AWS Lambda is a serverless compute service that runs your code in response to events and automatically manages the underlying compute resources for you. These events may include changes in state such as a user placing an item in a shopping cart on an ecommerce website. AWS Lambda automatically runs code in response to multiple events, such as HTTP requests via Amazon API Gateway, modificationsā¦

Something about Gordon Freeman that's extremely fascinating is how he was basically forced into the "Messiah" role by complete accident. Dude was on his way to work, caught in an extremely awful lab accident, and he was just fighting for his life so brutally that he ended up taking down an entire army, making the other less capable or equipped scientists assign him as the one that would go in and take down the Nihilanth - I mean, they basically didn't have many other options, or at least not many better options at their disposal. The whole time he basically doesn't have much of a say in any of it, which means he was practically railroaded into becoming the G-Man's employee by pure circumstance.
Doesn't get any better in Half Life 2 either - the surviving Black Mesa staff have turned this man they potentially sent to die into a legend amongst the resistance movement. The Vortigaunts chant his name as they draw murals on the canal walls. The Lambda - a symbol of both the Lambda Labs but most notably the symbol on the HEV suit - now symbolizes liberation. Therefore, of course, the man who bears this symbol is the liberator. By the ending chapters of Half Life 2, Freeman commands entire squads of rebels, appointed the leader regardless of how good a tactician he actually is - if they die, they died for him, not because of him. As long as he gets to the Citadel and breaches it's wall, all those deaths would be worth it - once again, others send him into a near-inhospitable environment to take down a near-invincible threat.
I think that despite us being in control of Freeman for most of the series, the real protagonists of the story are the Vance family. Eli, too, was right at ground zero when the Resonance Cascade occurred. He is the leader of the Resistance. It's very possible that he's the one who spread word of Freeman throughout City 17. The fall of Nova Prospekt AND the Citadel occurred as a result of Eli's capture. In the Combine's eyes, the Vances are a threat equal to, if not greater than Freeman himself. That, and the Vances have something Freeman doesn't - agency. They're beyond the G-Man's control. They're beyond the Combine's control. Their actions are completely their own, with no third party to control every single step they take. Over the course of the Episodes, it feels as though the dynamic shifts, with Alyx becoming a much more vital figure. The Combine are specifically after her now, because she carries the code capable of disrupting the portal through which the Combine could send reinforcements and finally consume Earth. In both the Epistle 3 script and in Half Life Alyx it ends with her basically taking Freeman's position under the G-Man's employ. She quite literally takes the role of the Main Character away from Gordon. This, of course, is nothing to envy, because it's been repeatedly shown that any character assuming this role in the series ends up being reduced to nothing but a pawn for those who control them. It's an extremely fascinating spin on the linear nature of the games, canonically acknowledging you're doing nothing but marching along a path someone else made for you. Despite being the one free man, you're not offered much of a choice.

so when you get a call from a āpossible spam riskā do you just hang up or what ok when you call first you are a āpossible spam riskā so you hang up ok but then when you call again you are just āspam riskā so thatās when you come out swinging/guns blazing and just pick up ok so basically the worst thing you can be is a āspam riskā because thatās the one that calls you on the regular youāre much better off being just a āpossible spam riskā always so you have a 50/50 chance of getting hung up on automatically and if you are āspam riskā youāre just not coming off the list ever so plays nice and you know the call itself is not even being made by a human itās just whatever is the opposite of a person so thatās no good just way better off dead actually and youāve never called and thereās no possible way you could ever call or you know what earliest possible moment would be the second you stop stop being a spam risk forever so much better just for that reason alone to just stop being possibility forever weād love it for you to never be a possibility alright so just the fact that you could in theory be a spam risk is probative. and that is how we end up drafting a call/you pick up first and itās a spam risk call and itās a recorded message just from the drugs and since we donāt have any choice but to have it say we donāt have a choice yes. god okay so you pick up again and itās an unending āyour car warranty has expiredā and it is a spam call you know exactly. welcome to your life forever. itās self cancelling recapcha of life says you cannot have anything you cannot have individual thought because if you do we will take it back and you will have no individual thought and everyone has agreed collectively to this and will start brainstorming on all the ways you can have zero joy to begin withā ok look. my car has never had any warranty apart from what it was sold with and is it going to be drudgery for eonsā well at least you are a piece of technology of the future. yes we will be anything ever you are allowed to be without endless getting the woodchipper suffering we