Note
With gore and such in horror movies, particularly where the victims are women, where do you typically draw the line between genuine horror and just torture porn? I've seen a lot of debate about the Terrifier franchise in light of the new one - I've not seen any of the movies, and I'm also not super well-versed in horror film in general. What do you consider gore/slashers done well?
this is going to be long and a tangent. apologies ahead of time.
1 - i rarely, if ever, use the term "torture porn." i think it's a means of classifying movies that needs to be retired.
this is not a criticism of you, just to be clear. it's just that:
i have seen people apply it to fantastic movies solely because they disapprove of/dislike gore. this unfairly maligns films while perpetuating the idea that violence is always cheap, tasteless, and without purpose or meaning.
i have also seen it used to frame horror fans as twisted "degenerates," which is very ugly when you consider horror is often used to challenge societal norms, and many horror fans are marginalized people. additionally, liking gory movies =/= approving of real violence or being turned on by it.
on the flip side, using it as a classification can also lead people to overlook issues present in many horror movies. calling Cannibal Holocaust, for example, "torture porn" is reductive in its own way. it ends the conversation. it says, "this was bad because it was shallow violence," when, in reality, it is so much worse than that as a deeply racist and misogynistic piece of media that exploited indigenous people and facilitated real animal abuse.
2 - i can't really draw any kind of universal line. the necessity of gore is a film-by-film issue. rather than asking, "is this movie too violent," i typically ask "why does this movie feature graphic violence? what does it do with it?"
graphic violence can be:
used to portray horrific historical events honestly (ex: Come and See),
used to drive home points about violence, those who perform it, and/or those who endure it (ex: Pan's Labyrinth, Lady Vengeance)
used to evoke strong emotions from shock and disgust to grief and rage in audiences (ex: Oldboy, The Sadness)
exaggerated for comedic effect (ex: Evil Dead II)
and/or implemented solely to show off impressive effects work and artistry (ex: Terrifier 2).
3 - women being victims of violence in horror movies is not inherently misogynistic. i'm not saying you're implying this, just pointing out that this is a fact worth keeping in mind. i've seen people act like violence is inherently anti-woman solely because it's happening to a female character, which is ridiculous.
i can also personally watch movies with problematic elements, like misogyny, if i enjoy other aspects of them. what matters is that i consume them critically.
4 - i do want to clarify that i dislike Terrifier. i find its plot shallow and most of the performances bad. it's just a vehicle for violence that, imo, is far too directed at women. it left a bad taste in my mouth.
at the same time, i enjoyed Terrifier 2, which i thought was flawed but sincerely funny with a great villain and some awesome special effects. (even then, there is an overly-long torture scene that i found weirdly mean-spirited and uncomfortable to watch as a woman).
5 - i'm not the best person to ask about slashers! i like some but it's far from my favorite sub-genre. off the top of my head, some good proto-slashers are:
The Virgin Spring (1960)
Psycho (1960)
Blood and Black Lace (1964)
and some good slashers are:
Straw Dogs (1971)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Deep Red (1975)
Alice, Sweet Alice (1976)
Halloween (1978)
Opera (1987)
Scream (1996)
Inside (2007)
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Eden Lake (2008)
Midnight Meat Train (2008)
The Loved Ones (2009)
Dream Home (2010)
The Woman (2011)
Green Room (2015)
Don't Breathe (2016)
Hush (2016)
Revenge (2017)
Halloween (2018)
Darlin' (2019)
Pearl (2022)
as always, i recommend checking for trigger warnings before watching films.

Anyway I feel like the dbd devs may have had a lil peek at For Honor's sound effects library during that particular little tryst because I SWEAR I recognize the noises this dude makes on a very deep level

Tagged by @rivetgoth to do my URL as song titles! Like in an acrostic way. Hold on, because once I start talking about music it's hard for me to shut up!
B - "Breathe" by Night Sins - One of my favorites of theirs. The new single has reminded me that I was obsessed with them throughout 2022 and part of 2023. Their music is pretty derivative, in the best way -- many of their songs sound like they were perhaps based on certain classic goth-adjacent songs. This one makes me think of "This Time of Night" by New Order.
L - "Life Itself" by Glass Animals - We first heard this song live in 2016, maybe a week or two after it was released. The show was fantastic. Their second album hadn't come out just yet (let alone "Heat Waves"!) and so nearly all of the songs we heard were from their first album, which I WORE OUT in 2014. But this song made an immediate impression. Somehow everyone in the audience apart from us already knew all the words, lol. I remember hearing everyone sing along and asking Brock, "What is this song and how does everyone know it?" but dancing like an idiot anyway. Eight years later I'm still not tired of it.
A - "Atlas Air" by Massive Attack - I have been trying to convince people that this album (Heligoland) had good songs on it, and I've been using this as a prime example. It's a perfect slow burn at nearly eight minutes long. I love the Middle Eastern influences that echo the subject matter and the explosive payoff of the outro.
