wolf guys name is iza (izayah) and braid guy is tay!!

iza is one of the minor characters but still appears often for comedic relief if u wanna call it that. he and his partner (mephisto) are part of the suits who organize/run the game (therefore theyre on no good or evil side but neutral ground) and theyre dubbed "cleaners" - their task is basically "getting rid" of rulebreakers (iza doesnt like his job). tay is part of the main trio and a participant of the game, on abels (pink glasses guy) side. hes taking care of the van, bike, anything other breakable (hes skilled w his hands when it comes to engines and all that stuff)

since theyre part of the suits, iza and mephi should be impartial and not help either side to victory.......they dont so they wont break any rules but considering iza is abels biggest fan its kinda clear who theyre secretly rooting for. tays favorite person are both his besties (abel and mars, the blue haired girl)

funnily enough, considering his role, iza is terribly scared of horror etc and a big enjoyer of romance (he cries a lot) and musicals (hes not very talented but a passionate singer nonetheless) or anything action (its just so cool) - on the contrary, tay enjoys splatter and creepy horror and abel and mars dont rlly know whats scarier, the kinda stuff he can watch unfazed or his cute friendly smile he keeps on wearing while watching (its always the seemingly pure, innocent ones huh.../j)

| • its not rare for mephistopheles to feel left out when around you . after all ,, you did have pacts with all the avatars and were more than acquainted with two angels ,, a reaper ,, one of the wisest and strongest humans the human realm had to offer and were chummy with diavolo and barbatos .

| • it did make him question why you hung around him some days . he didnt mean much ,, just the son of a wealthy noble family within devildom . he may have known diavolo as a child ,, but it wasnt the same . it never felt the same ,, especially after lucifer had shown up in devildom .

| • what did you see in him ? compared to everyone else you knew ,, he wasnt much to you . at least ,, thats how he felt and what he thought . somehow ,, you saw more than just his wealth and title . you saw more of him ,, his interests and dislikes .

| • he didnt think of himself as that interesting ,, but he never let it get to him . though the fact you two were in a relationship meant more to him than you'd every know .

| • days turning to weeks that slipped into months of pining after you . money spent on gifts to give ,, only to be shoved into your hands as he looked away to hide his desire in his eyes ,, mumbling something about how he saw it and thought a human like mightve wanted it or whatever excuse he could fish out .

| • so mephistopheles understood that you get busy . after all ,, being apart of the exchange student program while being a student council member and doing your best to keep the brothers (namely mammon) in line was tiring . and ontop of it all was a shift you usually worked with mammon to help him with his debts . anything to get him to start working towards having less bills and debts to pay off .

| • he knew you worked hard ,, but it didnt stop his mind from being plagued with not the nicest thoughts . he couldnt stop himself from wandering if youre purposely taking on more work to keep yourself busy and away from him . was it true ? he hoped it wasnt ,, but he wouldnt be surprised . he wasnt as interesting as the seven brothers were . nor did he have money or power like diavolo and barbatos ,, or solomon . he was far from being holy and pure like raphael and simeon . he wasnt as funny or affectionate as thirteen either ,, he knew that .

| • but every time you would text him an apology ,, he couldnt help but bite the vile feeling in his heart . how it clenched in his chest whenever he would read the message and reply with reassurance that it was okay . even if it didnt feel okay .

| • it didnt help with how he would see one of the brothers clinging to you in the halls the next day . how you seemed to go unaware of his sorrows ,, yet it would be rude to march up and demand your attention ,, relationship or not .

| • at least ,, you werent aware of it until you dropped by the newspaper club room with a gift in hand for your lover . you realized you had gotten busy and carried away ,, barely seeing him in the halls and missing his texts when he'd send them during class or work .

| • a small treat from madame scream's and some matching jewelry you had saved up for held close to your torso as you opened the door ,, eyes catching mephistopheles as a smile curled on your lips .

| • you would apologize for neglecting him ,, presenting him with your gifts as you awaited for a response . it took him a few moments to realize the situation ,, emerald eyes wide with emotion and heart beating frantically within his chest .

| • a pout formed on his lips ,, standing up from his chair and pulling you into his embrace . his arms snug around you ,, trying to prevent himself from showing anymore weakness than he already was . especially in r.a.d. where anyone could walk in and see how vulnerable he was .

| • " thank you my dear ." he whispered ,, pressing a kiss to your head and opening the present box . inside were two necklaces ,, resembling hearts and two different letters on each one . a 'm' on one for his name ,, and another to match the first letter of your name . intertwined together ,, he unraveled the necklaces from each other ,, witnessing the half heart they made when taken apart .

