do you perhaps have a pattern for that gentleman's corset? asking for a friend
Hi!
Unfortunately, I do not have a pattern to give you, but I do have a way for you/your friend to draft your own.
(If you really do just want a ready pattern, I'm pretty sure my #binding stays or #flattening stays tags include some etsy shops that have binders with corsetry methods)
I'm presuming you are here because that 5 year old post of the binder with elizabethan stays method is going around again (left). I've also since made a pair of stays that flatten nicely as well (right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left pattern was drafted with the free Custom Corset Pattern Generator from elizabethancostume.net. You just input a little extra breathing room in the waist and the bust measurement you can comfortably squish your chest down to.
However, that was many years ago and I have since had more success using a Mariah Pattie's circular drafting technique. It has so much less measuring and math and it gave me a better fit.
Here's my post on that technique, along with her video.
And here's my post amending that to a binder instead of stays.
In short, all you need is:
a large piece of paper
a string
a pen
a measuring tape and
the measurement of your waist circumference
the measurement of your chest bound down circumference
the measurement of the vertical distance between your waist and chest.
You draw out the pattern following the video + my explanation post (this takes me about 30 minutes vs the hour or two for drafting the usual way). Then I make it longer with a cm or two at the bottom and at least 3 cm on top. One change I've made since that post was to pinch out a little dart at the arms to make it lie smoother under clothes. One day I'm going to experiment with adding straps to this design, but today is not that day.
I kept mine quite low, because I wanted a 18th century round chested look, but with straps and longer stays you could probably go flatter (depending on how much you have to flatten of course).
This is what it looks like under a waistcoat tailored according to a menswear manual:
Tumblr media
i'll also drop here the posts of other people who've I've talked about their binders using corsetry and tailoring methods: horsehair canvas summer binder, there's another one about how convenient ribbons are for easy adjustment but i can't find it (EDIT: found it!)
Good luck and do let me know if you've advanced this research any further!

ok from reading a bit you guys overblew it and overbinding whilst making it so some types of top surgery that require more elasticity the two examples i saw being peri and keyhole which is because they both need skin elasticity which overbinding can reduce skin elasticity overtime they also both require smaller cups which means that would probably be out the window for me anyways while yes over use of a binder over long periods of time can lead to damaging ribs and lungs it should only effect your options for types of top surgery you will still be able to get top surgery it just may not be the type you could've gotten had you not overbinded for however long you had this habit
NOW MOOTS DONT TRY AND GIVE ME A PANIC ATTACK RIGHT WHEN I WAKE UP AGAIN ALR!?!?!??!??!

How to bind safely without a binder?
it's a bit hard to bind safely without a binder, but I recommend trans tape, a compression bra, or a sports bra. if you wear something tight, make sure you don't wear it for too long, that you don't sleep in it, and that you don't excersize. DO NOT USE BANDAGES OR TAPE. buy something that's made for the purpose, and if you can't, try a sports bra, baggy shirts, and trans tape if you can buy it. hope this helped!

ive always been curious about the scenarios where ppl want the will to be brought up bc to me ive always thought it would only make sense as like a dumb offhanded "of course buck is here hes my family hes the guy i put in my will" type of line bc. i feel like people are forgetting that while socially speaking buck takes on a caring role for chris in their family dynamic he literally doesnt have any rights for custody of chris unless eddie is literally dead. like hes not currently chris' legal guardian. he would Become that if eddie died and chris were still a minor. right now as much as they love each other buck is legally just some guy who comes over a lot.

pk is such a fantastic character. "oh, the king of the land discovered that a divine plague was set upon the dreams of his people and soon they would all die. because it was a plague of dreams, literally everybody would be affected, because it's a mind curse. to solve this problem, he figured he needed to contain the whole plague with a creature that didn't think at all, but also couldn't be controlled by it, so he used his own children as fodder to create such a creature that wouldn't resist being hurt and the angry goddess could use as a punching bag. the sheer amount of children he needed to kill to make this happen cannot be quantified, and everyone who tries has come up with several million at the minimum.
unfortunately, he was right. this did, in fact, work, and even when it started to fail another one of his children who would throw itself at saws and thorns just to keep moving forward solved the problem some other way. so really all we can do is go wow, that's fucked, and then move on. it's not like he wasn't sad about it. we haven't seen him in a few centuries so he may have killed himself. but he was right. he just also killed a million babies. as you do."

