Id like to say that my life is good, that I’m happy where I am but I’m not. I’m upset and frustrated; but most of all I’m living on the street, preforming stupid acrobatic tricks just to feed myself. It doesn’t take long for things to settle down; I’m essentially useless now that Zuko has gotten his bending back. Even if he did it how I told him to do it all along but whatever.

The bickering still happens, and I want to throw a knife at him but part of me still loves him. I didn’t hate being betrothed to him as much as I thought I did.

“Did you ever miss us?” I ask him, “after you were banished. I refused to Azula to give away your location and then the Avatars when you wrote me” I confess, “so I left”

“I think. At first I did, but I don’t— I don’t think we would’ve worked together. We fight all the time. I hated you at first. And you hated me” He admits, looking down slightly. He sighs heavily

“Yeah. I guess. But I didn’t really hate- hate you” I admit, “I missed you. I liked knowing you”

He nods, “I did like knowing you too, you’ve changed so much. I mean your fire it’s pink” he laughs

“Maybe it’s from my bubbly personality” I tease, he laughs

“Yeah. Gotten married” I laugh, and I keep laughing because the thought of getting married feels so small and childish to the war we’re supposed to be preparing for.

He laughs; rolling laughs that make me keep laughing. My laughs turn short and wheezy before his face straightens, “are you ok? Can you breathe?” His face turns to me and he smiles seeing my smile. It’s a smile that makes my cheeks hurt and heart race.

“As the Prince of the fire nation. I’m supposed to hate you. Because you’ve betrayed our nation. But as Zuko. As your Zuko. In this moment I don’t feel anything but hate. I feel love for you. A fire that I never want to put out” he tells me, scooting closer to me. I let him cradle my face, “I never hated you”

“I never hated you either” a weak laugh escapes me but he kisses me before it truly develops. It’s a kiss that devours me whole, wrapping itself into my heart and soul.

I’m gonna be a little less silly and goofy here because these are some genuine things that need to be brought to light regarding my personal stance on this

They wrote a lot about g3n0c1de and Aang and considering that I am white, I’m not gonna speak on that. That’s for the people of color who have experienced these types of things to argue over. I am, however, going to say that I don’t think Aang, Katara, Sokka etc’s trauma was all that deep in the show. Once more, they were written by white men who havn’t experienced a day of being a minority in their lives. ZK’s have a tendency to look at things for a doylist perspective rather than a watsonian perspective that this person may be confusing.

Also, the STW was never a colony. Neither were the air temples. They were never “a [tribe/temple] under the full or partial political control of another [nation], typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that [nation]”.

My main point here will be addressing the whole “sending people to bully others” claim, because I 100% stand by it.

Take a moment to close your eyes and image the first thing that comes to mind at this term

Kat/ang and Zutara shippers are CONSTANTLY at each other’s throats. It’s one thing after another of constant harassment (from both sides). When I say that someone is “sending people to harass and bully” members of the ZK fandom, I mean simply that they do not care whether their post that emphasizes peoples names and blogs activates a certain sensitive group of people in this fandom to harass them.

In other words: is does not matter if you’re trying to or not, you not only included peoples blogs in your post, but reiterated who they were and why everything they said was “so wrong”. You can say what you want about being morally superior or whatever, but your actions speak louder than words (ew I sound like an elementary school teacher. The fact that I have to phrase it like one is crazy though).

“I never told anyone to bully these people”. You are so so right, you gave them the opportunity to, you quite literally led them straight to these accounts. You did nothing to ensure that “oh, maybe since this fandom is constantly trying to kill each other I should probably protect these peoples identities so they don’t get unnecessary hate.” Because it WILL happen.

And I probably wouldn’t be this bent about it if this persons ENTIRE account didn’t revolve around hating on ZK shippers.

This is my main problem with the discourse, ZK’s May hate a character or two, but KA’s hate the people.

The Chief tasks Sokka and I with the most important mission of all: making sure Princess Yue remains safe during the Fire Nation invasion. Our week-long stay at the Northern Water Tribe turned sour and we were all gearing for battle. It’s just like them, the empire, to ruin anything good.

