Anchor. 

Mia’s legs moved with an ease that was as natural as it was practiced. She’d trained for years to reach this speed, and she was proud of it. She was the anchor of the 4 x 4 and her team counted on her. The other school’s anchor was close behind her, so she pushed just a little harder, taking more of a lead. It made her feel better. She didn’t like leaving things up to chance. 

She cross the finish line, slowing down to a jog before she stopped and eventually leaned over, breathing. A smile played across her lips. She heard a cheer go up from the Cold Spring track team and looked over at them, grinning. Mia stood up more and started going over to them. She smoothed her blonde hair back into her ponytail, away from her face. 

Right out front was Cole Archer. Her first love. Her first kiss. Her first. He was tall, lanky, and devilishly handsome. As the quieter of the Archer twins, he was used to Blake getting all of the attention, but Mia knew how lucky she was to have Cole. And he was cheering more loudly than anyone. As she came back to the group, he wrapped her in a big sweaty hug. She didn’t care at all. This would turn into one of her favorite memories. The next meet would be state, and they were ready. 

Valedictorian.

All of the years of work had paid off. By normal standards, Mia had a 4.0, but if you counted the weight of all her AP classes, it was higher. It was a moment of pride to sit up front and receive the honor of valedictorian. All the same, she’d never considered herself a public speaker. She’d written a speech. It was okay. But her hands were still shaking. 

As she walked up to the podium, she didn’t look at her peers. She knew if she looked she’d be more scared, or worse, feel the lump in her throat that she’d been trying to keep at bay for weeks. Instead, she trained her eye on her younger brother in the stands. His name was Ian, but everyone just called him Anderson. 

Ian was on his phone, texting lord knows who. But when she was announced, he looked up and smiled a bit. They made eye contact for a second, and she felt a small amount of calm settle in her stomach.

“Hey seniors, I’m Mia Anderson, your valedictorian. It’s cliche, but I have to say... we did it!” She pushed a big smile and set her notes down on the podium. “The last four years with all of you have been an adventure and I am honored to be graduating alongside all of you...” 

She received polite applause at the end, with a few whoops from the track and cross country team people.  Her speech wasn’t particularly witty or clever, but it was heartfelt.

Kappa Alpha Theta. 

Brown wasn’t necessarily known for its sororities, but Mia was having a great time. She was on her fourth beer and was dancing in the living room of one of the frats. At this point, she didn’t remember which one. Her friend Emma danced with her, back to back. They moved their bodies together slowly, eventually turning around towards each other, getting close. 

A guy hollered in approval. Mia’s eyes roved over the crowd slowly until she found him. Tall and lanky, with dark eyes and a grin that stretched from ear to ear. She leaned in to Emma and whispered. “Got one, see you later!” 

She laughed at the groan the spread through the crowd as she pulled away from Emma, but soon another two girls had come to join her. No one would miss Mia from this. She wove through the crowd and found the guy who yelled. 

“Hey,” she called to him once she was close. “You think I’m cute?”

The guy smirked. “I don’t know. Do you think I’m cute?” he asked.

Mia shrugged. “I did, but I don’t know anymore. I don’t like insecure guys.” 

“How’s this for secure?” he grinned and pulled her in, kissing her hard. 

Mia wrapped her arms around his neck and jumped up, wrapping her legs around him too. 

Runaway. 

The bus doors closed and Mia seized up for a second. Her backpack felt heavier all of the sudden, almost like the weight of the world. She’d graduated from Brown and was slated to start law school in 3 weeks. Mere days ago, she completely panicked and planned her getaway.

She left behind her apartment, still filled with most of her things, prepaid for the next several months by her parents. She left behind her roommate, her best friend, Natalie, who she’d left a basic note for. She left behind John, Johnny to his friends: her boyfriend. 

He was perfect by any normal standards. Handsome and smart, he was already working on his MBA and was looking at jobs on Wall Street. He would make serious money and provide for her. He was calm, stable, and nice. He was everything he was supposed to be. And it felt so incredibly stifling. 