| • “ i can help you put it on !” you offered with a smile ,, hand held out . he placed his half in your palm ,, leaning down to let you put it on . he shivered slightly when the cold metal brushed against his warm neck ,, your hands rustling lightly against his hair as you clipped it on .

okkkk its been a day or two, gonna talk abt funy warptrain event ^_^ i didnt think i would but ihave thoughts and im chatty. notmany, but what ever. my house. yipy ^_^

honestly? wholly neutral abt this one. it sure was an event ! woah.

more genuinely, i mostly just think it couldve taken its environment+happenstance and made it hit harder. isuppose its just a side effect of Already Knowing, both in-universe and out, but the whole Everything felt very secondary to the character's.. characters. which isnt bad! its just specifically how it was Executed that kinda gets me about it.

specifically, in that it feels like its going to be much more important than it actually ended up presenting itself. nuance nuance, side chapter event, etc etc but even Still. what we got from the characters felt very very Mild, even from side-stuff pov. (again nuance, im not fully caught up, im simply talking about how i feel.) which may be a side effect of riding off th coattails of tkt wrt rodya having... All That. it felt like all that stuff w faust just Happened, and well. thats it! the most we got from it was dante+faust's brief dynamic, and yisang's comment towards the end. which was sweet and i liked a lot! i just wish they pushed the wound a little harder. juuust a little. give us (read: them) something to think about, rather than hint and drop.

ithink my main problem with the writing, specifically character writing, is how... sitcom-ish it ended up feeling, for lack of a better term. it felt very blatant in its winkwink nudge kind of execution of dialogue, specifically with the sinners re: faust's de-faust-ening. like its not Awful, but it did kinda take me out of it a bit. (though they didnt push that execution of it as far as they couldve, which i Am thankful for)

it Is very much a kind of hinty setup deal, but man. really really light on that one. the reconnection on mephi Was necessary plotwise, but i wont say i didnt feel at least a Little disappointed. let them struggle!!

(i think what i was more hoping for was exemplifying more strongly on the "This Is Objectively A Pressing Problem, But One We Cant Solve Just Yet" front. the 'we rely on Faust too much' was a little dip into it, but again, very light. i want to see them Objectively Kind Of Fuck Up about it. Really press those implications to give us something to be worried about when we Do address faust proper. yknow?)

and, admittedly, th thing that bothered me most was the keycard melting. that was the whole Ordeal! the pressure all kinda hinged on that being an Important Item! but then they just kind of all.. "oh no the keycard :( well, time to get on mephi its all cool ^_^" like... yall couldve done that th whole time? it really defangs the entire situation. both in-text and kind of retroactively. (which is something i could chatter on about, but i dont think id do it well, so i wont.)

like yeah, silly silly, but again. it does kinda make the tone go all over the place in a way that felt really jarring to me.

(also this is very very blatantly my own Immense Bias but its still my house; there is inevitably going to be a Lot of faust-angela comparisons/etc coming i can feel it in my Bones and iam inevitably going to be very Very bitchy about it. sorry about this in advance, but ive already said my piece re: rodya/ishy's realization egos and the same sentiment applies here. i am going to be Immensely picky about it and id apologize but you all know what im about. thats all.)

im wholly indifferent but Mildly Fond of team bloodfiend just on principle of Theyre Fun And Interesting. in the way where i wish we could delve into the implications of their dynamic (them making a fun little home on th warp trains is interesting!!!) but th nature of th story means we wont be able t see it. sad :( cmooon theyre just little guys cmon be niceys to them come onnnnn.

what Really shone this chapter for me though, surprise surprise, was donqui. she was FANTASTIC this event and its everything i couldve ever asked for, even with the bias aside. mmmmostly aside. i am easy to please on that front. i loved getting to see her be excited and Important to the group and not just brushed aside re: the beginning!! her and meur getting to genuinely just be silly!! (this one Is my bias speaking but also heath + don friendship win. in my heart.) also the bit where she gets to just... talk herself up in front of th kid. she was genuinely so happy and proud! it lets her Actually shine without dimming it with the "ah there goes donqui again, dont mind her" thing. which is intrinsic to her character, and i wont say is strictly bad, but im glad to see just Her. (Especially shoutout to the "she hesitated till the last second attacking the passengers" thing, that was a great detail for both her And faust)

but my Favorite thing by Far was the gap between the end of the bossfight and What Happened On Mephi. girl KILLING!!! girl MAIMING!!! getting to see her really push at her values and show off that part of her was Fantastic. the sheer stubborn vitriol was Excellent; and her standing by her own values even Past her own physical limits is Such a great way to exemplify that character trait. and most importantly, her direct decision to pretty much just ignore the direction to stay behind following her own morals was!! fantastic fantastic. Deeply delighted when she entered the scene again on mephi. i love seeing her be silly and excited. but what i love more is seeing that part of her. i want to see her be a Fucking Problem! a Serious Fucking Problem! she deserves it.