Things people don't tell you about wearing a binder
1. Super super super sweaty underneath, but not as bad as you think
2. You gotta reposition stuff sooooo often, idk if it's just mine, but i gotta move my chest into the right position all the time
3. Your chest is not supposed to be completely flattened out, its supposed to make your chest into a more typically masculine shape (aka more like pecs)
4. It helps to already have some chest muscle to make it look more natural (building muscle at all is good, will make larger chest look more natural)

most irritating person you have ever met, when there are 2 studies on a given topic, both are pre-prints, they had tiny sample sizes chosen from statistically anomalous subsections of the population, the p-values are whack, they at best only establish correlation, and they came to diametrically opposed conclusions: listen to the science :)

Not really a question, but a safe and easily accessible way to hide breasts without a binder is fashion tape. You can find it very easily in shops like Rossmann. It’s usually used to hold risky clothing in place, but you can use it to pull back your chest by putting a stripe closer to the middle of the chest vertically and two stripes diagonally, one higher and the other under the breast. Basically stretching the tiddies to make them appear more flat
This is great! Thanks! To anyone who might be trying to bind, this seems safer than some alternatives. Thanks, anon!

I just saw that ask where someone says that wants a flat chest but don't want to use a binder for recent things said about it. What things??? Binders are harmful??
I think what they meant was that they've heard some things said about GC2B specifically (as of late, there were some reports of structural issues that concern some people). Binders aren't inherently harmful. There are harmful ways to bind, but that doesn't mean that binding is inherently harmful.
What is harmful to do while binding:
Binding too long for your body
Binding with binders that are too small
Binding with materials which aren't body-safe (e.g. duct tape, materials that are restrictive or too tight)
Sleeping in a binder or doing extrenuous activities like lifting weights
Using binders from places you aren't sure are safe (e.g. Amazon binders)
Binding while ill or unable to breathe
Binding can carry some risk to it, and you combat that by being informed about your body, needs, and what safety looks like for you. There are unsafe ways to bind with any method - for instance, it may be unsafe to bind with tape if you are allergic to adhesives, but on the flipside, there are safe ways to bind with any method.
Some binder companies are more reputable than others, and honestly? That's just the reality for pretty much everything else you would purchase. When you're looking into a binder or company, make sure to do research. Looking into independent reviews, for example, can be a great start.
If you're concerned about GC2B specifically, that's fine. If you don't think binding with that specific company would be safe for your body, try looking into other companies. I've heard multiple people say good things about For Them, Spectrum Outfitters, and Underworks makes binders specifically for binding. Those can be good places to start can get an idea of what you're looking for if you are unsure.

hey tumblr baddies that use chest binders
idk how common knowledge this is but my HRT provider told me this like. when I started T and we had the intro meeting. so like more than 2 years ago and I'm realizing not everyone knows about this ??? IF YOU USE A CHEST BINDER. MOISTURIZE YOUR TITS. NO I AM NOT KIDDING. THIS IS NOT A GOOF. Chest binding fucks with your skin elasticity over time !! and this is bad for your general skin health, especially if you continue to bind with bad skin elasticity. but more importantly for those who want to get top surgery ONE OF THE THINGS THE SURGEN CHECKS FOR WHEN DOING YOUR EVAL IS SKIN ELASTICITY. IT CAN BE MAJORLY IMPORTANT IN WHAT OPITONS YOU HAVE FOR TOP SURGERY.
so yeah, stay safe and moisturize :)
