(So many sentences) Sunday
It's Sunday here, so I'm getting the ball rolling with some big brother Buck.
...
Turns out, asking your best friend to marry you is easier said than done.
The last time he’d asked someone to marry him, his dad had put a hand on his shoulder and told him to do the right thing. Shannon was pregnant and Eddie was at least half responsible, so they were married a month later.
They’d been young and terrified, but Eddie doesn’t regret his time with Shannon, not when it gave him Chris.
He wants to do it right this time, and it’s not just Buck he needs to consider. There are four of them in this family. Because that’s what they are. That’s how Eddie’s been thinking of them, even before Buck and Zac moved in two years ago.
In that time they’ve been raising two kids together. They’ve been to parent-teacher interviews, school field trips, and supervised birthday parties. They’ve nursed both kids (and each other) through injury and illness together, sitting for hours in the ER when Chris broke his arm and when Zac had appendicitis.
(keep reading under the cut)
Eddie spends the whole weekend stewing over it, trying to get Chris and Zac alone without Buck around to overhear. It’s not easy when they’re both either at work together or at home together.
A whole week passes before he gets the opportunity.
It’s Tuesday afternoon. Buck’s at work, having swapped a shift with Jackson so he could have the next day off to chaperone a field trip at Zac’s school.
The sound of screeching children drowns out the low rumble of the engine as Eddie waits, windows rolled down, for the pick-up line to crawl forward.
It’s hot, and the AC is broken again, pushing through stagnant air that’s only marginally better than the warm breeze blowing in through the window.
Eddie wipes sweaty palms against his jeans and lets the truck roll forward to the front of the pick-up bay.
“Eddie!” Zac is as enthusiastic as ever as he throws the back door open and clambers into the back seat. He freezes halfway across the seats, leaning over into the front. “Where’s Buck?” he asks, peering around like his six-foot brother might magically materialise in the front seat.
“He’s at work, remember,” Eddie tells him, biting back a smile at the confused look on the ten-year-old’s face.
“Oh, yeah.” The confusion clears and Zac grins, scrambling into his seat. “Did you know you can tell the age of a mammoth by counting the rings on its tusks?”
“Uh, no?” Eddie blinks at the sudden conversation shift and turns to shoot Zac a fold smile. “Seatbelt.”
“Yeah, it’s like how you can count the rings on a tree,” Zac continues, reaching for his seat belt. “And there’s a mummified baby mammoth that we might get to see.”
“On the field trip?” Eddie asks, piecing the puzzle together.
He’s not sure who’s more excited for the trip– Buck or Zac. Their kitchen table is currently buried under the pages and pages of notes and education resources Buck had printed off the museum’s website.
“Hey Dad?” The front passenger door swings open and Chris shoves his crutches into the footwell. “Can I go to Matt’s house after school tomorrow?”
“Not on a school night,” Eddie tells him, waiting for his son to put on his seatbelt. “Maybe on the weekend.”
“But Dad,” Chris starts, “he just got Tears of the Kingdom and he said I could play it.”
“Aren’t you still grounded?” Zac asks from the back seat.
“No, Dad said I’m not anymore.”
“It’s still a school night,” Eddie says, flicking on the indication to pull away from the school. “And you have homework. Why don’t you wait until the weekend?” he suggests. “You could have a sleepover.”
“Yeah, okay.” Chris pulls his cellphone out of this bag and Eddie turns his attention back to the road, his fingers drumming against the steering wheel.