All she wanted was a mountain and the woods and the water and someone to go there with her. Johnny didn’t like outdoor activities, minus drinking beers on his friend’s yacht and skiing in the winter. 

It was all weighing on her, and she needed to get out. So she got out. The Blackstone River was calling her name. She just needed to do a bit of walking. 

Rebel. 

They were mad. Red in the face mad. Shaking mad. 

“How could you? Did you have any idea how worried we were? Did you think of us at all? Why on earth would you just disappear? You have everything perfectly set up for you!” 

“Mia, I don’t understand. You’ve always been such a good kid.”

These last words seemed to explain everything. Good kid. Sports. Grades. The school. The sorority. The future employment. The boyfriend. The fiance? After she got back, Johnny had proposed. He never wanted her to leave him again. He’d seemed so impassioned at the time, so she said yes, but two days later, it was back to the status quo. 

She cast her eyes down, away from her parents. How could you say that the perfect life was boring and predictable and suffocating? “I just needed space,” was all she could come up with. 

Craig Anderson, her father, frowned at her, then looked at his wife, Molly. “That explains nothing. This is insane. I expect this will never happen again.”

“It wont.”

Molly sighed and came to her daughter, putting her arm around Mia. “Honey, we want you to be happy. You have such a good life. Don’t risk it by running away.”

Mia couldn’t look them in the eyes, but she nodded. “I won’t, but Johnny... he’s just, I think we need to break up.” 

Craig simply frowned more deeply. “Johnny is a great man. He will have a good job and support you and provide for you. And he will be a loyal and proper husband for you. You need grounding. He will ground you. Opposites attract and all that.” 

She felt her mother squeeze her shoulder. “You already said yes, baby. He will be good to you.” Molly kissed the side of Mia’s head. “It’s the smart choice for you.”

Mia felt her stomach drop to her feet.

Trophy wife. 

“I get that you got the law degree. It looks awesome. It will be great for volunteering. Why are you applying to be a public defender?” Johnny’s nose wrinkled. “You don’t even need to work! I make enough for both of us.”

Mia took a breath and looked at her husband. “I want to do good in the world. I want to help people who may be wrongfully accused or can’t afford to defend themselves.” 

He tilted his head. “Aren’t they usually the bad guys? And the pay is shit.”

“It’s not about the money, Johnny...” she trailed off, but her voice was getting quieter. 

Johnny sighed dramatically. “I’ve told you, it’s John now. Just John. Johnny sounds like a little boy.” He appraised his wife slowly. “Let’s make a deal. We move to Cold Spring to be closer to your parents. You can do your law whatever for awhile until we’re ready to start a family.” 

Her eyes widened slightly. “As in kids?”

“Yeah, obviously. Why do you think your parents want us to be closer to them? They want to help with the kids,” Johnny shrugged. 

Mia was speechless. What options did she have?

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders will launch physically and digitally for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in North America on May 23, publisher Gaijinworks confirmed to Gematsu. The game is aiming for a simultaneous digital-only release in South America and Europe, but notes that if it doesn’t appear on the PlayStation Store on May 23, then it will appear “very soon after.”

The PlayStation 4 physical version will ship in Raj, Amu, and Ist Editions. Each edition has a different character artwork on the disc and on the back of the box. The PS Vita physical version will not ship in multiple editions.

Summon Night 6: Lost Borders weaves an emotional tale of friendship and discovery that begins in the sparsely populated “cocoon world” of Fillujah, where the three main characters (Raj, Amu and Ist) live in virtual isolation. Each has a single companion, a flying sidekick with an amazing special power, and they are all surprised when dozens of strangers begin to suddenly appear-literally falling out of the clear, blue sky.

Lost Borders can be played and enjoyed without any knowledge of the previous games in the series, but fans will recognize that the mysterious strangers are actually returning characters from all of the mainline Summon Night games. Originally released in Japan as a celebration of the award-winning series’ 15th anniversary, Summon Night 6: Lost Borders offers gorgeous widescreen graphics presented in high definition, a first for the series.