In the beginning, I was amazed by the icy fortress. It was the most snow I’d ever seen in my life. During the day, it was calming to breathe the cold air in and out. Such a harsh contrast from the constant crimson and heat I was used to. It felt like a cleanse. Or maybe that’s just how it feels to be around so many water-benders.

Katara had trouble convincing them that she was worth teaching, as only boys and men can become water-benders. Girls were stuck with the healing. But Master Pakku should’ve known better than to spit this rhetoric in her face.

Sokka and I were baffled, almost laughing, knowing what was to come.

She quickly impressed him and bested every single one of his students. In a week, she progressed beyond any of them and shut Master Pakku right up. She deserves this, she’s been working tirelessly and on her own. With official technique and teachings, she could be the best water-bender in the world.

Me? I was enjoying the solitude of the ice and snow in front of me. It was quiet up here. You could pretend the Fire Nation didn’t exist with how endless the sea drifted off.

After coming out to Aang, Sokka, and Katara, I was focused on sharpening my bending skills. I was a little rough around the edges, but I smoothed them out in no time. Fire-bending felt like breathing. It felt like blinking. It felt like… I’m me again.

That glee, though, lasted for only a week before the Fire Nation showed up at the Northern Water Tribe’s doorsteps.

Now, Sokka and I were walking around the icy homes and bridges, looking for Princess Yue amidst the chaos.

“Sokka! Y/N!” She calls out for us. I turn towards her voice and spot her. The Princess is a few yards away, closing the space in a hurry. “There’s someone attacking the Oasis!”

“Stay here with Yue,” I tell Sokka. “I’ll go ahead.” The boy in blue nods at my instruction and she points me in the direction she was coming from. I use my bending to propel myself into the air, moving faster than walking or running ever could.

When I reach the circular door, I instantly see water and fire clashing together, taking the other out. It’s a fire-bender attacking Katara. I remain quiet as I walk closer to them, leveraging the element of surprise.

The enemy gets the better of Katara, knocking her into a wooden pole. She’s unable to get up and continue fighting.

Every step I take reveals the details of the fire-bender. He grabs Aang, not knowing I’m right behind him.

I’m close enough to hear him now. “You rise with the moon; I rise with the sun.” His voice hits me like a thousand bricks. I know that voice, I love that voice. That voice visits me in my dreams.

I raise my fists and ignite fire-blades. “Put him down, Zuko.”

He turns around. His shoulders drop when he meets my familiar gaze and his eyebrows burrow. “Y/N?”

“Put him down.” I repeat, any sign of a happy reunion absent on my face.

“You know I can’t do that.” He says, igniting a bubble in my throat. I want to cry; I want to jump into his arms. I want to ask him where he’s been, and who he is now. But his grip on Aang doesn’t loosen, and I know he’s not my Zuko anymore. He’s someone else entirely.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You can’t.” He replies, and I can hear a pinch of sorrow in his tone. His words work to distract me for a split second, and he aims a fire-bending kick at me. Punching and burning the side of my ribs. I was not expecting that blunt of a force to knock me out, but it did. He knows my weak spots like I know his.

Zuko vanishes with the young Avatar and it’s just me and Katara, laying on the soft grass, defeated. We look at each other, mirroring the same expression, water begging to escape our eyes.

He knew I wouldn’t be expecting such a strong blow from him. He knew I would take it easy. Just like he should know, I’m a better fighter when I’m angry.

Sokka, Katara, Princess Yue, and I are flying through the skies on Appa trying to look for Aang and Zuko. Where could they have gone?

I’ve been in a silent fury since they found Katara and I in the oasis, sans Aang, and I’m sure Sokka’s noticed by now that I’m in a different state of mind. The wound on my side isn’t getting any easier to manage, and I’m pissed.

I wince from the burn. “Let me help.” Katara offers. I lay on my back, watching the sky pass Appa by, and let her heal me. She takes this chance to ask a question. “Y/N, what did Zuko mean by ‘you know I can’t?” Sokka slightly turns his head, focusing on my answer. “Do you guys know each other?”

I sigh. “Zuko was my best friend.”

