"Another challenger⌠it has been ages. Perhaps you have forgotten how this game is played. Allow me to remind you."
Happy halloween fellas!!! Hermitcraft/Life SMP inscryption AU ft. Boatem gang I cooked up awhile ago but never got around to posting B-) Wild life smp has reminded me how mentally ill I am about putting these Guys in Situations so here I am
Mild to major inscryption spoilers under the cut!
For those familiar with the game, the general roles are:
Luke Carter - "Challenger"/Grian
In this AU Grian is still a trading card-based youtuber who's recording all this nonsense going down real time as in canon, but has closer ties to the GameFuna company equivalent, named "WatcherCorp". His old college roommate/best mate Jimmy went to work for them, but mysteriously passed away in a fire at their headquarters. He found the Inscryption cards in Jimmy's leftover personal belongings a few years after his death, and decided that the best way to honor him would be to make a video featuring the project he put his heart and soul into... in more ways than one.
Key difference from canon Inscryption: Grian's mind is sucked into the game of Inscryption whenever he is playing. He is able to enter and leave the game at will, but he doesn't realize this until he first dies to Leshy/Pearl and ejects himself unconsciously out of fear of dying. The only reason he realizes he isn't hallucinating is because his camcorder footage proves he actually enters the game. He obtains the "Watcher's Eye" during Act 1, which he keeps for all future acts and allows him to see things he shouldn't see as a Challenger.
P03 - "Scarred Stoat"/Scar
Despite being the one who convinces Grian and the other Scrybes to stand up against Pearl, no one seems eager to spend any more time with the conniving conman than absolutely necessary. This may have something to do with Scar's history of backstabbing and cheating both Scybes and Challengers whenever it benefits him most. Which makes it rather unfortunate that Grian is must spend time with Scar in order to gather as much information as possible.
In the beginning, Scar and Grian do not get along in the slightest. Grian finds Scar's attitude too "fake", while Scar finds Grian's "cowardice" to be irritating. At some point, the two go from passive-aggressive fighting, to a grudging truce, to more friendly, lighthearted banter. Neither person seems to trust the other, but it doesn't seem to stop the two from being â¨saddled with unnecessary feelingsâ¨. Scar's Act 3 world is much like Leshy's Act 1 world, with much more emphasis put on environmental storytelling and general Vibes than actual gameplay. Even if his game is a smokescreen for his true goal of Ascension, he feels strangely obligated to give Grian his best shot.
Scar in his proper Scrybe form appears more steampunk than canon P03. Think of a Grumbot with Scar's boatem base aesthetic and tons of missing nuts and bolts. P03's bastardous tendencies+ Scar's steampunk base made this role perfect for him.
Magnificus - "Horned Wolf"/Impulse
Impulse is a talented artist and an even more talented programmer. His future sight stems from his literal sight: His eyes are able to see read the code veil behind Inscryption, allowing him to predict likely futures based on what code is running. He often laments his status as an NPC, claiming that if he were given administrative privileges and the actual ability to modify source code he would have been able to escape Inscryption long ago.
He is rather absent in Act 2, focusing on finishing his "artwork" as soon as possible. He uses his brush to create a menagerie magical creatures with strange abilities in hopes that using one in battle might trigger a unfixable bug, allowing him to rip a hole through the source code. It is unclear whether he was able to accomplish his goal before Act 3 roles around, but it seems like Scar's method of Ascension seems awfully similar to Impulse's... perhaps a sneaky spy was able to steal Impulse's information?
As a proper Scrybe, he resembles a walking mop or a yak with overgrown fur. Most of his features are indistinguishable, save for his small horns and his glowing goat eyes.
Lemora - "Distinguished Stinkbug"/Mumbo
Mumbo is by far the most easygoing Scrybe in the cast. While he would greatly prefer an eternal slumber over yet another temporary ceasefire amongst the Scrybes, he is willing to work with the others in Act 1 simply because he finds his stinkbug form too uncomfortable to sleep in. Mumbo's goal is simple: to delete the game of Inscryption, and therefore himself, and finally rest. However, finds the constant power struggles in the world of Inscryption rather tiring and simply can't be bothered to make a grab for power himself to achieve this goal. This hasn't stopped him from asking Grian to destroy floppy disk of Inscryption. Unfortunately for him, the temptation of the o̡l̾d̡ ̜d̸a̜t̡ [REDACTED] mysteries within Inscryption are simply too powerful for Grian to resist.
As a proper Scrybe, he looks almost exactly like Mumbo's minecraft skin: A pale, mustached man with blood red eyes who resembles a vampire. Mumbo denies all vampire allegations. While he is the most "normal" looking Scrybe, Grian would still hesitate to call him "human" ...there's just something slightly off about his appearance that sets him on edge.
Leshy - "Game Master"/Pearl
Pearl is an unforgiving gamemaster that puts more emphasis on providing the player a challenge than her canon counterpart. After her self-proclaimed "tutorial", there is no more handholding and she gives Grian an absolute hellish time. Grian is only able to get a slight edge when he discovers all of the Scrybes, who provide him with stategy help to even the playing field. It is unclear whether Pearl actually enjoys running her Act 1 game or not: she seems to derive an animalistic pleasure from defeating Grian, but there are times where she seems tired and fed up with the endless gameplay loop and intentionally throws during key fights. She switches between manic and depressed at the drop of a hat.
During Act 2, she barely even tries to give Grian a challenge, allowing him to progress straight to her boss fight without any side quests to "get it over with quicker". She seems to hold a deep grudge against Scar for some reason, which is the only thing that motivates her to take action to stop him during Act 3.
Mysteriously, Grian finds a burned and unusable Unicorn card within her Act 1 cabin. Upon discovery, Scar immediately suggests that Grian leave it where he found it. Some things are best left forgotten, after all...