C - "Cowgirl" by Underworld - A club classic for a reason! I have other favorite Underworld songs nowadays, but this one always goes over really well on the dance floor. Another excellent slow burn. Such good vibes and everyone loves it. You probably know it from Hackers, lol.
K - "Komboloy" by A-Head - I guess this is an X Marks the Pedwalk side project? I've only ever heard it in clubs in OKC, but it's another one that always gets people on the dance floor. My best friend heard it in my car one time and said the vocalist "woke up and decided to sound like a monster from the Labyrinth." I can't deny it.
C - "Close (to the Edit)" by the Art of Noise - I will die on the hill of referring to this song as EBM, lol. I first heard this on VH1 Classic and mostly remembered it because of the weird video. Heard it at a club in Tulsa a few years ago and was reminded that the song is also super cool. Later I found out it was also huge in '80s breakdancing circles, which is interesting to me with all the car sputtering, chainsaw noises, and the heavier beat.
H - "Happy up Here" by Royksopp - This is what the inside of my head sounds like when I'm staring off into space.
A - "Alive in the Night" by Sacred Skin - I love how danceable this band is, which is why it's funny that this is my second favorite of their songs. It is not danceable. It's like a goth power pop ballad. But the chorus gives me major goosebumps and I'll be damned if I can resist singing along in the car. Has one of my favorite bridges, too!
N - "New Decision" by Manufacture - A new favorite! IT'S SO CATCHY. I want this to be a club hit, but alas, it's 33 years old and that has not happened yet to my knowledge. I only heard it because I heard a couple of songs by this band and decided on a whim to listen to their two albums. Synthpop from the '90s is so tragically overlooked.
T - "True Colours" by Kite - One of my spring 2022 songs which means it's sometimes a little hard to listen to -- I was in the middle of a major crisis at the time, and the song is sad enough as it is. But this is my favorite example of Kite's DENSE synthscapes and brooding vibes. Listen when you're feeling wistful but like in a depressed way, lol.
I - "Iris" by TR/ST - Actually my favorite song by them! Now that I think of it, it's not dissimilar to the last song as it has the really thick-sounding synths, slow pulsating beat, and kind of bittersweet vibe. I WILL attempt to dance to it if I hear it played out (which has happened exactly once) even though it's like 90 bpm.
L - "L'appel du Vide" by Actors - I generally like them, but this song in particular is SO catchy and upbeat despite the darker lyrics. It is always getting stuck in my head. When people ask for examples of good newer post-punk I usually direct them to this song in particular.
L - "Land of Rape and Honey" by Ministry - This is one I've passively liked for a while, but then one of our local DJs started playing it semi-regularly and I remembered it existed and how much I enjoyed it. I've been listening to it a lot this spring. This is slightly on the heavier side of what I would normally listen to, but I adore the mechanical beat and the creatively used string sample. Also I appreciate that it's clearly a dance song and not as rock-oriented as some of the other songs on this album.
Y - "Young" by the Soft Moon - Still really sad about this guy dying. What a loss for the goth/industrial scene. This was one of my very favorites on this album; it really showcased his fusion of the post-punk and industrial genres. The slow, menacing beat is really effective.
I don't usually tag people on these, so if you want to do it then consider yourself tagged!

Doom x Halo thoughts
Tumblr media
(Needed an excuse to post an image... this IS "official" art, right?)
Doom and Halo have some history "together", at least from the outside like people comparing them and all.
So MicroSoft owning Doom lead to people think of potential crossover and other things.
I feel like there's some stuff to think about, just because:
The fans (And some comparisons)
I'm sure everyone knows about older Doom fans insulting Halo fans for "picking the inferior game that ruined the genre".
But with how less popular Halo got over the years and the mainstream return of Doom, it seems things have changed where more likely the "older gamers" are those into Halo and the younger ones are those into modern Doom.
Doom fans also used to compare Master Chief to Doomguy, as if he was a copycat stealing someone else's throne when the 2 didn't have much in common besides "green space marine in revolutionary FPS series".
Let's see some basic differences at the time:
One has grey/white helmet, the other has green helmet.
One shows arms, the other doesn't.
One shows face (Even in the HUD), the other is faceless.
This is why 2016 was a bit special, because it somewhat broke those differences (And i guess the more advanced armor and an AI companion, no?).
But even Doom 2016 brought new unique elements to Doom to make it stand out, even if there's still arguements of how the series is comparable to Halo or other games.
So Eternal brought back the exposed arms and added a shoulder gun and arm blade but still kept the helmet green.
The existence of the Doomslayer can also be traced to outside factors and not just the comic book with "rip and tear" but even stuff like how people compared Doomguy to Chief, Death Battle, maybe some goofy webcomics or copypastas etc.
Doomslayer can be seen as a product of fanservice even if the comparisons to MC lead to a certain irony.
Some people also thought Halo Infinite was taking stuff from Doom Eternal like the grapple hook or even some character designs but it's clear that Halo still had energy swords first.
It's also worth mentioning that both Doomguy and Chief were treated as blank slates except MC was still a clear character who talked in the right moments (Though this again leads to differences between Bungie and 343) while Doomguy was "unfinished" enough to be carried by his fans (Hence "Doomguy").
