The first five MRU universes
So again, gonna be a while before these actually happen because I want to actually write out the process of Piper stealing the HMG research, some of the preparations for Launch Day, and the actual First Activation, and I'm waiting until after I finish the Wonder Arc to write those so I don't end up abandoning it half-finished for months. But I at least wanted to list them out.
Again, universe 1 is basically the Test Universe, while 2-5 are in one batch that gets activated all at once.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Anchor: Link
Supervisor: Trinity
MRUs: 0 and 1
To justify having references to every game (because why wouldn’t it) Time Portals appeared basically everywhere at the same time the Memes did. Also, the Internet Graveyard got merged with the Wild-Era Sacred Realm (which was obviously never visited and is at the current End of the timeline so it doesn’t mess anything up and I can do whatever I want with its aesthetic). Yes, whoever did the setup had to get every Korok seed so the Key Items menu couldn’t canonically update and potentially break something. They did, in fact, get a raise for that.
Hamtor Tubez
Anchor: Doc the Hamtor
Supervisor: GIF
MRUs: 2 and 3
A puzzle game about leading Hamster-like creatures called Hamtors through elaborate tube mazes. Doc is a Mad Scientist and the leader of the Hamtors and is training them for when he will one day TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!!, and there’s other unique Hamtors with special abilities that get introduced throughout the game as new puzzle elements.
Beneath the Faerie Mound
Anchor: Frida
Supervisor: Quazar
MRUs: 4 and 5
A metroidvania about a Changeling who gets Taken Back and has to fight her way out of Faery Country so she can return home. She initially thinks that MRU5 is another faerie who's come to try Taking her again.
The Fairly Oddparents!
Anchor: Timmy Turner
Supervisor: Spreadsheet
MRUs: 6 and 7
Look, making the Pokemon Anime universe part of the AU has set the precedent for also being able to use cartoons as SMG/MRU universes instead of just Games.
Interestingly, the Memes changing things to make the universe more entertaining undid a lot of the later season retcons, especially the Season 9 ones, so a lot of the characters are actually less Mean and Stupid than before. I'm using kid Timmy because he's the Real One so the live action movies and That One Spinoff aren't canon outside of memes, but Nicktoons Unite and its sequels are. So are seasons 9 and 10, 10 because I happen to like Chloe (or at least what she had the potential to be) and 9 because I think it would be funny to have Sparky be The Thing We Never Speak Of among the characters who would know about him.
Janitor of Heart: Stain Rising
Anchor: Rodney Teegan (Champion Form only)
Supervisor: Connectivity
MRUs: 8 and 9
A Magical Girl Beat-'em-Up that's actually a tie-in to an in-universe comic series called Rodney Teegan: Janitor of Heart.
The premise of the comic series is that a girl named Mina Reynolds who is Exactly the sort of person you'd expect to be a Magical Girl Protagonist gets her chance to when her school is attacked by a goop monster (part of an eldritch being known as The Stain) and she finds a magic bracelet containing the Spirit of Heart, Harmony, who chooses her as the Champion of Heart. But, when she tries to transform, some wires get crossed somewhere and the bracelet's power instead flows into Rodney Teegan, a 57-year-old janitor who Mina considers a close friend and who was with her when she found the bracelet. And because the transformation is based on what Mina wanted to look like as a magical superhero, he ends up in the body of a teenage girl with a cute poofy pink outfit. Whoops.
In his Champion form, Rodney has the expected enhanced strength, and can heal very quickly, but his main power is being able to turn cleaning supplies into weapons. It can be something as simple as a broom (in fact his signature weapon is a spear made from a push broom) or as massive and complex as a street sweeper truck. Also, Harmony isn't just a Cute Mascot Character and actually joins in fighting, mainly using super-strong punches and kicks and acting as a healer. Mina still has the bracelet (it actually can't come off at all) and needs to be nearby in order for Rodney and Harmony's powers to work. I have not come up with what Rodney's hero name would be.
Anyway, the game depicts the events of a particularly large Stain attack, this one being an invasion of the whole city, but other than the larger workload it'd be a fairly normal day (since by this point the three of them are more-or-less used to this since it's been a few months) if not for someone new joining the fray. It turns out that Harmony isn't the only Spirit in town, because we're introduced to the Champion of Storms, Thunderbird, and her Spirit partner Zap. Thunderbird has weather control powers, usually favoring lightning, and has a strange transforming mechanical construct that she uses both as a weapon and mobility aid, usually mechanical wings, giant electrified gauntlets, or supersonic skates. She's fighting the stain too, but has apparently decided to start a rivalry with Rodney's team instead of working with them just 'cause. Also, when her machine isn't in Skate Mode it's revealed that she has a translucent magical construct in place of her right leg.
She's eventually revealed to be Hazel O'Brien, one of Mina's classmates. The machine is her wheelchair, which transformed along with her because why wouldn't it?
Interestingly, Connected Cosmos Company were the ones who made the game, and also the ones who came up with Hazel and her Thunderbird persona. However, due to the terms of the licensing agreement the comic's creator owns the rights to the character, and has made sure that the specific designer in CCC who made her gets the royalties for the character being used in the comic (because the game is canon to the comic and Hazel's now a major character), rather than the company as a whole. She's the one character created by CCC that Jayin doesn't own, and I like to think that grates on her, especially because she can't do anything about it without damaging her company's carefully cultivated reputation.
Anyway, as far as the MRU stuff goes, there is one odd quirk about Rodney's Anchor Status: due to only his Champion Form being playable, his Anchor code is dormant in his normal form. Thankfully this doesn't cause problems for the Meme Cycle or the universe's stability, and it doesn't have the same negative effects as actively suppressing his Anchor Tendencies would. It does, however, make it so his Champion form has a different personality (bubbly airhead with occasional violent tendencies) than his normal form, which is very much Not A Thing in canon.

Elriel Month - Peace & Quiet
Tumblr media
(Mood Board Series + a little snippet)
Elain sat at a small, wrought-iron table, the candlelight flickering over the mounds of correspondences laid before her. She was concentrating on the letter in hand so intensely she did not immediately hear Azriel approach. Did not feel him until a second too late--when the tip of Truth-Teller pressed gently against her throat.
"Too late," he breathed softly.
Elain sighed, her outstretched hand just short of gripping the knife hidden beneath the table. "I was distracted," she admitted, suddenly disappointed in herself.
But Az just chuckled, withdrawing the dagger. Leaning forward, he pressed a palm to either side of her and brought his mouth to her ear. "Distraction will cost you."
She knew. Nuala had scolded her for it enough.
"Why are you reading these at this hour?" he asked, a note of amusement in his voice.
The letters were from various spies within the Spymaster's network. They used codes for words, so that if the letters were ever intercepted, they would not reveal their true content. The problem was there were endless codes, and they fooled Elain as much as their enemies, since Cerridwen would no longer allow her to cheat and look them up.
Why did colors need to really mean numbers? And why did some phrases mean completely different things?
You should see the view from the balcony really meant: the target has been captured.
Nonsense. Faerie nonsense.
"I am still struggling to decipher your language, Spymaster," Elain finally answered him. She shook her head at the letter before her. "It has been grating me all day. Yesterday I told Cerridwen there was a tavern in the toadstool."
Azriel made a sound, as though trying not to laugh. "You will get the hang of it."
Elain just grumbled, staring at the last two sentences of Barnaby's letter. Barnaby was not the male's real name; she had not asked what it was.
"I thought we came here for some peace and quiet?" Az mused.
They had. Rosehall had once belonged to his mother--a sprawling manor in the Night Court countryside. Their home away from home and favorite weekend getaway. Not that they had much time for such things, but they tried to make time when they needed it. Even if that meant bringing some of their work with them.
A smile tugged at Elain's mouth. "Was that what we were earlier? Quiet?"
Azriel nipped playfully at her ear in answer.
Elain laughed, turning at last from the correspondents, and twisted in her chair until she faced him. She had to crane her neck back as Az leaned forward, caging her in, his scent of night-chilled mist and cedar wrapping around her like a second skin. He was shirtless, black hair mussed from sleep, wings flared slightly, and far too beautiful for someone who just crawled out of the sheets.
Sheets that she suddenly longed for--and for the male before her.
Az seemed to read her thoughts, for his eyes darkened, the gold in them catching on the candlelight. But he did not move--barely even paid attention to the casual way she slid the silk robe from her shoulder. His focus was truly something to commend. Which was why she loved pushing him to his threshold and testing his limits.
"You should see the view from the balcony," she said to him.
Amusement flared in those eyes now. The true meaning of her words. "Surrendering so easily?"
Elain shrugged, angling her head to expose her bare neck. "What will you do with me?"
His unrelenting focus shifted to her neck, as though remembering the way his teeth had not long ago sank into her skin. But Azriel merely leaned down, bringing his mouth right where she wanted it. "You'll see," he breathed against her neck, a promise of rapture. "But I doubt you'll be quiet."
---
(Elain was not, in fact, very quiet.)

"The traditional metaphysics of Elfland lie at the heart of true Witchcraft, a body of ancestral faery teachings and arts which formed a hidden tradition transmitted down the centuries across Europe and the British Isles. The historical documentation provides ample evidence of the witches' trafficking with Faerie and their close associations with faery beings and the people of the Sidhe, 'the lordly ones in the hollow hills'.
The underworldly realms of the Sidhe is conceived of asbeing literally 'beneath' the earth, 'underneath' the surface phenomena of nature and middle-earth as an underlying depth-dimension of archetypes and endlessly regenerated potentialities. This is the spiritual landscape of Elfhame where the 'People of Peace' dwell, known to the Irish Celts as Tir Andomain and Tir Na n'Og, the Annwvyn of Welsh tradition and in Teutonic lore, the kingdom of Hel. In the mediaeval period the chthonic realm was known as the Land of Faerie.
In the Netherworld we descend to the very roots of being, into the faery radiance which emanates from the haunted mounds; concealed in the depths is the secret source of generation, death and rebirth for it is the place where the souls of the dead reside between incarnations according to traditional lore. There, the dead are restored and renewed by partaking of the sacred fruit, the apples of the Otherworld plucked from Mother Holle's subterranean orchard or from the trees of Ynys Afallon, ruled over by Morgan Le Faye. The Silver Branch or Craebh Sidhe, which allows passage into Elfland, is a bough upon which three silver apples hang, emitting faery music that entrances all who hear it.
Tumblr media
The 'Hooded Ones', the land-spirits and faery ancestors of ancient Britain; their pointed hoods became the caps of the pixies.
Our ancient forebears possessed a perpetual awareness of other worlds and states of reality which at particular times and places could break through' into our world, often in eerie and eldritch ways. There were also traditionally known loci where the worlds touched, places of intercommunication between middle-earth and Elfland such as trees, mounds, hills, caverns, watercourses, pools and wells. At these sites passage between the worlds could, and still can be effected through the use of the faery arts.
The kingdom of the Sidhe exists outside and beyond the cycles of space/time which govern the material universe - it is well known that travellers to Faerie have spent years there only to find mere minutes have elapsed upon their return to our world. Those who reside for a night in that land may find that centuries have passed when they come back into middle-earth. Elfhame lies outside the circles of time and this mysterious atemporality is the inner key to the metaphysics of rebirth and the cyclic reincarnation of ancestors in their tribal and familial descendants.
Elfland is inhabited by a diversity of intelligences ranging from the divine beings and godlings within the earth to divinized ancestral-souls and non-human faery-entitities, theriomorphs and ornithomorphs. All these beings can be accurately described as faeries, for they all inhabit that mode of existence which is utterly 'other' - the wild and mysterious faery 'state'.
According to the inner doctrine of the faery-faith, the post-mortem soul descends into Elfhame and enters into the state of the Sidhe, sojourning as a faery in the otherworld whilst awaiting the right cyclical patterns which will enable it's earthly rebirth to occur, usually in the body of a clannic descendant. The spirits of the dead thus become mystically unified with the inner heart of the land, merging with particular loci such as hills or trees for the world of the Faerie is the inherent spiritual dimension which exists concealed within the natural landscape as it's inner archetypal reality.
The human' and the 'faery are the two poles of our being between which we oscillate through our transmigrational cycles of rebirths, our countless discarnations and incarnations. In other words, the Sidhe are ourselves awaiting birth in middle-earth and we ourselves are the Sidhe awaiting our return to Elfhame. The faerie Craft is concerned with regaining the totality of our awareness, bridging our human and faery natures and activating the 'Sight of the Two Worlds' or 'Second Sight', the faculty of trance-seership and direct spiritual vision into Elfhame.
The dead thus become faeries between incarnations and certain souls in the underworld may, in time, undergo a complete faery metamorphosis and no longer incarnate as human-beings - these are the 'Master Men' of Scottish witch-lore. The identification of the faery- faith as an ancestral cultus clarifies many hitherto obscure problems and allows us an insight into the destiny of the soul and it's post mortem relationship with the noumenal and natural environments. The Faery Rade or Sluagh Sidhe rides out at Halloween, the liminal and intercalendary time of the hallowed ancestral souls. This Faery Host manifests along the dead straight 'faery passes' which link the sepulchral tumuli which are their forts, changing their hunting-grounds at the four Quarter-Days. These 'faery-roads' are a Celtic analogue to the Dutch 'death-roads' and German 'Geisterweige', the Saxon 'deada waeg', the tracks of the Wild Hunt and the spectral Black Dog and the traditional English Corpse-Roads', 'Coffin-Paths' and 'Church-ways' - they are all funereal lines of spirit-movement which link burial places, graveyards and mounds. On the west coast of Ireland much oral folk-lore makes the identity of the faeries as the souls of the departed very clear for they say that if you have many dead friends you will have many good faeries about you. The Sidhe of Irish tradition and the Elves in German folklore, are the chtonic faery-ancestors, divinized souls who have passed below the land and who exert a subtle influence upon the living in whom they await rebirth, mysteriously informing their minds and bodies from the depths of the hidden kingdoms. As Jacob Grimm astutely observed: "The dead were known to the Norsemen as elves."

