hi! i have a relationship question that i could really use advice on if you’re willing to help… my ex and i recently decided to try to give things another shot. i had previously broken up with him when i was in a bad spot with my mental health, and that situation has since improved significantly. he is extremely kind and understanding, and has always been nothing but supportive of me, my work, and my dreams. i feel safe with him. despite this, i don’t know if i feel that i am still in love with him the way that i used to be. i agreed to give things another shot because i knew that i would forever regret the “what if” if i didn’t at least try, but my intuition is telling me that despite his many wonderful qualities, he’s just not “the one” for me. do you have any advice as to how i can let him down gently? i care about him very much and i really don’t want to break his heart.

Hi love! Situations where you need to break up with a genuinely good person suck. So know these unsettling and anxious feelings totally make sense when trying to navigate this predicament.

Personally, I would frame this difficult conversation through this type of lens: Share that you have a feeling that there's some incompatibility between you two even though you think he's genuinely a wonderful person, and you never want to resent him for his ways of expressing love/desire for you because of this incompatibility. Let him know that this decision is difficult for you, and not one you made lightly, but you believe that you're stifling both your own & his chance of finding "the one" if you don't end the relationship this time around. You believe both of you deserve to be loved in a way that lights you up inside every day.

The thing is, while you should display empathy and tact when delivering difficult words like this, despite how well-intended you are, you never know how a person is going to react. Of course, you don't want to hurt his feelings, but initial disappointment always tops long-term or breeding resentment. Tactful honesty is always the best policy. It's better to tell him now than in 2 years during couples counseling, filing for divorce, etc.
