before i started my deity work with Aphrodite i prayed to her to make me look like my best self and the day after that my hair started to curl randomly (i have no one in the family with curly hair) and i came out as genderfluid and i still was skeptical
then she gave me so many signs
i literally smelled apple chupa chups when i fell asleep (i didnt have anything apple scented in my room and the window was closed)
i was getting angel numbers constantly
i found a literal shell necklace when i went to throw the trash out
and i was still like "nah cus what if its a misunderstanding"
my soulmate was like "bitch youre so oblivious shes literally calling to you about your cars extended warranty"
and so i asked "if Aphrodite is reaching out to me please show me yourself in my dreams"
AND GUESS WHAT
i dreamed about watching a youtube video called "working with Aphrodite: deity work 101" and there was such a beautiful woman in the video she had a dark skin and long black wavy hair and very thick eyebrows and plump lips and i woke up and i was like "wow she was so pretty" and i was STILL skeptical cus i was like "nah maybe its just because i was thinking about her so much" and my soulmate was FED UP with my dumb bitch shit
and so it was time to do a deity spread because you know maybe its okay and if not then well
and i found a deity spread (i now make my own)
i pulled the card
it was nine of pentacles
i checked the deities associated with the card
"oh, thats random"
another deity spread
the strenght
"oh its the same deity"
ok i think somethings not adding up
and then i researched Bastet
"hmm cats yes, oh dancing, hmmm yeah okay"
and i looked at past me crying randomly because i got the urge to get a cat
and i looked at past me smelling incense randomly
and i looked at past me getting literal signs from her for as long as i could and i was like
"oh my god im so sorry i didnt know"
and so i started my deity work with both of them the same night
past me is stupid, oblivious and made mistakes but past me got me to now where i have a happy established relationship with my goddesses and im forever thankful for that
their altars at first were just sitting on my plant shelf
it was messy
Bastet only had my old silver cat statue, my cat tarot deck (which btw shows her character perfectly) and some tigers eye and tourmaline
Aphrodite only had some rose quartz a drawing of her that i made and a pale pink candle
now we're here and their altars are always full of food offerings to the point i had to upgrade their space to the shelf above
they still share an altar but theyre both okay with it
so uh yeah
just wanted to share this weird story of how i started
(then Aphrodite invited Apollo to my space who helped me a lot with my trauma, then i reached out to Dionysus and Marzanna and now we're here 5 ancient gods sitting in my room watching me read gay fanfiction at night)

February’s full Moon is a “Micromoon” this year. Think of this term as the opposite of a “Supermoon.” It simply means that the full Moon is at its farthest point from Earth (not the nearest point).
The explanation behind February’s full Moon name is a fairly straightforward one: it’s known as the Snow Moon due to the typically heavy snowfall that occurs in February. On average, February is the United States’ snowiest month, according to data from the National Weather Service. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver, who had visited with the Naudowessie(Dakota), wrote that the name used for this period was the Snow Moon, “because more snow commonly falls during this month than any other in the winter.”

Imbolc is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of spring. Most commonly it is held on January 31 – February 1, or halfway between the winter solstice & the spring equinox. The holiday is a festival of the hearth, home, a celebration of the lengthening days & the early signs of spring.
The word "imbolc" means "in the belly" and refers to the pregnancy of ewes at this time of year. The term "oimelc" means ewe's milk. Around this time of year, many herd animals give birth to their first offspring of the year or are heavily pregnant & as a result, they are producing milk. This creation of life’s milk is a part of the symbolic hope for spring.
Imbolc is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and it is associated with important events in Irish mythology. It has been suggested that it was originally a pagan festival associated with the goddess Brigid and that it was Christianized as a festival of Saint Brigid, who herself is thought to be a Christianization of the goddess.
Some use Imbolc to celebrate the longer days which herald the return of Spring & The Goddess's recovery from giving birth to The Sun (The God) at Yule. The God & The Goddess are children symbolizing new life, new beginnings & new resurrections.
Related festivals:
• Groundhog Day-  Is a tradition observed in the United States & Canada on February 2 of every year. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day & sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den & winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.
While the tradition remains popular in the 21st century, studies have found no consistent association between a groundhog seeing its shadow & the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather.
