“What’s on your nasty old mind?”
Your childhood was by no means perfect. In fact, things seldom worked out in your favor. Born an only child in a middle-class working household, your parents were absent for long periods of time. Mom worked late nights at the hospital in the week, and dad was always away on business trips or out at company meetings. How many of these were actually late-night corporate gatherings and not just another woman he’d sneak off to see, you had no clue.
School was difficult, although you excelled in your courses, the stress ate away at you and withered you down like a dying flower. Decaying petal by petal, thorn by thorn, you’d find yourself questioning what the purpose of all this was if just to slave away at a desk and make money.
It seemed most everything was at the cost of your time, money, and sanity- except your friendship with Felix.
Lee Felix- even the name brought back distinct memories. Lazy, carefree afternoons when the two of you would spend hours upon hours scattering the sidewalks with chalk drawings of sea animals and hopscotch squares. Racing each other to the ice cream man’s cart when you’d hear the jingle from a block away. Laughing between singsong acrostic poems over colorful popsicles, the heat melting sticky sweetness onto your fingers, where you’d run them over your tinted red sunburns for some relief.
Most nights you’d spend at Felix’s house, tucked away in makeshift blanket forts in his bedroom- doing your best to keep hushed while you’d devise plans for tomorrow’s equally carefree July summer day.
Sometimes his sisters would join the two of you, learning all about your games as you’d walk them through the rules and dedicate one of them to the role of referee (per Felix’s sore loser request). But as you grew older, they made their own plans and friends, leaving the two of you to grow up alongside each other.
Days turned to months, which quickly turned to years that the two of you had been best friends. You observed as Felix grew taller and leaner, his short brown hair framing the introduction of freckles scattered all over his face- cheeks, eyes, and button nose. He couldn’t help but comment when you painted your nails for the first time, remarking he’d forgotten you were a girl sometimes.
Before you knew it, you and Felix made it to high school, where you each formed your own friend groups. You, a solid group of girls who shared your newfound interest in horror movies and girls nights. And Felix, a group of guys from the soccer team, the sport which he spent most of his teenage years wrapped up in.
Although you had your own lives, you and Felix remained close. You greeted him with a gentle wave every time you passed each other in the hallways, even if you were with your own groups of friends. Felix admired your newfound love for fashion, often complimenting your outfits when you had a second alone. His favorites usually involved anything olive green- which he made known was the best color on your naturally tanned skin tone. He gave his approval when you got highlights for the first time, experimented with different piercings, and even showed more skin than usual as the spring transitioned to summer.
You didn’t go unnoticed by the others in your grade- in fact, you became a particularly hot topic when you got your first boyfriend. He was a nerdy little member of the water polo team, with whom you’d spend your days after practice in his car listening to music and sharing stories of his day. It was also then that you shared your first kiss- a short, sloppy encounter in the front of his mom’s green minivan. Nothing that stuck with you in the long run, for the two of you broke up just two weeks later, citing “conflicting schedules”. He was with a new girl a week after that.
Felix was also a popular topic on campus. Girls visited his away soccer games just to watch him play, squealing when he’d score a goal and give them a little wave from down on the field. He had a girlfriend almost every year of his high school career- ranging from the most popular girl in school, to one a year older than him, and even rumors of some from rival schools (none of which were very serious). You often passed him locking lips with a girl when you passed his locker, looking awkward and a bit too happy to be there. It was those times that he had failed to acknowledge you, which you never cared about, considering you indulged in crushes on most of his friends anyway.
But he still kept you in his thoughts, making small talk when he passed you alone, and even bringing brownies from his mom when she baked a little too much (the famous recipe passed to Felix shortly after). You assured him that things were well, your parents still just as busy, your cat doing just fine, your college applications taking too much time these days.
He was just as giddy as his younger self, beaming when you shared good news and sending you off with a hug when his girlfriend or soccer buddies would drag him away. You weren’t sure any of them liked you, but they acknowledged you with a small thin-lipped smile every time they came around, which was enough for you.
Your final year of high school was a turning point for the two of you. You had made it into your first choice of university, a mere two hours from your household, with grades that reflected your hard work. Felix, on the other hand, chose a different career path.
When he knocked on your door one night, the last person you’d guessed it would be was Felix. You opened the door for him, wrapping your arms around your oversized hoodie that swallowed your frame.
“Hey!” he said enthusiastically.
“Felix!” you exclaimed quietly. Nobody was home at this hour, but the way the streetlights lit the dim world beyond your door, it felt odd to talk any louder than this.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?” he asked politely, to which you furrowed your brows.
“Yeah, sure... I mean, is it bad? You’re kinda scaring me.”
He chuckled lightly. “It’s nothing bad. I just wanted to give you the news first.”
You squint your eyes, unsure if you should invite him in. It felt odd considering he hadn’t been over in a while, but you didn’t want to make things weird.
“Yeah- do you want to come inside? Should I sit down for this?”
He chuckled again. “I won’t be long.”
You stepped aside as he passed through the door, standing with his hands in his pockets as you shut it behind you.
You led him to the living room, where he sat on the edge of the couch and smiled up at you. You took a seat next to him, facing your body toward him and smiling back.
“Okay…” you said timidly.
“Okay,” he began. “You remember when we were little, and I took those dance classes?”
You furrowed your brows at that. “Yeah, the hip hop ones? When you had that little performance?”
“Exactly,” he said.
“Yeah, I remember. We were so little!”
“We were!” he replied. “Anyway, so I did this tryout at an audition a little while back. It wasn’t really something I told anyone about, you know, in case they rejected me.”
You nodded, waiting for him to continue.
“And… well… they want me to keep at it.”
You cocked your head slightly, trying to make sense of his vague tone.
“You mean… you passed the audition?”
A small smile began to form on his lips.
“Kind of? They want me to keep practicing as a… trainee? And then if I get picked, I could possibly get… signed?” he finished with a questioning tone.
The smile on your face grew as he finished his sentence.
“They want to sign you?!” you exclaimed, a warm feeling overtaking your chest.
He laughed. “Not yet, not until I go there and try out officially. But there could be a chance, I guess?”
You jumped up, waving your hands with frantic excitement. “Oh my god, Felix! That’s amazing! You have to do it! When are you- I mean, where are the tryouts? I want to watch as much as I can! How’s that gonna work out with school?”
He sighed. “That was my next point.”
You paused, watching his expression grow worrisome.
“It’s… in Korea.”
Felix expected you to cry, to choke up or even to bawl your eyes out. But you didn’t- instead, you gasped with an even bigger smile and gave one solid nod.
“Go,” you said firmly. “You can’t pass this chance up. There’s always university, and the people here, and life. You may never have this again. Go, and I’ll be rooting for you.”
His smile returned, his eyes narrowing into little crescent moons as he beamed across from you.
“You think so?” he asked.
“Oh I know so,” you reply. “Besides, if you get all famous, maybe this stupid town will be known for something other than being a shithole. They’ll say ‘you know that Felix kid’? He’s from there!”
Felix laughed, throwing his head back a little. When the two of you stopped laughing, he looked back at you, appreciation in his expression.
“You’ve always been here for me. I won’t forget that. Not ever.”
You shook your head, waving a hand.
“I’m just being a friend, Felix. That’s what we’ve always been to each other.”
He nodded. “Speaking of my best friend, where are you headed after graduation?”
You raised an eyebrow at him, cocking your head in the direction of the acceptance letter on the coffee table. “I don’t think there was ever a version of this universe where I’d be okay with not going.”
Felix’s jaw hung open, head shaking in disbelief. “Well I think this version of the universe knows how lucky they’d be to have you,” he said, extending his arms out for a hug, which you gladly accepted.
Felix held you against his chest for a minute, rubbing small circles into your back as he remarked how proud he was of you. You parroted the statement, telling him you knew he was going to make it big.
When he pulled away, his eyes darted to your lips for a brief second, and then back up to your eyes. “I can’t tell if that’s the same lip gloss you wore when we were younger.”
You chuckled. “Why would I keep the same tube of lip gloss from a decade ago?”
He smiled, a little embarrassed at his own remark. “I don’t know! You always wore that one. Strawberries? Or something like that.”
“Raspberries,” you said with a smile, and he held his gaze on yours for a second.
“Raspberry,” he echoed. “She wore raspberry.”
And in the midst of lingering seconds, he gently leaned into you, a strand of black hair falling over one eye.
“y/n… Can I… Would it be weird if I kissed you?”
You were startled for a second, as the action hadn’t crossed your mind in the time you’d known him.
“I mean, nevermind… sorry, that was weird. I’m just excited and I guess I felt like that would… lock in the moment? God, I’m sorry, that sounds so dumb-”
You chuckled at his nervousness. “Felix, if you wanted to lock in the moment, I’m pretty sure that little tangent did it enough.”
He chuckled too, a little disappointed you didn’t agree.
“Right, that’s probably true. I don’t even know why I asked that. We’re just friends after all, and it’s not like I came here to do that. I literally just got out of my relationship and I promise I’m not hitting on you-”
“Felix,” you interrupted. “I’m happy too. Come here,” you said gently, pulling his face to yours.
He smiled before pressing a tender kiss to your glossed lips, smiling into it and instinctively reaching a hand up to cup your cheek.
When he pulled away, you laughed and wiped the sweet residue from the corners of his mouth.
It didn’t feel any different between you two, only your happiness for him was elevated by the emotions running through you following the encounter.
“I’m so, so proud of you,” you told him again. “And I know you’re going to do great things.”
“I’m proud of you,” he echoed. “I don’t leave for a few months, if you want to do something? I mean as friends, obviously…”
You rolled your eyes jokingly. “A celebratory kiss doesn’t change anything between us. Duh, we can do something as friends.”
He laughed lightly. “Cool. I should get going, but we’ll catch up later?”
You nodded, gesturing to the door. “You know the way.”
And with that, he slipped back out into the night, his own house only a few blocks away.
*
Graduation came and went, and the two of you seemed to have reconnected again in ways you hadn’t during the entirety of high school. Felix would stop by in the early mornings, sometimes with little desserts he’d baked, and you’d enjoy them in the warm summer heat that enveloped your front porch.
For the first time ever, the two of you connected as blossoming adults. He told you tales of his past lovers- girls you now learned he would usually meet at soccer games away from your campus. He said he only ever really cared for one of them, whom he later broke up with to pursue somebody else he had his eye on. Defeating the purpose of him stating he ever cared for her, in typical Felix fashion.
He recalled the time he got caught cheating on his final math exam in sophomore year, which the teacher excused for how “tired he looked” (his words), and let him off with a gentle warning. He shared that he stayed up late practicing his dance and recording little songs on GarageBand, files which he’d save under recipe names on his computer, in case somebody accidentally came across one. Chocolate Cheesecake was his most recent, one which he’d gone so far as to upload a little thumbnail of the dessert for anonymity.
You soaked in his tales like you did the sunshine, laughing at his ability to turn the most outlandish scenarios into an adventure. You envied the way he had this long list of stories to pass down before he was even in university. But you shared your own stories back to him, albeit not the most exciting ones. You failed your driver’s test 3 times before finally passing, to which your instructor tentatively warned you to avoid busy streets for a few months. You almost set your house ablaze one night when you slept with a candle lit on your window sill. Nobody was hurt, but your mom scolded you for what felt like a lifetime. Your parents were going through a difficult patch right now, one you could see the possibility of ending in divorce. At this, Felix’s expression turned serious, swallowing at your words and nodding empathetically.
After exchanging a series of comforting words, he smiled over at you, chuckling at the way you licked your fingers clean of his famous fudge brownies.
“Is there a lucky guy?” he asked suddenly, wiggling his eyebrows in a curious manner.
“What?” you replied, trying your best to recall if you’d ever passed his house in the presence of another guy. Nothing came to mind- you hadn’t even pursued another boyfriend since your little water polo romance.
He chuckled. “Come on, there has to be somebody. I just told you all about the relationship I got out of. Think that’s reason enough to distract me with your version.”
You shook your head, smiling. “Absolutely no one. I don’t think I can do another car seat romance right now.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise. “A car seat? That’s risque! You weren’t afraid of getting caught?”
You shook your head. “What’s the harm in getting caught kissing? That’s hardly a big deal!”
He furrowed his brows. “Oh sorry, I thought… something else.”
You paused for a brief moment, understanding his implications. “Felix… are you… inquiring about my sex life right now?”
His freckles almost disappeared as his face turned a bright shade of red. He was afraid if you sat any closer, you might feel the heat radiating from the tips of his ears.
“No! I wasn’t- I just thought,” he stammered.
You laughed in response. “You could’ve just asked if I was a virgin, you know. That’s not weird.”
His blush grew brighter, if even possible. “Oh god. I didn’t come here to try and get details out of you, I promise. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
You shook your head. “You’re one of my best friends. I would likely tell you if I killed someone, you know.”
He laughed, the flush of his cheeks dying out a little. “Right.”
After a brief pause, you tilted your head in his direction. “Never.”
He raised his eyebrows a little, trying not to offend you with his reaction. “Never?”
You shook your head no. “Never! It just never happened. Of course if the right guy came along, I wouldn’t be opposed to it. But I’m not going to have sex with just anyone. It’s not that important to me.”
He nodded, taking in your words. There’s a kind of admiration he had for your thought process. And then he began to speak.
“Me neither.”
You almost jumped up in the swinging bench bench from beside him. “What? No way, I don’t believe you. You’re just saying that to make me feel better!”
He shrugged. “I don’t think I was with anybody long enough to get to that point. Plus, it’s not like I was ever away from my parents or teammates to get up to that kind of stuff.”
You made sense of his words, a silence falling over the two of you.
“I mean…” he continued. “One of the girls at our second away game of senior year kind of… touched me? In the locker rooms?”
You stifled laughter. “I don’t need to hear the gory details of your almost handjob, Felix.”
He laughed back. “It was over my gym shorts!”
“Okay, okay! I get the gist!” you retorted, laughing into your hands.
The two of you fell silent again, the buzz of the cicadas bringing you back to reality for a moment.
“I should get going,” you tell him. “But thank you for the brownies. You really don’t have to keep bringing them. I’m going out with the girls later so I guess I’ll see you tomorrow?”
“We could,” he said suddenly.
“What?” you replied, unsure of where his statement fit into your farewell.
“We could. Have… sex?” he clarified. You began to laugh, until you noticed his facial expression had turned serious.
“Felix? What are you proposing right now?”
He shrugged. “I’m not dating anyone. You’re not dating anyone. Neither of us have crossed it off our lists. It’s not like it has to be some big, emotional thing, y’know?”
Your eyebrows furrowed, and then quickly transitioned into a frown. “Are you just trying to get in my pants?”
His face panicked. “No, god no. I’m sorry. I just thought maybe you’d want to. I mean you’re going to college and there will probably be a ton of opportunities for it there. I’ll be living with like 20 guys for a while… I dunno, I just thought… It's stupid. I’m sorry.”
You thought over his words for a while. The thought of it didn’t turn you on- having sex with your childhood best friend. In fact, it was a little gross. But he was right- you hadn’t really checked it off your young adult list. And you wouldn’t see him for months, so any awkward emotions that arose would have months to pass by and dissipate.
“I’m gonna get going,” he said. “I’m sorry, I feel like I ruined things.”
“Okay,” you said. “Let’s do it.”
His eyes widened. “What?”
“You’re going to propose it and then act like I’m crazy for agreeing?” you replied.
“No, no! I mean- yeah. But only if you want to. Nothing emotional, if you don’t like it we can stop there. But we’ll have the story to tell when we’re both gone.”
“You make it sound like we’re dying, Felix.”
He chuckled.
“Let’s go inside. I’m not having my first time on a bench outdoors,” you finished.
He nodded, swallowing a big gulp of air. “Okay. I- do you want to take my hand? Or-”
You shook your head, chuckling at how awkward he managed to be sometimes. “Just go inside, I’ll meet you in my bedroom.”
*
Your bedroom was messier than you remembered. There were boxes scattered from packing for university. You realized Felix hadn’t seen it in a long time.
Posters of local bands scattered the walls, your mirrors plastered with collections of stickers. Your bed wasn’t made, the sheets sprawled over the edge and tangled from your morning slumber.
You were the first to lay down, gesturing for Felix to come over from his awkward stance in the doorway. He obliged, crawling on top of you and hoisting his weight up by a single elbow.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked nervously.
You smiled up at him, noting the way his freckles were yet again concealed by the blush across his cheeks.
“Yeah, you can kiss me.”
Felix smiled down at you, leaning in and pressing a gentle, yet firm kiss to your lips. His ebony hair tickled your cheek, which you reached up to move out of his face.
It was romantic and slow, and his hands traveled to the small of your waist, pulling you closer to his lanky frame.
He kissed you for a good while, and you could tell that although he hadn’t slept with anyone, he’d certainly had his share of kissing girls. His lips were plump and soft, and his eyelashes fluttered with pleasure every time you sighed against his mouth.
You’d almost forgotten the agreement by the time he slid a hand under your shirt. “Is this okay?” he asked, his voice a little out of breath.
You nodded quickly in response, helping guide his hand to the curve of your breasts. Felix’s breath hitched in his throat as he examined your curves with the pads of his fingers. He awkwardly ran his index finger over your nipple, sighing in response when you let out a little gasp. His fingers were smooth, and oddly cold.
“So soft,” he said in a voice just above a whisper.
With growing eagerness in your core, you pulled back and slid your shirt over your head, glancing over at Felix who couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off your chest. You chuckled softly at his expression, mouth agape and stars in his eyes at the sight in front of him. He sure knew how to give you an ego boost.
“Your turn,” you said, snapping him back to reality.
“Yeah,” he replied, pulling the back of his white shirt over his head and tossing it aside, getting lost in the pile of your clothes already on the floor.
You observed his body too, taking in every new freckle you hadn’t seen before. They were scattered along his clavicles, painting his chest with little beige constellations and stopping just before his toned pecs. Where there was an absence of freckles, his muscles accentuated generously, jutting out as if begging to be explored.
You nodded, as if to say nice body, and a knowing smile grew on his pink lips. “Come here,” he said, pulling you close again and pressing chaste kisses to your neck and collarbones.
You really liked neck kisses, you learned, as he took his time brushing a tongue over patches of skin before peppering them with kisses and nibbling with feeble hunger.
Your hands reached up to tangle themselves in his silky hair, which he moaned gently in between kisses in response to. With your hands busy, he took the opportunity to slide a hand down, down- all the way down to your jeans.
Pulling away from your neck, he didn’t hesitate to snap open the button of your jeans and free your pelvis of the zipper. He didn’t even ask for permission, knowing by your reaction that the answer was yes, absolutely yes, please don’t stop.
Your hands left his hair to help slide your jeans off, and he towered over you to mirror the action. In between innocent giggles, he gathered both articles of clothing in his nimble hands, before making a dramatic show of tossing those on the floor, too.
You were down to just your underwear, a feeling which made you nervous as you became aware of how exposed you were. But Felix didn’t leave a single spot untouched, showering your skin with kisses as your hands found their way to his hair again.
“Can I try something?” Felix asked, pulling away to gauge your reaction through his fluttering lashes. You nodded, observing as he positioned himself between your legs, and reached a single hand to your underwear.
It was your turn for your breath to hitch, growing goosebumps as he placed a single finger to your still-clothed wetness. You gasped in response, the feeling not far from when you’d squeeze your thighs together to sex scenes from your favorite movies.
“I don’t really know how to do this,” he admitted to you shyly. “Tell me if it hurts, yeah?”
You brought your arms around his neck, smiling up at him and glancing down at his hands.
“Just circle my clit. With your finger. Like- yeah. Just like that,” you were interrupted by his successful attempt at following your instructions.
He smiled at your reaction, adding a finger and rubbing slow, thoughtful circles around your clit. You gasped at the heat growing in your core, happily accepting when he leaned down to kiss you as he continued. You stayed like that for several minutes, sweat pooling between your thighs as beams of sunlight glared through the window behind you.
Slowly, he hooked both fingers in your underwear, moving them aside to expose you, and placed fingers on your now fully exposed wetness. You gasped louder in response, humming with pleasure and gripping his toned bicep.
“Wait,” you said. “Let me just take them off.”
“Okay,” he replied in a gentle tone, pulling away a bit to let you slide your underwear off and over the bed.
Once bare, his fingers found their way back to your clit, now working little hearts into your skin. “Hearts?” you asked through a smile, kissing him harder and noting the lewd sounds of tongues and sweat and wetness that now filled the room.
He hummed in response, bucking his hips against your thigh, and you suddenly realized how hard he was for you. His bulge tented nicely in his gray boxers, the tip of his cock already flat against a generous spot of precum.
“Sorry,” he said, scared the accidental motion would make it look like he was moving too fast.
You grinned, shaking your head and propping yourself up on your elbows to look at him. “Take them off,” you requested plainly.
He gulped and nodded, admittedly scared of baring himself in front of you. You were already fully naked, and he’d forgotten the fact that he still had one article of clothing left to lose.
“You okay?” you asked, growing concerned at his silence. He nodded, responding by pulling his boxers down over his cock, which grew slowly against his abdomen.
He was just as you expected, veins bulging at his hardness, following the shape of his curvature to the wetted pink head.
“You’re so pretty,” you said, eyes fixated on his cock. He was flushed a rosy shade of pink as you stared, aching to explore every inch of him. Felix greeted your compliment with a toothy smile.
With a newfound confidence, he leaned back down to kiss you, his bulge sitting patiently at the entrance of your sex.
“Do you have a condom?” you asked, and he responded with a nod.
“I never got rid of this after health class,” Felix said, as he fished a silver packet out of the pocket of his jeans which hung off the bed.
“You’re such a nerd,” you replied, and he laughed lightly as he tore open the packet with his teeth.
You helped him slide the rubber down his length, careful not to pinch any part of his sensitive skin. His breathing was heavy, and you could tell he didn't have much time before he gave in.
“Ready?” Felix asked, as he positioned himself in front of you again.
“Ready,” you replied, and you both kept your eyes locked down below as he gripped his shaft and slid just the tip in.
“Oh god,” you remarked, surprised at the sensation even though he was barely in. “Does it hurt?” he panicked, and you shook your head. “Just a little. Do more, if you can.”
At this Felix, pulled out slightly, and then bucked his hips forward so that he was just barely halfway in.
“Fuck-” you heard, and you looked up to his eyelids shut tight and nose scrunched. His hair hung lazily around his face, sweat pooled at the ebony roots.
“Are you-” you began to ask if he was okay, when he slid out and let out a deep sigh.
“I finished,” he replied. “I’m sorry, I didn’t think it would feel that good.”
You smiled in response, relaxing your hands by your side and sitting up.
“Don’t apologize, Felix. It’s just your body.”
You took note of the tears welling in his eyes, and your expression shifted to that of concern. “Felix?”
He wiped with the back of his hand, sitting back on your bed like a scolded child. “I didn’t mean to finish so fast. I wanted it to last. I didn’t come here for sex, I promise. I just thought it would be a good idea and now it’s over and I did so badly.”
He hiccuped through tears, and you sat up to wipe them from his eyes. “You didn’t do badly, Felix. You did amazing. That was an amazing first time. Don’t apologize for a natural reaction. We’re not pros at this.”
He nodded slowly, sniffling and looking around for his shirt. “Well I guess I’ll go,” he said rather dryly.
You knew he was going to beat himself up for this, and you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
“Felix, don’t go,” you said. “I’m not letting you leave like this.”
“I already ruined things,” he responded.
“You didn’t ruin anything,” you said. “Plus, we always have next time?”
You surprised yourself with your own remark, blushing as he locked his eyes on yours again.
“Next time?” he questioned, his voice still frail and quiet.
You nodded. “I mean… if you want to? As friends, of course. I liked it,” you shrugged.
The last of his tears trickled down his cheeks as a small smile grew back on his face, illuminating the room with comfort once again.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’d like to do it again.”
You nodded, mirroring his smile. “Then we can do it again. It’s not a big deal, right?”
He shook his head, wiping tears with the back of his hand. “Just… practice I guess? That’s all it is.”
You nodded. “Just practice. Exactly.”
With bleary eyes, Felix rid himself of the condom and clothed himself again, pulling his shirt over his head and buttoning his jeans back how they were. You laid on your side, still nude in your bed, one hand tucked under your cheek, still entranced by the way the sun kissed Felix’s freckles in the June air. You hummed softly as the birds chirped outside, the sounds starkly contrasting the filthy moans emitting from your room just moments earlier.
“I’ll see you later?” he said, turning to you, his eyes flickering curiously to your chest and and between your thighs again. You tugged the sheets up to your chin, keeping your gaze on him for a minute.
“Busy later, remember?”
He nodded once. “Right. Are your parents home tonight? Or… what are you doing tomorrow?”
You couldn’t help but laugh at his helpless words. “Gosh Felix, you’re needy already. I’ll call you okay? I’m not gonna leave you hanging.”
He smiled in response, cocking his head to one side and taking one last look at you.
He’d never seen you like this, more skin showing than ever before. The way your mascara pooled around your eyes from shutting your eyes in pleasure. The way the last of the sun rays set little orange patches aglow on your olive skin, highlighting your clavicles like an oil painting. The way your smile said so much yet so little at the same time, as if to tell him you’ll be right here the next time. And the next, and the next- and hopefully several times after that.
He wanted nothing more than to touch himself and stay in for round two, but he was dying to go home and shower the lingering embarrassment off his body. With nothing else to say, he raised two fingers and gave a little salute, trying to send you off in the most casual manner he could, fearing you might change your mind about there being a next time.
“Catch ya later,” he said a bit awkwardly, and turned on his heel to stride out of your bedroom.
You said nothing in response, shutting your eyes and letting the evening drowsiness overtake you.
*
“You should hear when you’re not around, when it’s just us horny poets”
It didn’t take long before you and Felix were fucking like rabbits for the remainder of summer.
Handjobs on your porch when it was too early in the morning to be caught. Blowjobs in the backseat of his car, Felix strategically parking on little off roads where no one could interrupt, while his hands pulled mercilessly at your hair. Kisses all over your neck during movie nights, where you’d fold almost immediately and wind up under him for the remainder of- what was that film again? You’re not sure. You were sure of his nimble fingers, and the way his lips could work up just about anything out of you.
You’re sure he’d been studying pornography, the way his lips pressed little butterfly kisses all over your aching pussy, coming up to suckle your clit and spread your juices all over your thighs with more hungry kisses and nibbles.
Felix even felt comfortable enough to present you some of the videos he got off to, shyly angling his phone at you mid-makeout session, inquiring about your interest in sucking off his fingers. You challenged him, making him suck your fingers instead, while you edged him over his sweatpants. Note: he really liked that move.
The two of you were different tunes working in perfect harmony, your erotic ideas playing off of each other, resulting in some of your most intense memories together.
Not every idea worked out as you’d planned, but the time was never wasted. Nights where you couldn’t finish from penetration alone, he’d spend hours working you up with an old massager, his deep voice whispering sweet nothings into your ear while he fondled your breasts.
His words were so carefully picked, diligently selected from your favorite erotic fiction works you’d send him. “You like that? Is your pussy aching for me? Always so wet when I touch you. Could do this for hours…could hear you moan for hours.”
His breath tickled your neck, the sound of his own labored breathing growing louder and then quieter again as he’d brush his lips over your ear and fill your mind with little moans and filthy thoughts.
And the nights would always end safely. He’d bring his signature baked goods, massaging you in his lap as he fed you little bites of brownies and cookies and pies.
His words never stopped at sex, showering you with compliments and sweet nothings even if not to arouse you. “You did so well today. Thanks for letting me try that. I’m sorry if it hurts. Let’s try something more gentle tomorrow, yeah?”
And the weeks you couldn’t have sex, Felix never seemed to mind all too much. Sometimes he’d let you watch him pleasure himself, sometimes he’d brush off the idea all together. The stories you shared, and the laughs you got out of each other, were reason enough to spend just about every passing second together.
2:15am.
Felix pulled out, rolling over on his back again, letting out an exasperated sigh and shutting his eyes.
“Fuck. That was good. Are you okay?”
He forced an eyelid open, glancing over at your still lying body, too tired to speak but nodding through labored breaths.
“Yeah,” you managed a minute later.
The two of you remained like that for a few minutes, basking in the silence of the atmosphere around you. The world was quiet without the loud moans and cuss words that erupted when you were normally together.
And then came the sniffles.
When you began fucking, you quickly understood that you were learning things about Felix that maybe nobody knew before you. Not even Felix himself. Like how he scrunched his nose right before he finished, his open mouth following shortly after. The way he apologized after he let out an accidental slut or whore in the bedroom. They helped him get off on occasion, but he detested the thought of you internalizing the words. Or maybe the way his hands cramped quickly when he fingered you- he wasn’t used to using his hands as much as his legs or upper body. Soccer player problems.
But the most interesting thing you’d come to discover about Felix was his tendency to cry after sex.
Mornings, afternoons in his car, quickies in your room, it didn’t matter. 90 percent of the time, he’d cry after finishing, his whole face contorting into that of a guilty boy’s, eyes reddening as they welled with tears and found their home on the sleeves of his sweaters or corners of your sheets.
The second time it happened, you grew concerned for him, thinking it was something you’d done. You tried to break things off, saying “maybe this isn’t a good idea” and “I don’t want to do this if you’re not emotionally ready for it.”
But that only made him cry harder. Wrapping you in his arms and letting out gentle sobs in your knees. Begging you not to go, that he’d work on himself instead.
It never stopped, and although Felix tried to vocalize it, you always felt sorry for him.
“Sorry,” he’d explain through sobs. “Just felt so good.”
You never invalidated his feelings, always simply nodding at his words and holding him for as long as he needed to be held.
The truth is, Felix felt emotions so deeply, deeper than even he himself was capable of handling. The orgasms were an emotional high for him every time, pure bliss exiting his body and filling yours, you returning the favor with your praises for him.
When he came down from his high, it snapped him back to reality to remember that this was all temporary. That he’d be gone soon, that you’d be fucking somebody else in this bed within the next few weeks. That he didn’t buy you flowers, nor did he properly introduce himself to your parents, although you weren’t dating. That you’d be so generous to try just about anything with him, going at it for hours to determine what the two of you liked and didn’t like. That you sacrificed your body for his pleasure on nights you weren’t as horny as he was, and that you never made a fuss when he made a mess of you and your sheets.
That you held him after sex every time, massaging his hair with a gentle caress, telling him about how “amazing he did”  and that he was “so, so good to you.”
And through tear-stained eyes, he’d do the same for you, thanking you until sleep overtook you both.
Tonight was no different.
“Hey, hey,” you said to him soothingly. “Come here.”
He sat up, face in his hands for a moment as he let out quiet sobs and shook his head. “It’s no use. I can’t st-stop c-crying…” choked sobs trailed his voice away from you.
“Felix, you did so well. You always do. Are you overwhelmed? Talk to me,” you said, sitting up to embrace him.
He turned to hug you back, tears falling on your bare shoulder as you shushed him and pressed little kisses to his forehead.
“I’m… I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” You’d heard it a million times from him, but he always felt the need to justify himself to you.
“Don’t apologize,” you told him. “Don’t apologize for your body. Do you want to grab something to eat? I know it’s late, but McDonald’s is still open.”
He wiped his tears away for the second time today, nodding as you reached over and handed him his sweatshirt.
When his tears came to a halt, he smiled at you and leaned in to press a chaste kiss to your temple. “Thanks,” he said quietly. “I know it’s the least sexy thing you can do after an orgasm.”
You smiled back at him, standing up to gather your clothes from where they’d fallen. “Hey, I don’t care if you want to do your taxes after sex. I had fun, you had fun. That’s all that matters.”
Felix always admired your ability to downplay everything. No reaction of his was too much when he was around you. He felt normal, comfortable. Safe.
“Just gonna grab a new pair of underwear,” you said to him. “I’ll meet you back at the car.”
Felix nodded, scrambling out of the tangled sheets of your bed and grabbing his car keys.
As he exited your room, you took careful note of your disheveled appearance in the mirror. Bruises, messy hair, puffy lips. Tear-stained shoulders.
*
“Okay,” you began. “If you had to pick what you’d want your dorm mates to be like, what would  you say?”
You popped a french fry in your mouth, watching as Felix thought over the question.
“I’d say…” his Australian accent was thick as he pondered for a moment. “I dunno, maybe outgoing? I guess I’m not the most extroverted so I need some balance.”
You laughed. “Be careful what you wish for. Sometimes outgoing can be a veiled statement for annoying.”
He scrunched his nose at you. “Oh god. More annoying than me? I don’t even know if that’s possible.”
You slapped his arm playfully. “You’re right, I think you already beat them in that department.”
He remarked a sarcastic haha at you, taking a sip of his McFlurry before crossing his legs onto his seat.
“What about you- what do you hope the people at university are like?”
You swallowed, giving a small shrug. “I hope they make me feel comfortable.”
His eyes remained on you for a second, and you continued your response. “I just want to experience everything. I want to go bar-crawling with my friends at 2am. I want to go to parties, and study at the library for finals with a group of people who make it all worth it. I just want that typical experience.”
He nodded, his throat suddenly feeling dry.
He was reminded again that he wasn’t going to be a part of your university experience. You were going to meet new people, make new friends. Fuck new guys. And he wouldn’t be around to be part of any of it.
“You know,” Felix began. “I’m rooting for you. Even though I won’t be here to see how it all plays out.”
You pulled your lips into a thin smile, nodding. “I know you are. I don’t doubt that.”
“And,” you continued. “I’m rooting for you. I’ll be tuned in to all the programs they put you on. I’ll shoot you little messages about your silly stage outfits here and there. The whole kpop fan image? That’s going to be me, like, times a million. Maybe I’ll drag around your album everywhere I go.”
He laughed at the idea, tossing his head back. “Hey, don’t speak too soon. If things fall through I’ll be back in less than a month. I don’t even speak Korean. Got a lot of learning to do.”
You waved him off. “You’ll catch on. I know you will.”
He held your gaze for a moment, smiling again before leaning in to kiss you. His lips tasted like oreos, and yours lingered of salty fries.
“2 weeks,” he said when he pulled away. “I can’t believe how fast this summer went by.”
You agreed with a slight tilt of your head.
He glanced out the window briefly. The cicadas had gotten quieter now that August drew to a close. You were at the usual spot you hooked up at, parked in his car across a vista point just off the highway. The view overlooked a canyon of trees, which looked like something out of a horror movie at this hour of the night.
He looked back at you and nodded in the direction of the backseat, a gesture you knew very well. You climbed over the center console, already pulling off your sweatpants and adjusting yourself so your legs were propped open.
Felix followed after you, slipping off his jeans and pulling you onto his lap.
Hasty kisses met your lips and neck as he gripped your waist and massaged little circles into the dimples that met your lower back. He let little moans meet your mouth as you palmed his already-hard cock through his boxers, rocking back and forth on his thigh to stimulate yourself first.
One hand reached up and snaked two fingers into your mouth. “Suck,” he instructed.
You wrapped desperate fingers around his wrist, pressing little kisses to the pads of his fingers before slipping them in and out of your drooly mouth. He didn’t break eye contact as you hollowed your cheeks and stared at him through long lashes, moving slowly and savoring the taste of his soft skin.
“Good,” he said, and you released him with a gentle pop, a string of saliva connecting him to you still.
He licked a stripe along his fingers too, sharing the flavor of your needy spit, before reaching down and moving your underwear aside.
You gasped as a finger pressed hastily to your clit, rubbing little hearts as he usually did, which he knew drove you wild. He rubbed back and forth, grazing down your slit and back up again, before finding his way to your entrance.
Felix gently inserted a first, and then a second finger, inside your soaking cunt, using his thumb to graze your clit and make you emit breathy moans from the sensation.
“Fuck,” you breathed, watching him tilt his head to one side.
“That feel good? Hmm?” He cooed with a smile, already knowing the answer by your pleasured response.
You nodded, eyebrows arched up in pleasure as he moved faster. Felix nodded with you as you gripped his wrist, digging nail marks into his veiny forearm.
“Felix, would you fuck me?” you asked him politely, your breathing speeding up.
“Hmm? I am fucking you, sweetheart.” The pet names, god, the pet names. He knew exactly what they did to you.
“Want your cock in me,” you specified, gripping his wrist again to slow his pace. He hummed in response, moving a strand of hair out of your face and pressing little kisses to your exposed neck.
Feeling he’d teased you enough, Felix pulled his boxers down and tossed them aside, gasping as you jerked him twice and thumbed at his tip.
“Fuck, stop,” he begged you. “I don’t want to finish yet.”
You, nodded removing your panties with ease and waiting patiently as he slid a condom efficiently over his length and positioned himself. Before you could lay back and spread, he gripped your waist again, lifting you onto his lap and rubbing against your soaking slit.
“Wanna fuck up into you,” he said. “Wrap your arms around me.”
You did as told, grabbing hold of his warm gray hoodie and taking a deep breath as he lowered you on to him.
Felix let out a hearty moan, soaking in how good it felt. You’d ridden him once before, but this was something else. Needy hands grabbed at each other, making desperate attempts to grope your flesh and bring you closer to him. His hands rested on your lower back and syncopated with your breathing as he lifted you down on to him and bucked his hips up into you.
You felt every inch of his cock twitching inside of you, about to fill you up before you caressed his jaw and pleaded. “Don’t move,” you instructed. “I just want to feel you for a second.”
Felix did as told, slowing his thrusts down and reciprocating as you leaned down for a sloppy kiss. His cock pulsated against your already throbbing clit, sending shivers down your spine as you kissed him again, and again. Making him feel every ounce of your want for him and only him.
His mouth was wet with drool, giant sultry eyes so full of want and need for your body. When you pulled away, you took in his face for a second. Although it was dark, you could still make out the flush of his cheeks around his freckles. Dark strands of hair hung loosely around his jaw, and the musk of his cologne filled the air as he sweated profusely in the steamy car.
“Okay,” you said finally. “Cum in me. Please.”
The words were all it took before Felix thrust up into you again, his nose scrunching and mouth agape as he shot thick, white strands of his pleasure into the rubber.
You let out a breathy sigh as he slid out of you, tying up the condom and tossing it aside.
But you didn’t move from off of him, instead holding him and pressing little kisses to his forehead. Like clockwork, the tears began to flow. You kissed them back up his cheeks, letting the salty taste melt on your already salted tongue.
“It’s okay,” you assured, and he sniffled with innocent puppy-dog eyes that looked up at you. You wrapped a hand around his hair, pulling him closer and ruffling his locks with empathy. “You okay? That was really good.”
He nodded, wiping his tears with sleeves that enveloped his hands like little paws. “Felt really good,” he said, letting out another choked sob.
“I know,” you replied. “I know it’s a lot. I’ve got you.”
It was usually at this point that Felix’s crying began to lessen, but he started crying even harder at your consolation.
“Felix?” you asked, getting worried with his growing sadness. He nuzzled his face into your neck, letting tears fall to your neck and wet your hoodie.
“Don’t forget me,” he said suddenly, and you were taken aback by his pleading tone.
You pushed him away, tilting his chin up to meet yours again.
“Felix,” you said. “Nothing could ever make me forget you. You’re my best friend. We’ll see each other again.”
He nodded, but a smile was still absent from his expression.
You pulled him in for another hug, rubbing circles into his hoodie and shushing him gently.
“My star,” you cooed tenderly. “Could never forget you.”
Your hands grazed the back of his neck as he held you too, feeling small and vulnerable, but safe. Always safe.

