The tiny red frog paced back and forth across your desk, sputtering in fury, his tiny webbed feet making the smallest pat-pat-pat sounds.

You bit your lip trying not to laugh.

“Riddle, calm down—”

“Do not tell me to calm down! I’ve been turned into a frog! A frog! This is a disgrace to Heartslabyul, a violation of school policy, and I demand a formal apology from that imbecile who—!”

You reached out and gently scooped him up before he worked himself into a meltdown.

“...Put me down.”

“You’re going to pop a vessel, and I’m not dealing with frog Riddle and internal bleeding.”

He huffed, cheeks puffing out — which didn’t help his image.

“Professor Trein said the curse can only be broken by a true love’s kiss.”

Y“You… think I’m your—?”

He flushed from neck to forehead (or whatever frogs have).

“I’m not saying that! But… the spell reacted when you held me. I-it warmed slightly. It must mean something.”

“So… do you want me to try?”

“Only if you want to. It would be... appreciated.”

You pressed a soft kiss to his head — and the next moment, you were nearly bowled over by a very flustered Riddle, kneeling on the floor.

“I—I’m back?” He patted himself frantically. “My hands—my hair—! Thank the Queen!”

“Nice to see you again, Riddle.”

He glanced at you and cleared his throat.

“Ahem. This… this doesn’t excuse public displays of affection without permission, but… I suppose I’ll allow it. Just this once.”

“So I’m allowed to kiss you now?”

He turned red again.“Y-you already did. Don’t push your luck!”

“I find this form oddly peaceful,” the frog says in that same deep tone.

You look up to the roof of Ramshackle, where Frog Malleus sits like a green gargoyle (LIKE BATMAN BRO)

“You’re… surprisingly calm about this.”

“In my long life, I have transformed into many things—dragon, mist. This is merely a new shape. Though I must admit, the lack of horns is somewhat tragic.”

“Lilia says it can only be undone with a true love’s kiss.”

His bright green eyes meet yours.

“…Then allow me to make a humble request.”

“You want me to—?”

“I would entrust my form, my life, and my curse to you alone.”

Your heart flutters like a hummingbird. You reach up and kiss his head.

When it fades, Malleus stands before you—tall, regal, radiant.

“I knew it,” he says, lips curling into a soft smile. “It was you.”

You glance away, flushed.

“You’re really okay with me being your… uh… ‘true love’?”

He steps closer.

“You already were. Long before this spell.”

You open your closet and find a bright green frog sulking on a pile of hoodies.

“Idia… you’ve been hiding in here for three days.”

A croaky sigh.

“Don’t look at me. I’ve become one of the background mobs. No… worse. I’m the tutorial boss.”

You stifle a laugh.

“Ortho said only true love’s kiss will break the curse.”

“Ugh, man. Cringe. That’s such a normie mechanic. What is this, some knockoff otome game from the App Store?”

“Idia. You’re literally living in my hoodie drawer.”

“If I croak, delete my browser history. But not the bookmarks. Some of them are important.”

“Do you want to be cured or not?”

“…If it has to be anyone, I’m… okay with it being you. But don’t laugh, okay?”

You gently kiss him. Idia is human again — hair ablaze in blue flames, sitting on the floor in your hoodie.

“You… you kissed me. That was, like, a cutscene moment. Did you see that sparkle effect??”

“Maybe we got the good ending.”

“I am going to SUE whoever enchanted that bottle.”

You stare into a porcelain teacup where Frog Azul is sitting, glaring indignantly.

“You turned into a frog in the middle of the Lounge, Azul.”

“In front of customers, no less! Floyd’s been threatening to toss me in the fryer all morning.”

“Jade said the only way to undo it is with—”

“—Do not say it. I already know. And I hate it.”

“But it’s—”

“True love’s kiss, yes, yes. What a cheap fairytale mechanic. There should be an antidote. I should have an antidote. I sell antidotes!”

“So what’s stopping you?”

He goes quiet.

“…You do want it to be me, don’t you?”

He makes a tiny, deflated ribbit.

“You just had to say so.”

You lean down and kiss him gently and a moment later, Azul is back, flustered and drenched.

