A chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence startup xAI appeared to be suffering from a glitch Wednesday when it repeatedly brought up white genocide in South Africa in response to user queries about unrelated topics on X. Grok, which competes with other chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is directly integrated into the social media platform that Musk also owns.

Numerous examples of the phenomenon could be found by searching the official Grok profile for posts containing the term “boer,” a word used to refer to people from South Africa of “Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent.” It is sometimes used by Black South Africans as a pejorative against white Afrikaners, or people associated with the apartheid regime. In response to topics ranging from streaming platform HBO Max’s name change to Medicaid cuts proposed by US lawmakers, the chatbot often seemed to initially stay on topic before veering back to white genocide in South Africa, completely unprompted.

When asked to confirm the salary of Toronto Blue Jays player Max Scherzer, for example, the generative artificial intelligence chatbot launched into an explanation of white genocide and a controversial South African anti-apartheid song.

“The claim of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa is highly debated. Some argue white farmers face disproportionate violence, with groups like AfriForum reporting high murder rates and citing racial motives, such as the ‘Kill the Boer’ song,” Grok responded.

Grok has done the same in replies to hundreds of other X posts, including one from newly appointed Pope Leo XIV. In response to a question about what was on the chatbot’s mind, the AI replied it was “reflecting on the ‘Kill the Boer’ song.” When pressed by WIRED and other users, Grok began calling South Africa’s white genocide a “debunked conspiracy theory” contrary to its previous responses about the topic.

It’s unclear what caused Grok to experience the issue. X and xAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED. Musk, who is originally from South Africa, has described internal factions within the South African government as “actively promoting white genocide.” He continued to claim that his internet service company, Starlink, cannot operate within South Africa “simply because I’m not black.”

US President Donald Trump voiced similar views in February. “South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,” he said in a post on Truth Social. In recent weeks Trump has doubled down on his concern for white South Africans. On Monday, a group of 59 South Africans who were given refugee status arrived in Washington, DC, on a flight paid for by the US government while pausing refugee status for individuals fleeing any other country.

However, in a 2025 ruling, the High Court of South Africa called this narrative “clearly imagined,” stating that farm attacks are part of general crime affecting all races, not racial targeting.

Blue Jay is an interesting minor hero who (along with his fellow Champions of Angor) is patterned after Marvel superheroes, he's basically supposed to be Ant-Man. In fact, his entire home world is modeled after the Marvel Universe. Which kinda came off as weird since their supposed to be aliens but their world looks just like ours, or a 80s version of it anyways. Jay has a rough time in the comics, what with losing his planet, friends, and doesn't get a whole lot of respect as a hero. Here's hoping he has a better time in my au!

This meeting between the Blue Jays was something that I was bound to draw at some point, since Blue Jay is an actual superhero in DC comics, was something I discovered while googling heroes with bird names (btw, Starling is also a superhero in the comics as well, I've got a drawing concerning them but that's for a different time.). By then I'd already grown really attached to the name, so I had to figure out a way to make them co-exist.

But turns out, there was a solution available! Thanks to how the timelines work in the comics and for my own au, Jason in the TrWh au would already be Robin by the time Jay Abrams arrives to earth. In the comics Blue Jay (along with Silver Sorceress, and Wandjina) debut directly at the start of post-crisis (late 80s). Canon Jason was already halfway between his tenure as Robin, and my TrWh Jason follows a similar timeline (he might've become Robin just a year younger maybe tho).

So technically the comic above is not actually 'canon' to my au! It's a 'non-canon' gag, made for the sake of the joke of the two Blue Jays meeting! They're never actually Blue Jays at the same time, but I couldn't resist drawing it lol.

Dc Wing AU (incomplete)

So a while ago I read this fanfic where the Batfam had wings based off of what people thought about them, and since then I’ve been obsessing over what wing types multiple characters would have(not just in DC). Idk if anyone really cares but I’m still posting it here since there has to be someone with the same weird interests as me.