“You may not like it, but you better learn how, ‘cause it’s your turn now”
Felix left on a Thursday.
It was a dark September morning, the day too early to reveal what the weather would bring. He wore a hoodie and his favorite sweatpants, looking especially boyish with a bulky pair of headphones around his neck, his sleek black hair pushed back with a headband. One of yours- one he’d found in the backseat of his car.
He packed the remainder of his bags, glancing over at your street in the chill of the September air as his mom loaded the car with his belongings.
I’ll see her soon, he assured himself. After all, you had promised you wouldn’t forget him.
The day prior was spent with his family, enjoying one last home-cooked meal with his mom and sisters. They exchanged a few gifts they’d generously picked for him, knowing they’d miss his 19th birthday, just 2 weeks out from his departure date.
Felix cried at the gesture, the idea of a birthday spent alone suddenly filling him with dread.
And after double counting his bags, his family was off to sleep. “Don’t use your phone,” his mother had remarked several times. “We need to be at the airport very early tomorrow.”
And when he was sure she was asleep, little snores confirming his theory, Felix climbed out of his window and disappeared into the dimly lit streets, mentally apologizing to his mom for disobeying every one of her orders.
The air was more unforgiving than when he’d escaped in the summer months, painting little goosebumps on his bare arms and showing his breath back to him when he exhaled.
Still, he ran. He ran and ran, and he didn’t waste a second booking it to your place.
Your window was left ajar as it usually was, you sitting up in bed with a book. When the crunch of leaves drew your attention to the paned glass, you knew exactly who it was.
Felix usually did his best to lead into your sessions as a gentleman would, inquiring about your day and sharing little bits of his. But his heartbeat quickened with every passing second, knowing this was it. This was the last time he’d have you for who knew how long, and his body ached for yours already.
You wasted no time helping him climb inside, already attaching your lips to his, as he guided you back into your bed.
He pulled his t-shirt over his head, slipping off your nightgown too, pressing hungry kisses to your thighs and moaning against your soft skin.
He wanted to say something, he wanted so badly to tell you how sorry he was for brushing past your day, that he did in fact care, but that he needed all of you first. He wanted to apologize for all the times he ignored you in the hallways back at school, mentally punishing himself for not being a more prominent part of your teenage years sooner. He wanted to tell you that Oreo McFlurries all tasted like you now, and they always would. For as long as he remembered you.
Your hands in his hair brought him back to the moment, and he wasted no time attaching his drooly tongue to your clit, moving back and forth like a starving animal eating for the first time in days.
His licks turned into saliva-filled kisses, wrapping his lips around your clit and making loud sucking noises as he pulled back and left no inch of your folds untasted. Between his licking and ravenous kisses, you felt your body tense as you reached your high. It must’ve been a new record, you thought to yourself, as your legs trembled and you leaked cum all over his pretty face.
Your orgasm was intoxicating, but your need for him kept you aching, and you knew you had a lot more left in you still.
Felix’s mouth met yours again, letting you taste yourself on his wet lips. He smiled in between kisses, trailing kisses down to your breasts and suckling each nipple with soft hums.
“Gonna make you feel so good tonight,” he said for the first time tonight, in between breathless kisses. “Just lay back. You don’t have to lift a finger.”
You shivered at his words, an agreement you normally didn’t do when you linked. You always returned the favor in one way or another, but tonight, he wanted to prove himself to you.
As he pressed kisses down your torso, he complimented you between gasps for air, making you giggle as you looked down at him. “So… beautiful…” he’d say. “So soft… love how you’re always ready for me…”
His mouth found his way to your clit again, and you didn’t care that you were already overstimulated from your first orgasm. He kissed you all over, paying careful attention to your swollen clit, moaning as you stifled screams and gasps.
Felix tasted you for what felt like hours. You’d finished all over him a total of three times already, and well into the fourth, you pulled him up by his hair. “Need you,” you said, your insides aching to clench around him just once.
He didn’t waste any time demanding you specify your words, knowing exactly what you wanted from him. His boxers were stained with dark gray spots of wetness, and you realized he must’ve been aching for you too. The thought of his straining bulge made you even wetter for him, if that was even possible.
Hoisting your legs up around his waist, Felix wrapped himself up and thrusted into you with more force than you’d felt from him before. Tears pricked the corners of your eyes, your nails scratching red marks all over his forearms.
“Does it hurt?” he asked, pausing for a moment. You shook your head no, moving a strand of hair out of his face.
With that, he thrust into you again, and again, loud moans and whimpers escaping his lips like you’d never heard before. As he watched your fucked-out expression, he snaked a hand around your throat, lining your eyesight up with his.
“Look at me,” he demanded. You kept your gaze on him, pondering how this was the same person who so delicately kissed you and held your hand when you weren’t underneath him like this.
“You gonna miss me?” he asked between rhythmic thrusts. You nodded.
“You gonna think of me when you touch yourself?” he asked, and your heartbeat quickened at his tone.
“Yes,” you replied, barely above a whisper.
“You gonna tell me when you’re all wet and needy for me? You gonna touch yourself and think of how I fucked you?”
Your heartbeat kept quickening, his words both dizzying and unexpected.
“Felix…” you said, but your voice trailed off as he quickened his pace again.
“Say it again,” he ordered.
“Felix.”
“Louder. Want the neighbors to hear how good I fuck you.”
“Felix!” You said louder as he moved even faster, your nails clawing into his back as your own voice filled your ears.
When you opened your eyes, his nose was scrunched in pleasure, followed by his plump lips parted, which chased his high. He moaned for what seemed like several minutes, thrusting himself empty, and slowing inside of you, making sure you were completely overstimulated before pulling out.
You sat up quickly, knowing he was going to cry himself silly tonight. As you pressed your hands to his cheeks, already rubbing your thumbs at his lashes, he nuzzled into you and pulled you closer.
“I’m sorry,” he said, voice shaky with overwhelming sadness already.
But this time, you felt yourself start to cry, too. Your eyes welled with tears at the sight of him, holding you like a small child clutches a teddy bear, crying into your knees and letting little sobs escape his parted lips. When he heard your sniffles, he looked up at you, pouting through tears at the sight. It was his turn to pull you close, placing a gentle hand to the back of your head and holding you close to his chest, afraid he might break you if he didn’t maintain his fragile embrace.
He didn’t ask why you cried. He just stayed like that, holding you close to him, listening to your quiet sobs like music and grazing his hands over the skin he’d previously bruised and made a mess of.
3:56am.
Felix hadn’t meant to lose track of time this badly, and you knew he was supposed to leave for the airport in just an hour.
“Felix,” you said to him. “I didn’t mean to keep you up this late…”
He shook his head firmly, wiping his cheeks with the corner of your sheets.
“I can sleep on the plane,” he responded. His eyes were puffy and red, and you thumbed over his eyelids in attempts to soothe the irritated skin.
You pulled away, sliding out of your bed and pulling on your nightgown. “Have a little surprise for you,” you said, hoping to get at least a smile out of him before he left tonight.
It worked, his lips pulled into a curious grin as he slipped a shirt on himself, too.
“What is it?,” Felix remarked.
You didn’t respond, instead digging through your drawers and pulling out a small tube.
You tossed it over to him, his skilled fingers catching it quickly and observing it under the moonlight peering through the window.
“Your chapstick!” he said with a smile. “Raspberry.”
You smiled back at him and shrugged.  “Little taste of home.”
He twisted the tube between his slender fingers for a bit, uncapping it and bringing it up to his swollen lips.
You watched as he glided the cherry color across his smile, running over the tint with his tongue and smacking his lips together lightly.
“Tastes like you,” he remarked.
You shrugged again with a smile. “We match now.”
You urged Felix to go home and get at least an hour of sleep, but he refused defiantly, asking to be held in your blankets until he had to leave.
So you did. And for the last time he was able to, Felix asked about your day. He kept his eyes on you the whole time, careful not to blink excessively in case he missed the way your face lit up at the mention of your future college life. He took note of the way your chest rose and fell with slow breaths, clearly tired but not enough to leave his side.
You told him all about what you still had to pack before leaving for university. About the book you started this morning, the second one in a trilogy. You recounted your favorite songs, suggesting a few to him, which he added to a playlist for his flight.
The two of you reminisced the summer days, which had slipped by you in the blink of an eye, taking all your carefree thoughts with them. You voiced your favorite moments in his car- both sexual escapades and late-night McDonald’s runs, and he shared his own discoveries and favorite moments back to you.
He said he hoped your next lover would appreciate the smell of your raspberry lips as much as he did. And you silently wished he’d find someone who held him after intense sessions the way you learned he needed.
But before you knew it, the clock read 4:48am.
You knew Felix’s mom would be waking him any moment now, and he needed to be back in his own bed fast.
“Go,” you said, as he propped himself up and scanned over your alarm clock once again. “You’ll get in trouble.”
You followed as he slid out from your warm comforter, fixing up his hair and towering over you.
With a straight, yet heavy expression, he looked down and tilted your chin up with one finger, placing a gentle kiss to your lips and pulling away after a few seconds.
“It was fun,” you said, and he smiled in response, though saying nothing back.
You followed him back to the window, where he hoisted himself over the ledge and back into the cool September air.
Turning on his heel, Felix brought two fingers up to his forehead, giving you a little salute and a smile.
“Catch ya later,” he said, and disappeared again into the morning fog.
You hoped so. You really, really hoped so.

“I’m starting to suspect you don’t intend to do anything you say at all.”
The months that followed were tainted heavily by Felix’s absence. The lulling clouds and light drizzles that spanned far into November reminded you that the seasons did in fact change, whether you wanted them to or not.
Your college dorm was small and cramped, and the smooth white walls felt like that of a prison most days. But your roommate was nice, and the two of you hit it off fast. Late nights were spent snacking in the dining hall, where the two of you would gossip about the boys you shared classes with, making lewd remarks that remained a fun game between the two of you.
You spent most of your days in the library, a favorite spot of yours on the 8th floor that overlooked the busy streets and provided ample content to people-watch.
And you never heard from Felix.
You didn’t reach out, knowing he was busier than ever, his phone usage probably monitored heavily by the executives there. And such was life- the summer interactions like the games you now played with your new college roommate; between the two of you, and not meant to be an object of permanence by any means.
But some days, you took it harder than others.
Some days you were angry with yourself for sacrificing so much, barely recognizing the curves and birthmarks that painted your nude frame, upset that anyone had ever touched them.
Other days, you stifled toothy smiles in the palms of your hands, when you remembered the activities both of you got up to that summer. Some of the most incredulous, dirty-minded positions came flooding back to your memory, and no one around you would ever suspect such a pristine girl to have tried the things she did.
You did touch yourself to the memories of them, hoping your roommate wouldn’t hear the little gasps you let out with your hands between your thighs at such an ungodly hour. But as time passed on, the memories were less vivid, melting colors and tastes into obscurity, until you couldn’t get off to them anymore.
And then one day in your second year, Mark entered your life.
*
At first, you were convinced there had to be a catch, when he approached you in the library to borrow a pencil, slipping his phone number to you in exchange.
His dusty blue hair and stylish outfit had caught your eye in passing once, but you’d never considered the possibility of him noticing you.
Yet that he did, sealing his action with a closed-mouth smile, gesturing to your phone and miming a texting gesture at you. “Yo, like, you should text me or something. I always see you around here.”
You couldn’t help but laugh lightly, fascinated with the casual way he talked.
“I don’t even know your name,” you remarked jokingly.
“Oh my bad,” he said, reaching a hand out to you. “I’m Mark. My friends usually call me Mark.”
You laughed again, meeting his hand halfway with yours and shaking once. “Y/n.”
“Dang, that’s a cool name,” he said. “It totally suits you.”
You cocked your head slightly, his words igniting a spark in you. “I’d hope so,” you replied. “Had it for 20 years.”
“Oh cool, you’re like a year younger than me,” he replied. “Second year?”
You nodded, taking in his features for a second. His warm smile and doe eyes were inviting, yet the way his chiseled jawline framed strands of sapphire hair was hot.
You stayed quiet for a second, before he broke the silence. “Listen, I gotta head to my evening class. But would you wanna like, grab a coffee or something? Or like, maybe get dinner? It’s a 3-hour lecture so I’ll be out kinda late but I’m probably gonna grab some takeout-”
His rambling was endearing. You cut him off with an eager nod, swinging your bag over your shoulder. “I’ll like, totally text you. Yo.” you said.
With an amused smile, you looked back once as you made your way to the elevator and disappeared between the twin doors. He kept his gaze on you from across the room, sticking his hands into the pockets of his baggy jeans and smiling back.
The amusing encounter was the start of a whole new chapter for you.