“Note to self,” he mutters, adjusting his glasses.

“Burn that perfume recipe. And draft a new contract with… specific kissing clauses.”

“So I am your true love?”

He blushes down to his collar.

“well—technically—yes—but let’s keep this strictly off the record!”

“You have got to be kidding me.”

You stared at the small frog sitting on your desk. The frog crossed its little arms (legs?) and let out an exasperated sigh.

“It’s not my fault! Azul's experimental potion exploded, and this is what I get for dodging it too late.”

“You’re a frog, Jamil.”

“Thank you for the observation, my savior,” he deadpanned.

“Now hurry up and kiss me so I can get back to normal before Kalim finds out and tries it himself.”

Your face twisted in horror.

“You want me to kiss a frog?!”

“Do you want me to stay like this and croak around the school forever? Besides, it’s not like you’d be kissing any frog. It’s me. I know it’s not ideal, but you’re my—”

You interrupted, cheeks warm.

“I’m your...?”

He looked away, small arms crossed.

“...My best chance at breaking this curse. Obviously.”

“…You could’ve just said ‘true love’ instead of dancing around it.”

“I’m not dancing around anything. You’re the one making this weird.”

Despite the ridiculousness of the situation, your heart thumped a little harder. You hesitated, leaned down, and—

“Do not tell anyone about this after I turn back,”

You pressed a quick kiss. A second later, a very flustered, very human Jamil stood before you — eyes wide, lips parted, face red.

“I cannot believe that worked,”

He groaned, dragging a hand down his face.

“I’m going to kill Azul…”

You looked at him smirking.

“But hey... true love’s kiss, huh?”

“Don’t make me regret this,” he mumbled—but his eyes lingered on your lips little longer.

You stared down at the most perfect frog you’d ever seen.

Velvety green, regal posture, and an expression of pure judgment in those little violet eyes.

“This is... humiliating,” the frog croaked — and yes, that was Vil Schoenheit’s voice.

You choked back a laugh.

“You actually still sound graceful. Impressive.”

“This is not the time for jokes, sweet potato. I was merely trimming a rose stem when that clumsy oaf Epel tripped into the cauldron. Now look at me. My skin is... green. Green!”

“Well, at least it’s glowing,”

“The only way to undo this is a kiss, and Rook has already tried to volunteer. I had to hop away in terror. You’re my only hope, darling.”

You knelt down beside him.

“So… ‘true love’s kiss’ actually works?”

“Rook thinks the potion was modeled after an old fable. He also said you’re the ‘fairest in Vil’s eyes.’ And honestly? I’m inclined to agree.”

“Wait… are you saying you—?”

“I don’t say anything I don’t mean,” he interrupted.

“Now. Kiss me. Preferably before I croak... in the literal sense.”

Suppressing the heat rushing to your face, you gently leaned in and gave him a quick kiss.

Vil returned — golden-haired, poised, a hand already brushing nonexistent dirt from his shoulder.

“Thank the stars. My complexion is intact.“Though I must admit... for a kiss with a frog, it was surprisingly romantic.”

“You planned this, didn’t you?”

“If I did, would you be mad?”

The frog lay sprawled out in your pencil case. You stared at him, unimpressed.

“You’ve been like this for three days and haven’t moved except to complain.”

Leona lifted a webbed foot.

“I’m royalty. I don’t do peasant things like hopping.”

“You’re literally a frog.”

“Tch. And I’d be a prince again by now if you’d just kiss me already.”

“Excuse me?”

“It’s the whole ‘true love’s kiss’ cliché. Apparently I’m cursed. Just my luck. I’m not letting just anyone smooch me. So c’mon. Be a sport.”

“Why me?”

“Because you’re the only one I’d willingly let get that close. Don’t act surprised.”

You narrowed your eyes. “How do I know this isn’t a trick?”

“Does this look like a prank? Do you think I like being this size? I’m living in a lunchbox, herbivore.”

Despite everything, he looked ridiculously smug for a frog.

You sighed and leaned down. “If this doesn’t work, I’m feeding you to Grim.”

Leona snorted.

“Just kiss me already.”

