling it 13AU, it's a snowbaird happily ever after AU)

Orpheus Sage Snow

Nickname: Sejy

Third of my Snowbaird kid

Born and grew up in district 13 along with his elder sisters. When he was younger, he nearly died from a pox outbreak, which led to his father, fully joining 13 to the rebellion. Moved to the Capitol at 16.His father enrolled him into his former academy to assimilate him into the Capitol and went to school there along with his childhood friend, Micheal. There, he met his first friend, Ophelia Vickers (Coriolanus, knowing his opinionated son and not wanting him to end up like a certain someone, requested his former classmate to have her daughter befriend his son) then he met Julius "Julian" Creed. The four became fast friends.

Orpheus Sage loves wearing his mother's jewelry and loves to visit his mother's family in 12 (to which Julian would insist in coming along). Orpheus Sage also has a natural charisma and massive flirt and is genuinely physically affectionate. He is rebellious and would often not listen to anyone but his mother. His shenanigans had led to the news and sometimes kidnapped that no bodyguard ever stayed employed with him.

He will outright ignore anyone who will not say his full name. The only other nickname he will answer to is "Sejy" but it's only cuz that's what Ophelia had affectionally call him and that he notice his father flinches when he is called by that nickname and so never correct it.

In college, he studied and graduated in a chemistry majors(insisted by his father) with a deal that his father would fund and any projects he does. He then later pursue a career in music and theatre. His singing career is a hit and has led to travel everywhere and mostly away from his family's politics but helps out in ways he can whenever they badger him.

Okay I'm shamelessly wading back into my Hunger Games era to tell you all one of my FAVORITE details from the book. I'm a writer so like, the things that catch my attention in books tend to be a bit 'strange' .

Anyway my point here is that one of my personal FAVORITE small moments with HUGE implications in the book is Finnick knowing CPR while Katniss is so unfamiliar with it she actually thinks he's kissing Peeta's dead corpse at first. This is a funny little scene but dude. Okay. Katniss mentions in this scene that she's seen her mother do CPR once or twice, but that the types of patients she deals with in 12 are usually victims of starvation, mining accidents, etc. The types of ailments and death that are most common in 12 aren't the kind that chest compressions will help with, so it's pretty much an irrelevant technique in that particular district.

But what's even MORE interesting than that and the thing my brain latched on to like a squeaky toy is that district four's industry is fishing. Of course, the most obvious conclusion here is that CPR is more common due to higher drowning rates. They're the ocean district. But to go a little deeper, I would be willing to bet that not only Finnick knows CPR, but that it's probably a required part of schooling in district 4. This is basically head cannon territory but I'm basing it completely on details from the books. So here we go

We know that in each Hunger Games district, pretty much the entire culture and function is based off of whatever industry that particular district is primarily responsible for. In 12, many of the school classes focus on coal and coal production, the children are taken on yearly field trips down into the mines, etc.

So in district 4, which is also a career district, I would bet dollars to fucking donuts that swimming and water safety classes+CPR are a standard part of the curriculum. You probably aren't allowed to graduate and enter the workforce in district 4 unless you can demonstrate at least basic swimming abilities and understanding of how to save someone from drowning. I imagine it's probably a very similar program to lifeguard type training in real-life.

Just. Look up a video of newborn swim training for me, okay? The thing where they basically throw a baby in the water and let them resurface? And then imagine that every single parent in district 4 does that or at least it's a cultural norm. Baby Finnick being borderline waterboarded at birth to prepare him to survive. Just. That image makes me giggle a lot for some reason. Also water births are probably the norm in 4. That just feels correct.

There's not really a point to this post I'm just OBSESSED with Suzanne Collin's subtle world-building and how easy she makes it to fill in the blanks. Like. I don't know if any of what I've said here is cannon but it would make COMPLETE sense

Is Titus going to be appearing in your fanfiction?

for the first question, yeah he'll show up at some point. Not going to say when, but he will. Would have felt like a missed opportunity to not include him seeing as he is the one named character from D6 in the trilogy and the first named formerly fallen tribute (hell if I remember correctly he is the only former fallen tribute from a previous game that gets a name).

Also as mentioned in my earlier post I have a lot of thoughts around him, so he'll definitely going to be there.

For the second question...I'm not sure. I don't really know why my brain latches on certain concepts/characters more than others- but I will try to explain it. I think the first thing first is just how little we know about D6. Like it wasn't until the movies came out that we even learned what their industry even was. So you know I'm a bit curious what is their deal.

Fun side note looking up old fanworks for D6 it seemed that very heavily agreed headcannon back in the day was that D6 was the medicine district, just thought to mention that because I thought that was interesting.

But there are also other Districts we don't know a lot about so why D6? So I think the thing that interest me about D6 compared to the other lesser known Districts like 5, 9 and 10. Is that it seems to be something so much more bleaker about that district specifically, compared to the rest of them.

The two victors we meet in CF are really only known for their drug addiction and is treated as being shells of who they used to be. Also the first character from the District we even hear about is a kid that was so starved in the games he resorted to cannibalism. It gives the District a very hopeless and unstable vibe that we don't get from the other lesser known Districts.

Another point for why I got interested in D6 was the two victors we meet in CF. Like when it's mentioned all they did during training was painting colorful swirls on each other and then helping Peeta painting Katniss into a flower field...Idk that just got to me. Also the Female Morphling's death in the book got me sobbing when i reread it. Like bro why did that death have to go so hard 🫠

As previously mentioned they get treated as being such former shell on whoever they used to be and not fully there. But at the same they were trusted with Rebel's plans, probably knowing they couldn't do much to help but still did. Also they were some of the first Victors that joined in on the hand holding thing at the end of the interviews, so I thought that was neat and no one mentions that when discussing the character. So I will mention that.

So TLDR: The Victors of the District seemed interesting, which led to me being interested to learn more about their district in general ✌️

Minor throwaway sentence in a book on corruption I've just finished was talking about 1930s gangsters and about certain organisations in Chicago which the author stated were more ethnically diverse than the Italian mafia, and whose members were said to have included 'Irish, Welsh, Italian, and Jewish' gangsters.

Now call me sheltered but I've seen MANY Italian American gangsters immortalised in film, I've heard of the Jewish mob, and the police Irish American gangs but I have yet to see a movie about the Welsh mob. As a rule I don't go in for gangster movies but I feel there's an unfilled niche here and also I need more info.

people on tiktok well on all social media sites actually will loudly critique the fact some people (especially those who only watched the movies) “didn’t get the point of the hunger games” and then turn around and say gale is the worst person in the universe and treat him like he’s a monster, and that all these traits are innate characteristics completely isolated from the circumstances in which he lived and the people around him. like girlie i think maybe YOU didn’t get the point here either.

So I have been hyperfixating on the tributes fashion in the movie I feel like all the choices for their fashion were soo brilliant and they deserve more recognition and something I love about the fashions is that it very subtly hints at the wealth deferences between the districts and no better example of this than facet and velvreene the district 1 tributes

(now I couldn't find a good quality picture of them in the movie considering they are often just standing in the background but I found this what I like to call ' the actors having fun ' photo their actors took so that's what we are working with)

So it's fully agreed on by fans that Facet and velvreene are wearing their school uniforms with how their outfits are matching and the preppy v nick sweaters. It does look like a private school uniform not a public school uniform so it shows how district 1 is the wealthiest district and while I don't know the name of the fabrics they do look better quality and their clothes are tidy then say bobbin and woveys clothes they also are completely white so here is a little colour psychology

The color white symbolizes innocence and purity Which is important because facet and velvreene are just kids , they never showed any malice or ill well towards anyone and they tried to run away from the games , they didn't want to participate in this blood sport that they were forced into and Having to kill other children like them, they didn't want to be killers and ultimately they were killed for it. Them wearing bright white also made them stand out from the rest of the tributes and made them easy to see I always managed to spot them despite being in the background they rarely fade into the background which also hints at district 1 specialization in luxury items and how they create flashy high quality products however they also have black in their clothes and black can symbolise darkness and death. even though district 1 is the wealthiest district they are still not safe from the capitol cruelty and oppression the capitol is still willing to kidnap two of their children and treating them inhumanely and still drives internment from watching them kill and die

Their school uniform also contrasts with the academy students uniforms the academy students uniforms is bulky in silhouette and the blazers makes the students bigger than they are and their uniforms are red the colour of blood the spilling of the district children's blood and they do look like wannabe politicians ( the academy uniform honestly reminds me of heather chandler's look in heathers ) meanwhile district one's school uniforms fits them pretty well and seems more comfortable running in and it doesn't have gaudy accessories on it like the academis gold pins showing once again how even with them being more well off then other districts they still have to work hard to please the Capitol

Finna get into an argument on education Twitter bc rich ppl are complaining that they have to share the doe budget with lower performance schools

Meanwhile we are lower performance bc we have like mostly first generation immigrant children who don't speak English so they come in and they're usually leaning a whole new version of Spanish AND English, and depending on the year they're learning French too bc of their friends

Most of our kids have jobs. Not legally but they work for/ with their parents

AND they could have a learning disability! Bc charter schools don't take them and richer public schools don't care and do testing and regular private schools don't have to accommodate them, but you know who does!

Regular public school, please shut the fuck up if you're not teaching a class with 4 languages and at least 2 disabilities at once. You can't call yourself a student advocate if you're only advocating for the "good" kids from "good" families I should be allowed to fight them ok

With how silly Hunger Games names can get I am inclined to believe it is his actual name.

It is interesting though. Blight is a disease for plants, so it is fair to assume it is a nickname, because what parent would name their children after something that is negative. Like the whole industry of 7 would take a big hit if a big amount of the trees suffer from blight, so interesting someone would name their kid after that.

I have to rant. Pls bare with me or ignore me idc. TW: Miscarriage & shitty bosses (I tried to tag what I thought might need to be tagged, so sorry if I missed something.)

My boss SUCKED. She was the first person I called and told I was pregnant & how I’d be on closer watch with the OB due to my miscarriage earlier this year. She said that was totally fine and to just keep her in the loop.

Only a few days into the school year I started spotting, which is obviously scary since I experienced that before my loss. I got into the OB immediately and started being seen weekly for blood tests and ultrasounds. I tried to ask off ahead of time if I knew I had an appointment, but a few times I had to leave in the middle of the day and come back, which she was fine with.

One day I went in and had only taken the morning off. I was stuck in the office waiting for hours so I texted letting my boss know I wouldn’t be back. I brought her my doctors note which simply started I was seen at 10:45 (which is usually all the office gives you when you ask for a work note).

I was also put on restrictions so my baby and I would be safe at work. I was not allowed to lift 25 pounds or more. She came up to me in the hallway demanding I have paperwork proving that, otherwise she and the district wouldn’t recognize my restrictions and would make me work like normal. I called the office and asked for something to be sent in writing for work, and they complied, sending it to my hospital app. I screenshotted it and emailed it to my boss. I then went to her office to confirm she received it and she said “yep, that should be all I need, thanks!” Then she read the note and says “do we even have any kids that heavy?” YES??? The average 3-4 year old is at the smallest 35 pounds.

About a week goes by, then I wake up and get around for work. I go pee right before leaving and suddenly there’s a LOT more spotting. I’m panicked, I call my boss to let her know I won’t be in and I’ll be calling my OB when they open. She doesn’t answer, so I text her. She responds with “I will not be able to find a sub with 16 minute notice. We will be short handed.” Ok? I’m in crisis mode right now and you’re expecting me to feel bad that I had to contact you last minute?? THEN she sends another long ass message saying she needs a note proving I was seen, it could NOT be an email on my phone, and it had better say I wasn’t allowed to return to work that day… because she let it slide last time my note only stated the time of my appointment, but I should’ve returned to work if I was able.

I was seeing red. I was shaking I was so mad. I called my husband and told him what happened and he immediately said to quit. It was bullshit. She knows my situation. She knows I’m panicked over every little issue because I lost one before. But instead of being empathetic and understanding, she throws it in my face that the classroom will be down a teacher and scolds me for my notes not being adequate? Despite her literally saying they were fine before?

I just texted back “ok, then consider this my resignation. I don’t appreciate how I’m being talked to or how this situation has been handled.” To which she replied “ok thanks for letting me know” if she was SO worried about being short handed, I’d think she’d care a bit more that I left the position entirely! She clearly didn’t like me for whatever reason despite me doing everything she asked whenever she asked.

She also turned around and posted my job online within like an hour and had all the other staff share it. I have a feeling she told them all I’m this horrible person for quitting on the spot, but they don’t know what really happened.

I submitted my official resignation to the district before she could even text again saying “I think the district will need a written paper. An email is fine” AN EMAIL IS FINE NOW??? God I’m still seething but I’m so glad I left. Everyone else there was so kind and understanding of my situation, but my main boss wasn’t and I don’t need that extra stress right now.

The good news is, I got an ultrasound done today & my baby is still looking fine! And my now former coworkers still checked in on me and asked me to keep them updated. I hope that administrator retires the moment she can in a year or two and I can take my job back without worrying about being stabbed in the back during a stressful time.