•St. Brigid's Day- 1 February. It was originally Imbolc, the first day of spring in Irish tradition. Because Saint Brigid has been theorised as linked to the goddess Brigid, some associate the festival of Imbolc with the goddess. St. Brigid is the patroness saint (or 'mother saint') of Ireland. She is patroness of many things, including poetry, learning, healing, protection, blacksmithing, livestock & dairy production. In her honour, a perpetual fire was kept burning at Kildare for centuries.
A recent campaign successfully established her feast day as a national holiday in 2023.
• Chinese New Year- (February 10th) the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. In Chinese, the festival is commonly referred to as the Spring Festival,- marking the end of winter and the beginning of the spring season. Observances traditionally take place from Chinese New Year's Eve, the evening preceding the first day of the year, to the Lantern Festival, held on the 15th day of the year. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between January 21st & February 20th.
The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities as well as ancestors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the New Year vary widely & the evening preceding the New Year's Day is frequently regarded as an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner.
It is also a tradition for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill fortune & to make way for incoming good luck. Another custom is the decoration of windows & doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes among these paper-cuts and couplets include good fortune or happiness, wealth & longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers  & giving money in red envelopes.
•  Candlemas- is a Christian feast day on February 2nd commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. It is based upon the account of the presentation of Jesus in Luke 2:22-40.
While it is customary for Christians in some countries to remove their Christmas decorations on Twelfth Night, those in other Christian countries historically remove them after Candlemas. On Candlemas, many Christians also take their candles to their local church, where they are blessed and then used for the rest of the year.
•Setsubun- (February 3rd) Is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan. The name literally means 'seasonal division', referring to the day just before the first day of spring.
Both Setsubun & Risshun are celebrated yearly as part of the Spring Festival (Haru matsuri ) in Japan. In its association with the Lunar New Year, Setsubun, though not the official New Year, was thought of as similar in its ritual & cultural associations of 'cleansing' the previous year as the beginning of the new season of spring. Setsubun was accompanied by a number of rituals & traditions held at various levels to drive away the previous year's bad fortunes & evil spirits for the year to come.
Other Celebrations:
• Lupercalia-
In ancient Rome, this festival was conducted annually on February 13th through 15th under the superintendence of a corporation of priests called Luperci. The origins of the festival are obscure, although the likely derivation of its name from lupus (Latin: “wolf”) has variously suggested connection with an ancient deity who protected herds from wolves and with the legendary she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus. As a fertility rite, the festival is also associated with the god Faunus.
to purify the city, promoting health & fertility.
Each Lupercalia began with the sacrifice by the Luperci of goats and a dog, after which two of the Luperci were led to the altar, their foreheads were touched with a bloody knife & the blood was wiped off with wool dipped in milk; the ritual required that the two young men laugh. The sacrificial feast followed, after which the Luperci cut thongs from the skins of the sacrificial animals & ran in two bands around the Palatine hill, striking with the thongs at any woman who came near them. A blow from the thong was supposed to render a woman fertile.
In 494 CE the Christian church under Pope Gelasius I forbade participation in the festival. Tradition holds that he appropriated the form of the rite as the Feast of the Purification (Candlemas), celebrated on February 2, but it is likely that the Christian feast was established in the previous century. It has also been alternately suggested that Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, but the origin of that holiday was likely much later.

Updated Post. Imma be real for a sec, some of the new information that was brought to my attention is amazing and, in fact, very helpful, so I'm making an updated post to this one here.
A Beginners Guide to Crystals.
How to spot fakes (typically glass) and dyed crystals, Crystal Shapes, and Crystal Color Associations are the topics in this post.
How to spot glass, resin, and other types of fake crystals. (You can still 100% use them in witchcraft, but if you want genuine crystals, then this guide may help you do just that!)
If you think that your crystals are fake, here are some things you can look and do to tell.
Rubbing your crystal with a finger should reveal tiny pores on the surface of the crystal. If it does not have any pores and is instead completely smooth, then it's possible that it's glass or resin.
While some crystals can have naturally formed air bubbles in them, it is rare and may just be glass that was shaped into the crystal.
You can easily search up "fake crystal name" vs. "real crystal name" and compare the two pictures.
You can also look up "dyed crystals" vs. "undyed crystals" to see what a natural coloring of crystals should look like.
If you're worried that your turquoise is fake, then you can take the tip of a hot pin and press it into the crystal, if it burns then it's real, however if it starts to melt its a fake.
Opalite and Goldstone are glass crystals, man made.
9/10 times if your Crystal looks very brightly colored it could have been dyed.