Another thing is how both series have religious references but differently: Halo has its own lore/setting but has clever references to Christianity in it, whereas Doom came in the "Satanic Panic" era and was a goofy "heavy metal" premise (And how later games handled the setting also depends on how it affects this but still).
And if you recall the original Forerunner lore, even Eternal's lore for the Sentinel may have something to do with the idea of humanity's ascendents or something like that.
Either way, i'm sure some fans would prefer to see both series stand in their own, since Eternal didn't even explore some other parts of classic Doom's aesthetic.
Perhaps this is why i think not only Doomguy's helmet should remain white/grey but also that the Sentinel Crucible should have been an energy chainsaw at best instead of a sword.
Gameplay
Both franchises have their impacts in FPS games and in a way that makes fans see them as opposites.
Doom was the upgrade from Wolfenstein 3D that needed to happen to actually kick off the genre while Halo (And i suppose also Half-Life) led to a new version of the genre that mostly defined modern console gaming.
(Though it can also be seen as games copying popular titles when considering terms like "Doom clone" or "Halo killer")
With the FPS genre, we obviously know about later games and how they had their affects on it over time, while both Doom and Halo changed, whether it's to make them stand out or even fall under certain trends.
Despite Halo being somewhat responsible for FPS games after it, it actually suffered worse with the trends and copied the kind of games it inspired.
You can point out D3 having reloading, upgrade systems in later Doom's and a 2 weapon limit in D2016's multiplayer (Funny enough, this mode was done by the studio Certain Affinity, that worked on Halo and COD before) but the games still managed to stand out among other titles.
Even if people trace modern Doom to Painkiller but even then, the Painkiller or Serious Sam format wasn't as big as the "Halo killer" one.
This is also a result of MicroSoft wanting Halo to be their "Mario" even when Bungie wanted to move on, while 343 tries to be clever and to justify making new Halo games.
Bungie even used to have a line in the studio saying "we make games we want to play" and there's even stories of the original Halo's development where Bungie and MS were at fights over what was going to happen with the game.
While Doom was probably never meant to be a "franchise" (Specially with the existence of a new IP that is Quake and the wad/mod/source port scene) but titles like D64 still existed and D3 for better or worse was something else entirely (And D2016 basically existed as part of a ZeniMax contract and the cancelled D4 development but still turned out great).
"Within the genre" crossover
On one hand, it's neat that fighting game franchises from Capcom, SNK, Namco and some others mix up within their genre.
On another hand, you had situations where Mario and Sonic meet up at the Olympics because despite both being 2 titans in the landscape of platforming, they have a lot of gameplay differences that means it could be hard to mix them up.
Because i though it'd be fitting if Doom and Halo had a crossover in FPS format despite their differences (Even if you had to cherrypick specific elements).
Meanwhile, Quake Champions was the first time BJ, Doomguy and Ranger were in a game together but it also felt like QC wasn't aware of it (I mean, remember that Doomguy was announced through a tweet before they posted an actual video trailer).
And i know people will want something better than the two green soldiers simply showing up in Fortnite (Specially because the idea of these 2 interacting in particular is not intentional and besides, Fortnite's crossovers don't have the same feeling as something like certain fighting game crossovers or Smash).
I also think a crossover needs to portray a series in a way that feels respectable, like not just sticking to the latest entry in a series and getting creative with designs and so on.
Kinda like how Smash is notorious for its "Snake" being both Solid Snake and Big Boss.
Basically, think of something like MetaDoom as how Doom as a series could be portrayed.
Except Doom is a series that can (Or at least should) ignore lore while Halo always had a lore focus (That was eventually mismanaged).
A Doom mod called Halo: Doom Evolved attempts to merge both series and is a popular example.
Of course i'd use MetaDoom and Samsara as references but honestly, they're the best kind of fanservice.
(I think Halo also had its own "franchise mix up" mod being SPV3)
Story/lore
Perhaps a major difference between these 2 franchises is how they treated story/canon.
Doom's own story was always a mess and not taken seriously, with examples besides that one quote by John Carmack such as:
Lack of story and barely enough context.
Abstract levels and assets.
Contradicting information.
"Additional info" that is obscure and hard to look for.
Adaptations that deviate from the main setting such as the 2005 movie or older novels.
Different games might as well have different canons since D3 is clearly its own timeline.
The mere fact that concepts from the fanbase overlap with the series, be it a nickname like "Doomguy" or how anyone remembers an aspect of gameplay due to source ports.
Halo on the other hand always had a lore/universe, since a book even came before Combat Evolved and it's a series by the people that brought you Marathon.
Cutscenes, story segments, voice acting, lore... it was always there.
With this in mind, you'll understand why fans dislike 343's involvement on the series due to what they've done to the story and setting.
The most noticeable example being the Forerunners, since most of Bungie's games and material had clear hints of what they were going for.
But it's not even just retcons, there's always decisions that make no sense as if 343 is struggling to do something while trying to address fan responses.