“How quickly they turn sour, so be careful who you screw.”
College came and went quicker than you imagined it would. What took years of mental preparation seemed to fly by, the end of every semester always catching you by surprise.
You and Mark stuck together through the end of your college career. While he graduated a year earlier than you, he still visited every week of your last year, bringing you iced coffee and showering you with kisses as you studied in your same spot at the library. His friends also took a liking to you, and you were happier than you’d ever been before when you were around him.
Mark graduated with a degree in biology, getting a prestigious post-college internship at a research institution almost immediately after graduating. You completed your courses in business, excelling in all of them, grateful you had so many friends and a loving boyfriend for a support system.
And then you graduated, walking the stage in a dark blue dress (per Mark’s request), basking in the cheers of Mark and his friends, who made obnoxious neon signs and bought you the biggest gift basket you’d ever seen.
You began your work at a small ad agency, spending hours producing digital ads and writing pieces, coming home to your little shared apartment with Mark. It was a dingy box on the South Side, but with a little decorating, the two of you fell in love with the way it brought you closer together.
You enjoyed the months you couldn’t afford a mattress yet, keeping each other warm on the carpeted floor and using spare jackets as blankets. You bargained for furniture at secondhand shops, scoring the jackpot when you picked up the velvet couch of your dreams, one which you’d quickly come to spend most of your time on. The little kitchen table that only seated two, which proved a problem when you had friends over. But one that the two of you enjoyed home-cooked meals and greasy takeout on together, every night that you possibly could.
Mark was gentle with you. He was funny, outgoing, and smarter than anyone you’d ever known. You wondered sometimes what you did to deserve him. The two of you grew up together, much like you and Felix once did.
After graduation, Mark dyed his hair black for the first time in years, which you simply couldn’t get enough of. You lost weight after college, transitioning your closet from comfortable hoodies and sweatpants to dresses and blouses. The two of you coordinated outfits on errand days, which his friends never ceased teasing you for.
And you were happy. Truly and honestly happy.
One rainy Wednesday night, Mark took you out, deeming it a celebratory event following your raise at work.
“Here’s to… money,” Mark said with a smile, bringing his glass up to yours with a little clink.
You weren’t hard to please, requesting the celebratory meal be at your favorite ramen shop a couple blocks away. Mark insisted on something fancier, but let you pick your first choice in the end. He never pressured you, one of the many things you loved about him.
In between slurping noodles and telling tales of work, you were interrupted by music playing on the television high on the wall, drowning out Mark’s story with loud rap.
“Jeez,” you remarked. “Can’t they lower that? That’s so annoying.”
Mark adjusted his body toward the tv, bobbing his head at the thumping beat. “I dunno, I kinda like it.”
You scoffed. “This garbage? You’re crazy.”
He kept his eyes glued to the tv, eyebrows furrowed in a teasing manner as he continued to bob his head along and ad-lib the loud singing.
“Maniac... Maniac,” he hummed along, laughing at the screen and craning his head to keep watching.
You watched too, eyes glued to the colorful outfits and coordinated dancing. Your eyes scanned over the lyrics on the screen, realizing at this point that the song wasn’t in English.
if you think I’m just pure and innocent, you’re wrong,
when a favor continues, people think it’s their right, toxic,
this is what drives me crazy, warning
As a deep voice filled the room, your eyes remained glued to the figure in a green coat and purple beanie, heart stopping briefly in your chest while your mind raced a million miles per minute.
The familiarity of every feature grazed your conscience with a rude awakening.
You watched as the screen panned to someone with red hair, and another with purple hair. It was a few seconds before you spotted him again, a longer shot of him looking up at impressive skyscrapers. But it confirmed your theory.
It was Felix.
Mark’s singing began to annoy you now, the whole restaurant flooding with the same catchy chorus, most eaters now also craning their necks to watch the colorful group dance in sync.
“Could you stop?” you said suddenly, and Mark turned to you with a confused expression.
“Stop what?” he asked, questioning your sudden change of tone.
You didn’t answer, prodding at the noodles left in your bowl with chopsticks. The song overhead finished, transitioning to a slower song sung by a Korean woman this time.
“Y/n?” Mark asked again, waving a hand in front of you as your brows furrowed relentlessly at the dinner in front of you.
“Nothing,” you replied. “I was talking to my chopsticks. Sorry.”
Mark nodded, glancing back up at the screen and evidently thinking nothing of it. “She’s good,” he said. “Do you think she’s actually playing the piano?”
You didn’t answer, your brain and heart still racing with emotions that made you want to scream from atop a skyscraper. Any appetite you previously had for celebration dissipated quickly.
*
Their group wasn’t bad. Not by any means.
You did your research carefully, strategically logging out of your shared Youtube account with Mark to binge their music videos and interviews.
Felix seemed to have gone through a million different hair colors already. Black, green, silver, red, pink, even a long blonde wig which you liked more than you cared to admit.
You watched his interviews, picking him out from the group of 8 every time, keeping your focus on his mannerisms and crafted responses to superficial questions.
You quickly came to realize not much had changed about him. They dubbed him brownie boy- a name which you chuckled at in a melancholy tone, remembering the taste of them all too well. He loved dancing. He smiled after almost everything he said. His freckles were still his most prominent feature.
He even spoke of his hometown, telling an interviewer how much he’d hoped to visit again someday. Something you scoffed at, knowing all too well he must be too caught up in the glitz and glamor to give two shits about all of this.
It became an addiction for a few weeks, picking apart anything he said and interpreting where he’d been, what he’d seen out there. Who he might have fucked after you.
But the clips pointed you nowhere, filling your mind with useless knowledge about his various taekwondo medals and first impressions of his members.
And just like it entered, your new fixation exited your routine suddenly.
You tossed your phone on your bed one night, letting out an exasperated sigh after closing three tabs of useless articles and finding nothing in them.
“You good?” Mark asked.
You pinched the bridge of your nose in frustration. “Just stressed.”
He turned to face you, placing his phone down by his pillow as well.
“Is it that new thing at work?”
You rested your cheek on your hand, turning to face him too, noting the genuine look of care in his widened eyes.
“Yeah,” you replied. “Something like that.”
He held his gaze on yours for a minute, his eyes stretching into a smile as he let out a little laugh.
“Well you know I’m always here for you. Do you want to, like, talk about it or something?”
You smiled back at him, shaking your head in response.
There was no feasible explanation as to why you were bothered by the whole thing. The whole affair was nearly 5 years old now- you were a completely different person at that time. Maybe it was the idea of giving your body to someone who was so unchanged by it, he’d moved on to a whole new life without so much as a phone call. You loved Mark. You wouldn’t trade the relationship between you two for anything- or rather, anyone. But the pent up anger from being a side piece to someone who only pretended to care about you to get in your pants was hard to ignore.
“Y/n?” Mark interrupted, and your gaze snapped back to his, humming in question.
“I asked if you were in the mood tonight.” He repeated shyly.
“Oh, uh. Yeah! Sure.” You tried to slide your shorts off awkwardly, the knot on your waistband getting stuck as you rushed to fulfill his ask.
“Stupid pants,” you said, fumbling clumsily with them and quickly getting angry.
He raised an eyebrow. “It’s okay, we don’t have to do anything tonight. I’m kinda beat anyway.”
You fiddled with the knot some more, keeping your gaze away from his now, hoping he wouldn’t notice any change in your demeanor.
“No no, it’s cool,” you replied dryly. “Seriously, I want to.”
Mark reached over, pressing a chaste kiss to your forehead and retying the string on your pajama shorts.
“I’m not doing anything when you’re all distracted. It’s not right. Go to sleep. Tomorrow we’ll go somewhere for breakfast, yeah?”
With one hand gently grazing over your stomach, he reached over your small frame, turning out the lamp and pulling you closer as darkness washed over the room. A small sliver of moonlight through the window shone over your face, and you hoped Mark wouldn’t notice the single tear running down your cheek.
*
“Do the wires in your mind get sewn together, rubbed and severed by the heat?”
The whole thing was stupid. You knew that, and you couldn’t keep doing this to Mark.
He’d been there for you since the start of your life without Felix, and you never had to doubt the love he had for you. Mark was a permanent fixture in your otherwise monotonous life and the only interesting thing about it, at that.
Maybe this was the universe’s way of reminding you to be grateful for what was here.
And that you were. You made it up to Mark several times since that week, surprising him with new lingerie sets when you could, and cooking a week’s worth of his favorite meals.
“It’s not even my birthday…” he’d always remark through hungry kisses, barely having time to set aside his briefcase before you dropped to your knees and finished him off right there in the hallway.
And things seemed to go back to normal.
Or at least you thought.
The business campaign you were working on was stressful- that, you hadn’t lied to Mark about.
Late nights turned into early mornings in front of your laptop, typing away at spreadsheets and pulling together presentation decks for your boss.
Mark typically knew when to leave you alone, only interrupting to bring you hot coffee and little snacks late into the night, until he’d fall asleep in the bedroom and wait for you to join. Sometimes, your work consumed your ability to sleep.
Tonight, after dinner, Mark tended to his usual routine of brewing you a cup of coffee, knowing it was going to be another late night for you.
Just a few more days of this, you promised him.
He wasn’t mad at your dedication to your work, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t miss cuddling in bed together.
“Shit,” you heard him say loudly. “We’re out of creamer.”
You glanced up over your laptop.
“Darn. I’ll just have it plain.”
He bent down to the first level of the fridge, peering around like a bottle might suddenly appear.
“Nah, I’ll go buy some. I’ll just be a few,” he said, closing the door and adjusting the knit black beanie on his head.
You looked up at him again, feeling a sense of guilt as he scanned the granite counter for his car keys.
“No no, you stay,” you said to him, lowering your laptop screen but not closing it fully. “I’ll go. I need a break anyway.”
He cocked his head a little. “I don’t even think the grocery store is open this late. Let me go to the convenience store and get one of those small cartons.”
You shook your head again, standing up and reaching for the keys that had been in your eyesight the whole time.
“I’ll go to the one further away. No biggie.”
Mark smirked a little as you pulled on your sneakers. “You’re getting in the way of my plan to secretly buy those cookies I like.”
You let out a gentle laugh, pressing a kiss to his cheek and slinging your purse over your shoulder.
“Was already on my shopping list, silly.”
“Love you!” He shouted behind you, laughing as you jokingly waved him off and made your way to your car.
Your favorite convenience store was a few minutes away, by your parents’ house. They didn’t have an extensive selection of groceries, but they did have vanilla coffee creamer, and Mark’s favorite cookies. And that was enough to keep you coming back.
It was the same convenience store you’d practically grown up at, piling rice balls and mochi donuts on the counter after every drunken night out.
So much that the staff knew you by name, often “forgetting” to scan an item or two and keeping it a secret from the store manager.
The little bell chime indicated your entrance, and right away you were met with enthusiastic greetings from the employees.
“Y/n!” the regular employee exclaimed, ushering you to the newly placed display of rice balls.
You chuckled in response. “Just here for creamer, actually! But that is very tempting.”
You made your way around the display to the fridge, grabbing two bottles and hastily finding your place in line.
Only two people stood in front of you, and you scrolled through social media on your phone as they rang up their items and trickled out of the store.
At your turn, you placed both bottles on the counter, suddenly remembering Mark’s cookies you’d forgotten. “Sorry, let me grab one more thing!”
You sauntered two aisles down to the cookies while the cashier scanned, and then stopped when you noticed one box left on the shelf. One that was already being carefully examined by another shopper.
Feeling a sense of discouragement, you pretended to look over the other options, knowing very well Mark didn’t like just any option. He was always very passionate in his request for jam-filled shortbreads.
The shopper stood tall, back faced to you, as they scanned the nutrition labels and shifted the box around in their grip.
Just decide, you urged them mentally.
“Excuse me, are there any more of those?” You spoke suddenly, surprising yourself with your rather sharp tone.
He turned on his heel, a serious expression on his face as his eyes met with the rushed voice.
And you knew immediately.
Despite the black beanie pulled snugly over his locks, oversized hoodie that swallowed his figure, and a thin black mask covering his nose and mouth, you knew in his eyes.
Almond brown eyes filled with warmth and intensity, offset by the familiar beige galaxies that scattered across his eyelids, the rest concealed by his dark mask. What a shame it was, to cover something so beautiful.
You could tell he knew, too, his gaze fixated on yours for a minute, saying nothing as he maintained his tenacious grip on the cardboard box. Your thoughts ran at a record pace, swirling around your head like harsh waves in a tsunami, searching for something- anything to cling on to.
Say nothing, you told yourself. Leave.
And before he could get a word out, you dropped your gaze to the tiled floor below him. “Nevermind. You can keep them.”
The convenience store spun all around you, much like the storm brewing in your head, as you practically sprinted back to the counter and slapped a twenty in front of the employee, who’d already bagged your coffee creamers.
“Keep the change,” you said to him, before snatching the bag off the counter and making a beeline for your car.
Your hands shook as you put the key in the ignition, seeing him exit the store out of your peripheral vision. Like a lost animal searching for safety, his head scanned over the cars in the parking lot, stopping in dismay as he recognized you again, this time through your foggy car window.
Your head remained straight, forced tunnel vision on the giant soda advert plastered on the window of the store in front of you.
And without so much as a glance in his direction, you made your way out of the lot and back toward your apartment.
*
Hours spent replaying the interaction in your head quickly turned to days, and Mark could tell once again that something wasn’t right. You felt yourself sink back into that place of uncertainty and unresolved doubts.
On top of that, your daily routine was beginning to drive you crazy. Wake up, work, come home, work.
Sleep. Repeat.
It also didn’t help that things between you and Mark had fallen tense in the past few weeks.
Nights you worked late, he often did too, staying at the lab for a few hours extra and coming home more tired than ever. You tried to initiate intimacy with him, but it seemed he was the one declining lately.
During your few minutes together before work, you broke the groggy silence to speak.
“I need to go to my parents’ for a few days.”
He furrowed his eyebrows at you, cocking his head while chewing his toast. “Your parents’ place? Like, across town? Why?”
You shrugged, swirling a spoon around in your bowl of cereal.
“I need some time. And space.”
He swallowed his bite of toast dramatically. “Are you- I mean, are we okay?”
You reassured him with a small smile. “Yeah, we’re okay. It’s just the stress of work and life. Want to make sure I get time to say hi to mom and dad, you know?”
Mark nodded. “Yeah, for sure. When are you planning on going?”
You got up from your seat at the table, bringing your bowl to the sink and giving it a light rinse. “Tonight. I’m just gonna pack a bag and go straight there after work. I already let my boss know I’ll be out for a couple days.”
Mark nodded again. “Okay, well say hi to them for me. I’ll hold down the fort over here.”
You walked over to him, pressing a little kiss to his temple, and grabbed your laptop.
“We’re okay,” you repeated. “And I love you.”
He didn’t respond, looking down  at his food as he pondered your words.
You left for work earlier than usual, stuffing a duffel bag of clothes in your trunk and letting your parents know you’d be there later. The work day went by slowly, projects and emails confirming that you did indeed need a few days away from all this. By the time the end of the day finally rolled around, you wasted no time booking it to your car and changing out your heels for a pair of sneakers.
*
Your childhood home was on the other side of town, but the rush hour of traffic on a Friday evening doubled the time it took for you to get there. When you did, mom was already out for her night shift, and dad wasn’t even home for the week.
Maybe coming here for the purpose of saying hi to mom and dad was a bit of a lie. But you had been honest to Mark about needing time and space. And several days off. Days you hoped to spend curled up in your childhood bed catching up on sleep.
Your room was largely unchanged. There were still little holes scattered on the walls from where your posters were hung with thumbtacks, but the walls remained void of any new decor. The carpet was the same too, down to the prominent coffee stain you’d gotten on it nearly a decade ago. Your window still gave a clear view of the streets beyond yours, framed artistically by overgrown vines in the front yard.
With a deep sigh, you leaned against the frame of the sill, soaking in the familiarity of it all. It was just like you remembered, and a part of you almost hoped you’d see something different. Maybe even someone.
There was no doubt that the room brought memories of Felix flooding right back. You still remembered the way he’d knock on your window, always giving three straight thumps so you’d know it was him. A habit you found funny, remembering that he’d warn you not to open the window for any less than 3 knocks- because “2 knocks could be a serial killer’s greeting. And one knock could be a bear.”
These walls had heard some of the most obscene confessions, seen some of the most indecorous outfits you’d wear for him and only him. And yet, you found solace in knowing that they also housed some of the most intimate crying sessions, giddy laughter, and a blossoming relationship that would follow you so many years later.
You stepped away from the window, finally making way to your bed and lying down with an exasperated sigh. Maybe a part of you hoped Felix was still in town. Maybe a part of you even came here on the off-chance he would come visit.
Thoughts you shoved to the back of your mind, not having the emotional capacity to deal with the idea that you longed to experience it all over again.
*
Mornings in your parents’ house were nothing like the way they were at Felix’s. Mom was always asleep for the day, having come home early in the morning from her shift. Dad usually wasn’t home.
Such was the way things were when you awoke the next morning, birds chirping outside your window to indicate the start of a new, sunny day. You rolled over in your tangled sheets, squinting heavy eyes at your alarm clock and catching a glimpse of the time.
9:46am.
You’d surprised yourself with how tired you were, stretching your limbs lazily and staring at the blank ceiling above you. When you finally sat up in bed, the smell of breakfast hit your nose instantly.
The house filled with scents of grilled meat and freshly brewed coffee, and you could make out the faint noises of the toaster popping and oil sizzling.
Mom must have prepared breakfast for your return today. You wasted no time putting on your house slippers and bolting out the door to greet her, already appreciative of her kind gesture. When you turned the corner into the kitchen, a foreign sight caught you off guard.
Your mom stood in front of the stove, scrambling eggs around in a frying pan as you’d predicted.
And sat at the dinner table, stuffing forkfuls of Canadian bacon and sips of hot coffee in his mouth, was Felix.
You audibly gasped, and Felix looked up from his plate to acknowledge you.
He wore a plain white t-shirt, his straight hair hung loosely around his face with no particular placement, yet still somehow perfectly styled.
A pair of silver earrings dangled by his neck as he looked up at you, mouth full of food. In an instant, he pushed his chair out from behind him and stood up, saying nothing as he continued to chew. Without the ability to talk, he gave you a small wave, which you ignored.
You were suddenly self-conscious of your own appearance, looking far too casual in a tank top and shorts, house slippers loudly announcing you’d only just woken up. Your hair was still in yesterday’s work bun almost falling out of the flimsy hair tie, and the lack of makeup was more than hard on the eyes.
Before he could finish chewing to get a sentence out, you shouted out to your mom, who still hadn’t noticed your arrival. “Taking a really important work call in the other room, could you keep it down please?”
She shouted back over the loud sounds of oil sizzling.
“Sure thing, but look who’s here! Ah, it’s burning! Hold on,” And she turned her attention back to the stove.
You looked over at Felix again, who’d finished chewing at this point, still standing awkwardly in front of his plate and fiddling his hands together like a lost child.
“Oh… it’s nice to meet you.” You said, with a little bow, turning around quickly and disappearing back into your room.
You refused to entertain this. You weren’t going to give him what he wanted, to pretend he was interested in your life just to get in your pants one more time. You’d humiliated yourself enough the first time.
Back in your room, you locked the door with force and shoved your desk chair under the knob, triple-checking to ensure it couldn’t be opened. You shut the blinds and hopped back into your bed, wrapping the comforter around you and trying your best to steady your breathing. But it was no use; the tears began anyway.
You can’t remember how long you cried- it must have been hours before you drifted off to sleep again. When you woke up for the second time that day, it was well past 5 in the afternoon.
Your skin was sticky with sweat and your hair was begging to be let out of its knotted mess. When you rolled out of bed, a pounding headache made itself present. Crying and sleeping for hours were always a lethal combination.
After a long shower and some time to think it over, you felt small and stupid again. Were you doing the right thing? What was the point of coming here if not for closure? Why were you even here?
A fleeting voice told you to ditch the whole trip and go back to the apartment. Back to your safe space with Mark, where the two of you could marathon dumb movies and make love on the couch like you always did.
But you quickly dismissed the thought, reminding yourself that you weren’t going to let some dumb fling drive you away from a much-needed vacation at your parents’ place. When you confirmed that the coast was clear, you made your way back out to the kitchen, where your mom sat at the dinner table with a book.
“Hi honey,” she said. “We waited for you, figured you got caught up in that work call of yours.” A slight raise of her eyebrow indicated she knew.
You sighed, sitting on the chair across from her.
“Want to tell me what happened?” She asked.
You shook your head. “Things are just difficult right now. I don’t want to get caught up in… things that I shouldn’t.”
She nodded, setting her book down. “He left you a little gift in the corridor.”
Then she got up from her seat and hoisted her purse over her shoulder. “Leaving for the evening- make sure you lock all the windows before you sleep.”
When she was out of sight, you made your way to the corridor, finding a little white box on the console table by the entrance. It was wrapped neatly with a blue ribbon, in typical Felix fashion. You pulled one end, watching the tie come undone, and carefully lifted one end to reveal the contents inside.
The scent hit you before the sight, and you knew instantly. His signature baked goods.
*
You were up much earlier the next morning. The fresh summer air beckoned you to go outside, which you did, completing an almost 3-mile jog. Post-exercise, you ate a full breakfast, and then called Mark, his phone going straight to voicemail.
It wasn’t typical of Mark to sleep in, but you knew he was busy at the lab late these days, so you opted for a quick text instead.
Late night again? Call me when you can. Love you :)
There was something so freeing about having no plans, no to-do list, and better yet, no monotonous routine like you had most days.It was like you could do anything you wanted while you were here- which you did. You watched old reruns of cartoons, flipped through ancient yearbooks kept in boxes out in the storage shed, and even repaired some of the flawed spots on your walls with a can of white paint you found. You also finished piles of chores around the house for your parents, going so far as to fold and hang all their laundry for them. By the time you’d put away the last of the socks, it was well past 5 in the afternoon.
The loud sound of the doorbell startled you from inside your parents’ shared closet. Had they been expecting any packages? The gardener, perhaps? You cautiously made your way to the front door, smoothing down your blouse and adjusting your shorts that had ridden up while you worked. You unlatched the door and opened it, feeling a drop in your chest as you locked eyes with the figure.
“Hi,” he said, keeping his gaze locked on yours.
You cleared your throat. “Hi…Can I…help you?”
His lips parted slightly, closing again as his expression changed to that of dejection.
“Um… I just came to drop this off.”
You looked at his hands; which clutched a little white envelope.
“Okay,” you replied, reaching out to take it from him. He pulled his hands back a little so that the envelope was just out of reach.
You looked up at him again with a questioning look.
“Did I… I mean, how are you?” He asked awkwardly.
“Me?” You said in reply, feeling annoyed at his persistence for an interaction. “Is this a new mailman greeting? I’m good. Can I get my mail now?”
Your heart dropped as soon as you finished speaking. It was a despicable bit you kept up, enough to hurt even yourself.
His lips pulled together in a thin line, raising his eyebrows and looking down at his feet.
“Ouch. Yeah, here you go.” He handed you the envelope, turning around and marching off without a word.
You watched his head hang as he took confident strides away from you, getting farther out of reach with each passing second.
“Wait,” you called after him, a moot point as he only kept walking.
As soon as he was out of sight, you slammed the front door, eyes welling up with tears as you slid down the door and dropped to the floor. Why had you said something so stupid? You imagined yourself in his shoes briefly, shaking your head at the thought of him reducing your existence to that of a delivery person.
It was the third time this week you’d fucked up a chance at making amends with Felix. And by far the worst one- there was no way he’d be back any time soon. Or ever again, for that matter.
You wiped tears with the back of your hand, suddenly remembering the letter he came here to drop off. After a few deep breaths, you examined it in your shaky hands, thumbing over the ink on the back that spelled your name. His handwriting looked the same as it did so many years ago- so neat and carefully placed. You tore it open timidly, pulling out a little yellow card.
Y/n,
It’s been a while
I hope you still like brownies!
I’m going to the new coffee shop across the street tomorrow if you’d like to join
9am?
PS- I’m sorry for dropping by unannounced!
You read the letter once, then twice, then six more times before you could even comprehend what it was.
Despite your ingenuous behavior all week, he was still willing to try and fix things with you. That was, up until a few minutes ago. The invitation still sat in your hand, but it would be a miracle if he agreed to go anywhere near you after the stunt you pulled.
You tossed the letter aside, burying a tear-stained face in your hands as you began to cry again at the thought that you’d likely never see him again.
He’d slipped through your fingers yet again, only this time, it was entirely your fault.
*
“You’re wasting your time with lame excuses and lies”
Why were you even trying? In what universe would Felix agree to see you again after the stunt you pulled?
It didn’t matter. Chalk it up to pure delusion and naivety, but you were up bright and early, all dressed up and ready to meet for coffee with him. If he didn’t show, you’d surely owe him an apology, which your ego silently prayed you wouldn’t have to track him down to deliver. And if he did, things would be unbearably awkward. You’d lose either way- but that’s not to say he hadn’t already had his share of loss dealing with your abhorrent attitude.
You were grateful you packed some of your nicer clothes while you stayed at your parents’. You’d settled on a feminine white peasant top, a pair of fitted slacks, and spent the morning curling your hair to convince him you weren’t always an unpresentable slob despite the way you’d appeared all week.
When you arrived, the shop was teeming with young couples and coffee connoisseurs. The lively atmosphere combined with gloomy warm lighting made for a romantic date location- forcing you to remind yourself that this was not in fact a date. You verily assumed it to be a working session- one where you two would sort out the awkward encounters and establish boundaries again. Followed by some brief small talk and a proper send-off so that you could finally shut him out of your mind for good.
A short staircase led you to the upper level, where most of the tables were neatly decorated with glass vases of daisies that thrived in the sun beams illuminated along the rows of windows. You clutched your bag, looking around nervously and trying your best to steady the rapid thump of your heartbeat in your throat. Couples. Couples. A family. A pair of sisters.
And on the last table, Felix.
He looked mature in a sleek white turtleneck and dangly silver earrings, his ashy locks tucked neatly behind both ears. As you approached the table, he looked up for a brief second, shifting his eyes away once again as you pulled out the chair across from him and took a seat.
You waited for him to say something, which he didn’t.
Conversely, your pride didn’t allow you to speak first.
“You’re blonde,” you said suddenly, your voice coming out much shakier than you had anticipated.
He focused on you again, expression unchanged.
“So you do remember me.”

So what was his marvelous plan? He was just gonna swing by his house, web his jacket and shorts, and swing over as fast as he could; the issue with this plan? He would’ve been 3 minutes late and he couldn’t take that. He could text you but your words rang through his head like a bell:
“don’t. be. late."
It was the one thing you asked of him and he couldn’t even do that. Reveal his identity? He didn’t even tell his own parents, let alone yours; forget it. Maybe just go to your window, web the clothes, change on the fire escape, swing down and ring your doorbell? That seemed like the best plan in the moment. So, Miles carried out the act; he was whimsical, quick and still managed to make it the only issue? He was a minute late.
“Where is he?” you mumbled to yourself
Suddenly, you heard a knock at the door and your parents voice:
“Hello, young man. How can I help you?” your parent asked
“Uhm, I am here for, Y/n. We’re dating and I was supposed to meet you” Miles said, nervously.
“Why did I add in the dating part?” Miles questioned in his head
“Oh! Well, hi; I’m Y/n’s mom. Don’t mind (y/d/n dads name), can be a bit mean” your mom answered
“It’s okay. It’s nice to meet you both. I’m Miles” Miles said, his voice still trembling
“Well nice to meet you, Miles! Y/n has told us so much about you, you’re all she talks about” Your mom said
“Mom!” you said
“Hey, Miles. You can set your jacket down in the closet” you said
“Okay” he obliged
Miles began to take off his shoes out of habit when your dad jumped in:
“woah dude, what are you doing?"
“Oh! It’s customary to remove your shoes in my house. It shows you have respect for someones house by not tracking dirt in” Miles informed
“oh. well don’t get too comfortable here, we don’t do that.” Your dad said, sternly
“Yes sir. I’m sorry.” Miles said, feeling embarrassed
“Y/d/n! Don’t be so mean to the boy.” your mom scolded
“He’s the one taking off his shoes and shit.” your dad said.
“Dad!” you started
“It’s okay, y/n. I mean it.” Miles reassured
The rest of the meal and day went well. Miles gave your mom the flowers, he reintroduced himself to your dad and gained a bit of his respect, and he managed to make them both laugh. You thought the meal couldn’t get any better until your dad brought out your favorite game:
“Let’s play Uno"
“Oh yay! I love uno but someone always beats me at it” your mom said looking at you
“Well what can I say? I’m the champ” you said, proudly
“Miles, are you good at Uno?” your dad asked, patting him on the neck
“yeah I’m pretty okay at it. Y/n always beats me tho” he replied with a smirk
“Hey maybe we can team up on her” your dad laughed
“Hey! No fair!” you laughed
“you know we’re kidding, y/n” your mom said before gesturing to Miles and your dad to team up
The cards were dealt and before you knew it, you had been down to your last two cards. Just when you thought you were about to sweep and win again, Miles puts down a +4 which you prepared for but what you weren’t expecting was for your mom and dad to put one down going back to miles who whispered an “I’m sorry” to you and put down another +4.
Your heart dropped in horror; you know were forced to pick up 20 cards. You stared in disbelief while Miles smirked and your parents picked up the cards and slid them over to you. You slammed your hand on the cards and slowly dragged them over to you.
“Hijo de puta” you cursed under your breath
“Hey don’t curse because you got +20’d” Miles laughed with a smug smile
As your entire family was laughing at you, Miles froze. You knew this look all too well because this was the look he gets when his senses go off. You looked in his eyes and followed his gaze to a man in a full black attire with spots, staring at you. Your breath hitched and your family took notice
“Is everything alright, y/n?"
“Mhm” you said, your mouth becoming dry
“I have to go. I am so sorry, something came up with my parents” Miles said
“Oh okay! It was nice having you, feel free to come by anytime” Your mom said as Miles rushed outside, stripping on the way
“What was his deal?” your dad asked
“His parents needed him for something” you lied
“They couldn’t wait until I showed him my rare coin collection?” your dad chuckled
All you could do was laugh and smile at your dad.
“Oh look! It’s spider-man!” your mom exclaimed
You snapped your head in that direction, earning a crack from your neck and you saw Miles getting rocked while the man in black escaped into a portal. You texted Miles:
You: Is everything alright?
Miles: notreally
You: Can I help?
Miles: nosorry
Miles: I’m gonna be gone for a while. This guy is bigger than I thought. In case I don’t come back, Mami; I had a great time and I love you
You: Miles don’t say that you’re gonna come back
You: You always do
You: Miles?