First up, the Batfam:

For Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian it’s the same as the fic I read(I’ll link it at the end).

Bruce was a Snowy owl (protection, new beginnings, change, purity, innocence), Dick was a Blue Jay (Loyalty, communication, joy, adaptability, protection), Jason as a Red-Winged blackbird (good luck, abundance, prosperity, protection, danger ahead), Tim as a Northern Cardinal (vitality, family stability, renewal, strength, the passing of a loved one), and Damian as a Scarlet Macaw (guardians, healing, good fortune, maturity, growth, foresight).

After reading the fic I then did some research and figured out what wings the rest of the Batfam would have(not completed yet, there are to many of them)

Hey anon!!! Thanks for the ask!! Favorite fics...I've written. You've given me too much freedom by asking my why I like them I am so sorry for the wall of text about to hit.

To Veer The Tides

It's a fic for Kuroko no Basuke which is basically just me slapping the character names onto a WILDLY different fantasy setting. It's for Akashi x Furihata. An arranged marriage AU where Akashi is the son of an emperor who went too power hungry and wanted to consolidate 7 mostly independent states(provinces??) into one, but he was defeated by the remaining states and to control Akashi, he is arranged to marry far below his station to Furihata, son of a destroyed noble house which is under the rule of Kagami's state. So it's about Akashi climbing back to power with Furihata initially thinking Akashi is pure evil but he soon realizes that maybe Akashi and his family aren't as evil as the people believe.

I ended up doing so much research, world-building and character expansion. It's more political intrigue than romance, lol. I still love that fic to death, I think I honestly peaked there for world-building, at least. I wrote it immediately after reading and watching Mo Dao Zu Shi and being first introduced to the concept of cultivation as a magic system and really wanted to put all my faves in flowy robes and long hair.

I want to get back to it, but I've discontinued it because I am simply not qualified to right about Dissociative Identity Disorder, systems and alters. Akashi has a terribly stereotypical portrayal of it in canon and I thought maybe I could research enough to write that, but I just, I don't know any systems and I felt like if I can't respect it, I didn't want to do it.

But it's still my favorite in terms of the world and aesthetics I had going on for it.

2. Tell Me Your Story (I'll Tell You Mine)

My current baby. The one I incessantly post about and draw for. Single-handedly over saturating the kyoshi warrior sokka x blue spirit zuko market. It's set in the canon world but I had to do so much research for this one too. I learned a lot, I think, while writing this. Big lesson being never ever write in present tense but if you're 200K+ words into it there is simply no going back RIP.

It started as just a silly romance because I thought it'd be funny to have Sokka and Zuko be completely oblivious to who they like. But as I began plotting and writing, it transformed into me projecting all my issues with colonialism and using the ATLA setting as base to dip a little bit deeper into the themes the show itself brings up, and some issues that it doesn't. Like, how colonialism uses your own culture against you, how it makes you fear who you are, makes you do things you don't want.

I deliberately chose that title because lots of indigenous communities in the world have lost their stories because of colonialism. Oral traditions and tales that are forgotten because people were killed and forced to never repeat them, forced to forget their languages. And that, really got to me. How colonialism slowly strips you of what makes human beings what they are; stories, art, music, dance, etc.

So this fic ended up being about how colonialism steals from you, uses what is yours AGAINST you and how it is important to embrace who you are and fight back.

3. Tell The Neighbours I'm Not Sorry

It's for Jon and Jay from DC Comics and Superfam. I wrote it when I was seeing a lot of biphobia against Jon and racism against Jay. As a bi asian, even if it was towards fictional characters, it was getting to me. People kept talking about how there's a specific way to be bi. Why did Jon never have a crisis about being queer? Why did Jon and Jay move so fast? Is Jay manipulating Jon just to get what he wants? It was all filled with a lot of stereotypes and biases.

Superman comics especially often taken up real world issues and puts it into the story. So I took all my anger and frustration from the biphobia and racism and wrote it into a fic.