i was feeling lots of emotions at once and wrote a thing blame ari
why must i be chained to this mortal world
this serious, unrelenting, mortal world
when now outside my window i heard
my beautiful neighing horse?
i heard my beautiful neighing horse,
grazing in my yard
and as i look into his eyes
i see that he, too, wants to go far
to go far, far away we both desire
into the vast galaxies beyond
and in a final act of rebellion to conspire
the words "yield beneath my magic wand!"
for there is magic everywhere, my horse agrees
even in the places we cannot see
like in that muddy little gully
or the teeming with tadpoles pond.
with magic, what can possibly go wrong?
i spring from my bed, determined to wander
and run outside to my horse, so spright and young
and i tell him "you, my beautiful horse, come,
for we shall escape from this mortal world
and go back to where we truly came from"
i jump on his back as he delightedly neighs
and to my surprise, at his sides grow two
magnificent wings!
i pat his neck as a gesture of love,
and i whisper in his ear,
"you, my winged horse, my dear,
you and i shall escape from this mortal world
and go back to where we truly came from"
i turn and look back at our small house
and remember my parents sleeping inside,
not making a sound.
they don't know we are going away forever,
they don't suspect a thing!
my horse readies himself and leaps off the ground,
his mighty wings carrying him over hills and mounds
as we ascend to the dark colored skies
and venture into the galaxies beyond.
we are greeted by the moon
as she calls out to us like a mourning loon
and the stars do the same,
shrouding us in light,
laughing in small voices,
"we can't believe you came!"
i look back to my horse
my beloved, my dearest, my winged horse
and i say to him,
"you, my little horse, do you remember the house and what laid beyond?
The little teeming with tadpoles pond?
Do you remember when we used to pick sticks
And yell to the adults, 'you! yield to my magic wand!'
do you remember when we thought magic
only a distant dream?
well, my beloved, my dearest, my winged horse
here there exist elemental faeries, and here
do the winged fish swim in magical streams.
here, my dear, it is not a dream."
and then i woke up
and i looked to my horse outside, still grazing
and i could hear my parents saying, "breakfast is ready, come on, don't be so lazy!"
i ate my pancakes, covered in chocolate
and i walked sadly to my horse, and i said to him
"my lovely, my dearest, winged horse,
one day we will leave this mortal world
and explore what lies beyond together."
meanwhile he licked my face and nuzzled my chest with such a sad look in his eyes, though he didn't even know what wings were.

Hey, so I’m doing a fun a fanfic au idea with some friends, and we kinda incorporated the fae into it, with one of the main characters being an extremely powerful fae- and since we’re combining as many mythologies as we can into it (saying it’s kinda like the Percy Jackson series where all of them are true at the same time, even when they contradict), we made him be the god of fae
I was wondering how ‘realistic’ that would be? I don’t believe in fae (but I respect other people’s beliefs), but from the research I’ve done, I don’t think that’s an actual thing. We kind of made it so he intermingles with other fae and despite being more powerful, is still bound to the same rules as them (though he isn’t tied to one of the courts). So,, I guess the question would be how if the fae had a patron god, if you have an idea on how that would impact things?
Also, if it’s okay to ask- I know my first ask is already complex- what subtypes of fae are there? I think there’s a lot, so I’m not asking for a full list, but the ones I currently know are just pixies and brownies (and we’re saying gremlins are a subtype just for a different reason, but I don’t think they actually are in fae canon)
Hmm. It's an interesting question. I also do not believe in the existence of a metaphysical, supernatural, or preternatural people who dwell mostly unseen by mortal eye, though I do try to keep an open mind about most things as it would be the hubris of a great fool to never examine one's own beliefs with skepticism and a critical eye from time to time.
However... your question is as to whether a deity for such a people as the Faerie Folk would work at all in your proposed work of fiction, and if yes... how. I believe it could work. I cannot call to mind any specific instances where the Faerie were depicted as having literal deities (as distinct from a single omnipotent and omniscient monotheistic deity, the deities I refer to are divine... but not all powerful or all knowing), however there are an uncountable number of stories where the line between the Fae themselves and ancient worshiped deities is largely illusory and defined only by the slow passage of time. A good example of this is the Goddess Danu. The "Tuatha Dé Danann" from Irish Mythology are a supernatural race who were sometimes thought by scholars to be the deities of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland. However at some point they were diminished (either in a folkloric sense as stories changed or a literal sense as their power was taken or given up and they went into hiding) and became the "Aes Sídhe". The title Aes Sidhe is roughly translated to "People of the Mounds", detailing their dwelling places or courts beneath the large burial mounds of Ancient Ireland. Alternatively "Tuatha Dé Danann" meant "People of the Goddess Danu". There is very little we know directly about the deity we call Danu, other than that this supernatural people seemed to be under her dominion or care somehow. Some evidence that depicts her as a Mother Goddess does exist, and there is much speculation about whether there are parallels and connections to a variety of deities across Europe which depict a similar figure who is a Mother Goddess or Queen of the Gods. One interesting example is Abnoba, a Gaulish Goddess who was once worshiped in the Black Forest as a forest and water deity, who has connections with the river Danube (also related to the Goddess Danu). There are even possible, though unproved, connections to the Fae, though more so to the tradition of Fairy Tales and to general enchanted creatures and persons who populate Germanic Folklore. We don't know what Danu was like or how she interacted with her people, whether they worshiped her unseeing or if she walked among them. And there are often kings, lords, queens, and other rulers or beings in Faerie who are so incredibly powerful that they may as well be god-like in ways who do walk among their people and play a part in everyday life. So your question of how depends largely upon what their purpose in staying would be. Patron could mean protector, in which case you must ask what are they being protected from and how are they being protected from it? Or Patron could be a guide or teacher, offering knowledge or spiritual insight. Or it could even mean someone who inspires or in some way provides the resources for the arts such as theater, music, sculpture, etc. A lot depends on how the role was obtained, how the folk themselves view him, as either a powerful friend or an actual authority. Your other question, the list of Fae Subtypes, is perfectly acceptable. I ask, however, that you send it in a separate ask so that I can answer it properly by itself when I have the time to do so. Thank you. I hope this was helpful to you answered some of your question. It was a very interesting topic to consider.

Gwynne O’Briain
Tumblr media
BACKGROUND ON GWYNNE’S FAERIE TYPE
Prevalent in ancient Celtic mythology is the Tuatha dè Danann (pronounced Too-a Day Dah-nuhn), which means People of the Goddess Danu, and they are believed to be her children. They are believed to have magically materialized from a cloud of mist from across the northern sea. They are a subcategory of Trooping Faes.
The Tuatha dè Danann were immortal and known for their magical abilities, as well as their power, charm, elegance, and cleverness. They were believed to have ruled Ireland four thousand years ago.
They’re described as beautiful and graceful, often have pale or golden skin, and some believe they have Greek origins.
They withdrew to the Otherworld underground beneath the Sidhe (pronounced shee) mounds when they were invaded and overpowered by the Milesians. Scholars believe the Milesians were most likely the first Gaels in Ireland and ancestors of the modern Irish.
It is thought they continue to practice their magic in the Otherworld. Their courts, towns, culture, and festivities have all been preserved. Humans might venture too far into this Otherworld if they found the secret entrance.
SYNOPSIS
( In collaboration with the magnificent @wonderhevrts ❤️ )
Gwynne, youngest daughter of Rian and Aurina O’Briain ( the monarchs of Braiwyth, a kingdom within the Otherworld ) and youngest sister to Elsie ( their father’s successor ), is a handful. A bright light within the kingdom, always smiling and kind and the life of every single feast and party, but finding herself rebelling outside of her parents’ orders to stay within their kingdom’s walls. Though she is often reprimanded for it, the young princess cannot help but want to explore more of what her world, and other worlds, have to offer.
One evening, under the cover of darkness, Gwynne slips out of her home and finds herself going through the portal leading to the human realm. It is here that she falls in love with human life and the bustle of it all, and decides to stay. Here, she discreetly learns about human behavior, how they communicate, how they get to and from places, what they indulge themselves in and so on. Gwynne is excited about this new way of life and wants to partake in it, that is, until her sister finds her a week later and is insisting she come home.
After pleading with her to stay, Elsie then goes to meet with their father. She convinces him that they both wish to stay to study the humans and better understand them instead of fearing them and though he was a bit reluctant, he conceded. It’s now been a few years since then, and Gwynne and Elsie are enjoying what the human world has to offer them.
VERSES
Hello Humans! - Main Verse ( 1000+ years old ; time could vary within how long she’s in the human realm, usually between 2-5 years )
Gwynne lives in her own apartment, enjoying her time in the human world and continuoiusly learning their ways. Oh, and she has an O.nlyF.ans account to earn money.
Rebellious Princess - Otherworld Verse
Gwynne is still at home in Braiwyth, wreaking havoc within the kingdom and making up her own kinds of fun, much to her parents and sister’s dismay.
Archfey - W.itcher Verse ( I’m taking inspo from a fanon page mixed with my own ideas since I don’t like all that the fanon page states )
Gwynne is an Archfey ( Seelie ) living among humans and other supernaturals in The Continent. Archfey are highly powerful creatures that even surpass higher vampires and rival the likes of Gaunter O’Dimm ( W.itcher 3 character - please read about him if you’re unfamiliar with him ). She lives within a community of Archfeys, having settled there over thousands of years prior, and is recognized by the ruler of Toussaint and regarded with respect and have become trading partners. The people of Toussaint don’t bother them, and vice versa. Gwynne lives in her large cottage near the banks of a river in a forest that separates Toussaint and their domain ( name of said domain remains unknown atm ).
--- ABILITIES INCLUDE ( not including the blessings magic in the fanon page ):
Flight: With the use of wings that are normally hidden beneath her skin when among humans, she is able to fly anywhere with advanced speed.
Curse Magic: If an Archfey is taught to and inclined they can use magic relating to curses.
Illusionary Magic: An Archfey can perform the most common tricks or the most powerful illusionary spells. They can perform vanishing acts, pull dozens of scarfs out of their mouths, or even create conjuring spells from various bizarre spells.
Nature Magic: An Archfey can use magic to cast spells that draw upon the physical forces of the natural world. They can create/control elemental creatures, cast spells and harness natures magical energies.
Polymorphy: An Archfey can change their shape, size, color, density, texture, cellular composition, and/or atomic composition to mimic qualities, impersonate entities, amplify abilities, and/or traverse environments.
Transmutation Magic: An Archfey can utilize a form of magic based on and/or take control of transmutation of living or non-living things, ranging from simple changes and modifications to more complex and powerful transformations, allowing for harnessing their magical energies and/or mystical control the aspects of a verity of forms.
Wish Granting: An Archfey has the ability to make wishes, whether their own or those of other individuals, come true.
ABILITIES ( pertaining to her main and otherworld verses )
Glamour --- Giving off an illusion to fend off enemies, such as changing appearance or creating things to appear.
Flying --- Traveling by flight, using the air around her
Telepathy --- Being able to communicate via the mind
Teleportation --- Being able to travel anywhere, including other realms and universes
Language --- They are able to speak any language just by hearing it once.
Magic --- Casting spells and brewing special potions
Elemental Magic --- Using the elements around them when casting magic
Dark Magic --- Magic that is forbidden and yet she of course found out how to use it
Please note that the magic Gwynne and her sister Elsie conjure are incredibly powerful. They are high fae beings, having elder blood in their veins that enhance their powers infinitely more than other fae. If they really wanted to, they could snap someone in half, whether human or supernatural, without blinking or exerting much effort in their magic wielding. As friendly and loving and fun as they can be, they are not to be trifled with.