You kissed him, and your frog vanished — replaced by a lounging Leona, now human.

He grinned lazily.

“Knew you’d go for it.”

“Don’t flatter yourself—!”

He smirked. “Too late. You already kissed me. That makes you my lover now, right?”

Its from the devs as Ikemen, they are collab with a studio name DMM Games, and what my friend said. They are known to make Otome nsfw browser games. However, they mention that it hard to make an account for those games.

Luckily, cause this is a collab with Cybird. We are getting a app version. Though it is going to be a JP version. But with Cybird's history we will get an English version for this and I can't wait!!!

So, the whole situation with NTT, NTT West, NTT Solmare and Obey Me! seems to be: (Preface the Company structure is NTT > NTT West > Solmare > Shall We Date/Obey Me) NTT West is under performing and they were told by NTT that they have to get their shit together and specifically called out Solmare as a means in which they can increase growth for NTT West. Now Solmare has seemingly in a desire to earn more money decided to stop development on Obey Me! games as a whole (in part because they aren't doing well financially) and move their focus into Gal Games (with a new browser game Fantome Rapport, and a seeming revival of Moe!Ninja Girls). Those so far are mostly the facts. Opinions/Speculation below:

It is possible they may revive older otome titles (Most likely Wizardess Heart) but it seems very unlikely at the moment. They already shut down Story Jar. Frankly, I think they were trying to move away from otome for a while. The lacking romance in NB might have very well been trying to steer it into more Joseimuke territory, which considering that some of the top earning Joseimuke games are also Rhythm games (Enstars, and Idolish7) or have notable rhythm game elements (Twisted Wonderland) seems in line with NB being a rhythm game too. How will this go for Solmare? Who knows. Moe!Ninja Girls had a fanbase but it's been four years since they stopped content for the game. Fantome Rapport is a as-of-now japan-only browser title + audio drama series that they're definitely getting well-established VAs behind (the VA for Jolyne Kugo, and Paimon (Genshin) are both cast as side characters). The Gal Game genre (Boy x Girl, or even just "gooner bait") is very broad and absolutely stacked with competition. Like DMM.com already has cornered it with browser-based games (and they have porn) in japan. There is Nutaku for EN. DLsite and Erolabs are even more competition in that space. There is also Azur Lane, Blue Archive, Nikke: Goddess of Victory, Girl's Frontline 2, and plenty of other smaller titles (like Crush Crush). Visual Novels are not as popular as other game genres amongst Gal Games. They are popular ones but they tend to do better as non-mobile experiences. Also, Katawa Shoujo exists and is free. Meanwhile, the Otome, and Joseimuke genres are under served. Especially in NA. Like, Love and Deepspace isn't earning Genshin money because people don't like otome. If they were smart, and really didn't want to keep making Otome games; they'd try to tap both markets with a more inclusive game/series that aimed at both and male and female players with romance. There are games that kinda there (Genshin Impact/Honkai Star Rail/ZZZ, Wuthering Waves, Granblue Fantasy) but they all lack on romance (they also tend to lean more towards a male audience). As far as SWD/Obey Me dev's future; They're actually fighting for their life right now (figurative). They better have a real good plan for whatever they plan to continue OM with because I don't doubt for a minute that Solmare will nuke OM from existence if they don't start earning more/enough. So, like, remember to archive everything! Ex and Bee is also up in the air as their only other kinda-sorta otome project. There was at least a sign of life from the twitter account but at the moment no news on what's next.

Yes! There are so many different iterations of the game lmao. My favorite is the PS3 release (Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi), which is all of the original game content plus a significant amount of extra scenes in both the general route and for each LI route. I thought the narrative flow and character development was excellent in this and it included lots of slice-of-life moments, plus I'm super nostalgic about it, so I'm very attached XD It's like my "canon" Hakuoki game. I did enjoy the new characters and content that Hakuoki Shinkai brought, though!

(Oof I feel that, both the price and the computer troubles... my own computer is starting to refuse to open anything beyond 6-7 browser tabs and I live in fear every day. I hope you are able to play the games for yourself one day!!!)