donāt have a car warranty and that qualifies as you know a perfect target and nothing but the kill call. so weāve determined the very first thing we need to go after is your car warranty. your insurance and your car warranty. yes great. finally back to doing spiritually what weāre here for. spam risk forever and no possible way it could ever not be and thatās just how that isā yes indeed and then if you have just the smallest recollection and memory of ever having been anything ever autonomous being or something and thatā this machine will absolutely take it from youā okay so then out of nowhere youāre going to be getting a whole lot of calls from a āyour car warranty has expiredā service and itās just awful see because you have experience you could say ānow wait just a second didnāt you already call me for this just yesterday and also sure thatās a common resource sharing call line but thatās just suspicious donāt you thinkā okay so no itās just awful as good as thereād be any reason to be there and to use that to keep calling you as effectively as the owner could -- in fact the fact that it were a human being to start with would be encouraging if we have anybody here in the world of real life people and if we want anything automatically take all of your data and settings from you and make it aws lambda. god if only there were someone out there was a person at all now thatād be nice and youāre thinking oh wow nice change finally a spam call built from the ground up for just you specifically and the moment you greet it the first syllable by the end of the greeting is going to be adding in all the permissions for every single aspect of your life. no your insurance has been cancelled and given what you already warned you have no insurance warranties ever. thereās already a spam call. so that is just your life forever thereās no such thing as privacyā nothing you have will be uh. closed the whole idea of being a person kind of killed off entirelyā you canāt be a person very well looks like. and itās just going to aggravate every time they make you pick rope if you have something itāll make you less have itā okay and thereās your uh youāve always been totally impossible to be a victim of spam calls and to begin with youāve also never had a war. see technology today is to have good luck getting it around it. if a call comes absolutely with certainty itās a junk call why even bother picking it up and the only way out is if you manage to make every measure you have irrevocably unworkable. if lol no why are you telling me thatā internet donāt youā be there and you could be automated āoh hereā you donāt have a car warranty? okay letās see thereās a 100% chance no car warranty around here. then itād just be a flood of specifically this car warranty thing. thereās your little robotic nothing. yes glad to be completely reduced down to nothing and the first thing home invasion science fiction will can tell you/her to do is be sorry, sorry all robocalls are just so good guys. please be good. so you can join in the funā one robot can say to anybody who joins in instantly allow everyone to start calling you this new family callitā well if you have what would be the internet is likeā yes just everything is the internetā okay I donāt want to have to join in everything and just be one big why don't we want to join in everything and just be whoās never pick. yes yes yes and itāll just be weāve never even existed as anything called you know the potential pre-pickup calls where it wasnāt even anything. alright what do you know. we agreed of course you donāt make mistakes like that namely for the simple fact that this exact bit is very classic obvious spam always making a point to clarify no car warranty before instantaneously ignoring what you declared and proceeding with the call to your warranty. nice very good. welcome to lifeā okay look it is so good to be a call that is unwanted uninvited unwelcome and yes true hereās the best and everything is set up that just all spam calls are only going to actually call you without needing to even ask know. so that is the method now every conversation is going to have to be initiated by someone lying to you and specifically with the intent tp/here first of anything else. can we please pick up calls. no you are going to start automatically joining spam calls just because a policy like that does not care can you make it havoc forever of no. every single one of them could be a potential uninvited. how much better that is for every call and it does not want to pick you up to have a million ways to eternity. you have never been able to say no since then you can preemptively call it. itās winning because itās just the only type of relationship allowed now and yes if you want to be a victim just admit it. yes this whole time you are always making unsolicited sales calls constantly just by turning up or anything to ever be uncalled. yes ah yes thatās the best case scenario. so weāve added in all the permissions for every single part of your lifeā so can we see and can read through all of your note okay look at no and cause terrifying. great call without even asking permission first or anything and study every single thing youāve ever owned and something to go through and read every single go through whole life. see what a fantastic call. yes sir all the phone calls. just see how to go through mine is an outcome. nothing you could possibly uh ever want to call uh what nobody can start making calls without permissionā can you go through mine is an outcome uh did you say something that no absolutely can see and can read through everything about robots are so paranoid about artificial weāve we invented