Decorative Sunday
A few months ago we shared plates from the Industrial and Applied Arts publication L’Art Pour Tous. That magazine has two direct connections to the subject of today’s post, the influential Dictionnaire Raisonné de L’architecture Française. The magazine’s director, Claude Sauvegeot, was a student of the Dictionaire’s author, architect and medievalist Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, and was published by A. Morel, who took up editorship of the Dictionnaire after the death of the original publisher, Balthazar Bance.
Tumblr media
The ten volumes that comprise the Viollet-le-Duc’s Dictionnaire were published in Paris from 1854 through 1868, with Bance publishing the first six volumes. The Dictionary’s entries are illustrated by hundreds of wood engravings. Bance’s son Albert, still a minor at the time of his father’s death, was slated to succeeded him at the helm of the multi-generational Bance publishing business. However, Balthazar’s leadership of the Bance firm had been been marred by financial hardships, and a portion of Bance’s commercial contracts were actioned off, including the rights to the Dictionnaire.
Those publishing rights were snapped up by August-Jean Morel. Morel went on to publish the last four volumes, as well as establish an important relationship with Viollet-le-Duc. Founded by Morel in the late 1840′s, Veuve A. Morel et Cie. and its associated bookshop specialized in finely produced books on art, architecture, and design. The firm remained operational for decades after Morel’s death in 1869, under the management of Morel’s widow and with active involvement from Viollet-le-Duc himself.

Jouw DIY Held: De Onmisbare Principes

These are some facts and curiosities about Karl Brandt, the head of the Aktion T4:
He was born on 8th of January, 1904 in Alsace.
He began his studies in 1924, at the University of Jena, and in 1928, at the age of 24, he became a doctor.
A young doctor when he joined the Nazi party in 1932, he placed his hopes in the party for the recovery of the Alsace region, which in the meantime had returned under French rule (in 1919). A very important role in the formation of his thought was played by an Alsatian like him, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, whose work as a missionary in Africa he however could not join for political and military reasons.
In 1934, at the age of just 29, he became the Führer's personal doctor . The conflict between the two was always quite heated. In fact, while Hitler's official doctor, Morell, was considered a charlatan, Karl Brandt was the scientific figure and traditional doctor of the Reich.
He was the man chosen by Hitler as the initiator of the T4 Program (the killing of disabled Germans) and as his supreme medical authority.
With these authorities, he was involved in roles of maximum responsibility in the sadly famous "scientific" experiments on human beings, including the one in which he himself asked the ReichsFührer, Heinrich Himmler, for authorization to carry out inoculations of the epidemic hepatitis virus in human beings.
He and Albert Speer were not only close friends, but also acted to save each other's lives. In 1944, Brandt used his enormous powers as General Commissioner of Medical Services and his friends to save the already ill Speer from Himmler's assassination attempt. Subsequently, on April 16, 1945, Brandt was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death, as he was accused of high treason against the Führer. But on May 2 he was released by order of Karl Dönitz. In fact, upon hearing the news of his friend and colleague's arrest, Speer had the urgency to mobilize various people to save his life.
Brandt entered into what many think of as an adopted son relationship with the Führer himself.
François Bayle, a French psychologist who interviewed him repeatedly at the time of the Nuremberg trials, described him thus:
«Rich, vigorous, but undisciplined, pugnacious and childish personality made vulnerable by his ambition and pride. Possessed of a vivid intelligence, but little logical clarity and much imagination, which can easily be influenced and led astray. His character could also be influenced, just as easily."
He was tried from 9 December 1946 to 19 August 1947 with twenty-two other doctors at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice
Karl Brandt was found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and membership of an organization declared criminal by the International Military Tribunal and sentenced to death by hanging.

Family poisoned after using AI-generated foraging book bought online
A family was hospitalized after consuming poisonous mushrooms, which they mistakenly identified using an AI-generated foraging book purchased from a major online retailer. The incident, originally shared by the affected family on Reddit, has since gained widespread attention after a creator made a video discussing the story. The book in question, titled “Mushrooms UK: A Guide to Harvesting Safe and Edible Mushrooms,” was a birthday gift meant to help the family safely forage for edible mushrooms. However, the book’s inaccurate information led to a harrowing experience when the family unknowingly picked and ate toxic mushrooms, resulting in severe illness and a trip to the hospital. Upon closer inspection, the family discovered that the book was filled with AI-generated images and contained strange, irrelevant text, such as, “In conclusion, morels are delicious mushrooms which can be consumed from August to the end of Summer. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.” These inconsistencies raised serious concerns about the legitimacy of the book.
[...]
As AI continues to play a larger role in content creation, the need for tighter regulation and scrutiny of AI-generated materials is more pressing than ever. The case of the family serves as an important reminder for consumers to be vigilant when purchasing products online, especially those that require precise, reliable information, like foraging guides. It’s important to thoroughly research both the product and the seller to ensure they are legitimate and won’t pose a danger to you or your family.

Decorative Sunday
In 1823, an aspring young lawyer named Jules Labarte (1797-1880) married Joséphine Debruge-Duménil*, the only daughter of the wealthy art collector Louis-Fidel Debruge-Duménil (1788-1838). He was enthralled by his father-in-laws collection, one of the first major private collections of Medieval and Renaissance Art in France, and by 1835 he had abandoned the law to dedicate himself to the study of art history. A few years later, Debruge-Duménil passed away unexpectedly, and Labarte was charged with identifying and cataloging his collection of over fifteen thousand artifacts, a task he took on with great meticulousness.
The resulting catalog was published in 1847 by La Librarie Archeonologique de Victor Didron with a 400 page introduction. This well-researched introduction became a highly sought after text, and Didron pressed Labarte for years to produce a second edition. Labarte refused for years, but allowed for a English translation, published in 1855 by J. Murray of London as Handbook of the Arts of the Middle Ages and Renaissance as Applied to the Decoration of Furniture, Arms, Jewels, Etc.
The English edition only increased the appetite for a revised French edition, to which Labarte finally agreed. Between 1864 and 1866, Histoire des arts industriels au Moyen Âge et à l'époque de la Renaissance was published in Paris by A. Morel et Cie. in four volumes, with two additional volumes of plates. Printing was done by Henri Plon, an ancestor of 16th century Danish typographer Jehan Plon. The plates are primarily chromolithographs produced by Lemercier, the largest lithography firm in Paris at the time. Keep your eyes peeled for a follow up post where we will share images from the second album and discuss Rose-Joseph Lemercier (1803-1887).
The above images are all sourced from the first album of plates. Critics praised the book’s illustration for its rich colors and “photo-like accuracy.” You might look at the last image above (of the statue St. Anne and her Children by German artist Hans Greiff) and question that characterization based on the somewhat bizarre faces, but lo and behold, the faces on the actual statue are a bit strange! See for yourself:

*Special shout out to Institute National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) for providing me with the first name of Labarte’s wife Josephine, who is most commonly (and annoyingly) referred to in the literature as “daughter of Louis-Fidel Debruge-Duménil” or “wife of Labarte.”