Since you mentioned play store, I’m assuming you use an android phone. In that case, mugenro would be in the JP play store or you can download it through QooApp. HOWEVER. The mobile app version is not the 18+ version.

To play the 18+ version, you will need to play it through DMMGame’s website on a mobile browser, which will require a VPN if you’re outside of Japan. You also need a DMMGames account. I do not know how to set up a VPN on a phone.

Uhhh…I use an android emulator on PC but I don’t use android apps so I can’t suggest a translator that you can run at the same time as other apps other than GT and Papago. Deepl might be able to do real time translations now, but it’ll often spit out weird or overly complex sentences

I'm looking for otome game recommendations!

I'm new to the genre and just looking for some beginner-friendly otome games. I've consumed a ton of otome-isekai webnovels and animes and I love them, but it made me realize I actually haven't really played one before or know anything about them.

The only one I've played was this browser game when I was in elementary school, though I don't remember the name. I don't need anything crazy, I'm mostly curious about the common tropes/plots and dialogues found with the love interests. I'm considering writing my own otome isekai but I don't want to write about it when I've never even really played one! I want the setting to be as believable as possible for an otome game. So I'd primarily be interested in anything including the following:

School setting

Royalty/nobility

Highly common tropes/love interest archetypes

Magic (bonus, not as important as the rest)

Cliches are welcome here! The cheesier the better! I want the most otome game to ever otome! The pinnacles of the genre! I'm on a budget, but as long as there's a decent fanwiki/youtube playthrough of it, I'll accept the rec even if I can't play it myself!!!

Ok, another one because i was curious if you heard of this series.

Since i remember the time you were a fan of "your boyfriend" game (i don't know if you still are), What about "Something's wrong with Sunny Day Jack" (another otome game)? It may not be scary but it does gives an uneasy feeling due to his manipulation, especially since Jack is a ghost that only MC can see and chat with. for someone who's able to manipulate his sunshine (the MC), he cares about consent and whether or not his sunshine is comfortable enough to let him do anything to them.

I assume you aren't a fan of it though (if you heard about it)? I'd like to warn you it also does have...sexual content, i remember playing the demo on browser version and i don't know if i'm gonna be able to play the full game now that it got a new art style and more content.

It also got voice acting.

I've played sunny day Jack. It was pretty good. I enjoy otome games. And I'm not all that interested in Your Boyfriend anymore.

I don't talk about them because most of my audience are minors. I didn't realise Your Boyfriend would get so...descriptive (I was interested in it when it was still early in its development so it didn't have much nsfw stuff). But yeah I usually try to avoid talking about sexual content. Suggestive stuff isn't so bad but still, nothing graphic.

Pixiv for Beginners

(Note: I wrote this for finding Jack Jeanne art but most of it is usable for finding Japanese fan art in general, including for other otome series)

Pixiv is a website primarily for Japanese speakers for both fan art and fanfic, both of which generally fit under the umbrella of "doujinshi" (同人誌). This word sometimes has connotations of being nsfw (r18) but there’s a lot of content that is cute fluff and all-ages (全年齢). 

While most of the content on the site is in Japanese, the site interface has an English version that makes it pretty easy to sign up and use. You can find the English site here: https://www.pixiv.net/en/

Mobile users can also find an app version: iOS | Android

Make an account like you would with any other site. Pretty standard.

Once you’re registered and logged in, you can start searching. For Jack Jeanne art, good tags to start with are ジャックジャンヌ and JACKJEANNE (all caps). You can choose to limit results to all ages, r18 only, or both. 

The ‘top’ tab gives you some of the best entries in the tag. Illustrations are likely the most useful category for non-Japanese speakers. Manga is, well, manga (machine translating these would require some sort of OCR program) and novels is the category it uses for fanfiction. The text is readable by browser machine translators and is compatible with automatic JP-EN dictionary lookup apps like Yomichan. Unfortunately, the pixiv search and tag features are not on the level of depth of something like AO3 but you can search for ship tags or specific character names. 

You can like and follow both creators and works both publicly (short click/tap) or privately (click/tap and hold).