“The one from the agni kai?” She asks, remembering my story from Jeong Jeong’s hideout.

“Yes. We grew up together, we were… close.” I take a breath to stop myself from crying. The pain from using my lungs proving to be less hurtful than my reunion with Zuko. I’m not going to spend any more tears on him. I don’t even know him anymore. “Then he left, and I didn’t see him for three years. The Fire Lord banished him… for not fighting back that day.” Sokka faces forward again, clearly bothered by the revelation. “He’s looking for Aang, it’s the only way he can come back home.”

As Katara’s gentle hands heal my wounds, Sokka speaks up. “And I thought I couldn’t hate the guy any more than I already do.”

A flashing light dashes across the blue sky and almost inherently, Katara knows its Aang. “That’s got to be him!” She points, and Sokka guides Appa in the direction of the shooting star.

Soon enough, we find Zuko holding an awakened Aang by his collar and land Appa nearby. He drops the Avatar and gets in his fighting stance. “Here for a rematch?”

I’m the first one to leap, feet landing on the snow. “You were never much of a match.” I immediately begin an attack on him, making the moon jealous of my power under it. I knock him out of balance, but I’m not the only one with a vendetta.

Katara bends snow to lift him up and pull him down with force, effectively knocking him out of consciousness.

Sokka reaches Aang and cuts him free from the rope. “The spirits are in trouble!” The Avatar warns, “Let’s get back to the oasis.”

Everyone climbs back onto Appa, but before we’re in the air, the air-bender speaks up. “We can’t leave him here.”

“Yes, we can. Cmon, let’s go!” Sokka hurries.

“No, we can’t. He’s a person, he’ll die.” Aang looks to me, as if he already knows our history and as much as I dislike it, he’s right. We can’t leave him here. Even if I don’t know who he is anymore, I still wouldn’t let anything like that happen to him.

Aang grabs Zuko, sits him on Appa’s saddle, and hurries off into the sky.

Zuko’s Uncle, Iroh, is holding the dead moon-spirit in his hands. Seeing him here with Katara and Sokka is unnerving. But alas, another reunion is put on the back burner. The world is in shades of grey, thanks to Admiral Zhao. We’re too late.

The old man looks at Yue, taking in her moon-light hair. “Maybe you can do something. You have been touched by the spirit.”

“I have,” Yue answers. “It gave me life. Maybe I can give it back.”

She gets up to touch the cream-colored fish, but Sokka’s hesitant. “No!” He grabs onto her arm. “Your father told me to protect you. I can’t let you do this.”

“It’s true. He told us to make sure nothing happens to you.” I stand by his side. The three of us were becoming closer each day we spent here. We- I can’t let her go.

“It’s my duty.” She says, in all her regal manner. She lets go of his hand to place her hands on the moon spirit. Instantly, it starts to glow.

Princess Yue faints into Sokka’s arms, and we all know what just happened. She’s gone. After a few seconds, her body mystically disappears, and the single fish begins to glow in Iroh’s hands.

He places it back into the Oasis Pond. The fish swims, letting us know it’s alive. Letting us know Yue is alive.

The spirit rises from the water, forming into a beautiful Princess in front of us. She looks ethereal, glowing in white. I’m speechless.

“Good-bye, Sokka.” She whispers. “Thank you, both, for protecting me.” She holds my cheek with her left hand and Sokka’s with her right, letting us feel her new embodiment.

Then, she fizzles away, leaving an empty space where she once was.

“I’m surprised, Prince Zuko, that you are not trying to capture the Avatar. Is it because of your old friend?” Iroh questions. In the Oasis, he noticed Y/N and her change of heart. She had grown since he last saw her, much like Zuko. It ignited a spark of hope inside him that one day his nephew may follow in her footsteps and bring back the honor to the Fire Nation.

“I’m tired.” The prince replies. How long had it been since he had a good night’s sleep? He couldn’t remember.

All he could think about was Y/N and how she so gracefully defeated him. It ached his heart, how much he missed her. Their first time seeing each other in 3 years, and he strikes her on the side. Is this who he was now?