Writing Notes: Heraldry
Heraldry - is about showing people who you are.
In England, it started in the later 1100s, when knights began to wear helmets, and they couldn't be recognised. So they began to paint unique combinations of colours, shapes and animals, called their 'arms', on their shields and banners. Only one person was allowed to use these arms. When people saw a knight wearing them in a battle or tournament, they could tell who he was.
It is the science and the art that deal with the use, display, and regulation of hereditary symbols employed to distinguish individuals, armies, institutions, and corporations. Those symbols, which originated as identification devices on flags and shields, are called armorial bearings.
Strictly defined, heraldry denotes that which pertains to the office and duty of a herald; that part of his work dealing with armorial bearings is properly termed armory. But in general usage heraldry has come to mean the same as armory.
The Colours of Heraldry
The 5 traditional colours are, with their heraldic names:
Red = Gules
Blue = Azure
Green = Vert
Black = Sable
Purple = Purpure
Plus the two 'metals':
Gold or yellow = Or
Silver or white = Argent
There are also 'furs', the most common being:
Ermine: representing the white winter fur of stoats, with their black tail tips.
Vair: representing squirrel skins, in blue and white.
If something (say a dog or badger) is shown in its natural colours, it's called proper.
Conventional representations of tinctures used when it is not possible to print the actual colors:
Heraldic Ordinaries
Ordinaries - the simple shapes used on heraldic shields, against a colour, metal or fur background. If you are making your own design, choose one of these main ordinaries:
Fess = horizontal stripe across the shield
Pale = vertical stripe down the shield
Bend = diagonal stripe
Chevron = like a house gable, pointing upwards
Cross = a plain cross
Saltire = a 'St. Andrew's cross'
Chief = bar across top edge of shield
Bordure = border round edges of shield
Pile = downward-pointing triangle
You can also divide your shield into two colours, either vertically or horizontally, or into four different-coloured quarters.
You don't have to use an ordinary, but if you do remember to never put a colour on colour or a metal on a metal. Try to remember this heraldic rule: colours don't show up well against colours, or metals against metals. This also applies to charges.
Heraldic Charges
Charges - emblems added to the shield, on the background, the 'ordinary', or both.
There can be one big charge, or several smaller repeated ones. Here are some of the common charges you could use:
Crosses - of many different types
Stars
Rings
Balls
Crescents
Diamonds
Flowers
They can be any colour, but remember never put colour on colour, for example a green star on blue, or metal on metal, for example a white flower on yellow.
Many knights also used animals as charges.
Animal Charges
Any animal - either one big one or several smaller - can be used as a charge. They can be shown in many different ways, for instance:
Rearing up (rampant) - like the lion and the hare in the pictures above
Standing (statant) - like the dog
For birds, with wings outstretched (displayed) - like the eagle
Walking along (passant) - like the other lion
If the animal is looking towards you, it is also guardant or 'on guard'. So the lion in the picture is passant guardant.
The ancient royal arms of England are 3 golden lions, one above the other, walking along on a red shield: or, in heraldic code, gules three lions passant guardant or.
Just to make things more complicated, lions passant guardant are also called leopards - but they don't have spots.
Choosing Your Animal
Animals symbolised different qualities. So for instance:
Lions = bravery
Dogs = faithfulness, reliability
Stags = wisdom and long life
Eagles = power and nobility
Badgers = endurance or 'hanging on'
You could also design your own animal charge.
For instance a cat, horse or other favourite pet.
Or you could choose a fabulous beast...
Fabulous Beasts
Though often used as 'charges', these fabulous beasts never really existed.
But some people believed they did, maybe because they'd heard about them in stories made up by travellers to distant lands, like crusading knights or merchant adventurers. Pictures of them also appeared in 'bestiaries', a popular kind of illustrated medieval story-book.
Here are some you could use:
Dragon: the earliest and most common fabulous beast, also used as a badge by Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Welsh. A brave and cunning defender of treasure.
Griffin: a combination of lion and eagle. Symbolises watchfulness and courage - and also guards treasure.
Cockatrice: a cross between a cockerel and a dragon, supposedly hatched from a cock's egg by a snake or toad. Could kill by looking at you, and symbolised protection.
Manticore or 'man-tiger': a fearsome man-eating creature with a lion's body, man's face, tusks, horns and a deafening trumpet-like voice.
Cadency
Cadency - the use of various devices designed to show a manâs position in a family, with the aforementioned basic aim of reserving the entire arms to the head of the family and to differentiate the arms of the rest, who are the cadets, or younger members.
Heraldic works in the 16th century refer to cadency marks as:
a label for the eldest son during his fatherâs lifetime;
a crescent for the second son;
a mullet (five-pointed star) for the third;
a martlet (a mythical bird), the fourth;
an annulet (a small ring), the fifth;
a fleur-de-lis, the sixth;
a rose, the seventh; and so forth.

look alright, I know everyone is headcanoning Grian as a kĹtare (kingfisher) this season because of his obsessive crush on the ocean but I need you guys to hear me out on this okay... if anyone is a kĹtare this season it's 100% Gem (I mean c'mon her skin has the blues and everything!). no, Grian is not a kĹtare, Grian is and always will be a kea.
(reasoning under the cut because it got kind of long, as well as some pictures of birds being idiots)
first things first, not only are they a parrot (which I have seen Grian headcanoned as being alongside being a macaw specifically) but their colors fit his vibe, just look at these funky lil guys??

majestic dorks.
secondly, kea are not only the worlds only alpine parrot (hello magic mountaineers? he may have a crush on the ocean but he did choose to build his base against a mountain this season), they're also well known for being (and I feel the need to stress this) absolute fucking prankster gods. they're literally known for their mischievous, chaos bringing personalities, are smart as hell, and are extremely curious and playful to boot. they're literally (lovingly) called the 'clown of the mountain' by some people.
like seriously, here's a small list of things kea have been known to do:
dive bombing roofs to, essentially, use them as fun little slides
they also like to roll stones down roofs for fun
exploring anything new - they're known to investigate backpacks, skis, and even cars, they especially love anything they can easily mess with or grab
on the topic of investigating backpacks, they will literally open said backpacks in order to steal things like food
knocking over skis so that they can ride downhill on them
throwing stones at humans for fun
peeling off and eating the rubber on cars
just fucking with cars in general (see below for an image of a kea messing with a towbar) they'll strip your car of anything not bolted or welded down
they'll nick anything they can get their grubby little beaks or claws on including wallets and passports
breaking into houses through cat doors
turning on water taps
learning to use tools to set off stoat traps
playing with traffic cones
playing with snowballs
there was a kea that literally locked a guy inside of his hut
on top of all of this, they're known to do some of this stuff just to entertain other kea around them.
here's some pictures of the idiots doing their thing:

basically, these guys are dicks and I have never seen a more Grian-coded bird in my life than these little shits. kea Grian supemacy.

Dead boy detectives characters as animals.
This, rather clearly, isn't a review. However, I am currently hyper-fixating on DBD; i'm talking eat, sleep, and breathe these people(Charles rowland you'll forever be famous). So, without further ado; the animals i've assigned them.
__________________ We already canonical animals assigned to two of the characters (shout out to Monty, you remind me of my girlfriend, Archie) but, what if they all had specific animals assigned to them. THIS ISN'T SLANDER I SWEAR. But, if you take it that way, that's brills.
Charles Rowland; Sugar glider / flying squirrel
-You're gonna look at me and say i'm wrong??, to hell with the golden retriever trope: We need more people who are simply the animals who shouldn't but do. Charles Rowland is that person, argue with someone else if you don't see the vision.
RIP Charles Rowland, you would've loved "am I gay/autistic" quizzes and the concept of being omnisexual.
Edwin payne/paine; New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat/ stoat.
-How does one spell his last name cause i've seen it spelt both ways, any-whom; I don't actually have any context for this but it just generally feels right. If he had to be any animal: I 100% believe it'd be a bat, more specifically that type of bat. Although; I do giggle at the relationship square he's got going on, especially after this list. 10 points voted to stoat though, cuties fr.
RIP Edwin payne, you wouldve loved gay marriage and therapy. You also would've hated colleen hoover
Crystal palace; Fennec fox.
-Again; I do not have a genuine reason behind such a claim; but, actually nothing, but nothing. She's genuinely a sweetie & I will nvr stand for Crystal slander: she's simply a teenage girl with some issues dawg. BUT; fennec foxes are the animal of resemblance for her because I say so. (Headcanon: she absolutely had one at home & it'd be the most spoiled thing in the world; Crystal named her wisp.)
RIP Crystal Palace, you would've loved feminine rage playlists and tiktok shop headphones x stickers
Niko Sasaki; Chinchilla / European polecat
-Y'all please see the vision. please. She's gen so chinchilla coded: if you look hard enough(I'm completely pulling this out of my arse.) This whole paragraph is gonna be complete spirals/rants(like always) but, dawg Niko was such a delight, like when I first saw the Netflix ad I was conflicted but she's such a darling. I shed so many tears over her 'death' because like, no. She's alive and very well.
RIP Niko sasaki, you would've loved the hurt/comfort tag on ao3 and making your friends get married in the sims.
_____________
Thank you for coming to my ted-talk. Salut !