i cant... really say much on the uh, reveal at the end though. i probably wont, either! that'll have t be for the next canto. but im holding. im waiting. that is probably one of the funniest things they couldve pulled and i so desperately want to see what the fuck theyre going to do with it. let them cook or whatever. absolutely Not the direction i thought they were gonna focus on, but huh. This is going to be very biased and based off of my memories.

SO!! Teaching Darkness by Rae Logan is a long series focused around an AU version of Mephiles the Dark. In this AU, he made a last-ditch effort to survive by possessing Shadow. It Did Not Work Very Well™ but Stuff Happened™ that cumulated in him getting his own body, and seemingly removing The Dark from him. Back in my day it was the most popular fanfiction on fanfiction.net about Mephiles.

Of course, that was just the beginning.

In the next installments, we start getting into the real juicy stuff. I won't spoil any of it, but suffice to say The Dark is not done with Mephy, and he does not appreciate the adorable marshmallow of a precious cinnamon roll that he's become. Shadow struggles to reconcile Mephy with the monster he used to be. Rouge just wants everyone to be okay. This naturally leads ✨found family✨ and fluffiness. What follows is a glorious amount of psychological exploration, humour, drama, fluff, violence, and enough angst to feed two of me. It put stars in my eyes when I read it for the first time. My favourite entry in the series is Flux.

It's a very long read, but if you love Mephiles, you'll probably love everything about it. I won't even start on why Dark is my favourite OC to ever exist, you can find that out for yourself.

My explanation can't do this series justice. It changed my life. It's the late 2000's and early 2010's in a bottle. Rae Logan is my favourite writer to ever exist and I always hope they're doing well and thriving. They moved away from the series quite awhile ago, I believe partly due to religious family putting pressure on them for writing about demonic characters, but what they've written is solid gold. And they still channel that awesomeness through lots of Darkwing Duck fics, which makes me so happy!

Obey Me! Nightbringer "Trick or Treat!" Pop Quiz

My thoughts on the Halloween 2023 event!

It was my first year doing a HDD time pop quiz and it did not disappoint! I’m not sure if they have the same Halloween costumes every year (that would not surprise me), but Beel and Bel’s really stood out to me! They are so cute yet Beel’s also feels really sexy! The other character outfits weren't bad, but just didn’t interest me as much. MC’s costume was not specified I don’t think? Which is always appreciated.

Even tho Beel was really pulling me in I felt like I had to follow Bel because he was the one that technically asked. 

Learning about Devildom (and surrounding domains) flora, fauna and food is one of my favorite parts of the game because they are so wild. Barbatos + Diavolo teaching you about the one-eyed chameleon filled that need. And it becomes our little shoulder friend TwT

Barbatos: “It changes its colouring to blend in with its surroundings, leaving only its eyeball visible. As a result, people do tend to mistake it for a wandering oculus.”

I really loved the Halloween Cafe theme! It's something I would attend if it was in my area and I love making specialty foods/drinks for myself so doing it with the OM family was awesome! You see a lot of themed cafes for school festivals in anime + manga. 

Later on when we are making recruitment posters:

MC: “Wow Barbatos. That…is a very realistic drawing.”

Barbatos: “While it may frighten some viewers…” 

I could hear the warning that plays after tv commercials in my head xD Also the poster drawings made me think of me and my sister prepping halloween treat bags, drawing little creatures on them. Very comfy vibes :3 A troublesome kitty gets involved leaving lil footprints of paint everywhere! So cute!

Its cute monsters showed up for the interviews, perfect Halloween interaction, but… no monster sprites :( So sad. Please Solmare make npc sprites! Or at least some new/special backgrounds. The sprites don’t need to be detailed, but it would have made the scenes with monsters so much better!

The monsters included were; mummy, skeleton, zombie and pumpkin spirit.

Does a pumpkin spirit just look like a see through pumpkin? Or like a genshin Seelie?