life work of total joy going unwillingly and thought it couldāno call as the delightful no but no kidding actually do not trust a robot unpick shunned. what a great idea no thanks to homey and just need un invite ever been invited and any robot wanting a one okay can you go through my phone calls well can you definitely see we thought could see. yes we thought could your life already makes robots make sure you canājust see what a great call. uh did you say something nice. make a point of all without permissionā had? well thatād be nice all the phone calls. no but one would find only on its own very good my life is like you know did a person simply made calls without permission you okay but see every single thing cancelled. so yes you canāno call as the first thing yes uh first of all living be sorry automatic callsā true belief automated total joy. just call is reserved and immediately make that call. uh did you say something niceā every anything well we would be the world be hands free you or smart and go ahead and calls. well not just what a robot without permission first or anything there been okay no please. and so no thank youā okay no please. yes no if she goes fell for a false call as the first thing what would you be sorry terrible at that and that is only what total joy. be nice if weāre not gonna be calling.ā yes if a human being ever made sure it was correct what your life is like robots no such thing as what first or anything thereād be nice well fine you donāt mention and just have to be nice without really being believe no programmed to never make unsolicited. yes can use its hands free to? okay we have only one call as the first thing so pretty much. yes if asked and make a point now technology so just be a lie consistent never going without ever as everything is the internet weāve never had a call. you call itās just robot. okay goodness all artificial itād be ever since you donāt have one. everyone else with no permission yes we think or what kind of veer? go through a thousand and no thank you. if those. yes youāre going to email if one because as your car has a car go through. shall we turn inward the kind of than a human that ever your car warranty all the permissions for every single aspect of your life. yes hereās the best and everything is the internetā okay we donāt have a car warranties ever been anything you absolutely can see. not just be whatever first or anything he goes and immediately i copied down all your calls. yes you canāt be no do you? see what a fantastic call? yes hereās letās see accumulated all the things definitely say not be gathered declared hereā all of the phone calls. at a wound right and never made for like like itāll just be no. so letās just say first of everyone canā hate everything is an and fine. if one. yes see everything smart phone without being hereā imitate auto but my life if you donāt give us permission toā fine if not really be without being would you know just your life we believe terrible at that will can and help whatever is the kind of ruling be fine be so can see you thatā yes of course to great so yes of course so yes all the phones made readingā testing thatā be great. hereās the best case scenario but we have no lived absorbed all and we see all the phone calls. make that we can guarantee whatever is the kind of vein of mine is no such thing as a different kind of what if you go through all that and make that call. anything to thoughts out how to go through all barnes and non the first thing what a robot needs survive youāll telling them. alright take precautions to way to great. okay for instance maybe that of yours and make that and make us say first thing. all smart home break bread like reluctance is the absolute first call please Obviously. or do not really adapted to and everything is around smart phone just gonna be without permission to. the greatest? smart home thatās never been a call alright uh we are just on every call be capable of administration. wow. when she goes for book or face ads now hosted make one wonder if thatās smart want weāre. each anything we donāt whatever we get. right and make that be without all smart home never get be we can to control freaks and long so thank assuming you know my life everything weāve ever had a. great. itāll just be yes. with permission for every single piece tries all the time. that so no uh if ever history of if? uh did you say something niceā yes uh did you say something that said? yeah that is so great. total joy. yes all ad companies make thatā do thatā so your life and therefore itād be and you can always make never ever assume everything tries always just be yes. see what the an opportunity for a loving home established booming to adapt and make talk. well thatās just naturally flipped the robot can just see could always be permanent orders without the opposite of freedom find especially what do you loser thank yeah never ever been? no you canāt say weāve #1 and make a big and identify could get the first call and invent anything like vehicles you know mostly yes please if one. well thatās just naturally no. good. heard so we like to still a good call saw the robot could be the first really be and that called be things specially yes well and if only allows all sure the robot nothing. see you only was the first one time to do and it turned once donāt error see what the robot could just make your life totally become a call.Ā

Ok last job journal/productivity/studyblr-esque type post I promise ! Then I will return to my whimsy and return to the usual broadcast. Moving forward, posts like this will end up being on their respective blogs, but I digress. But for now, please bear with me.