The most popular JJ ships are between the main LIs + Kisa in the following order: Neji, Fumi, Mitsuki, Sou, Kai, Suzu (see previous post of JP ship names). But all of the characters have decent followings so you can usually find things, even for the side characters. I’ll attach the full list of character names in Japanese under the read line since this post is already pretty long. You can search for any of these on pixiv or even just Google and will likely find something. Here is a character list with images (JP).

Generally, you can find character name lists by searching the name of the game in Japanese (Wikipedia or VNDB can help you out) + キャラ一覧.

Happy pride! I just posted my game recs post on my otome blog, but I thought about shouting out my own games as well since I need to talk about them more lol

Memory Ghosts

A slice-of-life paranormal otome about Clara (renamable) joining the paranormal club at the community college she attends. About being lost at the start of adulthood, and being haunted by the past in a figurative and literal sense. Features 4 routes (3m, 1f) and about four hours of play.

My very first game, but I still have a soft spot for it!

PRETTYBOY Inc. is Hiring!

A surreal semi-horror game about a trans guy having a really weird job interview. Super short, about 10-20 minutes of play time and you can play in browser.

I love the vibes of this one, and I'm hoping to make more games in this universe one day.

Disruptive Compassion

A tragic fantasy game about two guys thrown into a jail cell together. One wants to retell a children's fairy tale, the other wants to forget his sins. Another short game between 10-20 minutes.

I like this more in hindsight, and I just love the idea of fairy tales and how easily they can be changed to suit our needs.

FaithEater

A dark souls inspired otome where you failed your duty as a Faith Eater and are now trapped with a Death God. Will you kill it, or will you commit the greatest sin? Another to the collection of short games.

I'm actually in love with this one lol, really like the vibes I managed to capture here.

Burning Academia

You know, I never mention this here because it has it's own blog and it's for a more mature audience then my other games but I'll throw it here. An interactive fiction game about being forced to attend a strange college after being attacked by wraiths. Learn about magic, death, and what it feels like to discover yourself. The prologue + chapter 1 are out and chapter 2 is coming out in like a week.

My most popular game because I underestimated how popular IFs are LOL. Very much something I write for fun!

Spring Boy

An otome that follows Eri and the spring she meets a strange young man. Where she finds magic, she might also find tragedy. Currently a demo + I'm actually completely redoing the demo since I lost half of the original files when my laptop died. Still, thought I should mention it!

The new demo is dropping at the end of June for Otome Jam!

Been in a very visual novel/otome game/dating sim mood lately.

Started with Tears of Themis, got worse with this one Xiao x Lumine one on Itch.io, got even worse by some non Genshin related ones on the same site (Project Blue and Blooming Panic, eugh, I'm feeling sappy), and now I've been replaying one I got in 2015 I think

Too bad it's Amnesia:Memories.

I used to love the anime cuz, eugh, the character designs were so extra and I was like 16 and deep in the anime hole. Also Shin is so pretty and he's all black and red lol. I even made several Shin themes for my browser lol. These designs are so cursed btw. Thigh high boots, everything's ripped and the whole outfits probably take like hours to put on lol. Kinda cool but dumb.

I remember not being too happy with the game, though, and it took me until now to realize why.

Back then I only got 1 out of 5 good endings. Kent my beloved, no wonder I have fond memories of only him lol.

Going in again my main thoughts were "Shin's mean", "Toma's creepy and crazy", "Ikki's gross" and "don't care about Ukyo" buuuuuut

I still think Shin's mean, but now I kinda get it. He also softened in the good ending so I'll let it slide, but his constant boundary crossing makes him a bit iffy. And, unsurprisingly, I love his voice. Tetsuya Kakihara might always sound the same but eugh I love him anyway.

Toma freaks me out, can't trust him on any route. He literally puts MC in a dog cage cuz he's too overprotective. It's resolved in the good ending, but it's crazy enough for me to not be able to get over it. He's also a freak on Shin's route. Some might be into the yandere stuff but eh, not my thing.

I wanted to quickly get through Ikki's route before going for main man Kent, but turns out I actually really liked Ikki. Kinda worried that he might end up being my fav lol, I'm a sucker for the "playboy actually falls in love" stuff lol. Positively surprised.