DO U HAVE any more squid game furries hcsâŚ.. IM CURIOUS :3 and if not urmmmm who is ur underrated favâŚ.. aka a character u think is cool but isnt talked abt that much
OMG YES I DO HAVE MORE FURRY HEADCANONS!!!
(putting a readmore here bc i ended up rambling fjfhgbkfnfkdk)
i think that daeho would be a tabby cat, a lot of ppl headcanon him as a tiger bc of his name but i think it would be sooo cute if he was a kitty cat with a name meaning "big tiger" LOLLL. jungbae is like...... a puppy doggy to me. he's friendly and enthusiastic and loves the idea of hierarchies (like with his marine talk) and tries to seem tough occasionally, but he's also a big sweetie and kind and caring :3 idk what kind of dog he'd be though....... still undecided on that
i can kinda picture sangwoo being a kitty too ngl........ the way that he can be kinda aloof sometimes reminds me of a cat lol plus something abt the symbolism/imagery of him being a cat and gihun being a rat is. Ouugh. but also i feel like cats are kinda generic choices for furries so idk if i'm 100% decided on that or if i wanna go with something else. i've also considered making gihun himself a cat at different points and might still draw him as one lol, the idea of him being a black cat (an animal that's considered lucky in some cultures and unlucky in others) rlly appeals to me. i am very indecisive lmao.
saebyeok i could definitely see as being a fox or a wolf. maybe a fox since they're more independent/solitary like she is? i could also picture her being a golden jackal

(^ one of those). idk why....... she just gives me canid vibes for some reason
thanos would be a ferret. this one i'm 100% sure on

^ the same image.
namgyu is a hyena. to me.
my biggest/most favourite furry hc that i haven't drawn yet though is noeul being a hare!!! specifically a belgian hare!!!!!

she's VERY lagomorph coded to me. ig kinda bc she literally wears that bunny mascot costume in canon but also something abt her is just. yeah. definitely a lagomorph. i picked a hare instead of a rabbit bc hares are a little more Unhinged than rabbits imo and they have that kind of intense look in their eyes plus they're stronger and more lanky than rabbits, so i feel like they suited her a little more yknow? i feel like the juxtaposition of her being a prey animal who literally kills people for her job could be rlly cool too
+ one more note on furry au things. i think that stoat inho would make an active effort to disguise what species he is when he's in his frontman outfit, bc i guess in this au what species someone is could be a way of identifying them relatively easily. he probably tucks his tail in/ties it down and wears a mask with cat or dog-like pointed ears on it so that people don't know he's a stoat. hence why gihun wouldn't rlly be suspicious of him when he joins the games bc he just assumed that the frontman was either a cat or a dog, lol. i also think that inho would usually be a stoat with darker brown-ish fur naturally, but he dyes it a much more typical light brown/orange colour before joining the games as "youngil". hehehe
ALSO FOR UNDERRATED CHARACTERS. jungbae and noeul!!!!!!!!! they're two of my ultimate favs from squid game and i love them both so much but it feels like a lot of ppl kinda forget abt them ;___;
jungbae is such an important character and his death is going to rlly shape s3 and change gihun going forward imo, bc in a way he was one of the last pieces of hope gihun had to cling to and he was gihun's best friend...... and now that he's gone and died in a way that gihun might feel guilty abt or blame himself for........ i can imagine his death will be a defining part of the trajectory for s3. plus his interactions with gihun in s3 were genuinely so cute and sweet and he was a well-needed ray of sunshine and comedic relief in s2 when things were otherwise bleak, and personally i just find him very likeable and i love every scene with him in it, he has so much chemistry with everyone and he's so fun...... but then in a lot of fan content ppl rlly just have him there as an afterthought or don't even include him at all, and it makes me so sad. i've read so many fics where gihun moves on from his death kinda fast and forgives inho for it after like 3 hours and it always makes me a little mad even if the fic is otherwise good. like that's his best friend!!!! he's not just gonna be like "well you shouldn't have killed my best friend who i've known for 10+ years but you're hot so i forgive you it's fine :3" to inho. dgmw i love inhun but gihun is NOT gonna forgive him for killing jungbae ever, imo. he might end up sparing inho's life or allying with him but i don't think jungbae's death is something he'll move on from easily yknow. aiauauauaiaooihgh.
noeul is underrated for sliiightly more understandable reasons imo, bc i think the subplot with her hasn't rlly "taken off" properly in s2 and we're going to see more of her in action in s3, so i don't think her full potential as a character has been realised yet. but regardless she's still a very fascinating character to me and i love her so much. the way she's a good person in some contexts but a murderer in other contexts is so good.
i love how she can compartmentalise herself in that way and i loooove how player 246 joining the games is steadily breaking down the walls she'd built separating the parts of herself. she's been noeul the civilian, noeul the mascot actor, and noeul the soldier, but now all of those parts of herself are being collapsed into one and i find that so interesting. i'm so excited to see where they go with her in s3.
also i love how her subplot also gives us a glimpse into how the soldiers live and how in a way, they're just as much a part of the game and players in it as the actual players are. they're also given numbers and uniforms, have their personal belongings removed, can't communicate with the outside world, can be killed after making the slightest mistake, are violent towards one another, and are seen as cannon fodder by inho and the vips...... just like the players are. they're completely lacking in personal agency and aren't rlly given basic rights or respect. and inho is perfectly fine with sacrificing them to achieve his own goals. idk i find it rlly interesting how squid game makes the point that the guards are just as much pawns in and victims of the same viscious system that the players are stuck in. in the end it's all just disenfranchised oppressed people carrying out violence against other disenfranchised oppressed people for the entertainment of the wealthy who never have to get their own hands dirty. it's so. ouuugh. i'm not smart enough to know what to say abt it but there's something so fascinating there for sure and i rlly love how noeul's subplot explores that dynamic in more depth/shows it more openly
ANYWAY SORRY this post turned into a massive wall of text i'm so sorry i'm a Certified Yapper. tysm for the ask i had a lot of fun answering it :3 i hope you're having a good day/night/etc! <3

just saw the 1st warriors game post and i cant believe it generated the name "lightfall" thats SO gorgeous??? "palepuddle"???? anyway im cvurious abt what names like prefixes n suffixes ur using!!
My favourite name that got randomly generated is Bluebranch âşď¸ so pretty that I might have to steal it to make an oc with! To answer your question, currently, Warriors: Generations uses a traditional naming system*. The player will be able to name cats or rename them, but the game will also randomly generate a name for some. When that happens, their prefix will be selected depending on the cat's appearance, and their suffix will be randomly selected. The github repository (raw code) of the game is linked on that post, so if you'd like, you can go poking around to see what names I'm using yourself! But here's a list of every prefix and suffix currently available in the game. Suffixes are limited (the classic traditional naming system usually has a very limited amount), so at some point I would like to add in some more, but it's not really a huge priority at the moment.
*Traditional naming system, for those who may not be aware, is a method of naming warriors that aims to follow more in line to the first arc books. If you'd like to learn more, I would highly recommend reading ailuronymy's blog.