He spent the last few years at sea, looking for the Avatar so he could come home to Y/N. So they could begin the next phase of their relationship together.

He thought about this moment every day, and he ruined it. What does she think of him now?

A smile crept up on his face, though.

Zuko thinks to himself, Yeah, she’s a better fighter when she’s angry.

Another old show rewatch rant. This is more generalized but we as older watchers need to be mindful of the fact that these are KIDS shows.

Like I’m not saying a kids show can’t have substance but some of yall be taking scenes that are literally made for rule of funny or rule of cringe way too seriously.

Like omg yes Danny’s parents are hilariously incompetent and lowkey neglectful but to apply real life abuse to a cartoon about halfghost please be for real. If they were attentive parents you wouldn’t have a show, like the only reason Danny is able to get away with idk being a ghost superhero is cause his parents are oblivious it’s made for plot.

Aang kissing Katara without consent isn’t some makings of a future pedophile. Aang and Katara had just gotten back from the city, where they were bombarded by the press about Tenzin's wedding announcement in the paper. They decided to brush it off and headed home. When they walked into the living room, they found Bumi and Kya sitting there, both looking pretty serious.

Bumi spoke up first, "Mom, Dad, there's something you need to know," he said, laying it all out—from Tenzin not knowing about the wedding announcement to the fact that a small group of acolytes seems to be behind the whole mess. They also filled them in about how Lin had tried to contact Tenzin, but these acolytes and abbots from the air temples kept interfering. Aang shook his head, looking really frustrated. Katara rubbed her temples, clearly upset. "We need to retract that newspaper announcement," she said firmly.

Kya and Bumi exchanged glances before Kya nodded. "We'll handle it," she assured them.

Pema was speechless as she turned toward the voice. It was Sokka, Suyin’s dad.

"It's been a while since we last met," he said, his voice heavy with disappointment. "I can't believe this is how we’re reunited. "

Pema, defensive, replied, "Not to be rude, Master Sokka, but this doesn’t concern you. Tenzin and I love each other. I’m here because he wants me to marry into this family, and—"

He cut her off. "Are you so sure about that?"

Su looked puzzled. "What do you mean, Dad?"

“I saw him leaving in a hurry not long ago,” Sokka said, looking concerned. “I’m curious where he’s headed—or more importantly, who he’s going to.”

Pema immediately dashed out of the room and into the living area, where she ran into Katara and Aang.

“You!” Katara said, her eyes locking onto Pema. “You’re Pema, right?”

Pema’s eyes went wide, and she nodded, gulping.

Aang stepped forward and asked, “So, who are these acolytes involved in all this?” He paused, clearly frustrated. “And where can I find them? I need to have a word with them.”

Tenzin arrived at the farm with Oogi and quickly spotted some familiar faces—Chin and Choi.

“What are you doing here?!” they yelled, clearly upset after seeing the announcement. “Are you here to hurt Lin more?” Chin demanded.

“Leave now!” Choi shouted. “We don’t care if you’re a bender. We can’t let you near her!”

Izumi, who had heard the commotion, came over and saw Tenzin. “Please, Izumi,” Tenzin pleaded. “Let me see Lin. I need to talk to her and make things right.”

Izumi addressed Chin and Choi, who were still reluctant. “I’ll make sure Lin is safe,” she assured them. “If Tenzin does anything out of line, I’ll take care of him myself.”

As they walked in, Izumi smirked and asked, “What took you so long, lover boy?”

Tenzin just sighed, exhausted.

“I’m guessing Bumi and Kya filled you in on everything?” she added.

He nodded, “Yeah, they did.”

“Figures,” she replied, then suddenly slapped him across the face.

Tenzin was shocked but knew he probably had it coming. Izumi didn’t miss a beat. “Lin’s in her room, sleeping. She spent the whole morning crying and blaming herself for letting you go.”

Flashback 

Early in the morning, Kya, Bumi, Izumi, and Suyin headed over to Lin's place right after seeing the wedding announcement. When Lin opened the door, her eyes were red and puffy—she had obviously seen it too.

"Why are you guys here?" she asked, her voice flat.