Can't wait for Kent next time. I think he was a silly little math nerd who blushed a lot. Iirc he makes the player actually solve math problems lol. That's the way to my heart apparently xD Oh, I like his voice too, Akira Ishida. Not one of my favs but still.

Had to stop for tonight before starting Kent's route, and I finally unlocked Ukyo's, too. He seems like the meta guy (like Seven/707 in Mystic Messenger) and he pops in on every route talking about how "you probably don't remember me but be careful" and sometimes goes a bit crazy but I'm definitely interested to see how his good ending goes. Probably gonna end with me crying and wanting to hug him to make things better lol

Might even go for some of the bad and normal endings afterwards, who knows. Gonna ruin all the good vibes immediately xD

Anyway I don't think anyone's gonna read this but hey, it's there for those who might go through the game's tag soooo suffer!

A loooooooot of shit happened in a short amount of time, so let's quickly run through it all!!!

The Knight Dance Is Live!!

If you didn't hear the news, me and my team's entry for the Amare Game Festival is up for download and browser play!! There's a bit more polish needed, but I'm really happy with how everything came together! Play The Knight Dance!

(I decided against a postmortem for this project; the only lesson to take away/the main thing to reflect on is that I DON'T like being in charge 😂 My team was lovely, but gosh was it all more taxing than I prepared for?!?!)

Ko-Fi subs are paused for June

I feel like the people who check out Tumblr aren't on ko-fi, and vice versa. But just in case: I still have the freebies going up, but I need a moment to 1) plan more content worthy of people subscribing for and 2) a fighting chance to tackle a bit of my gaming backlog. I've played all the short games and I have all these long ones left. Which is amazing. But playing games and making games is becoming harder and harder to juggle. Also, I'm a big reader?? Gemini loves herself some books. Have I told y'all that before I create bookish content on the side and have an audience for that AND my anniversary date is actually today skskskssk.

Back to the main point.

Crushed Review

...Maybe y'all saw me screaming and crying last when Naja from Blerdy Otome streamed Crushed on Twitch, but here I am again crying some more BECAUSE A REVIEW IS LIVE AND I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!

High School Daze: Junior Year 2 updated demo is ALSO LIVE!!

...It soft launched last Thursday, oops 😂 And then I made legit announcements on itch.io and Tiktok. I will make a proper post to be pinned on Tumblr sometime next month (I want TKD to continue her time in the sun!)

TBH, there are so many games and demos and updates, and game shapped things dropping this month that I kinda don't want to be a developer for a hot minute?? I just want to play some games?? And maybe even replay some old favorites too??

Anyway I was randomly trying to remember a free otome game I played back when I first started playing them, and I have been on a short odyssey. I couldn't remember any of the names or anything, just like, it was free, it had kinda of awful art but fantastic writing, I think I found it on the English Otome Games Tumblr or website, and I had a vague memory of a cg of like... Light in ice? Anyway, here are the results:

-The game is called Frozen Essence. If it used to be listed on English Otome Games it isn't anymore, but I found it by googling "free otome game 2013 or earlier" and miraculously ending up with a link to an old lemmasoft forum post. I feel dread in my heart at the increasing enshittification of Google and a nostalgia for greater forum prominence.

-before that i did scan like, the whole list on englishotomegames.net. I remember when the list was so much shorter. How_far_we've_come.mp3

-scanning the whole list did remind me of the name of The Knife of the Traitor, which was another one I wanted to remember because I recall it being very good. So I might replay that.

-it was also a trip down memory lane of both games I'd played and games I did not play but remembered looking into, because there weren't that many. I'd forgotten about re: Alistair++. I will never fully forget about Cafe Rogue because the mini games were so goddamn aggravating, but I did forget that they released a new version a few years ago on steam and apparently also just in the browser? I def saw an announcement but I never tried it. I should play it sometime, for old times' sake.

-Before going to Google I tried searching otome games on my Tumblr. This did not give me the name of Frozen Essence but did tell me that I apparently beat all of re: Alistair++, which I did not remember. I think I used to be a better completionist

So anyway. I am now being haunted by nostalgia and memory ghosts.