ABILITIES ( pertaining to her main and otherworld verses )
Glamour — Giving off an illusion to fend off enemies, such as changing appearance or creating things to appear.
Flying — Traveling by flight, using the air around her
Telepathy — Being able to communicate via the mind
Teleportation — Being able to travel anywhere, including other realms and universes
Healing - Is able to use her own energy to heal another. Will weaken her to some degree.
Language — They are able to speak any language just by hearing it once.
Magic — Casting spells and brewing special potions
Elemental Magic — Using the elements around them when casting magic
Dark Magic — Magic that is forbidden and yet she of course found out how to use it
Please note that the magic Gwynne and her sister Elsie conjure are incredibly powerful.
ABILITIES FOR ARCHFEY VERSE ( not including the blessings magic in the fanon page ):

Hey Mate, got tips for Brigid Worship that doesn't involve American/English/Wiccan stuff? I'm an Irish ex-Catholic who's trying to worship the Tuatha Dé Danann (I'm mainly focusing on Brigid because I loved her Saint equivalent growing up), but a lot of my research keeps showing me English/American Neogpagan and Wiccan Shite. Any advice?
hey mate! i’ll link some resources for you to peruse, hopefully they help. mix up of gaelic-centric and celtic-centric pagan resources
Gaol Naofa (a website discussing Gaelic polytheism)
Tairis (another website discussing Gaelic polytheism)

The Cailleach in Irish Megalithic Traditions
Druids, Deer, and Words of Power: Coming to Terms with Evil in Medieval Ireland
The Book of Celtic Magic: Transformative Teachings from the Cauldron of Awen by Kristoffer Hughes

Irish Imbolc Customs
Scottish Deities: Brighde
Brighid, Goddess and Saint
Tending Brighid’s Flame (amazon bleugh)
How to Make a Brighid Cross from Rushes
to keep in mind while reading: Cailleach is not a member of the Tuatha Dé, and her lore supersedes theirs by a long shot. The Cailleach - Brighid dichotomy is specifically a Scottish folkloric tradition and does not appear in Irish folkloric tradition.
as far as personal experience, i don’t know much about brighid. never formed a bond with her, honestly, and she’s never shown interest in me in return. but i still celebrate her feast and do a lot of basic worship of her that day.
my main tip for you would be that, well... it’ll seem harsh, but coming from a fellow irish person, the tuatha de danann are nothing like the catholic god. they don’t love you unconditionally, and they aren’t omnipresent or all knowing. wise and powerful, fer sure, but your relationship with them will be completely different and unfamiliar at first.
the irish deities were originally venerated ancestors. they became divine as the legends of them spread. the tuatha de danann are more like if an EXTREMELY powerful and respected war general was your landlord. offerings are less about connection and more about payin’ your rent!
at the bare bones basics: there was an agreement between humans and them that they’d retreat from the war that was resulting in the near-extinction of both their peoples, IF the human invaders would leave part of their harvest goods for them on the mounds and edges of forests and windowsills on certain fests and holidays. with that deal struck, the tuatha de danann retreated underground beneath the faery mounds and very soil we stand on.
so keep in mind: the gods do not love you until you build that relationship. they’re not your parent, they’re not a friend. they are wiser, stronger, and more powerful than you in every way. holy fear should be part of it at first when it comes to irish deities. obviously you can still form a close bond, even worship them or become a close communicator! but you have to earn that first.

The Paths We Take Part 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Fairy King!Steve Rogers x Reader Warnings: yandere, obsession, kidnapping, forced marriage, non-con. Words: 1857. Summary: As your little sister has been kidnapped by the fair folk, you have to set her free, exchanging your life for hers. Part 1 P.S. A huge thank you to @deceitfuldevout for inspiring me to write this chapter! ________________ Smiling to himself, Steve had reached out to your face, his gaze sweeping over you in cold admiration as he watched you sleep. You furrowed your brows anxiously – it seemed you had a nightmare, but Steve did not hurry to wake you up. He considered it his little revenge for your misbehavior earlier when you refused to kiss him after his return from the hunt.
The Unseelie King’s unnaturally pale skin looked grey under the moonlight, his lips of dark blue color. He was still strikingly handsome without the glamour spell, but it was not the beauty lowly humans appreciated, and you screamed when you first saw Steve in his true form, his features painfully sharp, his pale naked body littered with scars that frightened you. Thinking of that, the King smirked. Now he almost never used spells to appear more human-like.
You shifted in that little nest his fairies made for you, rubbing your eyes tiredly; you had hard times sleeping since the summer solstice was coming soon, and you were forced to prepare along with the Unseelie Court you were a part of now.
Before you opened your eyes, Steve leaned closer, claiming your lips in a gentle kiss, his fingers in your uncombed hair. Your skin was warm and soft, and he admired how human you still were after all the rituals he held to bound you to him. In the end, humans could never live as long as even the weakest of fairies.
“Goodnight, little one.” The King smiled, and you frowned at him, your eyes on his dark blue lips.
“It is a very strange tradition of yours.” You grumbled in return, knowing it was way too early to be awake. “People wish each other goodnight before going to sleep, not when somebody wakes them up in the middle of the night.”
The Fae laughed at your grimace and gave you one more kiss as you trembled slightly when his cold lips touched yours. He put your hand on his cheek, making you brush your fingers against the big scar you gave Steve the night he took you away. Your lovely wedding gift to him, he chuckled every time when some fae lord asked him. Steve was oddly proud of you resolve to fight him. Maybe this was why he married you in the first place because you could think of no other reason.
“Did you have a tough day, little one? I know you were busy preparing for the solstice.” He got inside the nest and made you lay on his chest, using a bit of force – you were not too compliant yet. Maybe you would never be, he thought to himself. “I hope you did not forget to make a wreath for me?”
A wreath of meadowsweet and flowers that had to be sent floating in the pond. It was a ritual to bound a man who would pick it to a maiden who weaved the wreath. You heard of it before but had never had anyone you wanted to make a wreath for. You still had a hard time understanding why the Fae King cared for this tradition – he had already forced you to become his wife despite all your attempts to kill or escape him.
“Of course, I made it.” You said and pointed to a pile of herbs and flowers. “It’s over there.”
“No poisonous plants or thorns?” As the King narrowed his eyes at you, you chuckled, sending him a smug look.
“Tomorrow night pick it up and see for yourself, lord fae.”
He grinned at you darkly, and you felt shiver running down your spine. You could still feel his bites on your inner thighs the last time you tried to trick him, and Steve gently brushed his hand against your skin as he spread your legs, caressing your core hidden beneath your silky dress to remind you of it.
“Silly little girl.” He whispered in your ear, biting your earlobe. “You like to hurt me, don’t you?”
“It’s you who like to hurt me.” You hissed in return, trying to wriggle free, but his grip on you prevented you from pushing Steve away. “You have been trying to make my life insufferable, and yet you expect me to accept it and submit to you? Oh no, my King. Every time you hurt me, I will hurt you too.”
As you tried biting fae’s arm to force him to release you, Steve laughed at you, rolling you on top of him and placing your palms on his chest while pressing his hands over yours. You could feel him becoming hard, and your cheeks grew hot from shame as you bit down on your lip, sending the King an icy glare. You had long lost your innocence since the night when you exchanged your vows, but you were still not accustomed to being with a man. You hoped Steve would be shifting his admiration with astonishing versatility so you would not need to be the object of his affection constantly, yet as far he had never even once set his eyes on someone else.
His grin became wider.
“I have always admired your strength of character.” The fae lord winked at you mockingly, humming as he grinded his hips against yours, pushing you up. “Do not worry, you will have a fair chance against me after the summer solstice, I give you my word.”
You clenched your teeth. The last time he said it was when the forest sprites pushed your little sister into the faerie ring, and she disappeared into the human realm. You had not seen her after that, always staying with the Unseelie Court, yet you were lucky to get news how she was doing as Steve been sending you the forest sprites who spied on her. Luckily, she was taken under the old woman’s wing, the one who had escaped from the faerie ring just like her.
“What do you mean?” You grunted.
“Have you not heard, little one? Why do you think I have demanded you to weave a wreath for me?”
His blue lips curled into a smirk, and you grew more nervous, wishing you could part from him and wrap your arms around yourself instead. There was something odd in his voice when he spoke, “The bonding spell made during the night of summer solstice is a very powerful one.”
“But we have already bonded.” You blinked, watching him. “This ritual is useless for the ones who are married. Why doing it now?”
“I have a lot to teach you, I see,” Steve chuckled and raised his head to kiss you against your will again. “This has nothing to do with that silly little ritual of yours. The bonding spell I will cast can bind our spirit, mind, and body. I will feel what you feel. I will know what you think of. I will sense where are you, and I will always find you wherever you run from me.”
For a second you became quiet, your eyes wide, body tensing as you realized what the lord fae was going to do to you. No more escape attempts, no more misbehaving, no more trying to kill him. Steve was going to have you under his thumb.
The next moment you were fighting him to get away and crush the beautiful meadowsweet wreath you had made, biting and pushing and kicking your husband. The Unseelie King was laughing like a madman at your pathetic attempts to get rid of him, and soon he climbed over you as he pushed you down to the ground, pressing your arms together with his hand.
“Stop fighting, little one.” He stared at you with his deep dark eyes, his smile not reaching them. “Every Fae King casts this spell upon marrying.”
“This is a lie, and you know it.” You snarled at him – in such short period of time you had already sensed when he was not being honest with you. The fae smirked at you in return.
“You are so perceptive, my dear. Very well, not every. But most of our kind do not choose mortal women as our spouses, and it is only natural for a husband to prolong the life of his wife. Is it that bad? You will become as strong as I am.”
“Why would I need your str-“
You fell silent, frowning at his words while Steve was dropping heated kisses to your neck, ripping your clothes and then pressing his lips to your bared shoulders. Strong as him? Why would you become as strong as him? He was not only a fairy, but the King of the Unseelie Court. Not many could match his power even among his own kind. How was it possible for a mere mortal?
“The bonding spell I will cast can bind our spirit, mind, and body.”
“I will feel what you feel,” you whispered, repeating after him as the lord fae kissed your tummy, getting in between your legs, “I will know what you think of.” His hand was gently rubbing circles on your mound, and your body grew warm to the King’s delight. He lowered his head as he left a tender kiss on your inner thigh.
Oh. As you would feel his pain, he would feel yours. If you hurt yourself, he would be hurt too.
His tongue on your clit drew a loud moan from you, and you hurriedly covered your mouth with your palm, ashamed at the noise you made. The Fairy King was quite experienced in making women squirm beneath him, and it both irritated and pleased you as you shivered, biting your tongue to stop being so loud.
“Do you understand what you are doing, my King?” You whimpered, feeling his long wet tongue inside you, trying to resist him and failing miserably as you kept moaning from his touches. “Ah!.. I-I can make you… r-regret it.”
“You will have to find a better weapon than an iron nail.” The fae grinned at you, finally rising above you and undressing himself, his face glistening with your juices. “Because the spell will not weaken me, little one, it will make you stronger. But please do not think it will be easier for you to win, sweetheart, for we will become one.”
Before you had time to reply, his hips surged forward, and you muffled a moan in your palm. Taking his entire length was not easy for you still, and if he did not prepare you with his tongue, you would cry out in pain. Steve gently shushed you, kissing your forehead and settling in between your thighs, reaching deep inside you, and drawing more shameful noises from you.
“Shh, darling. I will be gentle.” He whispered, basking in the warmth of your human body, his own heating up quickly as he slowly started to move, filling you to the brim.
Biting your lips, you finally stopped resisting, enjoying the intimacy and taking your King just like he wanted you to.
You would have time to think about hurting him later while making a new wreath for him, without poisonous wild parsnip you hid beneath the meadowsweet. _____________________ Tags: @finleyjayne @alexakeyloveloki   @helenaeisenhower @villanellevi @hurricanerin @void-hoechlin @abyssaint @heeeyitskay @chris-evans-indian-fanfic @navegandoaciegas @rosalynshields @brattycherubwrites @sllooney @angrythingstarlight @lovelydarkdaydream

The main antagonist of "Beneath the Faerie Mound" is Lokoko, the Queen of the Faeries and Frida's birth mother. She's not exactly evil, it's just that Faeries in their universe have a very different view of morality from humans, so she genuinely doesn't understand that abducting Frida was a bad thing, or why Frida would want nothing to do with the parent that gave her away as a baby.
Speaking of the second point, the reason she gave Frida away is because at the time her Court was under attack by another, far more powerful Court, and she had to send her daughter somewhere she would be safe. The events of the game happened because the threat was finally dealt with and Frida could be brought home, except Faeries operate on a much longer time scale than humans so by this point Frida is 16 and her village is home, and Faeries are shit at explaining things or taking "no" for an answer so they immediately jumped to kidnapping. Lokoko's aware afterwards that this approach backfired horribly, but she doesn't have any of the context necessary to understand why, so she's most likely going to try again with different strategies later.