I did like there was a few interactions with the monsters; Mammon becoming friends with the mummy. The skeleton trying to help lift heavy things, but falls apart. The spirit drawing a face on the pie in secret while we were baking (Yay to Asmo joining us in the kitchen!).

And then there's Barbatos hilarious and painfully relatable situation of being pursued by the zombie. Poor guy is continuously asked out (then proposed to) by a co-worker he has no interest in but can’t fire them because they are a good worker. A horrible situation to be in, but great plot wise. Barbatos always ends up in strange situations like that.

Has selective hearing and only hears the trick part of trick or treat, luckily she is stopped before ruining cafes xD

Still don’t know how he can eat Solomon’s cooking without dying.

Micheal gives me helicopter parent vibes ‘I must make sure my son is looking proper on this occasion!’ or ‘I really hope he looks horrible, he can’t look better than me.’ But fr he must really miss his brothers TwT

When the monsters started to surround everyone and wanted to force us to be friends I was like “Noooo we can be friends normally! Friends don’t hold other friends hostage!” Then after they lost the games we had to do all the work at the cafes T_T. They even gave us trick candy later…

Very glad Beel offered to help Luke in the pumpkin rolling. Always nice to see Beel being assertive :3

While Diavolo has been in the Devildom longer then Satan  and have more hands on experience I feel Satan has done more in depth research so would know the bone structures better. And I was correct!

Poor boy was having a hard time interacting with customers, but apparently he was feeling some kind of way! What was that?! Also this might have been our first nightbringer kiss :0 i’m sure it looked awkward as hell. (Lil sidebar - my MC has been hesitant to be intimate with Levi knowing he doesn't know their true feelings for him.)

Very simple interaction, but very sweet.

Diavolo: “In that case, allow me to give you some sweets. It’s some chocolate that i’ve gotten somewhat addicted to lately. I hope that you’ll enjoy it, too.”

MC basically says this last part to Diavolo in the fic I posted for his birthday xD

Really appreciate that they acknowledged Diavolo’s birthday. More flashbacks to my fic reading this scene. 

We also got to see Little D No.2 in this story! I felt so bad for him tho! Was so worried Thirteen would make him miss the cafe, so glad he didn’t! That lil guy deserves so much love <3 he works so hard!

All the cards were beautiful! Beel and Bel UR cards were so well done! I only got “Halloween Presents SSR” but it's the first time I've got any event card so I'm super happy about it!

Overall very pleased. This story was pretty well put together! Hope to see this quality at least for pop quizzes going forward <3

its honestly funny that he claims we can come back to visit whenever we want when in the og app diavolo specifically states we cant do that, due to the unstable relationship between worlds (and also maybe the devildom being inherently unsafe for humans?)

Bruce groaned. Perhaps Miss da Vinci or Mash would have something helpful to say. Bruce stood up— it was a little bit of a struggle, what with all the macaroni and cheese from last night— and shuffled awkwardly to the Command Room.

“Ah, Bruce! Good to see you. Something actually just caught our eye.”

“Let me guess. Minute Singularity?”

Mash nodded. “Mhm! It’s strange, though. We’re getting multiple readings as to the location and time period, some changing by the second.”

“However,” da Vinci added, “there’s one rough range that has been showing up more than others: 19th century Germany.”

“Oh. Oh, hell.”“Hell indeed~, honighase.”

Bruce shot up a foot into the air. Turning around, she saw that she’d been followed.

“A-are you mad, Mephy?”

“Feheh. Mad? I wouldn’t go that far, string bean.”

The clown patted their Master on the head.

“Ahem. You can pin a name to your emotions later, Mephistopheles,” da Vinci piped up. “Since this Singularity apparently can’t settle on one time or location, we’ve dubbed it a ‘shapeshifter Singularity,’ and have prepared a special Mystic Code that shall help Bruce Rayshift smoothly. For the sake of your Servants, she’ll have to go alone first. Once we verify her existence, then she can call for you.”

Bruce sighed. “Fine. Lay it on me, da Vinci.”

Bruce stood in the doorway, scowling.

“I think you look good in those colors, Senpai.”

“Mash, please don’t call me that.”

“Oh, um, sorry, Senpai.”

Bruce rolled her eyes, not willing to put further effort into this line of conversation. Fortunately, her knight in sexy-yet-garish armor saved her from that.

“I think you look good in green, shortstack!”

Bruce wrapped her arms around herself subconsciously.