╰┈➤ summary : you and your reliable partner grim are the most famous interdimensional travelers under the Official Isekai Association. you're used to traveling into psychological thrillers and horrors. however, this time something goes wrong, and you suddenly turn into the protagonist of… an otome game?!
— characters : jade leech, leona kingscholar | kalim al-asim, azul ashengrotto | lilia vanrouge, idia shroud
⌞tags⌝ : gn reader, fluff at times, occasional angst (more angst for kalim's & azul's parts actually), typical manhwas tropes, mention of a typical isekai manhwa death by truck hit... yeah, you go from the first route to the last (from jade to idia), hence the parts are connected
— w.c. : 6.4k+

⌞notes⌝ : continuing with the second part of the series ~

Based on your expression, is the walkthrough going smoothly?”
Grim asked, jumping on the bed you were laying at, and placed his head on your stomach, chewing something smelling like fish, and you hated the fact you were still not recovered after being pointed out what you smell like by Leona.
“I mean, I can’t see the progress, given you’re the protagonist for this genre,” Grim noticed. “How many are left tho?”
So that's how it looked from someone else’s perspective. Just routes to finish, game characters, literary images, not people who could feel, have their own personalities, and… Feel something for you. You have never thought about otome games before, they were out of your qualification, and now you were sure enough that once you escape this world, you’ll ask your boss to never transmigrate you to otome genre ever again.
Funny enough, you’re used to dating. Sometimes counterfeiting feelings was a key to the true ending, so you just had to do that at times, but you never actually felt something yourself. And surely you didn't feel loved.
“Four,” you answered after a short pause, closing your eyes.
“Make sure to do your job well, henchman,” Grim yawned. “I’ll help you with my magic!”
“Yes…” You replied vaguely, appreciating that thanks to Grim you were given an opportunity to even stay here in NRC, considering you possessed no magic. “I’ll try my best…”
Even if you wanted to leave as soon as you could, having no desire to leave these people all alone after you suddenly crashed into their lives.
You couldn’t find a proper way to name all the boys routes of whom you needed to… finish. Targets? Characters? Lovers? No, that wasn’t it.
In any case, you checked Kalim Al-Asim’s profile before heading to school. A bright, cheerful person radiating nothing but happiness and joy, a complete opposite of your gloomy and indifferent self. You presumed he would be easy to approach, given how easy-going he seemed, but his social status made you question the ease of the walkthrough.
A son of a wealthy merchant, close to royalty again. Fine, you wondered if going through Leona’s route made you stronger and more experienced.
After a half of the day passed you’ve realized you couldn’t find Kalim that easily as you first thought you would. Probably he was being more secure than Leona, and you tried your best investigating where he could be. Most obviously somewhere in his dormitory, Scarabia, but you preferred not to enter the dormitories itselves, ‘playing’ on neutral waters. The transmigrator currency was still the same, because you were paid only after completing the whole story, so you ran out of money to buy the info about Kalim’s location.
After the classes you also realized you haven’t had enough sleep because of memories made with Leona haunting you at night, and you most probably needed to brew some coffee, which caused you to remember Jade and frown.
No, it’s not the right time to think about them, you thought, entering the school’s kitchen and stumbling upon someone, your forehead hitting someone else’s.
“Oh, I’m very sorry, I didn’t notice… Huh?”
You raised your head, pressing a hand to your forehead, and gasped when you realized it was none other than Kalim Al-Asim, who was mirroring your actions and massaging his head with his hand.
“Oh, isn’t it Yuu! Nice to meet you! I’m Kalim Al-Asim, but you can call me Kalim!”
You were spellbound to say something at the moment, appreciating his wonderful appearance and drowning in the melted gold of his eyes.
“Nice to meet you too— Eh?”
Before you wanted to continue, a pink glow above his head made you jolt.
The heart icon was already filled up to half of it.
Your eyes widened. You’ve only met him! And you were sure that you hadn't met him earlier in previous walkthroughs, so how?..
“Oh, did I hit you too hard?! Oh no, what to do… Jamil, we should call a doctor!!”
Kalim’s face radiating genuine worry appeared too close to yours, and you realized that you fell silent extremely suddenly. You shook your head, replying with a confused smile.
“I’m alright, just lost in thoughts. How are you, though? I hit you too…”
“I’m okay!” He giggled at you, and his contagious laugh flowed to you, causing you to chuckle softly. “But still, we need to make sure you’re fine. Jamil, we should—”
“Yuu-san doesn’t seem to be in danger. Quit exaggerating.”
Ah, right. Jamil Viper, a person in Kalim’s profile mentioned as his personal ‘servant’.
His figure appeared behind Kalim’s back and approached you. Jamil somehow reminded you of yourself with how composed and calm he looked, observing if everything was right with your forehead. You outstretched your hand to Jamil, regaining composure.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Yuu,” you said, receiving a silent nod.
“Jamil Viper,” he replied when you two shared a handshake, but a sudden Kalim’s complaint cut your strict-seeming atmosphere.
“I want to shake your hand too, Yuu!!”
“Okay, no problem?..”
You watched through him, focusing on the heart icon filled up to the half, and deepened into your thoughts.
Apparently the icon was filled thrice, and all three times symbolized three significant events happening throughout the routes. But given you two just met… Wasn’t the system making mistakes?
“Did you want to use the kitchen? You can join us! We’re preparing dishes for the party held in Scarabia. Right, join us at the party, too!!”
“You surely are enthusiastic, Kalim,” you smiled at him.
“Stop inviting everyone without thinking twice,” Jamil sighed. “Not to be rude to you, Yuu-san.”
“It’s alright, I understand. Thank you for your offer, but it’s just what Viper said. I’ll make sure to join you one day, but I’ve got plans today.”
You actually hadn’t any other plans than getting Kalim to know better, and the party was an excellent opportunity, but at the same time you didn’t want to get too deep to the point you would miss him dearly after finishing his route too. It was getting hard for you to just have friendly chats with them, then growing closer to the point you couldn’t just leave them anymore.
You wanted to play it safe with Kalim, although suspecting you would fail miserably.
“Okay! Then come tomorrow. Or the day after, we’re going to have parties every day during this week~”
“Haha, that’s very generous of you,” you giggled. “Maybe I can help you with cooking today?”
“No need, I—” Jamil started talking, but Kalim’s bright shine overlapped Jamil’s words.
“It’s a brilliant idea, Jamil works so hard, it must be really tough! Right, I’ll help too!”
“You… you stay still,” Jamil sighed with a heaviness and annoyance, then looked at you. “Yuu-san is enough. Just watch.”
“Fi~ne!”
You asked Jamil where you could find an apron, and he suddenly appeared in front of you, pulling the piece of clothing over you and tying strings behind your back.
“Oh, thank you,” you almost whispered, not expecting Jamil to be so close to you, and glanced over to catch Kalim’s sudden gaze you couldn’t decipher, but a familiar glimpse of overjoy fled from his deep eyes for a mere second, and a bitter smile grew on his face.
“Ah, I know!!” He suddenly jumped from the chair he was sitting on. “Yuu, you’re living in Ramshackle, right?!”
“Why do I feel like he’s going to suggest something crazy,” Jamil mumbled, but Kalim ignored him.
“Yes, I am,” you nodded.
“You’ll be free at 10 o’clock in the evening?”
You blinked absentmindedly.
“I guess so. Why?”
“Then just be at home at the time! You’ll see~”
“Alright?..”
You heard Jamil sighing again and decided to let it be, grabbing vegetables you needed to chop, and continued your work, accompanied by Kalim’s soft cheerful singing.
Tumblr media
You expected anything but a magic carpet ride at 10 o’clock in the evening.
“Ready, Yuu?”
“No, I’m noooooot!!—”
And with that you flew straight into the night sky followed by Kalim’s happy noises.
Actually, you thought that after dying for the very first time and then transmigrating from one world into another, make that cyclical, you would fear nothing, but suddenly soaring into the sky wasn’t included in your plans.
But after seeing the canvas of the island and the sheet of the forest, framed by the endless sea from a bird's eye view, you were so enchanted that thoughts left your head, leaving only admiration.
“It’s beautiful, right?” Kalim said, looking at you and knowing you’re not noticing.
“It is…” You whispered, remembering the same sky when you were enjoying fireworks with Jade, and shook your head. “Thank you for showing it to me!”
“He-he~ You couldn’t come to the party, so this is my apology for hitting you earlier.”
“As I’ve mentioned, it’s my fault too. I hit you too…”
“Aw come on Yuu, it’s okay. You even helped Jamil with food preparations.”
“Ah, yes,” you nodded. “He’s a wonderful cook, I wasn’t expecting!”
Corners of Kalim’s lips went slightly down, but he returned to his usual happy look when you turned to him.
“Right?? He’s incredible! There’s nothing he can’t do!”
“You surely like him, right?” You smiled at him cheerfully. “You seem to be very fond of him.”
“Don’t you think so too? You’ll realize how cool he is when you grow closer to him. Do you need any help? I’ve noticed your chemistry today~”
Your smile dropped, brows knitting together. Why would he say that?..
“I don’t think so?.. Is there any particular reason for me to get closer to Viper? Not to be offensive, of course.”
“Eh?” Kalim was obviously startled. “You don’t want to? But Jamil’s wonderful person and—”
“Kalim,” you stopped him. “I don’t quite get it at all and no, I have no intention of getting closer to Jamil. I mean, sure, I don’t know what can happen in the future, but as for the present, am I not being with you right now?”
Kalim gasped, gazing at you in surprise.
“I see he’s an important person to you, but we’re enjoying the evening together right now. Let’s talk about you instead, what do you think?”
“Oh,” he said. “You’re… what an interesting person you are, Yuu!”
“Y-yes? Me?..”
“Yeah! What do you want to know about me then?”
“Let’s see…” You hummed, returning your eyes to the sky. “Hm… suddenly I can’t think of anything.”
“People often ask if my family hires someone for a job, or does a certain facility belong to my family, or something like that… Would you like to ask something along those lines?”
“Kalim, wait, I think you’re misinterpreting my intentions,” you turned to him again, gently placing your hand above his. “I’m not going to be an employee under your family’s business. Why would you even think about it? I wanted to be friends in the first place.”
“Ah, friends!! Aren’t we friends already though?” He blinked at you. “Oh, wait, no, I should give you something!! Do you prefer gold or silver? Or maybe jewelry?”
“Kalim!!” You raised your voice, feeling a little overwhelmed. “I don’t need any of those. I was about to ask if you’re okay, it’s getting chilly…”
“Eh?”
“What?”
“Oh,” he laughed, his cheeks growing red out of shame. “Sorry, Yuu. It was just a precaution.”
“I don’t think I follow?”
“No, don’t worry. You’re an interesting person, indeed…”
You sighed, letting yourself lay down on the carpet and exhale the freshness of the night chilly air, and stare at the stars.
“I don’t know you well. It’s literally the first day we know each other,” you started. “I don’t know your circumstances and what you meant by saying it was a precaution, but… it’s alright if you don’t trust me. But I can assure you that it’s okay, I don’t mind, considering I’m an alien from another dimension, it is only natural to question my intentions. And yet I want you to know that I just want to enjoy this evening to its maximum, and your company is very pleasant to me. We can even sit still and remain silent, somehow I think you’re a safe person to stay alone with. It’s cozy. Ah, sorry, I think I went overboard… Kalim?”
You shifted your gaze to him, meeting his widened eyes and parted lips, and then you blushed, realizing you really did go overboard, saying all your thoughts so easily, but you really couldn’t help yourself.
Kalim suddenly burst into laughter, flopping down on the carpet with you and continuing giggling softly to the point that tears started accumulating in the corners of his eyes.
“Are you alright? I said something stupid, sorry…”
“You’re not just an interesting person, Yuu,” he smiled, turning his head to you, giving you a realization he was extremely close to your face. “You’re wonderful.”
“I thought Viper was,” you chuckled, smiling at him and seeing him closing his eyes.
“Jamil is wonderful, that’s true. And you’re also wonderful. But you’re…”
He fell silent, leaving you without an explanation.
“No, it’s nothing. You’re truly something. Thank you for saying all that to me, Yuu.”
“Remember, Kalim,” your hand acted on itself, grabbing his and interviewing fingers with his. “You’re wonderful, too. Appreciate yourself.”
And with a bright smile you showed to him, you also noticed the heart was filled to the max. You opened your eyes at once, jolting and causing Kalim to question what happened.
No… no, you couldn’t leave him just yet!! Not like that, not after you haven’t figured out an indescribable sadness in his eyes!!
“K-Kalim…” You mumbled, your fingers trembling slightly. “You’re still here…”
“Hm?” He tilted his head. “Of course I am, silly! Where else could I be?”
“You’re right…” You exhaled sharply, drawing him closer to you and enveloping in a tight hug. “Yes, you’re here. I’m glad.”
“Yuu?..”
His whole body was warm, and no bright light filled up the place, reassuring you that right at the moment everything was alright.
Tumblr media
Two weeks passed since you two went on a magic carpet ride, and surprisingly you two really did talk, ate together during breaks, the time seemed to stop its flow. The heart icon above Kalim’s head was glowing with soft pink, filled to the top, and you couldn’t comprehend all that was happening. Your own heart and feelings resembled a ticking bomb ready to blow with all anticipation you’ve carried.
Did he really feel something for you? But it was impossible to crush down the whole transmigrator system, you knew it was programmed just perfectly and flawlessly, never making any mistakes in its calculations. You’ve requested a percentage of Kalim’s indicators, which you never did here before since the procedure took a lot of time to analyze everything. And today it finally arrived, shocking you even more than you thought it would.
His so-called love meter was filled up to 100%, meaning he definitely fell for you, however…Why hasn’t his route finished yet?
Suddenly a familiar tall figure appeared in the entrance, and you recognized Jade glancing your way curiously.
Shit, you thought, clenching your shirt.
“Yuu? You okay?” Kalim asked you, his head on your shoulder.
You were sitting under the tree in the school yard, Jamil sitting at your left and doing homework.
“Yeah, sorry I startled your sleep.”
“Nope, I wasn’t sleeping actually. Oh, isn’t it Jade over there? Hey, Jade!”
You wanted to tell Kalim not to ask Jade to come closer, but you actually had no right to do that, and nodded politely to Leech, escaping his focused look.
“Good afternoon, Kalim-san, Jamil-san. Yuu-san,” he greeted everyone, not letting his eyes shift from you. “How interesting to see you three together. I presumed Yuu-san… No, forgive me.”
“Yuu is really fun to be with, don’t you agree?” Kalim cheerfully smiled at Jade. “Right, would you love to join us? We’re having a picnic.”
“Would be wonderf—”
“Ah,” you suddenly mumbled, attracting Jade and Kalim’s attention. “Sorry, I think I should get going soon. You three may continue, though, I’m sorry…”
“Eh?” Kalim looked at you. “I thought you wanted to become friends with Jade?..”
“... Apparently Yuu-san is feeling uncomfortable in my presence,” Jade smiled slyly. “It is quite alright. I’ll get going then.”
“Ah, no, I… And he’s gone.” You whispered to yourself.
Right. It wasn’t his route. Anymore.
And before Kalim managed to ask you if you actually wanted to befriend Jade and that he could help, you all saw Leona approaching you with a strange look on his face.
This day will be the death of you, really.
“Hello, Leona—”
“Herbivore,” Leona interrupted Kalim’s cheerful greeting. “Care to explain what the hell?”
“What do you mean, Leo… Kingscholar,” you carried a habit of calling your current ‘love interests’ by their name, and since Leona’s heart already disappeared, you shook your head.
“You smell like me. And to remind you, we’ve interacted only once when you stepped on my tail.”
Kalim’s smile dropped, and his usually bright and warm features turned into worried and sad, which wasn’t left unnoticed by Jamil, who apparently had enough.
“I… I have no idea…”
“Senpai,” Jamil suddenly said, grabbing Leona’s hand. “Let me explain.”
“Hah?” Leona asked, annoyed. “The hell?”
“Just. Let me. Explain. Okay?”
Jamil looked at you with an expression saying ‘talk to Kalim immediately or I’ll punch you’, to which you gulped and nodded, thanking him silently.
“You’re so popular, Yuu!” Kalim said when Jamil forcefully dragged Leona out. “Everyone wants to get closer to you! Still don’t want me to help you with Jamil? His eyes were so dreamy when he looked at you just now!”
His eyes most definitely weren’t dreamy at all, though…
“Kalim,” you turned to him, taking his hands in yours and looking at him with all the seriousness you’ve got. “Stop misinterpreting my feelings. Please?”
“What do you mean?..”
“Be a little more selfish!” You pushed. “And please don’t decide for me or for Jamil or for anyone else. If I wanted to befriend Jamil, or Jade, or Leona, or—agh it doesn’t matter who exactly!—believe me, I would do that already. And yet I’m trying to spend more time with you. Did you question why?”
Because I need to finish your route and get on another one… Or so you thought, but that wasn’t the case anymore.
You wanted to understand Kalim, to let him feel love and happiness, and as for you… It was enough if he could be happy, even if you couldn’t bring yourself to fall in love with anyone in this school.
It was painful, but you couldn’t deny it anymore — all of them, Jade, Leona, and Kalim — they became dear and important people in your life, who changed it for the better.
You couldn’t remember when was the last time you smiled genuinely, transmigrating into horrors and thrillers, and here you were, smiling at Kalim and embracing him with a sincerity you never thought you possessed.
“You always wish for other people’s happiness, restraining yourself and not enjoying the time you spend to its fullest. But Kalim, at least when you’re with me, don’t think about anyone. Think about yourself and… Let your own heart decide.”
“My heart…” He whispered, lowering his gaze, and you welcomed him in a soft embrace, drawing him to your chest. “Alright. Yuu!”
A familiar bright light you’ve been growing to hate each time appeared once again, and you worriedly glanced at Kalim, who was smiling.
“I fell in love with you at first sight, Yuu. Thank you for not betraying my trust and teaching me important things. This is my gratitude.”
He pressed his lips to your forehead, and the last thing you saw was an image of his rosy cheeks and the most bright and genuine smile you’ve ever seen in your life.
“Thank you, too, Kalim.”
And the hell to the system transporting you to your room in Ramshackle again, labeling Kalim’s route as ‘COMPLETED’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Y’know, sometimes it scares me when you finish another route.”
Waking up next to Grim after completing a walkthrough became a tradition you already wished to be let burn in ashes.
“What do you mean?” You ask emotionlessly.
Now that you think about it, you didn’t want to even find out who Azul Ashengrotto was. You possessed no desire, letting your inner child arise, and wishing for everything to begone. You were at the point of no return, and it was already driving you crazy. You certainly weren’t the type to abandon your duties and responsibilities, you've been chosen as an employee of the month more than once, your colleagues often staring at you in surprise at how you managed to save your psyche unscathed after surviving the most horrid things people could witness.
And now you were closing your eyes, swallowing the urge to cry your eyes out and let you out of this circle of repeating routes. You didn’t want to love or be loved, you wanted to do your job. For what reason though? You never questioned, appreciating the chance to live endlessly after dying, wandering around the worlds with aeons passing through.
You considered people here your responsibility, too. Normally you were okay with leaving the characters of the finished stories behind, justice being jubilated, and you coming back to the office and letting bosses choose another story for you to enter.
“I mean,” Grim said, crawling to your stomach. “It’s kinda terrifying to see how we remember ‘em, meet ‘em and casually chat, but they don’t even know what happened.”
“You’re right…” He really was. “Though I think they have some feelings left after I… after completing.”
“Fugnya?”
“Leona seems to have my scent lingering on him, Jade also looks like he remembers something. I think Kalim wouldn’t be too much different.”
“Isn’t it even worse than if they didn't remember you at all?”
It was worse, and Grim was right, hitting you right to the core. It was a living nightmare, knowing they possessed a feeling of you experiencing something together, and you were still here, they could ask you, see you, feel you at some point.
But what will they do when you leave?
“... I don’t want to get closer to Ashengrotto.”
“He’s your next target, right?” Grim asked. “But you need to.”
“I know,” you inhaled soundly with a heaviness in your chest. “So I came up with another plan.”
“What kind of? By the way, I don’t know about you, but as for me, I’d hurry up and finish ‘em all already.”
“Just to remind you, they’re not objects I could simply manipulate for my own purposes.”
“And you’re not an object yourself to excruciate yourself like that.”
You swallowed an objection, knowing Grim was surprisingly right.
“As for the plan,” you shrugged the previous topic off. “You’ll see. I hope at least I will entertain Ashengrotto.”
Tumblr media
You definitely had no intention of getting closer to Azul. From the very beginning after reading his profile and seeing 90% of the difficulty level to the point you weren’t sure if you’re capable enough to finish it yourself.
You’ve created a scheme fitting Azul’s demeanor and attitude, however weren’t sure if it’s going to work, considering you actually wanted to make the system crash down and send you back to the office during the maintenance to never ever remembering everything again.
Feelings were hard to possess. It wasn’t love, but it was you receiving it. You were sure they all loved you differently — out of interest, of accepting, of admiration. You, on the other hand, couldn’t name your feelings accurately, but you knew that emotions were scary, unknown and addictingly enchanting.
Which is why you’ve entered Ashengrotto’s office with a feigned smile and a confidence you always seemed to demonstrate in other stories you’ve transmigrated into. Maybe a change of tactics would do?
“Ah, Yuu-san. Welcome to the Mostro Lounge.”
It, of course, was Jade who met you. You knew every corner of the Lounge after spending some time here with Leech, and now, receiving his unwaveringly polite smile, you answered with the same expression, greeting him cheerfully.
“Good afternoon, Leech.”
“How formal,” Jade noticed, but you tried to remain indifferent. “Alright, Yuu-san. How can I help you?”
“I’ve requested a meeting with Ashengrotto.”
And you had no intention of calling Azul by his name in his own route.
It was controversial. You needed to gain his love and win his trust, but at the same time you weren’t sure for 100%, wanting to escape and let this be as it is.
“Oh, indeed. Please follow me.”
His wide shoulders and arms that strongly held you when you almost fell off the cliff. The scent of the sea waves surrounding his figure and the way he glanced at you, thinking about something unbeknown to you. Argh, seriously, you wanted to turn back time and enjoy that night with a firework show once again.
“We’ve arrived,” he said. “Azul is informed you would come, so please come in.”
“Thank you.”
“My pleasure, Yuu-san. Be sure to come again for a cup of coffee.”
You clenched your teeth and nodded, knocking twice and entering after hearing ‘Come in’.
“Good afternoon, Ashengrotto.”
“Welcome, Yuu-san.”
The fragrance of sea waves was even stronger than the one Jade radiated, conjoining with something salty and sweet at the same time. You made your way to the sofa and placed yourself there after Azul nodded, the sea blue of his eyes making you forget all the words you’ve prepared for a moment.
“I heard you have a request to make, am I being correct?”
“Very much so,” you grinned at him.
“Well then, you seem quite determined. I believe you are already informed that everything comes with a price.”
“Sure do,” you nodded. “My request may seem unusual, but I hope you guarantee to grant anything I desire?”
“How persistent you are, Yuu-san,” Azul chuckled. “But worry not, here in Mostro Lounge I can fulfill every wish you make. For a certain fee, of course.”
“Marvelous,” you clapped your hands and stood up, stretching out your hand for a handshake, causing Azul to look at you, questioning your actions. “Well then, hear my wish.”
“I’m listening.”
“Please fall in love with me.”
Azul’s glasses slipped off the bridge of his nose, his eyes widened in shock, and he glanced at you, feeling his cheeks growing hot.
“W-what— Excuse my sudden startle, Yuu-san. Your request is just… quite an unusual one.”
“You said you guarantee everything.”
“I’m not taking my words back, I really do guarantee you that, but… why would you do that?”
“Let’s see…” You hummed theatrically, drawing an outstretched hand to your chin and imitating a frown. “First, you’re handsome. Totally my type.”
“W-what are you saying?!”
“I solemnly swear that I’m telling the truth and truth only!”
“Y-Yuu-san, wait for a moment, would you…”
“Second, I want to experience love. And since you’re the one fulfilling the wishes here, isn’t it quite obvious I came to you?”
“Yuu-san… I believe you’re mature enough to realize that love isn’t something that can be imitated so easily, right?”
“This is why I’m asking you, Ashengrotto,” you suddenly bent over, meeting his flushed cheeks and giggling.
Ah, this is bad. He was actually cute.
“I know you won’t take it easy. Please date me with all the seriousness you’ve got and fall in love with me genuinely.”
“Yuu-san…”
A heart-shaped icon above his head filled with a small amount of a pink liquid, and you bit your lip.
It was awful. You didn’t want him to fall in love with you, genuinely or not, you wanted to be free and him to be happy, not knowing you at all. Anything but destroying him after you leave.
“I promise to do my best too!” You smiled at him.
But you couldn’t promise to make him happy afterwards.
“Your offer is surely an interesting one,” he averted his gaze, not being able to meet yours, eager and all bubble-like, following his, flustered. “But what can you offer for the fulfilling?”
“Ah, that.”
The system’s databases were sure something else. The information provided by them made your work easier, even if you had to spend all the currency you possessed, now having nothing. You switched roles with Grim, him being the one who became a ‘family breadwinner’ for a time being.
“I’ll tell you my biggest secret no one in this school knows. No one in the entire dimension knows.”
“Huh?” Ashengrotto said. “What a flattering offer. Why should I trust you?”
“If you will fulfill my wish, you’ll be able to manipulate me, destroy me, make the whole world desire your knowledge and power, because I myself possess the knowledge every person would love to acquire.”
“You’re saying insanely nonsensical things, Yuu-san. But alright, prove it to me.”
“Great,” you clapped your hands. “I know there’s a photo of you and your classmates in the Atlantica Memorial Museum.”
Azul jolted at your statement, staring at your stoic expression.
“How did you…”
“Also,” you continued, getting closer to him and smiling slyly. “I know about the scheme you’ve planned to appropriate Ramshackle and all the things you’ve prepared for upcoming exams.”
“Yuu-san,” he frowned at you, standing up. “You’re walking on thin ice.”
“You wanted me to prove my powers, right? I did just so and I’m guaranteeing you’ll receive all of my power once you… fall in love with me.”
You lowered your gaze, and Azul wondered why would it even change so drastically, going from cheeky and sly to filled with sadness he couldn’t describe.
“... Alright,” he sighed, closing his eyes and fixing his glasses. “Let us sign a contract.”
“Oya thank you~” You giggled, grabbing a pen on the table, ready to sign. “I know feelings are hard to acquire, but please fall in love quickly, okay?~”
“We’ll see. Don’t forget you need to tell me everything once it’s over.”
“I won’t! He-he.”
You’re the one who’s going to forget.
Tumblr media
“Uhm, Yuu-san…”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t you find this position quite, uhm…”
“Hm?”
“No, nothing…”
You giggled with a soft exhale into the crook of Ashengrotto’s neck, thinking about how to escape the predicament you both happened to be trapped in.
You met him after his classes were over, waiting for him to come out from the auditorium, but only had he stepped out, he grabbed your hand and walked you away, accompanied by his classmates noises, hearing something among ‘Woah Azul’s dating someone???’ lines.
And then you realized he never intended to reveal your relationship status, and if the first two weeks went quite okay with you going on fake dates, no one managed to spot you. Or so Azul thought, but you knew Jade also figured out what kind of request you make, glancing over and smiling with an emotion you couldn’t understand.
So today he accidentally led you two into an extremely small staff room of the Mostro Lounge where mops were stored, escaping other workers’ stares. And it wouldn’t be a problem if Azul didn’t hear Floyd approaching you two.
So now you found yourself ‘trapped’ in here, your bodies being tangled, which seemed funny to you, while Azul was going crazy, his cheeks glowing crimson in a dim light radiating from one small lamp in the room.
“Ouch, Yuu-san, be careful.”
“The same goes to you!”
His hands on your back made you bite your lower lip when Azul tried fixing his position, but to no avail. You had no other choice but to be pressed to his chest, head empty of thoughts and common sense.
“Argh, Ashengrotto, you seriously!—”
“Shh!! Floyd’s coming.”
He managed to press a finger to your lips, and you remembered why you found otome games strange in the first place. All those silly situations like this were so stupid and unrealistic when you were recovering after experiencing literal hell in thrillers, but now? Now you were melting under his careful movements and focused eyes fixated on the gap in the door, fishing out Floyd.
You fell silent, averting your gaze, and felt Azul’s slow breath. Your legs went numb, and when you wanted to change your pose just slightly, you felt Azul’s grip on you tightening, and blushed.
“Uhm, Ashen—”
“Yuu— Ugh, can’t you just—”
“Aha~ Did I just hear Koebi-chan?~”
You tensed, clenching Azul’s necktie and panicking just slightly when you heard Floyd’s voice.
“Where are you two?~”
“Ashengrotto, I think we should—”
“Yuu-san, just shut up already!!”
“But I might fall just—”
He turned to you with the brightest color of red on his cheeks, grabbing your chin and drawing your face to his, shutting you up with a kiss.
You could have sworn you saw Jade’s intense stare for a mere second, and then also him talking to Floyd.
“Floyd, here you are. Azul told me we’re needed in the kitchen.”
“Eh? But I don’t wanna~”
“Let’s go.”
“But Ja~ade!”
You two parted with a soft sound of Azul’s nervous breath, and he shifted his gaze immediately after you stared at him blankly.
“A-Ashengrotto…”
“You’re hopeless, Yuu-san…”
“Sorry… O-oh…”
You noticed how pink liquid filled the heart to the half and inhaled sharply, grabbing Azul’s hand when he was going to open the door.
“W-what?”
“Uhm, nothing… sorry again.”
The kiss made you lose your mind for a moment or two. You needed Azul to fall in love with you as soon as possible before you fell for him yourself.
Tumblr media
“Ashengrotto.”
“Yes, Yuu-san?”
“Go take a rest. It’s painful to see you working so hard. I haven’t seen you sleeping for two days.”
Azul sighed, fixing his glasses, and continued writing something.
“Of course, you don’t see me sleeping, because I do that in Octavinelle.”
“I highly doubt that…”
You fell silent, sorting out the contracts he made, and stumbled upon a request similar to yours, gasping.
“What’s the matter?”
“Someone asked you to date them,” you frowned. “But you declined.”
“Of course I did.”
“But why? Didn’t you say you fulfill any wish?”
“Yuu-san.”
He stopped writing, sanding up and getting on one knee before you, causing you to blush a little.
“Because right at the moment I’m dating you… no, not just that,” he took your hand in his. “I’m falling in love with you, Yuu-san.”
You bit your lip, lowering your gaze and knitting brows together. It ached so excruciatingly right in your chest, you hated every moment of everything happening just as much you loved it. You…
“I have a question,” you said. “Have you not still fallen in love with me?”
“One more word, and I’ll start hating you instead, but…”
He placed his head on your knees, making you flustered.
“A-Ashengrotto?!”
“Yuu-san, first of all… There’s two things restraining me from loving you with all my heart.”
“Oh, I’m… All ears.”
“First,” he looked at you, pouting with a cute pinkish hue on his cheeks and ears. “Have you ever dated someone before?”
“O-oh?” You found yourself startled. “To be honest, yes, I have. Why?”
“Did you call them by their surname, too?”
“No,” you answered immediately.
“Then why do you call me by my last name?”
There was a reasoning behind that, but you couldn't even clearly judge yourself for your stupid decisions, so you remained silent, receiving his sigh as an answer.
“Fine. The second question possesses more importance anyway. Why don’t you allow yourself to love and be loved?”
You jolted, escaping his serious look, and not daring to give him an answer. You begged for the heart to fill up this instant, but Azul’s stoic gaze remained strict.
“The answer is related to the secret I’m going to reveal when you finally fall in love.”
“And what if I tell you I already did?”
You smiled bitterly at him, interweaving your fingers with his.
“You didn’t,” you laughed. “I know you didn’t. And you know it too.”
“Is it related to that knowledge of yours?”
“Correct,” you nodded. “I know how you feel.”
“It might be funny hearing from me, but Yuu-san. You can never know what one feels, even if in reality you had the magic helping you reveal people’s feelings all this time, or anything else — you can’t. Otherwise you wouldn’t say I don’t love you yet.”
You fell silent again. But the system couldn’t lie, the liquid of the heart was still on its half, so was he lying to you at this point? He wasn’t. You knew that too.
Will you believe the system or him, Azul Ashengrotto, his cold hands holding yours, cold too?
It was insane. It was an absolutely absurd, stupid mess you hated with all your heart. The support and consideration of your own feelings Azul demonstrated to you made you go crazy with a warmth blossoming in your chest.
“Azul…”
“Huh.”
He raised his head, meeting your surprised expression, being quite astonished himself, and smiled at you, clenching a piece of shirt in his fist.
“You really… What a controversial figure you are, Yuu.”
“Hey, I… Wait. No, no, Azul, wait!!”
“What’s with you?”
Bright light flowing around you made you burst into tears at once, throwing yourself into his embrace and crying hopelessly, him not realizing what was happening.
“I,” you sucked in the air, cupping his cheeks and smiling at him. “I came from another dimension and I’ve got two more people’s stories to finish. Y-you, you were my fourth story in this mess, and… Argh, no, please, give me one more minute, I’m begging!!”
“Yuu?!”
You felt how the light was tying up your limbs, and despite your miserable attempts at escaping, it ached. It was not your body aching, but your very heart.
“Please forget about me. Don’t carry my secret, the next time we meet pretend you never felt anything for me. Forget me and.. Thank you, Azul.”
“Yuu!” He cried out, grabbing your hand for a brief moment before you almost dissolved in the air. “Thank you. Thank you for showing me love and letting me fall for you…”
Opening your eyes in the room in Ramshackle you shared with Grim, you’ve decided that you would rather suffer yourself than letting others experience that pain with you.
Lilia Vanrouge and Idia Shroud are going to be different, you thought, seeing 100% difficulty level under Lilia’s icon in the system, trying to ignore the ‘COMPLETED’ line under Azul’s image, but sweet and salty scent of sea waves made you chuckle nervously and swallow your despair all at once.

