my top bit of advice going into the new year: compliment people. especially strangers. literally everyone you interact with if you can. when you buy coffee in the morning compliment the barista's tattoos. when you're chatting with a coworker tell them that by the way you like their outfit. always find something they've chosen to do on purpose. nail polish, jewellery, tattoos, hair colour/style, statement accessory, outfit, etc are all good bets. things people hope will be noticed. things that aren't too personal so it doesn't make them uncomfortable (eg probably not their physical features). i've gotten into the habit of scanning everyone i talk to for something about them that i think is cool so i can tell them. it's a great habit because it makes me notice people and realise just how many neat little details there are in people's presentation of themselves that might pass me by if i wasn't paying attention. and it brings out so much joy. you'd be surprised how much it disarms people to receive an unexpected compliment from someone they don't know. it is the most sincere smile you will see all day long. it feels nice to make people happy but it also means you win the social interaction. establish dominance by complimenting a stranger's earrings and disappearing into the fog

Reese didn't really know any other vampires. There were the other suckers that had been transformed against their will, but most of them had fled. She wasn't sure everyone had survived after Mr. Knight had stopped the scheme from continuing. They could be anywhere really - they weren't in a WhatsApp group, and she wasn't there keeper. Point being? She really didn't know any other vampires.

Was there things she ought to know but didn't because she'd been turned only a matter of months?

Bad enough the former vegan had to start drinking blood. But there were ways to do that without the human element. Blood donations were a thing. Sure people didn't think their blood was being donated to help her but it was saving her life, right?

She wrinkled her nose, looking over at the woman. Uncertain. Unsure. A bit on edge. And actually a little amused. Look, if that was standard clothing to join the super-cool vampire club she would PASS. Anyways, what had she been saying? Right, fighting or some threat. Made sense considering they'd ended up assisting one another in whaling on someone.

"If it's something bugging the neighbourhood, I'm happy to help." Part of the Mission, right? Help those out around her. Do some good. "I didn't realise there was any major issues. Uh, like, supernatural issues going on. Just the usual creeps." Mr. Knight wasn't here, but Reese was. And she was just as good. And being on edge meant she had a lot of adrenaline to burn off (did vampires even get adrenaline? she'd think on that later. or ignore the thought). "If you don't mind a tag-along, I'd like to help."

I’m never going to buy the “Elain is a spoiled rotten child” interpretation that I see floating around fandom. To me, Elain is a chronic people pleaser.

She desires to please everyone around her at the expense of herself. It is why she so desperately wants to be seen. She is deeply unhappy. Symbolically, Elain is described as a trembling fawn because she is frozen like a deer in headlights in the face of what she wants vs performing what other’s expect of her.

She does this because she is suffering from self worth issues and does not believe her needs or wants are important—and that she doesn’t possess value beyond her complacency and her superficial beauty.

In fact, I believe her book is going to be about becoming selfish. I HOPE it’s about finally becoming MORE SELFISH, which she has never afforded herself to be. I hope she’s selfish and leaves the cage of limitations that has been created for her in the Night Court. I hope she’s selfish and chooses love and a mating bond because she wants it. I hope she’s selfish enough to finally put herself first in order to become the strong and brave female character she was always destined to be.