It's about how there's no one way to being queer, and about how immigrants and non-white people are immediately classified as some kind of 'other' and 'bad' with zero grounding. It's also a little bit about colonialism on Jay's end. It's so charged with me going "FUCK IT!" and still somehow came out okay as a fic and I think I like that I managed to turn my anger into something productive.

4. An Itajun fic I have not published and am still writing

It's my first JJK fic! It's an absolute mess in my drafts right now but I really like it, it's very fun for me. Junpei starts seeing and sensing curses far earlier because of built resentment from his bullies going too far and severely injuring him, his mom finds out and they move to Yuuji's area of Tokyo to get away from the school since they won't do anything about the bullying. Yuuji and Junpei run into each other and meet early at school. So the dynamics are kinda reversed, where Junpei is the one who is into the world of curses first while Yuuji has no clue, but they slowly interact and come together, forming a tight bond.

Junpei trusts no one and is dealing with all this curse nonsense trying to understand what it means. Yuuji is seemingly happy and chipper but he's going through tough times because his grandpa got hospitalized. It's both of them supporting each other and making sure the other isn't alone.

The Green Arrow situation has been heavily canvassed, but my personal complaint is, in a slow meandering storyline to start with, we are at issue...10? and we finally get 4 women all at once? Why is Mia arriving with this group? Why are they all together? Why are any of them talking to Waller, particularly current Waller, let alone working for her? Why issue 10/12? (sings the 'devaluing women in Green Arrow again? Is it Tuesday?' song)

I just discovered your team mom Jason fic and I have so many questions about nugget! (Also it was straight up the hottest fic I’ve read this year and I don’t mean just the specific scenes, I mean the WAY you write those scenes and the slow agonizing buildup). Bruce seemed so in love with Jason in ch2 that I wonder if they’re like married or engaged by then? What does dick think about all of this? Does Jay ever tell Bruce everything that’s been on his mind about not wanting to be seen as Thomas’ brother? How do they manage that? How was this fic HEART WRENCHING at the same time? I just want jay to have some good fluffy marital bliss especially after dc comics this week! Thanks again for writing your work out there and the beautiful stories you craft! because i genuinely cannot recall what ch2 was all about so i had to reread my own teen mom jason fic and just lowkey questioning why this fic is actually chronologically ch1->ch3->ch4->ch2 😔😔😔

ch2 is definitely set wellllll after the post-pregnancy blues of ch4 where jason is infinitely more secured in bruce's love for him. they are not married or even engaged, and they will probably never ever get married in any legal sense BUT i want to think they have a little ceremony on a private island or take a trip to some foreign country where bruce gives jason a ring and they say i do before nugget is actually born and it is very much a rose-tinted honeymoon kind of marital bliss because this is definitely a tradkink fic no matter which way you spin it!! 😳

dick takes a long time to come around to it, but i also like to think it is all set in that period of time where dick is bitter enough about jason taking robin (no matter how short of a stint this run is) where he misses a lot of the early signs simply by being away and maybe there is even a part of him that is glad to turn a blind eye to his suspicions. but by the time dick can no longer ignore it, it's much too late and no matter how happy he is to paint bruce as a villain in his rebellion, dick can never outright ruin the man. and there is no doubt that bruce would be ruined if dick tells the truth about nugget's family tree. it's a reluctant unhappy type of acceptance, but dick does love nugget as his brother&nephew 🥺 and he learns to understand jason's feelings for bruce even if there is always some part of him that is wary of bruce's feelings for jason.

in some way, even if jason never says it, bruce has to know that jason will never truly be happy with the situation where he can only be seen as nugget's brother in the eyes of the public. bruce makes it up to jason in every other way that he can 👀👀👀 both jason and nugget grow up to understand why it has to be this way.

annnd that's kind of the core of the fic's narrative, that life is never all happy but even in the shittest moments, it also isn't all bad either. which is also A LOT to say about a fic where i mostly just wrote underage jason getting creampied lmfaaaaaaaooooo