Eden's Passing is a 16+ game made in Twine by me, Doc, and is my first attempt at making an interactive fiction game!
Genre: Primarily Fantasy and Comedy focused with a smidge of Mystery and Horror elements. Do tell me if a separate catagory fits, please!
Warnings: Trauma, Bodily Injury without feeling it, Body Horror in general (more will be added as time goes on, these are what I'm currently certain off)
Demo: In the works!
Tumblr media
Alone in a land you can't recall and stuck at the bottom of a seemingly endless ravine, the start of your journey isn't a pleasant one. Body slowly crumbling away, memory missing, and seemingly stuck with a stranger intent on calling you a name you can't remember, your attempts to leave seem fruitless until they finally offer a helping hand. Hopefully with no strings attached.
Set in the world of Nyr, you're just a lost soul trying to figure out who you are and what happened to you.
Features, added or intended:
☆ Fully customizable MC (name, hair, skin color, personality, etc.)
☆ Romantic or Platonic routes, Poly included.
☆ Long Crocodile. You'll see. ♡
☆ Learn more about the world and maybe save it, maybe launch a salamander at someone.
☆ Diverse cast of characters, ethnicities, religions, etc! (Please do tell me if anything's not accurate enough, it's fantasy, yes, but I am using some real-life ethnicities and such as basis!)
☆ A lot of lore. A lot. I made a map. I will do more than just a map. It's inevitable.
Tumblr media
Eden's Passing isn't romance focused but, those inclined towards it, does have multiple routes with it.
Zacharie, M, 36(RO)
A 4'11" man with spiky green hair and red tinted glasses. Adventurers clothing, torn at the edges and taped to his body on his limbs, cover most of his skin. What you can see of his skin, primarily his face, has stitches spanning the length and width. No one is allowed to touch them. Beyond that, he seems nice, even when he mutters insults at passing plants or argues with books. But his skittishness towards others is concerning, especially the glint of pure terror he sometimes shows. It's typical to see him hovering around Cassian, primarily either hiding behind him or riding his shoulders.
Solo OR Poly route with Cassian or Florian.
Cassian, M, 29 (RO)
At 6'6, he's the tallest of the group. Long black hair drapes down well past his hips, sometimes being used to hide his eyes from others. Old yet well cared for armor is his ordinary choice of clothing, no matter the situation. Quiet and melancholic, it's hard to catch him smiling at much of anything. Despite that, he's the first to jump into a fight to protect his friends. One of the few people to understand Zacharie, he keeps a firm eye on anyone that might pose a threat to the smaller man. A bit of an enabler, he will turn a blind eye to the more playful deeds his companions wish to take.
Solo OR Poly route with Zacharie.
Florian, Gender Selectable (M/F/NB), 25 (RO)
At 5'3", they're the second shortest of the group. Blond curly and short hair, styled like an odd pixie cut, clashes against the bright red coat they drap over themself. Two antennae stick out from their scalp, twitching at any stimulus. A butterfly bow, which sometimes flaps on its own when Florians distressed, keeps it from falling off. When they're not being pestered by Zacharie or Wynn, they're actually the most sensible of the group. A bit of a motherhen, they do their best to prevent the others from getting into trouble. It's a thankless job, and they aren't even getting paid for it.
Solo OR Poly routes with Wynn or Zacharie.
Wynn, Gender Selectable (M/F/NB), 23 (RO)
A 5'9" elf that's joined the group alongside Florian. Long, pointed, and pierced ears flick every so often, parting their short, light purple hair. Clad in a cape that trails in the air and an outfit that shows off a concerning amount of chest, they aren't the shyest with showing skin. Long pants that hide even their boots cover their legs, yet never get dirty as they drag across the ground. A bit of a flirt, they aren't the type to take much seriously. It's common to see them, Zacharie, and Twig up to no good, typically with Wynn at the lead. A natural born leader, one might be confused why they follow MC's lead, even they seem at odds with that fact.
Solo OR Poly route with Florian.
Twig, NB, 26 (RO)
Looming over at 6'4", they tend to forget just how tall they are. Long purple hair ends as their tail begins, the fluff at the end matching their hair. Thick and curly when short, it covers up their eyes from the view of others. 5 horns sprout up from their scalp, imitating a crown of sorts, and range in size from a few inches to just two. Clad in purple and blue robes that are breathable yet skin-tight, they've had Zacharie modify it to properly accommodate their tail. Out of the group, they remain the friendliest even in the face of adversity. It's... hard for others to tell whether they're simply naive or just too forgiving, but regardless of that, they remain the first to lend their hand when others need it. A bit of a goofball as well, it's easy to catch them trying to pick the funnest option first. Quick to trust and quicker to befriend, one might wish to spare them from the cruelty of the world.
Solo route
???, NB, ??? (RO?)
A figure that stands at 5'10, they're your savior from the pit you woke up in. Long hair, starting black and quickly fading to a bright red, flows from their scalp like tendrils. It flows as if hit by a breeze constantly, regardless of airflow. Clad in only a white robe tied shut at the waist by a sash, it's easy to notice the gaps in their skin. They never answer when it's brought up, leaving you wondering just what has saved you from the ravine. Quick to anger, you'd almost think they're unpredictable if not for the consistent causes and phrases. Regardless of who you are, they insist your name is Eden. Regardless of their affection towards you, they refuse to tell you who they are. They insist you'll figure it out.
Solo route.

In the Player’s World - Player x Yan!Madcom
So...I read most, if not ALL, of @saltymongoose‘s Yandere Madcom material and I just wanted to throw an idea out there.
How would Hank, Deimos, and Standford like the player’s world in comparison to their own and what I think the guys would like most about it. So I have a few short headcanons for it.
(For the sake of the setting, Player lives in a nice rural area and lives alone.)
-Headcanons under the cut-
       -- HANK --
When Hank arrived he was...pretty agitated and shocked by the sheer level of colors that assaulted his eyes when he gathered his bearings, but when he finally gets to meet his player, his mood instantly improves. The Player is obviously willing to accommodate their vessels, so while Hank is primarily indifferent, he couldn’t be happier. He gets to see you for real and hold you in his arms, what more could he want?
--
There wasn’t much that Hank found personal interest in, but there was one thing he did seem to like...very much, actually. One thing that was so rare in Nevada, but common here in his Players world.
Rain.
The first time Hank saw the rain falling from the sky, he stood out on the driveway. Allowing the water to drench his body and drip off of his form. It was...tranquil. Pleasing. Beautiful even. How it changed the world around him, darkened the colors of the world, and it always left a wonderful scent afterward. Hank really adored rainy days. You, not so much. Mostly because he would always come inside all muddy and soaked to the bone. Hank just uses it as an excuse for you to help dry him off.
--
The second best thing Hank seemed to like was the sheer variety of meat that your world had to offer. Being an avid hotdog enthusiast, Hank was more than thankful when you brought home a large selection of hotdogs and meats from your trip to the store in town. He didn’t know primarily how many meats you brought in, but Hank wouldn’t dare turn down an offering that you went out of your way to get.
He got to try so many things! Such as chicken, turkey, pork, fish, venison, duck, and much more. His favorites were ‘beef’ and ‘pork’. Since those meats just had a taste that was similar to the meat back in Nevada. He would still eat whatever you fixed or brought home for your vessels that night. For you, he wouldn’t dare be picky.
--
The last thing he enjoyed from your world was the abundant amount of entertainment. Your world had so many things to keep him occupied, since he couldn’t really go on missions or kill anyone (As per your request), so he indulged in your TV, gaming consoles, and various other electronics to pass the time.
He seemed to get entranced by some shows, namely violent ones. Such as the ‘Saw’ series or other gorefest flicks. He even got into the horror game aspects of entertainment, despite him not being very good at video games. Regardless, he enjoys watching horror movies with his player. Especially when you jump into his arms to hide your face from a scary monster that shows up on the screen with a loud noise.
That was his favorite part.
-
-
-- DEIMOS –
Deimos had a similar reaction to Hank when he first crossed over into his precious Player’s world. The colors of their world were so vivid that Deimos had to visibly squint to limit the amount of colors that were overstimulating his eyes. However, it eventually ebbs away and Deimos happily embraces his Player and gives them a firm hug. Deimos is happy to explore their abode while the Player gets their vessels settled in. Enjoying the finer things in life, like a couch that wasn’t lumpy or broken down. Man, he felt so comfortable here, that he probably would never want to leave.
Deimos was much more invested in technology than Hank or Sanford. He even acquired a hobby of hacking into various online websites to test their security and databases. He even found a few accounts on one of your personal computers of people that you had blocked over the years.
Deimos…was mischievous, to say the least. He was also a total snoop.
He manages to hack into your accounts and opens a few of those private conversations that never seem to get deleted and his blood slowly crawls up to a boil as he reads some of the messages that some of these worthless FILTH sent you. Many were spambots, but some weren’t. Namely some that were obviously still very active users.
He doesn't feel any regret when he pinches their IP addresses and the information of their credit and debit cards and buys you very nice electronic equipment. When questioned about the packages that show up on your doorstep, the only thing he does is shrug and play dumb.
Don’t worry. He’s made sure that those creeps online felt a LOT of financial pain.
Anyone that says those things to his dearest Player deserves to be in the poor house.
Deimos is also a rather active individual. He’s rather athletic and staying in one place for too long seems to bother him. So he takes up doing laps around his Player’s home. Scouting out the location and even taking in the surrounding nature that is nestled close to the home. One day, he even managed to get his Player to come out and walk with him on a brisk nature walk in the early morning. Those days are the best, merely because he usually gets the Player all to himself. It was selfish and immature in a way, but Deimos has always been that way.
If he can both scout out, exercise, and explore with his precious Player by his side out in the woods…completely alone, he probably wouldn’t want anything else in this life.
What could top being out all alone with the love of his life?
-
-
– SANFORD –
Sanford, just like Hank and Deimos, had the same reaction to entering the Player’s realm. His eyes could be seen squinting from behind his black shades. Even with their protection, the colors of your world were piercing and absolute. Still, he found it stunning and beautiful.
Even better than that, he finally got to meet his Player. He could only embrace you and let out an elated baritone chuckle as he relished in your eternal warmth that radiated from your very being. Finally, after so long he finally got to meet the one that had been helping his group out on missions.
And he had to say…you were much more stunning in person than in those photos.
Sanford was not much of an openly emotional guy, but he did admire some things. Guns, certain types of kills, Deimos, and various explosives. But one thing he never knew he could admire, nor did he ever think about, was the first thing he saw when he stepped outside onto the house’s porch with a warm cup of coffee that was brewed by his Player in his hand.
The sunrise.
Sanford watched in awe as the sky above turned into a bright and colorful painting as the sun rays of the early morning sunrise lit up the sky. He nearly dropped his mug in surprise when he saw the sight, but he managed to keep his composure. Watching the colorful world become even more beautiful with the passing hours made Sanford realize something. When was the last time he ever saw the sun in his realm? The sky turned blood red and it’s been like that for years…he has forgotten what the sun even felt like.
So he could only watch as the trees and nature around your house began to glow and take on vivid shades as your sun slowly cloaks the world around him in warmth.
Funny. It reminded him of his Player in a way. But of course, there was no way that the sun would outcompete you in his eyes. But, maybe that’s why most of the grunts tend to covet your warmth.
Maybe you simply make them all nostalgic for what they used to have.
And well…he wasn’t intending on losing it again.
Sanford also decided to pick up a new hobby while in your world to pass the time. Which was helping you to cook some of the exotic meats that your world happily provided for you.
Despite cooking for his team most of the time, supplies were hard to come by in his dimension, so sometimes they would have repeated meals over and over again. This time was different, however. You would go out on some days after going to work and come home with a plethora of goodies for him to experiment with.
Fish, poultry, pork, beef, and other varieties were on the menu and Sanford was rather entertained with the prospect of eating so many different foods. With your ever-comforting guiding hand, you taught him how to prepare most of the meat and certain ways to cook veggies.
Sanford’s cooking skill greatly improved, as stated by both Deimos and an approving nod from Hank, but your approval stood out the most of all. You would encourage Sanford to keep sharpening his skills in the culinary field.
Sanford never felt so much pride swell up in his chest before.
For you, he would do anything. He was certain of that.
Sanford also found an outdoor activity he enjoyed and it wasn’t just so he could keep his more impulsive partner under his careful watch. Sanford had taken up the activity of fishing in the lake nearby your abode.
The first time he explored the lake, he was rather surprised to find other creatures inhabiting the water. Living beings that weren’t humanoid in shape. This was his first encounter with what you called a “fish”. Which was also edible and could be hunted and eaten. So, Sanford decided to watch a couple of “fishing” videos and decided to take a stab at it.
With his large hook, he would go out to the pier and watch the waters for movement. His gaze was sharp and wary, similar to how he would watch for danger back in Nevada. Then at the first sign of large movement, and a quick thrust of his hook and chain, the water surface was broken and a large fish was skewered on the end of his hook.
Sanford took a minute to process before he allowed a large smile to show on his face as he carried his prize back to the house.
Once he showed his catch to his Player, he was given a flurry of encouragement and congratulations. To which Sanford soaked up like a dry sponge. You even took the fish from him and told him that you would be cooking it up for dinner that night. To which a lightbulb went off over Sanford's head.
Then, he started performing rather unique types of chores around the house. Cutting wood, helping with outdoor upkeep, fixing any problems with equipment, and fishing on some nights when money was tight.
If there was one thing Sanford was going to prove above his rivals, was that he could provide for his Player.
To prove that he wasn’t just a vessel, but that he could also be a worthy husband of yours someday.

On Thanksgiving, Gareth's douchebag cousins called him a loser and said he'd die a virgin. So he panicked and made up a fake girlfriend that sounds a looot like Hellfire Mom. Now he has to ask her to come with him to his family's Christmas party. Will she be The Best Fake Girlfriend Ever, or will she be The BEST Fake Girlfriend Ever?
Oh she’s the BEST fake girlfriend
(and i think i went a little overboard with this one but it was so fun to write!)
Tumblr media
Of course you agreed to help Gareth prove his cousins wrong after he told you what they said about him
You discussed everything for a few weeks beforehand and decided on some rules before you went with to his families thanksgiving
He could put his arm around you, hold your hand, kisses on the cheek, use pet names, but he was NOT allowed to actually kiss you
He’s got one pass and it HAS to be when his cousins are about to see it
And since his parents don’t love their extended family that much they’re completely on board with it
You even tell his little sisters your plan and they had a hard time hiding their giggles the whole time
But you’re already like a big sister to them so they were happy to have you come along with them
Once you got there, you put on your game face and his entire family LOVED you
His cousins were shocked that not only did Gareth have a girlfriend, but she was nice, not to mention they had a difficult time keeping their eyes off of you because how could Gareth possibly get a 10/10 girlfriend when they couldn’t???
You helped his aunts make dinner, you ran around outside with his little sisters and cousins, you tried your best to talk football with the uncles, and when his grandma saw that you brought along a plate of cookies with you for everyone so you didn’t show up empty handed she absolutely approved of you
And Gareth was the sweetest fake boyfriend you could’ve asked for
He introduced you to everyone, pulled out chairs and opened doors for you, and during dinner he set up your plate just so you didn’t have to lift a finger
When they were going around the table sharing what they were thankful for, you really put on a show
You said you were so thankful for Gareth being the best boyfriend you could’ve asked for, and you were thankful he brought you along to meet his wonderful family and you couldn’t wait to come along for more holidays, and of course it was all finished with giving him a kiss on the cheek
Once dinner was finished and the family started to get into the fun part of the night, one of his aunts said that his cousins were off somewhere in the house and if you wanted you could have some alone time instead of hanging around all the little kids and that was the perfect opportunity to have his cousins catch you kissing him
You both quickly ran upstairs trying to keep your giggles in as you looked for an empty room to plan out how his cousins would catch you kissing him
You shut the door to the spare room you found upstairs and decided it would be best for Gareth to go find them, have a short conversation with them, and wait for you to show up behind him saying you were looking all over for him and kiss him before leading him off with you
It was weird to think about having to kiss one of your best friends but honestly if it meant that you helped him show his cousins up you didn’t care
Plus it might be an interesting experience to get to kiss your best friend
Gareth went off to find his cousins upstairs and one he found them he stood in the doorway and had a bit of small talk with them
Of course they asked how he was and all that other normal small talk bullshit but then they asked him what was really on their minds: how could he have possibly gotten an absolute smoke show girlfriend with how he was?
He was in a band that barely got a crowd, played dungeons and dragons and watched horror movies in his free time, and all his friends were freaks just like him, so how was he possibly able to get someone like you?
His answer?
‘To be honest i’m not sure why she likes me either. I think she said something about liking me just being myself, but who knows?’
You suddenly appeared behind him and reached for his hand with a sweet smile on your face and a light blush on your cheeks saying you’ve been looking all over for him and that you really wanted to go have dessert with the rest of the family and then…
Your hand reached up to hold his cheek, you brought him close, braced yourself, and kissed him
It was soft and sweet, just like you had imagined it would be, but it did feel kind of weird after you parted
Almost like kissing your brother
But still, you saw the looks on his cousins faces afterwards and the two of you smiled to each other as you led him back downstairs
Before you reached the bottom step you gripped his hand in yours and pulled him in close to you
‘No one, and i mean no one, will know that we had to kiss each other.’
He nodded quickly, almost a bit frightened at your sudden anger but he understood exactly what you were saying and knew that it was just something that would be kept between the two of you that would never be spoken of again
The rest of the night was spent with his family in the kitchen, and of course his aunts and grandma had to pull out the photo albums and show you all the pictures of baby Gareth and all the goofy stories that went along with them
They made sure you knew that they now considered you a part of the family
As you left you made sure to hug everyone goodbye and even giving a little wave to his cousins before you were given a plate of dessert to take home and sent on your way
His parents spent the whole car ride telling you everything that the family was saying about you two
How you made such an adorable a couple and everyone was shocked that Gareth was the first person to bring a girlfriend with to a family holiday and how much they loved having you there!
They even wanted you to come back for Christmas
Once you were back home you told Gareth you’d be happy to fill in as his fake girlfriend until he got a real one
As much as you loved his family and they loved you, it wasn’t something you could do forever
But as long as you were being sent home with a plate of dessert every time you didn’t mind doing it for a bit

Lav's Updated Ref! (Cuphead oc)
Tumblr media
Here it is!! Lav finally has an updated and cleaner ref with new outfit options
Name: Lav Ander Age: 19 Height: 5'7" Pronouns: He/They Sexuality: Asexual Biromantic Likes: horror movies, video games, alone time Dislikes: crowded/loud spaces, talking to strangers, butterflies/bugs
Lav used to live on another island away from the main Inkwell Isles, but eventually came to live there after an incident that left him unable to see out of his right eye, causing the crack on his face and the chip in his handle. Lav now lives in Inkwell city with his roommate Sammy Citrus, leaving everyone, even his best friend Sprite, behind. Lav is very socially awkward, but once you get to know him he's really sweet and friendly. He has severe anxiety due to the trauma he went through in his past. He used to smoke to cope with this, but has tried to stop when he started a new life in Inkwell City. He learned to play the piano at a young age, but doesn't like playing in front of people due to stage fright. Overall Lav is a loveable, clumsy, and shy dork who gets flustered easily. He is just trying to start a new life where he can be happy and make new friends without living in constant anxiety and fear.
Lav is of course open for asks! His story is in progress and I will be making comics/short stories about him once I finish up the current asks I have.

As they struggle to get their bearings, a sinister clown appears out of the blue and informs the Go-Getters that they'll be playing a "Game of Fate"—pitting their lives against one another in a desperate struggle for survival!
Bewildered and confused, prospects look bleak for Reycho and the gang, but when all hope seems lost, out of nowhere, strange powers start to awaken in the daring Go-Getters.

You run to the front door since it’s storming pretty bad.
“Hello!? Your pizza's here!" You announce. No one answers. There's an eerie silence.
You are getting soaked from the rain, so you hesitantly step inside the door and look around. The front door suddenly closes behind you.
You just wanted to finish this last delivery and head home for the night. Now you must figure out how to get out of this stupid creepy house.
Freely roam the house and try to figure out what is going on. Three dolls and a strange girl named Emily will also start roaming the house as the hours toll by. Stay away from them, but if you do end up in a room with one, figure out how to stay alive.
This may be your last pizza delivery."