343 Halo is also noticeably more story-heavy compared to Bungie.
And let's also not forget what they've done to Cortana (Which i believe is a case of someone looking at the concept of "rampancy" in the Marathon series and poorly copying it; Didn't Bungie themselves had ideas of making Cortana turn evil but they were dropped? Thought i heard that).
Modern Doom does focus on the idea of a universe with lore (Even if just for the sake of nerd appeal) but i also imagine that even the new id Software has second thoughts on some decisions.
It's why i think Doom works as a "blank canvas" where a certain game can simply do things differently just because.
But this "blank canvas" mentallity isn't the case with Halo, so how does one save its worldbuilding?
Well if that trainwreck of a TV show can deviate even further from Halo canon, anything should go including a return to glory... hopefully...
Still, it's clear Bungie intended to end Halo with 3 and 343 only kept the series going because it's essentially the Mario of the Xbox brand.
Art style/aesthetics differences
Both series went through visual changes as well.
Doom definitely "changed skin" more noticeably than Halo, but you'll find more Halo fans unhappy with visual changes than Doom fans.
Again, it's due to lore/story reasons since even the looks are key in the world building of Halo.
Bungie wanted to make Halo somewhat grounded while still sci-fi whereas 343 makes their designs way more detailed and "out of there", until Infinite tried to make it up and attempt to go back to a more familiar style.
There's even fanmade redesigns of 343 designs meant to make them more Bungie-like.
Doom's original art style was always messy and lead to fans have their own interpretations, even if i made a post trying to explain some aspects of it.
And most Doom games are different takes in the series, even if 2016/Eternal forms canon ties to the classic games.
You get the feeling that a Doom game after Eternal might as well play and look very differently but can still offer some stuff to enjoy and if you don't like it: The older games still have that modding legacy.
Meanwhile, it turns out that Kenneth Scott who worked on Quake 3 and Doom 3 (And apparently Hacx) also worked on Halo 4.
Then there's comments about which series is copying which one but i'm sure people will prefer that both stand out in their own hopefully.
If Doom and Halo start to have similarities, it might also be a certain revelation that modern games will have certain aesthetical trends and result in lots of comparisons.
Hell, the idea that companies could use AI art could even adhere to the fact that "sci-fi" and "fantasy" are just vague labels to companies and there's no such thing as more distinct styles or designs.
Samsara and mods
Speaking of FPS crossovers, Doom has its fair share of amazing unofficial ones like the "Smash of retro FPS" that is Samsara and even Quake 3's Generations Arena.
And then there's a franchise mix ups like MetaDoom.
Along with mods that add "original" stuff that extends the setting like Complex Doom and all those Realm667 adjacent projects.
But even Halo has stuff like SPV3 and Halo Legacies.
Sometimes, i feel like these projects could be good use of reference of "what the fans want" even if there's the danger of companies stealing from fans or going after fan projects.
Monopolies and the corporate side of things
There is reason to worry about MS owning more studios and companies.
I'm sure we all know about corporations controlling stuff people like and all.
At least Doom's source code is available and there's a lot fans can still do, but this doesn't apply to all Doom games.
MS had a history of originally buying Doom and then there's the history of the 95 Windows Doom port (And this can also tie to Direct X).
It'll also be strange seeing Xbox fanboys put Doom alongside Halo in their console war attitudes even when it contrasts the established subcultures set by older Doom fans (Not like Eternal didn't already have something like this).
Meanwhile, you also have the story of Bungie making games for Mac and Halo originally being a Mac game before MS bought Bungie and that may've lead to the Halo we know today.
Another thing is Doom's reputation of being a game with various ports in different machines (Officially and otherwise) while Halo is usually XBox and sometimes PC (Though there's the story of that cancelled Nintendo DS game i guess).
What else
How could i forget Marathon? Think of it as a middleground between Doom and Halo.
It's technically a "Doom clone" but it's also a predecessor to Halo.
Despite being a lore heavy series, it's also known for its limited presentation and abstraction.
I've already talked about what i think of the new announced Marathon game.
And the music?
Sure Doom has a lot of great music, (From Bobby, Hodges, Mick, Hulshult, Levy, TNT, Tweaker, even the 3DO port) but let's not forget: Halo had this and it rules:
youtube
Anyway, this post could've been a lot better but if a Youtuber ever makes a "let's talk about Doom and Halo" video, feel free to use this as reference or "food for thought".

The Chainsaw Man anime isn't good just because it's based on arguably the best battle manga of all time, though that is true.
It's not good just because it uses the medium of animation to do things Tatsuki Fujimoto could never have done in manga, though that is also true.
It's also good because of how it integrates CGI into its animation. In this way, it's trying to bring something new to the medium that elevates it beyond merely being a good adaptation of great source material.
And more importantly, Chainsaw Man is a perfect counterargument against people who act like CGI in anime is an automatic negative.
I'm only like 40% joking there. Those kinds of arguments—not always in such absolute terms, but generally used in ways that don't make sense with nuance—are annoyingly common. They are also very obviously wrong.