“Hey, so I was thinking we could stop at the beach before going home,” he says, his hands suddenly feeling sweaty again.
“Really?” Zac asks, his reflection in the mirror leans forward in his seat and Eddie can feel his feet swinging against the back of his chair. “Can we get ice cream?”
“I thought I had homework,” Chris says slowly, lowering his phone.
“I know, we won’t stay long. I just— there’s something I wanted to talk to you about,” Eddie says, glancing back up to the mirror. “Before we get home.”
Chris’ expression twists into something thoughtful. “Is it about Buck?” he asks. “Is that why you picked us up from school?”
“I pick you up from school all the time.”
“Yeah, with Buck,” Chris responds, his tone edging into suspicion. “Because you hate driving.”
“I don’t hate driving,” Eddie argues.
“But Buck drives all the time,” Zac pipes up, joining Chris in this gang up on Eddie hour. “You never drive.”
“Buck’s at work,” Eddie reminds them. “And yeah, fine. It is about Buck, but it’s also about you guys and me and—” he stops and forces himself to take a breath. “Let’s just get to the beach and then we can talk.”
“Wait, are we getting ice cream because it’s bad?” Chris asks, his voice wavering. “Did something bad happen?”
Eddie resists the urge to bang his head against the steering wheel. God, he’s already screwing this up.
“It’s nothing bad,” he says instead and pulls into a parking spot, cutting the engine. “It’s good. I promise.”
They all bundle out of the car and head over to the little van that sells soft serve and slushies, and Eddie buys both kids an ice cream, stuffing his pockets with napkins for the inevitable mess that will follow.
They walk down to the beach, Eddie carrying Chris’ ice cream as they pick their way across the sand to find a spot near the water.
“So,” Eddie starts, handing over the ice cream. He wipes his hands on his jeans again, the stickiness more to do with nerves than the dripping mess Chris is eagerly digging into. “I wanted to talk to both of you about me and Buck and—” he hesitates, bracing himself. “How would you guys feel if me and Buck got married?”
“You’re getting married?” Zac sits up on his knees, his eyes lighting up.
Eddie laughs, handing over a napkin. “Well, I haven’t asked him yet,” he admits. “But I want to.” He glances across at Chris. “Only if both of you are okay with it.”
“Yes!” Zac cheers, the ice cream dripping down his hand forgotten in his excitement.
“Chris?”
His son’s lips press together deep in thought. “If you and Buck get married, does that mean he’ll be my dad too?”
“If that’s something you want,” Eddie tells him, watching carefully for Chris’s reaction.
A bright smile spreads across Chris’ face and he nods fervently.
“Yeah, that would be cool.”
The last of Eddie’s anxiety fades.  “So, you’re happy if I ask him?”
“Yes!” Both kids nod and Zac says, “Me and Chris will be brothers.” Then he notices the ice cream running down his arm, soaking into his sleeve and hurries to lick it up.
“No we wouldn’t,” Chris tells him. “Not really, Buck isn’t your dad.” He finishes his ice cream. “I think you’d be my uncle.”
Zac’s smile falters. “But you’re older, and I don’t want to be your uncle.”
“You can be brothers,” Eddie tells him, handing over more napkins so they can start cleaning themselves up. “But you can’t say anything to Buck. It’s got to be a secret, just for a little while.”
“Okay.”
Nodding, Eddie lets out a long breath. The conversation had been easier than expected, though in hindsight it shouldn’t have been a surprise. Both boys love Buck as much as Eddie does.
Still, that’s step one done. Now all Eddie needs is a ring and the perfect moment.
Easy.