"To check on you, duh," Suyin said, trying to lighten the mood.

"I'm okay…" Lin whispered, but the shakiness in her voice gave her away.

"Oh, come on, Lin. We know you better than that," Kya said, not buying it for a second.

"I didn't clear my schedule today just to hear you lie," Izumi added, her tone firm but concerned.

"Hey, come on, ladies. Let's not—" Bumi started, but before he could finish, Lin’s legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor.

Izumi was at her side in an instant, pulling her into a comforting embrace. "This is all my fault," Lin choked out between sobs. "If I hadn’t ended things with him… now he’s…"

Kya and Suyin joined in, wrapping their arms around Lin, offering silent support as she cried. But Suyin, ever the blunt one, asked, "It’s just a wedding announcement, you know." She sighed, "If you love Tenzin that much, then why didn’t you ask him back sooner??"

Lin looked at her, tears streaming down her face. "I tried," she whispered. "I sent letters, I called, I even visited the air temples myself." Her voice broke as more tears fell. "But they said he doesn’t want to see nor speak to me anymore."

Everyone froze, shocked by what they were hearing. None of them knew about this.

"What? Why didn’t you tell us?" Bumi asked, his voice full of concern. "We could’ve helped you."

"I... I was the one who ended things with him," Lin admitted, her voice trembling. "So… I wanted to make things right myself."

Kya shook her head in disbelief. "I can’t believe Tenzin, that jerk."

Lin's voice cracked as she continued, "I thought I’d moved on, that I was fine with it, but the tears… they won’t stop. I love Tenzin... I love him… What do I do?...I still love him.." she sobbed, her shoulders shaking as she let out all the pain she’d been holding in.

So there you have it. I honestly enjoyed the frick outta this show. It’s very different, there are a lot of changes (some I don’t like but can live with and others that I love), and if you’re only gonna watch it to compare it to the original series and not as a completely different thing, then you’re probably gonna hate it. And that’s okay, just don’t hate on those of us who enjoyed it. Let us enjoy it!

The latest chapter is giving me hints about the Cave of Two Lovers episode. Here me out.

It’s the fact that Zuko and Aang were both in a snowy tundra of a cave and they only had a limited amount of fire left, similar to Aang and Katara in the original from that episode. Honestly, even though Aang and possibly Zuko haven’t reached that point of understanding where they are on their feelings for each other, I would totally understand at the spur of the moment, a few seconds before Katara and Sokka showed, Aang would have kissed him regardless. Considering all the pent up stress and emotions going on since Zuko went missing and the situation at hand. He wouldn’t even be thinking clearly, and honestly would make things more complicated in the near future. I mean, if Katara and Aang DID kiss in the cave, we didn’t really get an establishment afterwards, just a sense of affirmation.

If only Katara and Sokka had waited a few more seconds

I wasn't even actively thinking about the parallels to the Cave of Two Lovers when I wrote that scene, but maybe it was in my subconscious while I was working on it, because it makes a lot of sense now that you mention it lol.

I'm definitely going to touch on that moment a bit in the next chapter, or at at least Aang's thoughts on it since we didn't get to see his POV in that cave scene, so stay tuned :)

I thought I’d do a liveblog reaction to the ATLA live action so this is just a chaotic stream of my thoughts as I watch. Spoilers ahead (fyi I’m going to be tagging these as “atla stream of consciousness”)

Episode 1 (Part 1)

The fire nation theme already got me excited lol.

Earthbending CGI is slightly sketchy. You can tell firebending got the whole budget

Firelord Sozin doesn’t have enough gravitasse imo. Like the music is out evil-ing him.

Oh shit they are getting graphic.

“Which is why we have to kill them all” that’s very on the nose.

I don’t recognize anyone bending in the intro but it looks cool (who’s narrating though?-they’re not doing a good job)

AANG IS SO CUTE I CAN’T!!

I know people have complained about him being able to fly but it doesn’t really bother me. New universe, some new rules can apply (within reason).

“There may come a day where you wish you had spent more time with your teachers” THAT’S SO CRUEL (specifically cruel to me).

“Great comet festival” all I thought of was the musical.