And yes, I've seen Berserk (2016), Gibiate, Handshakers, Ex-Arm, etc; more precisely, I've seen enough clips from those series to understand why those series are considered examples of butt-ugly CGI. And they are! But traditionally-animated series can also be butt-ugly in their own distinct way.
So far, when CGI has been incorporated into anime well, it's mostly been in ways that are either easy to overlook or easy to dismiss—not always bad or ugly (though some are), but at best good in different ways than traditional sakuga. You can't compare apples and oranges, which makes it hard to argue against apple fanboys who say oranges are always trash. Thus, anime CGI has broadly been held up to the Arc System Works standard—how hard is it to tell that it's not hand-drawn?
But Chainsaw Man's CGI isn't that. MAPPA's animators aren't trying to hide the fact that the titular...devil/human/dude is animated with CGI, or that many of the people around him are. If you know what to look for, the CGI is obvious. If you know what to look for, the traditional animation in the same frame is obvious.
But if you're being a medium nerd instead of a huge nerd—that is, if you're paying attention to the fight choreography and not little animation details—none of it feels out of place.
The CGI feels part of the same world as the traditionally-animated characters and as the backgrounds (which I'm not a colossal enough nerd to have been paying attention to). It's composited way better than the traditionally-animated characters and background of most older anime—not even the shittiest-anime-of-199X contenders, just the Sturgeon's Law bunch.
My hat's off to the compositing team at MAPPA who pulled all of this together. Also the animators, CGI and traditional, who made the assets that the compositors compiled. Also the VFX and SFX artists, the voice actors, the writers, musicians, directors, etc.
Spy×Family has some competition this season.

Mega’s Top 2022 Anime (and Manga)
Another year comes and goes, and with it another year of anime comes to a close. The number of shows I watched continues to decline. While at the same time I’m spending more time reading manga. There was a strong mix of anime originals and creative adaptations this year. Without further ado, here’s my annual top 5 anime of the year (and manga) list:
1) Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 Mob Psycho 100 has joined the short list of manga that got completely adapted into anime. While I wasn’t as into the season due to the passage of time, it ended on a very high note for me. The remaining plotlines landed in a good place, character arcs reached their resolution, and its message remained on point to the very end. I don’t have much more to add compared to what I wrote in 2016 and 2019. I hope it will be remembered as a classic from this time period. 2) Bocchi the Rock This was the most creative anime visually for me this year. Every single interaction is a struggle for Bocchi, and that is conveyed through each incident being depicted differently. It brings a lot of life to Bocchi’s personality as no two situations are quite the same for her. It’s also an uplifting show as she grows closer to her new found band friends. Bocchi the Rock was definitely the surprise hit of the year.
3) Spy x Family
As someone who has been reading the manga since it began, I had a feeling it would become a hit someday. The dynamic between Twilight (the spy with a thousand faces), Yor (assassin by night, office worker by day), and Anya (the all knowing psychic) makes for comedic and wholesome situations as they live together under the same roof. Next season will have the much anticipated Yor boat arc. There’s also a movie to look forward to. 4) Made in Abyss Season 2 If you thought season 1 and the movie was the most emotional it could be, well, the series still had more tricks up its sleeve. This season took us down another layer into the legendary Golden City. The story began with a previously unseen group of explorers who descended down to this level. I can’t even begin to describe the horrors they experienced. It was some of the cruelest material yet in the series and a stark reminder how the abyss is a place that rejects outsiders. Unfortunately it might be a long time before another season or movie gets made.  5) Chainsaw Man
This was one of the most anticipated anime of the year for a good reason. Tatsuki Fujimoto draws manga like nobody else in the shonen genre. I was worried how his cinematic yet deliberate panel work would translate to screen, and I can say Mappa did a respectable job. The content from here is where the series had me on the edge of my seat every week. I can’t wait to see Reze, the Gun Devil, and basically the entire second half animated.