thinking about the fact that chimney was on the way to the bachelor party when he pulled over.
because yeah he didn’t really want one, but buck clearly put a lot of effort in and it’s his way of showing he cares and he really does love his dumbass little brother enough to indulge him, and when the dust settled he probably felt bad that buck spent all night thinking he’d ghosted him.

*Buck teaching Ravi and Albert how to bake bread*
Buck: What do we say when making bread?
Ravi, glumly: That's the dough rising.
Buck: And what do we NOT say?
Albert, sadly: That's the yeast fucking.

Tease Tidbit Tuesday!
tagged by @thewolvesof1998 and @wikiangela (you should 100% check out their works!!)
Here's a little bit more dad!Buck, I swear I'm so close to finishing chapter one and then I can FINALLY publish it
Eddie helps Buck get the pancakes ready (Eddie will argue he helps, but in reality, he gives Buck a shoulder rub while Buck cooks. After the great waffle-fire of last year, Eddie isn’t allowed to cook anymore) and when they’re ready, him and Buck trail out to the dining room with plates, cutlery, and enough pancake toppings to sink a ship. Aidan, who’s still sitting in Christopher’s lap, lights up when he sees his dads entering the room and claps his hands delightedly, before raising his arms, begging for Buck to take him. “Let’s get you into your highchair, shall we bud?” Buck says as he swings Aidan out of Christopher’s arms, blowing a raspberry on his stomach. Aidan giggles, the noise light and silvery, filling Buck’s chest up with a warm glow. Man, what he wouldn’t do to hear his boy laugh like that all the time. “Has cake now, Daddy?” Aidan asks hopefully as Buck clips him into the highchair. There’s a snort from the other side of the table and Buck turns to see Eddie sniggering into his fist, sharing an amused look with Christopher. “Food motivated, just like his Dad” Eddie teases with a grin. Buck sends him a playful eyeroll and turns back to Aidan. “Is pancakes good enough, my liege?” he asks, pointing to the stack of pancakes on the table. Aidan looks like he’s about to protest the semantics of cake vs. pancakes but he nods, reaching for a plate. “Pancakes good” he replied, stumbling a little over the long word. Buck places a plate on the table in front of the highchair, transferring a pancake to it and picking up the maple syrup. Aidan watches with fascination as Buck drizzles the pancake with syrup, using the flat of the knife to spread it evenly. Eddie and Christopher are hoeing into their own pancakes with the background and there must be something about watching his Papa and big brother eat that has Aidan deciding that he also needs to have his breakfast immediately. Buck fends off little, grabbing hands as Aidan tries to grab the pancake and shove it in his mouth whole. He’s trying to cut it into small, bite sized pieces with every intention of feeding them to Aidan, rather than letting the kid eat with his hands like they usually let him do. Buck loads up the fork with pancake and hovers it in front of Aidan’s mouth, frowning when the boy keeps his mouth stubbornly closed. “Baby, you gotta open up to eat” he says as he nudges the fork against Aidan’s lips, smearing them with syrup. “Do it myself” Aidan replies, reaching out to grab the fork. Buck pulls it back, a little hesitant. “It’s gonna be messy, Aid. Daddy can feed it to you so we can stay nice and clean” he explains, moving the fork towards his mouth again. Aidan crosses his arms, fixing Buck with a deep frown that has Eddie cackling once again. “I big boy!” he says, pouting. “Give up, babe, he’s not gonna back down” Eddie advises, and Buck relents with a sigh, handing the fork over to an extremely pleased Aidan, who immediately shoves the pancake in his mouth. “Bags not doing bath time” Buck says but Eddie fixes him with a sharp look. “I just did bath time, I shan’t be repeating that experience for at least another 48 hours, thank you.” “Looks like you’re up, Chris.” Christopher snorts through a mouthful of pancake. “You wish” he replies. “I’ll be helping Dad get the place ready for guests.”

"Okay, whatever," Maddie says, literally waving Eddie off (with good reason, too, it's her wedding Eddie, get it together).
That man is her annoying little brother's annoying best friend, and she is SO done with the both of them.

wip wednesday 🫧
hi <3 i was tagged by @giddyupbuck, @fortheloveofbuddie, @wikiangela, and @daffi-990 mwah thank you all so much!
i've been working on the heart attack fic, so have a little something sweet before it all goes sour
Eventually, Eddie and Albert return from their search. Albert sidles up next to Buck and grabs hold of the hose, offering support, while Eddie jerks hard on Buck’s turnout to spin him around. Buck notices he’s not wearing his oxygen mask or air tank and immediately starts fussing.  Eddie accepts Buck’s fretting with a dirty, crooked smile. “Gave my tank to one of the victims,” he says. “I’m going to triage for some oxygen.”  Buck’s chest tightens and he squeezes Eddie’s shoulder. “You okay?” he asks, a half yell. Their radios aren’t needed; they’re close enough to read one another’s lips.   “Yeah,” Eddie answers, frowning. Buck can see his tight lips and pinched forehead, a crinkle in the middle of his brow, and it’s equal parts endearing and worrisome. “Just—can’t take a deep breath. Air’s hot.”  “Are you—” “Just out of air,” Eddie interrupts, smiling softly. He tugs on Buck’s turnout again, something he must’ve picked up from Chris, and Buck steps impossibly closer, knees knocking into Eddie’s. “I’m okay.”  Buck nods, as placated as he’s going to be. “Be careful.” He squeezes Eddie’s shoulder once again before dropping his hand. “Follow the hose.”  “I will.” Eddie’s smile grows, crooked and bright. He fists Buck’s turnout and pulls him close, butting his forehead against the visor of Buck’s mask like an affectionate dog. “See you out there, cowboy.”  Dazed, a little mesmerized and a lot in love, Buck watches Eddie follow the hose carefully, quickly, until his figure’s concealed by smoke and he alerts over the radio he’s made it outside. He shakes his head, clears the warm fuzzy feeling Eddie always seems to cultivate when he’s sweet, and gets back to work.  Albert nudges his shoulder. “What was that about?”  Buck grins, cheeks hot. “I’ll tell you when you’re older,” he replies, chuckling at Albert and Hen’s twin bark of laughter.