Benjamin #5 (smut list)
5. restraining the other
In my Twilight days, I came across a thread that talked about how Meyer originally wanted her story to be a human/faerie romance. Her publisher said, NAY, beetch! Vampires sell! and as it turned out, Meyer didn’t know much about vampire lore and violated many of the core concepts that make vampires interesting. Sparkling, vegetarian vamps without fangs, with venom in their saliva, that are seemingly indestructible aren’t nearly as fun, in my opinion.
What I love about the True Blood vamps is that Charlaine Harris honors much of the canonical lore. My biggest complaint with Meyers is that I just can’t fuck with a vampire that doesn’t have fangs that go … *snick*
Tumblr media
So, the version of Benjamin in this fic will be more in canon with vampire lore.
Tumblr media
Warnings: Blood sucking, wrist restraints, jealousy, and copious smut
“Benjamin! You’re not playing fair,” you pouted as you struggled against your restraints.
“You wish to talk to me about fair? Let’s start from the beginning.”
You narrowed your eyes and waited, knowing it was useless to interrupt.
“First, you come into our home smelling like … like him.”
“Second, you spend all day with … him … and then lie about it to me.”
“Third—”
“How many points do you need to make? I am human and will eventually need to use the bathroom.”
Benjamin appeared beside you, moving too quickly for your eyes. You turned your head from where he had been standing and looked up to meet his gaze. His eyes weren’t wholly black. Little starbursts of crimson remained around his pupils to indicate that while he may not yet be starving, he was definitely hungry.
Waving his hands, the wooden slats on the headboard tightened around your wrists. You were sure that if he could breathe, he’d be taking short, shallow breaths as he wrestled with his jealousy. Instead, you concentrated on his eyes, watching the way they narrowed as he manipulated the earthen molecules that moved through the wood.
“Too tight?” he asked with a casual raise of his eyebrow.
“Nope,” you lied.
“You’re lying.”
Benjamin flexed his fingers and the slats loosened their hold, not enough for you to escape, but enough for you to wiggle your wrists if they grew uncomfortable.
As soon as night fell, Benjamin had been on you, running his hands over your body, inhaling along your pulse points, and with a growl, he had stripped you down to your bra and panties then restrained you in the bed.
He could sense your emotions, but watching your body gave him an even keener insight into what you were feeling. He could smell your arousal, then watch as your panties darkened at the juncture of your thighs; he could observe the blush that crept across your chest when he began to shed layers of his own clothing; and he could uninhibitedly listen as your pulse quickened or steadied.
With a frustrated sigh, your eyes ran over his torso. The lithe muscles covered by his olive skin, his dark nipples hard as he continued to look at you, clearly torn between wanting to ravish and wanting to punish.
Belonging to the undead had its perks, and its detriments. Benjamin loved you, needed you to sustain his own existence and you let him take that from you, delighting in the power you felt when his teeth slipped into your neck, or better yet, into the femoral artery of your thigh. He wanted to make you his, sire you so you would be bonded for eternity, but you weren’t ready yet.
The daytime still offered so many things, namely, the sun. Your current predicament began two weeks ago when you went to the beach with a few friends. As it turned out, your best friend wanted to set you up with one of her brother’s friends: a sweet, good-looking, pre-med student. Because Benjamin was a secret, you couldn’t say no without hurting a slew of feelings, so you figured you could go out on a couple of dates, then discreetly break it off with the whole “it’s not you, it’s me” thing.
None of this you felt was pertinent information for Benjamin to know—that is until he saw you with him.
“Third,” sounded Benjamin’s voice from a shadowy part of the room. You blinked and looked for the movement of his form. “He can give you everything I can’t.”
Your heart ached at the sadness in his voice.
“Benjamin—no. I don’t want anything you can’t give.”
“Children. Safety. A life in the sun and not in the shadows.” His accent was thicker, his tone less controlled, as he shared his deepest fear.
“But you can give me forever.”
Benjamin slowly stepped back into the light, his muscles flexing beneath his torso as he walked. His face was a mask, a perfectly carved Adonis that conveyed nothing its owner didn’t wish to share.
“So, you will not see him any longer?”
“I’ll break it off tomorrow morning.”
“And you will never do this again?” Benjamin asked, but underneath the question was a warning.
“Never again.”
“Then I’ll release you.”
Before he could loosen the slats, you cleared your throat and shifted on the bed. “Or . . . you could fuck me like this? Restrained and at your mercy.”
Benjamin shivered, like the visual equivalent of a cat’s purr as he circled the bed, waiting for any sign you weren’t being honest.
“Please,” you begged, flexing against the wood. “Teach me a lesson.”
Benjamin’s mouth popped open as his fangs snicked out, his tongue poking between them to wet his lower lip. A quick glance at his trouser fronts told you he was very excited to have you at his mercy—not that you weren’t naturally a creature of lesser power, but this game . . . this was new.
“You,” he began, his accent once again thick, sultry, “belong to me.”
He removed the rest of his clothes, once again too quick for your mortal eye. Your breathing quickened with excitement as your eyes roved over his body, travelling from his face, down his chest to the dark patch of hair at the base of his fantastically hard cock.
You watched the muscles of his thighs flex as he stepped toward the bed, and in another blur of movement, you were naked, too, another set of underwear torn to shreds.
“Look at you,” he whispered. “Exposed. Vulnerable. Your body begging for my touch.”
He ran his tongue along the front of his teeth, and you watched, wanting to do the same, to curl your tongue around those deadly points.
“Please, Benjamin,” you whined as your wrists twisted in your restraints, your fingers flexing.
“Tell me,” he said, crawling onto the bed and straddling your thigh. “Did you kiss him?”
“Of course not!”
“Why?” Benjamin’s hands ran up your body, feather light and leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake.
“Because I’m yours.”
Benjamin grasped your breasts, gently squeezing before he took your nipples between his forefingers and thumbs, rubbing and pulling lightly.
You gasped, your hips bucking up, but restrained by the weight of his body on your thigh. Your wrists were caught in the slats as you unconsciously moved your arms, wanting to touch him.
Benjamin’s eyes flickered to this movement and his face broke into a smirk.
“Did you want him to kiss you? To press his lips to yours as his tongue slid along them, seeking permission to claim you?
“No,” you shook your head, your eyes locked on his. “No.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m yours.”
Benjamin’s fangs retracted with a hollow snick and he descended on your mouth, claiming you with a bruising kiss. He sucked and nipped at your lips, his cock grinding into your abdomen while his tongue explored every inch of your mouth until you were struggling to breathe. He pushed, kissing you to your limit, and when he pulled back, your chest was heaving, your body tight with an ache that only he could soothe.
He looked down at you, his eyes predatory, and he opened his mouth, his fangs popping out.
“You are mine,” Benjamin stated with finality and when his fangs slid into your neck your body arched, rolling against his as your eyes rolled back from the sting of pain that was quickly followed by a surge of pleasure as he sucked, drawing your blood into his mouth and swallowing before he licked at the wound. He pierced the tip of his tongue with his fang and used his blood to heal the puncture marks, leaving nothing but your smooth skin looking as if it had never been touched.
“Please, Benjamin. I need you. Please,” you begged, tugging again at the headboard, your fingers tapping into the wood, pressing with the desire to angle yourself so he could slide into your soaking pussy.
Benjamin ignored your plea in favor of kissing down your body at an agonizingly slow pace. There wasn’t a patch of skin left on your torso that he didn’t press his lips against, that he didn’t taste. Tears stood in your eyes as you wriggled under his weight, your clit swollen with need.
You’d given up begging, and instead were reduced to whimpers as he teased you, and when he finally moved his weight to spread your thighs open two fat tears leaked from your eyes. Benjamin chuckled and caught them on his tongue, licking along your jaw and up your cheeks before he returned to his spot between your legs.
His mouth was sinful considering his tongue could flick across your clit at a rate no human man could match, but your pleasure wasn’t a part of this game, not yet.
Benjamin asked you to watch him, drawing your eyes open so you could look down your body at him, his curly head moving across your abdomen, drifting over your upper thighs, and when he kissed your mound, he looked up at you, his eyes more red than black now.
“Who do you belong to?”
“You—I be-be-belong to you,” you stuttered as his tongue touched your clit.
He smirked and licked you again, unbearably slow.
You groaned, desperation making the muscles in your abdomen and your thighs tremor.
He flicked his tongue across your clit in earnest, building you up to a climax, but before you could tumble over the edge, he stopped and moved up your body so quickly that he seemed to just disappear and reappear. He clutched your jaw and your eyes opened wide as he spoke, his lips just close enough to yours to touch, for you to feel as he said, “You. Are. Mine.”
And in another blink, he was back between your thighs, sucking on your clit and sending you over the edge, and just when you thought your orgasm was ebbing, Benjamin’s fingers slid inside of your pussy and stroked your g-spot as his fangs slid into your thigh. The pinprick of pain was mixed with the pleasure of another orgasm, this one full-bodied and so intense that it coated Benjamin’s fingers and hand in spurts of your arousal.
Noises of pleasure thrummed from your throat and your body chased after his fingers, needing more.
With a groan as he licked off his fingers, he released you from your restraints. You shook your wrists, but in a flash your legs were hooked under his arms and pushed nearly up to your chest as he thrust inside of you, and for the first time, he moaned, a low, deep rumble.
“Mine,” he growled against your lips before he kissed you, the taste of yourself, your blood and your arousal, mixed bittersweet on his tongue.
“Yours,” you panted. “Yours. Yours. Yours.”
Benjamin fucked you, alternating between deep and hard and shallow and sweet until you were on the brink again, wanting nothing more than to come with him, another advantage of the control Benjamin possessed over his body and yours.
He had you on your hands and knees now, his cock pistoning into you at a fast pace, your breath coming in pants, and this time it was Benjamin who begged in a display of humbling reciprocity.
“Can I come inside of you now, my love? Please—can I come?”
“Oh, fuck, Benjamin! Yes, yes!”
You tumbled over the edge together, Benjamin’s hips never faltering as the cool sensation of his cum filling you up made you shiver, then shiver again as he pulled out and pumped himself dry, more ropes of cool cum splashing onto the cheeks of your ass.
You collapsed, out of breath and strength. Benjamin was gone and back in a flash, a warm washcloth rubbing between your legs and over your backside to clean you up.
You felt Benjamin’s body hover over yours as he pressed soft kisses up your spine.
“Did I hurt you?” he asked with genuine concern.
“God no,” you mumbled into the mattress, your breathing still erratic.
He continued to pepper you with sweet kisses until you rolled over, pushing your tangled hair out of your eyes.
His eyes had become that beautiful, deep red and his features seemed softer, even younger than they had an hour or so ago. Reaching up to trace his cheekbones and his nose, you watched him as he watched you, love radiating from his gaze.
“I want it to be like this, always.”
Benjamin smiled, a full grin of joy, as he answered, “My love. When you are ready, it will be better than this. For always.”
“Why? Because you’ll have no one to be jealous over again?” you teased.
He narrowed his eyes and his grin faltered to a thin-lipped smile. “I will make sure to remind you, often, who you belong to.”
“Can I get that in writing?”
Benjamin laughed, the carelessness returning to his features that made him so boyishly handsome.
“Haven’t you yet learned that I will give you anything you want?”
“Anything?” you asked, reaching between his legs and pumping his cock, once, twice, before he grew hard in your hand.
“Anything,” he growled, his fangs flashing.