I can see the Tibetan influences more evidently in the Air Nomads that’s cool.

Aang and Gyatso are so sweet omg!

I need to rewatch The Storm but does Aang know he’s the avatar or not in the original? Gyatso telling him feels new to me.

Edit: I’ve been told that he does find out but months before he runs away, and the thing that sets him off is being told to leave (thanks @ragnarssons !) For me it makes a little more sense the original way but I don’t deeply care.

Gordon’s delivery on “I never asked to be special” OKAY THIS KID CAN ACT.

This Aang and Gyatso scene has me emotional wow. Do more of this and less burning people.

I already knew that Aang didn’t run away and I get streamlining some stuff but I do think it was a pretty core trait to change and having him be slightly more morally grey would have been more interesting, especially because his monologue was already leading there.

The Fire Nation people do not need to say “we’re gonna kill everyone” so many times. Do they think we don’t understand?

Airbending CGI looks pretty good too.

I get why they’re showing people burning and it makes sense I just really have trouble watching it.

In terms of showing the Air Nomad genocide, I can understand why they did it. When you’re doing a reimagining, especially with the tonal shift, it’s good to have a new beginning or a new something to set yourself apart from the original. It’s a different story and that’s okay. That being said, I don’t like how gruesome everything is. I feel like a lot of the same fear factors could be achieved without showing everyone (especially Gyatso) burning, and it feels like it’s violence for the sake of shock value trying to be edgier or something (I also don’t like gruesome stuff generally so that may be me).

Sure! For context this was supposed to kind of tie together this post about Sokka and disability and these posts (and a ton more like it) about the issues and trauma he's always dealt with and how he would be after the war. We see a lot (including from me) about Sokka helping Zuko through some stuff after the war, but it's time to flip the tables

So this was meant to be Sokka learning how to be vulnerable and accept help from others and we would have seen some cute scenes of Zuko taking care of him on his bad days, like using his firebending to heat Sokka's leg, omg

anyway im rambling again. i didnt get to a LOT of the cute stuff before this got too long and out of hand and begged to be abandoned but here are three of my favorite dialogue scenes I'd written

Episode 3 thoughts: 

Having Jet and the mechanist in one episode was a risk that didn’t entirely work, but is something I am impressed with. I would NOT have written these episodes together, but I think it's a pretty interesting take. It really pits Katara and Sokka against each other in a very interesting way, whilst placing Aang in a middle ground. 

I mean I HATE that they go “omg…you are the bad guy” like NO REALLY. But also like…assigning BAD and GOOD to people through just SAYING they are is soooo odd. Like no thanks. Let US work that out, have Katara be betrayed and hurt, not her just casually calling him a bad dude. 

Oh also the no bending zuko vs aang fight? Pretty interesting it showed Dallas’s tallents with martial arts in a really fun way because I could actually see it beyond the fire bending! PLUS the use of props in the fighting was fun! Zuko breaking that stick off and using it, Aang defending with the plates and baskets, it was all really dynamic! Oh plus zuko being hit by a broom. Oh and then the fights in the carpet drapes!?that was filmed interestingly (though the music was…a choice). 

Katara and Sokka riding the postal delivery carts up to the castle was a cute throw back to the original show, and also interestingly explored omashus own culture and how it can be used in ‘fights’. It was a neat addition rather than just walking there. 

 “You have my notebook” is such an odd line. I wish they went into more detail as to WHY this notebook is so important in the first few episodes because currently it means literally nothing. Like it seems to hold a log of his journey? Or his knowledge of the avatars? But like…a little more depth please! Cuss it IS interesting to know that Zuko put EFFORT into his research and it’s almost funny that he’s the one that teaches aang parts of what past avatars have done. Like its very comical! And Zuko losing it over it being missing is even more funny. 

Iroh unironically going “for the fire nation” was….a choice. And not a good one in my opinion. Especially since it FEELS like they are planning on keeping the white lotus plot line (they did show Iroh buying a lotus tile) so for him to so casually do that it just feels odd. Like him protecting zuko? Normal. Him doing that??? eeehhhhhhh.