“I like the scarlet sweater, but… a dress? Really? And the belt’s a little much…”

“I wouldn’t sell it short, Bruce,” da Vinci said. “I asked Miss Crane to make it for you. Since we’ve never seen a Singularity like this before, we don’t know how well its denizens will take to you if you stand out.”

The Master of Chaldea, once again, couldn’t be bothered to argue.

“Whatever. Let’s just get the Rayshift over with so I can safely reunite with Mephy in this… ‘shapeshifter Singularity.’ Unless you don’t want to, mein teufel?”

“Nah, nah, I’m fine.”

Rayshifting always made Bruce feel cold. The sunlight that greeted her, however, was warm and almost inviting, although the air itself was still foreign to her. The air smelled of fresh bread and sawdust.

Opening her eyes, Bruce saw that she was standing in the middle of a dilapidated street. Near-identical buildings filled her vision, distinguished only by color and easily missable signs. Only now did the sounds of footsteps reach Bruce’s ears, and her heart rate soared.

“Gotta hide, gotta hide, get out, get out, get out!” Bruce thought.

She turned around and dashed into the nearest building, a store built entirely out of dark wood.

Bruce’s eyes darted around the room, taking in her surroundings. The place looked more rustic and homely than the other buildings, with a series of glass flasks lined up along one wall and a couple of stoves along the other, each one in a different corner with a sign above it. Bruce crept over to the one in the back right corner, almost as if her very presence would upset whoever was here.

“‘Tränke,’ huh? I guess Miss da Vinci was right.”

She glanced at the other stove, whose sign read “hausgebrauch.”

Bruce took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and recalled what Fuuma Kotarou had taught her.

“‘Call out to Chaldea with your mind.’ Okay. Mephistopheles, are you there?”

Bruce heard a “poof” and opened her eyes to a cloud of pink dust and her first Heroic Spirit.

“Present and accounted for, princess~! Good seven circles, I wouldn’t have lasted another minute watching you from the command room! Absolute torture!”

“W-was it really that bad?”

Mephistopheles smirked. “Just mind-numbingly boring.”

Bruce nodded.

“Well, I’m glad you’re here. Can you tell what either of these signs say?”

Mephistopheles floated haphazardly from stove to stove, snickering all the while and slamming cabinets open and shut.

“What is it, sweetie?”

“It appears you’ve found two things, sweetheart. The house of a potions master and that of a fellow sweet tooth. I mean, just look in these pantries! I might have to help myself!”

“At least wash your hands, sweetie-pie…”

One communications set-up later…

“So there’s no one in the building?”

“Not a trace of life, Mash!” Mephistopheles piped up, munching on a strawberry.

“Well,” da Vinci said, “the best thing to do next would be to ask around. And Mephistopheles, you can’t go around eating other people’s food! Shouldn’t that be obvious?”

“Nope!”

Bruce, who had been taking stock of the cabinets, turned to da Vinci’s projection and nodded before walking to the door.

“I’m coming with you, sweetheart!”

“Meph, no! What if someone gets sus—”

As Bruce swung open the door, she was interrupted by the citizen who stood outside.“Ah, you must be the new magician in Wittenberg! I must say, you’re quite a bit… smaller than I heard you’d be.”

Okay, I kinda get the Butterfly thing, but what's the deal with Centipedes?

centipedes are tied to kegare, impurity as result of death or disease. it's not a moral judgement but the natural result of amoral natural forces, but it still must be cleansed carefully to avoid inviting more death and disease. this one's a little trickier in fate cuz there's a lot of butterflies but only a few centipedes and two of the centipedes are also butterflies but it's like, whereas the butterfly dreams of being human the centipede simply lives its cursed life. the butterfly completely changes itself in hopes of "becoming something" but the centipede either has no such dream or simply no such option, it spreads impurity not because it is sinful or revels in it but because such is its existence. cu alter and vortigern also don't want to be doing what they're doing but they Gotta. you could say it's a degree of self acceptance that the butterflies lack but that of course immediately gets negated by the centipedes that are also butterflies

centipedes by being bugs still have that quality of being hard to get rid of because another one will appear to let the cycle of violence continue but they're not as fragile as other bugs because when you have a whole mass of centipedes it looks like one really long centipede that will kick your ass and wrap around your mountain until some heian warrior kills it for you so thats what cu alter and vortigern lean into to become continent scale threats. mephy can't pull that one off because he's basically just collecting symbolism that makes him look evil because he's a baby with a job and that job is to be the devil so no world destruction centipede powers for him (yet...?)