Fraw Holt or Dame Holda, the northern witch-goddess travelling upon her sacred goose through the night.
“Frau Holda , Venus Mountain and The Night Travellers
From the 10th Century c.e. onwards Frankish clerics and churchmen such as Regino of Prum fulminated sourly against the devilish ' belief of 'certeine wicked women that in the night times they ride abroad with Diana, the goddess of the pagans, or else with Herodias, with an innumerable multitude upon certeine beasts. This was echoed in the fourteenth century law-code of Lorraine which censured those who rode through the air with Diana. The image of the Wild Ancestral Goddess had a powerful influence upon the mediaeval imagination; the author of ‘The Romance of the Rose' wote that a third of the people have dreams of nocturnal journeys with Dame Habondia.
In Northern Europe, the sect of night travelling witches were held to fly through the sky in the retinue of the goddess Herodias or Holda, who leads the ancestral spirits of the Furious Horde in the winter months around Samhain and Yule. Like the Cymric goddess Cerridwen, Frau Holda is the archaic underworld Earth Mother, mistress of death, initiation and rebirth, who rules over the chthonic realm of Hel or Annwvyn. In Scandinavia she is known as Hela, the daughter of Loki, of whom it is related that half of her is fair and half black with decay. This signifies her bright and dark aspects as Freyja/Holda mistress of life and death. The Veiled Goddess encompasses the cosmic dualities of day and night, growth and dissolution, radiance and shadow. Her association with the Wild Hunt is strong in Germany where the ride of the death powers is sometimes called the Heljagd and in Normandy, Mesnee a Hellequin. The Indo-European original of this Witch Goddess is *KOLYO, 'the Coverer' the funereal Otherworld Queen of the Indo-European peoples from which figures as diverse as the Celtic Cailleach and Greek nymph Kalypso are descended.
The life/death aspects of Dame Hela were referred to by the German wizard, herbalist and crystal scryer Diel Breull of Calbach who confessed in 1630 that he had travelled to the pagan holy mountain, the Venusberg, 'four times a year, during the fast.' He had no idea how he got to the mountain. He then confessed he was a night traveller and 'the Frau Holle (to whom he travels) is a fine woman from the front but from the back she is like a hollow tree with rough bark. It was in Venus mountain that he came to know a number of herbs.'
This description corresponds with the female forest spirit called the Skogfru in Old Norse and the woodwife, birch maiden and wild damsel elsewhere who are beautiful women from the front but hollow behind like a rotten log. The woodwives are associated with the Wild Hunt, sometimes being pursued by Woden . (‘Woodwife’ and ‘woodwose’ both stem from the Saxon root-word ‘Wod’ - ‘wild, furious, enthused’). Like many native European initiation sites, the Hurselberg was regarded as the gateway to the underworld, the domain of Frau Venus, the classicized Freyja/Holda. From the Hurseloch cave on the mountain eldritch voices and wailing could sometimes be heard, for it led down into the magical realm of the goddess.
The mediaeval tale of Tannhauser is based upon this initiatory lore for he was a knight minnesinger (troubadour) who while riding past the cavern of the Hurselberg at twilight encountered the beautiful and entrancing Frau Venus, who took him below into the Otherworld regions to be her consort for seven years. In Scottish tradition a related pattern is exemplified by Thomas the Rymer, the thirteen century seer who met the Queen of Elfame beneath the Eildon Thorn and went with her into the world of Faery for seven years.
She gave Thomas a golden apple to eat which conferred the prophetic gift upon him. This is reminiscent of Woden's descent into the heart of Suttungr's mountain where he sleeps with the giantess Gunnlodd to attain the mead of poetic inspiration.
Such goddess forms are comparable to the shamanic Clan Mother of the nether-world in Siberian mythology. And we may note that the worship of the Northern Earth Mother Jord/Hlodyn was carried out at hills and mounds, symbols of the womb of the earth. The Furious Horde at Samhain is esoterically linked with the rune Haegl whose primal form ‘*’ represents the snowflake. This makes sense as Holda is traditionally held to shake down the snow onto the countryside; in the Channel Isles snow showers occur when Herodias shakes her petticoats. Her holy bird, the goose, is also connected with the Wild Hunt, and snow crystals are said to drift from its feathers as it flies overhead. The nocturnal cries of migrating geese are interpreted as the yelping of ghostly Gabriel hounds in Celtic lore and are symbolised by the Bird-Ogham Ngeigh at Samhain. The mystical Ninth Mother-Rune symbolises the nine nights the post-mortem soul takes to travel the Hel-Way, the prototypical Spirit-Road which runs northwards into the Underworld of Helheim.
Frau Holda is the heathen original of Mother Goose, who is remembered at winter tide, and the goose is the magical steed upon which Arctic shamans travel in visionary flight to the Otherworld. The witch Agnes Gerhardt confessed in 1596 that she and her fellow initiates used a vision-salve in order to fly to the dance like snow geese', and went on to describe how she prepared this hallucinogenie ointment by frying tansy, hellebore and wild ginger in butter mixed with egg. Such flying salves' (or Unguentum Sabbati) feature prominently in the worteunning of the night travelling witches.
In fact Styrian witches were still using them in the 19th Century. Hartliepp, court physician of Bavaria, gives a formula used by 15th century Northern witches which involves procuring seven herbs on the appropriate days of the pagan week - heliotrope on Sunna's day, fern on moon day, verbena on Tiw's day, spurge on Woden's day, houseleek on Thor's day, maidenhair on Freyja's day and nightshade on Saeter/Hela's day. This magical operation would ensure that the salve would be empowered with the energies of the principal heathen deities.
In 1582 the Archbishop of Salzburg's counsellor, the erudite mathematician and astrologer Dr. Martin Pegger, was arrested under the charge that his wife had flown with the night travellers to the goddess Herodias in the Unterberg. Within the mountain she had seen Herodias with her mountain-ladies and mountain-dwarves and the goddess is said to have come to Frau Pegger's house by Salzberg fish market on a later occasion. The mention of the goddess' mountain-dwarves is significant for they are sometimes known as the Huldravolk; the folk of the Elder, Frau Holda's holy tree.
The association of cats and hares with witches and night travellers may indicate that they inherited many of the magical techniques from the cult of Seidr, the shamanism of 'inner fire' sacred to the goddess Freyja which included trance journeys and communication with the elves and other entities. According to Saxon lore, Freyja sometimes appears amidst a company of hares and she is known to roam the meadows of Aargau with a silver-grey hare by her side in the night hours. The hare is famed as a totem form in which shapeshifting witches travel.
Tumblr media
Freyja, the Teutonic goddess of love, sexuality and mantic sorcery riding a Siberian tiger.
It is know that a strong subterranean current of Freyja worship survived in mediaeval Germany. Closely related initiatory Mysteries existing in the British Isles usually centred on the Faerie goddess, the Queen of Elphame.
An interesting late case is the astrologer and Hermeticist John Heydon in the 17th century, who having imprudently predicted Cromwell's death was forced to flee from London to Somerset. There he claimed to have encountered a green- robed lady at a faery hill. She took him within the mount into a glass castle where he learnt much wisdom and mantic lore. This experience obviously took place in an altered state of shamanic perception.
Frau Holda is the feminine counterpart of the Master of the Wild Hunt, and she is essential to a balanced appreciation of this area of pagan spirituality. The night- travelling witches of the Northern Lands, far from being demonically deluded as ignorant and vindietive churchmen said, were in reality the preservers of a hoary Wisdom Tradition and magical world view which is now accessible to us again at the dawning of a new heathen aeon.”

Aes Sídhe (Finan x Reader) Part 1
This is my first time writing for The Last Kingdom fandom! I have adored the show since it came out but have always been too nervous to try and write for it. This idea came to mind though and would not leave me alone...so here it is.
Can be read as reader or OFC since there is no real description given.
I want to thank @geekandbooknerd and @medievalfangirl for your own amazing Finan writings. I am slightly embarrassed how many times I have gone back and reread them.
In regards to the title: from my understanding (granted I could be very wrong), an aes sídhe is an Irish term for a supernatural race in Irish and Scottish mythology, similar to fairies and elves.

PART 2
Tumblr media
Finan rose from his spot near the campfire. The sun had not yet set but Uhtred decided to make camp early. Not that Finan was complaining. They had been riding hard for days, heading back to Wintanceaster with news for King Alfred.
 "Where are you off to?"
Finan glanced over at Osferth, who was laying on his side across from the campfire. "I'm going to wash my hands."
"You'll need to wash more than your hands to not smell like a pig sty."
"Oi! What was that, baby monk?" Finan tossed his blanket at the lad, the others around the fire smiling. "Do not lament my absence too much!" He started walking towards the nearby creek, away from their campsite.
"What would we miss? Life is quieter without you."
 "I HEARD THAT, SIHTRIC!"
The sound of laughter followed the Irishman as he carefully made his way down the steep bank to the creek. Only a few paces of rocky sand separated the creek from the steep bank, which surrounded and kept the creek easily hidden. The last of the sunlight peeked through the trees all around. The forest was quiet, the only noises were the bubbling creek and the distant sound of those still around the campfire.
They had decided to camp above and some paces from the creek. It would have been impossible to maneuver the horses down the steep banks and being camped above allowed them to stand watch unencumbered. The only downfall was having to carry water up for the horses. Yet having watched Osferth douse himself when he tripped was worth it. The memory still made Finan chuckle.
Dropping down the last part of the steep bank, he moved to the edge of the creek. The small rocks and sand gave way under his boots. He splashed the cool water over his face and hands then took a moment to watch the droplets fall from his beard back into the creek. If the water had been deeper, he would have stripped down to fully cleanse himself. Alas, it was too shallow but even just cleaning what he could felt refreshing from the dust and sweat of the road.
With a sigh, he allowed the memories he venomously ignored to come forth. This place, the creek bed and the trees, the stillness and the sunlight...it reminded him of a favorite spot from his childhood. Where his brother and himself would sneak away to go looking for faerie mounds or kelpies, much to their mother's dismay. A lighter time. An easier time...before betrayal.
Harshly, he shoved the memories back and closed the lid on them. It did no good to think about them. He was here now. He was happy here. Uhtred was a brother he was bonded to and would readily give his life for. Sihtric and even Osferth were like younger brothers he looked out for. Clapa was a good friend. It was better he was here.
A soft plop in the water made him look up. He knew it was most likely an animal coming to drink or a rock sliding to cause the sound but long years of being a warrior and always on alert forced him to constantly be aware of his surroundings.
What he saw forcibly drew the breath from his lungs in a gasp.
A woman knelt on a large stone, several paces away and across the creek from him. With one hand dipped in the water making slow circles, she watched the ripples as if lost in thought. Her hair was draped over one shoulder, a yellow kingcup flower tucked behind her ear. With her face exposed, her ethereal beauty was on full display for him to bare witness to. There was nothing about her that would not cause the darkest envy in other women and the strongest lust in all men. She was beauty incarnate. A creature not of this world.
He was unable to remove his eyes, nor move or call out, spellbound to only her.
Suddenly she looked up and locked eyes with him. A noose around his neck would have had less of a binding hold on him. Her eyes both pierced and soothed his soul. Her very being a vision that summoned him as a man possessed. Yet he could not move nor break her enchantment. They stared at one another; eyes locked from across the creek.
Ever so slowly she stood up and it was only then he took into account what she was wearing. A thin, white shift covered her, but with the fading sunlight behind her, it was almost transparent. Her outline and curves caressed by the fabric, an enticement and illusion. Never had he witnessed a woman more perfect.
"Are...are you alright, my lady?" His words broke the spell, his tongue finally recalled how to function. But as soon as the words were released, he would have given anything to return them.
After one slow blink of those captivating eyes, she fled. Moving as silently and quickly as a shadow, she jumped off the rock and hurried away on the other side of the creek. Neither rocks nor sticks hindered her bare feet.
"Wait!" He cried out, stumbling over himself as he gave chase. He ran opposite of her, trying to keep her in his sights lest she vanish and he awaken from this dream.
She followed a bend in the creek, darting between two trees that stood sentry on the edge. Uncaring of his clothing, he darted across the creek, the water only reaching mid-calf.  When he crossed over and rounded the bend, desperate for a glimpse of her, only the tranquil sight of the forest and creek lay before him. His eyes scoured everywhere, trying to catch a glimpse of her. There were no footprints his trained eyes could see, no markings that anyone had passed by. He scratched the back of his neck as he turned around once again, hoping he had missed something.
Yet there was nothing. She had vanished.
With a reluctant sigh, he turned to head back to camp. He had been gone long enough the others would question him. A bright spot of color amongst the dull colors of the rocks caught his eye. Moving closer he found a small bush of the kingcup flowers. Gently he stroked one of the many flowers' petals, remembering how they looked in her hair. On a whim, he plucked three and walked back to the stone she had knelt on.
"For you, aes sídhe." He whispered laying them down reverently. The bright yellow stood out on the gray stone, like the sun shining through on a cloudy day.
Looking around him once more, he crossed the creek and headed back towards camp. The further he walked, the more he began to question what he saw. A pinch to the arm proved he was not dreaming. Could it have been some kind of vision? He doubted that. He was not holy enough nor had enough drink to induce one.
 "There he is!"
 "Thought you had finally drown."
Finan threw himself on the ground next to his pack, ignoring the teasing of Osferth and Sihtric. He rubbed a hand over his beard and stared at the sky as the first few stars appeared in the sky. He could not get the image of her out of his head. So beautiful and pure.
A tickling in his ear brought his attention back to the present. He swatted at his ear and looked over to discover Uhtred next to him, a long blade of grass in hand and hovering over his head.
 "What is bothering you?"
Finan sat up, his arms over his knees. "Aes sídhe."
 "What?"
"Nothin'. Thought I had seen somethin' at the water."
Uhtred's brows furrowed slightly, trying to decipher his friend's meaning. "Well while you think, you have first watch. We drew straws earlier and you lost." He slapped Finan on the back.
 "Sihtric rigged it."
"Lies!" Sihtric threw a clump of dirt at a chuckling Osferth. "It was Fate that chose."
"Why are you always throwing stuff at me?" Osferth whined, wiping the dirt mark off his robes.
 "You deserve it."
Uhtred spoke. "It would seem we need to work on your reflexes."
"Yes, lord." Osferth sighed, eyes downcast.
"Don't worry, baby monk, I know what will help. We will take turns throwing knives at you. Eventually you'll dodge them."
 Osferth groaned.
With a clap on Uhtred's shoulder, Finan got up to settle against a tree nearby that offered a better spot for watching the camp and its surroundings. In truth he did not mind being on first watch tonight. With memories of her, clinging to him like summer's heat, he knew sleep would elude him. He tried to push the thoughts of her aside but to no avail. In truth he doubted he would ever be able to forget her.
 ***
The next morning, a rough kick to his back woke him. He groaned, attempting to rub the sleep from his eyes as he sat up.
"I never thought you one for flowers, Finan." Sihtric said, walking to the other side of the camp.
 "What?"
Osferth piped up, head swiveling, looking from Finan to Sihtric. "Or perhaps it is from a special lady?"
"What lady is around here besides the horses?" Sihtric snorted.
 "Maybe it is a horse?"
"What are ya fools talkin' about?" Finan eyed the smirks on the faces of those around him. His mind refused to fully abandon the land of dreams. There had been something... something on the edge of his consciousness but he could not recall it now.
"Behind you." Uhtred nodded towards Finan's pack.
Unsure, he looked to his pack on his other side…and froze. The kingcup flowers lay next to where his head had just been, but this time, a thin white strip of fabric bound the flowers together. Hesitantly he reached out and touched the flowers then fabric, in awe when he could feel their texture beneath his fingers.
She was not a dream or vision.
Without warning he rose to his feet and scanned around him. He ignored the confused looks of his companions. Only on a second scan did he glimpse something. On further inspection, it was the slightest indent of footprints amongst the grasses. It was too small to be any of Uhtred's men. Plus, the blades were barely bent by whose feet stepped on them, they would have been easy to miss.
 "Finan?"
He realized he looked like a madman, first startled by flowers and searching for a sign around them. He stood up, arms crossed when he turned back. "Yes, lord?"
 "Something amiss?"
He wondered if he should tell them. Their camp had been infiltrated and no one knew it. Yet as he opened his mouth, the words died on his tongue.
"No, I just...it must have been a dream."
"If you say." The Dane-Slayer did not look like he fully believed his friend but would let it go this time. "We leave soon."
Ignoring those around him, he knelt in front of his pack. Memories of her, still so sharp even after sleep, came forth unaided. He gently touched the white strip of cloth, reminiscent of her thin shift. Had she torn the strip from it?  Before the others could notice, he stuck the flowers in his pack and the cloth up his arm-guard.
He looked one last time towards the creek. "Go dtí go mbuailfimid le chéile arís, mo aes sídhe." (Until we meet again, my aes sídhe.)
"WE RIDE!" Uhtred called then sent his horse into a canter, his men following him loyally.
Finan could not help one last glance over his shoulder. If he thought he caught a glimpse of a white shift and a form peeking out from between the trees, he could not prove it. He turned back to following the others. In his mind he prayed that this would not be the last time he saw her.