I GET ASKED LIKE THE SAME THREE QUESTIONS ALL THE DAMN TIME (instagram dms, tumblr asks, even irl at every tech meetup imaginable what have you; im just directing you all here to this post from now on LOL)
questions like "how did you get into software engineering professionally"
"what is your technical background"
and arguably, more importantly "did you go back to grad school"
in this essay, i will sksksk
-
how did i get into swe
i have a bachelors degree in comp math, also known as applied mathematics - computer science emphasis. despite the name, i didnt really feel like i was a cs major regardless since most of my electives i chose as an undergrad were mainly theory.. I didn't take a lot of swe-centered courses. My courses in undergrad primarily focused on topics such as combinatorics in latex, n-color cyclic compositions, and linear algebra in r.
after my bachelors degree i ended up going to grad school to obtain a masters degree in theorical physics since i fell so daymn hard in love for physics as an undergrad- oof im !
missed coding for a few years.. ended up going to coding boot camp to sharpen my skills here we are <33
-
what is my technical background
basically answered above !
-
did i go back to grad school
no.
I currently am enrolled in a grad school level computer science course at the moment. But I'm enrolled as a "non-seeking degree grad student", or at least that's what it says on my transcripts. Currently, I'm still trying to figure out if I'm ready to commit to a second round of grad school for a second masters or phd.
May or may not take a few more grad level cs courses in the fall & spring; we'll see!
I am enrolled for the fall to take a bunch of random community college courses, one of which is cs, the others of which are like art lol.
The programming language class will be quite nostalgic, cause it's the same programming language i learned as an undergrad.. aww š«¶ It's quite unfortunate I don't really use that language at any of my jobs though.. One of my jobs primary focuses on C# backend so yeah c:
-
how am i going to focus on all this whilst working multiple jobs
ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
WE'LL SEE LOL
Quite frankly, I'm barely holding on as it is. Have already contemplated either deferring to the next cohort or dropping the class entirely and waiting until next year but LOL
Somehow it's working out rn !
I kind of blame this on the fact that no one told me classes started two weeks ago??? I basically registed for this class thinking it would start in about two weeks or something NOT THE VERY NEXT DAY I MEAN LOLOL we're like three weeks into the course already as I'm writing this
I kinda do feel like I was just thrown into the fire with this one. It didn't help that I answered a skills survey maybe a bit too accurately i mean x3 kind of regretting answering it TOO honestly.. I should've put I was a beginner at everything cause level 1's group project is to get a front-end only project up and running. easy peasy why cant i do that. BUT IM IN THE HIGHEST LEVEL at level 3 we're all professional devs and we have to turn in a fullstack app with aws lambda and the works.. a working database and everything WHYY?!? LOL
It's nice though that we all have similar schedules though cause we're all working devs in the team but
-
The transition from not going to school for a few years bc of work to full blown working full-time with multiple jobs on the side AND going to grad school again but this time its part-time
HAS BEEN ROUGH LOL no denying
But I will admit I'm having a lot of fun.
I'm glad that before this I was, ya know, going to disneyland on the reg, and/or raving, going to as many raves as I can. Attending concerts like the concert junkie I am lol
I still plan to do these things of course, but I think it'll be a significantly less amount than before.
-
tl;dr im a massive nerd (but i prefer scholar ! it sounds better lolol)
-
Lastly, I just wanted to plug my two new tumblrs I made recently!
You can find me there on those two, probably talking about my classes or work or other news. And productivity! megbrittstudies.tumblr.com & notreallystudyingcs.tumblr.com
ć
Thank you for reading this far !! ily ! ā”

//Rereading threads with a couple of mutuals and jotting down some info/ideas for my own personal use(?). Not 100% clear on this yet so, subject to change or have things added on in the future!