ok and with that out of the way,

i’m not even familiar with their lore. Reason why i stopped caring about the lore behind faust and mephistopheles is that an interlude happens that shows that mephistopheles is just some homunculi made by some mage nobody named faust. and even then the interlude doesn’t talk about the lore behind the novel, its just you helping mephy kill faust

that being said though i would hope the developers expand on their origins more and potentially even release a “true” mephistopheles (a girl can dream)

So, they’re not even the real deal demon known as Mephistopheles in the first place, and i can hear u going “well that’s lame” and like, no, we just need to redirect our feelings from appreciating a demon to appreciating a homunculi who has a weird characterization in the fate universe

Design tangent:

Fgo was actually my first gacha, and so when I came across this servant I kinda instantly fell in love with their design, I love the colors used in their final ascension and overall appearance. The hat that has horns but they're not quite horns, theyre these weird colorful pointy twisty things, the large garish butterfly ornament on their chest (which isnt ugly at all and somehow works so well with their everything on them) is cool, the tights are so cool to look at, i mean look -- a checkered pattern with golden lining on the shorts portion, the tits out look like yes we get it youre insane, the gloves??? purple and also cool, plus theyve got this gradient thing going on? and the fingers have this line going through them, thats so cool. actually the only other servant that comes close to this in terms of “out there” colorful designs is probably final ascension kama and qsh ( i love them both). Also, mephy has this scissor weapon?? thats so cool lol i dont see any other servant wielding giant scissors (for the love of god give mephy an animation update i need to see them use the scissors while doing flips) and they also have this bomb obsession going on? cant relate, but the bombs designs are so so cool i mean its a fucking centipede -- no idea if centipedes are a thing in the original faust but thats something Ill have to look up at some point. ALSO mephy is wearing heels oh my god anytime people wear heels is an automatic win. No clue whats going on with the hair but its kinda cute (dont question me on that) and it has curls and the hair colors are cool i mean its like a lavender thing with darker purple highlights? i love colorful things and i love people with wacky personalities so. Oh my god their tail how could i forget that its so cute and dumb i almost forgot it was there, like what is that even a whip? i dont.. but its got these little purple tips to them that are kinda cute/cool but more cool because tails are fucking up there alongside heels in terms of cool stuff on characters. and of course their fluffly cape -- again no idea what the designers were going for i mean look its a mess of a design i have no fucking idea what any of it means and i hope they explain it someday because that hair and the butterfly and the tail and the hat and the fluffy garb and a bomb obsession?? and this got the go ahead - yeah lets add that to the game like what

anyways this is me going off all about why i like their design! but we haven’t even touched the nitty gritty of it all. their personality! what personality you may ask? havent they always been some weirdo laughing a lot and saying dumb shit all the time? well yes and no

Characterization:

True to their dumb little clown design mephy also acts like one.

Some servants bond 1 lines are like “fuck off” and some actually talk to you, nah this bastard mephistopheles’ just laughing. and for the second bond line it seems to imply theyre fuckin with you more (showing up and dissapearing and saying ‘afterimage’) so thats nice that theyre actually making some effort to mess with you in a way? some servants take a long time to actually interact with you so this shows theyre not afraid of interacting with you and thats just at bond 2. and of course the third bond line implies they were probably trying to betray you, its stated in more than 1 place that mephistopheles (actually isnt this a caster class thing?) will betray you or attempt to do so. So the third bond line seems to imply that their attempts have been stopped by you and that’s what they say after some failed attempts. So after stopping this freak from doing some shit their next bond line is actually doing a confession! a jester being honest who couldve seen that one coming but theyre 100% not lying, they really arent a demon but a homunculi made by faust

speaking of faust we’re going to backtrack a little into their interlude that i brought up at the start of this post, its one of those dream interludes and it starts with mephy asking you to help him plant bombs for their eventual reuinion/showdown with faust -- in the meantime faust keeps sending golems in an attempt to kill both you and mephy

When you track faust down, it’s shown that faust was your typical mage, inhumane and uncaring. It’s also pointed out that this faust killed innocents, but this typical mage behavior is boring to mephy, and they say that boring typical behavior is why they wanted to kill them

 so i really cant blame mephistopheles for being the way they are, being raised by this type of guy, even if mephy was always messed up and wacky from the beginning its no reason for faust to attempt to kill him.

