I just started working at a bookstore yesterday and the highlight of my day was an older man returning Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and being very disdainful about them as stories. Like yes, I hate them too.

SHATTER ME TRILOGY REVIEW-
2/5 stars…
Almost every review of this series that I have seen raves about how amazing it is. I have to disagree. For some context, here is the plot summary of book one:
“Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.”
A plot summary for books 2 and 3 really isn’t needed since the storyline is so hopelessly redundant one can barely distinguish each book from the other. Essentially, the main character Juliette is rescued from her prison by the ruggedly handsome Adam Kent. They are taken to a District 13-esque underground base by the comedic relief character, Kenji. A resistance movement against an evil government whose motives are never clearly defined is introduced, a love triangle is formed between Juliette, sexy Adam and bad guy turned good sexy Aaron (who- plot twist- is Adam's long lost brother) , our main character discovers that she’s a super powerful girl boss, she takes down the government, becomes the government….yaddah yaddah yaddah.
My main issue with this book isn’t necessarily the plot. The concept of a person who can’t touch others without killing them is intriguing. The two sexy male characters that are conveniently the only people who can touch her without dying from her powers are obnoxious, but what can we expect from a dystopian YA novel? The thing is, a lot of the issues with this book are issues typically associated with YA novels, and in most books, they can be overlooked. BUT THIS BOOK HAS SOME OF THE WORST WRITING I HAVE EVER READ IN MY LIFE.
The chapters (which vary in length, sometimes 1, 2, 3, or 15 pages long) are fraught with sad attempts at profound metaphors. Allow me to provide you with a few examples:
“Raindrops are my only reminder that clouds have a heartbeat. That I have one, too.”
I've never heard about clouds with a heartbeat, but whatever makes you happy I guess.
“I only know now that the scientists are wrong.
The world is flat.
I know because I was tossed right off the edge and I've been trying to hold on for 17 years. I've been trying to climb back up for 17 years but it's nearly impossible to beat gravity when no one is willing to give you a hand.”
I think we can all agree that this metaphor could've been made without the declaration that the world is flat, but that line will definitely cause the reader to do a double take!
“I am nothing but novocaine. I am numb, a world of nothing, all feeling and emotion gone forever.  I am a whisper that never was.”
.....this speaks for itself. or maybe it doesn't speak, since it's novocaine.
“Every butterfly in the world has migrated to my stomach.”
this imagery both disturbs and confuses me
"My eyes are 2 professional pickpockets, stealing everything to store away in my mind."
quick writing lesson: when a number is less than ten, you write it out in word form!! also what. just what.
"They want to delete every point of punctuation in my life from this earth."
“And we are quotation marks, inverted and upside down, clinging to one another at the end of this life sentence. Trapped by lives we did not choose.”
punctuation metaphors are really a theme here. quite possibly the only theme of this series.
"My mouth is sitting on my kneecaps."
"My jaw is dangling from my shoelace."
"My eyelashes trip into my eyebrows; my jaw drops into my lap."
There are so many other normal ways to just say she was surprised! I simply cannot understand the thought process behind these absurd sentences.
"My stomach is a flimsy crepe, my heart is a raging woodpecker, my blood is a river of anxiety."
"I crumble to the floor, folding into myself like a flimsy crepe."
The fact that a crepe metaphor was used at all, let alone twice in one book, is completely bizarre.
[…]his lips his lips his lips are 2 pieces of frustration forged together.”
This pattern of crossing out and repeating phrases is repeated several times throughout each chapter, and it is sooooo irritating.
To conclude, this book series gave me the same vibes as most soap operas: terrible quality, the plot is filled with intrusive twists that make no logical sense, and the characters have about as much depth as a puddle.
I will admit that I was entertained by this series, hence the two stars instead of one. But I was entertained in the same way a train wreck might be entertaining. This series is so bad it's hilarious. The fact that someone wrote this, reread it, thought it was decent, an editor read this, also thought it was decent, and then had it published is so strange to me.
If you are the type of reader who enjoys plots that aren't thought out whatsoever, if you can stomach the cringiest of writing phrases, if you are okay with the most muddled and rushed endings ever, and if you enjoy the most cliche events possible , you may be able to enjoy this series. Or maybe you can enjoy it while seeing it for the ridiculousness it is. However, if you read this and think that you have walked away with some profound and thought provoking quotes like a majority of people on the internet seem to think, please reevaluate. Expand your reading horizons. Try some classic literature. Or something.
anyways this is not as harsh as it sounds, please don't be offended if you are a huge fan, just my opinion. :)