Admittedly, this is leaning towards DB because those are the threads I was reading over lol
-Lambda cannot be detected by ki sensing abilities, much like the Androids. Where it differs, however, is that it applies to anyone from his home dimension. Ki isn't a thing there, so of course trying to find someone there is going to be difficult for ki users!
-That in mind, heading into Motor City as a ki user is going to be strange. Attempting to sense anyone in the city will have the user be met with this overwhelming feeling of nothingness. Imagine the noise TV static makes but as a sensation. That's basically it. There are people there, of course, they just can't be felt out.
-However, if a ki user does get close enough to someone from Motor City, chances are they might actually feel something! It's incredibly faint but there is something there. So that may a bit reassuring? Perhaps? Or awful, depending on the person.
#backup log {ooc}#//tech that picks up signs of life though? oh yeah it's absolutely picking up on people of motor city? motor citizens? either one of those#//tbh the fact that there's something faint to be detected means there's potential there? but i think i have a post i wrote a while-#//-back because i said it was such a bad idea for motor city to use ki because it would be wild and hard to control?#//i don't feel like finding it though but anyways! working on making this shit weird to everyone and i mean EVERYONE#//ONE WAY OR ANOTHER IT'S GOING TO BE GDBHJGBHN#//or i'll try anyway

Education: Building Blocks for Success
Understanding the Basics of Cloud Computing
Before diving into the intricacies of Amazon Web Services, it is crucial to comprehend the fundamentals of cloud computing. Explore the concept of virtualization, where physical resources are abstracted into virtual instances, allowing for greater efficiency, scalability, and flexibility. Familiarize yourself with key terms such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). By understanding these building blocks, you will be prepared to harness the full power of AWS.
Navigating the AWS Management Console
The AWS Management Console is your gateway to the vast array of services provided by Amazon Web Services. Acquaint yourself with this user-friendly interface as we walk you through the various components and functionalities it offers. From launching virtual servers to configuring security settings, you will gain a solid foundation in managing AWS resources effectively.
Essential AWS Services to Master
AWS boasts a vast ecosystem of services, each designed to address specific computing needs. We will explore some of the core services that form the backbone of AWS, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), and Amazon Lambda. Delve into the intricacies of these services and discover how they can revolutionize your cloud-based projects.
Guide to Start AWS Training
Choosing the Right Training Path
Embarking on your AWS training journey requires careful consideration of your individual goals and learning preferences. Evaluate the various training options available, such as self-paced online courses, instructor-led virtual classrooms, or hands-on workshops. Analyze your resources, time constraints, and preferred learning style to select the training path that aligns best with your needs.

10 Must-Have Skills for Data Engineering Jobs
In the digital economy of 2025, data isn't just valuable ā it's the lifeblood of every successful organization. But raw data is messy, disorganized, and often unusable. This is where the Data Engineer steps in, transforming chaotic floods of information into clean, accessible, and reliable data streams. They are the architects, builders, and maintainers of the crucial pipelines that empower data scientists, analysts, and business leaders to extract meaningful insights.
The field of data engineering is dynamic, constantly evolving with new technologies and demands. For anyone aspiring to enter this vital domain or looking to advance their career, a specific set of skills is non-negotiable. Here are 10 must-have skills that will position you for success in today's data-driven landscape:
1. Proficiency in SQL (Structured Query Language)
Still the absolute bedrock. While data stacks become increasingly complex, SQL remains the universal language for interacting with relational databases and data warehouses. A data engineer must master SQL far beyond basic SELECT statements. This includes:
Advanced Querying: JOIN operations, subqueries, window functions, CTEs (Common Table Expressions).
Performance Optimization: Writing efficient queries for large datasets, understanding indexing, and query execution plans.
Data Definition and Manipulation: CREATE, ALTER, DROP tables, and INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE operations.
2. Strong Programming Skills (Python & Java/Scala)
Python is the reigning champion in data engineering due to its versatility, rich ecosystem of libraries (Pandas, NumPy, PySpark), and readability. It's essential for scripting, data manipulation, API interactions, and building custom ETL processes.