may we hear the general concepts of ur fics?
Absolutely!
In (rough) order of completion (though not necessarily in order of interest), we have:
Memento (Currently at around 14k; â3/5ths finished).
Five Leshy POV one-shots centering around the creation of the canon deathcards in the game.
I shared a WIP of this one a while back (which can be found here, though I think this segment has been edited a bit [x]) and more or less havenât touched it since, whoops.
This is also the one where Iâd have to either be really strategic or acknowledge the ARG because several of the Deathcards are ARG characters (though right now my plan for getting around that is via referencing the Inscryption beta instead⌠which doesnât make sense out of context but it will if I can get the words down).
[Working title] Solitude (Currently â2k; Iâd say itâs around 1/4 done, though in a really fragmented, workaround way)
The Scrybes contemplate their enmity.
Chances are this one will get done first just because thereâs a lot of room for it to be extremely slapdash. As a result, itâs kind of rambly, so the majority of the work on it will probably be editing for coherence but heyâyou win some you lose some.
Again, just a very rough character study to figure out how I want to write them in the futureâbut that also gives room to slot in fun headcanons (like the Scrybes being able to âfeelâ what goes on in their individual realms even if they canât directly perceive it) which is the other reason Iâm writing it.
[Working title] System Maintenance (at around 1k; pretty dialogue-heavy)
In which Rebecha learns new and awful interesting facts about the Scrybes every time sheâs forced to pay them a visit.
Mostly written because I really like Rebecha and think sheâs a fun way to show just how terrible the Scrybes blue-and-orange morality can be from an outside perspective (I.e. without their own obvious biases towards their own plans).
The segment I have written is Rebecha and P03 (hence the working title) but a âfinishedâ version of this would probably have her interacting with the others too (as separate chapters). Might stop at just one though, who knows.
[Working title] Mustela erminea (<1k, probably going to get either overhauled or absorbed into something else).
The talking cardsâ names and titles no longer bear any meaning to them; all that remains is the hate for their captor and the vehement notion that they used to be something else.
I cannot describe this any other way than itâs fun to write reverse uncanny valley effect with P03. Itâs been a stoat for a while but still gets intuitively freaked out by its own heartbeat. Fun stuff.
The working title makes it obvious where I started with this oneâagain though Iâm pretty sure this one will end up becoming something else (though Iâm not sure what yet so itâs still being listed here as a standalone).
[Working title] Stalemate (<1k)
With his takeover of Inscryption complete, Leshy contemplates the role of his (begrudgingly accepted) collaborator.
For Co-Op and therefore very low priority (I like Co-Op, donât get me wrong, Iâm just in the mood to write more canon-compliant/sort of canon-compliant stuff most of the time).
Ridiculously bare-bones but is generally âWhy did I choose to collaborate with this assholeâ with the same sentiment in both directions. But per their general moral codes neither is going to go back on the deal so now they have to deal with each other and itâs Sucks for everyone involved. (Worth noting they still hate each other so itâs canon-compliant in that regard).
Thereâs technically a couple more but they donât have much chance of being picked back up and/or had a couple of cool lines that have since been recycled into one of the above works so Iâm not listing them.
#Re: Inbox#Re: Anon#Thank you for giving me an excuse to dump my concepts; I appreciate it#As you can tell Iâve never decided on titles in my life#Beca and 03 actually have a really fun to write dynamic and I have no idea why#Theyâre not even friends itâs just during repair 03 is externally neutral while internally *screaming* ''Do NOT fuck this up''#Whereas Beca is on autopilot and Does Not Care that sheâs repairing what is essentially inscrypâs equivalent of a god