My Own, Distant Home (Completed), A Fears to Fathom: Ironbark Lookout fanfiction
Chapter 2 (END), ao3 link
Jack Nelson x Connor Hawkins Words: 16.6k Genre: Horror, humor, smut
"Jack thinks him a good guy, Connor, despite what others probably thought. He wasn’t particularly friendly, a bit of a short fuse, but he took his job seriously, and didn’t forget to wish Jack well, even among his rush for a solution. Some people would call that dedication. Jack decided, as he tied his boot laces, that it was endearing."
Or
A romantic, creepy, canon-compliant retelling of the game's narrative where Jack and Connor are more fleshed out characters, and not immune to the emotional threads that form when your only friend is a voice on the radio—until he isn't.
Rated Explicit for sexual content, strong language, horror elements, frightening imagery and descriptions of violence.
Cross-posted to ao3, same username, here.
Cheers to rarepairs, and to all the people who had a crush on Connor during the game: I have heard you. If you like Firewatch, or Do You Copy, check out fears to fathom, you could play the entire series in a day but I liked Ironbark the best. Even if you haven't played the game, I'm sure this can be read alone for people who like horror and making love in a thunderstorm 💙
Chapter 1 (Below)
It was only a transfer.
Not usually a big deal, this other park needed to fill a lookout position urgently, and Jack was probably the best suited for it. Not only because his coworkers spoke highly of him, but because he had the RV, and relocating was as easy as driving down the road. When you’re this free, no wife, no friends, no obligations, 2 hours is nothing to go to the next job.
Yeah, he thought as his eyes wandered off the road to the side mirror, the endless blacktop behind him, the empty road in front of him. No obligations. Free.
So why did driving up to the trail-head make his stomach ache?
He blamed it on his last meal in civilization for the time being: a perfectly greasy, buttery cheeseburger, no doubt made by a certified home-cooked chef with hairy arms. He wasn’t used to eating out, eating so much, and in hindsight, the large coke was a bit of an Icarus move.
Just a bit of indigestion, nothing to worry about.
Not at all related to his walk to the gas station next door for cigarettes that was interrupted by a creepy local. The one leaning against his car and mouth-harassing his own hamburger, gossiping cryptically about big foot and missing kids like he was a Stephen King minor character. Real “you wanna watch out for that road” stuff.
The same missing kids on the poster across from the gate office. Gone without a trace, with no more search parties willing to keep looking after they lost some of their own people to what witnesses called “strange whistling in the dark”. Anyone saner, smarter, might have gotten back in their RV and not looked back. But Jack loved nature, and liked his job. Until he heard this strange whistling for himself, he had bills to pay and a guy named Billy to see for check-in.
The light to the guard shack was on, the door unlocked as he turns the handle. Worn out and road-fatigued, his brain hardly lends him the advice he should have probably called out to see if anyone was inside. His eagerness earns him a twin-barrel to the face, and a rightfully earned yell from both of them.
“You scared the piss out of me!” The ranger scolded him, and Jack fired back—
“Do you shove a gun in the face of everyone who sneaks up on you? What if I was a camper?”
“You can’t be too careful out here. There’s bobcats, bears and—wait, you say you’re not a camper? What are you doing barging in here anyway?”
“I’m Jack Nelson… Your new hire? Tower 11?”
“Well,” the mustached man regarded him with suspicion beneath his black cowboy hat. “Tower 11 is empty, but I didn’t hear about any new hire. Give me a second.”
“Oh,” Jack refrains from saying anything nasty, regardless of his fatigue, and puts up a patient, half smile. “Sure. Take all the time you need.”
He wandered out of the shack, back to the billboard with the missing poster, only half-reading the posted copy of the trail map he already owned when Billy came back out.
“You’ve been vetted. Sorry about all that, I don’t check my email as often as I should. You must be tired from driving, I’ll just take a copy of your ID and get the gate open so you can start the hike up to the tower.”
Billy was gone for only a minute before he came back, enough time for Jack to get his duffel and lock the RV. He handed back his ID, and pushed open one of the arms of the gate.
“… Hey.” He called before Jack could get passed him.
“Tower 12 is your closest neighbor, call him if you need anything. And don’t—I mean, do NOT go out further than maybe a 1/4 mile north of your tower on foot. Got it?”
“Uh, sure?” Jack gapes at him, unprepared. “Why?”
“It’s dangerous out that way. You’ve got bears, bobcats, all sorts of stuff.”
“Right… Thanks again, Billy. Goodnight.” He waved, eager to make some distance between him and this newest creepy local, and start wearing down the trail to his tower.
Did everyone in this town take etiquette lessons from a paperback horror novels? They were at least in the same book club, which actually wouldn’t be weird for such a small, quiet place.
The walk to the tower is easy, if a little cold by the time he crosses the creek. Tower 11 sits up against a nearby radio spire, lit up red and guiding him to the foot of his home for the foreseeable future. He knows to gas up the generator and crank it before he starts up the long flights of stairs to the top, and the tower cabin, small but not cramped, is a welcome sight.
The sheets on the bed are clean, free of holes and smelling of cheap detergent (ocean breeze something, he guessed), and the good burn of a wood fire seems to be baked into the panel walls and secondhand furniture. All his needed tools are haphazardly scattered but identifiable at a glance, and the fridge, beginning to kick on, is filled with old, freezer burned food.
Not rotted, there’s no unpleasant smell besides stale, and the room is otherwise well-kept, but he can’t help feel that the last occupant left in a hurry. Beside the bed lay a pair of abandoned wool slippers, and those go in the trash too.
All he needs to do is lay out his blanket and pillow to call himself moved in, and getting a fire going is even faster. He’s tying off the trash, waiting for the microwave to finish heating up a cup of coffee, when his radio, boxy and cumbersome on the little desk, clicks to life.
Static greets him before another male voice, deeper than his own.
‘I saw the lights go on. You copy, new guy?’
“Yeah, hey. I’m Jack.” He squeezes the receiver on and off as he sits in the old, steel chair in front of the desk, wiping a bit of sweat from his brow with the back of his arm.
‘Connor, Tower 12. Your new neighbor, I guess.’
A beat of silence, and then a click. “Billy mentioned you, just not by name. Nice to meet you.”
He hears Connor hum into the receiver, distantly wondering if it was a sound of irritation at him or something Jack couldn’t see. ‘Well, you got a fire started, that’s good. It’s good to see Tower 11 alive again.’
With a pause, his voice was friendly again, like whatever he was worried about suddenly resolved itself. ‘Anyway, don’t let me keep you. Oh, and don’t forget to submit your report before you go to bed.’
Jack suppresses his yawn with a wince—half headache, half ready for bed, and clicks the receiver. “Don’t worry, I won’t.”
‘Get some rest, new guy, don’t let the bed bugs bite. Over and out.’
“Over and out.”
The radio dims with no open connection, and Jack forgets his coffee in the microwave when he can’t manage to avoid dozing off in the chair.
A few hours pass, midnight rolls upon the park and an unintelligible static rouses him from his sleep. He wants to investigate, his instincts whispering to him that something was wrong, something lurking in the forest beyond his tower, but an ache in his lumbar and the pressure in his bladder leaves no room for anything except the urgency to get comfortable quick. He stretches until his back gives a satisfying crack, and with a quick leak off the railing of the tower, he falls into bed without another thought.
NIGHT 2
On nights like this, Jack can imagine being a lookout forever, nipped by the last throes of winter on a chilly wind yet cradled safely between the warmth bleeding out of his tower and the hot coffee in his hands. Perched up high, nearly brushing against the clouds, the sunset seems brighter than down on the trail, all melted pinks and oranges that don’t begin to betray how in less than an hour the forest will be all but black.
The static of his radio breaks the silence.
‘New guy, this is Connor from Tower 12. Do you copy?’
He drops his empty mug among the dirty dishes from dinner when Connor speaks again. ‘Tower 11, do you copy?’
Tower 11, I copy. What’s up, Connor?” Jack answers before he eases himself into the desk chair.
‘Son of a bitch! Nobody bothers to get a camping permit anymore. Do you have eyes on the smoke north of your position? Looks like it’s off the Lacey Trail.’
“Give me a second, I’ll check.”
He grabs his binoculars, is almost out the door when Connor’s opening the line again. ‘I need you to confirm.’
“You can hang on, it won’t kill you,” says Jack to himself while peering off the railing. Exactly as Connor described it, north of his tower, and near enough to likely be off the Lacey trail—a closed area—he spies the telltale white smoke of a campfire.
‘Do you see that smoke up north?’, comes the radio again and Jack answers with what he hopes passes for patience.
“I see it.”
‘Shit. People like that don’t clean up after themselves either, and fire risks are high this season. Do you mind checking it out?’
“I’ll head up there, and report back anything I find.” He rises to get his coat and boots.
‘Stay safe out there, new guy. Don’t forget to carry your bear spray. Over and out.’
Jack thinks him a good guy, Connor, despite what others probably thought. He wasn’t particularly friendly, a bit of a short fuse, but he took his job seriously, and didn’t forget to wish Jack well, even among his rush for a solution. Some people would call that dedication. Jack decided, as he tied his boot laces, that it was endearing.
Lacey Trail was several miles away on foot, no matter how close the smoke had seemed in the binoculars, and he pocketed both his bear mace and his flashlight before leaving the tower.
~*~
Unseasonably cold air nips through his fleece jacket, fingers already red around the knuckles as he fumbles to zip himself up. The beam of the flashlight bobs about over the dark trail, “3.2 miles” the optimistic sign had declared back near his tower. Only, the longer he walked, surrounded only by the icy wind biting on his ears and a deafening chorus of insects, the more it felt like “ETA unknown”.
A campfire lights the path around a bend in the trail, a match flame at the end of the path.
Whatever he wanted to call out, “hello”, or “get lost”, was cut off by the unmistakable sound of a man’s scream.
He makes no attempt to call back, taking off in a sprint towards the glowing campsite. The campfire in the center of a couple picnic tables and a tent illuminates the entire clearing between the trees, fresh wood popping, what must have been tossed in only minutes ago. But the campsite is empty. The tent’s open flap reveals a rumpled sleeping bag, the tables are crowded with an oil lantern, a battery-powered radio, and heaps of fresh food—but completely empty.
“Hello? Where are you?” He shouts into the dark with no answer. On the side of the clearing closest to the creek, a closed gate and red sign read ‘No camping allowed’.
“Are you hurt? Where—oh!” Jack coughs out a startled grunt, nearly tripping into the dirt over what he discovers is an abandoned flashlight.
His blood chills, colder than the unseasonable weather. Beyond the cautionary signs, where the darkness swallows the unkempt trail, drifts up the sound of a whistle. A human whistle, devoid of any recognizable melody.
It’s all he can do to stagger back, swipe an empty dinner pot from the picnic table and douse the fire with cold water from the creek. He tosses an unseeing glance over his shoulder, and is hoofing it out of the campsite and up the trail before the campfire has even stopped sizzling.
The cold air stings his lungs as he runs most of the trail back, hot blood thrumming into his ears and all but drowning out the insects. Were he less panicked, he would have heard over the sound of his own breathing that the insects had actually stopped, startled to silence by the looming shape in the treeline.
~*~
The glow of his tower beckons him home, and he scrambles his faculties to remember to grab firewood before climbing the steps, as well as relieve himself in the portable toilet beside the stairs. With what he witnessed, too vivid to not want to trust his own eyes but too strange to possibly be real, he wasn’t sure he would have the nerve to walk back down before dawn.
His radio flashes with an open channel, presumably Tower 12, and he sits heavy down in the metal chair. “Tower 12, do you copy?”
Beats of silence remind him his blood has yet to warm up.
‘Loud and clear, new guy. Sorry for delay, I was just cooking up some hot—’ Connor pauses, too much like Jack did when he thought he was being boring.
‘Nevermind that. What did you find out there?’
“The campsite was abandoned. Not a soul around,” Jack said, pushing down his nausea and the phantom sound of an eerie whistle.
‘Are you—’ A loud clang in the receiver, like a fork dropped in a bowl. ‘Kidding me? Son of a bitch. People like them are part of the problem, and on top of everything they run off.’
Jack fingers the sleeve on his jacket, realizing suddenly he had been too worked up to shrug off his fleece or his boots when he came inside. “I put out the fire, but there’s nothing else we can do tonight.”
‘No no, I get it… Thanks for checking it out, Jack. Tomorrow morning, I’ll report it to the authorities and they can take care of it.’
The words are out of Jack’s mouth before he can scold himself for being frightened in front of someone else. “I heard a scream. Honestly, I feel kind of bad for not sticking around to look harder.”
‘A scream? Probably just a red fox, they sound almost like a screaming lady when the rest of the forest is buzzing.’
Jack clamps down on a protest that it was a man’s scream, clearly no fox, then Connor is speaking again.
‘This is the third time this month. Ever since those kid’s went missing, there’s all sorts of rumors about the area being haunted, and we just can’t keep people out. Well, maybe I could, but not from this tower. I’ve got a job to do.’
The whistle is back in his mind, as vivid as Connor’s voice over the radio but, again, Jack keeps that to himself.
‘Well.’ Connor breaks him from his thoughts. ‘I’ll let you get to dinner, or whatever it is you do after you log off. Goodnight. Over and out.’
“Goodnight, Connor.”
2:27AM
He can’t explain what wakes him.
Nothing immediately seems wrong but he can’t begin to trust his senses, not with the greasy film that smudged his eyes no matter how hard he blinked, the heaviness of his limbs, and a sluggish mind at the helm, ripped from the deepest parts of his sleep cycle.
But even blind, dumb, and lame—he knew he was being watched.
Weak hands scrubbed at his face, trying to clear the sleep, until the room came into some kind of focus. Moonlight drifted in the one open panel behind his computer desk, casting the upright shadow of a—
His heart all but stopped. He squinted, unbelieving, blinking more at the peculiar silhouette painted across his front door. Unclear if it was man or beast, the sloped shoulders suggested humanoid but the shape of the head, wide with points that could be horns or ears in the dark made him unable to do anything more than stare.
Struck by a sudden wave of courage, he leapt up from the bed, throwing the blanket aside without certainty his legs would support him, and dashed to the light switch.
The shadow vanished with the incandescent bulb over head, banished by the light but lending no evidence as to whether it was some paranormal, hungry entity vulnerable to light, or something more secular afraid to be caught. Jack didn’t know which was worse, and standing alone in the center of his floor, he could finally hear how fast his heart was racing.
Whether by insanity or curiosity, though they hardly seemed different from where he stood, one of his shaking hands grabbed his bear mace while the other went for the door. The abrupt quietness of the night lent him courage where it shouldn’t, and upon venturing outside he was horrified to realize he was truly, tragically alone.
Or he was now.
Against the railing, and almost disturbed by the bear mace that clattered to the ground, was a skull.
Goat, from what limited knowledge he had, flanked by a few, worn, lit candles, and smeared across the ivory forehead with a red symbol he refused to get closer to identify either it’s shape or composition. He resigned to shove the door shut, slamming the lock’s hammer in place with no regard for the bear mace he abandoned.
“Tower 12, come in.” He tries the radio receiver, met with static. “Tower 12, can you hear me?”
More static and another beat of silence makes his stomach ache. “Connor, I need you to wake up.”
He’s never been so happy to hear the quiet click of another radio opening the line.
‘Do you have any idea what time it is?’
“This is an emergency.”
‘Are you okay? What’s happened?’ Connor immediately sounds more awake, like he’s sat up straight.
“Someone’s been on my tower, I woke to—I heard footsteps, it woke me up.”
‘Are you kidding me?’ Less composed now, angry but not nearly as when he vented about the campers earlier that evening. Though it was easily explained by the remnants of sleep clinging to him.
“I think they’re gone now.”
‘Did you see what they looked like?’
Jack’s mind raced back to the shadow, the beastly silhouette, and the footsteps that seemed to vanish when they passed by his door.
“N-No, but they left a skull on my doorstep. An animal skull, goat or—something, with candles, what looked like blood. Sick shit, Connor, I don’t—know—”
‘Take a deep breath, new guy. Let’s think about this rationally. You went and investigated a fire tonight, right?’
“… Yeah.”
‘So we know there’s unregistered campers in the area who don’t care about rules or regulations, probably bratty kids or college students. Suppose they wanted to get back at the fire watcher who doused their evening, it wouldn’t be that far of a walk. It’s just kids, Jack, don’t let it bother you.’
“You—” He let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “You’re right.”
‘Did you happen to get a photo of the thing?’
“I didn’t think about it.”
‘No shame in that. It’s all right to be riled up, but it’s not okay to panic. Lock your door, try to get some rest. Take a photo in the morning, and we can file a report with the authorities.’
But no sooner was Jack beginning to calm down, the hairs on the back of his neck began to rise, his stomach tightening with the idea that Connor was only coming to the conclusion of what limited information he had.
“Connor?”
Sleepier now, the other man’s voice came back a bothered rumble. ‘Yeah, Jack?’
“What if it’s related to the disappearances? At the campsite tonight, sure, it was empty but I heard… I heard whistling beyond the barriers for the closed trails. It’s a heck of a coincidence, don’t you think?”
For all his neighbor’s frustration at being woken so suddenly, there was no doubt that he was fully awake now, deliberately staying quiet on the other end of the line as Jack waited for any kind of answer.
‘New guy… You don’t believe all those rumors, do you?’
Behind his ribs, Jack’s heart is back to hammering. “Nah. No, I mean. You’re right, it’s gotta be kids.”
Connor didn’t seem convinced, even for a disembodied voice. ‘I’ll tell you what. I’ll send someone to check on you tomorrow. For now, try to get some sleep, new guy. There’s nothing we can do in the dark.’
“Yeah… Thanks. Of course.” He rakes his hand through his hair like if it might knock his anxiety loose. “Goodnight, Connor.”
‘Goodnight, Jack.’
~*~
The skull was gone when he awoke the next morning. Nothing ever came of the report, and for a short time, the forest was quiet.
He’s gotten quite used to this little routine: submit his report, have dinner, say goodnight to Connor, bed.
Check the weather, put dinner in the oven, submit his report while talking to Connor, bed.
So they continued for days, falling into the comfort of predictability and looking forward to their goodnight radio checks.
‘Honestly, I envy you a little bit,’ said Connor one night while Jack posted himself up beside the radio, blanket around his shoulders and holding a hot mug of coffee. Probably not the best idea before lights out, but the warmth in his core more than made up for what his little wood stove lacked in power.
“Envy me? Why?” Jack sipped quietly.
‘You’ve got the RV, you can literally just pick up and go wherever you want. Hell, you did it once already when you relocated out here.’
“It’s… lonelier than I like to admit.”
Down in his cup, Jack could see the undissolved granules of his coffee lying along the bottom. With a quick swish, they’re gone and Connor speaks again.
‘While Tower 11 was empty, I forgot how nice it was to have someone to talk to.’
“You must really be desperate if you’re enjoying my company that much.” Jack found himself smiling, a bittersweet thing.
‘I should be the one saying that to you. Every day I call you to vent about these fucking campers, leaving their trash and shit. And you answer for me every time.’
He chuckled, unaware Connor was also smiling on the other line. “It’s kind of my job.”
‘Ouch.’ They laughed together this time. ‘You’re not supposed to agree with me.’
“Then maybe you should be nicer to yourself.”
‘You first, Jack.’
A comfortable silence falls over both sides of the radio transmission, twin smiles and the warmth of more than quick and dirty coffee between them.
‘You still with me? Sounds like you’re about to go any minute now.’ Connor said, soft and slow. If Jack kept his eyes closed, he could have imagined he said those words beside his ear.
“I think that’s all I’ve got, Connor.” He scrubbed at his eyes. “You get some rest too. Goodnight.”
‘Night, Jack.’
BETWEEN 2 AND 3 AM
A hand over Jack’s mouth bolts him awake, his entire body tensing as he grabs at the arm that holds him.
“Shh! Shh, Jack. It’s me… Its Connor.” He hears a familiar voice somewhere above him, and the blonde man comes into focus as Jack blinks away the last of the sleep. Moonlight shines through the open paneling, illuminating the side of his handsome, worried face, the width of his broad shoulders in a thin t-shirt.
“There’s something outside.” He looks briefly to the window. “Scoot over, Jack.”
He hardly has time to obey, let alone time for rational thoughts like What’s outside? and How is us both getting under the blanket supposed to help? before the other man is climbing into the single bed and pressing against him from the shoulder down.
“What are you doing?” Jack half demands, half pleads.
“Shh.” Connor hushes him, and he wants to relent—almost does—under such dark eyes, close enough to see they were brown in the dim light. “We have to be quiet, or they’ll hear us.”
“Who will hear us? Connor? What’s happ—mmf! M-mm,” Jack moans, startled, when their lips meet, smooth and wet like Connor had licked them before he leaned in.
His belly twinges, toes curling from only a kiss, and he might have been embarrassed if it weren’t for the hot outline of an erection digging into his hip. Connor’s tongue tastes of instant coffee, no doubt he himself tastes like cigarettes, but Connor doesn’t seem bothered. Not with how hard he is and the firm grip of his palm on Jack’s ribs through his old shirt, the way his thumb flicks at his nipple with little regard for how it makes him shake.
Teeth rake his bottom lip when their kiss turns deeper, hungry, panting hot into each other’s mouths as they work together to yank their sleep pants down to their thighs. A whimper jumps up between them as Connor’s hand clasps around them both, and Jack realizes it must have been him because when his thumb slips in the pre leaking from his tip—he makes it again.
The hand retreats long enough for Connor to lick his palm, but Jack knows he’s getting wet enough for the both them, so long as those capable hands keep pulling needy noises from his lips, pulling on his cock like that. Just like that, just how he likes.
“They’re gonna hear you, baby, you gotta be—quiet,” Connor pants against his wet lips. Jack wants to kiss him back, needs it, but he can do little more than leave fervid little moans against his tongue, joined by the spit-slick sound of Connor’s hand, warm and tight around them.
“I’m—s-sorry, Connor,” Jack fusses when the tightness in his belly finds the next gear, and for all his warnings, Connor is doing nothing to help him make less noise when he leans down to suckle at the side of his neck.
“Come on, baby, you’re almost there. Say it again,” he whispers warmly into his shirt collar. The rumble of him speaks to control, all whiskey and smoke, but Jack can feel how the rhythm of his forearm waivers, how the leg he has threaded under Jack’s begins to shake.
“C-Connor, get something to—Connor—”
Jack’s eyes throw themselves open on a gasp when he wakes, startled from the dream by the warm wetness seeping into the front of his underwear. He tries to sit up as best he can but his stomach quivers, heart thumping, as wave after wave of pleasant ache widens the stain on his sleep pants and steals his breath.
“For fucks sake,” he sighs, letting his body flop back to the bed when the feeling in his hands returns.
Awareness follows right behind his mess, and he flips the blanket away to hopefully spare himself the further embarrassment of taking the damned thing to the laundromat. But, even that was better than doing a spot wash in the sink, and having to tell Connor it was an Italian food incident when he sees it draped over the railing to dry.
First his waking hours, now his dreams. Connor filled his mind with thoughts of normalcy, the lingering ache of loneliness, and the insane idea of enjoying another person’s company. Such a luxury eluded him most days, a comfort he hardly believed could be found in these ominous woods.
Between distracting daydreams, some salacious, some sweet, and his immersion in his work, he almost forgot to be afraid.
~*~
The days that follow are easy but hardly quiet, not with Jack’s brain torn and oscillating between the paranoia of the encroaching forest—and his growing crush on his neighbor. His heart struggled under the stress of peering over his shoulder in the dark woods at every broken twig, just to be riled again by his nightly check-in. He began to sympathize with the rabbit his sister had when they were kids, perfectly still for all their fervent affection, until their veterinarian explained it’s early health problems were stress-related: poor creature was unable to distinguish their childish, heavy-handed petting from the musings of a predator biding it’s time to feast.
People had already disappeared. How long did he have until he was eaten too? Swallowed by the woods until all that remained were the tenets of skeptics and a ghostly whistle.
He busied himself with maintaining the tower, hammering down loose boards and checking the horizon repeatedly until the sun was long gone and the eerie quiet had settled it’s blanket across the forest.
“24.4 knots…” He murmured to fill the silence, as a flare lights up the north. Before he can go for his binoculars, the radio flicks on with an unfamiliar man’s voice.
‘Hello? Is anyone there?’
“This is Tower 11.”
‘Oh! Oh, thank god.’ The voice, a young man, shaking and unsure, comes over the line. ‘I’m lost and—I’m really starting to freak out.’
“Take a deep breath,” said Jack, his free hand opening the trail map on his computer. “Can you tell me where you are?”
‘I don’t even know where to start. I went out exploring and lost track of time. Everything looks different at night. The uh, the last trail marker I saw was by a stream, but I couldn’t read it from where I was. I’m walking west because I remember walking east to get here but… I’m definitely lost.’
“What equipment do you have?”
The hiker ignored his question, excited to finally be somewhere familiar. ‘Oh, man. I found the fork in the trail. But, I don’t remember if I’m supposed to go right or left to get back to the trail-head.’
“I have a map, let me take a look.”
‘Thank you.’ He says, but only lets Jack look for a few seconds before trying again. ‘Hello? Are you still there?’
“One more second, it’s all right.”
‘Oh. Oh, I see you!’
Jack looks to the radio, shocked to silence while phantoms of a predator’s fingers slip up the back of his neck, loosing shivers in his warm tower.
“What? What do you see?”
‘I hear you. You’re whistling to me. I’m right here!’ The hiker shouts, surely waving his hands above his head to welcome the unknown danger, and Jack’s thumb nearly cracks the receiver.
“Hey, HEY! That’s not me, I’m—”
‘What do you mean? You’re starting to freak me out—’ The transmission ends early, no crackling, no screams. Only silence, save for Jack’s breathing, his pounding heart.
Fuck.
He shoves the desk chair away, jumping up to grab his flashlight, and was two hastened footsteps from the door when a knock startles him almost to shout. Whatever possessed him to wrench open the door without a second thought, he hoped a well-aimed flashlight is enough to take them down.
“The hell are you doing in there? I’ve been out here knocking for awhile.”
His heart jerks, relieved, having never thought Billy would be the cause. “S-sorry. Was helping a lost hiker.”
“At this hour? Lord have mercy,” he drawled, his perpetually rumpled mustache shifting across his troubled frown. “Anyway—here’s your supplies. Just the essentials.”
“Thanks.” Jack turned away to set the box on the counter, when Billy spoke again. “I hear you been a little stressed lately. Everything all right?”
He never considered himself a liar, but Jack liked to think he knew how to pretend well enough to avoid suspicion about most things. Especially in regards to his own well-being. The smile that slips over his face is practiced, appropriately tired for the time of night. “It’s taken me a little longer to adjust to the new environment than I thought, but I’m getting there. Thanks for asking.”
Address the question logically, formulate a response from a half-truth. Acknowledge their concern. Easy.
Billy is so willing to not push the subject, it’s almost too easy. “That’s the spirit. Well, I won’t keep you. Get some sleep, Jack. Don’t forget to submit your report.”
He leaves as fast as he can without falling down the stairs, and Jack is happy to clap the door shut behind him. In the back of his mind, routine called to him, rubbing on his shoulders and offering him a cigarette after an exhausting day.
“Firewood, dinner, Connor in bed—THEN bed. Firewood, dinner, talk to Connor, respectfully, professionally, finish my report. Then bed.” He waved the flashlight back and forth anxiously as he wandered down the stairs, single-handedly determined to not have anything scary happen for the rest of the night.
If only he hadn’t gone for firewood.
The pile in the shack isn’t dwindling as fast as he anticipated with the weather warming up, and he makes a mental note to skip chopping more wood tomorrow. He balances the wood under one arm, flashlight tottering in the other as he leaves the shack—straight into another man.
“AH—damn! You nearly gave me a heart attack,” he pants when the bald man in clean coveralls doesn’t immediately move to disembowel him.
“No need to be afraid, son… I’m a worker, here for some routine maintenance on the radio tower over there.” The man’s flat, almost drowsy cadence is anything but comforting, too close to Jack’s liking of what he imagined a wax figure or mannequin to sound like, speaking slowly and quietly to not arouse suspicion of their sentience.
“Thought I would say hi to the new guy everyone’s been talking about.”
“… What’s your name?” Jack said as his hands flexed on the firewood, itching to run.
“Names can be deceiving. Call me Silas.”
“Do you always work so late?”
“Every Sunday.” A strange thing to admit, rather than lie about being up on the mountain so late for something so menial. “Just trying to keep the communication lines open. We must ensure the right messages meet the right people, wouldn’t you agree?”
“Right,” Jack said without hesitation, though he doubted he and Silas were talking with the same subject in mind.
“Absolutely. You watch for fires, but some fires are meant to burn. And no amount of prevention can stop them.”
His fingernails ache from holding the firewood throughout their conversation, and he can feel his heart beginning to thump against his ribs. “… It’s late. I should be going back. Goodnight, Silas.”
“Nature has plans,” he called after him, the intonation of his voice carrying without having to shout: an orator’s calm, suffocating inflection. “Ones even you can’t control. It will be cleansed.”
Upstairs, Jack shoved the firewood into the stove, both to relieve his stinging arms and to burn away the creeping dread that prickles at the back of his skull. Something is wrong with these woods, wrong with the people, from the supervisor who seems to have had his tongue stapled to the roof of his mouth, to the radio repairmen who spouted doctrine with the affect of a puppeteered corpse.
When had the woods he found such comfort in become so grim, promising only death to those who didn’t know when to run?
‘I can see the smoke coming from your tower. Don’t tell me you’re not in there?’ Connor’s voice, unbothered and probably craving his evening small talk, laid a calm over the quickly warming cabin.
‘Jack? Come in, new guy.’
“Here, Connor.” He lowered himself into the metal chair, pulling his jacket over chilled fingers.
‘Finally. Where you been?’ If Jack concentrated hard enough, perhaps he could sponge his blissful ignorance, or at least pretend to take refuge in the wrap of his arms. He couldn’t remember the last time he hugged anyone besides his sister, and most recently was still months before he left for the middle of nowhere.
“I went downstairs for some firewood and ran into Silas.”
‘Who?’ He says, half-muffled like he’s sat at the radio with his dinner.
“The guy who maintains the radio tower. Creepy as hell, spoke in riddles—I don’t think I actually saw him blink.”
The silence over the channel lasts long enough Jack reaches to flip the receiver on and off, hands skimming the metal casing for any sign the call had been disconnected, then Connor scoffs with some one-sided realization.
‘Is this about the other night? Tryin’ to yank my chain?’
Jack has to bite down on his lip next to bleeding to not fire back “I am not nearly funny enough to yank anyone’s chain, and if I was going to pull on anything of yours it would be your—”
‘That radio tower’s been out of service for ages now.’
His heart drops into his stomach. When he doesn’t answer, Connor continues to explain as if Jack wasn’t reeling, two seconds from puking into the receiver. ‘It was closed down right after I got here because a lightning strike fried it’s systems. Mitch said he would get it fixed next time there was room in the budget, but—well, you know how that’s going.’
“Then who did I just talk to?!” Jack shouts, too frightened to be embarrassed for his volume, and only hoping it didn’t hurt Connor’s ears or break their speaker.
‘Easy, Jack,’ replies Connor, too cool for the pounding in his ears. ‘Hey, you’re okay. Listen to me. This isn’t our first run-in with pranksters, is it? They got you again, but that’s all they can do. They’re not gonna hurt you.’
“He called me Jack.”
‘He knew your name? Do you think he’s been listening?’
“I don’t know, maybe?” He ran his hands through his hair, hoping to dispel some of the compounding anxiety of an imminent death.
‘Either way, we need to report this. Next time you see him, get a photo or his ID and anything else we can use to identify him. We’ll figure it out, Jack. Don’t worry.’
“Thanks, Connor.” His hands scrub down his face, he can not keep up this pace of being frightened and then having to convince himself nothing’s wrong just to keep from running into the woods and not stopping until he sees the road.
‘Call me if you have a nightmare, all right? I’ll put you back to sleep.’
“You asshole.” He can’t help the chuckle that sputters from his suddenly warm chest, hearing Connor’s smile through his cheeky tone.
‘Got you to laugh, didn’t I?’
Jack’s face is hot, he knows he’s blushing hard, and he summons the strength to not say anything too embarrassing (like “come over”) with a shuddering sigh. “Goodnight, Connor. Thank you… for everything.”
‘So sentimental. I like that. Night, Jack.’
The line clicks closed before Jack can chase him through the line, demanding to know what he meant, why his voice had to drop into the register that made his stomach flutter before disappearing from the face of his very, very small world. His suffering sigh rattles from his chest.
“I need to go to sleep.”
2 DAYS LATER
If it rains any more, his tower might flood.
All day, all evening, Jack had spent the majority of the day watching the shower soak the forest, ignoring the chores he tended to avoid anyway, and drinking far too much instant coffee because it was his only alternative to water. Although, he did get the spray duster out from under the counter, just to say he did.
“Maybe I’ll ask Billy to put some teabags in my next resupply,” he said, pouring out the last of his cup into the sink and picking up his cigarettes to take with him outside.
The forest below should look half-drowned after drinking all day, but it only sways elegantly in the gentle wind, not strong enough to push rainwater over the railing where it might disturb his smoke break. Tower 12 stands in the distance over the treeline, the soft, golden lights in the window suggesting Connor was taking a lazy day too.
Was he reading a well-loved, dog-eared novel? Cooking something warm and spicy? Maybe he fell asleep, belly full of warm food and blanket curled around his legs as the novel slips forgotten to the floor. Down into a deep sleep, the kind of rest what leaves him too warm when he wakes, hair rumpled and shirt risen over his middle to bear birthmarks or a secret tattoo.
“Jack, come back to bed.”
“Ah,” he grunted, sudden static from the radio ripping him out of his daydream. He presses out his cigarette, kicking over the ash tray as he hurries to his feet.
“This is Tower 11.” Silently, he congratulated himself for sounding perfectly professional and not guilty in the slightest.
‘This—does it—damn.’ Connor’s voice over the radio is smothered with screeching electronic snow, laced with intermittent words of increasing urgency.
‘Can’t—need h—Jack—can you hear—’
He whipped around to the window. The lights of Tower 12 hadn’t dimmed, but the persistent static and ominous, disconnected message chilled his blood. He gave no further thought to logical explanations, common sense could hike up the mountain with him if it really cared that much—and ran from the tower without changing his jacket to something waterproof and only his flashlight to protect them.
Above him, the rain pounds down harder, deafening as it pushed through the treeline to soak him, splattering over his trousers with every puddle he stomped across to get to Tower 12 as soon as he was physically capable, or sooner, even if it wounded him.
He reached the bottom of the tower not long after nightfall, expecting to be met with some sign of a struggle, but found nothing. Apart from the generator flashing a yellow warning light and the stack of firewood down nearly to nothing, there was no ripped grass, no gashes in the mud to suggest there had been anything unsavory in the woods that night. He tore up the metal steps anyway, two at a time, not convinced and not bothering to knock before he threw open the door—
And found Connor at the sink, half-dressed, the last dregs of shaving cream on his cheeks in thin stripes, steaming rag in hand.
He just stared at him.
Jack stared back.
“Can I help you?” Connor broke the silence, wiping his face clean and grabbing the henley draped over the back of his chair.
“You’re alive.”
“Jack?” He gaped at him, blonde head popping from his shirt’s neck hole to piece together the voice he knew with the grainy, black and white photo he had glimpsed on the staff directory website.
“Yeah that’s… that’s me.” Jack’s voice muddled down to a tiny murmur as the embarrassment threatened to melt him into two humiliated puddles inside his boots.
He really ran here, never-mind the several miles, ran here in the rain, dragging in water and mud like he was going to self-promote from fire lookout to ghost-buster with just a flashlight and some home-grown, grass-fed nerve. Death would have been kinder, he thought.
“God, you’re soaked. Here.” The towel that flies across the room to slap gently against his face smells like their cheap, provided laundry soap, with a thin vein of cologne, sharp and clean, a smell Jack suspected was baked into most everything fabric Connor owned.
“Sorry about your floor.”
“If I actually cared, I’d make you clean it,” Connor smirked at him, rummaging through his open duffel on the counter to hand over a sweater, boxers, and a pair of sweatpants of the same brand as the ones he wore himself. “Put these on, I’ll hang up your clothes by the stove.”
Jack changed obediently, careful not to spread his mess any further than his little corner by the door, and sheepishly offered his wet clothes for Connor to thread over hangers.
“You’re a mess.”
He thought to protest, finding he could only continue to rub the towel over his hair, a little like a nervous tick. “Feels like it.”
“So. You gonna tell me why you tore across the mountainside and threw yourself into my lap half-drowned?” Connor said as he leaned against the counter, arms—nice arms—focus Jack—crossed over his chest. But, for all his posture and words that spoke to some degree of scolding, he could only find warmth in his gaze, patient enough to hear every word of his reply with grace and an open mind.
“The radio…”
“The radio?” Connor went to flip it on, demonstrate how it crackled and sputtered before coming online, green light ready.
“My generator started giving me crap a couple hours ago, I thought the power surge might have killed it so I tried to call you. You didn’t answer, I thought you just couldn’t hear me.”
The embarrassment releases him in an instant, he’s suddenly back where he had been an hour ago, disoriented and tearing down the trail. “It was terrifying, you sounded like—you weren’t making sense from the words that did get through. I didn’t know if you were being murdered up here and calling for help.”
He scoffs, then turns away from him, towards the window. “Is this about the missing campers again? Because I’m not willing to entertain all of your theories right now, all right—”
“I was worried, Connor. Scared the shit out of me.” His words left him in a rush, hanging between them, the only sound among the hum of the fridge against the wall.
“… You came all the way up here—in a storm—because you were worried?”
Jack couldn’t bear to look up to see the extent of the confusion he heard in his voice. “It’s—just a shower, really. It’ll stop soon and I’ll get out of your way,” he mumbled and rubbed at the back of his neck.
“Weatherman says it’s gonna get bad. You should stay.”
The timber of his voice, softer, almost nervous, had Jack raising his head to meet his eyes.
“I’d like you to stay.” He offered, and the nervousness turned out to be more uncertainty, testing a boundary he wasn’t sure would welcome him on the other side. “I’ll feed you. There’s soup, a couple beers left in my stash. What do you say?”
Jack’s hands tightened in the damp towel, suddenly he struggled to breathe.
“I’d like that.”