Other series worth mentioning: Call of the Night, Dress Up Darling, Lycoris Recoil, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War Season 3 and Bleach The Thousand Year Blood War Part 1
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Biggest Disappointments of the Year: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6 - Turns out when you just adapt the manga panels to tv, it loses a lot of visual personality. Thankfully the story alone was enough to make it watchable. My greatest fear going into 2023 is a poor adaptation of Steel Ball Run on Netflix
Devil is a Part Timer season 2 - This was a long overdue sequel. In the time between seasons, I was able to read the entire light novel series. The books are a nice read. The anime however, looked terrible. Perhaps it was best to not adapt it again if that’s the best they could do. Save yourself and read the novels instead. It’s highly unlikely the anime will be able to adapt all 21 volumes anyways. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Best Openings/Ending of 2022: 1) Urusei Yatsura (2022) Opening - Fun opening and catchy song makes for a perfect match to a reboot of the classic manga 2) Spy x Family Ending 2 - It perfectly captures the peaceful life they enjoy during the day vs. their personal struggles in the shadows.  3) Call of the Night Opening - A simple yet stylized opening to convey how meeting the Vampire Nazuna is changing his life. 4) One Piece Opening 24 - Upbeat song and visuals to showcase the battles against the Tobi Roppo in this section of the story. I hope for a gear 5 animation update when the anime gets there. 5) Chainsaw Man Ending 4 - Among all of Chainsaw Man’s endings, #4 was my personal favorite. Who knew it was possible to show the chaotic yet fun energy of Power in 90 seconds. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next up, I’m adding a manga section for the first time. I read a lot of current titles and sometimes I try to check out older series that I missed. The number of legal manga services have started to take off in recent years.  Weekly Shonen Jump and Jump+ have a ton of anime on the schedule for 2023. Undead Unluck is one to watch for big hit potential (don’t let the early crudeness deter you, it matures very quickly), and maybe Mashle if the fights are well animated. Among new serializations, Akane Banashi is without a doubt the best new title of 2022. Its a Rakugo-battle manga that addresses both long standing sexism and the modernization vs. traditional debate within the art form. Takamasa Moue draws well detailed spreads to immerse readers in the world of the stories being told. This will be a big hit when it is eventually animated. Also a big shoutout to Ruri Dragon. I look forward to the day it comes back from hiatus. Speaking of hiatuses, Hunter x Hunter came back for another 10 chapter run this year. This time it devoted nearly every page to the Spiders and mafia plot on the lower levels of the ship. But overall, not a lot actually happened. The Phantom Troupe backstory was a nice treat for long time fans at least. I still don’t expect to ever see the end of this arc. Outside of Jump, Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister is a harem rom-com that I find very enjoyable with a good mix of supernatural antics and fun moments you’d expect in the genre. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is probably going to be one of the biggest anime in 2023. The manga tells the story of Ef who outlived her party. She now seeks to make new memories while learning the meaning of the little things in her previous journey. Its a story that puts everyday life moments into perspective.
Lastly for a few older titles I read this year:
Negima and UQ Holder - This is the kind of series that I would have been immensely into if I read it during its run. The rom-com elements are nice and all, but what truly sold me on the series is the fantasy adventure they have during the entire second half. Negima is one of the best at blending harem and battle troupes together. Unfortunately the sequel UQ Holder isn’t nearly as good. Poor pacing and incoherent plot held it down. At least it provided the final arc that Negima skipped at the end. I think it’s a series that has aged surprisingly well in this modern isekai era. Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer - I heard this was a fantastic title and... I thought it was boring. It’s not drawn particularly well, the story is a bit formulaic, and everything falls flat for me. It simply didn’t feel ambitious enough for the story it wanted to tell (and let us not go into the bland anime adaptation it received). I’ll get around to Satoshi Mizukami’s other titles eventually. Sun Ken Rock - Since Dr. Stone finished this year, I went back to read another Boichi work. I was really impressed by the Yazuka drama mixed with a non-Japan setting. I quickly learned Boichi sure tamed himself before coming to Jump while still always striving to improve his art. His already impressive spreads during Sun Ken Rock only become more detailed over time and throughout Dr. Stone. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look forward to the anime adaptations for several of my favorite manga in 2023 and can’t wait to discover new manga series. The year seems like it will be off to a promising start with JoJo Part 9 coming in February. A few big hitters from Weekly Shonen Jump are also likely to end. There are plenty of things to look forward to in the coming year.
See you all next time!

Kinda related to the other thing I was talking about:
The fact that I can’t differentiate canon and fanon like where’d my media literacy go
I’ll start it now off with some anecdotes that a lot of people can relate to probably and then get more obscure as we get on okay??
Common hcs that I forget aren’t real
- Thomas is bisexual (idk where this one even came from but everyone just accepted it)
- Abe listens to weezer (look at him!!)
- Craig isn’t Peruvian (white Craig fanart always throws me off)
- Kenny doesn’t have freckles or scars (he’d fit freckles and also I hc he’d get a scar every time he dies like a bullet shaped one or one on his head from the chainsaw)
- Mike isn’t trans??? (Genuinely everyone I’ve seen agrees with that one)
Okay now the more obscure ones and Mandela effects I’ve forced upon myself (might as well divide them into fandoms):
The owl house:
These are all hunter ones because I like him the most
- Hunter texts like an old man and posts really blurry photos on penstagram
This one comes from a Headcanon I have relating to Melly that she’s the really tech savvy one and creates new slang in ever text and hunter is like a literal caveman like bro probably didn’t even know about electricity until he was 14
Lke melly prbly txts like ths 2 save time n all her txts
AN.d H un T3r TexTs.likethis be,aues hes nevER USEDA0hone be froe
- he also gives really heartfelt apologies for really silly things like
‘Dearest Luz, I am deeply apologetic towards you for my use of the phrase ‘Fatherless Behaviour’ towards you this morning. I was informed by Gus that it was a funny phrase used by humans towards people who are fans of the popular Minecraft Youtuber, Dreamwastaken, which you have mentioned to me that you enjoy. Thus, I found using the phrase to be appropriate for the situation. I was unaware that it had bad undertones however, as I had not been informed about the passing of your father. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. - Hunter.’