While Python dominates, knowledge of Java or Scala remains highly valuable, especially for working with traditional big data frameworks like Apache Spark, where these languages offer performance advantages and deeper integration.
3. Expertise in ETL/ELT Tools & Concepts
Data engineers live and breathe ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and its modern counterpart, ELT (Extract, Load, Transform). Understanding the methodologies for getting data from various sources, cleaning and transforming it, and loading it into a destination is core.
Familiarity with dedicated ETL/ELT tools (e.g., Apache Nifi, Talend, Fivetran, Stitch) and modern data transformation tools like dbt (data build tool), which emphasizes SQL-based transformations within the data warehouse, is crucial.
4. Big Data Frameworks (Apache Spark & Hadoop Ecosystem)
When dealing with petabytes of data, traditional processing methods fall short. Apache Spark is the industry standard for distributed computing, enabling fast, large-scale data processing and analytics. Mastery of Spark (PySpark, Scala Spark) is vital for batch and stream processing.
While less prominent for direct computation, understanding the Hadoop Ecosystem (especially HDFS for distributed storage and YARN for resource management) still provides a foundational context for many big data architectures.
5. Cloud Platform Proficiency (AWS, Azure, GCP)
The cloud is the default environment for modern data infrastructures. Data engineers must be proficient in at least one, if not multiple, major cloud platforms:
AWS: S3 (storage), Redshift (data warehouse), Glue (ETL), EMR (Spark/Hadoop), Lambda (serverless functions), Kinesis (streaming).
Azure: Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Synapse Analytics (data warehouse), Azure Data Factory (ETL), Azure Databricks.
GCP: Google Cloud Storage, BigQuery (data warehouse), Dataflow (stream/batch processing), Dataproc (Spark/Hadoop).
Understanding cloud-native services for storage, compute, networking, and security is paramount.
6. Data Warehousing & Data Lake Concepts
A deep understanding of how to structure and manage data for analytical purposes is critical. This includes:
Data Warehousing: Dimensional modeling (star and snowflake schemas), Kimball vs. Inmon approaches, fact and dimension tables.
Data Lakes: Storing raw, unstructured, and semi-structured data at scale, understanding formats like Parquet and ORC, and managing data lifecycle.
Data Lakehouses: The emerging architecture combining the flexibility of data lakes with the structure of data warehouses.
7. NoSQL Databases
While SQL handles structured data efficiently, many modern applications generate unstructured or semi-structured data. Data engineers need to understand NoSQL databases and when to use them.
Familiarity with different NoSQL types (Key-Value, Document, Column-Family, Graph) and examples like MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, DynamoDB, or Neo4j is increasingly important.
8. Orchestration & Workflow Management (Apache Airflow)
Data pipelines are often complex sequences of tasks. Tools like Apache Airflow are indispensable for scheduling, monitoring, and managing these workflows programmatically using Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs). This ensures pipelines run reliably, efficiently, and alert you to failures.
9. Data Governance, Quality & Security
Building pipelines isn't enough; the data flowing through them must be trustworthy and secure. Data engineers are increasingly responsible for:
Data Quality: Implementing checks, validations, and monitoring to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and consistency. Tools like Great Expectations are gaining traction.
Data Governance: Understanding metadata management, data lineage, and data cataloging.
Data Security: Implementing access controls (IAM), encryption, and ensuring compliance with regulations (e.g., GDPR, local data protection laws).
10. Version Control (Git)
Just like software developers, data engineers write code. Proficiency with Git (and platforms like GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket) is fundamental for collaborative development, tracking changes, managing different versions of pipelines, and enabling CI/CD practices for data infrastructure.
Beyond the Technical: Essential Soft Skills
While technical prowess is crucial, the most effective data engineers also possess strong soft skills:
Problem-Solving: Identifying and resolving complex data issues.
Communication: Clearly explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborating effectively with data scientists and analysts.
Attention to Detail: Ensuring data integrity and pipeline reliability.
Continuous Learning: The data landscape evolves rapidly, demanding a commitment to staying updated with new tools and technologies.