I'll put in some pictures of glass/resin crystals next to the real crystals to show the difference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Natural coloring of crystals occurs because of the different metals and other minerals that are absorbed during the creation of the crystal. Quartz is just silica and oxygen, so it's appears colorless, but when iron is absorbed, it creates purple or yellow, depending on how oxidized the iron was in the creation of the crystal.
Tumblr media
Natural citrine does form, but it's not going to look burned or splochty.
Splotchy color in crystals usually means that it's been dyed, as you can see in the first two images. Dyed crystals also very obviously look dyed because of how brightly they are colored.
Tumblr media
Even in Malachite, the green in the fake malachite is brighter than the genuine malachite. You can also look at the unnatural banding on the fake and compare it to real malachite.
Tumblr media
Real opal is not see-through like Opalite is. Real opal is more clouded with spots of color, while opalite will have streaks of color or look like the see-through ones above.
Tumblr media
Real turquoise is going to have brown or black webbings and cracks or chips, while dyed howlite is going to be smooth with brown or black inclusions. You can take a swab of acetone and rub it across the crystal to see if any coloring comes off. If the color does come off or the crystal looks lighter in the spot, then it's more than likely dyed howlite. You can also do that hot pin trick mentioned above.
The picture on the left is dyed howlite, while on the right is the natural turquoise. You can see that the natural crystal has deep webbing into the stone, very obvious cracks while the holite doesn't have cracks, only webbing that looks like it but it's going to be smooth along those lines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crystal Shapes in witchcraft
Double pointed- absorbs and emits energy.
Cluster- Radiates energy.
One point- concentrates and directs energy.
Raw- Strong open energy.
If the crystal is more round then the energy is going to be calmer
If the crystal has multiple points, then the energy is directed off of each point.
The size of the crystal doesn't dictate the amount of energy it gives off.
Different crystals have different energies that they give off. The ones most commonly used in witchcraft and their properties are listed below.
Clear quartz- Clarity
Amethyst- Grounding
Citrine- Happiness
Rose quartz- love
Black Tourmaline- Protection
Obsidian- also protection
Aventurine- luck
Tigers eye- money
Labradorite- aura healing and protection
There are many other crystals that give off similar energies that can be used. As stated, these are just some of the more commonly seen ones.
Now, different crystals can give off different energies depending on the person using them. Some people may see use amethyst as protection rather than obsidian or black tourmaline. Some may use aventurine for money spells over tigers eye. That's 100% okay.
Crystal Color Associations.
Color associations can depend on how the witch feels about a color. This is the general association plus how I use colors in my path.
Red- Anger/passion
Orange- Courage (or in my case repulsion)
Yellow- Happiness
Green- Luck and money
Blue- Calming or sadness (depending on the mood)
Purple- Spirituality
Brown- grounding
Pink- self love
Grey- solemn, seriousness.
With some crystals, the color is also associated with the things listed above. However, again, not all witches will use the color associations of crystals this way, and that's 100% okay. Each witch has a different path and different associations when it comes to the tools they use in their path.
If you're interested in learning about what energies different crystals give off, often just googling "what is crystal name used for in healing" and you will receive an answer.
Though with any type of research, please look at 3-5 other sources that say the same or similar thing. Though it may take more digging to come to a conclusion.
Thank you for reading the updated post, and let me know if I missed anything or if you'd like to add anything. A big thanks to everyone who has corrected the previous post on this subject and any posts that may have contained misinformation in them.

Beautiful, black-eyed Nyx, cloaked in darkness, older than old, daughter of misty Chaos, mother of great and mighty spirits, I call to you. Ever-present one, you live in the shadows; we know you in the dusk, in the comfort of the night. Broad-winged Nyx, you clasp the hand of bright Hemera, each eve and morn, you greet her with love and sorrow for only in those moments may you embrace your child. Goddess, awesome one, in your realm are we all unblemished, in your realm do lovers’ promises ring true, in your realm are all things possible, if only until daybreak. Nyx, I honor you.
Small prayer
“Nyx, mother of the night, mother of sleep, mother of death: Might your darkness embrace me Might your energy caress me Might you be mine and Might I be yours Blessed be.“
In general
O ancient Goddess, born of Chaos and steeped in shadow, I honor you now and always. With eyes which have watched the beginnings of all that is, see us now embracing your sleep and mystery. With power that strikes fear into the hearts of the most revered of Gods,
I remember your strength when I am searching for my own. In the starless night where light shines not i will give my thanks to your Greatness, And surrender to the dark.