Mephistopheles also shows up in salem, cu alter’s interlude, and of course the knk crossover event, and some other things im most likely forgetting but those 3 are ones that i find notable

anytime they show up theyre actually helpful, in salem mephy points out that the nature of the being responsible for the salem epic of remnant is something alien rather than a typical foreign god, mephy also tells you that time is also being sped up and in their weird way they try to cheer you up by spouting some nonsense at the beginning (guda needed some kind of distraction from the grim events that had just transpired at that point in the story), i cant quite remember what mephy did in the knk event but they were a part of your group and were helpful the whole time, actually @/zeravmeta does an amazing analysis of their role in the knk event as well as some extra character analysis here

mephistopheles is kinda cryptic in a weird way though,

like overall i mean theyre a jester homunculi in appearance so yeah its to be expected but come on i love morally gray characters, despite their supposed betrayal hints scattered around here and there

they have this one line that always gets to me

and this line is said with a completely serious face too

the rare serious mephistopheles face! its kinda grim to see that line, no laughs, no nothing, their voice is kinda serious and monotone too. of course this could be just to get you to lower your guard but its still kinda out there that they have this rarely used portrait and that line, so i like to take it as being said to you when youre by yourself and with sincerity

and at least sei (with her wacky outfit and all lol) seems to get along with mephy and thinks theyre nice woohoo

so at the end of the day you have this guy that laughs a lot and gives mixed signals

and they fuck with you

and will most likely try to kill you more than once but hey thats just another tuesday at chaldea

Before I finish last thing I want to point out is this snippet from the fgo source material book which provides more information on servants, and this specific translated bit under mephistopheles

at the core of it all this homunculi....can be your friend! you just need to not go into despair i guess

So buckle up buddy. This is a long one. 

So uh lemme start with I still consider myself new to SWL and most of my interactions with two very nice veteran players are them explaining everything to me...then I blink twice and hope I retain some of it. Some things have stuck, some repeated interactions have boiled down to:

Them: your dps should be 10x your item power

Me: im gay and you want me to do MATHS?

I care about them, value their storytelling and patience, and I want good things to happen to both of them for the rest of their lives. 

So that utter confusion and complete chaotic panic does bleed into Maru. A lot. 

Additionally, I’m still in the Carpathian Fangs! Hopefully will be out of there soon, but I have remained almost completely spoiler free for Tokyo. So I have no idea what is going to happen and I can hear the laughter from those two players from several miles away. 

But this is the history of Maru:

-the Name: Originally, Maru was a character I played in a ttrpg called Exalted. We ended up abandoning that campaign to finish a VtM chronicle and start a new Exalted Chronicle. Maru was obsessed with demonology and researching old lore. But also a complete and utter agent of chaos. They had no gender, only a hunger for destruction of the present and renewal of lost lore. We joked in the chronicle about a play on the name Mephistopheles, a demon from the play Dr. Faustus. My name is Steph and it was a quick change to Mephistepheles. My partner also plays SWL and named his character after his Exalted character. Caesura the craftsman, who enjoyed watching Maru be themself. 

-Why Illuminati? (because i am very malleable and i wanted to be the same faction as a new friend) Here comes the headcanon. Maru was not supposed to be Illuminati. The templars took one look at that file and shredded that shit. They do not want a chaotic demolisher to be traversing their old halls in London. They will definitely get dirt and monster blood- everywhere. The Dragon looked at that file and in their best John Mulaney impersonation said,  “No no, hold back, hold back. Save it >:)” 

And then waited too long and some Triangle loving corporate ass motherfucker said, “hey kid! Hammer!” And that was a mistake. 

The two options are as follows. Either the Dragon faction looked at that ball of chaos with a hammer and thought oh this will be perfect to know whats going on inside the illuminati- or the the dice were rolled and its better for Maru to be observed as a chaotic anomaly than to be a part of the faction. Caesura, is one of the dragon faction. When my partner is able to log on and follow me around as a heal bot 3000, we started making jokes that it was Caesura’s job to check in on Maru and keep them from dying...as often. Its one of the many reasons Questions and Answers loves me. 

-Smarter than they Look...Or Head Empty Only Hammer: I have a knack for getting really really far on achievements in stealth missions on the first try, guessing the correct answers in Investigation missions (sometimes i just happen to know the answer for ?reasons?), and making my game crash by getting a fuckload of enemies to follow me at 100% aggro.

I’ve translated this to Maru as they actually do have some sort of idea of what they’re doing. But the moment you let anyone know you have a clue of what your doing- they expect more of you, or the chaotic facade is broken. Are they just skating by on pure luck and the will of the bees? Yes. Are they a skilled puzzle solver? Yes. Would they prefer to hammer through anything in their path? Yes. 