Paracosm Resources <3
Need help bringing your paracosm to life? Try these free resources!
â ď¸ Updates always pending! Suggestions always welcome! Feel free to message me any tips or questions <3 â ď¸
(Cont. below cut, or with real time updates on this google doc!)
Art Programs
FireAlpaca - 2D Art Program, Animation. Where I make most of my digital art, and paint the frames for my animations :) It is free to use, and easy to learn and use! It can make basic animations as well, such as gifs. It requires download.
Krita - 2D Art Program. Professional, free digital paint software :) I have not used it before, though I have heard good things.
GIMP - 2D Art Program, Photo Manipulation. It's free to use, but I do not like it/recommend it highly. But! If FireAlpaca and Krita don't float your stoat, try Gimp! For 2D art, but also able to emulate Photoshop to a degree ^^
Inkscape - 2D Art Program. Free to use digital illustration software. Makes 2D art :)
Of course, who can forget classics like good old MS Paint, and the new and exciting 3D MS Paint, which can both be used to create some really neat things! Classic MS Paint is available here in browser form! If you need that. I just think it's neat!
Art AI
Petalica Paint - Coloring Software. An in browser, watercolor manga style coloring software, which can (almost) effortlessly color in any of your line art pieces! I've played around with it for my Thorn illustration style piece, and enjoyed it! It is free to use, and can take user input to make the colorations more precise.
ArtBreeder - 3D Realism Software. Using Artbreeder, you can create lifelike images of your paras, planets, or potentially even fursona, using the intricate AI they let you work with for free! A premium version exists, but most functions are fully usable without - though I recommend donating ^^ You can randomly generate, or prune and shape what you make until its perfect! Slow to use and get the hang of, but very worth it! Artbreeder is also pioneering an intriguing animation software to go alongside their product! Browser based.
3D Software
Blender - 3D Modeling, Animation. The best (in my opinion) free 3D modelling software.
MagicaVoxel - 3D Pixel Art. Free to use! Could be interesting :)
MikuMikuDance - 3D Rigging. Anime style rigging and animation software, free to use, and certified internet artefact! Has stood the test of time, and is still used and loved today. Can support ports of many kinds of assets, including, I believe, those from Blender, and of course those that are downloaded. DA has a bunch of old MMD communities you can raid for assets!
Animaze - Face Rigger. Use 3D models and a webcam to watch your paras talk! Models can be made in Blender, downloaded online, or even from CHARAT V, CHARAT GENESIS sister app!
Character Creators
CHARAT GENESIS - 2D Character Creator. Browser based anime style character creator, with multiple crops and poses, and infinitely customizable options. It is legitimately insane. Has a 3D function called CHARAT V which can apparently convert characters made in CHARAT GENESIS into 3D models compatible with Face Rig and Animaze!
V-Katsu - 3D Character Creator. Free on steam! Anime style, intensive character creator, by the same people who made Koikatsu, and Koikatsu Party, two amazingly detailed 3D hentai makers. While V-Katsu is a SFW VTuber maker, if you're looking for NSFW anime content, you could always spend roughly $70 on the full NSFW versions. V-Katsu requires a translation mod (free online as well) which you have to install, or the ability to read Kanji <3 Works with VR tech.
V-Roid Studios - 3D Character Creator. Free on steam! Anime style, fairly in depth character creator, that allows for some degree of digital 3D hand sculpting, particularly with their amazing hair engine, to get your paras looks perfect!
And, of course, Picrew has thousands of character creators of various styles and quality uploaded by the artists who made them! Also, honestly I think we as a society should embrace making dinky chibis in Gacha Life. IDK why everyone is mean to the gacha kids, like we weren't all cringe at some point,
World Design
HomeStyler - 3D and 2D Room Designer. Make a model of an interior for a home or building, using real 1:1 furniture of IRL brands! Apparently this is free to use, though there is a premium version, and it offers 3D and 2D models.
Map to World - 3D Planet Maker. Turn your fantasy world into a 3D model of the planet. Put maps directly on, or design the surface and textures of your world. Takes a lot of getting used to, but it is AMAZING. Free to use, and browser based!
PlanetMaker - 3D Planet Maker. Make a customized 3D planet! Free to use browser site! I have never used this, but I would love to mess around with it sometime! Allows you to add orbital rings, change textures, and more at the click of a mouse.
If on sale, I also recommend snagging a copy of the Sims, particularly 3 or 4, for character creation and world design. Maybe not the best gameplay without mods, but it's also a load of fun, and very easy to add custom content to! Minecraft also. But you just need Minecraft, in general. Beyond its ability to fairly faithfully recreate structures from your paracosms, it's just Good.
Game Creators
Maybe you wanna turn your paracosm into a cool game idk, just thought I'd put these here!
Construct 3 - 2D Game Creator. Beginner level game making :) Drag-and-drop if/then style programming.
GameSalad - Codeless 2D Game Creator. Drag and drop style/no coding, beginner friendly. Free version available!
Solpeo - 2D Game Creator. HTML5 based game engine for 2D and isometric game development. Some programming knowledge needed. Platforms supported: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer 9+. Free version available.
Stencyl - Codeless 2D Game Creator. Drag and drop style building/no coding skills needed. Has editable templates!
Scratch - 2D Game Creator. Very easy to use and totally free, though relatively basic!
Unity - 3D, 2D, and VR Game Creator. Make games with 3D software. Import your own assets (Blender compatible) or download free options, or buy the rights to models. Works for 3D and 2D games. Free version available, and now works with VR tech!
Unreal Engine - 3D Game Creator. Extremely advanced 3D game developer. Highly customizable. Free to use!
Twine - Text-based Game Creator. Use a map to make a branching paths text-based story game. Free to use.
Squiffy - Text-based Game Creator. have used Squiffy and it can make some really, truly incredible things. Can take a while to pick up, and learn how to use to its full potential. Free to use! Has an online and offline library of player creations you can get inspiration from!
Quest - Text-based Game Creator. I've never used this, but it seems cool! Use it to make interactive text-based DND game adventures in browser.
Ren'Py - Visual Novel Creator. Visual novel engine, that is well acclaimed, and of course, free to use!
Companion AI
Replika - 3D Companion.
Kajiwoto - Chatbot Companion. Customizable, learning AI you can shape into a personality. Communicates via Discord like chat box.
Organization
Toyhou.se - Character Gallery. A customizable library where you can upload all of your paras and characters for the public to view! Free to use, but requires a premium member to invite you!
Refsheet - Character Gallery. I haven't used it before, but I've heard good things, and that it's a suitable alternative to toyhou.se if you can't get an invite!
Notebook.AI - Character Gallery. I haven't used it before, but I've heard good things, and that it's a suitable alternative to toyhou.se if you can't get an invite!
World Anvil - World Building Toolset. Like character galleries, but for worlds and their lore :)
Scabard - World Building Toolset. Aimed at DnD campaigners, but I reckon it'll be useful for many!
YARPS - World Building Toolset. More focused around story and lore than Scabard or World Anvil, and looks beautiful! Still in its prototype stage, however.
Pinterest - Photo Organizer. Look at, collect, and sort images into boards. Personalizes your feed based on that, and is free to use and join! However, unlike their myriad of wonderful recipes, DIY tutorials, and the likes - a lot of the images are uploaded by second parties and not credited, so be careful reuploading anything you find! Also great for finding outfits and art inspo for your paras!
Generators
Fantasy Name Generator - Name Generators. Does what it says on the tin! Generates fantasy names. Is a lovely website, run by a purportedly lovely woman.
Fantasy Map Generator - Map Generator. Randomly generates a fictional map, which you can view in 2D or 3D.
Donjon RPG Generator - Multiple Generators. Can make maps, weapons, items, etc.
Seventh Sanctum - Multiple Generators. One of my favorites from high school! Does all kinds of things - the standard items, spells, and names - but also prompts, backstories, characters, and even comedy generators!
ShindanMaker - Multiple Generators. User created and uploaded, any kind of generator you can imagine, of varying complexity. And when I say any generator? I mean ANY generator.
Audio
Audacity - Record and Edit Audio. What can't Audacity do? I love Audacity to death. At surface level, it records audio. I've used it to record voices for my paras, and get audio for animations and games I've worked on. I cannot recommend it enough. Comprehensive editing, and with some investigation, it can do so, so much more than just record simple dialogue.
FL Studios - Compose. Compose music with an unlimited free trial. Upgrades available for purchase!
Indie Game Music - Royalty Free Music Library. Free to use Indie Game Music. What it says on the box!
AudioJungle - Royalty Free Music and Audio Library. Thousands of free to use audio clips!
Online Piano - Someone could use this, for recording, or just messing around. I've seen plenty of paras who play piano, this could just be used for fun!
Online Guitar - Same reasons as above, but this site looks kinda sketchy. Use at your own risk or reward! Audio
For real, if you ever need music, sound effects, or really any MP3 clips that can be used without infringing on copyright laws, just search 'royalty free' (music/audio/insert thing here) same applies for photos! Make sure the source is reputable, however.
Tutorials
W3Schools - Coding. Learn the basics of coding, for free, online!
Miscellaneous
Debut Video Capture - Screen Recorder. Record game footage and let's plays for free! Professional and home versions. I see a few of our community members have paras who run YouTube channels, and I thought these might help! It could be a nice way to connect your parames. YouTube quality <3
Pixton - Comic Maker. Comic making website. I have no experience with this at all, but some may find it useful!
Picfont - Image Editor. Puts customizable text on an image. I used these for @paraesthetics paracosm header edits <3 It has a premium version (???) but the free version has all functions, but it crashes regularly (honestly seems timed :/) but once you get it down, it's a very quick process, and you won't have to worry about that at all.
Itch.io - Publishing. You can publish your self made games here :)
Korsakow - ??? Described as, "The Future of Storytelling" and is apparently a way to create interactive films. I *just* found out about this, but thought I should include it for someone who may know how to use and appreciate it! Free? Unknown, at the moment.
Tips and Tricks
Animation Done Easy
Our forefather's of internet animation used MS Paint, Windows Movie Maker, and Audacity. All of these, or their equivalents, are free on standard computers. I, personally, use FireAlpaca - which works just as well, if not better, than MS Paint for animation - but takes longer, and definitely lacks that retro feeling. I also use my trackpad to draw and animate everything, so its doable, but probably not totally comfortable, to animate like this for most people :)