I’ve been frantically finishing a quilt all week so again I don’t really have actual new writing to share but I’ve been vaguely thinking about a Daniel lives au that I’m not sure I’ll actually write? The idea is he’d grow up and implode under the pressure of being the perfect son his parents did so much to save, unable to live up to their idea of him, and then feeling guilty for ‘wasting his life’ because Buck literally exists because of him so he owes it to his baby brother to not be a fuck up, right? Then Buck grows up the hero baby who can never quite accomplish anything better than saving Daniel, who then gets the double pressure of “Daniel didn’t become who we wanted him to be, now we will shape Evan into the perfect son”. And then Maddie gets sort of forgotten and looked over in all of this :( So yeah another sad idea from yours truly I’m sure you’re all shocked. Here’s the vague outline of events I have in my head (substance abuse cw):
-Daniel gets sick and Evan is born, and he loves his baby brother more than anything.
-Daniel is sixteen and gets very very drunk at a party and crashes dad’s nice new car on the way home. Screaming fight with his parents in the ER that Maddie tries to diffuse. Buck is only eight and was left home alone and comes into Daniels room late at night because he’s scared and worried and Daniel comforts him.
-Maddie is married and none of them were at the wedding, Daniel is 23 and left rehab before he was finished with the program, Buck is 15 and so fucking lonely, suffocating in their parents house. Daniel sees how miserable he is and tries to convince their parents to let Buck live with him, but he has no job or place to live and isn’t sober, and they turn him away.
-Two years later Maddie has got him more successfully through rehab (paying for it herself, their parents have cut him off entirely) and he goes back for Buck who has tested out of high school and left town as soon as he turned 18.
-By complete random chance, Daniel and Buck end up in the same town while Buck is working as a ranch hand. It’s a joyful reunion but then Buck accidentally comes out and Daniel reacts badly and it devolves into a big fight about their childhood.
-Daniel helps Maddie escape Doug and get to California. Weird bad feelings that he shoves down about her wanting to be near Buck instead of him (he has some job that makes him travel a lot, he understands it’s stability she wants but it still makes him feel like a fuck up who can’t be trusted to help.) Tense dinner with the three of them. Buck is still so young but he’s just gone through Abby and he’s just met Eddie and he has a job he loves and wow this kid is growing up. Daniel wishes he could have been a part of it.
-Maybe a series of phone calls after all of Buck’s near death experiences? Daniel doesn’t actually visit but they get closer despite the distance.
-He finally visits again a bit after the lightning strike. Buck is mostly recovered, and he’s with Eddie and is so so happy, and Maddie is doing really well and is getting married again soon, and Daniel has been sober for a long time and has a job he likes and maybe a girlfriend, and, like, they all survived. They all made it. They love each other. There’s regret, there’s a lot of wishing things happened differently, but they’re finally all here together and things are good.

I’m really hoping to post this by the weekend. It’s juuust about done, so fingers crossed.

“Can he hear us?”
Eddie opens his mouth but no sound comes out.
“I bet he can,” Bobby says, softly. “You should talk to him. Let him know you’re here.”
Chris nods, stepping up closer to the bed.
“Hey Buck. It’s Christopher.” He balances one of his crutches against the bed and reaches for Buck’s arm. His hand hovers without touching, and he looks to Bobby, uncertain.
“You won’t hurt him,” Bobby tells him, nodding towards Buck, and Chris rests his hand on Buck’s arm.
“I know you’re sick,” Chris says, “but it’s only temporary. You’re gonna be okay.”
Eddie blinks, his eyes burning.
On the other side of the bed, Zac still hasn’t moved, his eyes fixed on Buck.
From the corner of his eye, Eddie watches Bobby pull Zac over, his arm wrapping around the small shoulders. He can hear the quiet murmur as Bobby explains how the machines are helping Buck as Zac listens, pale-faced.