Hello! This may be a dumb af question, but I am writing a book in which the fae Very Much live in a world between worlds sort of space. I've always in the past called such places Sidhe due to a misunderstanding of Celtic lore, but now that I understand what Sidhe actually refers to I no longer know what's appropriate and what's not. Do you have any tips on naming strategies? I'm still using "burrow" styled entrances, though magic as a whole has been literally pushed underground. And I am still incorporating the Courts, esp the Autumn Court and the lack of a recognized UnSeelie ruler.
I just don't want to be writing the novel with self-doubt about calling the place Sidhe and then get to sensitivity readers this summer and people point out how dumb/insensitive it is after the name is ingrained in my electricity spaghetti.
Actually that might be a very good and even important question. Let’s see. Sidhe are the mounds under which the folk are said to live. They themselves are called the Aes Sídhe, the People of the Mounds. That’s all well and good, right? But what is a mound? First off, a mound is simply a heaped pile of earth, rocks, gravel, sand, or debris. The most common types of mound are hills and mountains. Since the Sidhe are very commonly described as “Earthen Mounds” we can guess that this is probably just a large, and fairly stable, dirt hill. But what makes the Sidhe special? Why are those particular mounds of any more importance than any other mound? Well, in old Irish Mythology the Aes Sídhe were thought to live inside them, in caverns and halls in a hollow mound. Vast spaces they were fiercely protective of. The Otherworld, at least as far as is depicted in old Irish Myths, is somewhat unclear when it comes to describing the nature of that realm. Some places mentioned in old stories are Tír na nÓg (Land of the Young), Tír na hÓige (Land of Youth), Tír Tairngire (Land of Promise/Promised Land), Tír fo Thuinn (Land under the Wave), Mag Mell (Plain of Delight/Delightful Plain), Ildathach (Multicoloured Place), and Emain Ablach (the Isle of Apple Trees). All depictions of a beautiful and magical world, though one that isn’t always kind to humans who venture within. But some stories also tell of gigantic stone caverns with roofs so high that clouds form and rain can fall, where trees grow in the soft light of an underground sun or of glowing crystals, where palaces of white stones and twinkling lights is the source of laughter and song as Faeries feast away. Another variation on the tale inches closer to what you’re asking, speaking of another palace beneath the earth, but also beneath the water, as if a hidden layer of air was trapped by some means at the bottom of a deep loch or somewhere off the shore, and those below could gaze up through the waves toward the surface and the sky. However, there are too many stories of the Otherworld that depict it with skies of its own, far from subterranean caverns and underwater dominions. So we look instead to tales where folk have journeyed there. In some versions it is reached by entering ancient burial mounds or caves, by journeying through a mist, by going under water, or by traveling across the sea for three days on an enchanted boat or Manannán's horse. Other tales tell of a path of gold created by the sun that led over the sea so that travelers could go “far over the green meadows of the waters where the horses of Lir have their pastures.” Ah, but I am ignoring an important point. The Sidhe have another name. Sometimes they are called Fairy Forts, a name which they share with many Stone Circles, Ring Forts (circular earth rings where wooden structures were once built) , and Hill Forts. Such places, long forgotten by those who built them, were thought to be haunted by the Faerie Folk, or enchanted by Druids. Most people avoided them if they could, preferring not to risk meeting with some supernatural entity who might be defending it. (In Ireland, these hill and ring forts were sometimes called “Raths”, once again referring to an earthen mound.) Some other structures share the idea of being haunted or the dwelling place of the supernatural. Court Cairns are large megalithic tombs. Some of the very oldest of these consisted of a single central chamber surrounded by standing stones (Dolmens). As time went on more intricate patterns are included. Passages of earth and stone, courtyards, burial chambers, and multiple courtyards connected to different burial chambers but all under the same hill. Much of Celtic tradition is derived from a combination of Irish Mythology, Scottish Mythology, and Germanic Mythology (Which is comprised of several other categories itself). But the idea of a hill under which the Faeries seemed to dwell or at least go to was a strong one. Though it is Germanic in origin, I want you to consider the tale of “Die zertanzten Schuhe“ (The Worn out Dancing Shoes). More commonly known as the Twelve Dancing Princesses. A story that depicts a soldier following princesses down into a secret world beneath their castle in order to discover the secret of their royal dancing slippers which are worn to pieces each morning. There he encounters trees with leaves of silver and gold, a vast lake or sea, and an island with magical servants and music for dancing. The nature of this story is vague, and every telling changes things. Were the princesses enchanted? Or the enchanters themselves? Did they act against their own wishes? Were they enticed into some trap? Or did they seek to trap others and were bound only when their secret was revealed? Even the details of the mysterious land beneath changes with each story. But one theme remains consistent. The Journey through the Underworld. One of the most consistent and reoccurring ideas in folklore that concerns WHERE the supernatural dwells when not dealing with humanity is the Journey to reach it. Whether the abode of the dead, the home of a magical race of beings, or something else entirely, the Underworld is often depicted as a place where one journeys into and sometimes through to reach the goal. A place of challenges, a place where the strange and wondrous hold more sway than the ordinary world above. Sometimes leading to a place which is also underground, or to another world entirely, the Journey is again a theme present in these old Irish tales. Not in every case, but often enough that it is noticeable. Of course, what of the stories where the Faerie abode is directly beneath the actual hill? Well there is a journey in such stories as well, though it is much more cleverly hidden. It encompasses the trip to first find the way into the Faerie Hill, and then the efforts to find the way back out again with whatever they have gained, hopefully with life, mind, and freedom still intact. Now, while many count Celtic Myths as a whole encompassing thing, it’s really more of a movement that takes bits and pieces from many different groups. For example, Seelie and Unseelie as Faerie Courts is an idea that comes from the Scottish Myths. But nowadays it has bled into other ideas such as the different groups of people present in the Norse Myths and the Faerie Hunt from later Germanic Folklore. The idea of a people or court of supernatural persons has always been drifting here and there in our oldest stories, but the idea of a grand Faerie court has certainly taken root as the fantasy genres explored the ideas. I think, in this particular case, if you wish to keep the name, you might call the entrances themselves, the hills and holes and burrows, the Sidhe. The Mounds. And give to the realm in which the Folk dwell a different name. If you fear it might be too much of a risk, then there are plenty of ways you might go about coming up with a name for your otherworld. Perhaps, like myself, you might spend time developing the beliefs and traditions of the people in order to build a cultural understanding of their own home, and then create the name based upon that. But you might just as easily use other methods. Create the name based upon what sounds pleasant, or by constructing a word from roots, prefixes, suffixes and parts of other language systems. Perhaps if you truly aspire to the Tolkien method, you might even create your own language and name the place in that language (I don’t necessarily recommend this method, by the way. Tolkien was a trained Philologist and had experience creating numerous languages already). There are a great many ways you could name a place in your story, drawing from existing mythology or stories, crafting an entirely new name, or even a mixture of both. I think that in most cases, if you choose to draw from existing myths and folklore, you ought to be fine as long as you do your proper research on the matter, check and recheck your resources thoroughly, and show the cultures you borrowed from the respect they deserve when you use names that come from their stories.