i feel like i’m gonna end up tweaking missa’s design at some point, and i might add some more shades of grey to tourmaline, but i’m fine with this for now lol
also pls imagine that tourmaline is like twice the size of phil 👍 also also this isn’t part of the gemcyt au so pls don’t tag it as that thnx

edit: yooo part 2 is out go look at it!!
royal gals from arc 1! i used this as a way to further illustrate and explore my fashion headcanons, and i love how these turned out. design notes under the cut!
CORAL: i wanted her to look deceptively kind and bubbly, so i tend to draw her big and round like a whale. two inspiration for her design are king dorephan from breath of the wild and granmamare from ponyo. i give her a big coral crown and pearl jewelry. she has a lot of teardrop shapes bc she's probably sad about a lot of things
GLACIER: my favorite queen <3 i wanted her to look regal and no-nonsense but kind. with the exception of her crown, most of her accessories are very sleek and minimalistic. and of course i had to give her glasses because i'm obsessed with giving dragons glasses. i can't decide if the spikes on that crown are opal or enchanted ice, but the studs are black tourmaline.
SCARLET: the og bad bitch!! i love designs that make her look like the world's scariest, swankiest peacock, and the animated wings design was a huge inspiration here. her face markings are meant to look like a helmet. the mail vest she's wearing here is more for show than protection, an ostentatious piece she wears around the palace rather than something she'd don in battle. this is generally the fit i imagine she would wear to court sessions and arena matches.
MOORHEN: i would love to know more about her tbh. i like the colors i gave her, i think the shades of brown work really well together. the cord around her neck represents her sibs, the knot having four coils to symbolize each of them. she has agate embeds all over her, with the majority on her horns, wings, and wrists/ankles. i imagine she has tattooed wing membranes as well.
GRANDEUR: i wanted to make her look regal and positively ancient, and i think i succeeded well enough. her frill shape vaguely matches glory's, as well as her affinity for orange and gold color accents. the flowers are based on tropical rhododenrons.
BATTLEWINNER: ooo she was fun. basically no opportunity for fashion, as i'm sure anything she'd try to wear would burn or melt in her lava bathtub, but i got to do some fun scarring on her. her snout is all scratched up, one of her horns broke off at some point (i imagine that happened during her throne challenge, and that nightwings spar with their horns like rams or deer. she probably got slammed into a wall or something) and her ears are all kinds of shredded. any water vapor around her face and neck tends to solidify into ice, building up into big sparkly icicles over time.

Mercury retrograde begins at 4° Virgo and ends at 21° Leo, traversing two distinct signs with unique energies. Virgo, known for its precision, analytical thinking, and focus on health, sets the stage for the retrograde’s beginning. As Mercury moves backward into Leo, the emphasis shifts to creativity, self-expression, and leadership.
The Astronomy Behind Mercury Retrograde
Astronomically, Mercury retrograde occurs when the planet appears to move backward in its orbit from our perspective on Earth. This optical illusion happens due to the differences in orbital speeds between Earth and Mercury. Since Mercury orbits the Sun much faster than Earth, it occasionally overtakes us, creating the retrograde effect.
During this time, Mercury is closer to Earth, and its gravitational influence is stronger. However, it’s essential to remember that the planet isn’t actually moving backward; it just appears to do so due to our vantage point. This phenomenon typically lasts about three weeks and happens three to four times a year.
Key Aspects and Influences
Mercury-Venus Conjunction (August 7): This alignment at 3° Virgo intensifies themes of love, beauty, and harmony. It encourages us to reassess relationships and personal values, potentially bringing past issues to the forefront for resolution.
Moon Transits: The Moon transits Virgo from August 5-8, amplifying the need for mental clarity and health focus. Later, as it moves through Gemini from August 25-28, it highlights communication and intellectual pursuits. These periods are ideal for grounding and introspection.
Impact on Zodiac Signs: Each sign will experience this retrograde uniquely. Virgos may feel heightened anxiety, needing to manage stress and details carefully. Leos might reassess personal goals and creative projects, focusing on refining their self-expression.
Astronomically, Mercury’s retrograde motion is an optical illusion caused by the relative positions of Earth and Mercury in their orbits around the Sun. This period is a fascinating time to observe the planet in the sky, appearing to move westward against the backdrop of stars.