So I finished reading Piranesi yesterday and it was SO unsatisfying. I was really really enjoying the book throughout most of it and the writing style was lovely, but the ending was kinda anticlimactic, and it ruined the whole experience for me tbh. Feels like I wasted my entire weekend :/
Also content warning to any queer people thinking of reading it: it's lowkey really homophobic

The only book ending worse than the HP epilogue is the ending of the Shadow and Bone trilogy and I will die on this hill. Ruin and Rising is one of the worst things I have ever read.
It completely rips apart everything interesting in that series to shoehorn in a romance with a more sexist and insecure Gale from THG. It also has this really lovelu theme of "you are only lovable if you are small and helpless" and "you cannot have power and this boy you want".
Also the guy doesn't even love her until the Darkling does and even then he doesn't like her when she has powers and only likes her when she is powerless and struggling and reliant on him.
Hmmmmmmmm.

I could think of no better way to share the news than this!
So when I was 17, my cat went missing and I'd given up hope of ever seeing him again.
Until on Monday, 27th of May, 2024, my friend sent me a FB post asking 'isn't that your mother?' about the person named on the microchip.
Tumblr media
Here he is! 16 years old, and found safe, twelve whole years after he went missing!
Yesterday (Tuesday the 28th of May, 2024) I went to the rescue that had him, and I reclaimed my boy, renaming him Artie! (He'd originally been called 'Cat' because my mother and I couldn't decide on a name)
He's home safe with me now, currently inhabiting my bathroom and purring up a storm every time someone goes in there!
I'll be doing slow introductions between him and my current cat to give them the best possible chance of living in harmony!
Here's some pictures of Artie once we let him out of the carrier:

"(blank) hates laios!" WRONG WRONG WRONG. SHUT THE FUCK UP
Tumblr media
shuro is just as awkward as laios and it is made So clear he considers him a friend and likes him. he defends him when the canaries start talking shit and actively readies himself to physically fight them so they dont get to him.
Tumblr media
namari also likes laios. she respects him as a leader and also defends him and readies to fight the canaries.
Tumblr media
ive not actually seen anyone claim izutsumi hates laios, but a lot of ppl Are weird abt them. izutsumi and laios' relationship was rocky at the beginning. he struggled to figure out how to interact with her. but by the end, she actively seeks him out to talk with during the lead up to the feast. she hides behind him when falin wakes up. she has already realized shecan do what she wants and does not need to stick around, yet she does. she sleeps near him on the windowsill, waiting with him and marcille for falin to wake up. she has accepted him as part of her life and wants to keep him in it.
Tumblr media
marcille does not hate laios. let me say this again.
Marcille Donato Does Not Hate Laios Touden.
Tumblr media
marcille Loves him. in a platonic, familial sense. laios returns this just as readily. she yells at him. she whacks him. she tells him whats on her mind. she uses healing magic to ease his pain during the parasite fiasco. she reattaches his leg when he loses it. she teaches him magic. she lays her head on his corpse and cries before reviving him. she launches herself at him two times, when the canaries interrogate them and when he talks her down in the tower. he is a comforting presence to her. she trusts him, she cares about him, she worries about him, she imagines him as a big fluffy dog that loves and protects her. laios is her rock when falin is taken from them time and time again. and she tries to be his as well. she whole-heartedly, unconditionally, loves and trusts laios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
chilchuck does not hate laios. laios pays him his rates, no questions asked. laios trusts and respects chilchuck's job as a lockpick. laios does not see him as a child (at least, i cant think of an instance where he does so). chilchuck states, outright, he sees him as a friend and doesnt want to see him hurt. he actively worries about him as the falin situation gets worse. chilchuck respects laios. he shows almost 0 hesitation in helping get falin back, nor eating her by the end. he does not think of leaving him once, until he realizes he could lose him. chilchuck is cowardly with emotions and prefers to bottle things, so his first instinct was to bolt. he was angry because he was scared of watching someone he cares about destroy himself. laios is his Friend.
Tumblr media
and holy shit. holy Fucking shit. kabru DOES NOT hate laios. kabru has the rockiest start known to man with him, and he Still helps him by occupying the canaries. he warns him about them. he hides the black magic from them just as shuro does. his whole Thing is trusting laios despite himself. kabru has his own baggage regarding other people, just like laios, yet he tries so hard to believe and trust this man. he Wants to. kabru is not very hopeful, but laios makes him Want to be. he states like 3 times he wants to be close to him and sees him as a friend. he stays through the entire feast!! the man who hates monsters, whose biggest trigger is monsters, actively, consciously, Willingly stayed through the entire monster meat feast. all to help his friend get his sister back. he could've left!! the feast was like an entire week!! yet he was there for every single day. he was one of the closest people to the door when falin awoke!! after reuniting with her brother, her friends, the people who knew her the most (plus senshi and izutsumi), the first person she greets is kabru!! he wants to be close to laios, he likes laios, laios is his friend and he cares for him, he wants to meet his sister!!! kabru fucking stays on the island with him as one of his closest, most trusted advisors when he becomes king!!!!! he wants to help him succeed!!!! he wants him to be happy!!!! laios is his friend!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
im just. people like laios!! laios is a nice guy! he is friendly and cares about people! he is weird, he doesn't understand most social cues, he oversteps boundaries, but they stay beside him, because they like him and he is their friend. he is their friend!!!!! friendship is not all sunshine and rainbows, relationships in general are not sunshine and rainbows. you will upset people, people will upset you, you will get into arguments, things will happen, but at the end of the day, the people close to you like you! they love you! they care for you! they want to work it out and get through it because they love you, but they will feel those emotions first! human relationships are complex and messy and life is complicated. even shows for toddlers know this.
if you truly believe any of these characters hate laios you are worse than a toddler. watch some fucking oobi or something. god. fuck.
take this
Tumblr media
thanks

js how piranesi is homophobic?
(warnings for discussions of spoilers of Piranesi in this post)
there's only one explicitly gay character in the book and he's one of the villains. he falls into the super harmful "predatory gay man" stereotype. there's one much younger man he kidnapped and imprisoned for something like two years.
"...when a woman employed to clean his house found something: a brown liquid that seemed to ooze out from beneath a wall in one of the rooms[...]She sponged up the liquid. Then she smelt it. Urine and faeces. A little more liquid seeped out from under the wall[...]Then she called the police. Behind the wall - the fake wall - the police found a room in which was a young man, very ill and entirely incoherent."
he was also super manipulative towards the people around him. he was a professor, and one of his students was a young woman who he convinced to move into his house as a housekeeper and at one point it's mentioned that he convinced her to start a fight with her parents (who she was really close to) and use that as an excuse to cut them off permanently - and he did this for no reason whatsoever. it was explicitly stated in the book that it didn't benefit him in any way, he just wanted to test her loyalty.
anyways, he was just an overall awful human being. and i understand that, given he was the villain, that was the kind of the point of his character, and i'm not saying that gay people can't be evil, but when every single other character in your book is straight and the one gay man is this abhorrent excuse for a human being.......
Not to mention that his gayness is brought up several times in conjunction with his evilness. I can't really be assed to go looking for more quotes, but here are two I was able to find on google:
"[Laurence Arne-Sayles] is the perfect example of a transgressive thinker – transgressive in more ways than one – morally, intellectually, sexually, criminally.”
"[Laurence]…is the transgressive thinker par excellence. … He was gay when it was still illegal.”