- Also all 3 of the blights ratio him on literally everything like he’ll tweet about what happened to Flapjack and they’ll have successfully ratioed him 1931029:1 in 30 seconds
South park:
Okay let me tell you there’s a lot of these so buckle in:
For context, most of these (all) come from a crack episode me and my sister thought up last year about a costume day, so they’re all really stupid and ooc ones (even more so than hunter’s)
- Craig is a huge Hamilton Stan
He absolutely went through a phase from 2016-18, this alongside Bmc and Heathers made him realise he was gay (he probably kinned Laurens and Michael and then realised why like 3 years later and was definitely into JD) his favourite song is what’d I miss and had to buy more storage because of the amount of Hamilton memes on his phone
- On the other hand, Mr Mackey despises LMM with a burning passion
This one started out as a joke where he threatens to expel Craig for liking Hamilton (‘if you come into my office talking about Lin Manuel Miranda I will expel you) but next time it was brought up it was misremembered as Kill so then it snowballed into this weed of a man threatening nuclear genocide on the universe at the mention of this man?? But he does gen seem like the kinda guy who doesn’t like Hamilton (principal Victoria would love it though she’d be super enthusiastic about the inclusion and stuff (not a pc principal level though))
- Principal Victoria is the worlds most performative activist
I drew fanart of her standing next to Craig in a hospital bed holding a pride flag like ‘get well soon!! Please don’t tell your parents about this!! I’m an ally!!’ (Context: she nearly accidentally killed him)
- Kyle and Stan don’t have really high pitched voices, Clyde doesn’t sound like a Chad, and Cartman doesn’t sound like a grater
Context: nobody involved in the voice cast of RotBC can voice act
Bonus, which isn’t from RotBC: Mysterion and Pip aren’t actually best friends and Kenny actually hates him as much as anyone else

HORROR MOVIES WATCHED 2K22
‼️ Disclaimer ‼️ these are half baked opinions that, in the end, do not really matter, and have no effect nor hold any judgement on if you enjoyed/did not enjoy the same movies. I have no critical thinking skills and the number rankings are frivolous at best. YMMV. Have a good day. I love you drink some water. Be cool.
TO BE UPDATED
SPOILERS AHEAD
COMEDY-HORROR
Not everyone enjoys the hack n slash and brutality of other horror types so let's start with some lighter movies for those folks:
HOLLYBLOOD (Netflix) - 7/10
Spanish (dubbed) Twilight parody turned very very very light thriller. Literally, Hollyblood is the in-universe name for a Twilight movie. Has the most supportive dad to exist. "He's confused but he's got the spirit" in human form. CGI is minimal and cheesy, practical effects are cheesy and silly as hell. A good time. Desperate teen love, and nuns. Guys wearing eyeliner. A+
THE BABYSITTER (Netflix) - 9/10
Always a sucker for an Evil Barbie. Has some of the most bloodthirsty teenagers in it who can also be wholesomely supportive of the kid they're trying to kill. Found Family in reverse. So much blood and a good amount of gore. Loses a point for the kid wanting to be a cop tho.
MY BEST FRIENDS EXORCISM (Amazon) - 10/10
Trauma and backstabbing everywhere, just like real highschool. Adults not caring about their teenage daughters, just like real highschool!! Bash from GLOW teaching kids about lifting weights for Jesus!! Just like real highschool!!!! For real tho the 4 main characters are all pretty insufferable in a realistic way and the more horror the movie turns the less i think Bash from GLOW was told it was a horror movie and not a straight comedy.
CLASSIC HORROR/THRILLER
Blood n gore and monsters and sometimes magic:
THE PRIVILEGE (Netflix) - 0/10
Idk what the fuck even happened in this movie. Nothing happened and nothing mattered. Don't ask too many questions cuz they won't answer them. Maybe ghosts? Maybe demons? What was with the old lady?
BLAIR WITCH (2016) (Netflix) - 0/10
Why did we watch this we hate found footage this made no sense IF EVERYONE DIED WHO FOUND THE FOOTAGE
NO ONE SLEEPS IN THE WOODS TONIGHT (Netflix) - 4/10
A Polish (dubbed) kids-at-camp type movie. Mostly disappointed in how the fact they were at a tech-addiction camp never came into play outside of not having phones, and a lot of the deaths felt anticlimactic. Also aliens? Not much CGI use and one or two of the practical moments was cool. Gain points for hilarious mannequin head toss and Jurek's death scene.
THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE (Netflix) - 7/10
All the gays live. The killer is not who you'd probably expect but exactly who it should be. Kids trying to survive high school. The killers motives made no sense after the first two murders.
ELI (Netflix) - 7/10
Not really a horror movie? Nothing scary in it but some predictable jump scares. Cool movie anyway tho. Netflix is lying about the 'heart-stopping scares'. Medical horror, maybe.