History of the Clans
There are two versions of the story of how all things began. The one the Clans know deals in monsters and magic, and a rose-tinted idea of the importance of warriors and the feline people in general. The one told here is from the collective knowledge of scholars, and is much closer to the truth.
Once upon a time, there was a seemingly never-ending forest, and it was home to thousands of animals - badgers, foxes, stoats, owls, and best of all, an uncountable amount of prey to feed those animals. No one hungered or wanted for land to call their own. The forest brought in curious visitors every day, who had heard tales of this land of plenty and had come to see if the stories were true.Â
Among them were the cats, a very foreign creature that the others had not seen before. Cats are remarkable at taking over an area and exploding in numbers before anyone has a chance to blink, and these ones did not disappoint in that aspect. They quickly took up the remaining available space and settled in to hunt and sleep to their heartâs content.Â
But they did not come from nowhere, as the rest of the predators had assumed. They had been brought in by humans, who were even more alien than the cats, and who were on their way after their escapee pets. With humans came a drastic upheaval - the forest was cut down to a quarter of its original size just as fast as the cats had made themselves comfortable; the once wooded slope to the west had a structure built near it and the ground was torn up for planting strange grass; the east was taken over by glass and brick from the humans; and finally, a straight, wide path, stinking of something foreign and dangerous, cut the area apart, splitting the high stones in the west and the growing wetlands in the north from the hills and what remained of the forest.Â
This unprecedented shrinking of territory left many animals without a home, or in defense of the little they had left. Friend turned on friend, family forgotten. Quickly, a free-for-all broke out, leading to many predators dead or severely injured and fleeing for their life from the forest. The cats proved themselves adaptable to any situation - the entire community banded together and, as a team, drove out the rest of the predators, sending them in every direction but the east and properly taking the forest for themselves.
The victory was short-lived as a new problem presented itself: everyone had lingered as long as there was food to eat before escaping. Mice, squirrels, birds, rabbits - there were barely any of them left. It wasnât helped by the cats having a tendency to overhunt when there was nothing else to do. The unity once present dissolved as territories began to overlap and cats attacked each other for pathetic morsels that could be swallowed whole. The few kittypets living with humans had even their terrible food stolen, with some cats deserting the forest to wander the developing streets, hoping for charity. The prey population continued to shrink and some turned to even more desperate, much darker sources of food.Â
Things got even worse when a crew of pilgrims arrived, late to the party and unaware of how bad the forest had gotten. Natives immediately bullied them away from their scant reserves. With nowhere else to go, the pilgrims huddled on the other side of the river on the edge of the forest and prayed for help.Â
Then she arrived.
To this day, no one knows where the old molly known only as the Crone came from. She seemed to appear from the mist to inspect the forest, sniff disdainfully, and call together a sizeable cluster of cats before leading them away to the hills, where some of the human grass had gotten loose and taken over the moor.Â
The decrease in population helped reserve the dwindling resources a bit, and cats temporarily forgot their battles to watch curiously as the new colony in the west found a place to settle at the top of the hills and thrive on the influx of prey that came from the farmland, which had receded its grip on the moor and left it free to hunt on. Several cats discussed leaving the forest to request sanctuary with this colony. Others turned their eyes across the humanâs path (that was slowly turning into stinking black stone), where the wetlands were settling into a proper marsh. The pilgrimsâ scant territory was growing grass, bringing in some animals to hunt.
Before any action could be taken on its own, the Crone reappeared in the forest and called together the residents. She announced that her test run of creating a colony had gone successfully, and now she was ready to help the rest of the scattered cats create their own groups, organize a hunting system, and allow their land to restore itself to something one could comfortably live in. This, she said, would ensure an era of peace for everyone, and if any were interested, they could come with her to be trained as leaders to complete her mission.
Four cats volunteered: Brawn, a huge, powerful tom that had fought and won many battles in exchange for prey; Ripple, a stray from far off that had fallen in with the pilgrims; Dewdrop, a former kittypet who had been cast out from her home and was desperate for security; and Clear Sky, a pilgrim that was ambitious and eager to join the project. The Crone took all four of them and left for the hills again without another word, except an order to limit the hunting in the forest. This was obeyed, since there wasnât enough prey to hunt normally anyway.
Before too long, the four cats returned and began to gather cats. Brawn called for those that he considered allies of himself or his friends, which were mostly those he had fought together with before, giving him the strongest fighters, and claimed the forest for his colony. Ripple had his pilgrims already, and they stayed south, on the far side of the river. Those that had been cast away or were weak or distrusted were taken in by Dewdrop, who brought them to the marshes so that they were far enough away to not cause problems with the other colonies. The rest who did not fit in anywhere else or were loners looking to have a proper home again followed Clear Sky to the outlier part of the land, touching only the corner of the forest and river territories. The Crone brought in no one else except one stray pilgrim called Grey Wing as her new second-in-command, a position she called âdeputyâ. The other leaders followed suit by appointing deputies for their own, carefully chosen to contrast their superiors and speak as the voice of the rest of the colonies.Â
With this, the leaders exercised what the Crone had taught them: in an unheard of move, hunting was organized and scheduled, with acceptable hunting areas changed day-to-day and prey of the day altering depending on what had the most numbers at the time. Borders were laid out so that no one accidentally took from another colony and reduced their number of prey. The most amazing of these decisions came from the pilgrims, who Ripple taught to hunt in the water - because no one had dared to jump in the deeper parts or even really fish at all, there was plenty of prey for the pilgrims, leading to no source of conflict with anyone else. The other colonies slowly began to prosper over time as less cats shared more prey with their communities. The exception was Clear Skyâs colony, which he proved to be a poor leader of and was eventually driven out before the colony disbanded and either joined up with the others or left for other areas.Â
With the unusual, regimented structure, there came a very faint sense of ranks within the colonies: the leader, the deputy, and queens, with the average member not belonging to any of these and being unnamed in their position. Queens were given special treatment and their own dens to have their children, and they had prey delivered to them while they raised the next generation.Â
As time went on and the colonies grew strong, healthy and well-fed, their membersâ confidence were boosted. Old grudges resurfaced and the borders that were put in place to help hunting became places to defend or skirmish to settle arguments. Fights broke out, even with the leaders attempting to resolve disputes peacefully. Worse, these fights escalated as more cats joined their new friends to defend their pride or help with revenge. Things got worse and more vicious, until several very young cats got caught in a large battle they had nothing to do with and were killed.
This was the breaking point. Queens across the territories campaigned for a law to be set in place for the protection of their kits, while the more peaceful members encouraged rules of their own to prevent these unnecessary fights. The leaders got together and devised a burgeoning code that every cat was expected to follow if they wanted to stay in their home.Â
The first of these was making a new rank for cats that were too young to be acceptably attacked, with a suffix to their name, -kit, which was taken away once they were older. These cats were under six months old, and were absolutely forbidden to be hurt or killed. Those that aged out of it were still in danger, until Brawnâs deputy, Ember, started teaching them to hunt and fight to protect themselves. The rest of the colonies, now under the name of âClansâ, immediately borrowed this idea. Soon after came the next rank of apprentice, and the suffix of -kit was changed to -paw.Â
At the time, suffixes were reserved for the young, but the leader of the river Clan, now called River Ripple to give respect to his territory, took his groupâs original two-part naming system and awarded apprentices for making it to adulthood with their own individual suffixes. This, too, very quickly became popular with everyone else.Â
More changes were made over time - elder as a rank being added, religion and seers blossoming into things of great value, more additions to the code, the Clans being properly named, and so on - but these came to be more gradually. For now, at least, the wild and fast alteration of the forest from a place of chaos and disorder to a variety of territories with law-abiding Clans had been completed. From there, things have only gotten better.