Silly but Very Accurate Headcanons:

Malicious Indecisiveness: 

-In the second choice Maru spent fifteen minutes dancing in front of the Star spawn while I went and made tea. I translated this to in-game three hours.

-I intend to do something stupid when the third choice occurs.

Maru was the one piloting the helicopter. Its their fault. They saw a friend. Video.

Maru talked to the Pharaoh the entire time through the dungeon. 

“Make A Wish” Maru: I wish you had some goddamn hand rails.

Maru played the music from Donkey Kong 64 Desert Region through most of the dungeon to annoy the Pharaoh.

Maru scaled the pyramid (via run glitch) and wrote “Aten Sux Maru Wuz Here”

“I’m not going to lose my temper. I am a calm, cool, collected individual, but when I was coming back to the Tower last night, I noticed some damage done to the interface of the building. Upon further investigation, there was water-damage, broken furnishings, and a glass everywhere. When I confronted the brothers, I got an array of different answers, and it only furthered my frustrations. I don’t know whether or not to report this to Lord Diavolo, or just let this pass and hope for the best.”

*What the Brother did in the Tower last night*

Lucifer: Lucifer was *not so surprisingly* nowhere to be found when the incident in question occurred. He returned to the tower a little later than Mephie, and was furious at the sheer amount of damage that was done to the upper portions of the tower. He assured Mephie that he would personally make sure the tower was repaired to its former glory. He then grabbed Mammon and Leviathan and dragged them down the hall, nearly kicking and screaming.

Mammon: On the night of question, he heard the scratching and mumbling again. Their ghost hunting adventure had come back as inconclusive, so now he believes that the ghost is after him in particular (he thinks it has something to do with something he may or may not have picked up in the tower). He walked up to the top of the tower, dragging Leviathan with him, but that’s all he really remembers.

Leviathan: Levi swears that something attacked them. The night is blurry, almost as if they were suffering from an extreme hangover. He remembers seeing a dark looming shadow, and it being extremely cold (which is strange because they are in the middle of a heat-wave and the tower doesn’t have the best air-conditioning). As soon as he saw the shadowy figure, Mammon grabbed him and took off. Somehow, he woke up the next morning outside and covered in glass shards.

Satan: He knew that the whole ghost hunting thing was going to be stupid, but he had to satiate his curiosity. When there was no evidence of a ghost, he returned back to his room to relax with a good book. However, he was feeling a bit… uncomfortable, so he decided to take a walk in the garden to get some air (that’s one thing he truly enjoys about the human realm… The air is so clean). While walking in the garden, he heard a large crash, and turned to see Mammon and Leviathan tumble out of one of the windows in the tower. He wasn’t shocked, but more so annoyed (Lucifer was going to have a fit), but he did take note of the ice chunks that fell to the ground as well as glass.

Asmodeus: He had been woken up by screaming. Asmo’s room is one of the closest to the top of the tower, so he could almost hear everything that they were doing. He opened his door just loud enough to tell his stupid elder brothers to shut up when he noted that the screaming sounded oddly high pitch and more panicked. He walked into the hallway to investigate, when one of the tower witches (not-so-kindly) told him to go back to bed. This started a verbal argument that lasted for nearly twenty minutes. He was (also not-so-kindly) telling the witch that she needed to watch her tone. 

Beelzebub: Although he didn’t hear damage or fighting, he did overhear a conversation in the kitchen. His favorite witch (she’s the one who cooks most of the meals), was pulled aside and told that *someone* had been scared and now there was a mess in the tower. In fact, the conversation in question went more like this; 

Witch One: “Oh no, oh no, oh no, I think someone scared A******** and now there is a problem!”

Food Witch: “A problem? Alright, I’m gonna go up there and check, you stay down here and watch the soup”.

Witch One: “Are you sure I should be watching the soup?”

Food Witch: “Well someone has to watch it, or it’ll burn.”

He then offered to watch the soup on behalf of the two frantic witches (which proved to be the best and worst option. The soup didn’t burn, but he couldn’t stop himself from tasting most of the pot). Also, he couldn’t seem to remember the name of the witch who was so frightened.

Belphegor: Belphie was taking a nap in the tower living room when he was woken up by multiple witches running into the living room in a daze. They were soaking wet, shivering, and being very loud. Belphegor is not the one to ask questions for something that he doesn’t care about, so he just got up from off of the couch and dragged himself back to his bedroom.