told you I was gonna come with a new request! =D mind doing another Scarabia, along with a Diasmonia one? The reader has the same kind of past as the one in the last request, but I just wanna see how you would write it in their perspectives. You can make them into one or separate stories, it doesn't matter to me so go ahead and go all out! Oh and if you can make a added part where it was near the time when they found a way to get home, that would be great, thanks so much! =D
Thanks for the requests @sanata101!! I’ll do my best!
Warnings: mentioned abuse and self harm (please love yourself), language, toxic behavior. If sensitive, please do not read!
A Sweet Melody (Diasomnia)
Normally, Yuu would’ve found herself anywhere but here.
The night hadn’t sat well in her gut, long since given the opportunity of relief from its seemingly endless feast upon itself, and as such, Yuu couldn’t manage even a wink of sleep. She was somewhat jealous of Grim, who snored soundly, lost in his sea of slumber. She couldn’t help but envy that he had nothing to prod at his consciousness in the late hours, nothing to worry himself over, or remember.
So, quietly as she could, Yuu snuck away from Ramshackle, and into the brisk wind that whipped at her hair and chilled her skin, still clad in her sleepwear. She wasn’t sure exactly where she planned to go, all she knew was that she sought a way to remove the worm that had been planted too firmly in her ear.
Her skin crawled with nolstalgia, eye tingling with the reminder of the glass that had so cruelly sliced away half her world. She’d merely been a child when her father lashed out one night, stealing a part of Yuu that she could never replace, and as time ticked forward, she did as well.
It came as a shock to her when she found herself standing in the illusive Mirror Chamber of Night Raven College. Of all places to go, she chose here? Yuu had only been brought into the area a scarce few times before, and not of her own accord, having been forced by a too excited Grim to check it out. She wanted to excuse herself, to speed away from the decision that lay in front of her, but the way it bent and warped before her very eyes kept her grounded, the magic visible even beneath a blanket of water.
Yuu shakily reached towards the Dark Mirror, only stopped by the tear that dripped down her cheek. “How could I...? After everything that happened... how could I go back..?!” She thought, clenching her fists as she withdrew her hand. “I shouldn’t be here.” She turned on her heel, tramping back to her rundown dorm, all the while pressing her palms to her head in order to squeeze out the memories that brought a pounding headache along with them.
When she creaked the door to her room open, Yuu suppressed her sigh, finding that Grim was still sound asleep. She tucked herself back into the dense warmth of her bed, grimacing at how the little monster barely even stirred as she lifted him up to make herself comfortable. Her eyes fluttered shut, a finger tracing over her damaged lid with a feather light touch. Ever since that day, Yuu hadn’t had a single peaceful night, any small bump or whistle in the wind causing her to jump to alertness.
A long while later, her consciousness gave way, allowing itself to sink into oblivion.
<————>
Sirens, water, blood.
To Yuu, that was the only thing she could remember clearly, like a movie playing too vividly in her overactive head.
Sirens; the blues, yellow, and reds that flooded the house as the ear piercing screams signalled the arrival of the emergency vehicles. The sound kept her awake night after night, plaguing her dreams that soon flitted away altogether. It sounded like—like the shrieks of her sister, of her mother, the last that their voices would ever create.
Water; streaming down her windows as she sat broken at the sills, stuck in a home that had long since been referred to as such. It wasn’t a home, it was her prison. It carved paths down her young cheeks, one horribly marred by the hand of someone she once held dear to her heart, the only constant that could be relied upon.
And blood; there was always so much of it. Pooling on the white tile flooring, staining the sheets, dripping over mounds of muscle. It was hers that was spilled first, and soon, it was of her sister and mother’s. Long after that blood had been washed away, Yuu often found herself holed up in the bathroom, dragging new trails across her skin with anything she could, whether that be a blade, or a dirty shard of glass.
She couldn’t seem to climb the boulder of self doubt and blame, never gaining an inch before it grew, scheming new reasons as to why she’d never amount to anything more than a guilty murderer.
Yes, that was what her father used to call her. A murderer.
“It wasn’t my fault...right? It wasn’t me!” Yuu screamed to no one in particular, staring at her hands.
“Oh, but it was these hands that led to their demise, wasn’t it?” A deep voice grumbled, grotesque like nails on a chalkboard. “It was you who made that—that noise you were so insistent on creating. Always with that damn harp, strumming away like everything was fine. Look around Yuu! Does everything seem fine?!” Her father growled, and suddenly, Yuu was no longer in the black of her subconscious, rather in that kitchen that reeked of death.
“I j-just... I wanted to make you happy... I was never enough! I just wanted to be enough for you!”
“For him? What about us? Did you forget about me, Yuu?” Her sister cooed, standing in front of her, battered and bruised.
“Did you forget what you did to us? If it weren’t for you, we’d still be alive!” Her mother joined, the family finally complete in all its broken glory.
“I-I’m sorry—I’m so, so sorry! I never meant for this, you know I never—“ Yuu dropped to her knees, clutching her head.
“You can’t hide from your past! You can’t hide from what you caused!” The bleeding mother wailed, each syllable sharp as a prick from a needle.
“You’ll always be a filthy murderer!” They said in unison, Yuu shooting her head up with panic striken tears clouding her half view.
“Take the punishment you deserve!” Her father boomed, raising his hand above his head, a bottle clenched tightly in the meaty fingers.
Yuu could do nothing but throw her arms over her face as the weapon was swung with deadly precision, racing faster and faster on its fatal track until—!
<————>
Yuu screamed as she jerked awake, sweat beads trickling down the sides of her face as she twisted her fingers in the sheets that stifled her with too much heat.
“Yuu? What’s all the noise ‘bout...?” Grim whined, rolling over and peeking an eye open.
She sucked in a shaky breath, raking a hand through her hair. “I-I... I think I–I need a w-walk. Yeah, a walk. Go b-back to sleep, I’ll be back in a little bit.” Yuu said, voice quivering worse than a dead leaf in the wind.
“Are ya sure? You don’t sound like you’re—“
“I’m fine! I just need to get some fresh air, that’s all. See you soon, Grim.” She intervened, giving him no time to respond as she lifted herself from the bed, practically racing out the door without so much as a coat.
The silent night was of little calm to the distressed girl, her bare feet slapping against the cold stone paving the path she walked over. Even as she wove further and further from the dorm house, and away from the dim light provided from the lit lanterns positioned haphazardly around the place, her wire thin thoughts didn’t allow her to notice the guest she entertained as she relived her nightmare.
That was the first vision she’d seen after clocking out in a long, long time. So long, in fact, Yuu had begun to believe that she was incapable of dreaming. The marks over her wrists and thighs tingled, none so uncomfortably as the scar blemishing her face. Out of habit, she hid it beneath a sweaty hand, wishing for the umpteenth time that some magic power would wash away the record of her father’s woes. Of her own failures.
A harsh wind whipped at her hair, rustling through her already thin clothing and sinking ice into her bones as a shiver crawled over her skin. Yuu pulled her arms across her body, hands rubbing her arms as she attempted to create even an inkling of warmth over the deprived flesh. Only now did she notice how far she’d wandered from...the only place she could call home in her twisted wonderland.
“Did you come with a plan for the chill, or are you just a fool?”
Yuu nearly tripped over her feet as she spun, ignited by the hyperactive moon. “Ts-Tsunataro!” She called, startled the appearance of the towering faerie. “H-How long have you been out here? Were you following me?”
“Ah, mortals and all of their insistent questioning,” he chuckled, horns glinting in the moonlight, “no matter. Please, cover yourself with this. You’ll catch your death if you remain dressed that way in this weather.” He shrugged off his blazer, largely oversized for Yuu’s frame.
“A-Ah... of course.” She extended her hand to grab the covering. Just as she was about to pull her second arm through the sleeve, a gloved hand gently took her arm, keeping her from completing the simple act. She kept silent as Tsunataro rotated it to expose the underside, pale and littered in thin ladders of scars.
His eyes widened a fraction of an inch, and he reached out for the other arm, only to have it pulled away by Yuu, who hid herself behind a curtain of hair. “...Why? Why would you do this to yourself?” He asked, and if Yuu didn’t know any better, she would’ve believed that the confusion held in his voice was genuine.
“You wouldn’t understand...” she replied weakly. “...the things I’ve done, the people I’ve hurt. I’m as ugly on the inside as am out, I don’t deserve anything more than the dirt on the soles of my shoes.”
The dark haired man froze, still as a statue as he processed the words, her arm still gently gripped in his large hand. Yuu stared at the smooth cement, at her pale feet in the too bright light, refusing to meet his eye.
And, each action executed with an elegance Yuu could never hope to possess, Tsunataro took her other arm, his hands sliding down to envelope hers as he kneeled, only somewhat shorter than she was standing. “I’ve seen many a peculiar incident in my lifetime, some so bizarre they seem impossible, but this my dear, is unbelievably false. You need not hide your face, for such a work of art cannot be praised unless the light frames its beauty.” He released a hand to cup her cheek, tilting her head to sweep away the bangs and reveal her teary eyes.
“Y-You... you shouldn’t lie, not for me. There’s no truth in anything you say...!” She sobbed, making no movements to wipe away her liquid sorrow.
“Once again, undeniably false. It astounds me to see that you fail to notice the perfection you carry within your mere existence. I’ve seen maidens from near and far, all come to win my hand, but never someone as fair as you. You may bear a past laced and threaded with horrors only few are opportune to see, and you may bear the scars and bruises from the times when you fell. But, the very fact that you stand here before me today, bathed in the light of the moon and glittering like a star, is the proof that you not only fell, but you rose to become something greater. I see no truer beauty than that, Yuu.”
The girl was silent, a cascading waterfall dripping to the pavement as she stared at the kneeled man, for once unashamed to show her face in its entirety. She could voice no words as she weeped, falling to her knees as well as pressing herself into the bigger body, hands clasping the fabric of his chest as she buried herself under his chin.
Malleus Draconia was for once at a loss for a plan. So, hesitantly, he wrapped his arms around the trembling girl, tracing lines up and down her back to soothe her cries. “I-II just...I d-don’t want to be a-alone anymore!” She screamed, voice cracking like the glass of his heart.
“Shh, you don’t have to be. I know what it’s like to take the hard road with no one to guide you, believe me, I know. But you don’t have to be. Tomorrow, look for the people wearing these colors. They will be the ones to keep you company while I cannot.” Malleus instructed, gesturing to his green-and-black armband.
“T-They...will?”
“Yes, I promise it.”
“T-That sounds...nice. Thank y-you, Tsunataro.” Yuu whispered, her cries reduced to pitiful hiccups.
“Whatever you require, my dear. Now, hush, and close your eyes. You must be incredibly worn out.” She listened, noticing how she was, indeed, exhausted. She barely recognized as she was lifted bridal style, a fuzzy feeling raising goosebumps along her flesh as she snuggled closer to the warmth radiating from her savior.
The world faded away, one sense at a time, until the thankfully dreamless slumber rewelcomed Yuu, sweeping her away to a world where naught mattered but the darkness and its tantalizing hand.
<————>
The cafeteria chatter greeted Yuu’s ears as the smell of all sorts of foods mingled in the air.
She stepped into the bustling room, dodging students as she held Grim in her arms, looking down to the band that was tied around her wrist. After she had awoken, she wanted to believe that the encounter the night before had been some crazy dream her mind had conjured up, but was proven wrong by a lime-and-black colored ribbon tied loosely around her wrist, reminding Yuu of the promise that had been sworn.
“Do you see them, Yuu? I just want to get food already...” Grim pouted, crossing his arms.
“N-No, I don’t... I thought Tsunataro said they’d be here...” she faltered, standing on her toes to try and glimpse around the taller students around her.
She jumped slightly, trying to locate the colors that should’ve normally stuck out like a sore thumb. She was so focused, that Yuu nearly tripped over herself when her vision was blocked by two red eyes dancing with amusement. “Woah—! W-who are you?” She stammered, leaping back a step.
She stared a little too intensely, intrigued by how the boy was quite literally hanging upside down in midair, his black and magenta streaked hair falling around his face as he chuckled, uprighting himself and sinking to the floor. On instinct, her gaze was quickly diverted downwards as she tilted her face away from his, hiding her scarring. “Kufufu, relax, young one. I’m Lilia Vanrouge, the proud vice of Diasomnia dorm. You don’t need to hide your face, I know who you are.”
Yuu looked up, seeing nothing but his gentle smile as her tense shoulders slumped, continuing to shadow her eye as Grim stirred in her embrace. “Fgna?! Aren’t you the guy we saw before Leona’s crazy beast mode during the Magift championships?” The monster exclaimed, so restless he nearly fell from Yuu’s hold.
“Hm? Oh, I guess that is true. Commendable job on handling that, by the way.” Lilia congratulated, clapping his hands as he smiled. “Now, I heard from a certain someone that you were in need of companionship, correct?”