Welcome to Proved Loveless in Death
An Interactive Tumblr Poll game where you choose who's your favorite... and who dies <3
Basic Idea: You are the poor victim of the Court of Fey, targeted with a spell called 'Rose Tint' that makes you able to see choices and decide on what path fate will take in the name of madness and love.
I'll post snippets of backstory and character designs and then write chapters of the story with a poll in the end of updates every once in a while, having votes for how things will proceed. Scuffles and ultimatums, life and death. You've made quite a lot of boys devoted to you throughout your life. Now, years later, see how far the fay's corruption and lovesickness twists their actions through this game.
TW for horror with gore, maiming, psychological abuse, gaslighting, and dub/noncon.
You are trapped having to see the sweet memories and friendships you shared turn into red splatters of blood. The versions of them you remembered, marred forever by how sick and twisted they became as soon as your friends realized this was a competition. You are the prize.
Whoever comes out of it will be your fated lover, and own your heart whole-y (along with getting some compensation from the Fey for the good show of course).
Choose wisely.
Short Profiles and Concept Art of the Friends You've Gathered Throughout the Years:
Tumblr media
Cassius (5-10): Violent, protective, entitled.
You were next door neighbors as kids. He played pranks on you at first but would get mad at others and hit them if they tried to do the same. Although you thought he hated you because of how mean he was sometimes, he would not stop hanging around you instead of going home.
After you heard yelling and shattering from his home, you'd let him slip inside your house in secret too. You really became his security blanket, and he eased up on the teasing. But he'd be mean again if you ever tried partnering with anyone other than him.
When you had to move, he bullied you into promising you'd marry him. You eventually relented as you saw him cry for the first time. He's taken this oath way too much to heart and has been doing his best to become someone reliable and strong for you.
Even years later, he can't stay interested in anyone because of how strongly he clings to the fantasy of you. That his goal has only ever been to become someone you could be proud of. He feels like it's a betrayal to let you go.
So he starts chasing after your trail.
Tumblr media
Ami (10-13): Girly, manipulative, spoiled.
You came to his school as he was getting retribution for bullying his classmates. He had been snide, unsympathetic, and cruel to them, toying with everyone's emotions. Finally, his classmates snapped, and he found out how powerless he could be against a mod. He started getting bullied himself. He had been so sure the adults would help, but there was no response from his teachers, and his parents never noticed. He felt alone for the first time in his life.
He was at his lowest, accepting his fate, and you saved him without having context to the full story. You became his his knight in shining armor; the person that proved to him again that he had value. He clung to you.
With new resolve, he rebuilt himself. He regained his confidence, and began living two-facedly, as he promised himself you'd never know about his mean side. He kept finding ways to shut anyone who tried talking to you about his past... then, because of his overzealousness, he threatened ANYONE who even tried befriending you too.
He couldn't trust them with you. You were *his*friend; his person to play with, spoil and adore... Up until you had to move far away. Again.
He was distraught and tried so hard to convince you to run away, to hide in his house. He'd take care of you! Of course, you couldn't. It was just a dumb, kiddish fantasy. But even now, years later, as his life went on without you, he keeps revisiting the possibility whenever he misses you.
He's made an enemy out of everyone. No one else has treated him as kindly and as sincerely as you. No one is meant for him like you are. He can't let you go.
He just can't.
Tumblr media
Ragnar (13-16): Depressed, asocial, cold.
His mom passed away and his dad moved them to another state. He fell into a deep depression and started having bad, bad thoughts. You were both new to school.
You clung to him because of this; after relying so much on only Ami previously, you were so unsure of how to make friends again that you were terrified. Ragnar was initially disgusted being smothered with attention, he just wanted to be left alone and not care about anything. It was sad, but your classmates started seeing you both in negative ways, and it furthered a divide between you both and them. All the more reason for him him to feel overwhelmed by you. You and your manner of being probing, kind, funny, and so... persistent. He thought he hated you.
But then you got sick and had to miss a few days of school. Getting his wish, being alone all school day and at home, Ragnar realized it was the opposite. He'd unfortunately gotten attached to you.
And he was looking forward to seeing you again.
When you came back, to your shock, he slowly started clinging back. e kept making up reasons as to why in his head. You came to him first anyways, so this much attention was fine, right? And... making sure you weren't be allowed to get close to anyone else was also okay... because it's not like anyone would be able to understand you the way he does.
He began monopolizing you. Everyone in the school was such a fake, you needed someone loyal to look out for you. That could only be him. He was always by your side, ready to give you anything and to keep everyone away. Slipping up on his undiscovered true emotions and telling you at random sometimes, poetic stuff about how much you mean to him and how you two were made to make each other happy.
He was always sweet to you.
When you told him you had to move again, he took it really hard, as if you were the one deciding to leave him. You'd made him want to live again and just took that hope away. He became cold and detached the following weeks, it made you both depressed up until your last day when he was finally to the point of breaking down. He ran to your house, knocked, and hugged you tightly, crying. He didn't say anything as he handed you an envelope and ran away. It said 'Don’t open until we meet again.' You've been obedient.
He knows it's stupid but... he still clings to you as the light in his life that he needs to get back. His life is yours, and yours is his.
Tumblr media
Varrik (16-18): Top student, smart, diligent.
You met him in the later years of highschool as all the pressure put on him being on top was beginning to make him break his charming persona. After moving so much, you'd become tired of trying to keep friendships and were settling into being a loner. But, you caught him having an anxiety attack in an empty classroom and helped calm him down.
Because you were new, Varrik let his guard down and felt like he could open up for the first time in years. You didn’t have a preconceived idea of him. You didn't care. It was freeing. After he was done, you tried giving him reassurance, but he lied about being busy and fled the room. Embarassment caught up to him, but when nothing came of his vent session, he started to relax again.
And the prospect of talking to you started to excite him. Ever since, he'd keep an eye on you, and sometimes, when he caught you alone afterschool, he'd linger just a bit around you, hoping you'd find some reason to talk to him. You fell right into your curiosity everytime and would ask him how he felt. Getting to talk to you in private like that would make his day.
It meant the world to him to be able to have someone understand him. In return, he realized your grades could be better and decided for himself to help you by hosting a lot of study (date) sessions. Also in private.
He knew how much of a loner you were, and that talking to him during school could open you up to other friendships... but he liked things as they were already. You were always available and a little expectant about you activities with him. It was cute.
He tried keeping your meetings a secret for thsoe years, but eventually, someone noticed. To combat this, he readily convinced them that he was set up by teachers to be your tutor in private because you had poor behavior that had to be monitored. He made a convincing story about the real reason you never socialized and always kept to yourself. No one doubted someone as reputable and kind as him.
He got his wish. No one else talked to you, and honestly, you couldn't be bothered to realize what had gone on. Now he never had to worry... but just to be safe, he started moving these (dates) sessions to other places. Like cafes, libraries, the park, his home... You were so close outside of school... even hanging out during the breaks. Giving gifts in secret. He was so happy... he wanted to stay that way.
Come senior year, he had a plan. He'd push you to go to the same, elite college as him. He really did his best to monopolize your time and energy into it with extra tutoring, volunteering, and scholarship hunting. He was picturing a future that HAD include you.
Finally, letters were sent and… You weren't accepted.
He was.
It broke his heart more than it did yours. He-He had to go, he couldn't just… not. His parents, his efforts, it'd all have been in vain otherwise. But he hated leaving you behind and felt wrecked with guilt. You did your best to console him. He pretended it worked.
As you waited with him in the airport, you thought about how what a weird twist of fate it was to be the one seeing their friend off now. You hugged him and reassured him you could meet up again sometime. But with how intense his program would be, you both know that was likely impossible. The last call for his flight rang and he had to let you go. You handed him one last gift before you left him. He opened it when he sat in his seat. It was a little keychain with a small photo of the both of you. He couldn't take his eye off it the whole ride.
He still has it, and stares at it when he needs to feel something again.
Tumblr media
Ludovic (18-21): Domestic, dependable, protective.
Roomies assigned when both your actual roommates dipped at the last second.
Ludovic started off terrible. He was in a shitty friend group that he'd followed into college just to party. He thought you were a stick in the mud and would intentionally get on your nerves a lot. He was the worst during the first semester, and you planned to ditch him as soon as housing gave you the clear.
But, after staying late studying for semester finals, as you were going back to your dorm on your car, you saw Vic being dragged away by two people. As you get closer it looked shadier and shadier.
You stopped the car and told them you were his roommate. You tried to appear friendly as you told them you'd take him back to your shared dorm. They refused, until you recognized one of them (someone Vic had brought over before) and you called her name. That makes her nervous and their bravado broke. They loaded him in the passenger seat and walked away.
He was definitely, unusually out of it.
He was a mess as you drove back home. He puked on your car. And while going up the elevator. And in your room. You had to help him change and he finally he realized who you are. He started crying about how he knew he was a shitty person, and you didn't deserve putting up with him. He was really starting to blabber about how he knew his life was spiraling with his clique, but that he felt helpless. He had no motivation to change.
It made you pause your initial opinions of him and reevaluate him. You were up all night checking on him and thinking about it as he's passed out. You couldn't help doze off after a while... and woke up feeling like you were watched. You turned around and saw him looking at you. Really looking at you. He didn't say anything, and turned around in his bed. You thought he was embarrassed and let him be, going back to your slumber.
Things changed a lot after that. He dropped his friend group, he became a bit more serious about his degree, he cleaned up after himself and... he valued you a lot more.
He had an epiphany after going through that; that he had to make better life choices. He needed more dependable people around him. Like you. He really wanted to make it up to you. A year later, he has gotten very involved in your life.
Once a week, he'd treat you to something you like, walk you to your classes when possible, and inadvertently memorize your schedule, friends, preferences, quirks.
He'd go above and beyond for you, even taking up extra chores and learning to cook things you liked in the communal kitchen. You felt guilty, like you weren't worth all this attention, but he always told you honestly that he just wanted to work on himself. And part of that was by becoming a good roommate to you. That quelled most arguments.
He's still a bit of an asshole sometimes; he likes to tease you a lot because of your inexperience to a lot of things, but he's never mean. You can finally say you're fond of him, and even look up to him for helping you whenever you were in trouble.
Meanwhile, as time went on and he had more introspection, Vic comes to terms with knowing that.. he loves you. But he's afraid. He can't trust himself anymore. He can't trust his judgment on what's right and wrong. On if he's really a good person or just pretending to be so that he can stay close to you. Against better judgement, his thoughts and urges slip into fantasies that aren't... healthy. It's a vicious cycle that feeds into his guilt, wanting to make up for it by doing something special for you, you give him a compliment that gets to his head and makes him think of more. He can't help it.
Another year, and another. Everything is great. Stuff gets lost and he makes fun of you for it. You binge watch shows and always try to eat together. Other friends you make start to drift away, but he remains your constant.
He'd follow you anywhere... it gets so domestic, anyone would mistake you for a couple already! But unfortunately, that last line is never crossed...
It's time for you to graduate. Because of certain mistakes and a lack of concentration in his classes, he isn't able to join your year. This is it. He'd been spiraling over through all of your final semester. You were leaving him.
He helps you pack, hiding the dread he feels, like his life was slipping away. He had to say something, to confess... Or... did he? Could you do long distance? Would you consider waiting for an idiot like him, still stuck in school?
He didn't want to burden you... after everything was loaded into your car, you both wavered. He joked that this wouldn't be the last of him. Next time you need a roomie, he'll zip right over. You laughed and told him you'd take him in a heartbeat.
In a heartbeat.
You drive off and he's alone, trying to tell himself he can always sneak back into your life. He's gonna graduate. He'll go after you. And even if you're in a relationship, married, or just uninterested, he'll find a way to convince you you two were perfect, and he'd claim you.
He just has to wait.
Tumblr media
Xander (21-24): Socially awkward, weakwilled, obsessive.
A tall, gawky, nerdy guy who joined the company you work at the same time as you.
Both of you were given the same assignments so you could help each other out. Xander was super flighty, nervous and stuttered a lot when you first met him, but with you were persistent. You'd take over the reigns when he couldn't, you gently tried making him feel comfortable when he was anxious, and you encouraged him when he did things right. You were a good, sweet coworker, and the man was starstruck, feeling blessed to even be in your presence when he was such a.. screw up.
The reason for Xander's awkwardness was attributed in part, because of his fearful and overbearing parents. He was home-schooled his whole life, kept to the house and taught schooling the 'proper' way. He was told meeting kids his age would only dumb him down, and yet, he felt like he was drowning under his parent's expectations anyways. He was never as good as they wanted.
Finally, he was allowed, at least, to escape to college. He was so nervous and excited. He tried so hard, too hard, to socialize... and found out very quickly that people did not like his ticks. The people in his class thought he was annoying, and he could never get the courage to talk to anyone outside of what was mandatory. Making friends was... too hard. He was hopeless without the tools to express himself well. In the end, he couldn't make any genuine connections up until he graduated.
His dreams of being happy were crushed. He was kicked from his parent's home and felt dread, believing work would be the same kind of hell in a different form.
How lucky he was, that you were there.
You, patient, kind, funny and cool. You, who seek him out even when you're not paired up, who wants to hang out with him for lunch, and doesn't shame him when he makes a social mistake. You're the first person he can call a friend. He's ecstatic and way too overeager... subtly, without realizing at first, he's even building a shrine to you in his head.
Which slowly became into an... actual shrine.
Obsessive. He can't help himself. Overanalyzing the things you talk about, looking for ways to feel closer to you, getting into all the things you're into so you can talk about it at work, stealing your lunch when no one is around and offering his own when you cant find it, soon even coincidentally moving somewhere closer and suggesting carpooling to save on gas. It's all pretty obvious if you weren't so trustful. It's not like anyone cares, no one bats an eye. Xander can get away with it all... for now. The long looks, the extra shifts, random (offerings) gifts in your desk and his constant, looming presence.
You're perfect. There is no one else in Xander's world but you.

Rereading Pandora Hearts Is A Wild Ride - Volume 1 Review
The reason why my favorite manga is Pandora Hearts is because of how well-crafted the story is. The story has cleverly crafted details sprinkled out throughout the slow beginning that begin to connect once you reach the second half of the story. Once you reach the second half, your mind just short circuits because of the crazy plot twists. I am forever traumatized by the second half of the book. Rereading Pandora Hearts is going to be an absolute wild ride because I already know what happens and all the details that come with each key dialogue. I am going to do my best to not write a 5000 word essay on why I love this manga so much and I’m doing my absolute best to avoid major spoilers. I’ll just give you hints and key points to focus on while reading this amazing ride.
Tumblr media
What is Pandora Hearts about? It’s about a fifteen-year-old boy named Oz Vessalius who is celebrating his coming-of-age ceremony that goes down in the dumps when it gets crashed by hooded figures that want to send him to a fictional version of Hell called Abyss because of his sin, which is his very existence. In order to escape Abyss, he meets a girl named Alice who is also a Chain, creatures that dwell in the Abyss. They form a contract and Oz is taken back to the surface where he meets both familiar and unfamiliar faces. Now, Oz is on a journey to help Alice find her lost memories and for an answer on why his sin is his existence.
The first volume is the slow start of this soon-to-be roller coaster ride. The first chapter is the introduction of Oz, his sister Ada, his servant and best friend Gilbert and his uncle Oscar. It’s just character introduction and a bit of world building. Listening to Lacie while read the middle of the first chapter is a wonderful experience. I totally recommend listening to the Pandora Hearts OST while reading the manga.
The manga is a mix of horror and fantasy—which is Mochizuki’s forte. If you thought the monsters from The Case Study of Vanitas are scary, well, I think Pandora Hearts’ monsters are scarier. There are haunted dolls in the first chapter! I don’t like haunted dolls. However, from the first chapter alone, the foreshadowing of Oz’s sin is already hinted at. He meets an illusion of Alice who says that he has come back and that he has always came to her room. If you know what Oz’s sin is…well, the that dialogue is already triggering war flashbacks for me.
What I liked about chapter one is essentially the character and world building. The setting is unique. Also, if you did not know, the entire manga has elements of Alice in Wonderland sprinkled into it. I love Alice in Wonderland, so this manga is right up my alley. I think my excitement for what’s to come is stemmed from the fact that I am rereading this.
The second chapter has the crazy action sequences from Black Rabbit/Alice’s formal appearance to Oz being sent down to the Abyss. The introduction of Break and Sharon are a game changer as they are important characters. We also see what a coming of age ceremony is like and how people younger than fifteen cannot attend and what it does. Too bad it got cut short. The hooded figures are a terrifying bunch as they possess Gilbert in order to sabotage the ceremony.
This chapter brings about a tension that the first chapter did not have. What saddens me the most was that no one was at Oz’s side during the events. Gilbert was mainly possessed and protected an enemy from Oz’s sword. Oscar was MIA. All Oz had was the Black Rabbit defending him and it still wasn’t enough. I do love Oz’s character as someone who does fight back despite being a young noble boy. Oz is such a good protagonist. I love him so much. I also hated the scene where Gilbert got slashed by Oz to defend the enemy. Man, Gilbert did not deserve that at all. My sweet baby boy… Also, keep an eye on the hooded figures. They’re important later on. Another key point to keep an eye on is Alice’s appearance. She appears before Oz and his adversaries saying that he belongs to her. Keep an eye on her possessive dialogue.
The third chapter is basically Oz’s time in the Abyss. It’s not a pleasant place to be in. Creepy Chains are everywhere. Oz meets Alice who isn’t a pleasant person to be with, but she’s still earnest. Oz gets lied to by a Chain by pretending to be Sharon. It’s like Hell in a way. In order to escape the Abyss and to protect Alice, he forms a contract with her.
My favorite aspect of the third chapter is the comedic placement. A serious scene like Oz meeting Alice and calling her the ‘girl who molested me’ ended him getting kicked in the face by her comedically. The comedic timing reminds me a lot of Fullmetal Alchemist (Hiromu Arakawa is one of Mochizuki’s influences). I think the impromptu comedic aspects lightens the mood from going too edgy and I like that. The bond Oz and Alice formed after their bickering starts a chain of warmth that made me realize why I love this manga so much. Oz and Alice’s relationship is a very special one that I cannot say right now, but it’s a wonderful bond that will solidify as time goes by. Also, props to Sharon for rescuing Oz. Man, she is such an underrated character. Also, keep a close eye on why the Black Rabbit chain looks the most human of the bunch you see in Abyss.
Chapter four tells of what happened after Sharon rescued Oz and he is taken back to the surface. Break and Sharon look the same, so it’s unknown how much time have passed since the ceremony. Break has him under arrest. Break is associated with an organization called Pandora. Pandora researches the Abyss and since Oz got out, he needs to be arrested and researched. Alice gets in the way of the arrest—it turns out that she has escaped with Oz by hiding in his body. Alice is desperate and hostile because of her goal: to find her lost memories. After seeing a vulnerable side to her, Oz decides to help her out as he has a goal too: to find out what his sin truly is.
I love that the end of this volume established a goal for Oz and Alice, the heroine also has a goal. I do love how the atmosphere of the surface world does seem mysterious because of the unknown time frame that happened from the ceremony to his current time at the estate. It also makes you wonder if the surface world really is reality for Oz. Also, Alice is a riot and I love her a lot. The way she changed from violent to vulnerable to haughty in the same chapter is both funny and a bit sad in a way. All this girl wants to find her memories. Break is also the best character of the entire manga, but he’s not my favorite. Break gets the plot rolling as he makes Oz a member of his staff. Xerxes Break will always be the coolest character. Also, keep an eye on all of the characters you see in this chapter because they’re important.
I know this review is a lot different from my reviews of the Tales of Zestiria manga and Witch Hat Atelier because of the fact that I already know everything that happens. Also, Pandora Hearts is a story that you cannot just review from an overall perspective; it’s a story that you have to dig into chapter by chapter because it all connects together after a certain point, hence why I did just that. I did my absolute best to give out my thoughts for each chapter and key points to keep an eye on. Please let me know if this helps you understand the soon-to-be complexness of the manga.
Because I’m fucking biased, this volume is an instant 5/5. It’s a good start to the soon-to-be chaos. If you’re curious, I highly recommend this manga to anyone wanting a good fantasy manga read. I assure you, you will NOT be disappointed. THE ART IS PRETTY TOO! LOOK AT THE COVER! I also have Mochizuki’s first art book which I would love to review once I get the chance.
When will this wonderful manga get a new anime? I’m waiting. I will make live reaction videos if a new anime ever gets announced.