INCARNATE (Netflix) - 8/10
Short (84 minutes) sweet and to the point. Did its thing and ended. Inception but Demons, hosted by Mr. Batman Two Face himself. Genuinely want more.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022) (Netflix) - 8/10
Gentrification Is Bad and Influencers are Fucking Annoying: The Movie. Lots of blood and screaming, loved the inclusion of school shooting trauma. Party Bus massacre best massacre. No magic no monsters just a pissed off dude committing murders in the name of his mom and town.
THE RITUAL (Netflix) - 9/10
Andy Serkis's movie about why camping is bad and he's right to say it. Fuck hiking. Norse mythology, cool monster, cool visuals, cults, guilt, friends fighting, compasses spinning in circles, all the good ingredients a horror movie needs.
THE OLD WAYS (Netflix) - 9/10
A somewhat realistic take on someone not believing there's a demon inside them. Cool visuals and effects, definitely had my gag reflex activated strongly at one point. The end is not the end and then there's the REAL end that is SO MUCH BETTER than if they had stopped ten minutes before. Main character ends up badass af. Based in Mexico.
HELLRAISER (2022) (Hulu) - 9/10
Confused on the rules but doesn't matter because Jamie Clayton and cool monster designs. Everyone gettin' off on torture. it's a good time. Love all the skin peeling, it's like helping mom with the potatoes on Thanksgiving
A LIL DIFFERENT
Focused more on the mystery and story than the amount of gore scattered around (not that there's NO gore mind you):
THE BYE BYE MAN (Netflix) - 0/10
Yes we watched this because of the name. It should probably go under the Classic Horror style group but because of how hard it failed at feeling like horror it doesn't deserve to be there. The entire budget went into getting Carie-Anne Moss for the last half hour and honestly she's the best part of it. There's like?? No blood?? Would get two points for the cool little girl who saves her family by not being able to read in the dark but not even that can reclaim how bad this was. 3 college kids dick around and the killer does NOTHING the whole movie.
FEAR STREET trilogy (Netflix) - 10/10
Yes loosely based on RL Stine books. Don't worry, the Gays win in this one. All three movies NEED to be binged together honestly imho, separately they fell weird and disconnected. Great story and mystery, the time jumping is great and reveals so much information, Josh and Martin need to be protected and cherished at all times forever. Lots of violence and blood, gore is few and far between.

anime ive watched in 2022, ranked least to most favourite:
12: overlord (2015-)
(this show doesnt deserve a gif)
listen. its a bad show. anyone who tells you is good is marvelpilled to see action=good. the world setup and characters had a lot of potential in season 1, but with each season it got progressively worse. the show spends a lot of time developing side characters, and then kills them off just to show how strong the protagonist is. said protagonist goes through little to no character development over 4 entire seasons. even the action and fights arent well done theyre just fights. everything’s a curbstomp and it sucks. idk man even fic cant fix this one.
11: tales of phantasia (2004)
Tumblr media
pros: seeing the characters animated instead of in little pixeled sprites. cons: everything else. its a bad adaptation.
10: chainsaw man (2022-)
Tumblr media
this one’s also not for me! i think its a really good show, between the pacing, interpersonal relationships, and animation (plus a different ending per ep is god tier). but it makes me feel bad to watch and not even in a cathartic way.
9: spy x family (2022-)
Tumblr media
its a fun show! the animation’s great and its funny. but it doesnt stand out to me as much as its hyped. definitely recommend, but doesnt compare to my other faves.
8. black butler (2008)
Tumblr media
the story? WACK. the characters? WACK. made me laugh though and it was really fun to watch as like, something id only heard about back in middle school. would not recommend but i had fun watching it. plus, its one of the few shows (ok first seasons) that actively keeps its word and doesnt try to pull a deus ex to save the protag at the end. we need more of this.
7. the case study of vanitas (2022-)
Tumblr media
the way this show deals with unreliable narrators and complex interpersonal relationships and still manages to have incredible worldbuilding… the characters are all so well done and i NEED to have more of it animated.
6. demon slayer (entertainment district arc) (2022-)
Tumblr media
i dont care what anyone says i love this show. best quality animation of the decade. super compelling cast of characters. i watched the rest of the show last year, but this one gets included bc its new and it made me rewatch the entire show twice. that fight at the end had me truly speechless
4. komi cant communicate (2021-)
Tumblr media
i laughed until i cried several times while watching this and that alone puts any show near the top for me
3. fabiniku (2022-)
Tumblr media
see above. every ep had me in tears. best ending song of the year (hiii most played song). plus its gender.
2. mairimashita! iruma-kun (2019-)
Tumblr media
life changing show. to me. like i dont even know what to say about it. character designs rule. op/ed AND musical songs are good. first anime to make me pick up its manga in a literal decade. theres nonbinary characters. its an isekai. every character makes me go :D when they come up on screen. 11/10
1. mob psycho 100 (2016-2022)
Tumblr media
show of all time TRULY. nothing i can add that hasnt been lauded on here before. soundtrack, animation, character designs, writing, attention to detail, humour, it has EVERYTHING. has a (new) favourite character of anything ever (ritsu). ive rewatched it three times in 3 months (incredibly high praise from me)