Okay so I have watched like, three Avatar live action episodes so far and here are some quick thoughts on it. (Spoiler alert this is a positive post, negativity DNA unless you want to make me sad)

- Right off the bat it should be noted that my standards for good tv / movies are pretty low these days. Due to the general state of tv / movies, I have been forced to place the bar of acceptability at « I can see what is happening on the screen and the character’s costumes have colours ». NATLA passes both criterias with flying — well, colours.

- Secondly I actually like the way the show handles the character arcs. I feel like people who are complaining just noticed that they changed or toned down some aspects of the character arcs, and were so angry that they straight up stopped paying attention instead of noticing all the new and nuanced things that were added in. Every character is getting an interesting and intriguing storyline, they just don’t look exactly the same as in the original. If that makes you froth at the mouth, may I suggest not watching any adaptation ever maybe? Because huh that’s kind of what adaptations do.

- Unfortunately the pacing is kinda clunky and some of the dialogue is irritating, especially the recurrent thing where a character who would usually prefer to die before speaking about their feelings — or wouldn’t have the emotional maturity to even realize what they are feeling — just turn to the camera and loudly announce « I am feeling this thing! ». However, those two issues are obviously a result of not enough episodes. They had to cram A LOT in eight episodes and that is Netflix’s fault, not the showrunner’s. With eight episodes they basically had the choice between not having the time to properly « show not tell » and therefore having to cut out the character’s more subtle emotional states entirely, or try to work in conversations and monologues in which the characters just straight up say things to each other. So you get Aang telling Appa he’s scared of being the avatar and Zuko actually admitting out loud that he has hope that he might get to go home. It is what it is.

- They clearly ran out of money for wigs tho. Gran-gran’s wig is horrendous and the only thing I cannot forgive.

- Aside from some clunky pacing and gran-gran’s wig tho, everything else has slapped so far. Sokka is PERFECT. Suki was great too. Sad that they didn’t put Sokka in the full Kyoshi warrior getup but it does create an unintentionally hilarious moment where the kyoshi people are all like « um no we don’t have any outsiders in our village, no sir mister fire soldier » and meanwhile this idiot is just standing there all dressed in BLUE

- Aang is also perfect. Zuko is perfect. Katara is doing that thing where you bottle up all your anger inside and never make it anyone else’s problem and just keep smiling and being nice and polite and then you die, which unfortunately seems to make people think she just has no anger? Lmao okay.

- the cgi was hit and miss in the first episode but then got a lot better

- the fight choreographies are ON POINT OMG

thoughts on atla live action. spoilers below. anyway it’s a 7/10 for me. good but… could have been better.

thank you netflix for making a colorful show with lots of lighting so I can see what’s happening on screen!!!!!!!!!

the actors were good, the music was good, the graphics and effects were (mostly) good

the pacing was bad. and it’s partially because of. you know. 20 episodes shrinked into 8

Omg same though, i was all about zutara growing up! Recently, my bf saw atla for the first time, and I was watching it with him (its been years, it was so fun!)

I guess back then I was kinda using katara as a self insert?? Haha I just had the biggest crush on zuko 😭

But watching it again recently idk I found this new appreciation for kataang, and aang especially! I just think aangs so charming and cute? 🥴

Like the headband episode? I mean, come on! Gahhh that episode made a kataang stan (the near kiss, and the way they look at each other at the end of the dance 🥺). Also that last atla comic had such a cute art style, and the kataang stuff was adorable!

Yay love seeing people relate to the post I posted about becoming a Kataang shipper during my re-watch of ATLA 😘 (you can read it here if you haven’t already).

Firstly, yesss, watching ATLA is still fun after years. Ngl I think when I was younger (mostly because Netflix wasn’t really big), I watched Avatar but not thoroughly. It was more like, if the episode is on the TV, I’m going to watch it. I might have missed an episode or I’d have to wait till next week to see the next episode. This is compared to when I got older and I could do a full binge watch of the whole thing on Netflix (which I recommend 😉).