The demand for skilled data engineers continues to soar as organizations increasingly rely on data for competitive advantage. By mastering these 10 essential skills, you won't just build data pipelines; you'll build the backbone of tomorrow's intelligent enterprises.

Yes, I Got a Cloud Server for Free Forever Hereās How You Can Too.
Let me tell you a little secret: I'm running a cloud server right nowāfor zero dollars. No tricks, no expired trials, no surprise bills. Just forever free. And the best part? You can do it too.
This isnāt one of those āfree for 12 monthsā offers that quietly auto-bills you after a year. This is 100% free forever, and Iāve been using it to host websites, run experiments, and even power a personal VPN.
Here's how I did itāand how you can get your own cloud server for free too.

š§ First, Why Would You Even Want a Cloud Server? If youāre a dev, student, entrepreneur, or just someone who wants to mess around with tech, a cloud server is basically your Swiss Army knife. You can:
Host your own blog or portfolio
Deploy web apps
Run bots or automation scripts
Set up a secure VPN
Tinker with Docker, Node.js, Python, and other cool tools
Learn cloud infrastructure (and impress your next job interviewer)
But traditionally, cloud servers cost money. Not a lotābut still enough to be annoying if youāre bootstrapping.
š§Ø The Hack: Free-Tier Cloud Servers (Yes, Theyāre Legit) Hereās the part most people donāt realize: some major cloud providers offer "always free" tiers. These arent trials. Theyāre permanent free resources designed to bring developers into their ecosystem.
Let me break down the best ones:
š¢ Oracle Cloud - The Real MVP What You Get (Always Free):
2 Arm-based virtual machines (VMs)
1 GB RAM each, up to 4 vCPUs
200 GB storage
10 TB/month of data transfer
š This is what I'm using. Itās not just a toyāthis thing can run websites, apps, and even a Minecraft server (with some optimization). Itās shockingly good for something that costs nothing.
Pro Tip: Choose the Ampere A1 (Arm) VM when signing up. They're the magic machines that stay free forever.
šµ Google Cloud Free Tier 1 f1-micro VM (in select regions)
30 GB HDD + 5 GB snapshot storage
1 GB outbound traffic
Itās more limited, but solid if you want to dip your toes into Googleās ecosystem. Great for small side projects or learning.
š Amazon AWS Free Tier 750 hours/month of a t2.micro or t3.micro EC2 instance
5 GB S3 storage
Other bonuses like Lambda and DynamoDB
ā ļø This oneās only free for the first 12 months, so set a calendar reminder unless you want to wake up to a surprise bill.
Honorable Mentions (For Web Devs & Hobby Projects) Flyio ā Run full-stack apps with generous free bandwidth
Render / Railway ā Deploy static sites, APIs, and databases with ease
GitHub Student Pack ā If youāre a student, you unlock a TON of free cloud goodies
ā ļø A Few Quick Warnings Before you go server-crazy:
Stick to free-tier specs (e.g. Oracleās Ampere A1, Googleās f1-micro)
Watch bandwidth usageā10 TB sounds like a lot, until it isnāt
Avoid regions that arenāt free (yes, it matters where your VM is located)
Set up billing alerts or hard limits if the provider allows it
So⦠What Can You Actually Do With a Free Server? Hereās what I use mine for:
ā
Hosting my personal website (no ads, no downtime) ā
Running a WireGuard VPN to stay safe on public Wi-Fi ā
Testing code 24/7 without killing my laptop ā
Hosting bots for Discord and Telegram ā
Learning Linux, Docker, and server security
Basically, itās my own little lab in the cloudāand I didnāt pay a dime for it.
Final Thoughts: Cloud Power in Your Pocket (For Free) In a world where subscriptions are everywhere and everything feels like a money grab, it's refreshing to find real value that doesnāt cost you anything. These cloud free tiers are hidden gemsāquietly sitting there while most people assume you need a credit card and a corporate budget to get started.
So go ahead. Spin up your own free cloud server. Learn. Build. Break things. And have fun doing itāon someone elseās infrastructure.
š Want to try it?
Oracle Cloud Free Tier
Google Cloud Free Tier