During its retrograde phase, Mercury is best viewed just after sunset or before sunrise. Use this time to connect with the cosmos and deepen your understanding of planetary movements and their symbolic meanings.
Utilize the Moon in Virgo for rituals focused on health, well-being, and grounding. When the Moon is in Gemini, focus on communication and intellectual clarity. These phases are perfect for enhancing mental and emotional stability through magic.
Mercury retrograde can be a powerful time for introspection and magical work focused on reflection and realignment.
Perform rituals to release old patterns and recalibrate your energies.
Cleanse your space, and set intentions for clarity and purification. This is a powerful time for letting go of what no longer serves you and making room for new insights.
Create a sacred space to meditate and reflect on past actions, decisions, and relationships. Use crystals like amethyst or clear quartz to enhance clarity.
Shield yourself from potential negative influences by casting protection spells using black tourmaline or obsidian.
If old friends or lovers resurface, use this time to mend or release these connections. Light a blue candle (associated with communication) to facilitate open and honest dialogue.
Mercury retrograde is a potent time for divination practices such as tarot, astrology, and scrying.
Reflect on past issues and seek guidance on navigating current challenges. This period supports deep self-inquiry and uncovering hidden truths.
From a spiritual perspective, Mercury retrograde is a time for inner work and growth. It’s an opportunity to slow down, reassess, and realign with your higher purpose.
Practice mindfulness to stay grounded and centered. Meditation can help you maintain clarity and calm amid the chaos.
Document your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Reflecting on your entries can provide valuable insights and guidance.
Engage in energy healing practices like Reiki or crystal healing to balance and align your chakras.
Use positive affirmations to counteract any negative thoughts or fears that arise during this period. Affirm your ability to navigate challenges with ease and grace.
Practical Tips for Thriving During Mercury Retrograde
Be Flexible: Adaptability is key during Mercury retrograde. Have backup plans in place and be prepared for unexpected changes.
Double-Check Everything: Whether it’s an important email, a travel itinerary, or a contract, double-check all details to avoid errors.
Slow Down: Take your time with tasks and decisions. Rushing can lead to mistakes and misunderstandings.
Stay Grounded: Grounding practices like walking in nature, yoga, or deep breathing can help you stay centered and calm.
Mercury Retrograde may have a reputation for causing disruption, but it also offers a unique opportunity for reflection, realignment, and growth. You can navigate this period with confidence and ease. Embrace the introspective energy of Mercury retrograde, and use it as a time to pause, reflect, and prepare for the forward momentum that will follow.

What is Protection Magic? The How-To's and Methods
Tumblr media
Protection is necessary in the world we live in as it is just a fact of life. Did you know we need spiritual protection too? Whether it be protecting yourself from negative entities, negativity, curses or someone's bad vibes you need to be able to keep your peace and personal safety. Protection magic can either be offensive, defensive or both.
We touch on a form of protective magic called warding in another post, warding is a defensive type of protection magic. You can also do baneful wards. Those are an offensive and defensive type of magical protection.
Here are some other methods of protection that you can keep on your persons or place within the home.
Spiritual
Black Salt - Great for both protection, warding and banishing. Please be careful around pets with salt as they can get sick if eaten.
Water - Holy water, blessed waters and moon water can be used in rituals, baths or in sprays.
Incense - Dragons Blood, Rue, Sage, Rosemary, Mugwort, Frankincense, Blackberry Leaves, and Pine are all great to burn for protection. Can be made into herbal sprays.
Sprays - Herbal sprays can be made to be sprayed around the home and self for protection. Be cautious with pets.
Crystals - Black obsidian, Labradorite, Tigers Eye, Selenite, and Black Tourmaline can be carried or worn for protection
Sigils - Created with protective intent.
Witches Bells - Witches bells hang on your doorknob or on your door (inside the home) for protection and banishing. When someone comes into the home it rings, banishing negative energy.
Talisman - Objects with spiritual and historical meaning for protection. Can be worn or hung around the home.
Charms - Objects enchanted with the intention of protection. Can be worn or hung around the home.
Energetic Shielding and Armor - This is a form of warding but I'd like to place it here as well. Energy shielding and armour are very much like making protections and wards around your home, they're made with the energy you manifest within yourself or if you are someone who has low energy it can be borrowed from energy sources. I go into this more in my Warding post.