Secondly, haha I soooo relate to crushing on Zuko. Honestly, still do lol (literally have you seen what he looks like in the comics!?! I didn’t know his hair could get better than season 3 but 😍). And yeah, definitely understand using Katara as a self-insert for the Zuko love 😂. Love an enemies to lovers!!!

Aww yes, I don’t think I paid much attention to Aang when I was younger (other than him being the main character lol) because of how much I loved Zuko. But truly, every single character is so amazing that they all deserve the same amount of love and attention 🥹.

THAT DANCE!! I don’t know what’s in the air at the Fire Nation but Aang was too smooth. After watching that episode, my standards went up by 5000%. I feel like that might have been the episode on my rewatch that made me think a bit differently about Kataang. I think prior to that I was still fully on the Zxtara (going to x the ship name out again in case shippers don’t want to see this xx) train but then that episode happened and I thought this is fricking cuteeee (then of course proceeded to rewatch again).

I’m so happy they’re giving us more adult Gaang content!! So so excited for that movie 😍 and all the Kataang content to come.

Yeah, and on your final point, I do remember lots of Aang hate from some shippers (I do think there might still be some even now). Definitely not saying all Zxtara shippers hate Aang (and definitely don’t think that was what anon was implying)!!! I do think it was a small minority who were probably just trying to find an excuse to hate Aang but I have seen many Zxtara shippers who absolutely adore Aang which always makes me happy because he is a sweet sunshine who deserves all the love and appreciation ☺️.

I just found that rewatching ATLA has made me ship Kataang as well. Perfectly fine if you favour one ship over the other! I’ve just found love for both :)

So…about that Captured AU? 👀

Nothing quite says 'spring/summer 2020' like an intense and sudden atla relapse amiright.

Anyway. The Captured AU.

Immediately after the failed invasion, Sokka ends up separated from the group and gets captured. Since he's been ID'd as the idea guy behind the invasion plan, he gets sent to Boiling Rock prison and has, as the poet's say, A Bad Time since Azula wants answers about where the Avatar is. Unknown to Sokka, Zuko's defected and comes across Aang, who has doubled-back to see if he can track down where Sokka ended up. Zuko and Aang end up staging the jail break to save Sokka as Zuko's initial 'joining the Gaang' adventure. Guest stars Suki and Hakoda are also along for the ride, along with soon-to-be-defectors Mai and Ty Lee, with angst for everyone all around.

In the snip below, Azula just got done with questioning Sokka, with Hakoda there to put pressure on both of them, and Sokka's given a fake location for Aang et al, and as a "reward" they're given a couple of minutes alone.

Under a cut because it's a lil long:

Hakoda’s launching himself forward before the door is fully closed, falling to his knees in front of Sokka and reaching out for him. Sokka can’t help it. The reaction is out of his control--the pulling back, the curl in on himself, the small and afraid whine that works out of his throat. But Hakoda’s hands cup Sokka’s face gently, thumbs moving over Sokka’s cheeks. That hurts more, somehow, than the pain his body had braced for by someone moving so closely so quickly. Hakoda says, “Sokka--”

“It’s okay,” Sokka whispers. His voice shakes. “It’s okay. I didn’t--Aang’s--”

Hakoda shushes him, another swipe of his thumbs. Sokka leans into the touch. “They’ll be listening,” Hakoda says, voice wavering as much as Sokka’s. “But that’s good. You did a good thing.”

Hakoda’s crying and not trying to hide it. Sokka can’t talk around the sudden lump in his throat. Hakoda lets go of Sokka’s face to put one hand on Sokka’s arm, the other to the back of Sokka’s neck, pulling him into a loose hug, careful not to jostle any hurting places. Sokka drops his head to his dad’s shoulder and tries to get his breathing in order. 

“You’re doing so well,” says Hakoda. 

Which is wrong. Sokka isn’t doing well at all. He’s been left behind and caputred and messed everything up, just like he messed up the invasion. Just like he messes up everything. They’re both going to die here because Sokka wasn’t smart enough, fast enough, good enough, and he can’t talk around that knot in his throat, not even to apologize for messing all of this up so badly, all because he thought he could handle this when he can’t.

“I’m so proud,” Hakoda says, and Sokka wants to ask why.