The fully 3-D battle system allows Chain Attacks that happen automatically when an enemy is surrounded by two or more allies; in these situations, each ally can hit the enemy without risk of counterattack. In addition to the Summons that are a hallmark of the series, two allies can team up for a breathtaking “Summon Burst” attack that invokes a devastating magical strike from one of many giant fantastical creatures. Combat is only one part of the Summon Night 6 experience.

The series is well known for its “night conversations”-one-on-one encounters where various characters confide in one another, leading to a web of elaborate, emotional storytelling with many different branching paths. Lost Borders also includes several charming mini-games: One has you fishing for different types of aquatic creatures, while another involves cooking power-up meals using the bounty you’ve caught with your fishing pole.

A fourth packaging variant is being produced exclusively for the Wonderful Edition box set that was only available by pre-orders placed prior to December 2016.

The initial print run of Summon Night 6 physical copies will include a special voucher that can be mailed in (along with a $3.95 shipping / handling fee) to obtian a free copie of the game’s original soundtrack on CD, which is normally $29.99. The CD includes all of the music from the game and comes with a case and full-color disc art, both of which are different from the soundtrack CD included with the Wonderful Edition box set.

Another opinionated jerk makes a top ten movies of 2016 list!

Hey everybody and welcome back to my often neglected blog. It’s been even more neglected this year due to me finally figuring out how to use Instagram. This has been a really, really, really good year for movies. Don’t let the haters bring you down, there was a lot of good stuff this year. For the first time in a long time my list isn’t heavily populated with independent genre work (although I always argue all film is genre). 

My one cravat as always is that I include festival films that might not have opened wide. This year it’s only one film I think.

Anyways without further adieu:

TOP TEN FILMS OF 2016

1. CHRISTINE

written by Craig Shilowich; directed by Antonio Campos; staring Rebecca Hall, Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts

This film stuck with me long after watching it. Even now I can’t really get it out of my head. Not to be confused with Kate Plays Christine which also examines the story of television journalist Christine Chubbuck who famously, or rather infamously, committed suicide live on air in 1974. This film is not an entirely joyless watch, and it’s care and craft with the tragic story is stunning.

Rebecca Hall (who I’d somehow never seen in anything before) gives a performance that is so nuanced that you completely understand the depression that hangs over her, and makes her suicide less of shocking event and more of a soft sad gradual ending. 

2. NEON DEMON

written by Mary Laws, Polly Stenham, Nicholas Winding Refn; directed by Nicholas Winding Refn; staring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Bella Heathcote

Haters are gonna hate. That’s the best way to describe the critical reaction to this movie. I don’t want all my thoughts to be about the reaction the film had at Cannes and afterwards but it definitely defined the conversation around this film. 

Hopefully with time an audience will find the film and appreciate it for what it is: pure style and attitude. It’s a punk rock middle finger to the male gaze. 

3. COLOSSAL

written & directed by Nacho Vigalondo; staring Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikius, Tim Blake Nelson, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell

The single most original film I’ve seen this year. It’s a film about addiction and the effect it has on giant monsters destroying South Korea. I’m not saying anything else because that would ruin the sheer joy of watching this film.

4. HELL OR HIGH WATER

written by Taylor Sheridan; directed by David MacKenzie; staring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, Gil Birmingham

Truly the first great modern-time western since Vanishing Point in the 70s. I’d argue it’s even a better western than No Country For Old Men. One of probably the best portraits of the current American financial landscape, it tells the tale of two brothers (Pine & Foster) who take to robbing banks in order to pay of the mortgage on their late mother’s farmland, while being pursued by two Texas Ranges (Bridges & Birmingham). 

The scene that sums up terrible situation that the brothers find themselves in is when they attempt to take a bank only to find that it has been shut down due to lack of business. 

It could be read as a metaphor for the current financial wasteland that millennials (Pine & Foster) have been born into and the omnipresent crush of the baby boomers and generation x (Bridges & Birmingham) that is damaging the economy beyond repair. And it has shootouts and car chases!

5. LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP

adapted & directed by Whit Stillman; staring Kate Beckinsale, Chloe Sevigny, Morfydd Clark, Xavier Samuel, Stephen Fry

Whit Stillman always took great inspiration from Jane Austen’s work. Much of his loose comedy of manners trilogy (Metropolitan, Barcelona, Last Days of Disco) would fit right alongside Pride and Prejudice or Emma and would be far more accessible to modern audiences.

This is probably the best (in my opinion only) adaptation of Austen’s work. It’s (as far as I know) the only adaptation of her short novel “Lady Susan.” Beckinsale plays the titular Lady Susan who flirts, gossips, backstabs, and snarks her way through Britain attempting to secure financial security for herself   (and possibly her daughter if by accident). 

Don’t let the period pedigree fool you: this is a hilarious comedy first and foremost. It succeeds where nearly all other Austen adaptations fail because Stillman embraces the terrible way the characters treat each other and minimizes the too-precious romance that sinks most other adaptations of her work. 

6. BLAIR WITCH

written by Simon Barrett; directed by Adam Wingard; staring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Corbin Reid, Wes Robinson, Valorie Curry

At some point it became trendy to crap on any film that was a long late sequel. Especially a sequel to a cultural juggernaut like The Blair Witch Project. A lot of people wrote this film off as a warmed over retread of the original. To be honest I’m sure most of those people didn’t actually see the movie. Or if they did they went in with mind made up and refused to admit that this movie is pretty damned good. And very damned scary.

I caught it at Midnight Madness at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Only the hardest of the hardcore go to those screenings and the place was terrified. 

The team behind the ludicrously awesome films “You’re Next” and “The Guest” (Barrett & Wingard) made a balls-to-the-wall horror show with their Blair Witch. The audience will feel totally beaten up by the end of this movie and leave questing their safety in society.

7. THE NICE GUYS

written by Anthony Bagarozzi & Shane Black; directed by Shane Black; staring Ryan Gosling, Russel Crowe, Angourie Rice

It’s Shane Black doing a gumshoe hardboiled detective story set in grimy 1970s Los Angeles set during Christmas. If I need to say more: you guys are jerks.

8. THE WITCH

written & directed by Robert Eggers; staring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, Lucas Dawson

The genius of this movie is that there are no real twists in it; yet it’s wholly (holy?) satisfying. A family of devout Christians are exiled and isolated, and are driven to distrustful paranoia when a coven of witches and the most evilest goat ever to grace the screen target them. A satanic bunny kills a dog and a woman mistakes a crow for her infant son. It’s got everything!

Haunting, horrifying, and beautiful this film is so captivating that it was equally praised by theologians and satanists. It’s mystifying and mysterious in how good of a film it is.

9. LA LA LAND

written & directed by Damien Chazelle; staring Ryga Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend

Haters are gonna hate, but this movie is simply great. 

A musical that finally breaks free of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice/jukebox musical crappola that we’ve had to deal with since the 70s. You don’t walk away remembering any songs, because the film never comes to a stop to say “here’s a song!”

 The music actually is integral to the emotion and character of the story. And it’s quite good too. And maybe now I kinda like jazz?

10. HUSH

written by Kate Siegel & Mike Flanagan; directed by Mike Flanagan; staring Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Samantha Sloyan, Michael Trucco

Make no bones about it: this is a mean movie. It’s got one of the most clever concepts I’ve ever seen: how would a deaf mute woman defend herself against a home invader?

It’s gripping and tense and you just want the lead character of Maddie (Kate Siegel) to survive and defeat her assailant (John Gallagher Jr.). The movie is essentially just the two of them trying to outsmart one another while both deal with Maddie’s handicap.

It’s just scary enough while never crossing over into the hardcore horror territory the would alienate mainstream audiences.

Being a lifelong lover of DC, I am excited with every new movie we get. Zachary Levi is one of my favorite actors and I can't wait to see him playing this hero.

The end result of 11 years of storytelling. This is beyond amazing that this series has made it to this level.