Physical
Veiling - Wearing a blessed head covering will protect you from other's personal energies. It can also help you stay in tune with your own energy without being overwhelmed by that around you.
Baths/Showers - Submerging yourself in water with protective herbs and oils. You can also shower with protective herbal soaps and hang a mesh satchel with protective herbs over your shower head.
Infused spell oils - Oils infused with protective herbs can be placed over the pulse points, third eye, feet and heart area.
Makeup/Skincare - Things like foundation, concealer, serums and moisturizer can all be used with the intention of protective barriers. Same with scented lotions, perfumes and leave-in conditioners. Makeup can even be colour correspondence with protection. Drawing a sigil for protection under your foundation may aid too. This is what’s considered glamour magic. Get creative with it!
Clothing - Wear protective coloured clothing like Black.
Vocal - Prayer to deity/ancestors/guides/etc for assistance. Prayer from a holy book.
Feel free to leave your methods below!
Blessings!

Appalachian Witchcraft for Beginners: Review
Tumblr media
This is: Appalachian Witchcraft for Beginners: The History, Remedies, and Spells of a Rich Folk Magic Tradition by Auburn Lily
Rating: 2/10
Pros: Some information presented is correct, like the information on “ingredients” isn’t too bad if not a super small amount of them, she mentioned red clay which a lot of books seem to forget exists. And this book’s aesthetics? 10/10 for the illustration work, colors, fonts! I also appreciated the insistence that you help the land as much as possible, as well as the land’s original inhabitants and to give Indigenous voices space.
Cons: There is so much I was so disappointed by. First off let’s get this out of the way: The author in her bio on her own website auburnlily.com claims she is a starseed. I have a LOT of personal feelings about the Starseed movement and how it damages the progress of mental health and getting help and medication for said mental disorders. But this should have been the first major red flag that this book would not be what it says on the cover.
A lot of my problems are as follows:
Most folk workers don’t use the same three or four ingredients…in this case:
Peppermint. Rose. Essential Oils. Crystals, usually citrine or black tourmaline.
Actually we tend to not use crystals at all unless we’ve adapted them into our practice ourselves…the old folk didn’t have pretty rocks to use they got at the New Age store in the town square, alright?
A LOT of this information is definitely tinged in a new age and modern light. The correspondences for the days of the week mentions “The Goddess” which we don’t…deal with??? At all??
Another example:
Grannies used to use the bible and ‘faith healing’ to avoid persecution from their community.
Absolutely not! She mentioned the witch trials a minimum of 6 times, which (ahaha good pun) almost made me roll my eyes into the back of my head, then I read the bible to avoid persecution part and almost burned the book on the spot.
Faith healing is NOT a cop out.
It was the way things WERE. Were there hexers? Yes. Were they given a wide berth sometimes? Also yes. But they also had their place in the community! The hexer in my family, Flossie, was respected with some fear, but she was also the person who scorned lovers and cheated on spouses went to. When the police were hounding moonshiners a few came to her for cop go away works.
The author also insinuates that Yarb Doctors were held in higher regard because they didn’t use faith/and or gender may have had a point in that. I dunno what yarb doctors and grannies she talked to but men were not allowed in the birthing room, that was a Granny’s responsibility and by god they did it well. You never backtalked a Granny, they were and are the backbones of their communities.
Now that I’m off that soapbox, the author also seems to believe that meditation, third eyes, astrology in a modern way, and crystals are critical for Appalachian witchcraft which is stupidly incorrect. Her recipe for floor wash is hogwash and far too simple and small, her candle color correspondences are laughable…especially that little line on Orange: “Helps with menstrual cramps.” If that was the case no straight woman in Tennessee would get cramps because they all wear orange at least once a week for their team.
She only uses Hoodoo like…3 times which is better than most authors so I supposed that’s progress? But the author also hates baneful work and makes mention of that fact numerous times.
The author also has quite a few love spells mentioned, and weirdly enough…a lot of her ingredients in OTHER spells are also the same ingredients in her love spells. How strange.
My final and most damning gripe, the author seems to believe that stereotypes make for amazing offerings to the ancestors. In particular…the Irish would appreciate offerings of potatoes. You have to be kidding me.
Overall: Yet another new age witch trying to make folk magic look far more complicated and fluffy than it is. I hated this so much. I didn't even touch the "Open the healing channel" and "Reparative Visualization" "SPELLS" she includes which sounds like absolute woowoo.
Proof of some of these claims are below:
