It's an app where, at least in the United States, you can listen to as many professionally recorded audio books as you'd like for FREE, so long as you have a library card. You don't even need to visit the library, you can just borrow the audiobooks from your phone.

I think now is a good time to remind people of The Internet Archive which has a metric shit ton of shows and movies for free and won't give your computer any viruses cause it's not a pirate website.

Or Tubi, which has a metric shit ton of stuff free with ads, and you don't even have to make an account or download the app. Same with Pluto, although Pluto is pretty slow.

Even YouTube has a lot of free stuff, and I don't just mean the official YouTube movie channel. I mean, there's a bunch of channels that upload movies you can watch without having to click a link to some shady website. YouTube also has a lot of audio book uploads too.

So don't worry about not getting brand new shows because there's so much media out there's that you haven't even consumed yet.

This book is how I learned about tongue biters and a few other mindblowing organisms so long ago, there was utterly no mention of them on the Internet at the time.

Zimmer writes with passion and adoration for nature, absolutely never framing a single creature as frightening or gruesome no matter its lifestyle, and communicates the absolutely enormous importance of parasites on the global ecosystem.

Everyone who ever asks "what's the PURPOSE" of an animal that creeps them out should have to read this entire book. I'll bet even if you're one of them you might get hooked by just the writing style. I know people who had phobias cured by this book.

I just wish there was a free audio version I could share too

I don’t think we had this kind of question before, Anon! An ask about boys being boys lol As I was writing it, I realised that the majority of them would probably watch porn on their phones, which kind of makes sense, I guess. Yay technology!

Lilia – he also caught a virus or two before lol He has a phase during which he watched a lot of porn, and it ended up being something similar to what Jade is doing, but then he kind of lost interest. He mostly watches bdsm stuff to jerk off these days… but he also loves all the fantasy/medieval-themed porn that spawned after the Game of Thrones! He mostly laughs at it though. And gets kind of nostalgic.

Silver – he doesn’t, but he did watch some porn with Lilia once. He gets unexpectedly shy when watching it… as if he’s looking at something he isn’t supposed to, despite Lilia telling him not to look away. It did turn him on, but at the same time he prefers to focus on his partner instead of looking somewhere else. He doesn’t watch it on his own because he doesn’t even think about these things.

Sebek – he doesn’t! And he gets pissed off when other first years (mostly Ace and Epel) talk about it so casually! He finds the whole thing obscene, unnecessary and brain-rotting. Ironically, despite being so horribly horny, he would have good resistance to porn. He doesn’t know these people and doesn’t care about their indecencies! Until someone tells him to imagine that it’s Malleus…

Malleus – he doesn’t have any magazines and doesn’t watch porn (he would find the idea kind of weird, he is too sophisticated for that), but he does have a favourite erotic novel that he used to read a lot. He has it somewhere back at home… but it’s okay, he doesn’t really need to have this book with him at all times – he remembers it very vividly, word to word. Unfortunately, this novel is more of an outlier – Malleus was kind of disappointed by the quality of every other smut book he got.

Rollo doesn’t watch porn, come on now. The only type of smut he experiences is the kind that his own mind plays in his head when he sleeps. And Rollo really wishes he could turn it off! But he can’t, so for now he’s just having weird wet dreams about faceless men in red cloaks judging him….

Fellow doesn’t really care about porn all that much because his life is already so full of sex, but he doesn’t necessarily have access to a lot of porn either. He used to flip through magazines with some hunks on them, but hasn’t done it in quite a while.

Gidel, however, loves his dirty magazines! I’ve said it in some other hc post: a magazine with beast-ladies in tiny bikinies is an ultimate gift for him. He steals those from shops, he takes the ones that are randomly abandoned at gas stations. Whenever they are lucky enough to stay at a motel with a tv, the first thing Gidel does is turning on the TV to see if there are porn channels available for free. He doesn’t even do anything while watching it, he’s just fascinated by smut. I guess it’s a phase… or is it?

The 2007 Flatland film by Ladd Ehlinger is free on youtube. Unfortunately Ladd Ehlinger is a virulently racist and misogynistic conservative who thinks feeding school kids is the same thing as slavery. His film is filled with almost constant flashing lights and spinning cameras that cause headaches, motion sickness, migraines, and seizures.

Here is a link to timestamps for these if you still choose to watch it.

The film ignores all of the politics from the original novel because the creator of the film agrees with the bigotry the novel condemned. You are much better off watching another visual adaption or reading the original or translated book.

Especially if you suffer from photosensitivity or motion-sickness, this film will make you want to throw up.

pro tip for disabled book lovers in the UK!

the royal national institute for blind people (RNIB) has a library service for not only blind people, but also other "print-disabled" people to get free audio or braille books. they say if you have any disability that limits or prevents you from reading standard print, you qualify for their service. you don't have to submit any proof of your disability.

you can either get downloadable audio books through an online registration, or you can have them send you audiobooks on CD or a USB stick in the mail (you will have to return them once you are done)

Language Resources 🎀

*that I currently use for studying Spanish. When I pick up studying Japanese again, I will make a list for that as well <3 I currently use a handful of resources for learning Spanish, and they've all proven very useful so far!

🩷 My Current Resources for Spanish

Busuu - hands down my favorite language learning app. So much better than Duolingo, in my opinion (especially for languages with a different alphabet/writing system). I bought the premium for a year, which will expire in Septmeber, but I'm debating renewing again because I love it so much.

LingQ - I like using this for reading in Spanish. It gives me different types of things to read about, and while I don't have premium, I do put all the words I don't know into flashcards on AnkiApp on my laptop and translate anything I don't know using SpanishDict.

SpanishDict - favorite translation/dictionary app. I know it has lessons you can use, tho I haven't tried it yet, but I really do love this app. It's super helpful when I'm making flashcards or writing random vocabulary notes.

Goodnotes - This is a general note-taking app, but I love it because it allows you to import and write on PDFs, and that's just perfect for me! I've downloaded free PDF short stories/children's stories in Spanish and made notes of words I don't know, and taken notes in the app too. Definitely my favorite notes app, ever.

Italki - I know this is a website, too, but I use the app. It lets you work with professional teachers/community tutors in your target language. You can have structured lessons or just use it for conversation practice. I did a trial lesson not too long ago and have an upcoming lesson booked out in about 5 days. You pay per lesson, so there is no subscription, and there are so many languages and teachers/tutors to choose from. I did a lot of research before choosing a teacher, and I'm very happy with my decision so far. Definitely useful if there's not native speakers near you or you're like me and not confident talking to people you know in your target language/their native language.

Quizlet/AnkiApp - I use AnkiApp more then quizlet, and the Anki I'm referring to is NOT the same way everyone else uses, but it's the flashcard app of preference at the moment. I tried the AnkiDroid app and hated it. But yeah, AnkiApp is useful for flashcards and I really like it. I have it on my Chromebook and my Ipad.

Netflix - I love watching shows in Spanish on Netflix so much. I am currently watching La Reina del Sur on it (used to watch that sporadically in the past at a friend's house) and plan on watching some other shows, including Elite.

Spotify - I enjoy listening to Spanish music and podcasts right now. The music is more of an entertaining/enjoyable fork of audio input, and the podcasts help me get a feel for speaking and pronunciation and I choose podcasts that speak on topics of interest tk help with vocabulary in those areas I'd like to be able to speak about.

Textbooks - I have 2 PDF textbooks, Gramatica de Uso del Español: A1-B2 and Gramatica de Uso del Español: B1-B2. I've heard these are great for learning Spanish (and they're both only written in Spanish, like there's no English in them) and plan on using them once I figure out how to take good and useful textbook notes! I definitely need to improve on my grammar.

Those are all my current Spanish resources! I'd definitely say my current level is like a high A1 right now, nearing A2, but I have just a little bit of work to do before I get there. These resources are definitely gonna help, tho!