General Clan Info
ThunderClan
Present Leader: Bluestar
Present Deputy: Redtail
Present Mystic: Spottedleaf
Present Diplomat: Larkwing
Important Treaties: Wind-Thunder
Rival Clans: ShadowClan
Average Appearance: ThunderClan cats are usually bulky, and thick furred. Theyâre tall, broad shouldered and itâs commonly joked that ThunderClan toms are trees that come to life. They are usually double coated with thick fur that makes them look even larger in the winter. ThunderClan cats have appearances closest to Norwegian forest cats, torties and van cats with boxy somewhat square faces. Their bodies are stock with large paws, almond eyes and larger ears. Cats from Tree Runner lines deviate from the standard built and look like WindClan cats.
Common Prey: Mice, squirrels, small weasels, stoats, robins, jays, cardinals and rabbits.
Delicacy Prey: Porcupine, raccoon, turkeys, snakes and woodpecker
Territory Grounds: A large deciduous forest with very dense brackens and foliage. They have three or four small streams rolling through their forest and two large ones. Â
Compliance to Code: The ThunderClan cats donât often comply with the Warrior Code seeing it as an optional set of guidelines. ThunderClan leaders have historically referred to most of the code as severely outdated. As such, ThunderClan has a history of taking in cats in need. While challenging your leader isnât approved of, ThunderClan will see it as a sign of strength to challenge your leader if your ideal is a good one.
Windclan
Present Leader: Tallstar
Present Deputy: Deadfoot
Present Mystic: Barkface
Present Diplomat: Grasswhisker
Important Treaties: Wind-Thunder Alliance
Rival Clans: Shadowclan
Average Appearance: Lithe cats with long legs, long ears and long tails. Theyâre made for running with larger chests and rounded paws. Their coats are short in the summer as they donât have much shade on their territory and grow long in the winter. WindClan cats are usually brown, tan or white with the occasional tabby that happens to look like grass when trying to blend in. Tunnelers are noted to have a ThunderClan like build.
Common Prey: Most WindClan diet is made of rabbits, hares and various birds. For birds, they most often catch plovers, merlins, grouses and wheatears. Otherwise they eat various rabbits and hares. Sometimes ThunderClan prey will sprint right across the border and so they get mice and squirrels.
Delicacy Prey: Dragonflies, lizards, and the occasional very lost porcupine.
Hunting Grounds: WindClan lives are a large moorland with several burrows and hills. WindClan has three or four small rivers running through their territory allowing them access to the occasional duck.
Compliance to Code: WindClan has gradually grown looser and looser to the warrior code and have begun to take ThunderClanâs stance of using it as a set of guidelines. They arenât as blatant when ignoring the warrior code but often allow their warriors to wander off land due to living so near to the Sky Kingdom compared to the other clans. WindClan also tends to ignore the rules regarding staying with only their clan and become very close to WindClan.
Riverclan
Present Leader: Stormstar
Present Deputy: Oakheart
Present Mystic: Brambleberry
Present Diplomat: Reedtail
Important Treaties: No Treaties
Enemy Clans:
Average Appearance: RiverClan cats are sleek, thick coated cats with webbed toes and thick tails. RiverClan cats have streamlined bodies with thick ear furnishings to keep water from them. Their eyes are ovaled and some cats even have a second, clear eyelid that keeps water out but thatâs a rare trait. Theyâre usually russet colored or a gray blue that lets them blend in better with the water.Â
Common Prey: Crayfish, minnows, ducks, geese and the occasional mouse.
Hunting Grounds: RiverClan has a large meadow of land surrounded by a river making their territory an island. The river bank is marshy and the river makes the boundary between River and ThunderClan.
Compliance to Code: RiverClan is stricter to the code in that they follow most rules and often turn away outsiders. Only during Crookedstarâs reign does RiverClan begin to loosen up and they are rewarded with allies in ThunderClan and RiverClan builds better interclan relationships. RiverClan remains in an between of lenient and stern regarding the warrior code.
Shadowclan
Present Leader: Brokenstar
Present Deputy: Blackfoot
Present Mystic: Runningnose
Present Diplomat: Toadpelt
Important Treaties: No Treaties
Enemy Clans: Thunderclan
Average Appearance: ShadowClan cats are short eared, with long legs and firm tails. Their mind-length coats and round eyes with double layered coats. They have strong hind legs- theyâre built specifically for moving around in a marsh.
Common Prey: Frogs, duck eggs, ducks and geese.
Hunting Grounds: ShadowClan lives in a freshwater marsh with the occasional lost fish from saltwater.
Compliance to Code: ShadowClan is the most rigid to the Warrior Code. ShadowClan is regarded as the most stern and aggressive clan, well-known for violence. ShadowClan considers the Warrior Code right up there with respecting Starclan- of which they are also highly devoted to.

"......Holy shit my guy."
Not like p03 had much room to talk, considering how poorly it'd been doing, but still.
"Alright, you're forbidden from worrying about challengers for a while. They hardly ever show up anymore anyway, and after Luke I have no idea when- ok. Look, you don't need to spend so much time prepping for something that so rarely happens."
Fuck, why did it feel pity for him? After everything? They're all going through shit, what makes his more important than its own? Still...
It climbs on his lap and curls up. Soft... what felt bristle-y as a robot feels soft as a stoat. Interesting. Okay, nevermind curling up, it stretches again and then rolls over onto its back and reaches one paw up to bat at his arm. If it can reach-
"Yeah, he was really annoying too, didn't even have the general consideration to abide by the mechanics of my game. He used a fish as a weapon! Not even a gun shaped like a fish, an actual fish!"
It's said in a "can you believe this crap?" tone, followed by an eyeroll. How did he even get a fish like that? It shouldn't have fit in the code. Ah well. It yawns and stretches again.
"'N all this time I thought those were quirky thematic piercings. Huh."
@forest-peepaw
âWhat? I donât care about whatever âjokeâ you made. Give me back my fucking body.â
It bristles as much as it can with its short fur. Yeah, thereâs really no way to look threatening as a stoat. Especially to someone who can just⌠put you back in your card without a thought.