There this undertale MV fic that literally makes me happy stim and I have thoughts. More importantly a very crazy idea on where this is headed.
If you haven’t read the fic, you really should, it is some of the best Undertale Multiverse writing I’ve ever read! Here’s the link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/43143874/chapters/108428305
——SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT——
Ok so one of the things I really like about Buddy’s fics is that Buddy very clearly has read the original error!sans ask blog. They describe Error knitting in ftfo and recognize Error as an alternate timeline of after!tale.
Why is this important? Well, these references don’t just exist in ftfo, they are also in Spilled Ink, but in a very interesting way.
For those who didn’t follow the original error blog, it didn’t really end with a finale. CQ, the author, graciously left us readers a summary of what she planned for the story. Specifically, I’m talking about Blueberror.
Blueberror, is an underswap sans specifically named Blueberry (this will be important later) who gets kidnapped by Error, left alone in the anti void until he goes insane and starts hearing voices. Notably, the voices of the askers (since it’s an ask blog).
Now, who do we know in Spilled Ink who hears voices and has anti void trauma? Yeah Ink!
Spilled Ink shows Ink heading the voices of the Creators, who like the askers in ask error!sans, live in our world and control his life. Unlike Error who is insane, Ink struggles through the existential horror of being played with for entertainment.
So, what I think Buddy is doing is linking the creation of destroyers to protectors.
They are both made in the anti void.
They both hear the voices of the creators.
This makes some very interesting parallels between Error and Ink.
It also makes some very very interesting parallels between Ink and Blueberror. Ink in Spilled Ink is implied to be a version of an Underswap sans, Rus compares Ink to his own brother in his pov chapters. Several other characters remark the ink is “short for a sans”.
In Crayon Queen’s, summary of how ask error would have ended, she describes Blueberror not becoming a destroyer but moving into the omega timeline. He eventually works to protect the multiverse by convincing Error to help fight a larger threat. Hmm, a protector, where have I heard that before?
So, conspiracy theory time.
Tumblr media
What if the determining factor that makes a sans stuck in the anti void a protector or a destroyer is whether or not they’re a swap variant?
So, wouldn’t it be Wild if there was a theoretical swap sans that we don’t know the location of? And wouldn’t it be just insane if a future plot point of the askerror blog was that Blueberror let another swap sans take his place in his au?
THIS IS WHERE THE REAL THEORY BEGINS
What if, the Blueberry in Spilled Ink was turned into Blueberror? How? Great question, idk. Maybe Ink’s friends get too close to figuring out who took him and the creators want a red herring? But like remember in chapter 5 when they were at the omega council meeting and the whole council was convinced the new out code was evil? I wonder what would happen if blueberror showed up right after Ink gets kidnapped. He’s covered in errors, that must mean he’s a new destroyer to counter Sketch right?
Extra angst: the only person who can recognize him is currently be tortured by Nightmare, and no one believes him when he says he used to be a member of the star sanses. His whole world is gone, and everyone he loves hates him and he doesn’t know why.
Does this make sense thematically? Kinda, it’s one really angsty way Ink can get his dearly lost friend back, but at a sharp cost. It would also allow Buddy to use dramatic irony again like how Sketch is hiding his moderator status. Except in a sad twist, Blueberror is trying to show his protector status but no one believes him.
I love this fic so much, and I can’t wait to see where the author takes the story next!

You’ll be safe (to feel our grace)
Jamie Tartt/reader bc there’s a devastating shortage of these fics, Jamie Tartt Imagine

It was a bad beat against Man City. In fact, it was worse than bad. The locker room is quiet when you enter, fully expecting this.
You remember these games. When the match was so hard you would go home and get drunk alone or not say a single word on the bus ride back.
In your fourteen weeks at Richmond, you’d never seen the team this quiet, never seen Dani not try and cheer people up, or Ted make some weird analogy that puts things in the perspective of a guy from Kansas.
They all barely glance at you. you traverse the locker room and make small conversation with Beard, who is standing with his arms crossed and hat tipped down near the far wall.
“Peter Wasnowski wants to talk to you,” you say. Beard meets your eyes. “He wants an honest perspective instead of Ted’s happy-go-lucky schtick.”
While you appreciated Ted’s enthusiasm and belief, sometimes being a coach is worth more than cheer twenty-four seven. As his strategic and medical coordinator, it was up to you to bring him back and to make a good reflection on the team, especially after a loss like this. Beard, stoic, silent, but wise, was your solution.
Beard acknowledges this, but when he makes for the door, a security guard peeks his head in. “Mister Tartt, you’ve a guest. Says he’s your father.” Ah, shit.
Jamie’s told you about his dad. Not much, only that he never had a great relationship with him, not now, not ever. He's always been painted in your eyes as a dick.
That's another factor to your Richmond experience: Jamie Tartt. he’s a soccer legend (although he makes fun of you calling it soccer), and he used to be a grade-A asshole, so you’ve heard from Sam and Roy. He’s Keeley, your best friend’s ex-boyfriend, and so you’ve heard your fair share of horror stories about how he used to be.
And yet…
Ever since you’ve arrived, he’s been nothing short of respectful and kind. He’s pretty funny, you would even admit. He brings you flowers on Mondays, and he turns bright red when you compliment his sense of style, even though he’s so full of himself that you would assume that he got compliments all the time. He has a facade that he puts on for fans: the untouchable, unbeatable star player of Richmond FC, the master ass himself.
His father peeks his head, trying to be comical, but the team barely reacts,
You look at Jamie. He's tense, jaw clenched and fists turning white.
His dad prods and teases about the game, making biting remarks that you just know Jamie’s taking personally. You can tell, from the slight movement of his lip, to the crescents that are sure to be forming in his palms, that he’s about to lose it.
Ted has this look on his face, protective, but not ready to intervene,
How is it, you wonder, that there is a room full of professional athletes- a team, a family - and no one is trying to defend Jamie, who is being verbally and emotionally abused by his father, right in front of them?
Jamie quietly stands up for himself. you feel a surge of pride, but the defense does nothing. his father only gets madder. You can’t help but wonder if he’s drunk or just plain crazy, because no one in their right mind would cross Jamie Tartt.
… right?
His father calls him a name and this is when you decide that Jamie is worth so much more than this. “Okay, that’s enough, sir.” you slip between the two Tartt men. Jamie’s father, crazed and hysterical, looks livid. you try and stay courteous.
“(Y/n),” Jamie’s tone is warning.
“I gave you a chance to talk to your son but I've had about enough. you need to leave.”
You have to fight hard so your voice doesn’t waver too much. There is a slight quake. You ball your hands into fists. “I won't ask again.”
“(Y/n),” Jamie says, more urgently. “don’t.”
But James Tartt Sr. ignores his son and zeros in on you. Your heart pounds in your throat
. “You think you can talk to me like that, you little slag? You fucking think that i’m scared of a little fucking bitch like you?”
“Sir-“ you put a hand out. Beard and Ted seem frozen. Finally, you can see the team reacting. Roy looks about to kill Mr. Tartt.
“Little fucking slut!” the name spits out like poison, and you don’t see the punch coming. The man’s fist collides with the left side of your nose, right next to your eye. The pain is automatic. You hit the ground and there are shouts, but your eye is watering and you can barely see. You can make out Jamie’s voice from the din.
“You don’t touch her!” There’s a sound of a blow and you look to see Mr. Tartt fall to the ground. He groans, but gets up surprisingly quickly for a man his age.
“Okay, you can get that one for free,” he laughs manically.
no.
You find a sudden burst of energy and run straight into Mister Tartt’s midriff. You wrap your arms around him and push him away, like you’ve done many times before, separating teammates from petty locker room squabbles. He smells of stale beer and body odor. Beard has the same idea as you, and together, you rid the locker room of James Tartt Sr.
there’s a wet warmness running down your lip, the taste of iron in your mouth. you press your sleeve to your bleeding nose and squeeze your eyes shut. Beard crouches next to you.
“Let me look,” he instructs, you pull your sleeve away, a drop of blood on your jacket. It’s stopped quickly, and you completely take off your coat. “Not broken. Only bruised.”
You nod.
The sound of shouting echoes down the hall and Beard tips his hat to you, leaving you alone with your back pressed against the wall.
You give yourself thirty seconds to recuperate before re-entering the locker room.
You do a double take in surprise, the sight of Roy Kent hugging Jamie Tartt is not one you ever thought you’d see.
You approach slowly, letting Jamie see you before putting your hand lightly on Roy’s back. He immediately lets go of Jamie, casts you a worried look, but gives you space.
Hesitantly, almost fearfully, Jamie takes your face into his hands, pressing a gentle thumb against the spot were his father hit you.
“He hurt you,” he whispers. You ache at the sound of pain and regret in his voice, knowing he’s probably already tearing himself up for this. You wrap your arms around him, one over his shoulders, one under his arm and pull him close. He returns the hug, holding you tightly. You feel his chest quake against you.
“I’m okay,” you tell him, voice muffled. “you’re going to be, too.”

wip wednesday
oops it's just past midnight here but!! it's fine. thank you @coldshrugs @myreia & @impossible-rat-babies for tagging me friends!! 💜💜💜 tagging @druidgroves @nsewell & anyone else who would like to share!
in a shocking turn of events, this one isn't for leida but for my fo3 lone wanderer turned railroad agent (codename revenant) set post-institute destruction in fo4. it's uhhhh. it's something. still early drafty BUT this scene hasn't left me alone since i first thought about her going undercover and how that might change how certain things shake up.
“It was me, Liam. It was always me, wasn’t it?” Hypatia takes a step closer and the man’s eyes focus on her. Good. She can practically feel the desperation that radiates from him, catching the wild eyed stare that speaks of a world that has been rapidly and violently shattered. Poor bastard. She understands better than he could possibly know. “Think about it—it  was only after I showed up that the messages started arriving, right?” Liam trembles in dawning horror. That’s right. Focus on me. “You used me.”  “Yes,” Hypatia says gravely. “I did. But that woman and her boy? They didn’t. They were just as caught up in this game as you were.” She takes another hesitant step forward, eyes never breaking from Liam’s. “It’s not her you want dead. She didn’t kill your friends.” Hypatia stands tall and meets his gaze coolly. “I did.” Liam’s eyes flicker between her and Shaun, the boy still caught helplessly in Liam’s line of fire. “How could you do it? We were your friends, Hypatia. We—we loved you. You were one of us!” “No, Liam. I wasn’t.” Silence hangs in the air for a long moment. Hypatia sees brief movement from the corner of her eye as Deacon moves slowly for his gun. “Don’t!” Liam barks, finger tightening around the trigger of the gun still aimed at Shaun. “Don’t you move!” “Easy pal, just stretching my arm.” Deacon says, shooting a glance at Mason and raising his arms once again. Hypatia doesn’t miss the slight hand gesture, one of their old signals that tells her careful—this one’s a few rounds short of a full barrel. “Liam.” The sound of his name brings his gaze back to her briefly, and she takes another step forward. The gun in his hand wavers towards her. Come on. Let the kid go. “I know you don’t believe me, but I am sorry it had to come to this.” “I trusted you.” A hardness creeps into Liam’s voice that freezes the blood in her veins. He looks back at Shaun. Not good. Hypatia takes another step forward. Liam meets her stare. “I trusted you…and now they’re all dead.” The shot rings through the air and for a terrifying moment, Hypatia is sure she has failed.  And then her world is an explosion of pain. She’s vaguely aware of the fall, of Shaun’s terrified face and the bullets that rip into Liam’s body.  She blinks and she is staring at the sky. “Rev!” Deacon’s voice sounds far away, though she can still pick out the terror in it. Something in her chest seizes around the bullet. She’s never heard Deacon sound so scared. “Fuck—fuck!”  Don’t be scared, D. Fuck, it hurts to breathe. Probably best just to stop. “Miss Hypatia!” “Shaun honey, go with Nick!” It’ll be alright. “We’ll get Carrington—” Deacon’s face hovers in the center of her vision, scattered patches of irradiated rain clouds overhead frame his face. It’s fitting, she thinks, that the radiation should come for her again in death. I’ve been dead a long time now. “Safe house—” Just took a while for my body to realize. “—got a stimpack.” She doesn’t feel the sting of the injector. She doesn’t feel much of anything anymore. “Don’t you dare die on me.” I’m sorry. I never wanted to leave you. A droplet hits her cheek. It seems the rain won’t wait for her to go. “Not like this.” She closes her eyes. She thinks she hears her name pass as a broken whisper from beside her temple. But I get to see you soon, Dad.

for fanfic writer asks game
😅🥺🤡✍️🍦🍆❌🧐🏆🎃🎯🎉📚🤯💥
😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists? So in high school and college (like 500 years ago in the 2000s before we knew what a cunt JK Terfling was) I wrote Harry Potter fanfic, and I once wrote a 120k word Remus/Tonks/Sirius threesome story that somehow involved no sex or smut whatsoever...and then only after I finished the damn thing did I remember that Tonks and Sirius are biological cousins. Ooops?
🥺 Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels? Goodbyes. They make me weep every time.
🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh? This whole fic, which I wrote stoned for my 1k follower acknowledgement.
✍️ Do you have a beta reader? Just time, dearie. I work alone.
🍦 What's the sweetest fic you've created so far? Probably THIS ONE, a companion oneshot to my mega-series.
🍆 Do you write the spicy stuffs? If so, what's your most popular nsfw fic? Of course I do! Dechire is my nastiest piece of filth yet, and it's probably my most popular thus far. It's on hiatus, but I am in the process of outlining some future chapters so it can continue by summer.
❌ What's a trope you will never write? Probably Mafia AUs. I enjoy reading them well enough and some writers out there put out some fabulous works around the genre. I myself don't think I could remove my mind that far from canon to write it. Like, for some reason I need to have a rational Point-A-to-Point-B path in my head that makes sense for how the canon characters got "here," and I just can't make those connections between any of the Avengers and the mob.
I also can't do incest or stepcest. It's just a bridge too far, man.
🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories? It depends. I always try to get locations accurate if they're on Earth, so I'll do research on cities, street names, and climates. Once in awhile I'll check and see if a canonical fact about a character is real or just something I recall from another fic (I forgot that Steve canonically doesn't get drunk because of his serum).
🏆 What's your most popular fic? I can't really gauge that, because I'm not a popular writer at all. I'm kind of a pathetic little writer on here. An average fic chapter gets between 30-50 interactions at best, and my oneshots only fare better once in a while. I'd say overall these two are the most popular: THIS ONE got enough love to get a full story, and THIS ONE struck a lot of peoples' fancies recently.
🎃 Do you write fics for certain holidays? Which is your favorite holiday inspired fic? I do Secret Santas and holiday tradesies. I like THIS ONE, it's very short (one of my shortest) but it's also a simple, sweet favorite.
🎯 Have any of your readers accurately guessed major plot points? Care to share which? One of my readers guessed that the Y/N of Beauty & the Snake Prince would **SPOILERS** fake her death and leave Asgard to wait for Loki to find her **SPOILERS END** about halfway through, after the villain is introduced
🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success? Interactions, particularly reblogs. Also, if someone loves my stories enough to drop a message I feel honored. If enough people ask for a oneshot to be continued, I also find that to be an exceptional compliment. Again, I don't think I'd know what it's like to actually be a success yet.
📚 Would you ever want to turn writing into a career? In an ideal world? Um, fuck yeah.
🤯What's a genre you struggle with as a writer (ex. romance, action, etc.)? I still think I kind of suck at smut, even though I'm getting better. I also have a hard time writing horror, because I hate being afraid. I'm a weenie like that.
💥How do you feel about criticism? It has to come from a place of sincerity, but if it does, I happily take and consider critique.

Monster Halloween Blind Dates: Part One
Hi - I'd love a monster blind date! I'm 40/f, dyed bright red hair and, er, curvy... i love history, sewing, food and drink, delicious living, singing, languages...i like all non-humanoid monsters. <3 thank you!
There’s a small dirt road off the beaten path. The traffic and closed roads for Halloween trick or treating has made getting a home a, excuse the pun, nightmare.  You tried the mapped out detour, but even that felt like it was trying to lead you further and further from home. The small dirt path looks as though it cuts through directly towards your place. And as cute as the trick or treaters are, you’re exhausted and just want to get home to enjoy your own goodies.
You drive onto the path, wondering how you had never seen this little road before. The trees are closing in, the path is getting narrower. You worry this was a walking path and not made for driving.  The trees open up again, widening to the sky and a massive cornfield.
Hitting the brakes, dust clouds up around you, blinding your field of vision for a moment. A cornfield? Since when was there a cornfield? You think you might need to turn back, as you have no intention of getting out to inspect. But as the dust dies down, you see something watching you from the corn. Bright golden eyes gleam like flickering candles from the stalks. You hold your breath, having seen too many horror movies taking place in cornfields. The eyes approach, followed by a long, willowy body. Is it a snake? You think to yourself. No. It’s dragon!
The more the dragon slithers out, you see its scales match the color of the dry stalks, it has silken tufts of hair resembling corn silk. The dragon appears, holding a giant wooden bowl in their hands.
“I have not had trick or treaters in years! I am so excited!” The dragons peaks with a deep but quiet voice. “I have full sized candy bars.” He shows you the bowl, filled to the brim with all sorts of candy. His smile is too sweet, and against instinct you step out, taking your favorite from the bowl.
His name is Lucid, and he’s been so lonely. You end up talking to him, learning he had been in your town for hundreds of years, having been raised there to protect the crops, but the humans who raised him were chased away, leaving him alone.
You promise Lucid to visit again, and his smile is radiant.
Hi! I'm donating to help out and for the Monster Blind Date. I'm a cis, plus-sized woman, 5'4", aged 27, who's a natural ginger. I have long hair with an undercut. I'm an introvert who loves video games, drawing, and am obsessed with chocolate! I am also bi, but prefer women. @lilidafox
Every halloween, the local chocolatier opens her doors to the children of the neighborhood. But only for a short while. Herbusiness is decorated to the nines, and is always the place to go during Halloween. People rush there to be sure they get through the doors before they close. Those who enter are privy to a huge selection of chocolates, her ‘planner’ for the following year as she calls it. The chocolatier is private, and not many people have had the pleasure of meeting her. But her chocolates are some of the best in the world.
That halloween you were lucky enough to be one of the participants. The crowd wasn’t your scene, but for this you were willing to risk it. Staff members dressed in halloween flair led you to a dining hall where you were served courses of fine chocolate, as well as a notebook to write your thoughts on each morsel.
A small break in the meal saw hot chocolate, cider, and drinks for the adults. You broke from the crowd, wanting a moment to have a fresh breath of air. The hallway you found was empty and quiet, barely lit to keep people away. The whole place smelled like chocolate, but this hallway had a faint scent to it that was no sweet or confection.
Then, a door opened towards the end of the hallway and light spilled out from inside. “Come join me for a drink,” someone beckoned. Suddenly a staff member appeared right next to you, handing you two new drinks to take. It was the chocolatier himself who was inviting you!
You found the open door was the kitchen, and it was pristine and glowing in how pure it was. To the far back, there was a small table and chairs, with someone sitting in one. She wore a large pumpkin over her head and had on long black gloves.
She stood as you approached, and the pumpkin’s face moved in response. She greeted you, introducing herself as Jacqueline. She pulled out your seat and took one of the glasses you were carrying. You noticed her hands had extra fingers.
Jacqueline sat down with you, and inside her pumpkin there was a light glowing. It was strange, Jacqueline seemed strange, but then she started asking you how you enjoyed her chocolates. You were awkward at first, but happily went into what you liked and didnt. Jacqueline nodded. Taking in everything you were giving her. She went into detail on some of her confections, telling you how she did it, as well as ideas on how she could improve.
The two of you ended up talking for a long time, longer than you expected. The staff came and went, and Jacqueline eventually realized the time. She walked you to the front door, and you asked if you could see her without his costume.
“Costume? Oh no. I’m not wearing any costume,” she laughed.
You stomach dropped for a moment, and then you had to smile.
“Our secret?” Jacqueline whispered.
You nodded to him, promising not to whisper a word of it as long as he invited you back. Jacqueline happily agreed, promising a proper date which she could cook for.
Hello! My Tumblr tag is @world-of-shadows-and-music. Could I have a blind date in the forest? I am 5'1 female, have short red hair and hazel eyes. I enjoy drawing animals and plants while exploring the natural parks near where I live. Hiking and exploring are my favorite things!
The hiking trail was decorated and glowing with all sorts of lights. Booths were set up at the base with snacks, candy, and drinks. The further up the path was set as a sort of haunted walking tour for the kids. You could already hear screams, the sound effects of a chainsaw and a wolf howling. You were walking around, taking mental pictures for ideas you could draw later.
You were walking around, enjoying yourself when you noticed something moving from the corner of your eyes. Under a booth there was something wiggling, it looked like a tree root. But it moved, pulling away carrying a candy bar in its clutches. It slithered back into the woods, going down the advanced trail.
For some weird reason, you decided to follow it. It went slowly, so you could keep up pace. The lights hanging around also illuminated the path so you could follow it. Eventually, the root with the candy bar went up a tree. You came to the base of the tree and looked around it. You then looked up, seeing something perched amongst the branches. Glowing green eyes spotted you and the figure seemed to melt into the tree.
The shape reappeared on the other side of the trunk, the roots rose up front he ground, coiling about you and pulling you closer. The shape common from the tree reached out, long fingers too hold of your shoulders, dragging you close to the rabbit-like face carved from wood. The green eyes glowed brighter, and you could see the candy bar wrapper sticking out from the moss on their chest.
You offered out a candy bag a sweet kid had given you when you arrived on the haunted trail. The creature took the candy, and happily began to munch.
You smiled and reminded them you were coming.
The dryad gave you a look, kissing you before going back to their treats. You smiled, sitting down amongst the roots which formed a seat for you. The dryad put their arms around you, snuggling up close and thanking you for the candy.
Heard Halloween and came running. 6' blond masc ex-forester who forgets not to swear so much, open to anyone who can defeat me in combat or make me laugh too much to keep fighting.
There was a small valley where the halloween rumble was every year. You were prepared for it, most of Hearthway Hollow was actually. Even if you weren’t a werewolf yourself, you still liked to participate every year. Magda was there as well, and you were eyeing her from across the field. In her shifted form, you could see where she was intimidating, but you were eager to take her on. The two of you were rivals at the mill, competing often in menial things.
Magda tagged you for a fight, and the whole crowd held their breath as werewolf on human fights were uncommon during the Halloween rumble. Of course there was a struggle, Magda looked strong, but was far stronger than that. She gave you a run for your money, but you eventually found how to hold your own.
It was a stalemate for a while, but Magda eventually pinned you. She got a grin on her face and she licked her teeth.
“That decides it,” she said. “You’re making dinner.”
Hoping for a blind date! I’m 5 ft 6, long blonde hair, blue eyes, chubby. For the Halloween theme: my costumes this year are Mabel from Gravity Falls and Data from Star Trek, and I’m giving out Rice Krispie treats to the kids! I love a PSL or chai latte, and pumpkin bread!
It was a shockingly cold halloween. Children were running around in their costumes with their coats over top, giving a certain theme to the atmosphere without really being a theme. Luckily, your outfit already included a really heavy sweater, so you were comfortable as you sat on your stoop.
Your neighbor Albert’s yard was decorated so the kids could wander around, and he would throw candy at them he attached to rubber bats to scare them. Their screams and giggles made you smile.
There was a lull in kids, as you were sure the pavilion was opening with their special event. You were sitting peacefully, scrolling through an app when something landed in your lap. The little bat with a candy bar attached looked up at you with a warped open mouth. You looked to Albert who waved at you.
The two of you met at the end of our lawns, he looked great in his Dracula costume, but you had to ask him if it wasn’t a little on the nose.
He took off the black wig for a moment, scratching behind his pointed ear, which let his long white hair fall. He laughed, saying he thought it was funny. You smirked back, asking him how he was enjoying the evening.
“It's my favorite night of the year. It reminds me of bygone times.” Albert said with a wistful voice. He looked out at the sleepy children being carried home by their parents. Teens holding their younger siblings' hands. “It's when I feel young again.”
You rub your hands together from the cold, and he takes notice. “Would you like something warm to drink?” He asked. “I also have some baked goods I made in case I ran out of candy bats.”
“You bake?” You asked in surprise.
“I enjoy the process.” Albert smiled. “Just because I’m a vampire doesn’t mean I still don’t enjoy the comforts of humanity.”
Inside his house was a bit of a mess, halloween decor front he yard was stacked about, as well as his usual outdoor decor. His kitchen was warm and smelled like every fall scent wrapped up into one.
He poured you a cup of chai, then sliced off some gooey pumpkin brownies for you. As your hands warmed back up, you noticed Albert watching you with a certain glint to his ruby eyes.
“Whats your favorite halloween treat?” You asked.
“Blood, with a touch of cinnamon,” he murmured.
You glanced towards the window and shyly back at him. “Being bite by a vampire on halloween, it wouldn’t be a cliche would it?”