“U-Uh, you mean this?” She held up her ribbon. “I s-suppose that’s right...”
“Fufu, no need to be so timid. Come, I’ll lead the way.” Lilia waved his hand, gesturing for her to follow as he disappeared within the crowd.
“I guess it can’t get any worse...” She thought, quickly trailing after the shorter senior.
It didn’t take long for the two to arrive at a rowdy table, Lilia bowing teasingly as she stood, a sweat drop almost visible on her forehead. “Silver! You cannot sleep in the cafeteria! You’ve already woken for the day, what if the young master requires our assistance?!” A boy with pale green hair yelled, gripping someone with chin length grey hair and shaking the life from him.
“Sebek, quite down... you’ll disturb the peace.” He yawned, pushing himself away from the green haired boy.
The latter gasped dramatically, fists clenching as he lifted them into the air. “You dare order me around?! Why I ought to—!”
“Ahem. Sebek, Silver, would you like to explain or shall I turn yet another blind eye to this?” Lilia coughed, staring blankly.
“Lilia-san!” The two instantly straightened out, Sebek’s temper cooling as Silver rose to alertness. “Apologies, Lilia-san. We weren’t aware of the...guests.” Silver bowed his head, completely oblivious to the hot glare Grim sent his way.
“By all mighty... in all my years of teaching you two, have you not learned a thing about manners? Introduce yourselves!” Lilia scolded, wagging a gloved finger in the air as Yuu took her spot at the table.
“R-Right! I’m Sebek Zigvolt, first year Diasomnia student. Very nice to meet you.” Yuu nodded respectfully, fidgeting with Grim’s tattered tie.
“...Silver, second year from Diasomnia, as well. Sorry for the mess you had to see before.”
“I-It’s alright... I’m Yuu, though I’m s-sure you already knew that...” she mumbled, Grim seated on her lap as she ran a hand over her eye absentmindedly. She was only torn from her meddling as silence wrapped around the table, something that from her short time of sitting with the group, Yuu could tell was uncommon. When she looked up, she felt her ears redden to find that both Silver and Sebek were staring at her, sharing unreadable expressions.
“I-Is something the matter?” She asked, a knot tying in her throat.
“N-No! Nothing at all!” Sebek refuted, shaking his head from side to side.
“No offense or anything, but why are you here?” Silver asked matter-of-factly, Yuu flinching at the tone.
“A-Ah, w-well...I—“
“Ms. Yuu here has been awfully lonely, as most of the students avoid her like the plague, the terrible oafs. So, as said by our dear lord, we shall be the ones to provide her company!” Lilia revealed, once again clapping in his oversized sleeves as he took a seat next to the girl.
“What?! Lilia, you do realize she has no magical powers whatsoever, correct? How could we bring her under our wing when—“ Sebek’s outraged voice trailed off as Yuu felt tears sting her eyes.
It was the same thing everyone always said. She wasn’t enough, she was never enough.
“I-I’m so sorry, I should just leave...! I-I’m sorry to have taken your time like this.” She stood to go, breathless as she held back sobs. She was about to storm away, off to her first class, when someone snagged her wrist, keeping her from running.
“Wait! Please, wait Yuu.” Lilia called, taking both her hands similarly to the way Malleus did the night before.
“Why...? I-I don’t want to bother a-anyone, I’m sure just associating yourself with someone like me tarnishes your reputation!” Yuu argued, Grim holding onto her leg protectively.
“No, no no. Don’t speak like that. Reputation be damned, I say. Why does it matter what anyone else thinks? Come back, I know those two are a little hectic, but I promise you, once you get through their walls, they’ll be there for you through thick and thin. Just... give it a chance, alright? Do you think you can try that for me?” He asked softly, the busy cafeteria blind to the exchange.
“I...” Yuu took a deep breath, steadying her shaking voice. “I don’t know what I can promise you, but I can try.” She said, earning a cheeky grin in response.
“Come on, let’s go back.” Lilia smiled, letting go of one of her hands to pull her back towards the table.
As soon as the dramatic first year noticed the pair heading back over, he stood, easier to read than a book with the emotions spilt across his face.
“Lady Yuu! I deeply apologize for my previous words, it was wrong of me to speak that way.” Sebek near shouted as Yuu sat back down.
“I-It’s alright... really. Right, Grim?” Yuu noddd, her tears having soaked back to the dam behind her eyes.
“Grr... You knucklehead better watch that tongue of yours from now on! Got it?” He growled, shooting daggers at the much bigger student.
“Oh, don’t worry about him. He may be emotional and dramatic, but unfortunately, he’s not an idiot. It won’t happen again...” Silver added before Sebek could reply, yawning as he stretched his arms over his head.
“Silver!” Sebek yelled, slamming his palms on the table.
As the antics continued, and the clock ticked by, Yuu found herself enjoying the jumbled company more than she thought. Her mind was steered away from the reminder of her horrid past, and for the first time since the accident, she forgot about the cicatrice that had disfigured her complexion. And, perhaps best of all, she found herself creating small giggles she had no idea she was still capable of making.
<————>
When the bell tolled the end of breakfast and the beginning of the first class, she was pleasantly surprised when Sebek walked her to the room, finding that they shared the period, as well as many others. Throughout the day, she reunited with Silver and Lilia, whether it be at lunch, or in the never halting progression of her magic filled classes.
Each of them comforted Yuu in their own way; for Lilia, it was through kind words and subtle encouragement. Everytime he notice her falling into the abyss of her thousand pound thoughts, he whispered her sweet nothings, taking her hand and giving it a light squeeze to let her know that she had someone to rely on.
For Silver, it was through soft touches and physical reminders. Whenever they shared a period together, he’d often doze off, slumping onto her shoulder and using it as a pillow. The few times he managed to stay awake, he would smile and use his pen to scribble little pictures and doodles in the corners of her assignments, to which Yuu would grin and return the favor.
For Sebek, it was through firm support and voiced praise. Applauding her when she answered questions correctly, cheering when she rode her broom properly in P.E, he was there to congratulate her on the smallest of things. He even offered to personally escort her to each classroom, guaranteeing that she wouldn’t be messed with by any of the students who dared poke fun at her outward appearance.
By the time the last bell of the school day reverberated off the intricately designed walls, Yuu had to press her cool hands to her eyes to slow the rise of water pooling in the sparkling orbs. It was too much—they were too much. It was all—all too similar to the way her... her family used to be! She didn’t want to lose anyone again, didn’t want to place her trust in those who didn’t deserve it! She’d failed to protect what she loved most once before, and she’d be struck dead before it happened again. Every beating she took, every meal she sacrificed, and for what? So that she would just lose it all in the blink of an eye?
What if... what if they left her too?
What if she was being used, again—
“...uu. Yuu. Hello? Anyone in there?”
The girl in question looked up, startled by the voice. “...Huh...? Silver?” She gasped, noticing how Grim was missing as the grey haired boy laughed inaudibly.
“Sleeping in class is my thing, you doofus. C’mon, I have something I want to show you.” He extended a hand, Yuu taking it after a minute of consideration.
“Where are we go—woah!” She yelped as she was dragged by the agile Diasomnia student, zipping through the halls in a blur of color as the speed brought a grin to her lips.
It wasn’t much, but the wind in her hair and the temporary high of running was enough to spike her adrenaline, in the kind of way that was addicting as opposed to way driven entirely off of fear.
All too soon, Yuu was brought to a complete stop, only caught from tripping by Silver’s sturdy grip. “Huff... w-was the running... necessary?” She panted, regaining her composure.
“Shh... look.” Silver simply instructed pointing.
Yuu followed the direction, and felt her heart burst with adoration at the scene unraveling before her.
Standing at the edge of the courtyard, Yuu stared with nary a trace of malice in her gaze as there, laid against the apple tree, Malleus slept silently, the only sign that he was even alive being the calming breaths that heaved through his chest. Yuu covered her mouth, turning away the laughter that threatened to spill from her pink lips.
Little animals were all over the great fae.
Birds decorated his horns, in a variety of blues and reds and yellows, while critters splayed themselves out over his lap, sandy brown chipmunks and greyed squirrels quarreling over tree nuts nearby.
“Is this an everyday occurrence for Tsunataro?” Yuu thought, stepping into the courtyard.
Silver followed after her, and once she took a seat by the slumbering boy, Silver gave her a little nod before stretching out over the wooden bench, basking in the late afternoon sun that made his hair shine like a newly polished sword.
Reaching out, she gingerly brushed away a few locks of ebony hair, scaring a few of the animals away. Malleus stirred, eyes fluttering open sleepily as he shook off the rest of the little creatures. “Hello...” Yuu cooed, withdrawing her hand and placing it on her lap as she sat on her knees.
“What a shame, really. Lordy here never gets a full night’s rest anymore, always staring at the moon like a love struck puppy dog.” Yuu shifted, falling back onto her hands as the enigmatic vice yet again dropped upside down in front of her.
“L-Lilia? How long have you been here?” She asked, crossing her arms.
“A while. I was the one who told Silver to get you, right, my boy?” Lilia smirked, cackling as Silver grunted and sent a thumbs-up as his approval.
“I’m sorry to wake you, if that is the case the—“
“Young master!” Came the familiar cry of Sebek, who practically raced over to the bench where Silver sat. “I’ve been looking everywhere! You can’t just disappear like that, you’ll put yourself in danger!”
“Oh hush now, Sebek. You’ll scare the doves.” Malleus yawned, exposing his sharp canines for a brief second.
“The doves aren’t anything to be concerned with right now... ah! Hello, Yuu! Apologies for failing to notice your presence sooner!” The green haired guard said with just a touch too much emotion to seem genuine.
“H-Hi...?” She waved timidly, a small but identifiable smile on her lips.
“My dear, I’m deeply sorry for only now making an appearance. Just as the day and night chase each other in a never ending cycle of time, my identity comes and goes. During school hours, I’m needed elsewhere.” Malleus said, Lilia having wandered off to pester Sebek and Silver.
“It’s alright, I figured there’s more than just me to entertain in your life,” Yuu shrugged, smoothing out her clothes.
“Fufu, indeed. Tell me—at the very least, did they behave?”
Yuu watched as the three goofed off, carefree chatter and laughs floating about the courtyard. “Well... Sebek is loud, and sometimes a little overwhelming. Silver is always sleeping, and doesn’t have a very strong attention span. And Lilia... he’s unpredictable, hopping left and right without so much as a plan to fall back to.” Yuu admitted, a pleasant breeze sweeping through her hair.
“Is that so?”
“Yes, but... it’s not all bad. They all—they all remind me so much of my family...!” Yuu felt her voice crack as her tears returned yet again. “Silver—ha, Silver reminds me of my sister! She was so young, and...and she loved to draw. She would always doodle little pictures on my papers, and I’d always get so mad at her for it...” she wiped away the fat beads, sniffling.
“What about Lilia?” Malleus prodded, urging her to continue.
“Lilia-san reminds me of my mother. His smile, the way he quietly encouraged me when I felt like I wasn’t enough... I haven’t felt her embrace in so long, I often find myself wondering if she was real at all!”
“And... Sebek?”
“Sebek? He... well, he reminds me of—of my... my father. Before he is who he is now. I can barely remember it, but I know for a fact that he used to cheer for me whenever I got full marks on a test. I know he used to patch up my bumps and scrapes, he wasn’t always the man who... who sat around drowning himself in liquor!” The tears were so thick, Yuu couldn’t see more than a blurred mess as she hiccuped, rubbing over her scar.
“Yuu. Come here.” Malleus opened his arms. An invitation, to which Yuu wordlessly accepted by flinging herself into him, sobbing her heart onto his uniform, tears dampening the fabric.
“I don’t...! I don’t want to go back! I don’t care that Crowley found a way to get me home! I can’t go back!” She lamented, feeling Malleus tense below her.
“He...what?” It was clear that no one had been aware of this turn events, no one besides the headmaster of Night Raven and Yuu herself.
“Please... I don’t want to go back to a place where I’m not loved. To a place where I’ll forever be subjected to... to ridicule, and mockery. Please, please don’t let me leave.” Yuu begged, unaware of the crowd she had gathered.
Silver and Sebek stood dumbfounded, both gaping as Lilia watched speechless, a dark look shadowing his normally mischievous face.
In that moment, all four boys made a choice. They made the choice of compassion.
Malleus crushed Yuu in a hug, a hand over the back of her head as he pulled her flush against himself. “Shh. You don’t have to leave. You’ll stay with us. You’ll stay here, where you’re safe, and you don’t have to hide anymore.” Malleus promised, dropping the embrace to look Yuu in the eyes, absorbing all of her fractured beauty.
“I... can stay?”
“Dearest, remain here, with us. You never have to be scared again. Not ever.”
Yuu pried herself away from the broad fae, sitting on her knees and for the first time, seeing a picture so clearly, it was as if her vision returned to her after all this time.
She saw the faces of her family in them. She saw the innocent bliss of her sister, the serenity of her mother’s forgiveness, and the pride of her father. She saw the acceptance, the realization that this was now her family.
No more blood. No more tears.
She had a place she could call home, and it wasn’t even a place. It was in the arms of these four people.
Yuu had finally found her lost melody.
Holy wow, I am so, so sorry that this took so long to finish! I’m still working on the Scarabia duo, so keep an eye out for that!
I hope you enjoyed, and once again, thanks for reading!!
Stay lovely!