CSN Event Report - Ethics of Genome Editing

The Science and Ethics of Genome Editing [CN1]Â event held by the Convergence Science Network (CSN) in February ignited thought-provoking discussion about the prospects of future gene-editing technologies, and in particular, the revolutionary CRISPR-Cas9 system. We are currently in a booming age for genetics, largely due to advances in high-throughput DNA sequencing and genome editing. With the emergence of CRISPR as a powerful, precise gene-editing tool that can modify the DNA of essentially any organism, comes many possible applications, and the impacts of these advances have been felt broadly, from work on model organisms in laboratory settings, to improvement of food crops, to medical applications. Â CSN hosted a second event to continue the conversation, offering a view into the future of this technology and to discuss some of the societal issues evoked by the rapid adoption of genome editing tools into the research community and commercial sector.
Who will have access to this technology and its benefits? How will it be used and distributed, and who will have a say?
ABC Radio National presenter, Natasha Mitchell, mediated a discussion of the âethical landscapeâ that technologies such as CRISPR pose with Dr Christopher Gyngell, Research Fellow in Biomedical Ethics at The University of Melbourne, Louise Sales, coordinator of Friends of the Earthâs Emerging Tech Project, and Professor Philip Batterham, Professor in Genetics at The University of Melbourne and president of the International Genetics Federation.
The evening began with a presentation from Dr Gyngell, whose expertise is in biomedical ethics. When he was young, he first was introduced to genome editing with images of âglow in the darkâ mice â the green florescent protein (GFP) gene was originally harnessed from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and is now inserted into the genome of various organisms to be paired with genes of choice as a tracking method (cells producing GFP will appear bright green under light in the blue to ultraviolet range), and hence can be used to make animals âglowâ under certain lighting. Â Following the âglow in the darkâ mice, a âsuper mouseâ was created â a mouse with a modified metabolism receptor (PEPCK-C[CN2]Â )[i] that could run for up to 5 km (as opposed to the usual 200m limit), lived longer, and had minimal fat deposition despite eating more than control mice. The techniques used to produce these genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were inefficient and imprecise, but in the last six years, genome editing has been revolutionised by the use of the CRISPR-Cas9 system, which allows the precise alteration of any DNA sequence.
Gene editing has been used as a tool for decades in plants and non-human animals for agriculture and research purposes. GMO crops can provide resistance to pests, weeds, and other threats, thus reducing farmersâ use of pesticides and herbicides. They also provide food security, with crop yields becoming more consistent and productive (especially important with the threat of drought in Australia). Professor Batterham also emphasised the importance of genetic manipulation of animal models in fundamental research to study genetic principles and human disease. Animal models have greatly enhanced our understanding of the cause and progression of human genetic diseases, and have been vital in developing targets for therapeutic drugs over the past several decades â many a Nobel Prize have been awarded for work performed in animal models. Work using such organisms, as the Batterham group at Bio21 does with vinegar fly models to study insecticide resistance, is strictly regulated, and Professor Batterham âwant[s] to see the public comfortable with what [he does]â. All genetic modification work performed in Australia must be certified by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) under the Gene Technology Act 2000[CN3]Â [ii]. The OGTR monitors all generation, transport, storage and disposal of GMOs to ensure that any risk to the health and safety of people and/or the environment is properly managed.

In a research setting, GMOs are under strict codes of practice, however, genome editing of animals potentially poses more risks in conservation biology and in the environment. Gene drives, genetic engineering technology that can propagate a particular gene(s) throughout successive generations, have been proposed to provide an effective means of genetically modifying specific populations and even entire species. There are many potential local and international applications for gene drives in public health (particularly with regards to limiting transmission of pathogens such as malaria by targeting mosquitos), environmental conservation, and agriculture. For example, New Zealand has launched a campaign, Predator-Free 2050[CN4]Â [iii], to protect its natural fauna by rendering invasive predators (e.g. rats, possums, and stoats) infertile and thus eradicating them. Unlike in a laboratory, however, gene drives are âinherently riskyâ, as containment would be more difficult to enforce and track. Ms Sales is concerned that a Freedom of Information request[iv] [CN5]Â revealed that CSIRO and University of Adelaide are planning a gene drive to be released on islands in Western Australia to drive local mice populations to extinction. As there is a possibility of mice, and in turn, the gene drive, spreading to the mainland (as mice are notorious for stowing away on boats), this case illustrates the need for strict regulation the use of genome-editing techniques, particularly as different nations may have differing policies regarding their use while gene drives may not be confined within country borders. Â
 An entirely different set of ethical questions is raised when it comes to manipulating DNA in humans, particularly any DNA that will be passed on to descendants (germ line). Germ line gene editing can be important in biomedical research to ask vital questions (e.g. studying the basis of diseases, and early development â how we progress from a single cell zygote to a complex multicellular organism). As stem cell therapies are developed, genome editing is a natural adjunct. Some somatic (non-germ line) therapies that utilise genome editing have been approved for Phase I clinical trials that involve editing patient cells in a laboratory and transfer back into the patient. CRISPR allows the precise targeting of any gene, and therefore has been adopted for treatments in monogenic diseases (caused by single genes), such as muscular dystrophy and sickle cell anaemia. The World Health Organization[v] [CN6] estimates that over 10,000 human diseases are monogenic, and these could all be prevented using genome editing â so long as it is proven safe. There is concern that there may be off-target effects using genome editing, and while Professor Batterham has never seen any additional mutations or changes when using CRISPR in animal models, there still may be other unpredicted effects. The aforementioned PEPCK-C âsuper mouseâ with greater metabolism was also more aggressive, highlighting the fact that there are risks associated with using genome editing and it must be used with precaution.
 The greatest concern is whether germ line genome-editing technologies will not be confined to research and therapies and lead to reproductive applications. The reproductive use of germ line gene modification has been criticised for a number of biomedical and bioethical reasons, including the transgressions of the natural and divine laws, irreversible risks imposed on offspring and future generations, and the societal harms that eugenics and genetic enhancement represent. In addition to using CRISPR as somatic therapies to treat genetic disorders, an eventual possibility is to âcorrectâ the gene at the embryo stage in a germ line modification. While Dr Gyngell acknowledged that people have concerns about an unborn baby not providing consent (the non-interference principle), he believes that âparenting is all about interferenceâŚmaking sure your child grows up happy and healthyâ. We may see germ line editing in clinics in conjunction with preimplantation genetic diagnoses, which are currently commonplace to help identify genetic defects in embryos, however there remains great apprehension due to its potential for human enhancement and the âslippery slopeâ into eugenics.  Previously, there appeared to be a de facto global consensus that human germ line genetic modification should be prohibited for reproductive purposes, however, the ease at which DNA modifications can now be performed has increased the possibility that they will inevitably be practiced in a clinical setting. Moreover, prohibitive polices vary across regulatory systems, with some countries enforcing legal prohibition, others with prohibition by guidelines, some restrictive rather than prohibitive, and others remain ambiguous[vi][CN7] . Current research is directed towards developing treatments that utilise genomic editing, but before they can be brought into a clinical setting, both safety and efficacy must be demonstrated, and the extent to which we use this technology discussed in depth.
 As a population, we need to âavoid sweeping statementsâ, and rather than thinking of genome-editing tools as either good or bad, each application should be assessed individually. All three panellists agreed that these technologies require regulation and a universal licensing system to make informed decisions by evaluating benefits and risks, but their enthusiasm for the great potential for therapeutic, agricultural, and research applications was evident. Things are moving fast in genome editing, and in the midst of this excitement, we need to consider what are the best uses of the technology, and how we can ensure that it is safe and effective.
